Raiders free agents quandary

By Steve Corkran
Thursday, February 16th, 2012 at 12:38 pm in Oakland Raiders.

The Raiders have a penchant for re-signing a majority of their prospective free agents. Doing so this season won’t be nearly as easy, given they have 22 such players, they are $11 million over the salary cap and there is a burning need to sign a few players in free agency.
Here is a breakdown of how new coach Dennis Allen and first-year general manager Reggie McKenzie figure to approach the daunting task of what to do with the long list:
Easy calls — Two of those names can be crossed off the list simply by offering restricted free agents Marcel Reece and Desmond Bryant one-year tenders. Both players are young, productive and won’t cost much.
The Raiders can let walk quarterbacks Jason Campbell and Kyle Boller, defensive end Trevor Scott, safety Jerome Boyd, cornerback Lito Sheppard, linebackers Ricky Brown, Quentin Groves and Darryl Blackstock and wide receivers T.J. Houshmandzadeh and Chaz Schilens.
They already have a starting quarterback in Carson Palmer and a No. 3 in Terrelle Pryor. Signing someone such as David Garrard would take care of the primary backup spot.
There is no burning need to bring back for any of the eight other veterans who are eligible to become free agents March 13.
Tough calls — Running back Michael Bush wants to be a starting running back. He realizes that isn’t apt to happen in Oakland as long as Darren McFadden is on the roster.
Therefore, Bush likely won’t be interested in a long-term contract. Given that, the Raiders have to decide whether they want to use the franchise tag on Bush, to the tune of $7.7 million or so for 2012.
McKenzie has a history of working for a team that finds unheralded running backs and develops them into productive players. He also has McFadden and Taiwan Jones on the roster.
That makes it unlikely that Bush will be franchise-tagged. If so, the only other player who might get that designation is strong safety Tyvon Branch.
It’s more likely that the Raiders will try to work out a long-term contract with Branch so that they can avoid committing a ton of money to Branch for 2012, when they need to use some of that money on other players.
Center Samson Satele was re-signed last year and started all season. It’s possible that the Raiders will switch second-year player Stefen Wisniewski from left guard to center and try someone else at guard. If not, look for Satele to be re-signed.
Toss-ups — Offensive linemen Stephon Heyer and Khalif Barnes, defensive end Jarvis Moss, safety Matt Giordano and running back Rock Cartwright played key roles last season.
Re-signing any of those players likely will depend upon their willingness to return at a modest price and whether they receive better offers elsewhere.
Once Allen and McKenzie sort out this mess, then they can turn their attention toward free agents from other teams.
As of now, the Raiders are in the market for a cornerback, wide receiver, linebacker and defensive lineman. Freeing up enough cap space will be key to placing the Raiders in a position to go after some of the top-tier players expected to hit the open market next month.
That process is underway right now. The Raiders can reach cap compliance by the March 13 deadline by cutting a few more players and/or restructuring wieghty contracts of players such as Palmer, linebacker Kamerion Wimbley, cornerback Chris Johnson, defensive tackles John Henderson and Tommy Kelly and free safety Michael Huff.
Here is the entire list of Oakland’s prospective free agents:

    I hear you.

Bush I think is a piece that can be replaced without a loss of production.

A healthy McFadden opens up the entire Offense.
    ——————————————-
Big if, bro. And, if he were to go sown, god forbid, were fked, without Bush.

I disagree, I don’t think he can be easily replaced. He’s going to go somewhere and start.
    —————————-
I like Mike Bush, and would love to have Him back, but not at Franchise Tag $$$.

McFadden is a Huge “if”, no doubt.

I guess it’s about priority and where $$$ is spent.

I think Bush’s production can be accounted for with less $$$.

I noticed you didn’t respond to the word that Pryor is following Palmer around, picking his mind.

  • Just Fire Baby

Now, what do you think about the word that Pryor, is following Palmer around, closely?

    ***********************

    I think it is great.

Palmer has a calmness to him, and has enough of a work ethic, that some wet-eared rookie could learn tons from.

I think Pryor, enjoys being “Terrell Pryor”, and will work to make sure he can keep up the life style. May not make a career out of it, but I will take a quality #2 for 3 years.

I do not understand y anyone thinks Pryor is going to be any good. I guess anything is possible but what has he done to make people believe he would be great? Won a Rose bowl? Also I hope the Raiders find a way to keep Bush and get rid of Khalif Barnes. Barnes is a penalty machine, he even finds a way to stand out on a team full of penalty makers.

Same reason no one thought Cam Newton would be good or Tim Tebow. They definitely will look at him in the pre-season. Why the hell not?
    —————————–

mechanics, not much of an arm, didn’t have great numbers in college. besides that the broncos won in spite of tebow. the wins were driven by the defense. cam newton, i never understood why people gave him such a hard time. the guy has a good arm, came just short of 3000 yards his senior yr, had 30 tds to 7 ints. I think the situation with pryor is completely different than the ones with tebow and newton.

    Brandon Underwood:

The case first came to our attention in June, with a report that six members of the Packers were being interviewed over a sexual assault claim by two women. The women were initially claiming that one Packers player raped them while other Packers players held them down.

That story later changed dramatically, to an allegation that Underwood brought the two women back to a cabin after meeting them at a strip club, and that he paid them for sex but threw them out of the cabin when he discovered them in the process of stealing from him.

i do get the tebow pryor comparisons, even thoguh pryor is a better runner and passer (not by much).

Only a fool would compare pryor or tebow to newton.

I think Cam is going to get a few prime time games this year.

You got to think, TV execs are drooling at getting Tebow vs. Newton on primetime TV.

Great storyline, and Tebow gets out of this world ratings.

  • JLofty

@108: I disagree, to open the season we had the least amount of sacks of any team in the league, DMcF was running amuck and I say the OLine was STOUT. Then when the wheels starting falling off, the line had some buckles but other than some Kaspleef Barnes penalties, overall our OL was not holding back our success….

  • Marks hair

I thought tps’ feet were alittle sloppy, well his form altogether was a bit sloppy. But I think he is a 1st rd talent and a great project. Id still like a solid vet going into camp though.. We cant just add a guy week 1 if tp looks like a junior during the peseason..

sad. If a regular joe public, can mack on chicks and get what he needs, why would an nfl player have to trick like that? You are in the nfl and the scales are tipped in your favor.

Off top when i was coming up as a youngster trickn was something for the lames to do. Only people with no game pay for play.

Now it has flipped 180 degrees, dudes brag about trickn and making it rain at strip clubs. What has happened to man hood in the hood?

I have no clue what you are talking about. I read this article from posted by the OAKLAND TRIBUNE TODAY (scroll up idiot) and they mentioned david garrard as a possibility. I DID NOT WRITE THE ARTICLE. I only agreed that garrard would be a good pick up.

Pleas explain how my agreement with the writer of this article constitutes racism.

Please tell me why in your mind race is an issue with qbs? I know you dont look for skin color when discussing any other position so why qb?

I cant help if a good qb is mentioned by a sport writer in a major paper, and he happens top be black.

    What a clown

  • Just Fire Baby

Quality P ain’t free, whether it is time, energy, effort, or whatever it is your paying.

Some dudes don’t have the time for all that, and can’t be seen out with other chicks.

So, rather than “hunt” for the chick that is a willing participant under these conditions, you can get your lackey to round a handful of ones who are “willing” for about a days pay (or for NFL guys, an hour or two).

  • DT42

Let Bush go and lets see what Reece can do at TB in a ZBS scheme. Schilens will be the one player that we let go that will come back to haunt this team if he ever can stay healthy. I hope that Knapp learned what HuJax learned with McFadden and keep the plays that make him a top 5 RB when healthy. Outside of Bryant I think that everyone else on that list has the potential to be gone.

C’Mon if someone said this a year ago about JC you would have been angry. Palmer is on notice and everyone agrees he has to prove himself. You could have said “if” instead of “when.”

You called a lot of people out who constantly blasted JC before the 2011 season and rightfully so b/c he was our QB and it was not going to change.

Terrell Pryor in his last season (2010) at Ohio State completed 65.0% of his passes gaining 2772 yards through the air.

On the other hand Cam Newton completed 66.1% of his passes gaining 2854 yards through the air.

    Both QBs had similiar low INT/TD ratios Newton being 30 TDs / 7 INT’s; Pryor’s being 27 TDs / 11 Int’s.

Newton gained 1515 rushing yards at 5.7 yds per attempt while scoring 21 TDs.

Pryor gained 773 rushing yards at 5.6 yds per attempt with 5 TDs.

Both QB’s had checkered collegiate histories with Newton attending Florida, sitting out his first season with an ankle injury, then being expelled from the team after being arrested for stealing a laptop computer, after which he transferred to Auburn. Newton’s stats described above came almost exclusively from his stint at Auburn for a single season.

Pryor, of course was guilty of committing NCAA violations and because he would have been suspended opted out for the supplemental draft. Pryor’s development during his first two season at Ohio State is obvious, leading to a superlative 3rd season.

Why so many Posters here claim Pryor has no talent, can’t make it as an NFL QB, I am not sure. He played for a big time collegiate school and had an excellent record. I purposely compared him to Cam Newton to show the similarity of talent, based on stats. Of course the intangibles cannot be accounted for here, and are beyond the scope of this posting. Corky, time and again, dismisses Pryor, stating that Pryor will never be an NFL QB. The problem with Corky’s opinion is that Corky never gives a reason for his contention.
I personally think there should be a heavy emphasis playing Cam Newton in pre-season just to assess his abilities.

If you look at Pryor’s throwing motion it seems natural, no artificial crimping with a hitch, like Tebow, can be seen. Also Pryor and Newton’s throwing motion are similiar. Pryor has an arm and routinely completed passes which were in the air from 50 to 60 yds.

Finally, we got Pryor for the price of a developmental player. If he bombs, very little harm suffered. However, I am placing my money on the side betting Pryor will be our franchise QB, good well into the future.
