Raiders confirm Saunders’ return

By Steve Corkran
Wednesday, February 8th, 2012 at 12:27 pm in Oakland Raiders.

The Raiders confirmed through a press release that Al Saunders will be back for a second season. Saunders’ new title is senior offensive assistant.
Saunders was the Raiders offensive coordinator in 2011. However, new head coach Dennis Allen hired Greg Knapp to be his offenive coordinator.
It’s likely that Saunders will be a resource for Knapp, Allen, new quarterbacks coach John DeFilippo and wide receivers coach Ted Gilmore. (Note: the Raiders have not confirmed the hiring of DeFilippo and Gilmore).
Allen now is free to turn his attention toward finding a defensive line coach, linebackers coach and tight ends coach to round out his staff.
Saunders interviewed with the Kansas City Chiefs for their offensive coordinator vacancy. The Chiefs ultimately went with Brian Daboll.
Saunders was under contract with the Raiders for 2012. So, it makes sense to keep him around and tap into his vast knowleged rather than to let him walk and pay him for nothing. ESPN reported that the Raiders extended Saunders’ contract through 2013.

    Routt’s contract was only guaranteed if he was on the roster as of Friday.

    Great move.

    My buddy just text me that.

    It is a great move. I wonder if McK franchises Bush or Branch and I wonder who gets the long term deal between Branch and Bush now with Routts contract gone.

    @HayesDaze37

    I like your comment, i really like MM34 have done since he was drafted, love his passion etc.. But he is always that guy in the highlight reels getting burned, whiffing a tackle.. If he is costing us points and ultimatly games then well…we will see i guess

    The problem with Mitchell is that he gets second round money and plays like minimum wage.

    I think Seymour would probably prefer to get back on the East Coast, than listen to the Rah, Rah of a little kid DC.
