Raiders cut Routt

The new regime of the Raiders has begun erasing what it believes to be the mistakes of the past, with the first big move coming in the release of cornerback Stanford Routt Thursday.

Routt was signed last offseason to a three-year, $31.5 million contract extension that at the time made him the third highest cornerback in the NFL just a few days before the NFL lockout began.

Routt was retained by owner Al Davis while at the same time the club made no effort to re-sign Nnamdi Asomugha, who eventually signed with the Philadelphia Eagles.

A later restructure boosted the value of the deal to five years and $54.5 million.

Routt’s contract reportedly guaranteed him $20 million, meaning the Raiders could be out that amount depending on wording of the deal. Adam Caplan reported that Routt’s $5 million base salary was guaranteed if he was on the roster as of Friday. Routt still is due a $5 million roster bonus, which is guaranteed.

In 2012, Routt had four interceptions _ second on the team to free safety Matt Giordano _ but played inconsistently and led the team in penalties with 17.

Following the press conference announcing the hiring of coach Dennis Allen, general manager Reggie McKenzie said the team would begin examining contracts and and personnel while putting their financial house in order.

“From where we are, we’ve got some contracts that are kind of out of whack, but in discussions and viewing the cap situation, we should be fine,;; McKenzie said. “We don’t have to make wholesale changes.’’

Routt’s release would seem to serve notice that anyone making a big salary on the Raiders’ underachieving defense could be affected.

Defensive tackle Richard Seymour is in the second year of a two-year, $30 million extension with $15 million due this season, and linebacker Kamerion Wimbley signed a five-year, $48 million contract with a reported $29 million in guarantees.

A year ago, the Raiders starting cornerbacks were Nnamdi Asomugha and Routt. As of now, the only cornerbacks under contract are second-year players Chimdi Chekwa and DeMarcus Van Dyke, as well as veteran Chris Johnson. It’s still possible that first-year defensive coordinator Jason Tarver will follow through with the plan to convert free safety Michael Huff to cornerback next season.

The Raiders also announced the addition of two more coaches, confirming the hire of Keith Burns to be the assistant special teams coach and Johnny Holland to coach linebackers. Burns was the secondary coach at Mississippi, Holland the linebackers coach for the Houston Texans.

    This Campbell-Palmer debate is a joke. Palmer is heads and shoulders better than Campbell and everyone knows it.

    But really it came down to which QB played with the best Raiders player, McFadden….Campbell was lucky, Palmer wasn’t. It is like arguing about John Paxon v. Steve Kerr….when everyone knows that it really came down to whether Jordan was playing or not. Campbell played with our MJ, Palmer played with the 94-95 Bulls.

    And please stop the trade Mcfadden non-sense. that man is a beast and is arguably the most explosive RB in the game when healthy.

    But let’s not go too far. Big Rich Seymour is a dominant force that offensive coordinators game plan for EVERY week. He definitely needs to restructure but that man is directly responsible for the culture change the past couple years. 8-8 isn’t anything to brag about but beats the hell out of 4-12.

    =======================================

    Did he help with the culture change? Unquestionably.

    Was he once the kind of dominant player you described? Yes.

    Is he now? NO. He can still rush the passer, but far too often can be handled in the running game by a single good blocker.

    He’s now a part-time player, and should be paid as such, not $15 mil for this upcoming season.

    Straight from the official Packers website:

    “Campen made the transition from assistant offensive line coach smoothly, having worked extensively with Colledge, Spitz and Moll when all three were rookie draft choices in 2006. Alongside Joe Philbin, now the offensive coordinator, Campen helped teach the zone-blocking scheme to the youngsters and the veterans, who all relate well to him as a former player.”

    No, dont get it twisted dude. I know Manning is a better QB than Palmer. I was just making a simple point. He said Peyton is better because he throws less interceptions. I proved that not to be true, and added the same extra dramatic flair you guys add just to add to my point.

    The fact is, Palmer is a better QB than anyone available to us right now. You can hate on him all you want, but that doesn’t change anything.

    Jason Campbell’s 4 victories:

    WK1 = DMAC runs for 150 yards

    WK3 = DMAC runs for 171 yards & 2 TD’s

    WK5 = Al Davis just died. Defense goes ape ish and stuffs Arian Foster. 3 sacks & 2 INT’s on Schaub and a forced fumble. 4 FG’s by Seabass

    WK6 = DMAC runs for 91 yards & 1 TD. Lechler fake punt pass to Boss for a TD. JC injured (only completed 6 passes)

    Without Darren McFadden and an emotionally charged up Chuck B defense after Al’s passing?

    Jason Campbell would have been 0-4 last year and ROG would be calling for his head

    —————————————————-
    My point exactly RR!!! JC does just enough to let the play makers around him win the game.

    Palmer makes the better throws down the field but he throws his one or two or more INTs a game and he is 2-2 those same 4 games. Of course this can’t be proven but that is what instincts tell me. I don’t no man.

    LOL!!!

    You are all paid like you we part of the 85 Bears or something, when in fact you have all been part of weak azz defenses the entire time you have been in Oakland.

    That was 7 starters getting way overpaid, on a defense that blew. Now were are down to 6 starters….time for them to restructure or walk because if they have proven one thing in their time with the Raiders, it is that their contributions do not make the Raiders’ defense even AVERAGE!

    Fk all of you! Restructure and let us bring in some real defensive players, or just get the fk out and go be lazy-overpaid bums on other teams.

    Everything I heard going into that draft was that Huff didn’t have the hips to play CB in the NFL. Nothing I have seen in the NFL tells me different. Huff is a waste of cap space. We can find all kinds of free safeties that rarely make plays, can’t tackle and can’t cover WRs for a much lower price.

    I constantly see the comments about Campbell vs Palmer. P

    lamer is a far better QB despite any stats or meaningless supporting crap that campbell is good? Campbell sucks, he had his best year of his career and his numbers were around 77 QB rating? wowwwwww who gives a sh&*

    Palmer has been an all-pro in this league top 3 at his position few years back. Campbell could never dream of being a top 15 QB in this league, any credit he deserved was to jacoby ford in 2010 catching all his terribel throws against KC chiefs and Moore against the bills in 2011.

    He cant even slide without fumblnig or hurting himself.

    He is a mouth breather.

    and his picks against the patriots you wouldnt find even using pop-warner bloopers on youtube.
