ESPN: DeFilippo returns as QB coach

By Jerry McDonald - NFL Writer
Wednesday, February 8th, 2012 at 10:30 am in Oakland Raiders.

John DeFilippo will rejoin offensive coodinator Greg Knapp and coach the Raiders’ quarterbacks, according to ESPN’s Adam Schefter.

DiFilippo has spent the 2010 and 2011 seasons coaching quarterbacks at San Jose State and was with the New York Jets in 2009. In 2007 and 2008, DeFilippo coached the Raiders quarterbacks, with Josh McCown, Daunte Culpepper, Andrew Walter and JaMarcus Russell all getting playing time.

Oakland went without a quarterbacks coach last season, with head coach Hue Jackson and offensive coordinator Al Saunders handling the position.

DeFilippo becomes the third consecutive coach taken from the college ranks, following defensive coordinator Josh Tarver (Stanford) and wide receivers coach Ted Gilmore (USC).

In other news, NFL.com’s Jason LaCanfora says Al Saunders will stay on with the Raiders as a senior assistant. He was the offensive coordinator last season under then-coach Hue Jackson. Saunders was replaced as offensive coordinator by Greg Knapp.
Also, the Raiders reportedly hired Keith Burns, presumably to be their defensive backs coach. The news comes from footballscoop.com/thescoop.
Burns was the defensive backs coach for Ole Miss in 2011 and Kansas State in 2010. Before that, he coached at San Jose State, Tulsa, Arkansas and Southern Cal, among others.

Trade Gasol to Boston for Rondo and trade Bynum to Orlando for Dwight before he re-injures a knee. Remember, if we do not get Dwight, the Mavs may get Dwight and Williams this offseason.

  13. J-Raider Says:

NFL.com is reporting that 2011 Oakland offensive coordinator Al Saunders is staying with the team as a senior assistant. The report said Saunders had a year added to his contract that will run through 2013. Saunders won’t be offensive coordinator or quarterbacks coach, two roles he covered last year. His specific role is unknown.

Still, I think it is good that he is being retained in some role. This is a young staff. Saunders is an NFL veteran. His experience will help even if it is not in a major role.

Meanwhile, ESPN’s Adam Schefter reports the team has hired John Defilippo as its quarterbacks coach. He was Oakland’s quarterback coach in 2007-08, which were JaMarcus Russell’s first two seasons. Defilippo has been the quarterbacks coach at San Jose State the past two years.

He reunites with offensive coordinator Greg Knapp. He was the offensive coordinator in Oakland in 2007-08. Yes, Oakland’s offense was anemic those years, but the talent was depleted. The two coaches are inheriting much better talent now.

New Oakland coach Dennis Allen (who worked with Knapp in Atlanta) is clearly comfortable with Knapp and Knapp is comfortable with Defilippo.

I’m sorry, but the idea of giving up on a #1 draft pick after 2 years is ridiculous.

The guy played hurt last year and there have been ZERO whispers about his lack of dedication or preparation.

Aaron Curry made some mistakes last year. Most of those in coverage where he had NO business being. But there were times when he was outright beastly on the field. We need to resign him and trust that better coaching will have him in more position to succeed than fail.

Routt’s a keeper. We just need someone else on the other side.
    Aaron Ross!

  28. Rekleiner Says:

retread greg take a knapp. whew. show me that you’re a better offensive coordinator than the 7 STEP DROPS you made jaCARCUS russell make. even though russell was a terrible player, you put him in the worst position. 1-2-3-4-5-6-7 steps, OH sack. the season of sacks. it was horrid. his offensive playcalling stunk. the fans let alone the other team knew what we were gonna do.

i still dont see how greg knapp can fit into the mold of our current quarterbacks. jason campbell and carson palmer–BOTH of which are long ball quarterbacks. they are guys who have to stay in the pocket. jason campbell had a way better pocket presence by a MILLION TIMES than palmer. he could at least get to the outside and make a play, where palmer’s legs were like stuck in the mud or in concrete. he can NOT evade a tackle in the pocket to save his life or our team for crying out loud.

he’s a good quarterback when it comes from passing from the pocket, but any pressure on him and he can not evade for dogcrap. and we’re gonna expect him to run the west coast offense??? knapp is gonna expect palmer to run to one side, run to the other side, keep the play alive…well let me tell ya partna it aint gonna happen. it didnt happen last year and certainly not gonna be something that happens this season. i dont care what the excuse was last year, carson palmer has legs of stone, and they dont move very fast at all.

    greg knapp = bad hire.

  29. daraider09 Says:

We are fine at the WR position.
Theres just no 2 ways about it.

We need to focus 1000% on the defensive side of the ball. Whether its 4-3 or 3-4 that is the problem of this team.

Offense was extremely injured and went through a lot of BS circumstances and bad luck and still finished 9th in the entire NFL in total offense. Those arent excuses, they are facts.

People penalize raider WRs in their evaluations for missing games due to injury, but ignore the talent when they’re actually on the field.

Look outside of a box score for once.

ALl the WRs get back on the field in week 17, STILL WITHOUT DMC and Carson throws for 417.

    Why is this ignored?

The entire season is the defense’s fault. Not the WRs or QB.

    MAKE SOMEONE PUNT!!

  30. J Hill Says:

Curry is already signed for this season.

    ——————————————————-

Yes he is, for one more year, right?

YA was suggesting he may be cut to avoid paying him 5 million.

My comment was pretty much directed and that statement, but you are right, he is under contract.

We need to keep it that way. Restructure him and add some years, but keep him on the team!

  32. J-Raider Says:

In 14 games in 2011, Porter made 52 tackles and intercepted one pass. (Thu Jan 26)

The 14 games marks the injury-prone Porter’s most as a pro in his fourth season. Yet, he managed fewer tackles than either of the previous two seasons, in which he played in only 12 games apiece. Towards the end of the year, Porter was being pushed for playing time by Patrick Robinson. Porter is a free agent and the Saints would like to re-sign him (Saints’ fans still view his in an idolized light given his Super Bowl-clinching interception two years ago), but with more players a higher priority and the recent depth on roster at cornerback, Porter may be headed elsewhere.

yeah i hear ya man.. didnt realize he stayed hurt. apparently he is being shown the door in new orleans

  37. Raider O Says:

    DMAC,

T Porter missed 8 games the last 2 seasons I think. That’s not that bad.

  38. J-Raider Says:

    34.
thats exactly why we need to cut some of our “keepers”
like routt, even though he has a guaranteed contract, once hes cut we retain the cap hit which would be close to 13 million for 1 player. we could easily sign 2 or 3 free agents with that alone.

  39. Raider O Says:

    Arizona Cardinals             $118,787,639

    TIGHTENING THE BELT

Teams that will be at, or over the projected salary cap once they’ve signed the rookie class. These teams must purge their roster moving forward. The higher the cap number, the more drastic the cut backs need to be.

    St. Louis Rams                   $120,982,904

    Detroit Lions                      $122,760,121

    New York Giants              $124,735,807

    New York Jets                   $128,092,733

    Dallas Cowboys                 $128,910,735

    Carolina Panthers            $129,962,768

    Oakland Raiders               $140,861,316

    Pittsburgh Steelers         $149,885,537

After taking a look at the early numbers my hope is you’ll understand why the Dolphins can’t do it big in free agency right now (quarterback upgrade is team owner Steve Ross‘ priority, then discount shopping from bargains) without restructuring plenty of contracts, or cutting a few high profile players.

Also, keep in mind the free agent class will get enhanced over the next few weeks as teams try to get their books in order. Those players can sign with a new team immediately, but keep in mind they are usually damaged goods (injury history, declining play, problematic personalities, etc.).

    Dalai Lama according to Wiki:
The Dalai Lama is a high lama in the Gelug or “Yellow Hat” branch of Tibetan Buddhism. The name is a combination of the Mongolian word далай (dalai) meaning “Ocean” and the Tibetan word བླ་མ་ bla-ma (with a silent “b”) meaning “teacher”.[1] According to the current Dalai Lama[citation needed], the Tibetan word “lama” corresponds precisely to the better known Sanskrit word “guru”. In religious terms, the Dalai Lama is believed by his devotees to be the rebirth of a long line of tulkus who are considered to be manifestations of the bodhisattva of compassion, Avalokiteśvara. Traditionally, the Dalai Lama is thought of as the latest reincarnation of a series of spiritual leaders who have chosen to be reborn in order to enlighten others. The Dalai Lama is often thought to be the leader of the Gelug School, but this position belongs officially to the Ganden Tripa, which is a temporary position appointed by the Dalai Lama who, in practice, exerts much influence. The line of Dalai Lamas began as a lineage of spiritual teachers; the 5th Dalai Lama assumed political authority over Tibet.

So now we have 3 coaches with ties to Lane Kiffin, Knapp was his OC, Filippo QB coach and Gilmore was his choice for WR’s coach before he backed down.

I’m guessing Knapp’s input was the primary reason we brought those guys is.

    *****************

If you remember the Raiders Offensive staff was gutted after the disastrous 2006 season and Kiffin hired Atlanta’s offensive staff almost lock stock and barrel at the Senior bowl after Mora was fired as HC there. It was a package of Cable and others that came with Knapp. These guys have history and background together from Atlanta and I mean DA as well.
    ================================

On-field incidentsIn September 2010, Finnegan was fined $5,000 for throwing New York Giants wide receiver Steve Smith to the ground by his helmet.[3] In October 2010, Finnegan was fined $10,000 for unnecessary roughness after hitting Denver Broncos guard Chris Kuper after Kuper’s helmet was off. After this incident, the NFL warned Finnegan that similar violations in the future could lead to increased discipline.[4] On November 28, 2010, Finnegan was involved in a fist fight with Houston Texans wide receiver Andre Johnson. Each player was ejected, and each subsequently fined $25,000.[5] His history with Johnson dates back to at least 2009, in the September 20 matchup between the two teams. After Johnson had beaten Finnegan’s coverage, Finnegan jumped on Johnson’s back before the ball reached them, resulting in Finnegan being flagged for pass interference.

“Problem with this was that they weren’t particularly successful in Atlanta (never finished in above #16 in scoring or total yards). And it also didn’t turn out so good with us (yeah, I know we had crappy personnel).”

Not sure where you are getting your Stats. I did a search last night and got higher ratings in Atlanta ~12th (twice)in yardage. I got mine from NFL.com…. Regarding with “us” the offense though rated 25th in yardage for 2007 was drastically improved from 2006 with perhaps with the same or worse personal than the year before. They had a successful running game even when no one respected play action because our QBs were so bad. We actually had decent ball control and clock control that year even though we went 4-12 and had a terrible run defense that year.

Our defense will improve with better coaching. We would have been fine last year if not for switching DC’s. Solid defensive coaching starting from otas, minicamp thru TC and preseason, would DRASTICALLY improve this same group of guys, and I am sure there will be a few additions.

Saunders is an Air Coryell throwback guy. The days of Carson Palmer heaving it up for grabs are over – hopefully.

Knapp’s offense will focus more on timing, precise routes and excellent blocking execution (from everybody – not just the OL). I crack up at some of these posters that think that Knapp is a bad hire or retread based only on myopic observation of what he did in his short stint as the Raiders HC. In that era, could you have dealt an OC a shorter hand to play with? JaDumbass forced as the starter. Lane Kiffin vs Big Al and his overhead projector. Curry and Porter as your top WRs to work with. Barry Sims your starting LT. The list goes on . . .

Look at what he did in his other stints as OC in his career to see what he’s capable of without the Raiders of old baggage:

2004-2006 Atlanta, offense ranked 16th then 12th twice in points scored (middle of the pack is not bad for his first OC gig)

2009 Seattle, took the 2007 28th ranked offense and brought it up 7 points to 21

2010 Houston, #3 offense in yards per game, despite starting an undrafted RB (Foster is a nobody in another system)

2010 Houston, #13 total offense despite losing his starting QB, backup QB for several games, top WR for many games, and his starting RB for several. They were on pace for much higher before the injuries piled up.

    JERRY!

Knapp’s background has its roots in a West Coast-type offensive system which utilizes quarterback rollouts and bootlegs and predominantly a zone blocking style of offense.

Saunders’ coaching tree, which dates back to Don Coryell and the San Diego Chargers, stressed more of a downfield type of passing attack. With Palmer being a quarterback more suited for dropback passing than throwing on the move, Saunders can assist in blending the two systems.

No, he lead the team for almost 40 years. The first two decades were great and the third one was passable.

The fourth decade (2001-2011) included both the longest streak in NFL history of losing more than 10 games in a season and the Raiders becoming a national punchline. It got so bad that we were EXCITED to go 8-8 two straight years.

One Superbowl appearance in two decades – a blowout against a coach that the owner traded away.

Yes, Al helped shape the NFL. That doesn’t mean his way is the only way to win football games, nor does it mean the Raiders should eternally be beholden to one way of playing the game.

In today’s NFL, if you don’t adapt to your situation you get left behind. That’s what Al didn’t understand, and that’s why people are, on the whole, pretty excited about a new era of Raider football – where WINNING is paramount, and the team is “allowed” to do whatever it takes to win.
