Wylie out, Pollack in
By Steve Corkran
Wednesday, February 1st, 2012 at 5:32 pm in Oakland Raiders.
Raiders head coach Dennis Allen dipped into the Houston Texans coaching staff a second time when he hired Frank Pollack to be the offensive line coach.
Fox Sports’ Alex Marvez first reported Pollack’s hiring. The Raiders have confirmed only the hiring of Greg Knapp to be the offensive coordinator.
Knapp also was with the Texans last season. Pollack replaces Bob Wylie, who spent only one season with the Raiders. It’s uncertain whether assistant offensive line coach Steve Wisniewski will be asked back for a second season.
The Raiders reinstated the “coaches” page on their website. However, Allen and Knapp are the only two coaches listed.
Pollack, 44, spent the past five seasons with the Texans as the assistant offensive line coach. He played for the 49ers in two stints that covered 90 games.
In other news, the Dallas Cowboys denied the Raiders permission to interview special teams coordinator Joe DeCamillis. League rules stipulate that teams can deny another team permission to interview a coach under contract unless the interview is for a head coaching vacancy.
The Denver Broncos denied the Raiders permission to interview linebackers coach Richard Smith. The New Orleans Saints denied the Raiders permission to interview defensive line coach Bill Johnson.

Disappointed. Thought only giving up 25 sacks deserved another year.
Does that mean no chance for Wiz?
February 1st, 2012 at 5:40 pm
“The arrival of Pollack, meanwhile, probably means a return to a zone-blocking scheme as Pollack has coached nothing but the philosophy in the NFL with Houston. Under Wylie, the Raiders were a power-blocking team.”
Mcfadden is not going to like this. He may be gone.

Basically now the Raiders 2 main offensive players do not fit the scheme. Carson does not fit Knapp’s WCO and Mcfadden does not fit in with the ZBS.
Hmmmmmm are they going to blow up the offense?

Seriously, dude. Give it up. Arkansas ain’t the NFL. Mcfadden himself credited Kelly Skipper with his improvement as a runner.

We are going to be terrible for a long, long, time because of what has transpired around here lately, when we could have just changed the Defensive Coordinator and won the division next year. Instead we have thrown a grenade into the trench and replaced the soldiers with absolute Mediocrity..

I think three things caused the emergence of McFadden:
-He started breaking tackles. First two years, it was rare he broke tackles, and since it is rare that the first guy brings him down.
-He had a credible QB that forced teams to at least honor the pass.
-Don’t overlook that his rise also coincided with us getting a top-flight LT.

Yeah. Shame on all those guys in the Bill Walsh coaching tree for only hiring their friends. Same goes with the Parcells tree. And so on.
Nothing good could possibly come of wanting to work with people you’re familiar with, have a good working relationship with and a shared vision of how things should be done.
Oh, the horror.
February 1st, 2012 at 6:07 pm
I’m not sure why some are making that statement that McFadden won’t do well in a zone blocking scheme. Have you been watching Foster the last couple of years and what do you think he ran behind in college. The spread is nothing but zone blocking. I don’t think it matters which method is used for a good running back as long as there is a hole to run through. Fans like MikieG I just don’t get at all. We had a misfit of coaches that Al put together that hasn’t worked in a decade. Stop thinking about last year we only beat one winning team. The organization needed much more than just a different DC. Are you kidding me? We set a record for penalties, gave up still too many sacks and couldn’t run the ball against good teams. McKenzie is trying to build a team that can maybe go 9-7 next year he is trying to build a team that can have sustained success. Someone who has never spent one day on a pro football team is trying to judge without a single down of football being played yet. So if you want to jump ship now, good riddance.
February 1st, 2012 at 6:08 pm
So we have:
1. An offensive system that plays against the strengths of the “starting QB” and all of our WR’s.
2. An offensive system that plays against the strengths of the “starting RB” and back up.
3. An OC known for being ultra conservative. (by week 8 we will miss the days of Lane Kiffin’s aggressive offense).
4. An offense that will consist of 2 running plays (Wide and Tight).
Hue was right, they are going to gut this team. They have to. This is the type of offense you have to commit to 100%. We need possession type WR’s that block and RB’s that are one cut and go type runners. And offensive line that has some speed to it. I don’t see any of the current Raiders outside of Wiz 2.0 (who will want to leave as soon as his contract is up.) Satele, Veldeer and Carlise (maybe Boss and Meyers) that can play this type of offense.
Trade bait:
DMAC – not a one cut type player
DHB – not a possession type WR
Bush – not a one cut type player
Ford – not a possession type WR
Moore – not a possession type WR
Palmer – not mobile enough to execute the bootlegs
Reece – need a blocking FB
T.Pryor – not accurate enough
Barksdale, Campbell, Heyer – not agile enough
with that being said whats the point of keeping any of the vets on Defense. This new offense is going to take some time to develop. Seymour, Kelly, Routt, Huff Curry, McClain and Branch are all bait. Lechler and Jano are bait too. We are not going to contend and they have value now. Time to invest in the future. We won’t even be able to think about contending for at least 3 or 4 years. How many legitimate free agents want to come to Oakland for a rebuilding project. And that’s if Polluck can teach the offense. The Texans had to beg Alex Gibbs to come and teach them the offense before they got it right. And the Texans from about 3 or 4 years ago is about a good comparison as you can make for the 2012 Oakland Raiders and that’s if we are lucky.
February 1st, 2012 at 6:10 pm
And we have been terrible for a long long time. Hopefully not that we are being ran like a modern franchise there is a chance for the Raiders to be relevant again.
February 1st, 2012 at 6:12 pm
So Andre Johnson is a possession receiver??? And anyone who watched DHB this year realized he played his best on short slants and possession routes. Did you see much of the Texans this year? Your guys are killing me with your analysis.
February 1st, 2012 at 6:13 pm
He is acting like a sh!tty politician in the way that he seems to be scratching the backs of those who have scratched his in the past..or helped him along the way..Almost like he is re-paying some debts to the people who brought him along and got him elected despite their own pathetic track records..
I really don’t like what his going on around here Gents..I really, really hate it actually. Hate Hue all you want, but we did attack on Offense as Much as we could, sometimes to our own detriment..The O line LOVED Wylie for his direct, easily understood teaching/coaching style..We are throwing the baby out with the bathwater, and I am f’ing pissed about it.
The Raiders will not win 6 games next year. Print it.
Im going to ween myself off the Raiders like I did with Booze and be done with them. I can’t take it anymore. I ENVY those who know nothing about what is going on with the NFL nowadays..I feel like a prisoner to the NFL and this team. I want to be set free.

Agree 100%… for a momento there I tought Dennis Allen was going to run a similar offense to N.O, but now, its down memory lane with old Knapp… very conservative…. teams will line up 8 in the box and makes us go 3 and out…
zone blocking? give me a break… it gets worse by the minute…
I mean, offense wasnt bad, the defense needed the big changes…
Dennins Allen has really put himself behind the 8ball… lousy evaluation ot coaching staff…
February 1st, 2012 at 6:15 pm
This offense will score more points than last year, through better red zone scoring and less drive killing penalties.
D-Moore will catch 75+ balls, DHB will have 7 TD’s, and CP will be a Pro Bowler.

Houston did not run a dink and dunk offense, and that is the mold our team will be after.
A ball-control, play-action, misdirection offense, that gets massive chunks of yards, and is one of the best in getting the TE involved, and working the different screens.
Awesome offseason so far!!

I have no problem if the Raiders want to implement the ZBS. When it works it is beautiful to watch. But you have to get the right personnel and the only person that has consistently coached it is retired. Allen CALL ALEX GIBBS NOW!! Offer him any and everything he wants.

True, but the system itself is not great in short yarded situations. Gotta have the beef to push the pile.

With Knapp running our offense, is Ford officially on the trade block?
**************************
I put him on the block weeks ago.
Ford and a 5th for an early 3rd.

Our new O-line coached, is fresh off his last game, a playoff road game to boot, pushing around one of the greatest rushing defenses in the history of the NFL.
Ravens never have given up that many rushing yards in a playoff game, and I think it had been 3 years since they gave up that many in a game.
—————————————————–
And they did it with a backup QB.
Imagine if that line had the threat of a QB to also keep them off balance!

Vegas…you really like what Allen is doing?
What do you think is next?

If you bring back Hue, you are getting the 1-4 misery that ended last season, not the 4-2, 7-4 unit we had for a moment.
Post Turkey day football is a different beast, and playoff football is a whole another animal.
Hue didn’t make it up the first tier, and was imploding in front of our eyes.

Steve Hoffman replaces John Fassel as special teams coordinator. Al Saunders interviews for Chiefs offensive coordinator gig.

Well, Saunders is gone. Good luck to him (except when he plays us).

Actually, WITH a 5th, we should get a 2nd.
A 6th and Ford for a 3rd.
His value as a returner has been rendered practically useless with teams kicking it out of the end zone half the time.

You guys crack me up, reading your nonsense. You truly believe in your heads you are right, and worse, that you actually know what you are talking about. This is not for everyone, but most of you, keep showing your ignorance through your stupid posts. Arm chair QBs…

73, I’m not saying you are right IR wrong, but what makes you qualified to say what is nonsense or what the posters are saying is ignorance?

Ray,
I do.
I don’t think we landed the next great mind or anything, but we are assembling a solid, NFL quality staff, that will be on one singular page.
No more fractured or lame-duck staffs!!!
February 1st, 2012 at 6:43 pm
Our basic STs has been terrible for a while.
I blame most of that on the lack of quality roster depth though.
As important as the STs coach hire is, it is more important to get solid LB and S depth!

With Ford fit an Moore and DHB & carson full camp etc man i think you would reconsider, Jacoby is electric, what would you want to pick up with a 3rd rounder?? just askin.
February 1st, 2012 at 6:45 pm
I love my raiders, I don’t like Knapp for o-coordinator though but I’m willing to wait and see how this stuff shakes out before I start crying like some clowns, go join another fan base
February 1st, 2012 at 6:46 pm
I liked Bones, and I think the long 65 yard punts sometimes out kicked our coverage.
But it always seemed like teams were one shoestring tackle that we made away from breaking things.
Not sure if that is talent or coaching, but we gave up 3 returns for TD’s last year, and it seemed like it just missed being 6.
February 1st, 2012 at 6:46 pm
Believe it or not all coaching staffs are some what Lame-Duck, If the side of the ball you coach on sucks your gone, it happens everywhere, yes even in pittsburg
February 1st, 2012 at 6:48 pm
It is really disheartening to realize that there are so many Raider fans that just don’t have a clue.
February 1st, 2012 at 6:57 pm
I mean really, there was one guy on here that was going to quit being a fan because Allen hired Knapp.
What kind of arrogance is that?
February 1st, 2012 at 6:57 pm
I disagree with the thought of trading Ford. The dudes too young and fast. He’s a scrapper that will fight for the ball.
February 1st, 2012 at 7:03 pm
Ford was a scrapper until Hue dissed his buddy Campbell and then he quit.

Exactly..some of these idiots that want to get rid of one of our most electric playmakers make me sick..They all drink each others Kool-Aid and any voice of dissent for the status quo is nervously attacked.

@78 mikieG
I don’t dissagree with you, hue should have gotten a second chance. Even after he blamed everyone after the final game, after the inability to stop penalties, inabilty to close out games, and the overpaying for palmer (my opinion) etc, etc… He should have gotten the opportunity to pick his own staff and do free agency, but that didn’t happen. We now have a real Gm who wanted his guy, who wants his guys. There isn’t anything we can do about it now, and fans are freaking out and criticizing every move. Allen could be a great head coach, Knapp could come back and be good, this is by far the best team he has had a chance to be an OC for. And chucky B was a terrible move, but one that was not hues fault, AL hired him. Hue got stuck with him. But what’s with all the panicking? Give these guys a chance, ill take a bad season if it means 2 years from now this group has fixed the problems and were contenders. But there’s no way of knowing until we wait and see.
