Two coaches hired, one confirmed, one moving on
By Steve Corkran
Wednesday, February 1st, 2012 at 11:13 am in Oakland Raiders.
New Raiders coach Dennis Allen is moving closer toward filling out his coaching staff.
The latest moves moves include the addition of Al Miller as the strength and conditioning coach, John Greico as his assistant, offensive coordinator Greg Knapp being confirmed and tight ends coach Adam Henry going to Louisiana State.
This means that Brad Roll won’t be back as the strength and conditioning coach. The first order of business for the well-respected Miller and Grieco will be getting a handle on the rash of foot injuries that dogged running back Darren McFadden and wide receivers Jacoby Ford and Denarius Moore last season.
Allen continues his search for a defensive coordinator, with Greg Manusky moving to the forefront now that the New Orleans Saints denied the Raiders permission to speak with defensive line coach Bill Johnson.

Anybody know Reggie and/or Allen’s thoughts on Pryor? In my mind, the only way the Knapp hire makes sense is if it’s to help develop him.
For example:
What he did with Yates in Houston
espn.go.com/blog/afcsouth/post/_/id/33743/texans-qbs-will-miss-greg-knapp
How he handled Vick in ATL
savannahnow.com/stories/072904/2335038.shtml
All the pros (Cork included), however, seem to hold him an high regard. Maybe I just don’t know what I’m talking about and should quit being so worried…

I do know enough about Knapp to be extremely unhappy about the hire.
He’s behind the times in his thinking. His offenses aren’t productive…and that’s not a generalization.
His offenses during his tenures as Offensive Coordinator with the Falcons, Raiders and Seahawks (his last 3 gigs) he did not have a single year that he was in the top half of the league in scoring or total offense. That’s 8 years in a row as offense coordinator that his offenses were bottom half. He had the WORST passing offense TWICE (once with Raiders and once with Falcons with Vick).
This is now a passing league. It’s going that way now for the past few years and each year is going more and more that way. This year 8 out of 10 of the top 10 passing teams made the playoffs. Only 6 out of the top 10 rushing teams DIDN’T make the playoffs (teams stuck in the past).
Knapp = BAD hire. I was pissed about Manusky because I saw what happened in SD which declined when he took over last year majorly.
Let’s see beofore:
DEFENSIVE COORDINATOR SFO
2007 – #25 total defense
2008 – #13 Total defense
2009 – #15 Total Defense
2010 – #13 Total Defense
So, at least he’s averaging a bit above average (#16 would be exact middle of the pack, so barely above average).
The year before he came on it was the same range. The year after he left they shot up to #4 total defense.
It’s not a bad hire if they make it. I’d prefer someone that had a higher ceiling because we need better than a #13-15 defense on average if we’re going to try to get into the superbowl with a Knapp offense.

Maverick, you don’t know anything. You said all you know about Manusky is that SD’s defense regressed under him. You didn’t even know that Manusky was only in SD for one season. Really, how much of it can be his fault? You didn’t know that Manusky was SF’s D coordinator until Harbaugh showed up, and that Manusky was key in building their good defense. If you didn’t know these basic things, why should we listen to your opinion on anything, Knapp or otherwise? You obviously don’t know enough about NFL football for anyone to take your analysis seriously.

BUT, this isn’t a coordinator position where you need to know the current offensive and defensive schemes. This is a Strength and Conditioning position, where it’s all about…well…strength and conditioning. Making sure athletes have good physical strength, well-trained cardiovascular systems and good flexibility doesn’t change much in 7 years. Elway was about to hire this guy for Denver, but Miller and Allen really hit it off, so he came here instead.
Also, Miller’s #2 John Grieco is a 30-year-old former Strength coach at the University of Louisiana Monroe, so it’s a nice mix of the young at the old.

Sullivan44, I can see you love Manusky. That’s fine, I guess. He isn’t an all-world Defensive Coordinator. SD went from the #1 Defense in the NFL in 2010 to #16 when Manusky took over in 2011. But, he is middle-of-the-pack, and isn’t bad. Much better than Bresnehan that’s for sure.
But, I don’t get at all your love for Knapp. This guy is a bottom-feeder in all production departments you can ask for (at least in total offense and in scoring). If you wanna try to win a championship with a offense bottom half of the league you need to have a #1-#4 type defense which Manusky wouldn’t provide. But, I can see us improving a lot with him. Just not the type of hire if we’re going into some sort of a Knapp move-by-inches, barely score, conservative, offense.

I dont believe a team can deny HC considerations, unless they are already in that role.
++++++++++
That is true, but they can deny anyone under contract to interview for any position other than HC..which is what we are doing..
They just want to see if you will give up a draft pick. Trust me If we said we will give you a 7th rounder to interview -X- candidate they would allow it.

==========================
Sullivan, I express facts. Look at production and statistics. I DID know that he was only in SD for 1 year…and I DO know that the defense regressed under him.
I know he was the D-Coordinator in SFO and it did get better (not great) but was pretty good.
I know he was well thought of as a LB coach and that’s more where his high regard came from. But, this isn’t as bad of a hire (or woudln’t be) as Knapp. I’m not basing Knapp on his Raiders stint only. I’m basing it on overall production around him wherever he’s been offensive coordinator.

Allen > Jackson = again, unknown.
Knapp > Saunders = definitely NOT. Just look at production. Knapp has not had an offense finish in the top 15 in the league in scoring or total offense in his past 8 years as OC in 3 different teams. Somehow his players just suck when he’s the OC.
February 1st, 2012 at 11:57 am
I don’t see what Allen sees in Knapp, especially after being subjected to the Saints offense for all those years….Its not even in the same galaxy in terms of philosophy..

In McFadden’s case it is a mystery. If he had a compound fracture it would have healed faster. The most mysterious part of it is McFadden got hurt on the very lst play, went into the locker room, then came back, with his hat in his hand ready to play. Something doesn’t add up. The only thing I can think of is maybe McFadden wouldn’t play for Jackson. Seems like the only thing that makes sense.

No way that is true man. No way. Why wouldn’t McFadden love Hue. Hue built his offense around DMAC, and if not for that injury, would have made DMAC a probowler this year.
There is NO mystery around DMAC at all. He got hurt, the initially thought it was a mild sprain, and then it turned out to be a very major Lisfranc sprain. The team chose not to IR him, because we were poised for a playoff run, and could have used him then, and it probably helped sell tickets to think that this MIGHT be the game dmac comes back.

Kelly Skipper revived McFadden’s career. McFadden has given him a lot of credit for changing his running style, curing him of running too upright and having him focus on getting lower and behind his pads. The difference was VERY noticeable. Hue called a few plays that suited McFadden’s running style. You tell me.

Man to Man I bet you DMac would honestly tell you there was nothing more that he wanted than to be out there with his team. You guys get too caught up in what was reported to the media and assume the guy quit. The team did DMAC a disservice by downplaying the severity of his injury.

McFadden also trained differently the last two offseasons and changed his diet. So he’s responsible to a degree for his own production.

Nonfarm private employment rose 170,000 in January, marking the 24th consecutive month of gains, led by small businesses and the service-providing sector, according to ADP. In December, private employment rose 292,000, compared with a prior estimate of 325,000.

I’ll tell you this much about Billick, when the Ravens played the Broncos the week before that, Billick said before the game that the winner of that game wins the Super Bowl. He wasn’t too scared of Oakland or Miami, for some reason. Did he go by the Schotenheimer rule? Play the Raiders tough, they’ll fold? Because that’s what they did. Even before Siragusa flattened Gannon, we weren’t able to do anything. They had the swagger in that game from kick of to final whistle.

Duck, I was talking about us when I said smash mouth. Our 2000 team played tougher than our 2002 team. They never lost 4 straight, that’s for sure. 2002 was really all Gannon, Rice, Garner at the end of the day. In 2000 we won games in the trenches. I really think the 2000 team was our best team of the past 20 years. You can give the 2002 team back to the Indians, with Gruden bending them over in the Super Bowl.

I want to see the happy MB. You just need that connection. Or maybe you just need a woman to play with your worm. Whatever the case, all the best.

See what I mean? You actually bring up someone else dating? You are here from early morning to late night, every single day of the year. You are here on weekends, until late. You are here during week, until late. Have you ever had a date?

Bill Billick did well as an OC for the Vikings with D Green as HC, and the Ravens had a good defense but no offense, do they hired Billick to improve their offense.

Heeyyyyy!
A coaching move by Allen that I do agree with was the firing of crappy strength and conditioning coach Brad Roll
Hope Miller and Greico can get these boys bigger, stonger, more flexible and in peak football condition.

Coach Miller coached in the NFL for 20 years and was a member of the inaugural (2003) USA Strength and Conditioning Hall of Fame. Miller’s strength and conditioning programs have been the crucial building blocks of the foundation of four Super Bowl teams with the Denver Broncos, the AtlantaFalcons and the New York Giants. Miller develops and implements workout programs that are tailored to the individual needs of players. This attention to detail also helps limit injuries. Before his time with the NFL, Miller served as the strength coach at the University of Alabama under legendary coach Paul “Bear” Bryant.

“Tell this to the record millions of americans purple lips has put on food stamp”
First of all we need to consider the source here which is Brownstains so right away we know this information to be made up and false.
The President has not changed, added or adopted any laws that gave extra access to poor people for food stamps. The current wale fare and food stamp laws have been in place for many years.
You might want to actually think for a minute here we just came out of the worst recession since the great depression and that means more people were out of work in 2007 since the 1930’s banks and financial institutions that have stood for decades fell.
If we are or were in a recession then logic would tell you more people are out of work and collecting food stamps or unemployment.
DUH!
But to sit here and ignorantly proclaim our current president is somehow changing the food stamp laws is beyond stupid.
Wake up!

Post 179…I guess that would be the best hire so far then…
February 1st, 2012 at 12:47 pm
Hwnrdr,
If Gannon hadn’t have gotten hurt, he would have continued to go 3 and out, like he did all game. That Raider team was a score first team. They were always hot in the first quarter. They weren’t the kind of team that could lay down for 3 quarters then make a heroic comeback in the end. They were more inclined to build big leads and choke. I liked that team because they were such a running team, won games in the trenches. But let’s face it, Billick beat us that day by nothing more than using the Schotenheimer rule. He told his team it was the same old Raiders. Just go out there and punch them in the mouth, they’ll crumble.
February 1st, 2012 at 12:48 pm
And yes for once I do agree with Sandusky44. Brownstains does have an angry or pent up frustration that is evident in the way he writes.
Getting laid would cure that and we might see a kinder more considerate Brownstains but until some female cow offers up a sympathy f@ck for our beloved Brownstains we will continue to see him frothing at the mouth while posting here.

THE 2012 SEASON: A POST-MORTEM
It’s hard to beleive that it’s a day before Groundhog’s Day, yet, the Raiders 2012 season is all but lost. It is understandable that fans would be tempted to try and reconstruct what has transpired and wonder “what went wrong?” Yes, how could a season filled with so much promise be caput before it has even begun? To perform the inquiry, you have to wind the clock back to the early off-season.
That first week of January which was filled with so much promise. Finally, the Raiders would get a GM with real power, and a coach who could choose his own assistants. Back then, the sky was the limit. Super Bowl? heck, yeah! Reggie McKenzie seemed like the guy with the right pedigree, part the Ron Wolf management tree, a former Raider. But then, it all started to go horribly wrong. In his first presser Reggie used the word “irregardless”. This blog understandably blew up. How the heck can a man have an eye for football talent if he makes up words and dangles participles? Reggie could see he was out of his grammatical depth. In order to obfuscate his verbal shortcomings and realizing that they would prevent any proven coach from coming aboard, he reached and chose a coach who had no ties to the silver & black and probably thinks the Ghost to the Post is a blogging term for a guy who kicks the bucket while venting his spleen on this site.
Dennis Allen in his first presser failed the first test of a Raider head coach. Dennis Allen wore a black & white tie to the event, not a black & silver tie. Huejack never would have made such an obvious sartorial blunder. Heck, Big Al never would have let him on the stage.
Just when the season seemed like the season couldn’t get any more off course, Allen sealed the team’s fate by hiring Greg Knapp as its new offensive coordinator. Fans shrewdly realized that this must mean that the team would be completely re-built to suit ZBS and a west coast offense. What else could it mean? This offensive scheming stuff is complicated!! Ever tried to enrich uranium? Then, you know what I’m talking about. How could or would a guy like Knapp be able to run anything else? even if his team was drafted for a completely different scheme? But it was too late, there was not going back. Fans were left to look ahead to 2013 and hope for better days.
Many players when asked about these moves agreed that there wasn’t much hope. Some candidly questioned whether they should keep going through the motions and show up for this Spring’s OTAs. Why risk injury? Better to save it for 2013 when the lessons of 2012 could be addressed. To a man, they all agreed with the provferbial words of Al Davis; that the greatness of the Raiders is in its future.

Knapp’a offense has always been a top tier rushing offense, so that means the raiders are going to keep McFadden, Dennis has already said they are going to start Palmer; so barring another team offering us multiple high draft picks, I think it is safe to say Carson & Darren will be playing together in 2012. (plus this gives Pryor an OC that will develop him; between Saunders & Knapp, Terrel will have no excuses to not produce when he is given the opportunity to start).

I hope Pryor can play, and be ready in 2-3 years.
But I am not too confident in that. The fact he was a mid 3rd round pick, and bailed out by Al or who knows how far he would have slide, like 2 weeks after his workout for teams, doesn’t give me much hope.

By Vit (dude must thinking why arent people blogging on my blog)
The Raiders have hired Frank Pollack as their new offensive line coach, according to a source. The Texans assistant replaces Bob Wylie, who did a nice job last season with a patchwork line that only gave up only 25 sacks (tied for fourth in the NFL). Pollack spent the last five years as Houston’s assistant offensive line coach and while he has no ties to new coach Dennis Allen, Pollack did work with new Oakland offensive coordinator Greg Knapp last season.
FOXSports.com was the first to report the Pollack hiring.
The Raiders are not commenting on any hires, and it is not known whether or not assistant offensive line coach Steve Wisniewski will be returning in the same capacity.
Meanwhile, the Raiders were denied permission to interview Cowboys special teams coordinator Joe DeCamillis for an assistant head coaching position, according to ESPN. Allen worked with DeCamillis in Atlanta from 2002-to-2005. DeCamillas is married to the daughter of former Falcons coach Dan Reeves, who Allen mentioned Monday as being one of his mentors.
Oakland also hired Al Miller as the strength and conditioning coach and John Greico as his assistant, meaning that Brad Roll won’t be back after four seasons with the team.
Miller worked with the Broncos (1985-92), the Giants (1993-96) and Falcons (1997-05), and he interviewed with John Elway and the Broncos last week.

Maybe its too much of a stretch to go from HC to DC candidate.

New HC Dennis Allen hires a new O line Coach. The Raiders hired Frank Pollack as their new offensive line coach, according to a source. The Texans assistant replaces Bob Wylie.
Houston runs a ZBS. This seems confirms the new regime is gutting the team and we are in rebuild mode.

Frank Pollack (born November 5, 1967 in Camp Springs, Maryland) is a former professional American football player who played offensive tackle for seven seasons for the San Francisco 49ers – WIKI
another guy for ROG to hate!
February 1st, 2012 at 2:44 pm
Frank Pollack is in his fifth year as the Texans assistant offensive line coach. Pollack has worked closely with offensive line coach John Benton to mold the Texans offensive line into one of the most productive in the NFL.
Last season, the Texans front five paved the way for another record-setting season for Houston’s offense in 2010. The Texans ranked third in the NFL in 2010 with a franchise record 6,186 yards of offense (383.3 yards per game), a team-record 290 points (24.4 points per game) and helped produce the NFL’s rushing and touchdown champion, running back Arian Foster. Foster set team records with 1,616 yards rushing and 18 total touchdowns. It was the third-straight season Houston’s offense finished among the NFL’s top-five offenses.
In 2009, the line provided protection for the NFL’s leading passer, Matt Schaub, who threw for 4,770 yards and 29 touchdowns. Overall, the offense ranked fourth in the league, averaging 383.1 yards per game. The passing attack led the league with an average of 290.9 net yards per game, and the 25 sacks allowed were the fifth-fewest in the league.
In 2008, the Texans line featured the same starting lineup for all 16 games, marking the first such occurrence in team history. The line paved the way for rookie running back Steve Slaton to set a franchise record with 1,282 rushing yards, while the 32 sacks allowed were the second-fewest in team history. The 2008 offense was the most productive in Texans history, gaining 6,113 total yards, which ranked third in the NFL.
In his first year with the Texans, Pollack helped mold an offensive line that became the best in team history in terms of pass protection. The line cut its 2006 sack total nearly in half, from 43 to just 22 in 2007, allowing a sack on just four percent of the team’s pass attempts. On the ground, the line helped running back Ron Dayne to a team- and career-high 773 yards and six touchdowns.
Pollack’s first collegiate coaching position was at his alma mater, Northern Arizona, in 2005 as the co-offensive line coach working specifically with the tackles and tight ends. He was promoted to the offensive line coach in 2006 where the Lumberjacks produced the Big Sky Player of the Year and Newcomer of the Year. The Northern Arizona offense led the conference in scoring (34.4) and passing (267.2) and finished second in rushing (137.9). Their points per game were fourth in the Division 1-AA.
Pollack was a sixth-round selection by the San Francisco 49ers in 1990. He played by the Bay from 1990-91 before moving to Denver where he played from 1992-93 before ending his career with the 49ers from 1994-98. He finished his career with 90 career games and one Super Bowl Championship with San Francisco in 1994.
Pollack attended Greenway High School in Phoenix and graduated from Northern Arizona with a degree in advertising in 1990. He was inducted into Northern Arizona’s Hall of Fame in the fall of 2010. He and his wife, Wendy, have three sons, Frankie, Carter and Wilson.

So, what do you think Allen meant by wanting an “up-tempo” offense?

No team wants to part ways with quality assistants and the league doesn’t want to see these guys moving around very much. It would be too easy to buy an assistant just to get info on an opponent if they let it happen.

^^^^^^^^^
This just confirms the team will be implementing alot more ZBS run schemes….AGAIN and Knapp and Pollack will TRY to change the offense into Houstons style.
Trying to fix what wasn’t broken on offense without any explanation from Coach Allen?
Not a fan…but we gotta just hope for the best.
Only reason Skipper is staying is because he worked with Knapp when he was here the first time around.

It’s not about the best coaching candidates.

Does anyone know if we are going to keep that Mexican Waterboy who also hands off balls to our Qbs during warm ups ? I’m going to be mad if we don’t keep him! For heaven sake, He knows where we keep the water and all our players sure did look very hydrated last year.

I hope the Wylie rumors are false. If they are true outstanding job of fixing something that wasn’t broke. Here’s a thought, keep what works change what doesn’t. We’ve now replaced the Al Davis scholarship players for the Cheese Mackenzie’s scholarship coaches. If you can get a job by using the phrase “I know a guy” then you may not be the most qualified for that job. I really hope we keep Wylie and Wiz. We have 2 potential Pro Bowl players that don’t need their development stunted by Shanahan 2.0 The strength and conditioning coach hire was a good one. I hope we build on that.

********************************************************
I don’t get the “gutting the team” thing. Four of our starting o-linemen were here when we ran the ZBS. The only starter that wasn’t on the team is young Wiz. Barnes was a backup, but he was on the team. Barksdale may replace him next season, but he’s young and athletic. He may have even done some ZBS at LSU, I don’t know.
I’ve seen some hires that would indicate scheme change, but nothing to suggest that the team is going to be gutted. Allen said in the PC that he didn’t foresee major personnel changes. Said that there were some holes that need to be patched (and who can argue that?), but that doesn’t spell roster overhaul to me.
As they say, the only sure thing about change is that people will be terrified of it and fight it at every turn.

Saunders or Clements could have come in call plays as the OC ahead of Knappy time offense and Wylie and Wiz were doing just fine with the OLine!

Mark my words, the DAY Veldheer becomes a DA he will sign with whatever team Wylie is on.
February 1st, 2012 at 3:56 pm
None of these hires seem to have ANY of the key offensive players in mind that I was hoping for a strong playoff push next year. McFadden hated the ZBS, Palmer is not going to be happy in a “ball control” offense (especially if McFadden can’t run get loose because of the ZBS) the o-line seemed to be fine without the ZBS.
This seems more like McKenzie selfishly firing Hue for no reason, and then hiring a HC that may be a rising star… but doesn’t have enough contacts to attract top assistants. So now what is Allen doing? Desperately trying to fill out the coaching staff with his own cronies regardless of the players.
I was patient for ten frigging years, and now we seem to be starting all over again?? McKenzie should have just kept Hue and Saunders for continuity on offense and simply brought in a “SB quality” DC.
If it didn’t work he could blow the team up NEXT year with his own guys.
Allen would prolly still be waiting for a HCing position.

If they are going to change and blow up the offense then do it big. Allen was talking “explosive” and “up tempo” offense then he hires Kanpp.Lol, fail.
Tampa bay had the right idea trying to get Chip Kelly seeing that Oregon Ducks have one of the fastest up tempo offenses in football, college and NFL. Actually DMC gave credit to Hue for running plays that DMC told him he liked in Arkansas. Hue was then asked about what he did different, he said they ran more of a power scheme. You are wrong about them running a ZBS Cables last year, it was multiple and I would put money on it that Most of DMC’s yards came from running power.

Agreed.

McFadden will be put in a position to succeed.
Any coach worth His salt finds what his players do best, and creates the environment to allow it to happen.

We WILL be multiple on the o-line. Every team in the NFL has power and zone-based blocking scheme elements in its offense, just as every defense in the NFL has variations on its looks. Teams may emphasize one style over the other, but it’s all there and they all use a little bit of both.
Oh, and by the way; the “one cut and go” is ZBS all the way.

The big complaint from fans was the worry the Defensive staff being let go and the bringing in of the great Chuck B and the guys underneath him on defense.
Most Raider fans knew that was a terrible hire and we were proven to be correct!
Lets hope most of us are incorrect about the mediocre hiring of Knapp and Pollack as the new coaches in areas that did not need to be changed.

Can’t find the article but it will pop up some where.

This what you meant
McFadden told Jackson that he liked “just getting downhill” in a power running scheme, instead of the slower-developing zone scheme. He said he liked to “make one cut and go.”

Allen hires new offensive line coach
The Raiders have hired Frank Pollack as their new offensive line coach, according to a source. The Texans assistant replaces Bob Wylie, who did a nice job last season with a patchwork line that only gave up only 25 sacks (tied for fourth in the NFL). Pollack spent the last five years as Houston’s assistant offensive line coach and while he has no ties to new coach Dennis Allen, Pollack did work with new Oakland offensive coordinator Greg Knapp last season.

I’m sure Coach Allen sees DMAC as a better version of Arian Foster and Palmer as good as Shaub.
Then we getting mad because Wiz is out. Woodson is out. Hell, we led the league in penalties and couldn’t score and stop anyone when it mattered most.
We tend to judge these coaches like Wiz and Woodson based on their playing days and not their coaching which is questionable. If we gonna judge them like they are still playing we whould have had this:
GM: Matt Millen
HC: Art Shell
O-Line Coach: Jackie Slater
D-Line Coach: Keith Millard
DB Coach: Willie Brown
I mean really. WTF does Willie Brown do?

Not me. I would take that trade in a heartbeat. Start the healthy one and put the other one on the PUP List. When the starter gets hurt it should be about that time for the other to come off the PUP List.

“Not sure abnout that one… Gore is as oft injuired as DMAC…”
The difference is that Gore plays through injuries and takes the pain killer shot McFadden does not. Gore plays a lot more.

The Raiders have been a joke for so long that some of their fans can’t even understand what it takes to be a successful organization.

I know this will piss off the older Nation members, but as a 31 year old Raider fan, the only “legacy” I know of for the Raiders is finishing 3rd in the division and failing to make the playoffs.

“The arrival of Pollack, meanwhile, probably means a return to a zone-blocking scheme as Pollack has coached nothing but the philosophy in the NFL with Houston. Under Wylie, the Raiders were a power-blocking team.”
Mcfadden is not going to like this. He may be gone.

for the past few years we have all been saying (and everyone else around the league) that this team has the talent to go far.. if that is the case the problem is the coaching staff…i say give reggie a chance and good for him for doing what he wants to do and not what the owner is telling him to do..whats the worse that can happen?..we go 8-8 again?..like that was going to change with who we have coaching this “talented team” anyway..
