McKenzie: Expect more change

By Jerry McDonald - NFL Writer
Thursday, February 23rd, 2012 at 6:49 pm in Oakland Raiders.

Note: Managed to get a few minutes with Raiders G.M. Reggie McKenzie after the dinner hour tonight for stories on the personnel approach of the Raiders and 49ers as well as a web story which I posted below . . .

Raiders general manager Reggie McKenzie said Thursday he has been meeting with agents to talk about contracts with existing players and guessed there will be more players who are released beyond cornerback Stanford Routt.

McKenzie didn’t speak during the open media sessions at the NFL scouting combine but managed to squeeze in a few questions during the evening as he goes about remaking the personnel strategy of the Raiders.

“We’re looking at some things,’’ McKenzie said. “A lot of agents are in town, so we’re looking to sit down with some of these guys and work some things out. Without being specific, there are things we’v ego tot get done and we’re in the process of doing that now. So yes, we can expect some things to happen.’’

Included among players who could be in line for pay adjustments or release include outside linebacker Kamerion Wimbley, free safety Michael Huff, weak side linebacker Aaron Curry and defensive tackle Tommy Kelly. Releasing Wimbley and Huff would cost the Raiders $10.25 million in guaranteed money on contracts written last season.’’

McKenzie said he expected to get more out of interview sessions and medical updates than the actual physical drills, which are tests of physical skill which may not have a lot to do with football, and chuckled at the notion that the Raiders may not have the fastest player in the 40-yard dash this season.

“If he can’t play football, then no, I’m afraid not,’’ McKenzie said.

So what are the Raiders looking for?

“The combine will really just tell you what kind of athlete, not what kind of football player he is,’’ McKenzie said. “We’re not looking to grade these guys out as football players. We’re looking to grade them out on what kind of athletes they are, and medically.

“You look at that and see what they do on film, and see if that co-relates.’’

While there is speculation that McKenzie plans on making major changes in the scouting department once the draft is completed, he said the process is going smoothly for this session.

“The communication has gone very well, and the guys have been very good about adjusting to things, and myself adjusting to them,’’ McKenzie said. “We’re looking to get on the same page and that’s what we’re doing.’’

I always suspected that the Raiders had a descent scouting dept. The first round was always a disaster and the rest of the rounds were usually pretty solid. I think Uncle Al picked the first rounds.

I was hoping McKenzie didnt gut the scouting dept. We have a lot of starters from the last few drafts.

Thank god AD won’t be meddling in this year’s draft.

I have a strange feeling we are gonna be trotting out a JV team next year. Sounds like Reggie is gonna destroy and rebuild. It sucks because I think we were close to contending. however, if it leads to a championship I’m all for it.
    ==========================================
i would think it would be a year to cut salary and add cheap, but effective depth, then get trades in order for a few additional picks , with any luck it COULD end up like this

    released
    Huff
    Henderson
    Kelly
    Chris X. Johnson

    re-negotiated and or signed
    Giordano
    Desmond Bryant
    Marcell Reece
Richard Seymour (re-done to save 3-6 mil)
Aaron Curry (release is 50-50, maybe he restructures cause he “glad to be here”

    drafted
94-96 (Asomugha compensatory) Vontaze Burfect or Emmanuel Acho
110 (via trade) Josh Norman or Trumaine Johnson
130 Sean McClellin, OLB, Boise St.
    140 Marvin McNutt, WR, Iowa
    148 Nicolas Jean-Baptiste, NT, Baylor
    170 Brett Roy, DE/OLB, Nevada
240 (Howard compensatory) Richard Golden, CB, Arizona

    signed
    Jameel McClain, ILB
    Early Doucet, WR,
    Chris Myers, C
    Will Montgomery, G
    Paul Soliai, NT
William Middleton or Cortland Finnegan, CB
    Ahmad Brooks, OLB
    Jarrett Bush, S
Carlos Rogers, CB or Tracy Porter, CB

You talking to me ??? And what BS would that be ?

  • JB

    Hardline

You make a very good case comparing the two. The only difference, aside from running speed & blocking ability is potential. DMac has the potential to break a run all the way whereas Bush is not really a threat in the running game. DMac can run the edge or up the gut and does break many initial contacts. Bush on the other hand is up the gut and rarely breaks initial contacts. Receiving, I think they are comparable as you pointed out. When it comes to pass protection blocking DMac is very good, Bush either can’t or won’t. Either way, that’s unacceptable. DMac needs to play a full season to really see his value. If he doesn’t do it this year, he’ll be gone. Money wise, the are not equal in abilities & therefore not equal in earning power. I believe we can do better in FA than Bush. we’ve seen the best of Bush and it is not extraordinary.

I also agree with you that Hue’s play calling left much to be desired. On a positive note, DMac’s injuries have not been repeaters. Every injury has been something new. At least he’s not chronic on any specific injury. Maybe he’s just had some bad luck & it’s time for him to really get it going. I hope so anyway.

I agree with you. Maybe if DMAC is used correctly his performance will increase. Now wouldn’t that be stellar???

Oh no. RM does not concern me. I have the faith in him.

  • RaiderSam

My point is this: you are analyzing Bush wrongly. He was used defectively by Hue: 1, Bush up the middle, little gain; 2. Pass to DHB, dropped; 3. Bush up the middle 2 yds; 4. punt. This offensive pattern was fulfilled time and time and time again in the last 5 games, and was disgusting to me.

I think Bush is too big to be a full time starter. I don’t think Bush is great, but very, very good. I also think he shouldn’t be franchised and is maybe worth $4M per season. One thing is, I feel that in any case Bush should make the same money as DMAC earns.

Frankly speaking I would trade DMAC, since he is mainly useless against top tier teams with winning records and will never play more than 8 games per season.

What I am saying is that if you think Bush will be easy to replace, you are mistaken.

I reserve that right to Corky, and the Bay Area News Group. Plus, in that role you are so soft and weak, it just doesn’t work for you, IMO.

Other teams in the league don’t waste resources on players who can’t play; be it because of injury or skill.
    >>>>

Kinda like SD did with Drew Brees?

You don’t let go of the best player on your team regardless of anything.

Sorry… dumb idea. If he can’t finish the season this year, THEN think about letting him walk. Most draft picks are hit or miss anyway.

    ——————————————————–

Firstly, SD let go of BREES because they had RIVERS waiting in the wings. That didn’t work out too badly for them, did it?
Secondly, RB is a position that you will probably only get 2-3 great years out of the best. McFadden has already had MAJOR wear on his wheels. He’s only been healthy for 1 season thus far. You can easily find a serviceable RB via the draft or free agency for way less money. This is a QB driven league even more so now that passing offenses has become so prominent.
In closing, considering Mcfadden’s injury history and the average career span of a NFL RB, it’s not a DUMB IDEA to trade him. It may be a risky one, but it’s a calculated risk that could end up changing the fate of the franchise for the better. Remember, it’s impossible to be the best player on the team if you aren’t on the field playing on Sundays.

  • JB

    Some FA’s to consider:

    OLB – Jarret Johnson (Bal)
    OLB – Anthony Spencer (Dal)
NT – Aubrayo Franklin (NO) or
    NT – Paul Solial (Mia)
    OT – Jared Gaither (SD)
    RB – Mike Tolbert (SD)
    OC – Chris Meyers (Hou)
    WR – Marques Colston (NO)
    CB – Tracy Porter (NO)
    SS – Tyvon Branch (Oak)*

    * priority signing

I’m assuming we switch to a 3-4 D and Wimbley is cut. I can see RoMac & Curry as ILB. DE’s will be Seymour, Shaughnessy, Bryant & Moss. At NT will be new FA, backed up by Houston & possible a restructured Kelly.

It would be nice to see an O-line of Veldheer, Wiz, FA Meyers, Barksdale & FA Gaither. Starting WR FA Colston & Ford/DHB with D-Wow in the slot. TE = Boss.

Reality dictates we don’t have picks were gutting the team and scheme, we are in full rebuild mode and that means losing seasons ahead in most cases or should I say MORE losing seasons.

KC talking to Peyton Manning’s agent. Who said a franchise QB can’t make a big difference. If KC gets Manning, KC could easily be a force next year.

  • SnB offense defense specialteams

If you can pay no-contribution, no-win guys like Wimbley, Kelly, Huff, Curry a bunch of money to miss plays and give up 95 yard drives in crunch time with regularity….

    You can re-sign Bush easily

  • imaquaman

my thinking on mc fadden he runs so hard he hurts himself (obvious),but as he gets older and wiser ,and watches some tape of marcus allen maybe he realizes he can still run hard but smart .the beginning of his career he was tagged bust now hes out to prove he’s not and ends up playing 8 game seasons .when he figures out its ok if he doesnt bust every run he may last longer (marcus allen was a hard guy to hit when someone tried to lay the wood on him as soon as they dropped their head to get him by the time they got there he was a foot to the right or left or a foot short or over the top .you never saw him try to level someone with his headbone

Dont care what anyone who is negative or disses on Coach Davis has to say. Raiders are gonna be good with Dmac and Palmer and the great DMoore and DHB is comin back strong.

Raidahs will have a 1-2 punch in the backfield with Dmac and Bush. The new defensive minded HC means business and expect the sellouts to continue.

And Coach Davis’ legacy remains. He put all the pieces in order and here we go.

And if you got a problem with Mr Davis, well, get ova it. Coach has passed on, but he is still in the stadium.

What are you talking about bro? When have I said Reggie isn’t going to make any moves? None of that comes as any surprise to me. Obviously the first move is to get these guys to take pay cuts, some will be willing, some will not. Some guys you have to kind of eat their contract because there is no financial gain to cutting them (Romac). If I had to take a stab in the dark at what will happen it will look something like -

Wimbley – refuses to rework deal, cut – saves 4.5 mill
Kelly – Doesn’t seem like a guy who will play ball – Cut saves team around 3 mill
Seymour – happily reworks deal for 2 year extension, saves team 7-9 mill in cap space
Curry – tears up old Seattle contract signs new 3 year cap friendly deal – saves us roughly 3 mill in cap space
Huff – renegotiates contract saving us around 2 mill, but new deal is heavily backloaded so the Nation still freaks out that he makes too much
Palmer – restructures to a new 4 year deal worth about the same as his current 3 year deal, more cap friendly to team (saves us about 4 mill in space this year)
