Raiders generate intrigue if not buzz

Waiting for my flight out of Indianapolis, and after four days of working at the NFL scouting combine, it’s clear a lot of people are intrigued to see how the Raiders operate in the post-Al Davis era.

Raiders general manager Reggie McKenzie and and coach Dennis Allen kept a low profile, with McKenzie declining to talk at the podium (although we spoke on the record Thursday night) and Allen speaking at the same time there was a packed house for Baylor quarterback Robert Griffin III on the other side of the room.

There’s a lot of shop talk and informal conversation that goes on in Indianapolis in the restaurants and watering holes around town, both with fellow media members from other cities as well as scouts, coaches and front office people from other teams _ moreso than at any other NFL event I can think of.

Most everyone is interested to see how the Raiders fare. They’ve never operated before as a “normal” organization and that is what McKenzie and Allen are attempting to foster.

Regarding McKenzie, seldom is heard a discouraging word. By acclimation, McKenzie is considered a solid talent evaluator, a straight shooter and a person of integrity. It’s clear he has a plan, and he’s not going to be concerned about making difficult choices on the roster if it means getting the club’s financial house in order and changing the chemistry on the team.

Allen is harder to figure, because his track record is so limited with one year as a coordinator.

But there really were only two reactions gathered on the Raiders’ new coach during my time here.

Either people know very little about him, or they’re very impressed. Almost nothing in between. Some people wonder about the hire simply because of his experience level, but they concede they’re speaking from that frame of reference only and know little to nothing about the man.

Those people that have had some experience with Allen almost unanimously think he will be a terrific head coach. I didn’t talk to a single person who has dealt with Allen or has some knowledge of how he operates who gave it a thumbs down. Not overly surprising, I guess, considering how fast he climbed the NFL ladder.

In terms of draft buzz, it’s hard to generate any of that when barring a trade, the best they can do is No. 97 if they get the best available compensatory pick. Projecting who could be fifth and sixth round picks as a futile exercise, although it should be noted one of McKenzie’s strengths _ considering how Green Bay operated _ is finding qualities players in those rounds.

Gotta board now . . . counting on taking a week off next week . . .

    Global warming is a myth?!

No. No educated person or society believes that. But if you are Jamista Clown and the conservatives, you are living in the 1500’s. Think I am kidding? The conservatives want to get rid of Child Labor Laws. Nothing like 9 year olds working 16 hours a day in coal mines….

  • O, when you decide if climate change is a natural occurrence or caused by man can you please let us know? If you need more phony science saying it is man caused there are plenty of left wing websites that will provide that for you.

Hey everybody. Finally got the internet hooked back up (wifey didn’t pay the bill) so I decided I’d drop on in and say hey. So damned excited what the Raiders are doing I can’t stand it. Though I loved the late Mr. Davis dearly, I like what is happening now. So many people were down on what Mr Davis had done, but let me tell ya’ll something ya may not have reckoned with. Right now this organization is poised to come out firin at the bell and it just goes to show you what Mr Davis did to leave this world and his organization in great shape. He had all the pieces in place at his passing and we are poised baby, on the brink of greatness. Mr Davis’ legacy was in tact when he left us. He new what he was doing up to the moment he passed on. Mark Davis is quite competent and had one hell of a mentor in his father (and btw, Mr Silver can suck blue balls). The organization was not that far off when Mr Davis left us and just look how close we are right now. I like the new head coach and the general manager. And they all know not only are they reloading the Raiders, but they are respectfully bound to the legacy of Mr Davis and the Silver and Black. They are picking up where Mr Davis left off and in his honor, gonna keep the fighting spirit alive. I know big things are gonna happen this upcoming season. Good things are gonna happen. Sell outs will continue. We are gonna see Raider football to the likes Mr Davis would be proud. May God rest Al Davis’ soul and all the best to the new management at the helm.
Quite an interesting take on what is clearly a complete repudiation of Al’s “system.” Some people just believe what they want to believe.

  • According to…..

  • hendu

RaiderOOOOO,Whats up?Raiders going to trade up or sign free agents,or BOTH?

  • Hendu,

Whats up brother? Those 2 guys argue more than a married couple. I don’t think we need to get involved.

  • hendu

Raider O,You trade DMac for picks?I would like to keep him,but if the price is right,?

  • Hendu,

Reggie said he wants to implement a system similar to GB’s. The only big name FA GB signed the last decade (as I remember) was C Woodson. I don’t think we will sign any big name FAs, but I have a FA wish list (just in case).
I think they will try to reload the defense and add depth to the entire team by signing 2nd & 3rd tier FAs, draft a few more, and sign a lot of URFAs.

  • I would not trade DMAC. He is the best player on offense (when he is healthy), and he is a threat to score every time he touches the ball. I understand we lack draft picks, and that’s the best way to rebuild/ reload, but I’m not willing to trade our best player for an unproven player who may end up being a bust, injury prone, etc…

  • hendu

Raider O,agree, but what about DMac if youre the GM,trade him for picks or not?

  • hendu

    219,answered by Raider O

  • Hendu,

Also, we are in no position to try to compete for big name FAs like Carr, Williams, C Nicks, etc. we are over the Cap, so we still have to release/ restructure a few contracts to get under the cap.

  • hendu

Raider O,Cork insists no worries regarding the cap, hope Hes right.Would love to have a stud linebacker and cover corner,in that order,You?

  • Al Davis gave huge/ ridiculous contracts:
    Seymour: $15 million
    Routt: $10-11
    Wimbley: $11
    Huff: $8
That’s $45 million to 4 players. That was more than 35% of the entire salary cap. That wouldn’t be a problem, If those players produced at an elite/ high level since they were paid like it.

  • YoungAmerican

OLB Ahmad Brooks would be a solid pickup, depending on how the rest of the roster shakes out. If the Raiders intend on emphasizing 3-4 defensive sets, Brooks would give them an option at OLB across from Wimbley.

  • hendu

    O,sorry my friend,kids and Pizza have arrived,take care,RAIDERS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • I like Cork a lot, but he is very opinionated. He said in his live chats that DHB should be the 6th WR on the depth chart, and he was the most productive WR last season.
I understand his point about not losing players (you want to keep) due to the salary cap, but that doesn’t mean the salary cap issues are a myth.

DE, CB, and OLB. I want Houston to move inside, and I think Matt S is a better fit at LE, so we need to add a RDE, a CB that can cover without having 18 penalties, and we need an OLB who is not a liability in coverage. A NT would be nice too.

  • Later Hendu.

  • Gooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooogle

    Howdy doody ya’ll.

Those of you who think we should trade McFadden you’re out of your mind!!

  • Randy Moss can run a 4.3 40 at the age of 35 ( according to NFLN).

I wish there were more things to keep my interest during the offseason.

I love all sports, but not like football.

    It’s a diversion.

    Not always a pleasent one.

My fellow Raider fans know what i’m talking about.

  • djohnnyg

Why is it so many good/great players come to Oakland and suck?

Moss hardly even tried when he was here. Sapp?. The list can go on and on.

How about Seymour? He might have been “ok” for awhile but nowhere near what we hoped for or what his resume suggested we’d get.

  • PlunkforHOF

Holy Moly girls! That was AWESOME!.. In round 2 there will be no more purses swinging at each other..

Round 2 will only be windmill-type sissified slap-fighting..

My bro in law brought up a good point today. He wondered since Carson Palmer left Cincy like he did how excited will he be under a Raider “rebuild” if there’s gonna be no expectations of winning a SB here anytime soon.

    A fair ?.

I would tell him the expectations of winning a SB in a “reload” year are huge. Harbaugh and the chokeaniners almost did it with a retread QB. We can do better.

  • PlunkforHOF

Word.. all aaaaaa’s.. I think the thing I’m most excited about is RMK’s evaluation of not only the draft, but the current roster.. There is gonna be some schit comin down… Can’t wait to see what it is.

    Go Reggie!
    Go Raiders!

  • djohnnyg

That’s what I basically said; that my opinion is they are gonna keep the offense intact and fix up the D as best they can and we should compete.

He’s a Packer fan from Wisconsin and doesn’t really follow the Raiders anyway, but always liked Palmer as a QB.

He thinks Palmer can be great, but he thinks Palmer wants to win now.

Imo, Carson has expressed that to Reggie and Dennis and I would assume they have assured them they will do all they can to make it happen.

Yo nerds, just had an outrageous Oscar party at the penthouse, the Beeech Dawgettes throw one every year.

It’s kinda gay but I always end up scamming on their stripper friends so it’s worth it for my weiner if I make an appearance.

When Streep won I was getting my nob (the aforementioned weiner) slobbed by a Polynesian porn star in my bathtub. Talk about Head & Shoulders.

Now that most of the beaver has moved into my bedroom for an all lesbo orgy, I’m finally able to work on some new jams with the Certified Platinum Posse.

Will be dropping some hot lyrics tonight from my new reggae side project Rasta Ganja.

    Yo, I ain’t straight trippin’

    * I mean assured Palmer they are gonna try to win THIS YEAR.

I know there has to be some dropping of a few overpriced lame-o’s, but no big loss imo.

You bet thats a good question. But if he blows off this chance, what are his prospects in the NFL? On the other hand, he leads a “rebuilding” team to the playoffs this year behind a young Oline, young promising receivers and keeps the questionable defense off the field, well then what?..

Well Arena League Football starts Friday. We have the San Jose Sabercats! Gonna be a slow next couple of weeks for the NFL. Indy keeps Manning by offering him an ownership stake in lieu of his 28 million bonus. Seem plausible? Stranger things have happened.

Just finished jamming with Rasta Ganja, our drummer is trying to quit so we’ve fired up the PARTYDUDE 8000 for a margarita meeting.

The current dude has dreds so he looks the part but has no idea how to play and cries in fear when a song starts.

So in order for us to have the worldwide success my wiener deserves, will probably have to buy a drum machine from Guitar Center. Probably how Led Zeppelin got so famous.

Check out a few lyrics from my hot new joint “Gettin’ High on Marijuana Grass”

Again tonight this blog is preposterous: it’s meant to be a public forum, a marketplace of ideas and information to be discussed in any manner, especially a manner that is obnoxious to most here.

Master Beeecham, PlunkforHOF, and Djohnnyg are all hollering now so at least the blog is stable. But before you had Mista Brown, Seymour Bush, and Hindu (a weak multi-phasic simpleton-like-creature who comes and goes and has no original thinking whatsoever).

Now last time I was on Hindu attempted to attack me personally, which was a total joke, and Seymour Bush took his back. I told them both that if they called me a troll they better be able to prove it with fact or they would both be staring at a Summons and Complaint for defamation.

I suggest if a poster wants to mount a personal attack do so against a team, GM, player or coach. Otherwise our universe here breaks down into something 10 times worse than it was before Corky cleaned it up.

If I were Corky, and those who engaged in personal attacks against other posters continued, I would shut the blog down.

    Peace….later…..I am out….
