Dennis Allen transcript from NFL scouting combine

By Steve Corkran
Friday, February 24th, 2012 at 11:48 am in Oakland Raiders.

Jerry McDonald is covering the NFL scouting combine in Indianapolis this week. He just attended the news conference of new Raiders coach Dennis Allen. Here is the transcript, as provided by Jerry:

Q: Raiders talking to a lot of linebackers and and D-ends at senior bowl, wimbley has contract issues, where are you with that?

Allen: I think obviously, defensively that is going to be a priority for us. I think I was really pleased with what the Raiders were able to do last year offensively. I know from having to defend against them, they were a real challenge to defend. Defensively, if you look at the defensive rankings, not too different than what the situation I came into last year with Denver. So it’s obviously a high priority for us and we’ve got to get better in that area.

Q: Where do things stand with Wimbley, Huff, players that may or may not have contract issues . . .

Allen: Right now, with all those guys, we’re looking at all our options and what we have to do from a financial standpoint to make sure we put ourselves in the best position to get the best players out there and be on our final 53-man roster. So between Reggie and myself, we’re working through all those scenarios right now.

Q: Expect more changes besides Stanford Routt?

Allen: Well, there will obviously be changes, I don’t know what those changes will be yet. Those are all the scenarios that we’re going through right now.

Q: Where are things with Bush, franchise tag candidate?

Allen: Again, we’re going to look at all those options. I won’t get into the specifics of exactly what we’re going to do and exactly what our plan is going to be, but I will tell you this, but we will look at all of our existing free agents, we’re going to look at all of our existing players that are under contract that have high numbers and we’re going to evaluate what we need to do to give the organization a chance to be successful.

Q: Excited about going up against Broncos twice a year?

Allen: I think I’m excited about going up against everybody next year. I wouldn’t single them out any differently. I obviously have a lot of respect for what they’ve done over there. I think John Elway, Brian Zanders, John Fox do a tremendous job and I know they’ll have the team ready to play whenever we go up against them and we’ll do our best to have our team ready to play going up against them.

Q: Mentioned at press conference think too much is made of 4-3, 3-4 system, have you identified a primary base defense or something working through?

Allen: Those are really all the things we’re still working through. We’ll see, after we go through free agency, after we go through the draft, which grouping gives us the best chance to be successful. I would expect that we’ll be very multiple in that regard.

Q: What can you tell us about Jason Tarver, your choice for D-coordinator?

Allen: I think Jason Tarver is an extremely bright young coach. He was a part of the San Francisco 49ers defenses, and I thought they were extremely well coached, extremely talented, when I interviewed Jason, there was no doubt in my mind that this is a guy who had answers for everything. I’m extremely excited about working with him, and I think, with him and the defensive staff as well as myself being involved in the defense, I’m excited about our opportunities.

Q: How hands on will you be with the defense?

Allen: I’ll be involved. I’ll be involved in both aspects of the team. Offense, defense, special teams, all of it. But I would say, especially this first year, I’ll probably spend a little bit more time with the defense.

Q: Thoughts on development of Rolando McClain?

Allen: He was a guy that was picked real high in the draft, and I still see a lot of talent in Rolando McClain. I got a chance to speak with him the other day. I think he’s excited about coming in, and being involved with the new regime. We’re going to give him every opportunity to prove that he’s the type of player that he’s capable of being. I think if he’s willing to come in and work and do the things we ask him to do, he’ll reach that potential.

Q: Greg Knapp’s offenses featured a lot of bootlegs, zone blocking, can Carson Palmer fit with Knapp’s scheme?

Allen: I think absolutely he can fit. And I also think that part of what we do as coaches is we have a system that we’re going to run, but we’re going to try and put our players in the best position for them to be successful. We’re not going to force-feed something if it doesn’t fit what a guy does really well, we’re not going to force-feed that. But I do think when you look at Carson Palmer, that he does have the same type of athleticism. He’s as athletic as Matt Schaub, who they had in Houston, to really be really be able to run that same package.

Q: Did you want to speak about Ed Donatell about a spot on your staff?

Allen: There are a lot of people that I considered, that I had on my list, and Ed would have been one of those guys that I had on my list, but I think once I had an opportunity to really sit down and talk to Jason, there was no question in my mind that he was the guy.

Q: When did you start getting into the draft?

Allen: Well, I spent the first couple of weeks trying to put together a coaching staff, so it was just really recently that we’ve really kind of gotten involved in the draft. We had the free agents that we had to evaluate as a coaching staff, and we’re kind of in the introductory process of getting ready for the draft.

Q: Is it less of a priority because you have so few picks?

Allen: No, I don’t think so. I told the coaching staff the other day, the most important thing that we can be doing right now is picking players, and making sure we got the right guys on our team, and so the offensive scheme, the defensive scheme, that’s going to take care of itself, but we’ve got to make sure we’ve got the right guys to be a part of this football team, so there’s nothing more important to us right now than making sure we get the right guys.

Q: How is McFadden’s foot, any chance he wouldn’t be back next year?

Allen: Not as far as I’m concerned. I think he’s an extremely dynamic player. Again, from playing the Oakland Raiders twice last year, they were much more challenging to defend when Darren McFadden was in the backfield, and having that kind of two-headed monster between him and Bush, that was a real challenge. Darren is a vital part of what we’re going to try and get done next year.

Q: Is his foot better?

Allen: Yes, his foot is better. He was back in town, working out last week, and we got a good evaluation on him. Darren will be ready to go whenever we get ready to kick off the season, that’s for sure.

Q: McFadden chronic foot problems, anything organization has looked at, practice fields, etc.?

Allen: We’re looking at everything within the organization, how we can improve in every aspect of the organization, and obviously practice fields is one of the things that we’re looking at. Is there something we can do to improve that, and is their a correlation between the foot injuries and the practice fields. If we can deduce there is a correlation between the two we’ll do everything we can to get them right.

Q: Matt Shaughnessy, Jacoby Ford, they’re good to go?

Allen: Absolutely, they’ll be ready to roll.

Q: Routt gone, any chance Huff is a corner?

Allen: Again, that question is to be determined after we find out exactly who we have on the team to find out what are options are. The one thing do I do know about Michael Huff is he’s an extremely good athlete and he has skills athletically of a corner, and so that obviously would be an option for us, but again, we won’t make any decisions along those lines until we know exactly what we got.

Q: How would you describe first couple of months on the job? Anything unexpected, surprises?

Allen: Fast. Fast. Well, I think one of the things that you find out as a head football coach is that it’s difficult to put together a good staff, because there’s a lot of guys that you might want to try to get that you can’t get out of other contracts and different roadblocks and hurdles that you got to jump over, but I think we weathered that storm and the one thing that I wanted to make sure that we did, was I didn’t want to rush into anything or hurry into anything, and I think having that patience allowed us to put together a good staff.

Q: Performance of offensive line last year part of the reason Steve Wisniewski was retained, for continiuity?

Allen: Yeah, I think keeping some of that continuity within the offensive line. I think there was an element there that we wanted some people that did have some knowledge of the Raiders organization and the way that things have been done in the past, and I think he’s obviously, I wouldn’t say he’s a bright young coach, but I’d say he’s a bright and up and coming coach and I was really impressed with him when I met him for the very first time.

Q: Raiders of past reputation for putting emphasis on speed. What’s your feeling on where 40 time fits into player evaluation?

Allen: It only fits after we find out whether this guy on tape when we look at him, if we feel like he’s a good football player. That’s where 40 times come into effect. If you got two guys that when you look at the tape, these guys are about the same football playing wise, well let’s take the faster guy. But we’re not going to take guys just because they run real fast. Because that doesn’t co-relate to being a good football player.

Q: How much of the team do you think you’ve actually spoken to, guys under contract?

Allen: I’ve probably spoken to about 75 percent of the team, and I think everybody is really excited about getting in and getting started and being a part of the offseason program and being a part of what we’re going to try and do and how we’re going to be a little bit different.

Q: Seymour part of long-term plan?

Allen: We’ve spoken with Richard, and he’s excited about the opportunity, and Richard is obviously part of our plans and we feel real good about Richard.

Q: Penalties such a big issue, how clear that up?

Allen: I think the first and foremost thing is guys have to be held accountable for their actions. That’s always what I believed in, and I think now with the organizational structure I feel about our ability to hold our guys accountable to do the right things, for the right reasons and doing it that way all the time. And we’ll preach that message and preach that message, and we’ll hold guys accountable to doing it the right way.

Q: How have you and Reggie worked together putting things together?

Allen: First and foremost, I think our relationship has been outstanding. We’ve discussed every situation that comes up, we’ve always discussed it. I’ve come to him with questions about coaching staff, he’s come to me with questions about personnel issues, and I think that’s the way you run a top quality organization, when your head coach and your general manager can see eye to eye, and can have conversations, and we might not always agree, but at the end of the day we’ve got to make sure we can come to the best decision for the Raiders and that’s what I’m excited about working with Reggie, because he’s a top quality human being and I think he’s an excellent talent evaluator.

if the knicks want to win, they better sit lin and start barron davis

lin had his 15 minutes its over

Can’t agree with ya there my dude. Though I was raised in KY; I’m actually a life-long Knick fan, and seeing what Lin brings to the table (which isn’t amazing, but works for us) and his savvy-ness off the pick and roll which is perfect with Antoni’s (No D) system; I like his chances a lot more than I like Baron’s. Now, was Baron better in his hey-day? By far. But today’s a new day. I live in SoCal now and have for the past half decade so I’ve seen the Baron the Clipps got from the W’s. He isn’t the same guy. He either doesn’t want to play the right way and isn’t fully engaged, or he wants to play the right way but his body won’t let him. Baron will be cool off the bench, and anything he gives the Knicks is a bonus 4real4real.

The best thing for Baron to do now is share stories with fellow old head broke-down body buddy Mike Bibby on the bench on how the Pac-10 used to be a decent basketball conference. No, the Knicks aren’t going to win the East with Lin, but they wouldn’t with Baron either. That has a lot to do with Antoni (No D) coaching, and all the possessions they take off on defense, but that’s a different story. Lin will get ‘em out the first round this year and Knick fans need to be content with that with our recent history. Miami makes a lot of guards look horrible; not just Lin. Baron was 0 for 8 last night too….

HUGE NEWS OUT OF THE BEEECH DAWG CAMP

Yo blog brahs, goobers & assorted dweebos

    Oh and you too, Krappy

After a week of meetings with my all star production team, the Certified Platinum Posse, smoking almost a pound of Santa Cruz skunk weed and snapping the springs in the PARTYDUDE 8000 from overuse, I have a major announcement:

I am going to back to my reggae roots and starting a side project called Rasta Ganja.

    Peace out, Mon, to Jamaica.

Of course I will continue recording and mass marketing my upcoming hip hop release Wrecks N Effect, so don’t run into the bathroom crying just yet

I’ve been rehearsing in the penthouse all week and am getting dread lock extensions this afternoon. I’m also trying to smoke more weed but my lips are getting chapped and I just ran out of Tiger Balm.

So let me run and take a watery dump and then I’ll hit you back with some sweet new Rasta Ganja lyrics

    =======================

    classic overreaction

he proved that he can play, but he also proved he cant be a starting point guard, * the reason is simple.

He plays no defense and turns the ball over, averaging 6 turn overs a game.

Turn overs from the point guard will lose game for you in the play offs.

Davis should start, he will protect the ball and spread the ball to the play makers. The amount of minutes he plays can be near even with lin, but barron should start.

  20. SilverAndBlackBleeder Says:

Looks like Seymour and McFadden will definitely be back.

And it’s sad that after all the corners Al has taken over the recent years, our top priority in this year’s draft once again is another cornerback… with interior D-line running a close 2nd…

  21. Just Fire Baby Says:

Jeremy Lin is getting unprecedented scrutiny, both good or bad.

Has a good week, he is an All-Star and on magazine covers.

Has a bad game, coming off a back-to-back night, on the road against the best defensive team this league has seen since the early 2000 Pistons, and he can’t play.

Can we get a little perspective here? The guy can play, is clearly not athletic enough to be an elite player, and will probably settle as a really good backup PG in the NBA.

I had my policy cancelled by citizens over a small claim and then flipped for more than double the cost. Went from $2k to $5k at renewal time. Citizens isn’t the only insurer, but is probably the largest. I got my rates down to $2.7k, but only by increasing the deductibles, lowering the insured value to appraisal value, and declining hurricane and sink hole coverage.

But you are right, the insurance companies are sleazy in Florida and are always cutting out coverage and increasing rates to pay for past damage. That’s why Citizens is almost last man standing. It’s gotten to the point that insurance is worthless in FL, but required for the mortgage. If I ever pay off my home, I’m going insurance free.

1New Oakland coach Dennis Allen indicated that the running back will be part of the team’s plans moving forward. There has been speculation McFadden could be traded in an attempt for Oakland to recoup draft picks. The Raiders have very few picks this year.

“As far as I’m concerned he is,” Allen said Friday when asked if McFadden is in Oakland’s future plans.

The former Denver defensive coordinator said the Raiders were “much more” difficult to defend last season when McFadden was in the lineup. McFadden was lost for the season on Oct. 23 with a foot injury. Allen said Friday that McFadden is healthy and will be ready for training camp.

The Raiders are planning to move back to a zone-blocking scheme. However, McFadden appeared to be more comfortable as a power runner. Allen said new Oakland offensive coordinator Gregg Knapp — who was Oakland’s coordinator in McFadden’s first NFL season in 2008 — will put McFadden in position to be successful. Thus, expect the offense to be flexible enough to cater to McFadden’s skills.

Because of the commitment to McFadden, it could be an indication the team will not give the franchise tag to running back Michael Bush. Safety Tyvon Branch is a candidate for the tag as well. Allen was complementary of Bush on Friday, but he did not say what the team’s plans are with any potential free agents.

I will come back with more thoughts on Allen’s news briefing later Friday.

  35. Just Fire Baby Says:

Last years top 4 in turnovers?

Westbrook, Lebron, Dwight Howard, Derrick Rose

Lin needs to clean it up no doubt, but shaving 2 turnovers a game won’t mean much to his career, if he isn’t scoring 20 a night.

  36. RaiderRockstar Says:

Q: Is it less of a priority because you have so few picks?

Allen: No, I don’t think so. I told the coaching staff the other day, the most important thing that we can be doing right now is picking players, and making sure we got the right guys on our team, and so the offensive scheme, the defensive scheme, that’s going to take care of itself, but we’ve got to make sure we’ve got the right guys to be a part of this football team, so there’s nothing more important to us right now than making sure we get the right guys.

Exactly..I’m a Knick fan and I can easily admit I’ll take 15 point guards ahead of him, and he’s a backup on a solid team, but since my Knicks are terrible, I wouldn’t want anyone else out there with the crew. Hell, he’s kept Jared Jeffries employed and is probably gonna get Landry Fields severely overpaid when his next contract is up. Gotta love how the team obviously shows a tremendous increase in effort when he’s on the floor simply off the kid’s will to win. But again, the Heat make A LOT of people look bad; especially when they’re focused and locked in on shutting perimeter players down and not taking off defensive possessions…..ask D.Rose about last year’s conf. finals and he’ll tell ya…

I think he’s excited about coming in, and being involved with the new regime. We’re going to give him every opportunity to prove that he’s the type of player that he’s capable of being. I think if he’s willing to come in and work and do the things we ask him to do, he’ll reach that potential.

I don’t low-ball him like a lot of people in here are wanting, but I don’t break the piggy bank either. Double his current salary to bring the avg yearly amount to around 5+, but offer the guy something like 4-5 years and backload the last two years to like 7 or 8M per year and if he regresses after 2, cut him or force him to restructure; but he’s definitely worth the increase in pay. If he won’t take that, we gotta accept it, but he’ll definitely get an offer of at least 6M for 3 years somewhere else, so we have to add on some years to give him the incentive and act like we respected what he did to make him want to stay for what might be smaller pay-days the first couple of years in hopes of an even bigger pay-day if he does his thing.

Simply my opinion. I don’t think Underwood immediately addresses our weaknesses there, and the youngsters haven’t even proven they can get on the field 100% for two weeks in a row; let alone compete. I simply think we’ll be looking for another starting corner. I honestly want us to address the interior d-line and LBs though, so if thats the way we go, more power to that movement. But considering I think they’re also gonna cut Huff; it’s looking grim at corner unless we just plan on outscoring people and letting our defensive backfield be responsible for giving up 28+ a game….

And Kiffin’s quote about playing a rival:

“We keep it the same. Am I going to look at this in a different way because they happen to be a rivalry? No. In my opinion, it wouldn’t be fair to the team because when you go play Cleveland the next week, you’re not going to try?”

I hope Allen doesn’t learn what Kiffin learned the hard way. It might be a new regime here but for our rivals its still “Raider Week”.

    Lin’s defense is suspect indeed.
    ————-

It sure is but you can’t ahve it all. Only a very few special guys like Kobe, Lebron or Jordan have it all. Stockton and Nash were prob not top tier defensively either. They just make up for it on quick hands and steals. Bottom line, the kid is 23 and barely got enough experience in the league. He will improve and be a starting pg in this league for a long time. The problem with a lot of non-black guards in the NBA is that they can shoot lights out but they can’t penetrate (JJ Reddick, Jimmer, and all those Euro guys). Where Lin is successful is that he can penetrate. I believe that has been the key thing that made the Knicks better and the Warriors worst since BD. When Baron Davis was here, he penetrated and made role players like Barnes better with the 3point spot up.

  177. RaiderWeaponX Says:

    174. Doubt TP gets to do that with the Raiders especially if they go and stay West Coast Offense. If TP doesn’t change postion he’ll likely be ditched.

    ————-

you must not have read the rest of my post…Being a Knick fan myself, I know Lin is the best option we have out there at point and know all too well that you can’t have it all. And yes, he is every bit of 6′3 200 even though he doesn’t look it, and that serves him very well when he gets deep in the lane. The kid is a player….he folded last night, but again for the 76 millionth time, the Heat make a lot of people look bad. Not just Lin.

Seymour & Kelly at DT wasn’t good, but the major problem was consistency. Morrison never had any talent at the DT position. He played with guys like Sands, Warren, Joseph, Boschetti, Brayton, etc. He didn’t have base DE’s like Bryant, ShoNasty & Houston. He had pass rushers like Scott, Ellis & Burgess. He didn’t have OLB’s like Wimbley & Curry. He played next to guys like Williams, Thomas, Brown, Howard & Alston.

If we are laying down money in Vegas on Palmer’s being succesful v. unsucceful, you are betting on him being unsuccessful? I understand you are just preparing the nation for the let down you see coming.

Just as you took delight in calling out the JC haters once he started being succesful in the silver and black?

You have style Dutch, that was eloquent, but wildly presumptuous. Saying palmer is under the microscope, isnt predicting failure, and nothing to do with JC at all. I am only accepting reality, & in my mind admission of palmers pizz poor play naturally progresses toward skepticism about his ability to play well in the future. The desire to see palmer prove it on the field should not be confused with pessimism.

Actually I veiw palmer as nothing more than a stop gap. If he flops or succeeds, it will have no impact on my optimism for the future prospects of my team. i like where big mack is taking us, palmer is merely a hitch hiker soon to be dropped off.

    =================================

Translation: Even his mom and dad, errr, “production team” thought his work sucked ass, so he scraped up some stems and seeds, did a bong load, and passed out listening to some crappy white reggae.

Alright boys, I am cutting out early. Maybe the boy child will go to the park with me and toss the ball around. If not, maybe the girl child will. I know my big (and I mean BIG) yellow lab will….

Plunk: Jared Veldher or LilWiz. I like Satele too, man is a warrior. JLofty likes warrior boar hunters. When 3×4 makes the roster as a starter and starts laying out WRs and RBs like Luke Skywalker fulfilling his destiny, then maybe MM.

    ^^^^^^^^
I love Satele as well. I think he is under appreciated.

I think he will stay with the move back to the ZBS mainly. Veldheer, Wiz and Satele are solid.

The question is if old Cooper stays. I think Cooper is gone….especially if Campbell and or Barksdale take over on the right side of the line.

I think Barksdale can play either RG or RT, even in a ZBS. It seems Campbell is more of a RT….

I think the Raiders should replace the image on their helmets. I vote for the picture of Al Davis at the owners meeting with “Lance”.

  351. Richard Bentley Says:

It’s true when you’re a company man you always give a company answer (witness Allen’s and Reggie’s), but I have a sense that the Raiders are building a chain of command with delegation of authority and open communication both ways without the insane micromanagement of the last several years of Al’s reign. Even with that, there’s probably going to be too much shuffling players in and out and adjustments for the Raiders to make the playoffs the first year. The culture has to change and the players that don’t buy in have to be gotten rid of. But the second year will have a much more competitive, disciplined team that will make a run. Even though the division is weak, the rest of the teams will improve and are ahead of schedule relative to the Raiders. But the sun is shining through the clouds again.

Moreover, he does not bring the lumber when hitting. A lot of arm tacking with this guy.

Reggie ran around with his head cut off, clueless. Some of the same posters here who called him clueless and dancing around like little kids, stating how great he’s doing, even though all he did was wait while all the experienced coaches were taken. Now we have an inexperienced owner, with an inexperienced gm, with an inexperienced head coach.

Wonder how those Daivs haters who love the new regime are going to feel when we don;t make the playoffs for another couple of years.
    ———————————————–
We’re happy that there is an emerging, coherent system in place with professional contract management and talent evaluation. Given that Davis was never going to another Super Bowl, let alone winning the conference, I think the sane and rational among us are willing to give the new regime the benefit of the doubt so long as yearly progress is being made. But I hold them accountable just as I did Davis. And, by the way, even under the best of circumstances it’ll take 3 years to rebuild this sorry ass defense.

Nothing takes 3 yrs. to rebuild anymore if u do it right. Not when expansion teams (like Carolina) make it to the NFC Championship game their second yr.

NE and GB did pretty well for themselves with bad D’s this yr.

That transcript of Dennis Allen is the furthest thing from a total “rebuild” stance that we’ve seen so far.

Whether they DO win or not this yr. remains to be seen, but i dont think Mark wants to go 4-12 under any circumstances…rebuild or not.

Losing (even in the short term) does not help his case with getting a new stadium, which he has stated is a priority. In fact it’s one of the only priorities he’s even mentioned publicly.

Does it help his cause to have only 30,000 people in the stands for home games and to be a league bottom feeder again?

You can tell alot by how he answers the ?’s.

If he is gushing about a player, it’s a good sign he’s in the plans.

If a guy might be out, he’ll say something like: “Well, we are looking at that situation”. Or be evasive by saying “Well, I think we just want the best players at every position” etc. etc.

As one poster noted, he seemed to hedge a bit in regard to Huff..slightly, but not sure how someone took anything Allen said to suggest Seymour would not be around.

Doesn’t sound like a complete “gutting” or “rebuild” to me.

Reggie ran around with his head cut off, clueless. Some of the same posters here who called him clueless and dancing around like little kids, stating how great he’s doing, even though all he did was wait while all the experienced coaches were taken.
