Raiders make Hoffman’s hire official

The Raiders confirmed the hiring of special teams coach Steve Hoffman on their Web site and through their Twitter account and a press release.

Hoffman was most recently with the Kansas City Chiefs but was not retained on Romeo Crennel’s staff.

Knapp was replaced as play-caller because Al was mad he’d turned down the HC position when offered, and just wanted out. He’ll be fine with the considerable weapons in this offense.

    ++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

“Knapp was replaced as play-caller because Al was mad he’d turned down the HC position when offered”?!

    Now that’s confusing.
His play calling was replaced by Cable’s play calling who was already head coach.

    Good luck to him.
I’d still rather have Sanders. Personally, I’m a long ball fan.

However, I look at it is this way:
Everyone on this blog wanted a head coach who could hire and fire his own coaches and that’s what we got.
Myself I wanted an experienced head coach, but Allen seems like a good gamble and a head coach is entitled to hire and fire his assistants.

    ========================================

Not confusing at all. Al could be extremely vindictive if someone got his wrong side (ask Rich Gannon and John Fox, amongst others). Al could not imagine someone not wanting the Raiders HC job, and would be very unhappy with that person. In addition, Knapp was a Kiffin guy, so there was another strike against him.

  • RaiderWeaponX

    246. Everyone assumed we’d hire a coach that would pick a GOOD staff and not comb the bargain bins for rookies and also rans.

All of his moves have been lateral or down grades.

Is Allen afraid of someone Hueing him? He has a 4 yr but reality says he could get ditched in two but I doubt it.

We;re stuck with what we’ve got. Hope it pans

yoohooo racoon where are you friend? how is this for apples to apples?

    jc last 19 starst 12 -7 with 12 ints

    palmer last 19 starts 6-13 30 picks

take the emotion out of it and admit over their last 19 starts jc is far and away better

  • JLofty

Mistic, nothing wrong with Soup he is like the 20th-25th best QB in the league. That’s great is you want to be 10-12th best team in your conference. I want more.

Hey nobody brought up the Goodell expanded the league to 34 teams and the two teams would be in L.A. It was a headline on CNN…

It’s when Al was ditching Kiffin. He interviewed Hackett, Knapp and Cable, and offered the job to Knapp, who turned him down. Knapp was on Al’s s**tlist thereafter and left at the end of the year, with Ted Tollner as his kind-of-but-not-really replacement.

what are you talking about now?

I mentioned that he could end up in kc and how bad that would be if he came in and beat us, and people wanted to compare he and palmer. Im only continuing the thread bra.

Dislike jc? fine its your right, but why try to discredit what he did for this team?

He was a leader and solid contributor for us, and we have seen a major drop off at the qb spot since his departure. Admitting these truths doesnt mean we are pining for anyone, it only means we are honest.

Until palmer does something that surpasses what jc did i will not accept the instant upgrade theory, or any upgrade theory. Palmer must prove it on the field, and he has flopped in the interim.

So when exactly was he offered head coach?

And why would he turn it down and then work under Cable who became the head coach after Kiffin?

No I like JC, just not as my starting QB, or really having to watch him play. He’d be my number one choice as a backup though. Good guy.

you want him backing up a guy that he out performed?

he should never back up palmer, he is a better player, and recent history bears witness to this fact. believe me his agent knows this.

He was offered HC mid-season when Kiffin was canned. He stayed the rest of the season because unemployed assistants are rarely hired mid-year, and a man’s gotta eat.

  • Raiderjambo

Mistic 254. If that’s the stats then so it be. However, as another poster stated last week JC at this time in his playing career should re-evaluate his worth to a franchise. For example: go to the browns with heir apparent RGIII, and get the carp knocked out of you for 2-3 years (if that, remember the division they are in). Or sit behind CP as a backup making a good salary, knowing that a large amount of the RAIDER NATION rem embers your good times, and have to to be inserted when CP does/or will screw up. You’re still a hero, making millions, and who knows, have a better chance of winning that SB ring with the Silver & Black.

Are we talking about the same Al Davis?
Think about it: Al offers him HC and he says no thanks, I’ll just keep my old job?
    And Al says: Sure sweetie.

    Al interviewed many people–always.
That doesn’t mean that an HC job was offered to Knapp.
Maybe someone on here said so but that doesn’t make it reality.

    ********************************************************

I don’t know about Hue screwing him; I think Hue knew that Boller wasn’t the answer and went out and got the best QB he could find to replace JC. I have to believe that he did that because he wanted to win. It’s not like he cut the man the minute Al passed.

That said, I am with you in thanking JC for what he did do, and that’s bring some semblance of competence back to the QB position in Oakland. He conducted himself with class and dignity, and always gave his best effort. For that, all Raider fans should be grateful.

    I hear that.
The Raiders belong there, the ghosts of many greats will walk there..it’s a perfect location…
but Oakland is never-write it down-never going to re-build that stadium for the Raiders.

It’s a dumb stadium built in the sixties when some morons got together and said, hey let’s build a stadium for a football AND a baseball team.
The whiners are going to build a real stadium in the south bay and are willing to share it with the Raiders.
How long before we OWN it?

  • Raiderjambo

275&276. Both posts not a truer word was written.
    275. I also thank JC for the class and dignity he brought not only to the franchise as a QB, but also as a total TEAM PLAYER. If he does move on I wish him all the best.
    276. Only wish some “rebel moneybags” al a Trump or Cuban would love to invest in a new stadium for our beloved RAIDERS, for a minority share in the franchise. Wishful thinking I guess!
