Routt signs with Chiefs

By Jerry McDonald - NFL Writer
Monday, February 20th, 2012 at 10:42 am in Oakland Raiders.

Cornerback Stanford Routt agreed to terms with the Kansas City Chiefs Monday, according to multiple media outlets and first reported by ESPN’s Adam Schefter.

Routt, who will have earned $15 million with the Raiders, according to one report, will get $11 million this season and $19.3 million over three years.

The knee-jerk reaction? It means the Chiefs aren’t interested in re-signing Brandon Carr, who I’m assuming had a better year than Routt in 2011 unless he had more than 18 penalties and gave up more than eight touchdown receptions.

– Monday is the first day teams can use the franchise designation. The Raiders will keep their plans close to the vest.

“We’ll keep every option available to us open,” general manager Reggie McKenzie said through a team spokesman.

The Raiders have two prime candidates for the franchise tag _ running back Michael Bush and strong safety Tyvon Branch.

now he can produce 1st downs for the opposing offense on 3rd an longs for another team with all his dam P.I. calls. he sure wasnt worth the money to stay with us, but im glad he went to a team we play twice a year and knowing his weaknesses will be great for a QB that practiced against him for over half a season.
Palmer will be torching his @ss twice a year and he will be giving us 1st downs for grabbing ford, moore and dhb.

Sign Carr and we have a improved secondary…the first step to a better defense.

  9. Raider O Says:

Routt had 18 penalties and gave up 8+ TDs.
    We can do better.

  10. Aviontheone Says:

now it’s time to see what Chekwa and DVD can do. I am assuming they will play a lot better this year not having to line up in man coverage the whole game.

i’m wondering if a lot trades will happen on draft day…

as for KC – they need O-lineman more than anything else….

    Sam,

KC is expected to pursue Samson Satele, Stephon Heyer & Khalif Barnes when free agency opens next month

  12. RaiderRockstar Says:

I, too, hope the Raiders go after Brandon Carr. He can be a true #1 corner. Younger than Routt – better, too.

Hopefully they can clear enough room to make a run at him.

Kelly, Henderson, Eugene, Chris Johnson will have to be cut. Maybe even Huff, but something tells me Huff is smart enough to restructure. He knows exactly how many calls his agent got when he was a free agent. Palmer will restructure, too.

We’re going to be playing a ton of zones this year, which Routt has never shown he can play. No big loss.

KC is $60+ million under the cap, they can Tag one of their FAs (Bowe/ Carr), and sign the other one to a big contract. They can also afford to sign a few big name FA due to their cap situation.

Routt has talent, but is not a big-time player. I have no problem with him going to the other side. Let’s see him cover Moore.

It’s exciting — at least to me — to see an overpaid and over-rated player leave the Raiders for a change.

Otherwise, I’m not as big a Branch fan as others. But we have to keep him because the secondary is so weak. There needs to be some veteran leadership next season.

I say let Bush go. We can get a cheaper, faster back-up. If Jones is ready, hopefully we only need a third-stringer or short-yardage back. Someone will be available.

19.3 million divided by 3 is less than 6.5 million per season. Asomugha is making 12.

Nnamdi obviously, but that ship has sailed.

I agree that it’s nice to see the door swinging the other way with over-paid, under-performing players. I’m hoping that Routt is the first of a few to be shown the door.

Here’s to the end of “Club Oakland”… where players go to chill out and cash checks.

And I’d guess that Routt will be the excuse when the Raiders spank the Chefs twice next season….

  24. Gdog Says:

If he gets away with his incessant arm-hooking, and hand checking vs the Raiders twice a year, it will drive me insane.

  25. morilla Says:

Good. Now we get to see him twice a year. Hey Palmer, throw his way.

  26. No Lo Says:

I agree with all the previous posts re Routt. He had to go for all the reasons previously cited.
My take is what took the Raiders that long. He should have been cut immediately after the San Diego disaster when he stated, “I think we have a really good defense.” Physical talent with a 10 cent brain.

  27. YoungAmerican Says:

The Wimbley contract is indeed “out-of-whack”.

But if he’s not willing to restructure? The Raiders are probably better off keeping him.

Truth be told, there are A LOT of bad contracts on the Raiders, and Wimbley is the only one of them who came even close to justifying his salary.

Sure, he doesn’t get a lot of sacks. But he does get a lot of pressures (6th most in the league last season, if I’m not mistaken), and that counts for something.

He also has something that few Raiders defenders do – versatility. In 3-4 sets, Wimbley provides the Raiders with their only true rush linebacker. In the 4-3, he’s an average SLB, but also gives them depth at DE.

Outside of Super Mario and Cliff Avril (who are going to get P-A-I-D paid), it’s a weak group of DEs in free agency. In addition, not only is the 4-3 DE draft class VERY top-heavy this year, 4-3 DEs are hard to find in the draft – especially without any high draft picks.

Wimbley gives the Raiders another option at 4-3 DE, especially on passing downs. If the Raiders would have to pay him over half his salary anyway, they’re better off with him on the roster for at least another season.

Routt, who will have earned $15 million with the Raiders, according to one report, will get $11 million this season

Well how about that for a guy who sucks?

  30. YoungAmerican Says:

BUT if Wimbley says no and we keep him, what message does that send to everyone else we ask to restructure?

    ——————-

Some of those contracts are MUCH less detrimental to the Raiders than Wimbley’s, and would therefore be easier to cut ties with. Curry and Huff in particular.

Tommy Kelly, Chris Johnson, John Henderson, and Hiram Eugene could all be gone as well, with very little cap hit.

  31. RaiderDogg Says:

The first thing you will notice while watching Routt play for the Chiefs is they will not call PI on him as much, if at all, like they did while he was a Raider.

  32. bcz24 Says:

I think that 11 million # for this season includes the $5 million we are already on the hook for this season.

  33. J Hill Says:

So should we really go after Carr?

Seems like KC thinks Routt is better.

  34. bcz24 Says:

I wouldn’t be at all surprised if Curry, Eugene, Henderson, and CJ37 are all show the door. Of the 4 only Curry is worth more than vet minimum, and that is curry, who is worth about 2 million imo

Seems like KC thinks Routt is better.
    *********************
Nah, Kc just thinks they can get close similar production for 6 mill a year, where Carr’s contract demands have probably been more expensive. I bet Carr is looking for 8-10 mil

  37. J Hill Says:

Just because Curry can’t cover WRs or TEs in man to man doesn’t mean he’s slightly above vet minimum.

  38. jraider Says:

    Great news!
Now when we play them, we can just throw bombs to Routt…knowing that he’ll eventually pull the WR down and give us a 1st down.

    Go Raiders!

  39. YoungAmerican Says:

I don’t understand why KC is being so frugal. They did this last season, too. I get not wanting to be right up against the cap. But if a team has as many holes as KC does, and $60 million + to spend, you’d think they’d be a little more active.

  40. R8rArt Says:

You will see the PI’s go down in KC for Routt.
Not because the ref’s, but because KC, like most teams, would have disciplined/sat Routt at some point, and made him accountable, something Hue never did, even once.

We set a record for penalties because not one player was worried about any backlash or reaction.

Not once did I see Hue call a player over, or approach a player leaving the field after a mistake.

Just because Curry can’t cover WRs or TEs in man to man doesn’t mean he’s slightly above vet minimum.

    ————-

Can’t cover them in zone, either. Seahawks found that out first-hand. Also isn’t much of a pass rusher. Those skills are kind of important when you’re a 4-3 WLB. Or a 3-4 ILB, for that matter – although his deficiencies would be easier to mask in that case.

He can run and hit. Decent player against the run. That’s pretty much all Curry can do. Limited player. Not worth $5 million a year. $2 million a year at the absolute most, and even that’s a bit of a stretch.

  42. BewareofRaiders Says:

Could this mean Brandon Carr could come to oakland? I hope so and aldo bring another Vet CB and our four CB will be set with chekwa dvd carr and or finnegan/porter/grimes. And Ford Moore and DHB probably love this because they get to torch his @ss

  43. YoungAmerican Says:

Carr, Finnegan, and Grimes will all command contracts in the $8-$10 million per year range. Raiders will have to clear plenty of space if they want to make a run at any of those guys and still keep Branch (as well as some other role players).

It’s more likely that Tracy Porter and Richard Marshall will be targets – as well as Trumaine Johnson or Leonard Johnson in the draft if the Raiders get that compensatory 3rd round pick.

  44. Hardline Says:

Bad for KC and good for us. The next drag we must rid ourself of is Huff: he’s been around here way too long and in fact done little.

And quit wanderlusting in your minds for Nnamdi to return. He was basically a slug, who, because of his good character standards and high ideals was heads and tails, as a person, above most players. However, that does not justify his designation as “shutdown corner” gaining only 11 INT’s for the Raiders in 8 yrs. Nnamdi was a decent CB but no playmaker. I challenge anyone to identify what game, or season Nnamdi won or influenced substantially becuause of his great playmaking. I doubt my challenge can be met.

It’s a new day, let’s dump the schlubs and start with new blood.

  45. J Hill Says:

Curry will make more than 2 million this year.

    You can print that!

KC thinks Routt is better than Carr. 2 million a year difference to let him walk when they are 60 million under? Pretty obvious they disagree on who is better between Routt and Carr. Especially with a defensive minded coach like Crennell, wouldn’t you say?

  46. J Hill Says:

Anyone think Curry might be a little better next year actually having a training camp to get used to his guys and the playbook?

  47. Raider O Says:

    RR,

Good point. I forgot about Flowers.

  48. YoungAmerican Says:

KC thinks Routt is better than Carr.

    ————

    And KC is wrong.

Also, Curry had plenty of time to look like a legitimate player in Seattle. “Learning the playbook” isn’t the problem. Having a very limited skill set is.

    ————————-

Man, it cracks me up when some of you guys try to impress us.

“Wanderlusting in your minds?” Haha. WTF does that even mean?

Wanderlust = A strong desire to wander. It has NOTHING to do with some people wanting Nnamdi back.

We are impressed with the language skills, Hardline troll!

  52. J Hill Says:

I see Curry make big hits, not miss tackles, play fast, play aggressive.

Most of his issues, imo, came in pass coverage against guys I was not surprised to see him get beat by.

The guy was a consensus top 5 pick. I think I’ll wait to see what Allen and Tarver come up with to utilize his skillset before just writing the guy off.

    Same with McClain and Huff.

  53. YoungAmerican Says:

WLBs have to cover. That’s part of the job description. If he can’t, that makes him a 2-down player at best.

  54. HayesDaze37 Says:

J — There isn’t a guy to be left on the Defense who will not improve…with a strict coaching staff that will demand discipline on the field.

Pete Carroll and Bresnahan/HueJax aren’t exactly known as taskmasters.

D.A. & Tarver = Just what the Defense ordered.

    I hope.

  55. J Hill Says:

If he can’t, that makes him a 2-down player at best.

    ——————————————————-

    Disagree.

I think he can be unleashed on the QB. Move him around and let him attack the backfield.

This is where I look for Allen and Tarver to come upwith something.

  56. HayesDaze37 Says:

Curry moves in space very well, very naturally. But, he has issues with bad angles, and either over/under-running his target…there are times where “break-downs,” containment, and other football fundamentals are flung out the window in the name of enthusiasm.

It’s time for discipline on Defense. From penalties to gap assignments…Tarver and D.A. will get it done.

  61. YoungAmerican Says:

If Allen and Tarver turn Curry into a pass-rusher, I’d be very impressed. Coming out of college, that was the one knock on his game – that he wasn’t much of a pass-rusher. He did everything else well, though, so he was considered a pretty safe pick.

Honestly, I hope he restructures. He’s a good fit in Oakland and he does some things well. I just don’t think the Raiders should spend $5 million on him. They’re $11 million over the cap and they have other players who offer more than Curry does at positions that are harder to find in the draft/FA than Curry’s (Huff, Wimbley, Palmer, Branch for example).

Stanford Routt is no Raider. Stan Routt is one of THEM.

  68. cfrylopez Says:

@#44 Hardline, I agree Nnamdi is not a Great Playmaker, more of a great or maybe very good cover guy. BUT in 2006 the worst season in Raiders history during the Al Davis era, the Raiders only won 2 games that season. 1 of the victories was against the Hated Steelers in a close defensive Battle! Nnamdi had 2 Redzone INTS, 1 in the Endzone, & the other for an 85 or 90 touch down return. I believe the Raiders won 12 to 9, & it was Nnamdi’s best game as a “Playmaker”, & his playmaking almost single handedly beat the Hated Steelers “th@ game!”

  69. ArtilleryShell Says:

Back to the Routt signing, if he was as bad as all that why did they give him so much money. He was one of our better defenders, but not worth that contract, maybe like 1. 5 million per with incentives for play and wins

  70. No Lo Says:

    Re Curry. Agree with posts 43, 48, 53 and disagree with 46, 52, 55.
Curry is a special teams player and 1 or 2 down linebacker. It was very frustrating to see him bite on the play action, make a bee line to the fake, and there goes the running back catching a swing pass or the tight end slanting to his vacated area. Yet, he kept playing while making the same mistakes over and over. 5 mil for a special teams player who doesn’t have good instincts or plays with some semblance of intelligence- no thanks.

  71. ArtilleryShell Says:

Curry should be tried as a 3-4 ILB

  72. Hardline Says:

    cfrylopez, #68

I stand corrected Lopez, if what you say is true. It’s too bad Nnamdi couldn’t have had another dozen of those games. Then he could be truly called a shutdown corner of the playmaker variety.

The Underwood signing may be an indicator Reggie Mac may not care about that.

Granted Underwear is a 2nd string special teams guy at a cheaper price. All the more reason to hang onto Romac according to Reggie Mac.

Sounds like Ro mac will get every chance.

  76. ArtilleryShell Says:

We need to restructure a ton of contracts not just cut guys. Of course the players probably feel they could get more money if they were cut (see Routt) vs restructuring
Overpaid = Huff, Seymour, Wimbley, Chris Johnson, Hiram Eugene, McClain, Kelly, DHB, Palmer next year, and Big John Henderson. A lot of those guys are decent or better but they shouldn’t be cap killers

  77. ArtilleryShell Says:

    Don’t forget…ReggieMcK knows Underwood personally.

He’s completely in on whatever the “complete” story is, or however close to it as an outsider can be. Underwood and his ex are no more (and even she said their troubles were blown out-of-proportion).

Just like I trust ReggieMcK to bring success to the Raiders, I trust him to evaluate talent…and the people who have said talent. I trust that Reggie knows the “real” Underwood well enough…or he wouldn’t be bringing that kind of baggage here.

  82. BewareofRaiders Says:

  84. HayesDaze37 Says:

Routt does know our receivers, though…and their tendencies, strengths and weaknesses. He doesn’t need to know the Offense to know how guys play.

I would’ve preferred Routt go anywhere else but the AFC-W. Our former Players seem to have signature games when playing the Raiders…and it’s ALWAYS worse when it comes from in the division.

  85. Raiders for life Says:

I don’t know much about Reggie but I hope his reputation of finding talent is true.

Hayes, you have a particular irritating habit of exuding unjustified superiorty and arrogance. I never challenged any of your opinions – especially by personal attack – in any manner. Indeed, some of what you say has merit; it’s your opinion, you should be left alone to express that opinion.

I have said many times here, for the entire blog to see, my former S/N was AL D. Davis, and that SN was voided by Corky. I didn’t deny it or shirk the responsibility of identifying myself. The only reason anyone knew of my former ID is because I said so.

Also, I have only one SN, “Hardline” and don’t need “numerous handles in here, just to sign in.”

Additionally, almost all of what I said under AL. D. Davis was puffery and hyperbole, so exaggerated that any reasonable person would not believe it as truth.

Even under AL D. Davis I never engaged in personal attacks against individual posters, but kept my subject matter focused on Al Davis, a key staff member (HC) and several grossly underperforming players.

Imprecise language, syntax, or spelling should be no reason for any personal attack by one against another here. It’s prejudicial and insulting to the blog.

I said it before, anyone who calls me a “troll” should be able to prove it factually.

    Hayes,

McClain was put in his position with $23M guaranteed money by the fans who bought Raiders tickets and memorabilia. His total disrespect – refusing to do interviews, blowing his talent and promise of greatness over nonsense – toward the fans and nation spawned my anger towards him. I waited a long time for the Raiders to get a good draft pick at MLB, especially after drafting JaMarcus, and we get McClain. It was pure insult by McClain to all of us, and my wrath ran deep.

If McClain had owned up to his performance on-field, submitted to interviews, etc. to explain himself, it would have been okay. To me, I felt like he slapped me right in the face, especially with his gunplay behavior in ALA.

I told everyone on this blog that I overdid it in the past, and I did apologize for that.

  96. Hardline Says:

    Hayes,

As an admitted MBush29 backer, I’ve still got to say…

$7 million isn’t overpaying for Bush…it’s the going rate for a guy like him hitting the market, for his first two years on a new deal.

Here or elsewhere, MBush29, or a guy as talented, is going to be paid somewhere around $10-12 million guaranteed…on a deal much like the one we just heard about for Routt.

For all in here who say let Bush go, because Taiwan can be the #2…I say, when has Taiwan shown he can be even #3? Until he’s used to the daily rigors of NFL life, and his body can be counted on for more than a few games at a time, Taiwan Jones is just a fanciful pipe-dream fo us. Even when healthy, Taiwan hasn’t exploded like we hoped he would.

Picture this: Bush is gone. DMC is healthy in July. Taiwan is the clear #2-to-be. DMC tweaks a foot in the 2nd preseason game. Taiwan shows some flashes in preseason, but we must not overuse him/get him hurt. The new guy, LMiller shows some promise, but he’s raw. DMC starts a game or two, aggravates his foot injury, and now we need Taiwan to be #1. Is Taiwan ready to play? 70%+ of the downs?

I say we find a way to keep Bush…keep or trade DMC because he’s superstar-talented, with an affordable contract. We could replace DMC with somebody we hope can be more durable, and nearly as exlosive…but DON’T do it with an unknown/unproven, or an old RB like Benson). Regardless, we better HOPE once more that Taiwan Jones is ready for the NFL.

Of course, we could find a way to bring in Matt Forte! In my dreams.

Or…a more explosive version of Cedric Benson = LaGarrette Blount.

  126. Gdog Says:

Routt only had one good year in 7, and that was mostly due to subjective statistics collected by a website? 10 career ints in 7 years? You’d think he’d accidently get more than that, especially being tested so much on the other side of Asum. The eyeball test never looked that great to me… and he’s always been a PI waiting to happen. He’d prolly be really good in the pre-no-contact era… but isn’t instinctive enough to garner these types of contracts. Whose calling the shots with the Chiefs these days? This is a head-scratcher.

  144. Hardline Says:

    M. Bush rushed for 977 yds with 7 TDs. He also gained 418 yds on 38 receptions for 1 TD. As a starter with a full season, Bushed probably would have have gained over 1800 yds, rushing and receiving, and scored 12 TD’s. Also, in his limited role in 2011, but for Hue’s non-creative use of Bush, Bush probably would have gained more yardage and points.

In 7 games last season McFadden rushed for 614 yds, and scored 4 TDs. He also caught 19 passes for 154 yds and 1 TD.

If McFadden goes down for the season on schedule by the 7th or 8th game, we need Bush to fill in. It may be that Bush becomes #1, McFadden becomes #2 this year. This might save McFadden from injury.

We are clueless regarding Jones; in his very limited application last year, Jones wasn’t encouraging.

If we just toss Bush away, it will be impossible to fill his shoes at our greatest time of need. He should be paid for what he is worth; I see no running back on the horizon who can perform as well as Bush for the Raiders this upcoming season.

    my two cents,

Raiders have to keep the best players on the team. The issue with Routt goes all the way back to losing Nnamdi.( even though there are idiotic fans think otherwise) Good teams pay for a commodity, the raiders pay for potential.

Routt had to go based on penalties and redzone TD’s and for the amount he was being paid.

MBush is an interesting case, because I feel that the Raiders FO has no choice but to Tag M.Bush. there to much uncertainty about Mcfadden and TJ ( And there is no one in the draft that can replace him, esp the late 3-4 rds)

DMAC isnt going anywhere. He is a proven player when healthy and i think many of you forgot how good he is when healthy. And i read/hear of all the injury issues, RB’s get injuried. Do you hear the VIkings talking of trading Peterson, even though he was tagged as an injury prone player in College and had 2 big injuries in the NFL. He isnt going anywhere.

  166. olinesux Says:

Rainey is built like Darren Sproles, 5′7” 210. Fast, powerfull, has moves…

I really like Bush but have a hard time thinking he is worth the franchise tag or the ~$8mil to sign him. I am more inclined to go with the approach GB used in the last decade, develop guys, have guys in the wings waiting to get a chance.
    ==========================================

Quality depth in the league is at an all time low. You really need to have quality depth at the skill positions. That being said I don’t think I would franchise Mike, as much as I like him.

  177. JLofty Says:

But Kell that is how it is for a number one RB who wants to be “the man.”

  178. Lowdown_in_Beijing Says:

Tell that to Mike Brown the owner and GM of the Cincinnatti Bungholes. Since he has no idea about player evaluations personally and has no scouting department, he goes exclusively with the Mel Kiper system. Seriously.
    ———————————————
Never concerned myself with Mike Brown. Only Al Davis.

  180. JLofty Says:

I am not sure that is true SeymourBush but hopefully building a quality org as Reggie is attempting to do will help find more gems that are out there.

  181. Marks hair Says:

There has only been a few guys who could be an everydown back at m.bushs’ size.. And he isnt one of them.. Get the west coast brandon jacobs outa here!

  182. JLofty Says:

Yeah Kell, my co-worker is from Ohio (used to work for the Raiders in Alameda-has lots of stories) and he tells me funny schit about the Bungles all the time.
Why do you think Carson Palmer retired rather than continue working there?
But you have to give Brown some credit, his team looked a LOT better in 2011, stud D, rookie QB who could actaully play, not just cash No1 overall type paychecks…

Bush go for 1800yrds? Yeah right.

Marks, I meant that Bush as #1, if utilized properly, could probably rush and catch for 1800 yds in a season: 1200 rushing, 600 catching.

He already had 977 rushing and 418 catching, totaling 1388. Bush is no panacea, but, we have a lot more pressing needs on D to spend much time tinkering w/Bush on O.

  184. Lowdown_in_Beijing Says:

Always felt Al stayed around for the first fews rounds and then bailed…

Raiders had a lot of gems in the 5th-7th rounds…

Biekert, Rod Coleman, Eric barton Grady Jackson, etc…

There are lots of gems out there now that Al’s shadow no longer looms large on draft day.

  185. KoolKell Says:

The Bengals have been to the playoffs, twice as many times as the Raiders the last 10 years, ok? ;-)

  186. JLofty Says:

I think with the way the NFL is these days, with the concussions and injuries and players not being quite like they were in the “old days,” that talent evaluators and the organizations that provide a stable farm system type pipeline are going to rise to the top. I think the Patriots, Steelers among several others, have been exploiting this for some time. The Raiders and Al Davis always operated like a Dave Kingman at-bat. Swing for a home run every time, hope you connect. It didn’t work much, hadn’t worked for a long time, and the last guy who got even close (Gruden) got run out of town and failed when he landed there.
I like the approach taken so far. Get some young coaches who like to work hard and do what they do, and build a solid org from which to build depth and talent.
    Should be fun to watch…

  187. exlaraiderseasonticketholder Says:

Bush’s yrds per carry declines every year.

    2009 4.8
    2010 4.1
    2011 3.9

Sound like a guy deserving the franchise tag?

    Get real.

  188. Marks hair Says:

    183. I love bush and his skills for about 3.5mil.. But he want to start, so it will cost us 7.7 mil.. Send him packing.. Draft a new guy, or bring in a fa. Whats to tinker with?

  189. JLofty Says:

Oh and find someone in the org who can FIND & DEVELOP QBs. Critical.
Not just one either. Gotta have >1 for when the top guy gets clocked and has to sit a few weeks on the new concussion protocol that will be implemented soon.

  190. Marks hair Says:

    187. Exactly. Plus he’s getting old..
the only way bush gets 1800 yds is by sacrificing the offense..

I also disagree that RB’s aren’t out there to replace Bush. It may not be in the draft though. Where did that young stud Houston got come from? Or the young stud they dumped with him? A LOT of great running backs are MADE not just plucked from an SEC/Pac12 school

    ^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^

I would not say peterson is 3X more durable then DMAC and what are you basing this from. Peterson was riddled with injuries his last 3 years at OU, to the point were if he was healthy, he was projected to be #1 pick. As compared to DMAC who played every game his last 2 years at for Arkansas

its comedic how people reacted when DMAC got Turf toe, in that people assume its not a serious injury or doesnt take team to heal. And now he gets injured this year and people are calling for his head.

So by some people logic, if Adrain Peterson, Jamal Charles, and Chris Johnson should be traded if they experience another season ending injury?

And I played Pac 10 (12) ball… And have followed NCAA football for 6 years, so please name one RB that will develop into a starters? in the late rds?

Routt gave up 5 of 8 TDs last year on the same quick slant to the post in the redzone. I believe he was responsible for 7 TDs in the redzone. I hated that effer and did my homework on him. I took crap on this blog when Al gave him the contract and KK/others kept on telling me how great his stats were. 17 flags and 8 tds. 241. REALLIONAIREB Says:

I wld hav thought da pats wld hav tried 2 sign Routt wit the history we hav wit dem swappin players but I guess dey get a coner in da draft wit all those picks dey hav

  242. Chris in NY Says:

This signing confirms that people in the know are of the belief that Routt is far better than most Raiders fans are giving him credit for. He is now being paid in line with his ability, about $6-7 million per year. Which indicates a very good player, just not an elite one like we were paying him with the $10 million per year deal.

Jerry and others have chosen to focus solely on the penalties and TDs allowed issues from 2011. But what about the fact that he’s allowed one of the lowest completion percentages against over the last two seasons?

Touchdowns are a tricky, fickle stat. I don’t believe this has been a consistent problem for Routt and it’s quite common to see players’ TDs scored and TDs allowed totals swing wildly from year to year. Some years a receiver will have 4 TDs and the next year he’ll have 14 TDs with similar yardage numbers.

Plus, shedding the Silver & Black should reduce the number of penalties called on him by half.

  243. Marks hair Says:

I dont have, or care about routts stats. But he played alot of very solid corner for us. He was put on that island way more than any other db in the league, and his coaches sucked.. AL paid him WAY too much $$ and it forced us to cut him.. Alot like he did with namdi

  244. aig-raiders Says:

Vs Miami – Bess killed Routt on crossing patterns.

Vs KC – Dwayne Bowe would be open all day running hitches.

vs the Redzone – Opposing OC’s discovered that Routt couldnt handle the quick slant to the post.

The only pattern he has any chance of defending is the deep bomb which plays to his speed. It’s no coincidence teams started to run quick slants on him in the 2nd half of the season whenever they were in the redzone.

  245. Marks hair Says:

    244. I agree with the slant prob.. Yuck. But he’ll be a #2 guy now with more help to the inside..

  246. J Hill Says:

I doubt very seriously a defensive guy with the reputation of Romeo Crennel would replace a top flight corner like Carr with a guy who has ZERO football IQ.

Pretty sure did their homework on the guy too.

Do you know how easy quick slant are to complete?

A 5 yd pass against man to man coverage?

You either take away the fade and sideline or the slant. The guy is not Revis for goodness sakes.

I bet Allen and Tarver have a guy in that area instead of asking the corners to do so much inside our own 10 yard line.

I could see if Routt was getting toasted for TDs. But 5 yd “quick slants”???

If my memory is correct, this is when Lito earned the starting spot on the other side and can’t be a coincidence that this was about the time teams started attacking Routt. That prob explains why he gave more tds during this time as well (if my memory is correct).

Oakland Raiders CB Stanford Routt was the most penalized player in the NFL in 2011, as he was flagged 17 times, including nine times in the final three regular season games. He allowed opponents to complete 47.4 percent of passes thrown his way while giving up eight touchdowns. It wasn’t all bad, as he posted a career-high four interceptions.

2010 vs Miami and Chad Henne. Raiders 17 Mia 33

It was a game we had to win. We couldnt stop Chad Henne and Davonne Bess going across the middle for first downs. Bess 6 catches and 111 yds. A good number of it was the crossing patterns.

Routt had admitted early in his career that he wasnt comfy in the slot and nothing has changed since.

  260. Raider Dell Says:

He allowed opponents to complete 47.4 percent of passes thrown his way while giving up eight touchdowns

8 of those flags were in the last 2 games.

We beat KC, and lost against SD.

Floyd and Gates were killing us in that last game. Routt was hardly a reason we lost.

  268. J Hill Says:

    First of all, Dell …

    I’m not averaging anything.

Doug Farrar pointed out, as you just stated, that NINE of his penalties came in 3 games.

How are attacking the facts when we are all saying the same thing?

You are focusing on the last 3 games, Farrar is pointing out (which I happen to agree with) that the other 13 games is probably a more accurate assesment of where he is.

As far as the last 3 games, are you really saing Routt was the problem?

We should have won against Det, PERIOD! Routt had what one penalty at the end of the game against Megatron? That hardly lost the game for us.

    We WON against KC.

Again, Floyd and Gates killed us against SD, not Routt.

It is what it is. You guys think Routt stinks, I think he was a decent corner.

A DC with a good reputation around the league also thinks Routt is a decent corner and gave him decent corner money.

I don’t care about what Doug Farrar has said. I can see with my own eyes, how Routt on many critical red zone teams beat him and many times on third down he gave up the completition to continue a drive to score, or place our offense in bad field position.

To defend Routt is like defending Jamarcus, yes he completed passes, but not many, and was not a team player, that’s one point ol Dougy can’t write about as Routt was for himself.

    ^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^
Im glad you can google something, but how about you google that the entire truth rather than the Last for years.

Facts: ( googled just for you )
Injury History of Adrain Peterson: Missed more than two games with a lateral collateral sprain in 2007. Missed six games at Oklahoma in 2006 after breaking a collarbone. Sat on the sidelines for all or portions of four games as a sophomore with an ankle injury.

As compared to DMAC who suited up every single game in college…So you do the Math Playa….Ill do it for you, Peterson has missed more than double the games DMAC has in the last 7 years.

My point and the only point Im made was we dont know what we have with DMAC….But no GM/ Owner would trade him for future draft picks.because,

    1. If healthy, during his contact year ( wink wink) he is probably the best RB in the NFL. And if you trade that for an unproven college player…lol thats the type of move that sets a franchise back for years.

    2. Jlofy, you just named 1 player that was undrafted that ran for over 1000 yards…I dare you to name another in the last 10 years….Im waiting

—answer: no one has, and yet you think the Raiders are going to miraculously draft someone in the 4 rd, like him…clown

  281. JLofty Says:

Uh I already did Truth. Ryan Grant. If I am not mistaken he was an UFA. Signed by one of the personnel people who is now the head personnel guy in Alameda.

Dude, you are arguing about Peterson vs. McFadden in COLLEGE?!?! Who CARES! That is irrelevant.

Facts are McFadden has had durability issues in his 4 year NFL career. Has NEVER played 16 full games. Has missed nearly 3x as many games in one less season than Peterson has in the NFL. Not college, not high school, not pop warner, but the pros.

I am not advocating it, but it would not surprise me to see our new GM and his team trade DMAC. It is possible to develop a system where RB by committee can be VERY successful. Or a RB can be DEVELOPED and be less costly than a top 5 draft pick. Happens all the time…
Again, I am not saying I would deal DMAC, but it would definately be on the table…

  282. JLofty Says:

    1- Seymour
    2- TK
    3- Wimbley
    4- Curry
    5- Huff
    6- Henderson
    7- Eugene

Teams with good pass rushers and a good QB win SBs. Look at the Giants. We have a good QB, but we do need to improve our pass rush & Run defense.

  286. Just Win Baby Says:

Those players that take less money elsewhere are taking the most that they can get, usually after leaving here being overpaid.

    ^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^

thats another poor example. Ryan Grant barely made the 53 man roster last year and when he was healthy never got any carries…he’ll be cut this year or next. Guaranteed.

My point with Peterson is that he was labeled a Injury prone player at a point and yet if he is now considered the best RB in the game. Regardless of college/NFL he was able to shack that label. AND DMAC SHOULD BE GIVEN THE SAME CHANCE

Blount was undrafted because he punched a Boise State player and signed with a team that later released him…He is a good runner, but Horrible ( pass blocker and is never in on 3rd downs)

Jackie battle played only after injuries to Jamal Charles, and was given the ball on almost every carry once the lost there TE, QB to injury and yet only mustered up 700 yards ( in 2 seasons)

Terrel Davis…uhm, I could have sworn I said last 10 years, but ok. lol

Fred jackson is the only one I can give you credit for…But and thats a Big BUT!!!!t thats the same Fred Davis that was placed on IR this year..

oh and Blount got 781 yards last season…. Googled that just for ya

  292. JLofty Says:

I am not arguing your point Truth. I am merely providing sources and backup for mine…
I just gave you 4 undrafted free agent RBs who had significant success for their teams in recent years as defined by YOUR 1000 yrd season benchmark.
It is possible to have success at the pro level at RB without being a top pick. In fact I could give a MUCH longer list of top draft pick busts. Many who ACTUALLY set their teams back due their circumstance.

I would NOT be surprised to see DMAC traded. I think he did a terrific job making himself better after his first two years and I do NOT hold against him his desire not to shoot up on pain killers to play. He is not going to cost us a LOT this year since he has been paid already. But if he goes a 5th year without playing most of the year THEN his value PLUMMITS and he leaves us with nothing but an empty checkbook. You can see why a GM might want to trade him, right? You can understand why a GM might want some kind of plan B in place just in case. His primary injuries are NOT a broken collarbone like Petersen’s college time. And OU didn’t have to pay AP $8million to miss those games…we did.

    WE both agree with that….

There is plenty of talent at the RB spot in the late rds, no one is arguing that. But the Potential of DMAC is greater then any 3rd-5 rd running back.

Houshmandzadeh expects Palmer to rebound with Raiders He’s different — was much more vocal in Oakland then I ever remember him in Cincinnati. That aspect he is different. I’m biased toward Carson, but when we worked out (during Palmer’s retirement) he was throwing the ball so hard — more so than going into his last year in Cincinnati. I think he noticed that. It was hard coming in midway. He said when he went in the first game against Kansas City, he only knew a few plays.

Then they had a bye, but it was harder than he thought. He admitted it to me. I think now, the offense he’s in with (coordinator Greg Knapp) is perfect, perfect, perfect for him. Greg Knapp probably has one of the best playbooks of any offensive coordinator I played under. What he likes to do with his quarterback is perfect for Carson. Oh yeah, and to slob my nob.

  333. Raider O Says:

  334. J Hill Says:

    3-4, my # 1 concern is getting a NT.

I like our 3 LBs potential in the 3-4 with Allen and Tarver scheming. Or I’ll say that I at least want to see what they are able to come up with for those guys.

I think McKenzie will find us a 4th LB and some depth for those positions in rd 4 or so and in FA.

I do think we’ll spend some nice change on a corner though.

  335. J Hill Says:

ShoNasty is cheap and a baller.

Wonder what Allen and Tarver have in mind for him in a 3-4?

Bryant and Seymour seem to be the ideal 3-4 DEs.

Maybe ShoNasty loses 10 lbs and makes the switch to OLB like Mario Williams did?

  336. Wazz Up Jizzle Slupp Says:

The guy has absolutely no self control… he will pay us dividends. Great move by cutting him, now that he is in the AFCW. Best move by new management thus far, IMO.

    >>>>>

No kidding. Nothing is worse than letting a great player go that turns out great. I can handle McF staying here and getting injured again, or not turning out. It happens.

No way can I handle him going somewhere else and setting the league on fire with a chip on his shoulder.

CWood was bad enough, even though he didn’t want to stay here, but losing McF that from all indications loves being a Raider?

Thats not how you run a franchise…

  343. Gdog Says:

Oh.. and if he gets traded and flops somewhere AND the draft pick we get in return turns out an all-pro (how likely is that??) I will look at it as just dummass-luck. Not a great business move. Nobody moves their best young player for prospects… even with injury problems.

    ^^^^^^^^^
It’s interesting because Bush is a better ZBS runner than DMC is also.

most of Routts penalties were bogus. Get with a new team, springs a new identity ,calls may fall in your favor. The plan suits well for Routt. Just as it scripted as it did for my man C woodson. One of the best corners to play the game. If the Refs find favor with Routt on the KCF team it will be trade gone wild, advantage KFC.

  348. raiderzmaverick Says:

The Raiders Pass Defense as a whole looked way way better 2 years ago than last year. It was a pretty damned good unit. Then it all went to crap. Is that entirely due to Nnamdi? I don’t think so (although I think he definitely played a strong part in how solid that unit was).

Routt looked pretty good 2 years ago. Last year he regressed majorly like the rest of our defense. How much was him. Maybe he was never comfortable in what he was supposed to be doing in the new defense installed and so tried to make up for his shortcomings with all those penalties playing “catchup”.

Regardless, if he plays anywhere near as badly as last year than the Chiefs are downgrading. If he plays like 2 years ago, than they have a pretty good corner.

Do we have a shot at Richard Marshall at CB?

  373. RaiderRockstar Says:

Routt competed for the starting CB job opposite Asomugha and lost 3 times to Fabian Washington, DeAngelo Hall & CJ37.

He was terrible in the slot, which earned him the nickname “Toast”

Either Routt will start in KC or they’ll re-sign Brandon Carr and play Routt in the slot.

I think that McKenzie & Allen will find a way to restructure deals and terminate contracts in a way that gets us under the cap and still allows us to sign a few key missing peices

no more Al Davis way of doing things. “hey Wimbley, we need to get under the cap this year. Can we pay you $1 mil this year and $11 million next year?”

“hey Seymour. you’re our 1st rounder. we gotta have you back. whats it gonna take to keep you happy? 30 mil?” done deal … we gave that brick feet McClain $40 million!

  383. bcz24 Says:

Also you have to remember, how much the are slated to make this year is not necessarily how much cap space you can make to cut them. Rolando McClain for example, only slated to make about 1 million this year, but if we cut him today, it would accelerate his signing bonus and COST us $13.5 mill towards the cap.

Hendo and Eugene will most certainly be cut, Curry renegotiated (not restructured… restructured means the get the same or more money over a period to prorate the cap hit) or gets cut that will get us under the cap, but we have no room to play. There will be no real free agency for us (maybe some second or third tier guys) and unfortunately we will just have to suck it up and HOPE some UDFA’s can make a real difference

The entire game, the defensive line is chasing the quarterback around, and that wears down the pass rush. Meanwhile, the defensive backs are chasing receivers, but you only throw eight passes, so they start to feel lazy. It only takes that one play, that one big pass, for a touchdown.

Routt is not garbage as many people here are saying.

Facts is, he had a down year in 2011 as did everyone on the Defense but still rated 19th in coverage according to profootballfocus.com ranks, ahead of Brandon Carr.

You don’t give a bad player 20 million over 3 seasons, not when you are KC and have the cap room to sign any CB you want this year.

    ===================================

But again none of the Raider defenders had any idea how to play a zone coverage. The coaching staff must have put up this flow chart

    How to Play Zone:

Step One: Drop five steps backwards into coverage
Step Two: watch opponent complete pass
Step Three: make half assed attempt at tackling opponent
Step four: point finger at team mates

    *****************
Huffs cap hit is $5.8 million, the acceleration of his signing bonus if he is cut would cost us $5.5 million, he is NOT getting cut for $300k in savings

Henderson will only cost us $750k to cut saving $4 million

TK’s cap hit this year is close to 9 million, if we cut him he will cost about $6 mill (after the acceleration of his signing bonus)

CJ37’s cap hit would have been $4.2 million but it seems he is listed as not active in the league. I think we quietly may have already cut him?

Eugene’s contract has no guarantees, he will free up 2.5 mill if not retained.

    Any others?

Routt was by no means garbage. He was pretty good, maybe a bit overpaid, but he made some plays down the stretch. He was a bit of a drop-off after we lost Nnamdi, but now after Routt, the drop off is extremely hard. DVD is a gentle joke, and Chekwa looks like he will be good but he is going to need a couple of seasons to really get the position. Not sure about Underwood considering he was cut by the Packers. I was worried about our CBs after we lost Nnamdi, but I’m much more worried now after Routt too.

Unless we are going to be shifting the defensive scheme from the age-old philosophy of mostly playing man2man, our CBs are going to be in trouble…big time.

Now I am sure Palmer will work a new deal. He is due $40 mill over the next 3 years, but none of that is guaranteed. If we cut him before opening day he cost’s us nothing (aside from the picks already spent). He will work out a cap friendly deal I think.

Wimbley’s contract is far and away the worst because he holds the power right now. We are stuck with it, unless we cut him on principle, which will save us close to $5 mill but leave us with a big big whole in the LB core.

Seymour I am certain will work a new deal for a few more years so he can retire here, that will be much much more cap friendly, but won’t put us in the prediciments the past ‘renegotiating’ has.

We have lived on the ‘credit card’ philosophy for FAR too long in Oakland borrowing for the future for success today, and fallen short doing so. what worked on Defense last year?

pass rush? run defense? pass defense? turnovers?

look at all the awful contracts on that side of the football. I’m saying if Reggie can save a few million, go ahead and whack 5 or 6 dudes and let’s move on. I don’t want to hear about “we’re only saving 500k!” or “who are we gonna get to replace him?” it’s not about that right now. The offense basically carried the defense the past two years. What makes 2012 any different? We have legit coaching. We have a GM who can find talent and eliminate the scholarship program. We’re gonna be creative on Defense. We’re gonna mix it up. I’m telling you right now I wouldn’t be a bit surprised to see Giordano & Mitchell replace Huff & Branch in the starting lineup … unless they get beat out by some cheap FA’s and undrafted guys

You don’t pay good money to a player that doesn’t buy in or give it his all. the slackers are outta here. I don’t think Reggie is afraid to cut ties with ROMAC either. If he has off field baggage, avoids the media, doesn’t display any leadership, doesnt improve this offseason and doesnt want to be held accountable .. whack him! We’ll cut corners elsewhere and make up for it

  443. r8eray Says:

Assuming Arian Foster — a restricted free agent — stays in Houston, that leaves Michael Bush as perhaps the most complete back likely to hit the open market. We’d rank Peyton Hillis, BenJarvus Green-Ellis, Cedric Benson, and Mike Tolbert as the next guys in line.

Bush wore down late last year, failing to top 80 rushing yards in his last six starts. He’s better used as a complementary player. Tolbert may be the best value of the group because he has a versatile skill and won’t cost a lot. Benson no longer breaks tackles and can’t help on passing downs.

I love the optimism, but it’s not like Reggie Mac is some sort of genius that is going to outsmart all of the other 31 teams out there looking for UDFA talent. The fact is, the teams with the best and most draft picks and continuity of signed starters are in much better position to win and win now. Could it happen? Sure. But not likely. It’s always about that brother, this is a business, sometimes you have to roll with bad decisions because there is no way to make it right. You can’t just cut guys and not have replacements. Yes are defense was monumentally bad last year, but that doesn’t mean the same group of guys can’t play better. A full offseason to implement a scheme, and constant coaching of that same scheme will show dramatic improvements in that squad. I trust the coaching staff to roll with THIS group of players and improve this defense by 8-10 places.

Hell look at Denver in 10 and 11, they were as equally as pathetic in 2010 as we were in 2011, they didnt gut the roster, the brought in a DC and a defensive minded
HC and played pretty damn well with minimal additions.

You get this very same group of guys a modern defensive scheme and the discipline to do what they are supposed to EVERY down, plus cut out half the penalties and you will have yourself a defense we dont spend all day complaining about.

It’s true that it’s RM’s show to make the pieces all work out, but at some point he can’t take complete discretion on the way the team spends money. It has to be ultimately approved by MD as it is his money to spend. I’m sure the 2 have met and discussed the overall strategy and it is probably a fluid one, given the pace and flow of free agent signings. They will be sitting back and let others make the splash signings and try to pickup the overlooked guys on the cheap. But I don’t see that as all on McKenzie. But I also think at some point in free agency, Mark Davis is going to be asked to seriously consider signing some guys he really didn’t think he could afford. At that point it won’t just be McKenzie.

Routt and Kelly have never had a coaching staff expect them to play with discipline. Their entire careers have been in a system where they’re protected by the owner, with no accountability.

At least Huff shows SOME desire. But when you’re making $8 million a season, desire only goes so far. He said after the season he didn’t play like an $8 million-a-year player. Trade Boss or restructure, but do not just let him walk; his salary & cap are not that bad for a starting TE.

We could get a 4th rounder for him easily; quality TE’s are a hot commodity in the NFL.
    ***********
Why get rid of him at all? $2 mill for a starting TE is peanuts.

  486. DMAC Says:

    Thoughts on Routt?

Do we torch him twice next season or does his penalties come down w/ another team?

If we can sign Carr away from KC, that would be nice.

    **************
Not sure where this $8 mill per year myth is coming from but Huff is only making $5.6 mill this year.

2012, 2013 and 2014 Salary 4,000,000 all 3 years, the cap hit for his bonus is $1,828,750 (this bonus was paid last year and prorated over the life of the contract). So his cap hit is $5,828,750 each of the next 3 years. We would literally save $300k by cutting him, not even the league minimum for a rookie, and be forced to roll with Giordano as a 16 game starter. Not a very sound football move.

Routt is one, we dont have the #2 overall draft pick, so that eliminates one of the replacement starters, and Curry to be replaced.

For the record, I think Curry takes a pay cut and sticks around, dont necessarily think he starts next year though.

I think we add at least one starting calibur CB, but it is going to be a bargain guy, not a top notch starter like Carr or Grimes or Finnegan.

I also think we add at least one DL who may will play a much bigger part in the rotation than Henderson did, the semi-pros thinking Buckley might be on the right track there.

  496. Marks hair Says:

Routt will do fine. We put that poor kid on an island more than any guy in the league.. The to raise the pressure we overpaid him by 5mil a yr.. Plus we gave him no help to the inside, our saftes cant cover.. And chuck b is the worst coach in the nfl..

Really like Chekwa’s versatility and he’s cheap. No reason to let him go. Mike Mitchell has a good motor and is still on the raw side, but give him a chance to prove himself to coach Allen. I think he’ll have a role. Trever Scott is intruiging, and I think he needs at least another TC to show he can come back from that injury of 2 yrs ago. John Henderson should be re-signed on the cheap if possible as he is a force in limited snap counts. The rest of em can pound sand.

    ——————————————————-
Yeah I think I Agree. The thing about the bloated out-of-whack contracts that we have (see Wimbley) here might have us “eat” this year. It might actaully be a good idea to franchise a player like Branch because we would only be on the hook for a year.

This could give us a chance to evaluate and seek replacements, and give us the cap-room to make some big moves next year.

If Branch doen’t work out, the Franchise is only a one-year deal and we can get rid of him later.

In terms of BIG name palyers, we might not have the Cap-space and we definitely do not have the Draft picks. We’ll probably have to wait for next year when we have both.
