Griffith added to staff

By Jerry McDonald - NFL Writer
Thursday, February 2nd, 2012 at 2:50 pm in Oakland Raiders.

Former Raiders fullback Justin Griffith has been added to the coaching staff as a quality control coach, the club announced while confirming several staff hires.

Griffith played for the Atlanta Falcons while offensive coordinator Greg Knapp was there as well as Raiders head coach Dennis Allen.

Oakland also confirmed the return of running backs coach Kelly Skipper and assistant offensive line coach Steve Wisniewski as well as the addition of offensive line coach Frank Pollack, strength coach Al Miller and assistant strength coach John Grieco.

Eric Sanders, a quality control assistant for the last two years, will also return.

Among the positions the Raiders have not hired include defensive coordinator, quarterbacks, wide receivers, tight ends, defensive line, linebackers and secondary. The Raiders did not have a quarterbacks coach last season.

The club reportedly has sought permission to talk with Packers cornerbacks coach Joe Whitt Jr. about the defensive coordinator position, but it’s not yet known if Whitt is still under contract. If Whitt is under contract, it would be the Packers’ call as to whether to allow him the opportunity to interview for another job.

    ++++++++++++++++++++

If we hadn’t traded for Palmer I would be screaming for the Raiders to go after Manning, especially since it will not cost a team any picks since the Colts will be forced to cut him before he gets his $28 million dollar bonus.

Since the Raiders are out, I’d like to see him end up in SF or NYJ. He deserves to be on a team with a great defense for once.

  15. Dakota Says:

I found myself asking wtf does a quality control coach actually do, so I did some digging and found this:

“The Role of an NFL Quality Control Coach

The path to become an NFL head coach can be rigorous. An education along with a football background helps. Being able to teach and communicate is an asset as well. However, even if you were born into the middle of a coaching tree (see Kyle Shanahan), you still have to pay your dues to get there. You can take the road through the High school and college ranks in order to gain the background experience necessary, but in many instances you will need to do an internship as a Quality Control Coach.

Contemporary coaches are always searching for an edge over their opponents. Now that the Computer Age is upon us, the analyzing has become more technical. Many of those coaches have assistants called the “Quality Control Coach.” However, the QCC doesn’t really do much coaching at all. They spend all day multitasking, breaking down film up to five weeks in advance and analyzing data. They work all hours, in hotel lobbies, on airplanes and at their team’s headquarters producing reports for their Head Coach. They do get to do some coaching though. The QC coaches often run the “Scout” team in practices. From their extensive film work and breaking down plays, the QCC can be a great help preparing their team because they know the tendencies of their opponents. They make sure the Scout teams give the starters an accurate look at what they’ll face on Sunday in practice during game weeks.

Denver Broncos Head Coach John Fox knows just what to do more with the data from his QC Coaches. In addition to being able to call up any game on video, he can pull up any statistic to match that play. “What you do is chart the tendency of that (opposing) coach, so that you can tell your team that ‘in this situation it’ll always be a run or always be a pass,’” says Fox. “So your team knows what to expect.”

Quality-control coaches also learn N.F.L. systems from the long hours spent watching film. In no time they absorb the ins and outs of the chess match known as football and the ingenious distinctions between wins and losses. They also pickup how Pro teams organize their practices and their off-season, weight training and conditioning programs. Having access to the scouting, all the video, the personnel departments and the front office, the Quality Control Coach might be the best on the job training for anyone aspiring to become an NFL Head Coach.

    Todd Haley called it:

“The greatest job in football as far as learning.”

    Tony Sparano added:

“That job was the most valuable experience I had. That was my first piece of work in this league. Quality control rounded me, made me a better coach.”
The position as we know it in modern day football was created by Mike Holmgren in 1990 when he was the Offensive Coordinator for the San Francisco 49ers. Mike needed someone to transcribe the Niners Playbook and copy it to a computer. That someone was Jon Gruden. The job also included analyzing opponents, breaking down statistics, tracking and charting plays during games and fetching coffee. Gruden earned a salary of $500 a month, turned 18 hour days and often spent his nights on a cot in the office drawing up plays on his computer. Burning the midnight oil allowed him to pick up the necessary seasoning for his jobs as Head Coach with Oakland and Tampa Bay.

    Gruden:

“I was one of the first guys in the 49ers organization to put the game plan on a computer and store the information so that it was accessible next week, next year and later on down the road for future games. Over the years, all of my computer files became outdated because the software improved. We had to hire a couple of guys – we called them the ‘sweatshop’ – to go in there and really do nothing but re-draw all of the plays and re-type all of the information. That’s not a lot of fun, but when you’re doing that you learn the offense. You learn what ‘Zoom’ is and what ‘Slot’ is, and what the difference is. You learn the different protections and blocking schemes and calls that are made.”

The list of NFL coaches that have completed an “Apprenticeship” as the QC Coach include Todd Haley, Eric Mangini, Steve Spagnuolo, Brad Childress, Tony Sparano and Raheem Morris. Former Broncos head coach Mike Shanahan’s son Kyle did a QCC stint under Jon Gruden with Tampa Bay in 2004 and is now the Offensive Coordinator for the Houston Texans. Don’t be surprised if Kyle isn’t a Head Coach sometime in the near future. Other NFL sons that are currently employed as QC Coaches are Tony Sparano, Jr., Kevin Gilbride, Jr., Sam Mills III, Bobby April, Jr., Chad Grimm and Ryan Slowik. The Offensive Quality Control Coach for the Denver Broncos is Brian Callahan, son of former head coach Bill Callahan. On Defense, that distinction belongs to Jay Rodgers. Hopefully, the next step up for these QC coaches will be as a position coach.

Tim Berbenich spent his first two seasons (2006-07) as an offensive quality control coach with Tampa Bay. He is entering his fifth season with the Buccaneers in 2010 and second as assistant wide receivers coach.

“Our number one responsibility is to get the coaches prepared to start studying the game plans,” Berbenich said. “At the end of the day, I have to draw the plays, and if I don’t know them I can’t draw them. If you don’t know what they’re doing on defense you can’t break the film down. You can’t just know what one guy does, you have to know what all 11 players are doing. As far as drawing the plays and learning the playbook, I learned it all. I had no choice.”

That $500 a month salary is roughly $22,000 per year these days. The QC job has become so important that even Special-Teams coordinators are asking for their own Quality-Control coaches, and QC coaches now have agents.

If Quality is Job One as the Ford Motor Company claims, The Quality Control Coach is an essential element to any NFL team.”

A picture of the Oakland proposed site for the Raiders. The city owns 11 miles of land between the Airport & Fruitville it will sell or use as a bargaining chip to get developer into the Coliseum City project, as well as 4 miles in west Oakland right across the Bay from SF, both LA groups want 40% ownership & some control of the of the Team they bring to LA. I believe the Davis family owns 47% of the team but has 100% control of the Raiders as long as the maintain 45% ownership or more. Will the Davis family give up total control of the Raiders? As for Santa Clara there are still 5,000 resident trying to sue the city to stop the project, no one really know what will happen over the next year as far as building a new stadium goes. These are uncertain time.

The Raiders will be the Bay Area version of the Clippers, playing second fiddle to the 49ers in a stadium?

Any self-respecting Raiders’ fan would rather watch them go dominate L.A.
    -

I agree. The Raiders would be “borrowing” the stadium every other week. A stadium I’m sure will be clad in Red.

Read RaiderDucks post regarding the Jets / Giants shared Stadium.

Mark, imo, would not sign off on a RED and GOLD stadium deal.

    -

OK. Fair enough. So now we know its possible. So what is the benefit to the 9ers in allowing a shared stadium if they have already secured funding?

P.S – Dont think we have direct San Diego to Santa Clara flights.

Raiders should borrow the stadium for two years, while the newly remodeled stadium is rebuilt, right where it stands today.

If during those two years, the city of Oakland balks, than they are going to have to move on.

Carrol Davis owns 67% of the team at this moment. Once she dies, Mark will have to sell the majority share because of the Estate tax that will be handed down to him. He does not have the money. Of course, with the trends in this league, who knows what the true net worth of the team is right now, but I can tell you that Mark will have a pretty penny to pay. Betcha not too many people know about that….

As far as what the developers want, they are paid in contract sum. The revenue gets split annually amongst all stake holders. I do not do Amy Trasks’ job, so I don’t have exact figures.

Technically, Al Davis’ interest in the franchise will be passed to his wife, Carol, meaning that by law Mark can run the franchise without having to pay estate taxes. Upon his mother’s death, Mark would face a potentially hefty tax bill; however, an organizational source said that Al Davis anticipated this issue and put a plan in place that should allow the team to stay in the family under that circumstance.

Please show me where I ever said he should be our MLB. Starting OLB over Groves??? Absolutely. Didn’t understand why that switch was made last preseason. Scott played well at OLB to finish that season. Better than Groves BY FAR, anyway.

I’ll trade anyone on the roster for THE RIGHT PRICE.

Just trade DMac??? NEVER said that. I’d trade him for 2 #1s though. He has NOT been a HOG for us. I’d replace him with Lynch and draft the best available player to upgrade my front 7. You talk about a gamble? DMac’s foot isn’t a gamble???

NEVER said trade ShoNasty until we started talking about Hue replacing the DC. He already tried last offseason to go with a 3-4 HC. We hired a GB GM and there were big rumors about Moss or Capers coming over. ShoNasty does NOT fit in a 3-4. NO I do NOT want to see him try and play OLB.

Ford is the 3rd best WR on the team, imo. We have PLENTY of receiving options. IF we can use Ford to get a starter at another position, I’m pulling the trigger.

Chopping up scenarios is what we do here, bruh. You like things the way they are. You trust the GM to fill in the gaps with UDFAs and low round draft picks instead of MAYBE cashing in a chip that another team is willing to overpay for. No, The federal estate tax law includes an unlimited marital exemption. This means that Davis could have passed as much as he wanted onto his wife — both before he passed away through gifting, and after through his estate plan — and none of it would be subject to the 35% estate tax.

In 1972, while managing general partner Valley was attending the 1972 Summer Olympics in Munich, Davis drafted a revised partnership agreement that made him the new managing general partner, with near-absolute control over team operations. McGah signed the agreement. Since two of the team’s three general partners had voted in favor of the agreement, it was binding under partnership law of the time. Valley sued to overturn the agreement once he returned to the country, but was unsuccessful. Valley sold his interest in 1976, and from that point onward none of the other partners had any role in the team’s operations. This was despite the fact that Davis did not acquire a majority interest in the Raiders until 2005, when he bought the shares held by McGah’s family. At his death he owned approximately 67 percent of the team.

In 2007, Davis sold a minority stake in the Raiders for $150 million and said that he would not retire until he wins two more Super Bowls or dies.

The 200 million to the Raiders is speculation on my part.

It’s in reference to the 200 million loan that was approved for the 49ers today. The only way the NFL cuts that check is if the Raiders and 49ers come to an agreement on a shared stadium in Santa Clara.

The estimated cost of that build is 1.1 BILLION.

    ===========================================

The Rams could very well move. One of Jeff Fisher’s sticking points (and the reason he almost went to Miami instead) was the possibility of a move back to LA.

The Chargers can move any year they want now, as their lease contains an escape clause. They’ve said they won’t move THIS year, but nothing beyond that is guaranteed.

The Jaguars can only break their lease if they can show three straight years of operating losses, and even then it has to be approved by a FL judge. Tough, but not impossible.

The Vikings may be staying in MN, and a new stadium may be built on the current Metrodome site.

If the NFL really wants two teams back in LA, the Rams look like one, but the other could be us. I almost wonder if the league isn’t trying to subtly goose the Raiders back to LA with today’s announcement.

Remember that in LA, we wouldn’t be sharing a stadium. One team would get Farmer’s Field in downtown, and the other would get Ed Roski’s stadium out in the City of Industry.

The only ones who would lose out would be the 49ers because they could have it all to themselves making them share it with us instead of us being a tenant would increase the value of our team.

Why should the 9ers have the South Bay?

The NFL would contribute twice as much money if we shared the stadium like the Giants and Jets do.

I am not for us being the 49ers tenants while we consider where to be permanently.

The biggest reason I want to share the Santa Clara stadium is that I live here I would be less than 5 miles from the stadium.

Death tax during the year George Steinbrenner died was 0. This year the death tax is still very limited. The son may get some tax breaks as well. Grandchildren do also, if gifted. The death tax is being overhauled by Congress. My dad’s estate was large; he paid 0. When mom goes, us kiddies will still pay 0.

So many of the wealthy, instead of using their wealth and influence to help their local economies, are instead acting like the typical suburban family and running for it at the first sight of plight or despair. Just imagine if the wealthiest Americans decided to tuck tail and run during the Great Depression. Every one of us would have grown up in a war torn ghetto. Instead most of us grew up in a middle class culture, and watched our parents go to work at decent paying jobs, thanks to a government and a business culture that understood their role as civic leaders as well as they did their own personal ambitions and economic success. Make no mistake, today’s wealthy are every bit as timid as the poor, whom they openly loath.

I’m warming up on Greg Knapp.

Here’s something from a Texans site about Knapp’s job coaching their QB’s last season, specially like what Jeff Garcia had to say about his work and preparation.

    - Four years ago, Greg Knapp was Oakland’s offensive coordinator. Back then, the Raiders were flip-flopping JaMarcus Russell and Josh McCown at quarterback, and Knapp said that was the most unusual circumstance he’d encountered on the sideline.

    And then came this season.

“I’ve never lost two guys on injured reserve before,” Knapp said.

Knapp, the Texans’ quarterbacks coach, was referring to season-ending injuries to Matt Schaub (foot) and Matt Leinart (collarbone). While his responsibilities never changed — “My job is to get the backups ready,” he said — Knapp also admitted that the last month has been challenging.

He has gone from the known — Schaub didn’t miss a snap last season, while Leinart had been around for a year and rookie T.J. Yates wasn’t being force-fed anything — to the unknown, a reality in which Yates is entrenched as the starter while a couple of guys fresh off the couch, veterans Jake Delhomme and Jeff Garcia, are his backups.

Knapp has had five quarterbacks under his supervision this season: Leinart, Yates, Kellen Clemens (who was cut to make room for Garcia this week), Delhomme and Garcia.

Sunday will be the second professional start for Yates, who was victorious last week against the Atlanta Falcons despite air-mailing a few balls early.

“The first couple balls I wasn’t really following through and kind of just going through my mechanics as a thrower,” Yates said.

“Knapper got in my ear a little bit, told me just to calm down and just go out there like I’m going through practice and follow through and everything.”

    History with Garcia.

Unlike with Schaub, Knapp is more involved with Yates. There is a meeting on Tuesday morning to watch the upcoming opponent, even though it’s supposed to be the rookie’s day off. There is extra time after Thursday’s practice, gauging his thoughts on what should be included in the first 15 plays.

That sort of preparation is what attracted Garcia to the Texans.

    “(Knapp) hasn’t changed,” Garcia said.

“The offense may have changed in ways, but he is such a detail-oriented guy, and that’s one thing I always remembered, respected and appreciated about him in San Francisco — he prepared like no other. He was always on top of everything.”

The two were together with the 49ers from 1999-2003.

    Pushed to extreme.

When Gary Kubiak said a couple of weeks ago that Knapp wasn’t getting much sleep, the head coach was only sort of kidding. But the Saturday night before Yates’ first start, Knapp said he fell into a deep, peaceful slumber.

“Seeing his progress occur, even when running the scout team, I was very comfortable,” he said.

    The feeling is mutual.

“From the second I got here, he’s pushed me mentally to the extreme, especially during training camp,” Yates said.

“Every day through the first 10 weeks of the season when I was going to be inactive … he was quizzing me just as much, if not more, than the guys that are out there getting those reps.”

Garcia summarizes what Yates is saying.

“Whatever it is with the quarterback position, (Knapp) wants you to do it to perfection,” he said.

  211. 504 Raider Says:

So Knapp should be able to make Pryor a stud. We shall see.

Garcia summarizes what Yates is saying.

“Whatever it is with the quarterback position, (Knapp) wants you to do it to perfection,” he said.

So why didn’t we keep Saunders as the OC and just make Knapp the QB coach then?smh

    ———————————————-

Well, Knapp would not have made a lateral move to come coach the QB’s here, in Houston he had his guy Schaub, they go all the way back to Atlanta and Yates looks to be his new project.

Not to mention the fact that Knapp and Saunders run different systems.

Any self-respecting Raiders’ fan would rather watch them go dominate L.A.

No thanks. Shootings, stabbings , beatings into a coma – not down with that. Steeler fan got hit in the head and killed in L.A. – They will share the stadium and will do so on a co-lease. Both teams have a rich legacy and a move would force them to shut the f$%k up and play and dominate.

    ==================
He had the spygate thing with Belichick, and i’m sure Bill pretty much got the word out he’s not to be trusted. There was an incident with the Browns, where he pulled down a very popular mural with Jim Brown and the old time Browns stars, and he was criticized and it turned off a lot of the organization. He was secretive, petty, and played games…

Remember when McKenzie said; I asked around, and heard nothing but good things about Dennis Allen. It was likely the opposite with Eric Mangini – you see he hasnt got a sniff, and he’s a good X’s and O’s type coordinator..he just couldnt quite relate to players.

    +++++++++++++++

Seems like Knapp gets it in Two’s

    Raiders;
    BRL + mcclown = 2 garbage QB’s

    texans
    schaub + lienart = 2 inuried QB’s

    Raiders
    Palmer + Pryor = 2 Good QB’s

  224. Marley Bob Says:

Going back to Knapp’s tenure here.

He didn’t call plays, Kiffin did in 2007 and for the first 4 games of 2008, then Knapp took over after Kiffin was fired but that lasted only 4 games and then Tom Cable took over.

So Knapp got 4 games as play-caller with JaMarcus as your starting QB, Justin Fargas as your leading RB and Javon Walker, Ashley Lelie and a washed up Ronald Curry getting most of the snaps at WR … not to mention the Kwame Harris-Mario Henderson LT combo and Cornell Green at RT.

Knapp’s got a lot more to work with now and the guy must be bright since he keeps getting jobs and coaching up QB’s, maybe his time has come.

  225. Thec Says:

“Whatever it is with the quarterback position, (Knapp) wants you to do it to perfection,” he said.

    +++++++++

This will bode well for Pryor…

  226. Silverandblack666 Says:

    “Triple6,

do you actually believe that McF can/will play a full season even in a contract year?

Vegas gave an over/under of 9 games a while back including playoffs.”

NO I do not think he will play a full season I do think he will try to.

  227. Thec Says:

and then Tom Cable took over.

    ++++++++

Thats when cable should have been canned…

  228. Raider J Says:

Good moves so far that may pay off for DMc:

Keeping RB & OL coaches of a very good/potentially great Raider running game, bringing in OL coach of a league leading rusher,

…AND MOST IMPORTANTLY, bringing in Hall of Fame strength and conditioning coaches to prepare these consistently injured players for 16+ games.

  229. 303Raider Says:

    Knapp doesn’t suck you morons.

Look at the player she coached? What a joke.

He did a really good job with Houston, no matter what anyone says, he deserves some of the credit for a team that dealt with as many injuries to key players as anyone inthe NFL.

D.A is smart, he is going after guys from teams that were a part of a winning team. knapp learned from Kubiak and The Texans Offense which was pretty damn good late year, even with a 3rd string QB.

Why was Al Saunders so good again and wasn’t he part of an offense that went 1-4 during the stretch?

  232. SR Raider Says:

Throw deep! Palmer has the arm, Moore and Ford have the speed

Spread the defense wide with speed, then gash up the middle with McFadden

Knapp will do much better this time around. Particularly if coach Allen has a plan, which I suspect he does

    But you gotta throw deep!

  233. Marley Bob Says:

More Greg Knapp, an interview when he was hired by Jim Mora in Seattle for the 2009 season.

“Greg Knapp’s hiring as the Seahawks’ offensive coordinator raised questions about whether Seattle would become predominantly a running team.

Knapp’s offenses in Atlanta and Oakland favored the run by a wide margin.

Former Seahawks coach Mike Holmgren always thought a team needed to pass the ball effectively to win playoff games.

Knapp echoed that thought during an interview with KJR radio’s Dave Mahler.

Knapp: “I am a big believer in balance. You can’t be dominant in one or the other and expect to win in the playoffs. You can probably get to the playoffs being like that, but if you want to win the playoffs, you have to have balance and you have to do both well.”

Knapp also pointed to his time as the 49ers’ offensive coordinator from 2001 to 2003 as evidence he can favor the passing game when the personnel dictates.

The 49ers ran the ball 51.3 percent of the time on first down during those years.

As the chart shows, the percentages rose to 56 percent with the Falcons from 2004 to 2007 and 54.1 percent with the Raiders over the past two seasons.

Knapp: “If I was to be interviewed after my San Francisco days, they probably would have emphasized, ‘Why do you throw the ball so much?’ With Jeff Garcia and my times with Steve Young, we had a lot of success throwing the ball.

The makeup of the personnel there said, ‘Let’s do that.’ My last two stints it has not been that way because for one, we had a running quarterback in Atlanta and two, in Oakland, we had a very young quarterback in JaMarcus Russell. The running game is your best friend for a young quarterback.”

    * Knapp indicated he will probably work Seneca Wallace into the offense, possibly with Hasselbeck also on the field.

Wallace’s mobility could pair nicely with some of the zone blocking schemes in the running game, Knapp indicated (with the zone run going one way and the keeper or keeper fake going the other way).

    * Knapp also said he was eager to have an experienced, traditional passing quarterback as his starter.

Knapp: “A lot of it is dictated by the personnel. Here we have a very experienced, Pro Bowl, played-in-a-Super Bowl quarterback in Matt Hasselbeck and I am
kind of licking my chops because I am back with a guy who has a lot of savvy, a lot of experience, has made tough decisions in close ballgames and has done well. It helps my cause as far as what to choose from when you are using the playbook.”

    —————————————————

    * Replace Seneca Wallace with Terrelle Pryor and Matt Hasselbeck with Carson Palmer … definitely an upgrade for Knapp to work with.

OK, this is the part I hope he is right about. He also said Knapp is smart enough to know he has to play to the strength of his players. INDIANAPOLIS — The NFL has approved a decision to loan $200 million to the San Francisco 49ers to help finance a new stadium in Santa Clara, Calif., where the team’s headquarters are located.

Team president and CEO Jed York said the construction timeline — which was part of the proposal to the NFL — projects that the stadium will be built by 2015, but added that the stadium could be done by 2014.

I asked York if there are any plans to share the stadium with the Oakland Raiders. He said the stadium has been approved to house two teams but the 49ers are the only team going in for now.

York also said the 49ers will get in on bidding for a Super Bowl.

He called the development “a big step forward” on his Twitter feed.

“With the NFL’s muscle now behind the new stadium, we are moving forward,” York said in a release issued by the team. “I expect an official ground-breaking ceremony very soon. Get your hard hats ready; we are embarking on the path to the next generation of 49ers football.”

According to the release, the 49ers are the first team to draw from the so-called “new stadium fund” that came out of the league’s new collective bargaining agreement.

York also said the 49ers will get in on bidding for a Super Bowl.

The team and Santa Clara announced in December that they’d received an $850 million loan to cover most of the estimated $1 billion cost.

The rest of the cost will be covered by the league’s loan, a hotel tax and Santa Clara’s redevelopment funds.

The 49ers play in Candlestick Park. The stadium made headlines when the lights went out twice during the 49ers game against the Steelers on Dec. 19.

da dumb azz thinking is the sh!it youre saying. yes u did mention sh!t about scott playing mlb a couple years ago. i never said anything about shawny playing olb in a 34. the way u undervalue ford is ignorant. we lacked explosiveness in the passing game without him and his return ability can NEVER be overlooked. your NEW gm and coach just said that the roster is talented enuff. you can have fun with trade scenarios all u want but ill take the young budding talent over those picks. ‘Jack Sparrow’ pepper-sprayed in Hollywood action figure brawl
    February 2, 2012 | 7:39 pm 215
A brawl between several people dressed as action figures erupted in front of the Kodak Theatre in Hollywood on Thursday evening, resulting in a Jack Sparrow character being pepper-sprayed by an attacker, police said.

Jack Sparrow was treated for minor injuries in the fracas that included Catwoman, an alien and a second pirate, the Los Angeles Police Department said.

Officers were searching streets in Hollywood after Catwoman, the alien and pirate fled following the free-for-all that played out in front of tourists on busy Hollywood Boulevard, Officer Norma Eisenman said.

The incident was the latest run-in between characters who pose for pictures with tourists and then aggressively demand money, according to police.

In September, a man dressed as SpongeBob SquarePants was detained by police outside Grauman’s Chinese Theatre in Hollywood after an altercation with two women. In another incident, Spider-Man was led away in handcuffs.

Police officials acknowledge that maintaining peace in the area has been challenging. At one point, LAPD officials held a summit with characters to improve relations in the popular destination and even resorted to a temporary ban after problems persisted.

City rules allow people to tip characters, but prohibit them from demanding payment.

It’s not just here that I am condemning Knapp. Somehow his personnel just “suck” when he’s there…good coaches make something of the personnel they have. We could have just sat here and said “well, our starting QB, RB and top 2 WRs are injured here. That’s why we have a #26 offense”. But the coaches didn’t, worked out how to make use of everybody and kept the offense going through the whole thing…and all this despite having no defense.

Knapp somehow at best manages to have a #16 offense, and more average has a #25 – #30 offense (bottom of the league). He had #32 twice. TWICE he had the WORST offense in the league that he was guiding.

He can make “reasons” why his offenses were bad because “bad players” or “injuries” but that just shows that he isn’t that good and doesn’t adapt and doesn’t work out ways to use the players he does have.

I think Knapp did a hell of a job in his 1st stint with us. By the time he left, JaMarcus was thriving and we were winning games. Losing him to the Seahawks was definitely a setback that forced Al to go out and get Hue.

    @@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@

Hmmmm….What an awesome supporting cast for our young QB. Surpised we didn’t go undefeated. Funny thing is, this is an All Pro group compared to the one we had in 2009, especially when you consider the shtty coaching staff. Poor JaMarcus!!!
    ============================================

You’re right. Most overall number ones are saddled with bad players around them and bad staffs. It is up to them to suck it up and make everyone around them better. Carson Palmer was 8-8 his lst year as a starter, then 11-5. Jamarcus Russell folded faster than superman on laundy day.

  278. Hardline Says:

AL Davis was the ring leader of this crew: his genius was giving his players their lead, turning them loose, and in the end receiving the booty and spoils they won.

That was a time of genius, rebellion, and insurrection.

But then the world changed. The merger took place, the NFL was formed and teams became business-like. AL neglected his team and made more money suing the NFL, Pete Rossell, and the city of Oakland than he did winning football games. Meanwhile, the sport evolved economically, and AL was left behind; his style of management just didn’t work as football became a 12 month per year industry. The more he tried the more it eluded AL, until finally he sank into the oblivion of old age and dementia, and then became a laughing-stock.

The players (and staff) the Raiders now have, just don’t figure: the Raiders at their greatest were blue collar, working class players. There would have been no DMAC sitting out 9 games with a sprained foot or an aching toe. Teams would have never run right through the old Raiders. Most every game QB’s would fall and be out for the count. Causing concussions was a good thing back then. You would never see a JC, bottom lip hanging down to his knees, the Raiders settling for a “game manager”. It was attack, attack, attack.

Before the Raiders can transistion to dynasty they have to know who and what they are, players and staff. That may be no longer possible.

  279. raiderzmaverick Says:

Here’s an article which pretty much exemplifies Knapp:

“Darren McFadden never flourished under former coach’s zone-blocking scheme, only emerging once Hue Jackson molded the offense to his strengths. ESPN’s John Clayton suggests the Raiders will have to decide whether to re-sign free agent Michael Bush or trade McFadden this offseason. Knapp has been a decidedly run-heavy play-caller, though it’s odd that the Raiders are now installing an offense that won’t cater to the skills of its most dynamic players.”

And how about Willie Anderson at tackle, along with Rudi Johnson running the ball? As for CPs 8-8 record, John Kitna did the same thing the previous season as Carson watched from the bench. No, exactly, it’s NOT a rushing league any more. More than half of the top 10 rushing teams did NOT make the playoffs.

But that’s ALL Knapp has EVER been good at. Look at his past 8 years as Offensive Coordinator. Never had a passer in the top 15 in the league. Never had a TOTAL offense in the top 15 in the league. Never been top 15 in the league in points scored. Most of the time near dead last in passing yards.

He does a run first, run 2nd offense that is not high powered and does not score a lot of points. AND that offense which is based on the run does not fit our top RB’s strengths. So that makes it doubly bad.

    @@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@

Now would be a good time to have a young QB on the roster to groom because this guy obviously gets it. Losing him was a huge blow to our offense in 2009. I’d love to hear his thoughts on his time working with JR. I’d be willing to bet a hell of a lot of money that he’d describe him as hardworking, bright and coachable.

    =========================
Even if, he did open up the passing game half-way or full-tilt, he needs a runner that can catch passes and adapt, like Shady McCoy of the Eagles. If you look at his running style – its skip, bounce and accelerate. McCoy is similar to Charlie Garner, who did a similar style with Knapp during the Garcia days over in SF. – McFadden is cut, then burst, very little side to side motion.

Then, making it worse, the WC offense is predicated on precise pass patterns and routes, and Knapp doesn’t even call a balanced ratio – he’s run-heavy…which negates our speed and explosiveness on the perimeter with Ford and Moore.

Hopefully Knapp takes a page out Kubiak’s playbook and gets Reece more involved, Casey is a good player but he has nothing on Marcel when it comes to skills.

    ********************************************************

Agreed. I also think that our young wideouts will thrive under Greg Knapp, especially DHB. His speed and physicality will be a huge asset on the quick hitters; LBs can’t stay with him and safeties and cornerbacks aren’t big and/or strong enough. I alwys thought he’d be better used in the slot anyway, for those reasons.

  310. Marley Bob Says:

Speaking of Marcel Reece and Justin Griffith.

Take a look at what the FB role is in the ZBS and Knapp’s system in particular:

“Justin Griffith is unselfish like a throwback fullback, blocks like a throwback fullback and relishes doing the dirty work like a throwback fullback.

So it’s only right to deduce that he’s, um, I don’t know, a throwback fullback.

    Wrong.

“No, no, no!” Griffith exclaims, slapping at the label.

He makes it sound like someone nicknamed him Charmin.

“I’m not a throwback guy at all,” Griffith says.

“I’ve been fortunate and blessed to be a part of this offense most of my career. It doesn’t beat you up. There aren’t a lot of isolations, power blocking and all that kind of stuff. We’re a zone-scheming team. And I get to catch the ball, too.”

Delve into Griffith’s past, and you start to understand why he doesn’t want to be associated with the griminess of the position.

He’s a converted tailback. Back in Magee, Miss. (pop: 4,332), he was celebrated for rushing for more than 4,700 yards — and 66 touchdowns! — during his junior and senior years of high school.

He switched to fullback while in college at Mississippi State. He’s not a natural mauler, and he’s quite effusive in explaining why.

Then he goes onto the football field, and mauls people.

Don’t think he’s having an identity crisis, however. Griffith refuses to be pigeonholed, but he knows who he is and understands his role perhaps better than anyone in this variation of the West Coast offense.

Why? Because this is Griffith’s sixth season working with new offensive coordinator Greg Knapp.

His experience and knowledge of the system will prove invaluable for the adjusting Seahawks. In fact, he may be the key to revitalizing the running game.

    * In Knapp’s offense, the fullback must think like a tailback just to block the right defensive player.

Instead of being assigned a specific player to block, the fullback must read the defense and react on the fly.

It’s not an easy task. Maybe that’s why it takes a reluctant throwback fullback to master it.

“It’s really important with our outside zone run game, where he is the lead guy,” Knapp said of the fullback.

“We teach our fullbacks to read it like the halfback. There are certain indicators based on the run call that’s being made. He has to see it the same way we want the halfback to see it, so he’ll lead that halfback to the right hole. He is kind of that floating guy, where if the defense overflows, he can cut back and clean up the backside.

“If they try to stunt inside, he makes that read and bounces it out and the running back follows him. So there’s a lot of burden on him in identifying what’s the correct path in the run game.”

Knapp has had a top-10 rushing attack in all eight of his seasons as a coordinator. Griffith has been around for five of those.”

We’ll see if Marcel Reece can adapt, at least he has a great teacher now and with his skill-set, it should not be hard to find ways for him to contribute more.

So basically, the last 14 years, we have been mostly a ZBS team, with our playoff runs and at least 8-8 years under the ZBS and hybrid, and some 5-11, 2-14 seasons with the power scheme.

Yet people want to kick and scream about hiring a ZBS guy???

    Ohhh….the logic!!!!

Probably going to catch some sh*t for saying this, but I have a lot of respect for the Patriots. They take care of business, don’t showboat, and perform as well AS A TEAM as anyone in the league.

For what it’s worth, they didn’t make the call in the Tuck Rule game. They just happened to be the beneficiaries of one of the worst officiating blunders in the history of the league (I have a picture of Brady with BOTH hands on the ball right before he got hit by Woodson, so I don’t buy what the NFL is still selling on that one).

As far as taping opponents’ walkthroughs and so forth; as Raider fans we would be completely hypocritical to have a problem with that. That has the classic Raider approach written all over it, and the old timers know what I’m talking about.

Plus, Belichik is about as anti-establishment as it gets. I wish Al would have listened to Amy, although it’s debatable whether he would have had success here or not.

Hard to hate them when they are so much like the Raiders of old.

The WCO calls for quick accurate throws and timing is paramount. leadership and trust are mandatory. We have the fastest group of WR’s in the league. Get the ball to your playmakers and let them make plays. Throwing it up for grabs and hoping for the best hasn’t really worked out for us.

Justin Griffith is here to help Kelly Skipper make Reece & Tonga stud ZBS FB’s
    **********
Griffith may have some interaction on the field with Skipper and the backs, but probably not too much.

“A quality control assistant’s job is rooted in game preparation. They usually work at least one or two weeks ahead in the regular season.

They prepare the statistical analysis as well as the initial video study of upcoming opponents. The defensive quality control assistant breaks down opposing offenses, including how often they line up in specific formations and how they use various personnel groupings.

He charts down-and-distance situations, field position, substitutions, etc., and then gives that report to the team’s defensive staff when they begin their game planning each week during the regular season.

The offensive quality control assistant would do the same in regard to opposing defenses and then give the reports to the offensive staff.

Because of that they must work ahead of the coaching staff. If the Broncos face say, the Chiefs, in Week 3, the quality control guys have to have their reports done before the rest of the staff begins the game planning for that game.

When the team is getting ready to face the Chiefs, the quality control guys are already scouting the next opponent.

It’s a difficult job that requires a grind-it-out work ethic with a detail-oriented approach because the charts have to be correct.

Most coaches start on the vocational path with the job. The guys who don’t do it well don’t make it long enough to get promoted most of the time.

Often it’s also an ex-player’s first taste of coaching after he expresses interest in trying to be a coach, a job that weeds out those who aren’t interested enough to keep at it.”

    ========================

1 – and DMC’s reliability are a huge obstacle…its all but obvious, when they are starved for picks, and 16-18 people are unsigned – its an opportunity to fill in the team with “his guys” lot of FA’s and affordable ones that fit what Allen is attempting to do, and there needs to be a house cleaning, anyway. – the nucleus is overpaid, and they need a new bunch of over-achievers that ball, and additional picks that can contribute right away. I wouldn’t be surprised if DMC, Murphy, Michael Mitchell, maybe even Bruce Campbell would be served up.

I don’t want to pitch him out the backdoor because of his injury history and watch him become the best RB in the league for the next 5 or 6 years. Al Miller just put 5 gallons of milk in DMAC’s fridge. Let’s see what happens

    Sam,

As many Jackson, Saunders & Wylie fans point out … offense wasn’t the problem last year.

Here are DMAC’s base salaries (per roto)

    2012: $5.65 million
    2013: $5.85 million
    2014: Free Agent

Here were the Top 10 highest paid RB’s of 2011

    1. Jamaal Charles
    2. Adrian Peterson
    3. Steven Jackson
    4. Darren McFadden
    5. Maurice Jones-Drew
    6. Michael Turner
    7. Frank Gore
    8. Brandon Jacobs
    9. Chris Johnson
    10. Cedric Benson

does Mike Bush expect to join that company in 2012?

We have no idea what his contract demands are!

  420. Just Fire Baby Says:

I would prefer to keep both Bush and Darren.

But gun to my head, I would trade Darren and keep Bush, and focus on drafting another RB in a year or two.

I can’t see letting Bush walk, and than rolling with Darren and Taiwan, and risk having Reece and Cartright toke the rock down the stretch of a playoff run.

  424. weaselbit Says:

    Bush is more reliable.
One of the reasons his impact diminished with time was Hue’s predictable play calling which had defenses stacking up against him. Dude takes off when there’s a hole. O-line can only do so much when defense knows who’s getting the ball.

  425. Just Fire Baby Says:

JFB, I think the place where you and I have the biggest disagreement is on the Offensive Coordinator.

I’m of the opinion based on seeing him in action here, in Atlanta and in Seattle that he isn’t creative enough to use the talent that we have properly. They’re not precise timed route runners at WR. It’s not playing to Palmer’s strengths. And, McFadden wasn’t good under him except for 1 game.

I hope that he is able to make more of it like he did in SFO a decade ago, but since then the NFL has changed. The rules have changed and it’s opened it up a lot for WRs and QBs and I don’t think he has adapted to that.

The only good thing I can say about Knapp is that normally the running game goes well with no name RBs under him. But, these days, the running teams don’t make the playoffs for the most part.

Knapp is a guy who has had many different organizations hire him and promote him, so either they all are stupid, or he knows what he is doing.

I trust it is the latter. He isn’t going to stick to some system that is going to fail. He isn’t Mike Martz.

He will play the players to their strengths.

He knows he doesn’t have Jeff Garcia, Matt Hassleback or Mike Vick here (his previous QB’s), guys with great athleticism with either limited arm-strength or accuracy issues.

the magical age that RB’s decline is 30 …

McFadden is 3 or 4 years younger than Bush, he’s under contract and he’s twice as explosive

I see DMAC being the #1 RB in the league next season. Especially with the ZBS & WCO

i gotta go with rock. No way they get rid of the most explosive RB in football. Bush will walk and someone will pay him to be a feature back. There are plenty of RBs to be had to fill in for DMac or lighten his load. BJGE would be my first choice. He is cheap, because he doesn’t get a lot of work. Plus you have to love a RB whos career statline for fumbles is ZERO

  553. RaiderRockstar Says:

Bruce Campbell is a physical specimen. a height/weight/speed guy already under contract that obviously hasn’t made an impression anywhere on the O-Line. strength & speed are his two biggest attributes. technique must be the problem. Stable Lisfranc injuries that do not require surgery may cause an athlete to miss 2 months or more of their season. However, most athletes are able to successfully return at some point. Those injuries that are unstable, and require surgical repair, are serious injuries that almost always cause the injured athlete to miss the remainder of their season. It is also not uncommon for a high level athlete to not be able to return to the same level of athletic performance even in following seasons. Two well-known examples are Eric Rhett and Duce Staley both of whom had surgery for a serious Lisfranc injury and never successfully returned to their pre-injury form.

Agreedwith this. And Maybe Ford as well. He was another guy who didn’t see the field much. Like to see us cut housh, who has nothing left, and sign a top notch veteran WR. Schillens can hang for one more year. we also need to develop our young TE’s. That was a problem area lat year because we had to keep them in to block so much.

Brian Billick had some good things to say on 95.7 today in regard to Knapp and how hes a ZBS and WC OC coming to coach where the star running back is better in a power scheme and the QB isn’t a rollout WC type of guy, He made it sound simple, he said if your coaching a RB thats better in a power scheme, well you better run more power scheme, If your QB is more of a pocket guy don’t make him rollout. simple, huh

OK, this is the part I hope he is right about. He also said Knapp is smart enough to know he has to play to the strength of his players. I hope Knapp has become smarter since the last time he was here and has learned some things, like don’t force the ZBS on DMC. Pretty simple right, lets hope so
    =====================================

I posted this last night, now after doing more research and reading tweets from John Clayton, I am convinced Knapp will force his schemes on our players, To be honest he sounds like a guy who is to set in is ways, hes just not creative enough to think outside the box, with that said I expect big changes to come on offense, regarding personal and such, almost a complete overhaul. I myself strongly disagree if this is the route he takes, he needs to scheme to our players stengths, thats what good creative OCs do period.

    =======================================

As a part-time player, sure. The biggest problem is that Seymour’s simply not able to play full-out for 60 snaps a game anymore. 20-30 snaps would be better.

Of course, $15 mil (with 1/2 of that guaranteed) for this upcoming season is a LOT to pay for a part-time player, but the guy who made that contract is gone, so no sense lamenting it.

From everything I see of Knapp I do think he’s a very good teacher. Would be a great QB coach or RB coach or probably even O-Line coach. He is a good teacher. What I don’t think he is is a good schemer, or deviser of plays, or creative use of the weapons at hand.

knapp is not creative. Not sure why some of you on here think he will up and change his ways. Like doing what it takes to win a super bowl. Which means being a pass first team not a run heavy team which is his oc style and always has been.

    ***

False. you don’t have to be “pass happy” to make it to the playoffs or the Super Bowl. I debunked that myth earlier – perhaps you didn’t catch it
    ===============================
No, I didn’t catch that. Maybe you don’t have to be “pass happy” but 8 out of the top 10 passing teams made the playoffs. Shows that the best of the “pass happy” teams are making it.

And 4 out of the top 10 “rushing teams” made the playoffs. So over half of the “rush happy” teams did NOT make it.

  678. bcz24 Says:

A full season of CP3 at the helm, with Ford, DHB, Moore, and DMac healthy would put this offense in the GB/NE/NO realm.

    It would be scary good.

Pretty simple right, lets hope so
    =====================================

    =================
This is exactly what I am worried about. He seemed to try the exact same thing year after year despite having totally different QBs (he had Vick in Atlanta for god sakes and tried to make him a pocket passer only).

If you people want to trade a WR, then trade Murphy.
    ###################################################

Agreedwith this. And Maybe Ford as well. He was another guy who didn’t see the field much. Like to see us cut housh, who has nothing left, and sign a top notch veteran WR. Schillens can hang for one more year. we also need to develop our young TE’s. That was a problem area lat year because we had to keep them in to block so much.
    ********************

Schilens is a FA and will be gone. Murphy never returned to 100% after his injury. He still might bring a 6th round pick. Ford needs to stay. He’s our future PR & possible KOR in addition to his WR duties.

    #1 WR – Open
    #2 WR – Ford
    #3 WR – D-WOW
    #4 WR – DHB
#5 WR – TJones – From RB to run the slot
    #6 WR – Ausberry – From TE

I’d like to see us get DeSean Jackson in FA as our #1 WR position. He’s a definite play-maker and wants out of Phi.

I’d also like to see us pick up Marshawn Lynch from FA. Bush who now makes $2M will be gone. Marshawn now makes $1M. We should be able to get him for $2-$2.5M per year.

    #1 RB – DMac
    #2 RB – Lynch
    #3 RB/KOR – TJones
    #4 RB/ST – Cartwright

    Check out Matt Schaub

I think this guy is talented, but Carson Palmer is a better QB.

This guy operates in a ZBS/WCO and puts up some pretty decent numbers. People think run-first offense and assume we wont have ANY passing game. Which is pretty funny if you look at our passing offense the past 2 years under Hue Jackson and see that his fans are the guys making all the claims about us not being able to pass the ball under Knapp. See the results, fellas. spoiler alert!

    —————————

Schaub has always been a WCO system QB, even in college. I think Matt Flynn will be simuliarly successful as long as he stays in a WCO.

Palmer on the other hand hasnt been a WCO QB and that’s the concern. McKenzie said he thinks Palmer can make the transition and be a good WCO QB. It remains to be seen. He’s not going to walk right into it like Schaub or Flynn. He’s going to have to learn it.
