Raiders generate intrigue if not buzz

Waiting for my flight out of Indianapolis, and after four days of working at the NFL scouting combine, it’s clear a lot of people are intrigued to see how the Raiders operate in the post-Al Davis era.

Raiders general manager Reggie McKenzie and and coach Dennis Allen kept a low profile, with McKenzie declining to talk at the podium (although we spoke on the record Thursday night) and Allen speaking at the same time there was a packed house for Baylor quarterback Robert Griffin III on the other side of the room.

There’s a lot of shop talk and informal conversation that goes on in Indianapolis in the restaurants and watering holes around town, both with fellow media members from other cities as well as scouts, coaches and front office people from other teams _ moreso than at any other NFL event I can think of.

Most everyone is interested to see how the Raiders fare. They’ve never operated before as a “normal” organization and that is what McKenzie and Allen are attempting to foster.

Regarding McKenzie, seldom is heard a discouraging word. By acclimation, McKenzie is considered a solid talent evaluator, a straight shooter and a person of integrity. It’s clear he has a plan, and he’s not going to be concerned about making difficult choices on the roster if it means getting the club’s financial house in order and changing the chemistry on the team.

Allen is harder to figure, because his track record is so limited with one year as a coordinator.

But there really were only two reactions gathered on the Raiders’ new coach during my time here.

Either people know very little about him, or they’re very impressed. Almost nothing in between. Some people wonder about the hire simply because of his experience level, but they concede they’re speaking from that frame of reference only and know little to nothing about the man.

Those people that have had some experience with Allen almost unanimously think he will be a terrific head coach. I didn’t talk to a single person who has dealt with Allen or has some knowledge of how he operates who gave it a thumbs down. Not overly surprising, I guess, considering how fast he climbed the NFL ladder.

In terms of draft buzz, it’s hard to generate any of that when barring a trade, the best they can do is No. 97 if they get the best available compensatory pick. Projecting who could be fifth and sixth round picks as a futile exercise, although it should be noted one of McKenzie’s strengths _ considering how Green Bay operated _ is finding qualities players in those rounds.

Gotta board now . . . counting on taking a week off next week . . .

    #230,

Why is it so many good/great players come to Oakland and suck?

Moss hardly even tried when he was here. Sapp?. The list can go on and on.

How about Seymour? He might have been “ok” for awhile but nowhere near what we hoped for or what his resume suggested we’d get.

    ==========================

because, teams have developed anchor players via the draft and had interchangeable personnel, while the Raiders havent established any “anchor” free agents or draft picks since Gannon-Charles Woodson days.

Baltimore – Ray Lewis/Ed Reed, Ray Rice/Joe Flacco
New England – Tom Brady/Matt Light, Vince Wilfork/back in the day; Ty Law
San Diego – Phillip Rivers/Vincent Jackson Merriman/Eric Weddle
    Indianapolis – Manning/J.Saturday, Dwight Freeney/Gary Brackett
Blitzburgh – Troy Polamalu/James Harrison, Ben Rothlisberger/Mike Wallace

us – JaMarcus Russell/Jason Campbell/Darren McFadden 1/2 a season, Richard Seymour at end of career, two backs of gum and a box of crayons (Maybe Tyvon Branch, i guess?

I mean, you have to hit in the draft, develop players, win, and add more players to your system.

Davis’ meddling and coaching turnover with a delicious layer of losers coming in to cash checks that had rings already was a ready made disaster.

Just finished jamming with Rasta Ganja, our drummer is trying to quit so we’ve fired up the PARTYDUDE 8000 for a margarita meeting.

The current dude has dreds so he looks the part but has no idea how to play and cries in fear when a song starts.

So in order for us to have the worldwide success my wiener deserves, will probably have to buy a drum machine from Guitar Center. Probably how Led Zeppelin got so famous.

Check out a few lyrics from my hot new joint “Gettin’ High on Marijuana Grass”

Hey everybody. Finally got the internet hooked back up (wifey didn’t pay the bill) so I decided I’d drop on in and say hey. So damned excited what the Raiders are doing I can’t stand it. Though I loved the late Mr. Davis dearly, I like what is happening now. So many people were down on what Mr Davis had done, but let me tell ya’ll something ya may not have reckoned with. Right now this organization is poised to come out firin at the bell and it just goes to show you what Mr Davis did to leave this world and his organization in great shape. He had all the pieces in place at his passing and we are poised baby, on the brink of greatness. Mr Davis’ legacy was in tact when he left us. He new what he was doing up to the moment he passed on. Mark Davis is quite competent and had one hell of a mentor in his father (and btw, Mr Silver can suck blue balls). The organization was not that far off when Mr Davis left us and just look how close we are right now. I like the new head coach and the general manager. And they all know not only are they reloading the Raiders, but they are respectfully bound to the legacy of Mr Davis and the Silver and Black. They are picking up where Mr Davis left off and in his honor, gonna keep the fighting spirit alive. I know big things are gonna happen this upcoming season. Good things are gonna happen. Sell outs will continue. We are gonna see Raider football to the likes Mr Davis would be proud. May God rest Al Davis’ soul and all the best to the new management at the helm.

So who else is gonna get the axe?? Let’s lay out the predictions with the losers buying the beers all day on St. Patty’s day!

Here’s my prediction of who gets cut:

    Hiram Eugene
    John Henderson
    Aaron Curry
    Mike Huff
    Kam Wimbley

I hope the bottom 3 restructure but if they don’t, that’s the way I see it.

Lechler will be restructuring as well.

  • Just Fire Baby

I believe Henderson and Wimbley will be cut, Curry and Huff will restructure, and the only FA from our team we resign will be Branch and Reece.

  • bcz24

I think Reece will only get a tender offer though. Maybe a 2nd rounder, so if another team wants him thats what they give us. Thats a cheap way to get and will give us more leeway to resign Branch

    CW,

my list is almost the same. I’ll just add a few and not take anythign away. I think Mike Mitchell & CJ37 may face the knife. Seymour already agreed to restructure or he’d be on my list. I think Kelly will either restructure, be cut or traded.

I don’t see Lechler doing anything to help the new regime, but maybe Carson Palmer reworking his contract.

  • Just Fire Baby

Players hate those one-year tenders though.

But I can see why we would do it, and at least slap that on him, and than maybe talk contract afterwards.

And how does that tender work? Is it based off position like the franchise tag?

And couldn’t we just franchise Reece? I can’t imagine the top 5 highest paid FB’s make anything of significance salary-wise.

  • RaiderRockstar

the only FA from our team we resign will be Branch and Reece

meh. I’ll take Bryant, Cartwright, Giordano & Satele (in addition to Reece)

make Jason Campbell, Michael Bush & Tyvon Branch reasonable “take it or leave it” offers.

We’ll win the same number of games without them

  • Just Fire Baby

Forgot about Des Bryant. He is an absolute must re-sign.

I like Cartwright, but I don’t think he is THAT THAT important, and our needs for leadership under this new regime aren’t as dire.

I think they’ll give MM34 a shot to prove himself, forgot about CJ37, how much is he due? I think he’ll be sent packing as well and replaced in free agency.

Lechler is in the last year of his deal and he’s owed like 5 mil? Kelly I think is kept for 2012 and then they’ll part ways. Can only dump so many guys this year.

  • Just Fire Baby

    He won’t go to Denver.

He will go to a dome team or a warm-weather place.

Denver is going to ride with Tebow next year, I am pretty confident in that.

    *****************
There is no Franchise Tag for FBs, they are classed under the RB tag, so we wouldn’t go that right.

Restricted FA offers are not position based, the contract costs are only based on the ’round’ you tender them at:

First round – contract is roughly 2 mill (there is no more 1st and 3rd tender)
    Second round – 1.5mill roughly
Original round – essentially pays veteran minimum, and if another team signs the player you get a pick from the players original draft round… can’t us this tender on undrafted players.

The Raiders are expected to release CB Chris Johnson if he doesn’t accept a pay reduction.

Johnson turns 33 in September, is owed a $3.5 million salary, and has been cooked in coverage several years running. He could get released and fall out of the league, so it would be in Johnson’s best interest to take a large pay cut. Feb 16 – 8:53 AM

Lechler’s cap hit is 5.65 million. He could actually be a cap casualty if he isn’t willing to work a new deal. It would save us 4 million. As good as Lechler is I just can’t see any punter ever being worth that much.

I want to keep Seabass, Shane & Condo intact.

best ST trio in the league. all Pro Bowlers

I don’t. Shane Lechler makes a bigger impact in the W/L column imo. the best punter of this decade needs to retire a Raider and end up in Canton
