Routt signs with Chiefs

By Jerry McDonald - NFL Writer
Monday, February 20th, 2012 at 10:42 am in Oakland Raiders.

Cornerback Stanford Routt agreed to terms with the Kansas City Chiefs Monday, according to multiple media outlets and first reported by ESPN’s Adam Schefter.

Routt, who will have earned $15 million with the Raiders, according to one report, will get $11 million this season and $19.3 million over three years.

The knee-jerk reaction? It means the Chiefs aren’t interested in re-signing Brandon Carr, who I’m assuming had a better year than Routt in 2011 unless he had more than 18 penalties and gave up more than eight touchdown receptions.

– Monday is the first day teams can use the franchise designation. The Raiders will keep their plans close to the vest.

“We’ll keep every option available to us open,” general manager Reggie McKenzie said through a team spokesman.

The Raiders have two prime candidates for the franchise tag _ running back Michael Bush and strong safety Tyvon Branch.

We have lived on the ‘credit card’ philosophy for FAR too long in Oakland borrowing for the future for success today, and fallen short doing so. We might go through a tough year or 2 while we get our salary’s in order but we can rest assured we are in the process of building a franchise, not a one year wonder.

    ***

    BCZ,

    you’re exactly right!! thank you

now read this again and explain to me why we should make Tyvon Branch one of the highest paid safeties in the league. our run defense sucks and our pass defense sucks. he gets a pass, but nobody else does?

we’re gonna go cheap in free agency, so Branch doesn’t really fit into that plan unless (like I said 100 times) he wants to accept a reasonable contract to stay. We aren’t getting into a bidding war over this guy. We aren’t going to tag anybody.

Dmac on a sweep to Routes side vs the queifs, can’t wait to see that. Routte will get ran the fk. Over or get a stiff arm from hell. This lil biznitch Is pulling a Marcus Allen, fk routte.

Btw, I don’t think religion has anything to do with Tebow playing QB. There are a ton of players who worship God as much/ more than Tebow, and it is considered approved/ normal behavior in sports. Why Tebow?

look at all the awful contracts on that side of the football. I’m saying if Reggie can save a few million, go ahead and whack 5 or 6 dudes and let’s move on. I don’t want to hear about “we’re only saving 500k!” or “who are we gonna get to replace him?” it’s not about that right now
    *************
It’s always about that brother, this is a business, sometimes you have to roll with bad decisions because there is no way to make it right. You can’t just cut guys and not have replacements. Yes are defense was monumentally bad last year, but that doesn’t mean the same group of guys can’t play better. A full offseason to implement a scheme, and constant coaching of that same scheme will show dramatic improvements in that squad. I trust the coaching staff to roll with THIS group of players and improve this defense by 8-10 places.

Hell look at Denver in 10 and 11, they were as equally as pathetic in 2010 as we were in 2011, they didnt gut the roster, the brought in a DC and a defensive minded
HC and played pretty damn well with minimal additions.

You get this very same group of guys a modern defensive scheme and the discipline to do what they are supposed to EVERY down, plus cut out half the penalties and you will have yourself a defense we dont spend all day complaining about.

I agree with some of the others that Mark Davis is going to just take his poison pills with Seymour, Palmer, maybe Wimbley and let go of Huff and TK. With the endgoal of being a fiscally conservative replica of Oakland A’s. They will be playing moneyball management until they feel they have the clear identity of what they will be. This is a transition year. Wait and see.

    ***

    G123,

Mark Davis isn’t involved in football operations. This is Reggie’s show. Reggie has the difficult task of getting our financial house in order with player contracts and such. He doesn’t HAVE TO keep any certain players he doesn’t want to, regardless of what thier contract states. As stated earlier, we can sew up other places to make the cap hit dissolve

Seymour has already agreed to restructure. Who knows if Palmer, Huff & Kelly will? Can’t just assume everybody thinks like Kam Wimbley or has the same contract he does …

  • YoungAmerican

Players who have been handed massive contracts and have NEVER been asked to play smart, disciplined football in return, aren’t going to react well to a new coaching staff who expects them to be professionals.

That’s why, regardless of how much it cost, Routt HAD to go.

There are still a few more players on the roster (maybe a starter or two) who will follow him out the door.

  • http://www.raiders.com Raider O

Why is it acceptable to talk about J Lin’s ethnicity/etc.. as part / reason for his hype, but not about guys like Tebow?

I don’t believe that. These guys want to win, I think Routt was all the example that they needed that undisciplined play will not be tolerated no matter how much you play. Thats why they went right after the poster child for undisciplined play on our roster.

It’s true that it’s RM’s show to make the pieces all work out, but at some point he can’t take complete discretion on the way the team spends money. It has to be ultimately approved by MD as it is his money to spend. I’m sure the 2 have met and discussed the overall strategy and it is probably a fluid one, given the pace and flow of free agent signings. They will be sitting back and let others make the splash signings and try to pickup the overlooked guys on the cheap. But I don’t see that as all on McKenzie. But I also think at some point in free agency, Mark Davis is going to be asked to seriously consider signing some guys he really didn’t think he could afford. At that point it won’t just be McKenzie.

I haven’t seen anything that suggests the big-money guys on the Raiders’ roster care about winning at all.

  • YoungAmerican

Tommy Kelly is right up there with Routt and Seymour. Thing is, Seymour played disciplined football in NE so I’m inclined to believe he can do it again.

Routt and Kelly have never had a coaching staff expect them to play with discipline. Their entire careers have been in a system where they’re protected by the owner, with no accountability.

At least Huff shows SOME desire. But when you’re making $8 million a season, desire only goes so far. He said after the season he didn’t play like an $8 million-a-year player. I expect the new regime to hold him to that. Again, he knows how many offers his agent got when he was on the free agent market.

    YA,

Kam Wimbley sure cares more about money than winning!

thats always how you know. when it comes to money.

nobody on the roster would say no if you simply asked them if they wanted to win.

However, probably half of the roster would say no if you asked them to take less money in order to do so!

A few days back there was a long post on the old school players vs the players of today. And how Al Davis didn’t understand where the culture change had shifted. Al kept going after physical specimens that he “owned” largely ignoring the leadership and love-of-the-game intangibles. That post was spot on.

All these overpaid atheletes we criticize, ask yourself would you be any different? What if you had $20M locked up and you were being asked to destroy your body for it in the hope of an elusive championship that maybe nets you another $5M? Where’s the motivation? Each player is his own seperate independent contractor. He’s a commodity as long as he’s young and healthy. These guys have no loyalty like in the Al Davis days. Guys don’t give a #### about winning anymore. It’s all about the money.

Routt does know our receivers, though…and their tendencies, strengths and weaknesses. He doesn’t need to know the Offense to know how guys play.

DMo17 was torching Routt in camp, fresh out of college as a rookie.

If anything that ‘knowledge’ will be a detriment. If he is thinking about tendencies he will get beat and/or commit a penalty

The Dolphins are not expected to use the franchise tag on free agent NT Paul Soliai.
After Soliai’s agent went on the record last week that the Dolphins never made a “fair push” to work out a long-term deal, all signs are pointing toward Soliai hitting the open market. Soliai would be due $15 million if he was tagged for the second consecutive year, a cost far too prohibitive for a team expected to switch to a 4-3 defense.

that is exactly why I feel we need to kick these self entitled losers to the street, regardless on the contract. I’ll take a bunch of young hungry kids who want to learn and are stoked about the opportunity over guys who say “I’m doing well, but those other guys need to step up”. teamwork, man. put the work in.

Jason Tarver is gonna cook up some wild things for us on Defense, man. I get the feeling it’s gonna be straight up crazy at times. We just need cats who can execute the scheme. bring in 40 undrafted kids (all defense) or whatever the max number is. I’ll take the Top 10 of them

They have a term for that, called “youngry”. It’s tough to be “youngry” and not end up being 4-12 (see TB Bucs).

I don’t like those self entitled jerks any more than you do, but the fact is they have some rare talent to be playing at the level they are and it’s obvious they put a lifetime of work into getting there. It’s just a shame to see a lot of them waste that talent once they get the big payday. Then their priority is showing up each other for who has the poshest crib, finest women, and flashiest jewlery. They get soft, but still even then they are still better than 90% of the “youngrys” so they don’t sweat it.

Trade Boss or restructure, but do not just let him walk; his salary & cap are not that bad for a starting TE.

We could get a 4th rounder for him easily; quality TE’s are a hot commodity in the NFL.

RRS when I said Denver didn’t ‘gut’ the defensive roster I meant they didnt CUT 6 or 7 STARTERS on defense. That is what I am referring to, not an influx of depth players, we need the same thing, but I dont expect us to bring in those players to START. See the difference?

Can’t believe some folks are still vouching for Routt.

Khalif Barnes had false starts but I dont remember him avg 1 per game. Still, people thought he was the scumbag on our team.

At least Huff shows SOME desire. But when you’re making $8 million a season, desire only goes so far
    **************
Not sure where this $8 mill per year myth is coming from but Huff is only making $5.6 mill this year.

2012, 2013 and 2014 Salary 4,000,000 all 3 years, the cap hit for his bonus is $1,828,750 (this bonus was paid last year and prorated over the life of the contract). So his cap hit is $5,828,750 each of the next 3 years. We would literally save $300k by cutting him, not even the league minimum for a rookie, and be forced to roll with Giordano as a 16 game starter. Not a very sound football move.

For the record, I think Curry takes a pay cut and sticks around, dont necessarily think he starts next year though.

I think we add at least one starting calibur CB, but it is going to be a bargain guy, not a top notch starter like Carr or Grimes or Finnegan.

I also think we add at least one DL who may will play a much bigger part in the rotation than Henderson did, the semi-pros thinking Buckley might be on the right track there.

Routt will do fine. We put that poor kid on an island more than any guy in the league.. The to raise the pressure we overpaid him by 5mil a yr.. Plus we gave him no help to the inside, our saftes cant cover.. And chuck b is the worst coach in the nfl..

I’m for tagging Branch ($6.2M) and buying time to negotiate a long term deal that lowers his cap hit. If the long term deal doesn’t end up happenening, $6.2 isn’t dramatically overspending as it relates to overall team budget.
