Raiders hire replacement for Waufle

By Steve Corkran
Monday, February 13th, 2012 at 2:10 pm in Oakland Raiders.

New Raiders coach Dennis Allen dipped into a familiar location to find a replacement for departed defensive line coach Mike Waufle. Allen on Monday hired Texas A&M defensive line coach Terrell Williams to succeed Waufle, according to Rivals.com.
Williams 37, spent the past two seasons as the Aggies defensive line coach. Coincidentally, Allen played for Texas A&M and got his coaching start with the college.
The Aggies ranked 12th nationally against the run last season, at an average of 101.9 yards per game. Stopping the run has been a huge priority of past Raiders coaches, with little success.
Texas A&M ranked 90th against the run before Williams’ arrival. They improved to 30th in 2010 and jumped to 12th last year.
Last season, the Raiders allowed 5.1 yards per carry and finished near the bottom of the league in average yards per game.
Williams also coached the defensive line at Purdue, Akron and Youngstown State before he joined the Aggies staff.
One of Williams’ prized pupils was defensive end Cliff Avril, who played for the Detroit Lions last season and is a prospective free agent.
The Raiders have not confirmed Williams’ hire. Same goes for the reported hires of Ted Gilmore, Johnny Lynn and Mark Hutson.

I wonder if Joe Linta(his agent) is going to agree to restruture Wimbley’s deal.
He put “Wimbley no one of the highest paid linebackers in the league” on his home page.

“The two highest paid players in terms of salary are Carson Palmer ($12.5 million) and outside linebacker Kamerion Wimbley ($11 million).”

I can’t think that a LB who can’t cover is 2nd highest paid player on the team.

Another terrible Al Davis deal …. one of the many leftover in the dirty diaper he left McKenizie.

    Routt was another.

hmmm alll theses guys played on one of the worst defenses in the NFL last year.

  32. stevenTyler Says:

As bad as everything on defense was last year, i believe the defense can have individuals that play better and with an aggressive system they could jump up to an effective unit that supports our explosive offense.

  33. Raider Riff Says:

idiots. all of you calling for db’s.

db’s are only as good as the pressure on the qb. teams are built from the inside out.

great d-line, plus good lb’s, plus average secondary = superbowl winning giants defense.

just get us some good LB play and the rest will take care of itself.

  35. YoungAmerican Says:

Avril and Wimbley could be Allen’s Miller and Dumervil in Oakland. If the Raiders make a big splash in free agency on anyone not named Mario Williams, it should be Avril.

Brandon Carr would be good, too, but if the Raiders can’t get pressure on the QB a CB isn’t going to do them much good.

Would rather find an FA who is a proven commodity when it comes to putting the QB on the ground, and then get some low-cost FAs in the secondary and depth guys at LB.

    DE – Williams or Avril
    DB – Marshall or Porter
    LB – Woodyard and/or Ruud

It remains to be seen how much money the Raiders will have to throw around in free agency, though.

  36. YoungAmerican Says:

DVD is 180 – still on the light side. His frame would allow him to bulk up to 200 easily, though. It might slow him down a bit, but he has speed to spare.

The kid can cover anyone, but his awareness is far from where it needs to be. Hopefully Allen can coach the kid up, because he has all the tools. Would rather DVD didn’t turn into another John Bowie.

Ok, you ready? Kid didn’t even start @ Miami.
He was a Al Davis pick for his 40 time, admit it.
Rod Woodson said he had “best hips in draft” hmmmm?
He was raped all pre-season repeatedly.
Regular season he was as well and easily blocked by WR in the run game, he is a twig, for dime or nickel back at best.

and don’t give me a “rookie” excuse. Chimdi Cheka came in and played very well.

  38. sacraiderfan Says:

RaiderRiff is 100% right (maybe not the idiots part), but with the way they enforce rules today, pass d starts with QB pressure. NY and NE have serviceable DBs, at best. Look at how much pressure NYG Dline gets and how their secondary is rarley exposed. Look at most of the “best” CBs in the league weren’t in the palyoffs.

What does Boller bring to the table?

    ——————————————————-

    NOTHING!

Yet Pryor couldn’t leap frog him on the depth chart.

Boller was so bad, then team traded a king’s ransom instead of just letting him hand the ball off for 6 weeks.

When they traded for another guy, they still kept Boller ahead of Pryor.
    ==================

That means absolutely nothing. Pryor was a rook that was forced to miss all of camp , pre season, and part of the regular season. he had no chance to compete for any spot on the depth chart, this is why along with bollers starting qb and league experience pryor remained at 3rd.

This says nothing about pryors ability or inability to move up.

  41. YoungAmerican Says:

He didn’t look lost in coverage. He just never looked for the ball, and a good QB will take advantage of that all day long.

If he can learn that element of the game, DVD will be a very good player. That’s the hardest part of the game to grasp, though – even if you have all the physical skills in the world.

I’m not going to write the kid off. He doesn’t look nearly as bad as many Raider project players – especially DBs – have in the past. But he has a long way.

I said it before and I stand by it – if he becomes a good NFL player (and he certainly is capable of it), it won’t be until his 3rd season.

  42. YoungAmerican Says:

I like Pryor’s attitude, but I haven’t seen anything from him that would lead me to believe he can be a top-10 NFL QB. Hopefully he puts it together, because he’s a scary athlete.

  43. raiderinparadise Says:

I’m not writing DVD completely off, he can run stride for stride with any WR. BUT he will never be any help in tackling or run support. I want complete corners, not a specialist. I hope he can become a dime/nickel help.

  44. DennisAllensVisor Says:

Not starting at Miami doesnt really speak to someone being bad.

So Deion Sanders, not that great of a corner?

  51. YoungAmerican Says:

I’d even be happy with Pryor being a top-15 QB like Palmer. But eventually the Raiders would need an elite season from him if they plan on Pryor being the guy who leads them to a championship. Teams don’t win championships if they have to hide their QBs. Even when Dilfer and Johnson won it – they did so performing at a very high level. Even if it was their only season performing on that level. Can’t plan on flukes, though.

  52. raiderinparadise Says:

I refuse to talk about DVD when all people do is defend him, he did nothing last year. and if he was “close” to mkaing plays means nothing. Execution. If he doesn’t know to look for the ball, then he doens’t have the instincts needed. maybe he learns? sure. but at this point I tab Chimdi Chewka as a starter and potentially Tracy Porter or another newbie in Oakland. Huff could have a shot, but truly, I think they should dump his contract. Branch good, but not great. I think Allen will work a lot with Branch to get him to be great next year.

  53. DennisAllensVisor Says:

He was a 3rd round pick.

    Wow.

  54. DennisAllensVisor Says:

    DVD that is.

  55. YoungAmerican Says:

If your QB isn’t capable of putting the team on his back and winning games almost single-handedly, your team will not win important games.

Need a real skill set for that to be possible. You can run all day long, but if a good opposing offense turns the game into a shootout then you need to keep up. Bootlegs and option runs won’t get that done.

Jeez dude, DVD really wasn’t in the mix. He had a couple of guys in front of him and then got hurt. But when he was in there, he showed he could at least cover receivers. Was he Dick “night train” Lane his lst season? No, but showed he can probably play in this league.

  60. Hardline Says:

It’s better to be lucky than anything else. Nnamdi is a monkey sitting on the shoulders of King Kong. Nnamdi was inexplicably and mythically defined as the “shutdown corner” of the league, mainly through the blogosphere and bloggers who knew little if anything.

Lester Hayes had 39 INT’s in 8 seasons with the Raiders while Nnamdi had 11. When Nnamdi received a king’s ransom last season from the Eagles he had 3 INT’s.

Good linebackers normally produce that many.

  61. Hardline Says:

The problem with the Raider’s D is that there are no playmakers. Talent is mediocre, most on the roster being hired by AL, inspired by dementia and unreasonableness.

They, with several exceptions, should all be cut.

  62. M Lonetree Says:

one can only hope that all the non-re-tread coaches being hired on defense will be able to get the front 7 playing legitimate and above average alignments whether they are 4-3, 3-4 or anything else.

the days of playing 4-2.75 or 3-3.75 (RoMac, like Capt Kirk and Napoleon before him usually performs at a level of 3/4 of a good ILB) have to be over no?

  63. Hardline Says:

The problem with the CB’s is that they can’t make plays. Sometimes they can run alongside an opponent receiver, but once the ball comes, they don’t even read the body language of the receiver and raise their hand.

    ==========================================

It’s because Al was all about drafting athletes. If the athletes were natural football players, so much the better, but if it came down to choosing between an athlete with no football smarts and a great football player whose “measurables” didn’t stack up, guess who he’d go with, EVERY TIME?

This how we ended with a teamful of fast, strong, athletic stiffs.

  65. Hardline Says:

Chekwa and DVD could run alongside opponent receivers, at least keep up with them going down field, but never turned their heads once as the ball came near. This, according to many, showed these two crummy players at least had “potential” to play in the NFL.

To add injury to insult, both got hurt early on and never player thereafter.

Egads, man……how did it come to this ?

    =======================================

Thanks! I’ve often thought that he’ll be remembered a lot like Muhammad Ali: Any serious discussion of Ali’s career includes the humiliating last half-decade of his career when he was losing to guys (Leon Spinks, Trevor Berbick) he would have annihilated a few years before.

Similarly, Al will be remembered as someone who came to represent everything he had loathed: the “old boys” network, where players and coaches had to fit a certain mold or be cast aside, no matter how good they were otherwise.

I believe Nnamdi was an adequate CB, not terrible, but certainly no “shut down” corner. Nnamdi was very lucky in that he became a legend on an irrational basis. That happens sometimes, in life generally, with no justification whatsoever based on performance. Look at Barry Manilow for instance: based on industry standards he is considered great, when we all know he is a total light weight.

Teams wouldn’t throw Nnamdi’s way because the other corner inevitably was horrible. So why not go for the sure fire completion?? I’ll say one thing for Nnamdi; at least he would put up his hand when the ball came near.

Nowadays it doesn’t pay to invest too heavily in CBs. If sterling moore can start in the superbowl, then I would not worry too much about the secondary.

I guess the new rule changes have made it hard for DBs to thrive. Too much “touching the helpless receiver” calls. Recall that call against Curry for tackling a 250lb Tight End in minnisota? A Tight End for Christ sake.

Not to mention the new QB protection penalties. “touching the Quarterback on the head.” Recall the Buffalo game Moss nicked that fitzpatrick punk’s helemet, BOOM, flag.

Raidertalk, AL D. Davis was banned by Corky, and is no more.

Also, I long for the days of yore when QB headslaps and intentional infliction of concussions were a good thing.

Well, those days are gone, and so is a lot of brain damage.
    ===================================================
They sure make enough money not to be treated like punters. That “headslap” looked more like Moss was trying to tackle fitzpatrick when he ducked and touched him alittle on the helemet. Didn’t even look like a good headslap.

  90. Hardline Says:

    Raidertalk #83,

Good point Raidertalk. That really cracked me up. Javon Walker makes a huge money agreement with Big AL, then goes immediately to Vegas to celebrate, where he is filmed by papparazzi squirting multiple bottles of Dom with his shirt off. Thereinafter, he is followed to his hotel by several crooks who knock him over the head and relieve him of his wallet and jewelry.

Subsequently, Javon goes to AL and offers to void the contract and return $20M, an offer AL turns down, after which AL and Ed Herrera, talk and talk and talk to Walker and finally convince him to stay the course.

Meanwhile it is discovered that Walker concealed the fact that his knee needed more surgery, which was later performed, necessitating that he (Javon)sit out most of the season.

How is that for good management skills ???

Because this model (GM with absolute control, coach with his full support picking his own staff and schemes) is proven to work, time and time again.

We easily could have been 10-6.. if it weren’t for some bonegeaded play by the defense.. now it seems like Were starting over…I think its going to be very difficult to improve over last season…and I’m not impressed by our new coaching staff.. to me it looks average at best.

I think based on the clean-slate we have now, we have a real chance to improve on 8-8. Remember if our Defense was just able to make a couple more stops–not even a great improvement–we can get to maybe 10, 11 wins.

I think most of the negativity about this staff stems from the fact that Knapp is our OC. People think that Allen doesn’t know anything about offense. Jason Tarver didn’t study for biochemistry tests in college. That would have made them too easy.

Instead, Tarver went into tests and figured out the problems as they came. That made it more challenging – and more fun.

Tarver loves problem solving. It is part of what makes the 49ers outside linebackers coach so good at what he does. He enjoys analyzing opponents, then figuring out how to stop them.

Now entering his tenth season with the 49ers, Tarver has solved countless problems, and for him, that’s the best part of the job.

“I like figuring out what the problems are and how to attack things and how to fix things,” he said. “That’s what drew me to coaching.”

But, if Tarver wasn’t coaching, he could probably be doing anything he wanted.

Bill Walsh knew it the first time he met Tarver. When Tarver interviewed for a coaching position with the 49ers in 2001, Walsh asked the then 26-year-old why a man with a masters degrees in biochemistry and microbiology would want to coach football.

For Tarver, the answer was simple.

“I just knew this was what I wanted to do, and I told him that,” Tarver said. “There’s nothing else like coaching, and it is truly what I love doing.”

  107. alex7 Says:

    Twocents,

that’s probably what the Eagles thought when they allowed their O-line coach to coach the defense.

    Hold on…Wait a minute now….

I thought the salary cap was a ‘myth’.

Didn’t I just read a post by Jerry titled “Get ready for the myth of the salary cap” ?

So why is Jerry tweeting about a myth ?

The reason is the cap ISN’T a myth.

And despite what Jerry and Tim Brown believe, it most certainly does play a role in shaping a club’s roster.

The ‘mythical’ cap is indeed an important factor in determining which players a team can retain or acquire.

If the cap, as Jerry maintains, is just a myth – then why is he (and Steve) bothering to talk about cuts or restructures that will likely occur because of it ?

Sure, there’s ways to work the cap – but to proclaim the cap is a ‘myth’ and think it has no bearing on shaping what personnel a team brings to battle each season is flat out WRONG.

  162. da trinity Says:

I am an optimist, I believe that RM and DA will bring the raiders back to respectability.
    Here is my reasoning:

    1. We were the most penalized team in the history of the NFL last year, and we still almost made the playoffs. Our penaltys took away big runs, Td’s, big catches, took us out of fg range, made us settle for Fg. On D, penalty’s kept us on the field when we stoped the opponents, continuely gave opponents extra plays and also swung momentum in our opponents favor.
I believe Coach Allen will not allow players on the field who continue to be repeat offenders. Reggie will not draft players who have the penalty virus. This will help us a lot because we would no longer beat ourselves.

    2. Carson Palmer gets a full offseason with the Raiders. Carson did some good things last year. He made throws I haven’t seen a Qb make in a raiders uniform in a long time. He did throw to many picks but can u blame him. The dude was on the coach till almost midseason, signed then told he wouldn’t play the in the up coming game, then asked to play in the game not knowing the play book. For the retards outhere (Mistic) the guy was thrown in the fire and throw 6 pics in 2 games, what do u expect. He not going to preform like brees, Rogers, Brady, those guys have been in there systems for years. Carson 2 weeks. I give him a pass in Green bay, because he was just forcing balls because we were on the wrong side of a laugher. So I believe he will step up big this season, with some young studs on the o line, hopefully a healthy Dmc, Moore, Ford, Reece, and the ever growing DHBeast, our O seems set. Aside from Knapp who I don’t like but will give a chance because I don’t think he has had weapons like ours, our future is bright on Offense because of oh young talent.

    2. The D can’t help but get better right? We have a Defense minded Head coach, our GM played defense so I know they will see to it that we have a strong unit. I believe we do have talent on D. Add a couple players along with some good coaching, we can see a big improvement. Oh D looked dominant at times last year, but second half adjustments killed us. Allen will fix that, he helped the donkeys, he will do the same for us.

The future is bright even with new leadership.A lot of teams get new GMs and still suck, but its usually because the team is in mess when they get there. Our former GM was not fired he died. Our new leadership is taking over a team with talent and young talent at that. Raider Nation, I know we have been through some tuff years and that alone will breed skepticism, but we are experiencing something new, enjoy it. Were heading back to finally being players for winning the west, and our main goal, The Superbowl.

    1. We were the most penalized team in the history of the NFL last year, and we still almost made the playoffs.

Penalties REALLY hurt this team. Remember the fake FG in KC that would have ended that game and ended THEIR season? I think a lot of that is coaching and I think we should all be very excited about the direction this coaching staff and front office is taking.

    2. Carson Palmer gets a full offseason with the Raiders.

I was in the extreme minority but I thought our offense was not very good last year. We were terrible in the red zone, we were terrible in 2nd halves of games, we were dismal at the end of games. That can only improve.

    2. The D can’t help but get better right?

It could get worse theoretically. But if you put me in there coaching the D it would probably improve. Putting the guys in there they have, looks very very promising.

Method, I am glad you feel like me. I was so upset at Hue the Pimpin Magnificent, I could barely think straight. Most posters, at least until they perceived reality, thought HueJack was the cat’s meow. How could any coach cut an excellent possession receiver like Hagan in favor of Housh ?? How could any coach allow McClain to get away with his gunplay hijinks in AL with no repurcussions ?

Then we go to play calling, game management, clock, time out and score management: a child could have done better than HueJack. Actually we did have a good offense, but it was amorphous, just gooping around like a jellyfish, with no good direction.

I write off HueJack’s hiring as the effect of Al’s dimentia in his old age.

Now, I have forgotten HueJack and look forward to next season.

  179. Ex-Raider Routt visits Bills, with at least five others interested Says:

As expected, free-agent cornerback Stanford Routt paid a visit to the Buffalo Bills on Monday, following his release last week by the Oakland Raiders.

The Bills’ website reported the visit. Routt, 28, was scheduled for a physical Monday before meeting with the coaching staff.

NFL Network insider Jason La Canfora reported last week that Routt had visits scheduled with the Bills and Tennessee Titans. Routt will visit the Kansas City Chiefs on Tuesday and also has meetings scheduled with the Houston Texans and Dallas Cowboys, league sources told La Canfora on Tuesday.

Routt’s agent, Vann McElroy, told ESPN Dallas last week that the Cowboys, Chiefs and Minnesota Vikings had shown interest in his client.

Routt told Buffalo-area reporters Monday that he didn’t have a timetable to make a decision on his next team.

“I guess the beauty of this situation, for me, is it happened so early,” Routt said of his release from the Raiders.

Routt was released only one year into a restructured five-year, $54.5 million contract by the Raiders, who were $8.8 million over the salary cap before the move, according to NFL.com research.

    http://www.nfl.com/news/story/09000d5d826e9c74/article/exit-interview-raiders-must-address-woeful-d-injury-issues?module=HP11_content_stream

2011 in a Nutshell: Remember Star Trek, and how all the actors pretty much never worked other than on Star Trek? They were all buried in a role. That is exactly where the Raiders are: buried in a role. A role that consists of changing head coaches and racking up penalties like it’s nobody’s business. This has been going on for years, with 2011’s 8-8 Oakland team just the latest installment.

What went Right: A lot, actually. We finally saw some potential out of Darrius Heyward-Bey, and Denarius Moore has the makings of a big-time vertical threat. He singlehandedly destroyed the Chargers on “Thursday Night Football.” Michael Bush served notice in that same game that he’s nobody’s backup. No. 29 ran hard in 2011. He is set to become a free agent, but there are reports that Oakland will make re-signing Bush a priority. In general, special teams should be more of a priority around the NFL, but in Oakland, they’re a luxury. Simply put, the only kicker-punter tandem as good as the one the Raiders have resides across the Bay in San Francisco. Sebastian Janikowski went 31 for 35 on field goals, scoring 129 points. Three of those misses were from 50-plus yards. Punter Shane Lechler continues to be among the best ever at his position, averaging over 50 yards per punt and dropping 27 inside his opponents’ 20-yard line. Darren McFadden has the explosiveness to be a modern-day Eric Dickerson. Through seven games he tallied over 100 scrimmage yards per game. He really could be the centerpiece for this franchise …

What Went Not So Right: …if, that is, McFadden can stay healthy. Isn’t that always the question with him? The guy averaged 5.4 yards per carry — that’s no joke. But sometimes a player’s best ability is availability, and McFadden has not been available for a good portion of his career. Carson Palmer was acquired via trade last season in one of the overrated dramas in recent memory. Palmer is still a middle-of-the-pack quarterback, as reflected by the 16 costly interceptions he tossed in half a season. The offense was ninth in the NFL overall, but when the Raiders really needed both Palmer and the defense to play big, they didn’t — particularly at home in Week 17 with the division on the line.

There were times the defense couldn’t play big or small. The front seven did not play well against the run, as in a midseason home loss to the Broncos. Moreover, the secondary was beaten for big plays often last year, with and without starter Chris Johnson, who was hurt early. Stanford Routt was up and down, and is now gone. Losing Matt Shaughnessy to injury deprived the back four of its best friend: a front four that gets pressure. Shaughnessy’s absence was a painful one.

Offseason Crystal Ball: Dennis Allen is the Raiders’ first head coaching hire from the defensive side of the ball since John Madden replaced John Rauch in 1969. He’ll have his work cut out for him this offseason, but he did a solid job with the Broncos’ defense last season.

How can this team afford to pay Bush what he’ll be able to draw on the market when he’s slotted to be a backup behind McFadden? He’ll have a chance to go elsewhere and be the guy. But therein lies the rub, because the current Man in Oakland seems to be more of a Tin Man. Let’s shoot straight here: McFadden can’t stay healthy. It’s a problem, one that might necessitate a trade, especially if Taiwan Jones has more than just potential. Is free-agent-to-be Jason Campbell going to part ways with the Silver and Black? Other major potential free agents to contend with for newly minted general manager Reggie McKenzie are safety Tyvon Branch and right tackle Khalif Barnes.

Is this the point of the article where we should mention an NFL-record 163 penalties? Correcting that unholy stat might be the story of the offseason for the Oakland Raiders.

Team Needs and Draft: Cornerback is certainly a need. Finding outside linebacker, middle linebacker and defensive line help wouldn’t hurt. Aaron Curry is not a big-time player at one of the outside slots, and Richard Seymour ain’t getting any younger on the front line — believe it or not, he’ll be entering his 12th season in 2012.

    ——–

Another terrible Al Davis deal …. one of the many leftover in the dirty diaper he left McKenizie.

    Routt was another.
    Seymour another.
    Huff is another.

hmmm alll theses guys played on one of the worst defenses in the NFL last year.

    I want boar hunters.
    ———————————
As the 2000 decade progressed and the team played worse and worse AD felt he could stop the bleeding by hiring FAs. Problem was nobody wanted to come here so he felt he had to overpay to get them to come. In the 80s and 90s he’d never do that. These bad contracts are sign of AD’s desperation to see this team go to super bowl before his time was up.
And now team is straddled w those bad deals.

I applaud Reggie for cutting Rout who was obviously given a choice to restructure but he chose not to and hence leaving the team w no choice.
Now I think Wimbley will restructure like Seymour to stay put.

  227. Random Drug Tester Says:

regarding earlier posts about the DBs, I have 1 thing to say…

With today’s rules, DBs need to have 2 abilities:

    1) tackle anybody, anywhere, all the time…after the catch.
    2) jump a pattern and intercept without having to touch or mug the receiver because the rules don’t let you touch or hit the receiver until he has finished trying to catch the ball.

that’s the way it is now…intercept if you can, if not, wait until the receiver has tried to receive it, and then tackle him with no more yardage gained or it’s gonna be a flag on the DB.

  228. Master Beeecham Says:

Peemore Bust, I know you pitch a tent every time Plunk posts a hilarious video link.

KEEPIN MAD FLOW PERCOLATING IN THE MDR

  229. Random Drug Tester Says:

my 2nd thing to say is…

your defensive scheme should allow a “good” DB to jump patterns because he will know that he will be backed up because his team is playing an “attack” defense which allow a lot “Yards against” but with repeated efforts by “good and smart” DBs they will eventually create a turnover and have a lower “Points against” ranking!

That my Raider friends is the “new” NFL…DB’s are king just like big Al always knew…just need different skill sets.

I wish Routt the best, but I seriously think he’ll be a one-and-done with whoever signs him (or a one-and-benched-for-a-season-until-the-cap-hit-from-cutting-him-lessens). The biggest reason is that he doesn’t know anything as a pro other than the Al Davis man-to-man, which nobody in the NFL plays full time anymore (not even us, now). Look at the way Nnamdi struggled, and Routt is not as good as Nnamdi.

thirdly…I think Dennis Allen knows this and that is why Routt is gone along with 10 million other reasons.

    ============================================

I think DBs need to gamble a bit more on turnovers; rules allow for recievers to just run around as if it were flag football intramural game on an Air Force base.

    Retribution,

Your idea is good except the opponent receivers are either wide open, or our CB’s never even turn their head and stick their hand up to knock down the ball and break up the play. It’s so ridiculous that almost every pass is completed. Rout was so bad he just held the receiver hoping he wouldn’t be called for interference.

Some here will claim Nnamdi was the “shut down” corner. But if you compare Nnamdi’s stats against Darrell Reavis’ stats, Reavis, having been in the league 4 yrs, leads Nnamdi, who has been in the league 9 yrs, almost 2 to 1, including passes defensed, tackles, INT’s, yardage on run-backs, forced fumbles, etc.

There is a disconnect with the Raiders. Their CBs just can’t play. Nnamdi is average at best. Matt Giordano has 8 interceptions, same as Nnamdi had at the end of last season. Nnamdi picked up 3 more for the Eagles, but so what ?

So many here want to believe the discredited myth that Nnamdi is great, but he is just not. I really don’t care what his peers and sport writers say, they are just flat out wrong. Until someone can come up with a different set of stats on Nnamdi, all those commentators are discredited in my opinion.

For some reason, the Raiders CB’s just can’t play.

  245. RaiderSam Says:

Would rather find an FA who is a proven commodity when it comes to putting the QB on the ground, and then get some low-cost FAs in the secondary and depth guys at LB.

    DE – Williams or Avril
    DB – Marshall or Porter
    LB – Woodyard and/or Ruud

It remains to be seen how much money the Raiders will have to throw around in free agency, though.

    ==========================
They could sign all of them.
Woodyard, Ruud, Avril and Porter wouldn’t cost nearly as much

as just Williams by himself – he’ll be in the 7-9 million range per year, and that would be still be less than Seymour will make this year. – crazy, huh?

Ruud was one of the last LB’s signed..he didn’t get any play in FA – the Cardinals signed the Niners Stewart Bradley (10 mil signing bonus on a 25 mil. deal)

Denver will make every effort to sign Woodyard.

One guy the Raiders could look at is Jo-Lonn Dunbar , he played well in replacing Jonathan Vilma for a stretch – and would be very cost effective, unless the light goes on for McClain, and he rips it up.

My guess is they will have to dangle McFadden, Louis Murphy and even Michael Mitchell to get a shot at 16th overall, 111 and 140 – adding 3 picks to the existing 3 or 4 we already have, assuming we get the compensatory pick for Robert Gallery.

not to say the Jets would want – Darren McFadden, but lets speculate

16th overall – could be a big corner – Dre Kirkpatrick (replacing Routt, with a FA or Chekwa on the otherside)

97th (Asomugha compensatory) could be Brandon Thompson DT, Clemson (helping the age factor with Kelly/Seymour upfront)

111th (say from Chicago) – Donte Paige-Moss, DE, or Brandon Lindsay or RT Levy Adcock

140th – Emanuel Acho, ILB, Texas or Derek Wolfe, DE, Cincinnati

178th – Adrian Robinson, OLB, Temple or Gerrell Robinson, WR, Arizona St.

Woodyard, Ruud, Porter and Avril would round out a successful offseason nicely.

*i predicate the McFadden to the Jets scenario only because Rex would run his big mouth thinking he’s only one player away, and nobody is as explosive is McFadden in this draft (Trent Richardson is already touted as the next Adrian Peterson, and he wont get out of the top 10, and the tackles worth taking-Jets real need will already have been taken)

    Eugene: $2
    Curry: $5.7

    Huff: $4 + $4 (bonus)

Allen, Tarver and Terrell Williams all have experience coaching the 3-4. While everyone shows it some of the time, I have a feeling we’ll be showing it more in the future than we have been. I predict a nose tackle in there someplace, whether through the draft or through free agency, and the better value could be via the draft.

Routt’s salary comes OFF the cap, but Al gave him some huge signing bonus which, instead of being spread out over the 5 years, now counts against the cap immediately. The end result is a slight cap hit for this year, but we’re good after that.

Philly ran into an even worse situation with Terrell Owens a few years back, except that his bonus was so huge that when he started pulling a major attitude in training camp his second year, they literally COULDN’T cut or trade him because his accelerated bonus would have put them way over the cap.

Routt says he likes the atmosphere in Buffalo

    Posted by Mike Florio (PFT)

Getty ImagesFree-agent cornerback Stanford Routt, who made $15 million for one season in Oakland, has commenced his quest for a new team. On Monday, he visited the Bills.

“Today was a good day,” Routt said in comments to reporters, the video of which are posted on the Bills’ website. “I like the atmosphere around here.”

He wasn’t interested in talking about his time in Oakland, calling it a “past chapter.” And he has specific goals for the next chapter.

“I want to go to a team that I can help win,” Routt said. “I haven’t won much in my seven years in the NFL. And I just want to be on a team that’s winning, that I can help win, and have some stability.”

Routt got a head start on free agency because his contract contained a clause that would have fully guaranteed his $5 million base salary if he was still on the roster on Friday. With a full month before the other cornerbacks can hit the market, Routt has plenty of time to make a decision.

Next up for Routt, according to Jason La Canfora of NFL Network, is a visit to the Chiefs on Tuesday and, later in the week, the Texans, Cowboys, and Titans

It’s strange that Buffalo is interested in Routt when they already have McKlevin, Florence & rookie Aaron Williams.
    *******************
Aaron Williams showed promise, but both Drayton Florence and Leodis McKelvin regressed badly as the year went on. Neither is better in pure man2man than Routt is especially if they can sign him for less than 5 mill a year.

  279. Carl Weathers Says:

Free agents I predict we go after

Dan Connor~ could push McClain, start @ ILB in 3-4 or play OLB in 4-3

Tracy Porter~ played very well with allen as his coach

    Richard Marshall~ solid #2 corner

    Jim Leohnard~(if Huff is dumped)

Woodyard~ played well under Allen last year

    Paul Soliai~ 3-4 NT or 4-3 DT

Offense I haven’t had a chance to llok at yet…

  280. Carl Weathers Says:

Bcz24, is Routt really an upgrade over McK or Florence? I guess the Bills think so. If they were to cut either of those guys I wouldn’t mind if we picked them up to compete for a job.

  281. hwnrdr Says:

What was Leohnard’s injury last year?

  282. bcz24 Says:

Drayton Florence is already 31 years old… he has reached his potential. He is a depth guy, maybe a dime? Not much more than that. Leodis McKelvin, outside of his explosiveness in the return game, has been a major disappointment for the Bills at CB. Either of those guys would have a very difficult time beating out a healthy CJ37 IMO. Id rather roll with Chewy and DVD, as at least they are young and have potential.

  286. bcz24 Says:

Routt is good in coverage, he could improve on his numbers by being more disciplined, and with some coaching, learning to more effectively read receivers to adjust to the ball in flight… one of the things I am starting to feel about Routt is that he doesn’t believe he needs to improve, he thinks he is fine, doesn’t own up to the penalties and TDs allowed as being his problem. That kind of attitude will never allow him to grow.

I haven’t been logged in a while, but have been following you guys. You semi’s are doing some great work here and I love some of the suggestions.

I have a lot of faith that the new coaching staff is going to get this turned around quickly. Maybe not the one year turnaround that happened over in SF. We don’t have the core talent that they had on defense.

But the attitude adjustment that coach Allen will bring is nothing but positive stuff. There will be a learning curve, and some bumps in the road. But we finally will be rid of that old dysfunctional AD scheme and idiot DC’s who are nothing but puppets.

Glad to see the scholarships go, and whoever is left must pull their own weight.

We have a ton of coaches who don’t really fit but are going to try to prove themselves. Some will stick, but expect others to fail.

It’s going to be worse before it gets better. No more dictatorship rule of Hue that impeded progress to the next level. I really think he took us about as far as he could. The lack of discipline was a glaring sore spot that coach Allen will correct.

The cap situation will shake itself out, and we will lose guys like big John, Huffy, and even RoMac if he can’t get his head on right. I don’t see us as big spenders at all in free agency. We are hamstrung and will try to get value from our weak assortment of draft picks. In McKenzie I trust.

  314. bcz24 Says:

There will be value free agent signings. No, we arent going to sign Mario Williams, but there will be some signings happening. Particularly in the secondary. We need a vet CB to replace Routt. May not be a Cortland Finnegan, but we will sign one or maybe even two.

  317. guest123 Says:

I am hoping that the new defensive coaches/philosphy will bring a scheme that masks our personnel’s weaknesses. The previous scheme only served to expose them. It was easy to gameplan against us and find that weakness.

True, it won’t require the atheletes S/W/L that AD wanted so badly. But we aren’t reliant on big money contracts anymore. You get more interchangable pieces that you can let walk and hire a replacement for cheap.

They need to pour the money into the DL. Get pressure upfront on the QB, and scheme to homogenize the talent accross the secondary and LB’s. Eliminate the weak links, and put the game in the hands of the DL’s as playmakers that force the play or force bad throws.

DVD and Chekwa are going to be fine. We could stand to use another vet CB or 2 on the cheap. CJ’s days as a starter are done.

    G123,

I agree with you.. in pricipal

However – the big money contracts are ALREADY in the defensive front seven

Who is overpaid in the secondary? just Huff?

Look at the contracts of Seymour, Kelly, Henderson, McClain, Curry & Wimbley bro!

Houston, ShoNasty, Bryant & Moss are the only guys playing at a reasonable rate imo

I would still take any 2 of those other 4 guys you listed over Seymour & Kelly if money isn’t an issue as Jerry Mac so ignorantly proclaims.

I want 2 fat pigs in the middle at all times. Then one hard hitting make you p1ss your pants snot bubble causing freak at MLB. Seymour, like it or not is a Raider next year. He’s terribly overpaid, but there’s nothing that McKenzie can do but pay him his extra $7.5M to finish his deal. But he’ll be $15M off the books next year. Think long term.

Kelly at $6M is as good as gone. No way he comes back at that rate. If they do go to a 3-4, he’s a liability even. I think he’s gone.

Henderson is gone, too bad his health is so degenerative, but even if he plays well when he plays, it’s too much to pay for a 20 snap guy. Adios amigo.

McClain, he’ll stay if he learns the discipline and respect that Allen will insist of him. If not, he could be made the poster boy of bad apples that could be cut and contract swallowed. Just to send a message. I hope that McClain falls in line.

Curry, he’s good as gone at his current salary. If he wants to compete for a spot on the cheap, fine. But no great loss there and he wasn’t expensive to acquire anyway.

Wimbley, too much money guaranteed to cut him loose now. Can’t do anything but suck it up and pay the man.

    Good morning AM crew.

According to an NFL News article:”Routt was released only one year into a restructured five-year, $54.5 million contract by the Raiders, who were $8.8 million over the salary cap before the move, according to NFL.com research”.

If we were $8.8 million over the cap before we released Routt, he was due $10 million in salary, so doesn’t that mean we are $1.2 million under the cap now?

    Another question:
If we are $1.2 million under the cap (assuming the article and my calculations are correct), we didn’t restructure any contracts like Wimbley’s/ Curry/ Seymour/ TK/ etc (as far as we know), so doesn’t that mean we are in good shape for FA?
    Henderson: $4 million
    Eugene: $2
    Curry: $5.7
    TK: $6
    Huff: $4 + $4 (bonus)
    CJ: $3.6 (I’m not sure)
    Seymour: $7.5 + $7.5 (bonus)

If we cut Henderson, Eugene, and restructure with Curry, we can save $10 million.

  337. Marks hair Says:

Are there any cheaper options at DT? Cheap but solid? Kelly and Seymour are both penetrators, we need an anchor.

  338. Raider O Says:

Cut Henderson/ Eugene/ CJ, and restructure with Huff/ Curry/ and Seymour.
That should save us $10-15 million.

    Sign Mario Williams!

  339. Marks hair Says:

Raier O, yeah we’re in pretty good shape with the cap.. Al spent alt but he always left backdoors on his contracts.. We always find money if we like a guy. We just need to choose wisely, and stop offering record setting deals so we can carry better depth.

  340. Raider O Says:

    FA Wish list:
    1- Mario Williams
    2- Carr/ Finnegan/ Porter
    3- Resign Branch
    4- Tolbert/ Hillis
    5- V Jackson

  341. guest123 Says:

Forget about being over the cap. I think Mark Davis wants to eventually get us to be one of the teams way under the cap. This whole team moving thing is a smokescreen I don’t see happening, but there’s enough sabrerattling to see that economic cutbacks are coming. I think McKenzie’s going to do some headscratching cuts and a lot of people are gonna be pissed. Raiders just became a business venture.

  347. Raider O Says:

    Bcz,

Mario will demand $10-15 million in annual salary. Nnamdi made 16-18 million his last year here. He was paid over market value, and so was Mario last season.

  348. Marks hair Says:

I think we’ll get a stadium soon enough. The the raiders are a premere franchise, the nfl might help us out or the A’s will move and Oakland will get desperate to keep the Raiders..

    Agreed!

I am willing to accept that it COULD get worse before it gets better in lieu of long term, sustained success.

But…I know I’m being optimistic, but I don’t think that has to be the case for this coming yr.

    Here’s why:

-Our D was the WORST since the 1952 Dallas Texans. With a new DC and new “attitude” the D will play with more discipline. I think it will be improved immediately. Maybe not by leaps and bounds but better than giving up 4,000 yds. passing and 2,000 yds. rushing, which is historically bad.

How can it get any worse? I mean really.

-The offense will basically be the same. Not much change EXCEPT it will probably get better.

Who can disagree that Palmer is gonna get better by coming off a full offseason of practice and working with receivers as opposed to coming off the couch?

All the above and STILL managed 8-8 with a tuff schedule.

    To sum:

-Defense better (Can’t get worse can it?)

    -Offense same or better.

    -Better coaching

Unreasonable based on the above we won’t actually be better?

It seems logical unless…they start dumping our good offensive guys to make the D better. If that’s the case then I can see where we would most likely take steps back.

    G123,

I couldn’t agree more. I think Mark loved and respected his dad, but understands that he set this franchise WAY back by the way he did things in his later years

I think we’ll start paying decent money in order to get quality coaches in here. Then we’ll pay competitive prices for players that the other teams would consider paying. no more scholarships. no more breaking the bank for average players to come here. no more mortgaging the future to “win now” every year. no more height/weight/speed guys that aren’t football players. no more choosing potential over production. we are going to develop players. we are going to develop coaches. we are going to promote from within

It’s going to take some time, but we’ll get there. I think it’s a 3 year plan and Reggie Mac was given a 5 year deal … so thats fair imo

It looks like last year’s fierce all-in strategy in retrospect backfired on us and we’ll end up paying the piper for a few years to get all the dead money and lost draft picks out of our system. Hope we can all have patience. I know it’s tough to tighten the belt and watch the losses pile up. It’s going to test Mark Davis’s resolve to stand by McKenzie through all the changes.

I just don’t see us throwing around big money to get guys to play here. those days are over. with hardly any draft picks and so many of our own free agents, you can bet we’ll be signing players from other teams. I don’t think we’re gonna grab a free agent (our own or somebody elses) and pay him like a Top 10 player at his position

if Reggie Mac is an excellent talent evaluater, like his reputation states … we should be able to make more with less

with legit coaching and discipline alone, plus an entire offseason to make changes and get healthy?

the Raiders are 12-4 next season. I predict we will not only win, but OWN the afc west

The unique situation here is Mark has said we don’t have a lot of time to make some big decisions.

    G123,

this is where we disagree. you don’t need a roster full of big names to win games. you just need to get players that fit your system and have them execute the gameplan. I don’t expect to finish worse than 8-8 next season, regardless if we lose a few guys from our defensive front seven. How much worse can the run defense get? is ROMAC going to regress or get into more legal trouble? are Seymour & Kelly gonna start taking MORE plays off? is Tarver gonna be worse than Chuck B?

Agreed. And it will take at least two years, probably more like three.

The good news is that there is enough talent to be a .500 team, so with better coaching playoffs are a possibility even during the transitio

    BCZ & YA,

two of the Top 10 semi pros in here.

I don’t think we franchise Branch. He reminds me of Gibril Wilson. As soon as you franchise a player, their long term deal contract worth soars thru the roof! Sort of like Kam Wimbley.

you’re telling the player and his agent “we cant afford to lose you. you are among the best at your position”. They counter with “prove it. we’re open to a long term deal. show us the money”

Branch is known for his run support, but our run defense stinks. He was horrible in coverage in 2010, but improved a little in 2011. Still – we allowed 60 TD passes over the past 2 seasons and not all of those were against Huff & Routt. You know what i’m saying?

Scott Pioli went to the Chiefs in 2009.

He blew up the entire roster & coaching staff. gutted everything.

they won the division in Year #2 with far less talent than we have right now. What would have happened if Cassel, Charles & Berry were healthy this last year? 1 more win would have taken the division (again)

It can happen sooner than you think!

  385. bcz24 Says:

Branch is a fringe pro bowler at SS, he can cover if necessary, he is stout in run support, and he is a career Raider to this point. He seems happy there and can be a leader in the locker room and on the field if he buys into the new philosophy. You cant tell me you support our new coaching staff if you dont think they can coach up the players we have. I think under DA’s tutelage Branch will be in the pro bowl next year.

  386. RaiderRockstar Says:

Why do people like Branch so much?

because he has a lot of tackles?

what SS for the Raiders since 2003 hasn’t had a bunch of tackles? TB certainly isn’t a ballhawk.

is it because Hue Jackson talked him up?

is it because the media expects us to pay him a king’s ransom?

    somebody provide some clarity please.

he’s not going to be our primary return man next year.

  394. Dakota Says:

Branch is over-hyped and I have no idea where it is coming from. Can’t count the number of times in the last three years I have seen Branch near a play in the end zone looking confused as the WR catches a TD pass. Can’t always tell if it is the safeties coverage or the CB’s, but either way he hasn’t done much but be a part of one of the worst secondaries in the NFL.

Branch is a better tackler than Huff, but he isn’t a run stuffing SS by any means.

Offer the guy the average contract for the average SS, and if someone else signs him, then don’t even blink.

    ++++++++++++++++++++

Just because the guy might be the BEST OF THE WORST doesn’t mean we have to keep him. Certainly he is worth keeping at a reasonable price, but no way no how should the Raiders even consider franchising him, or overpaying him…

Same goes for Michael Bush for that matter.

  401. bcz24 Says:

4 passes defensed and 1 int last year. Not too bad for a strong safety.

He is a very good blitzer, when schemed properly (ie 2010… marshall was successful with blitzing branch, won us the first SD game)

He is also young and has a lot of room for upside, thats exactly the type of player reggie mckenzie covets.

  402. Raider O Says:

    RR,

Branch’s issue is coverage and not run support or tackling. I also thought he improved his coverage skills last year.
Is he worth 6+ million? No
Should we tag him? Only if we have to. He is the best S in FA.
How much should he make? $4 million range.

  403. RaiderRockstar Says:

I would rather see him franchised and then see if the new coaching staff can get anything out of him before signing him to a long-term deal.

We have so many needs on defense and really no viable way to fill those needs this offseason, so to open up yet another hole at SS would hurt.

If they can cut Michael Huff to open up cap room for improving our LBers and the NT position then I am all for keeping Branch with the franchise tag and just seeing what the new staff can make of him. Here’s a good one…..if you were to get a jersey for 2012, who would it be?

    Branch, Wiz, Veld, Houston, Ford….Moore?
    ==========

I was thinking maybe a Blackstock jersey, but he’ll probably be let go.

  444. bcz24 Says:

Rock you are stuck in the thinking that what happened here in the past has any bearing on the future. Disregard anything that happened prior to Jan 2, 2012 as if it were a different team. For all intents in purposes, it was.

  445. bank-bank Says:

I myself seen branch make tackles against the run. What are you watching. He shouldn’t be making those tackles anyway 10 yds down the field but,he does it all the time. The front line and the linebackers should handle that.If they get thru them then Branch is there 10 yds down the field to make that tackle to stop that run right there which he does.Give the guy a break.Plus,he plays the whole season which is more than I can say about you-know-who.

  446. r8eray Says:

DMAC funny ish you say that…..it never fails!!

    LOL

Woodson, Nnamdi, Russell (POS), and Moss are the last I bought…I’m sticking with throwbacks!!

Bo, Long, Plunk, Allen, Stabler, Biletnikoff, Lamonica, Brown, Otto and Branch…maybe a few I didnt mention!

  447. Raider O Says:

We should trade Palmer & DMAC, and let TP run the offense.
TP will throw for 4000+ yards, rush for a 1000 yards, and he will have 40-45 TDs.
    Best year ever.
    TP!!!!!

    +++++++++++++++

Is that where Troy P. makes tackles? 10 yards down the field?

    Bob Sanders in his day?

If Branch wants to be paid like those guys, then he needs to play as well as them don’t you think?

I was thinking of getting a Houston jersey myself, but you can’t go wrong w/ the D-Moe.

Profootballfocus.com rates branch as the 29th best available free agent in 2012 (not bad considering more than 25% of the NFL are free agents this year), and the #1 available safety in FA.

Good morning (afternoon) my Silver & Black brethren!!

I say bring back C. Woodson and Nnamdi so you can wear your jerseys again… Never shouldve gotten rid of those cats in the first place!!

I would rather tag him and eat the money than let him walk and roll with Mike Mitchell. (Who I believe may even struggle to make the squad this year…)

so you assume Reggie, Dennis & Jason can’t do better than Mike Mitchell if Branch isn’t retained?

I guess you really don’t trust them after all…

We don’t have the draft picks to waste replacing a guy who is fine.

I think of it like this, I have a fleet of cars and limited resources to maintain what I have and upgrade the fleet. All of my blue cars (my defense) under perform compared to industry standard, do I use my resources to replace the best of the underperformers, or upgrade from the bottom, and appropriate my resources to the bigger issues?

  466. bcz24 Says:

Comparing Branch to a Polamalu isnt really fair either, considering he Troy plays for arguably one of the best DCs ever, and has an outstanding supporting cast. Troy has the freedom to take big risks to make plays, because the other 10 guys on the field more often than not dont get beat. The scheme is also designed to have the safeties roaming around to make those plays, our scheme is not set up for that, nor are the rest of our supporting cast even close to that level of play.
