Raiders cut Routt

By Jerry McDonald - NFL Writer
Thursday, February 9th, 2012 at 2:56 pm in Oakland Raiders.

The new regime of the Raiders has begun erasing what it believes to be the mistakes of the past, with the first big move coming in the release of cornerback Stanford Routt Thursday.

Routt was signed last offseason to a three-year, $31.5 million contract extension that at the time made him the third highest cornerback in the NFL just a few days before the NFL lockout began.

Routt was retained by owner Al Davis while at the same time the club made no effort to re-sign Nnamdi Asomugha, who eventually signed with the Philadelphia Eagles.

A later restructure boosted the value of the deal to five years and $54.5 million.

Routt’s contract reportedly guaranteed him $20 million, meaning the Raiders could be out that amount depending on wording of the deal. Adam Caplan reported that Routt’s $5 million base salary was guaranteed if he was on the roster as of Friday. Routt still is due a $5 million roster bonus, which is guaranteed.

In 2012, Routt had four interceptions _ second on the team to free safety Matt Giordano _ but played inconsistently and led the team in penalties with 17.

Following the press conference announcing the hiring of coach Dennis Allen, general manager Reggie McKenzie said the team would begin examining contracts and and personnel while putting their financial house in order.

“From where we are, we’ve got some contracts that are kind of out of whack, but in discussions and viewing the cap situation, we should be fine,;; McKenzie said. “We don’t have to make wholesale changes.’’

Routt’s release would seem to serve notice that anyone making a big salary on the Raiders’ underachieving defense could be affected.

Defensive tackle Richard Seymour is in the second year of a two-year, $30 million extension with $15 million due this season, and linebacker Kamerion Wimbley signed a five-year, $48 million contract with a reported $29 million in guarantees.

A year ago, the Raiders starting cornerbacks were Nnamdi Asomugha and Routt. As of now, the only cornerbacks under contract are second-year players Chimdi Chekwa and DeMarcus Van Dyke, as well as veteran Chris Johnson. It’s still possible that first-year defensive coordinator Jason Tarver will follow through with the plan to convert free safety Michael Huff to cornerback next season.

The Raiders also announced the addition of two more coaches, confirming the hire of Keith Burns to be the assistant special teams coach and Johnny Holland to coach linebackers. Burns was the secondary coach at Mississippi, Holland the linebackers coach for the Houston Texans.

After games like MIA and GB with CP compared to games like NE, PIT, MIA, TN, etc. with, there isn’t much of an argument here.

    If anything, it’s a wash.

And in the games CP was being blown out, no deer in the headlights look and didn’t get pulled for “Garbagekowski.” Actually got some garbage time TDs in and was able to move the ball, unlike his predecessor.

  • raiderinparadise

with routt gone, you know Huff is pissing his pants too.

Branch will get a nice contract and Huff isnt even in Branchs league when it comes to talent and play.

    Huff might get booted too.

  • LA to TheBay

In an effort to earn the respect of teammates and the fan base he stopped sliding and now you want to bash him for that too.

    —————

No, I just wanted him to slide RIGHT.
    ===================

Bottom line is you and others never wanted him and would never be pleased with anything he does.

Even if its leading us to first place, coming form behind to win, undefeated in the division, unselfishly leading the team and going 12-7 in his starts.

    ———————

Also untrue. I was talking up JC big time going into and during that NE game. I was telling my buddy, look at his eyes, he’s moving defenders around, making smart decisions, being efficient and then…. well, back to what JC always had been.

And please stop giving him the W for Cleveland. W goes to Shane Lechler, LOL.

I would have predicted that way before Routt.

  • raidertalk

Good work ReggieMac. I’ve said it many times, with the new rule changes it is simply not worth it to invest heavily in the CB position. The refs call ticky tack fouls now like touching the WR (recall the A Curry clean tackle on the TE in the minnsota game). It is simply better to invest in other areas today. If pats can make it to the playoffs consistenly using a make-shift secondary of players(recall the WR converted to secondary)–then we should do it.

Sad to see anyone lose his job tho, but he probably made more money then I will in my entire life anyway.

  • raiderinparadise

Yeah I don’t care about Huff or Routt, they been there both a while and Huffs 2010 season was a fluke.

Huff is a loyal raider, he likes the organization and has defended it many times. but his play is just never great, he drops to his knees before he tackles or wraps up, its awful to watch.

Hiram Eugene will be in camp, kid can cover some ground in passing game, but that stiff arm still comes up lol we all know which one.

Giordano has experience with Allen so he will stay.

  • raiderinparadise

    Chimdi Chekwa looked very promising.

So did Sterling Moore tho !!!!! sucks … i thought his pre-season and camp was amazing from all reviews, except Hue, Hue loved Lito Shepard and his terrible old slow useless self.

    Dirt Lot,

it didn’t take McKenzie, Allen & Tarver long to figure out Stan Routt wasn’t in our plans for the future.

Dennis & Jason are both former DB’s.

DA is actually a Super Bowl champion DB Coach.

I mean, we don’t even have a DB’s Coach hired to evaluate Stan Routt to see if he’s “fixable”

When your secondary gives up 60 TD’s in 2 years, I’d say wholesale changes are required.

YOU PEOPLE love to blame Chuck B, but in reality at least half of the blame falls on the players for not executing. For every head scratcher defensive play call Chuck made, there were about 6 head scratcher offensive play calls Hue made …

    ^^^^^^^^
Please don’t make excuses or pity Chuck Bresnahan.

    He was terrible!

I saw a lot of Chimdi at OSU. Hard worker, team leader, fast, tough.

He’ll be good for us, I think.

Probably DVD too but I think we still need to add a solid vet.

Finnegan’s name gets tossed around a lot. That would be nice… gotta wonder what kind of pricetag a good corner like that will bring and if it’s anything approaching Routt’s, gotta wonder why did we release Routt to begin with?

  • RaiderDomination

Seymour, Kelly, Wimbley, Palmer, and Huff should all take pay cuts or catch a ride with Routt.

Ok, I want JaMarcus Russell back at QB.

He still can develop, it was Al’s fault.

    Is that ok Raider Dell?

Some rational thought must go into opinions or else you just formulate crap in the blogs. Palmer has the support of the whole coaching staff, the new one I might add and including our new GM.

To say Palmer “sux” is not an opinion, its someone being a douche.

Ha Ha. Glad to see someone with a great consciousness.

Yeah I think Gannon should be around the facility with Palmer. Gannon never had excuses, he worked so hard for his teamates to be prepared and make plays.

Palmer wants to win a ring, he wants to supplant his dramas in cincy. Palmer has my full support in the new rigeme I think he will shine. The AFC is not good at all. Exception Patriots and Houston when they have Schaub. That being said, oakland is not far from being a top AFC team in just one off-season. Palmer knows this and he has a window fo oppurtunity.

JC is a mentally fragile dude, Mistic.

Pulled for “Garbagekowski” twice and will likely not be retained by the new, presumably more intelligent regime.

They came in here with a clean slate and have already released a guy that was rather unexpected to be released.

JC was 11-7 with us and did some good things.

CP was 4-5 and did some good things. There is obviously room for improvement.

But CP in his second game as a Raider with no offseason came in and threw for 300, 3TD 3INT and made some beauties that few QBs can make in the NFL.

JC’s second game as a Raider, he is pulled at halftime after not being able to move the ball at all and replaced with “Garbagekowski” who proceeded to win the game with DHB as the leading WR (at a time where nobody ever thought it possible for DHB to do so). Full offseason.

    That tells me a lot.

CP was brought in for two reasons:

    1) Salvage season and give us a shot at playoffs… which he did. He was GREAT when it counted in season finale (and also v. Detroit). D blew it.

    2) Be the long term answer for us at QB.

None of know how #2 will go yet.

I’m going to sit back and watch. I think most of CP’s doubters will be pleasantly surprised (or disappear like a few did during the 3 game win streak).

  • raiderinparadise

TO BE 100% HONEST. RICH GANNON WAS THE BEST TRUE QB TO EVER PLAY FOR THE RAIDERS.

If you really evealuate it, nobody was better than him.

and don’t try to tell me plunkett or stabler. lol thats impossible.

  • bcz24

no worries bra, but i cant let you say “jc wouldnt have won anymore games without ford moore and dmac than palmer”

He already won without all of them.

Your favorites are your favorites and thats fine, but dont make stuff up
    *************
Make stuff up? Jason Campbell won exactly ZERO games in Oakland without DMac or JFord in the line up.

The first SD game in 2010, Ford wasn’t starting at receiver yet, but he did play and assist in the return game. I will give you that one. One game.

Thats it. Dont tell me Jason Campbell won games without his best weapons. He didn’t. Its a fact.

  • bcz24

And really, make no mistake, the first SD game in ’10 was won because of the the punt blocks and turnover returned for a TD at the end, NOT because of anythink Campbell did.

Of course JC never threw 3, or even 4 picks.

    He was the dumpoff king.

Guys would be wide open down field, and at the first sign of a rush, dumpoff. Dumpoff. Dumpoff.

No, you don’t want picks trying to make a play, but no team wants the Dumpoff King.

    ^^^^^^^
They sure do and not a very good one at that. Then again, maybe it’s because they don’t have a dynamic ZBS RB like the Texans do.

The Packers need to get a true good ZBS RB and get their running game going next year to balance out their offense a bit. If they do that, they will back in the Super Bowl next year, plus their defense needs to get back to where it was 2 years ago.

Len Pasquarelli of the Sports XChange confirms that keeping free agent SS Tyvon Branch remains a “priority” for new Raiders management.
Pasquarelli suggests Branch may even get the franchise tag, which would cost the Raiders a reasonable $6 million, if no long-term accord can be reached. The club’s ideal scenario would be to extend Branch long term and place the tag on free agent Michael Bush. Per Pasquarelli, Branch “comes very highly recommended by people (Raiders GM Reggie) McKenzie trusts.”
