Raiders generate intrigue if not buzz

By Jerry McDonald - NFL Writer
Sunday, February 26th, 2012 at 11:53 am in Oakland Raiders.

Waiting for my flight out of Indianapolis, and after four days of working at the NFL scouting combine, it’s clear a lot of people are intrigued to see how the Raiders operate in the post-Al Davis era.

Raiders general manager Reggie McKenzie and and coach Dennis Allen kept a low profile, with McKenzie declining to talk at the podium (although we spoke on the record Thursday night) and Allen speaking at the same time there was a packed house for Baylor quarterback Robert Griffin III on the other side of the room.

There’s a lot of shop talk and informal conversation that goes on in Indianapolis in the restaurants and watering holes around town, both with fellow media members from other cities as well as scouts, coaches and front office people from other teams _ moreso than at any other NFL event I can think of.

Most everyone is interested to see how the Raiders fare. They’ve never operated before as a “normal” organization and that is what McKenzie and Allen are attempting to foster.

Regarding McKenzie, seldom is heard a discouraging word. By acclimation, McKenzie is considered a solid talent evaluator, a straight shooter and a person of integrity. It’s clear he has a plan, and he’s not going to be concerned about making difficult choices on the roster if it means getting the club’s financial house in order and changing the chemistry on the team.

Allen is harder to figure, because his track record is so limited with one year as a coordinator.

But there really were only two reactions gathered on the Raiders’ new coach during my time here.

Either people know very little about him, or they’re very impressed. Almost nothing in between. Some people wonder about the hire simply because of his experience level, but they concede they’re speaking from that frame of reference only and know little to nothing about the man.

Those people that have had some experience with Allen almost unanimously think he will be a terrific head coach. I didn’t talk to a single person who has dealt with Allen or has some knowledge of how he operates who gave it a thumbs down. Not overly surprising, I guess, considering how fast he climbed the NFL ladder.

In terms of draft buzz, it’s hard to generate any of that when barring a trade, the best they can do is No. 97 if they get the best available compensatory pick. Projecting who could be fifth and sixth round picks as a futile exercise, although it should be noted one of McKenzie’s strengths _ considering how Green Bay operated _ is finding qualities players in those rounds.

Gotta board now . . . counting on taking a week off next week . . .

I thikn Seabass and Lechler want to stay together and I can only imagine after the first 10+ years of their careers they would want to be a part of turning things around where they started.

  • hwnrdr

Yup, I agree…they started their first 3 years on pretty good teams, and the third year being in the Super Bowl…I say they see it through…full circle!

    CW,

large pay cut for CJ37 (32 years old) = you can make $3.5 million over the next 3 years, not just 2012. no guaranteed money.

    2012 salary = $1.16 mil
    2013 salary = $1.16 mil
    2014 salary = $1.16 mil

  • bcz24

Hey Rock Lechlers salary is 3.8 million this year, but we also owe him a $750k roster bonus (not sure of the due date) and we have the remaining 1.1 million cap hit from his signing bonus…

FYI I have found the site Spotrac.com immensly helpful for contract info.

I don’t want to sound like I am advocating cutting Lechler, but if he isn’t willing to do a new deal I could see him being a casualty. This regime isn’t going to overpay for anything, and just shy of 6 million for a punter is clearly overpaying. If we signed him to a new deal for 3-4 mill per year then sweet.

  • Carl Weathers

Wimbley is the highest paid LB my 1.1 mil! And Curry who makes half of what Wimbley gets is #8 for LB…

    Restructure or walk.

    Damn LeBron ….

Did you see Kobe and Carmelo’s reaction to LeBron passing up that last shot?

    Kobe was disgusted.

Doesn’t make any sense how good this guy is but he just can’t get past this issue.

    9 years later mayne!

    Cmon LeBron!!!!

BCZ, like you said last week. Dont want to argue about less than $2 million per season for a player

I want to see him extended. He probably wants to finish his career in Oakland. That would give him the best chance at the HOF imo.

Lechler is the #1 punter in the league. he changes field position. We both agree that he should stay.

BigMac will figure out a way to retain his services. I’m thinking contract extension to add more years and make this year’s cap number drop significantly.

Shane was p1ssed when we dumped Tom Cable for Hue Jackson, but he hasn’t said much of anything about us dropping Huey for Dennis! Shane & Allen are both Texas A&M guys, right?

  • Marks hair

    Severe paycuts for everyone! (applause)

Lebron plays like he is afraid. Afraid in the finals, afraid to take the last shot when it really counts, afraid to lose the dunk contest.

Maybe the guy should have done a little growing up in college before jumping into the NBA?

LeBron just never wants to look bad.

I have no idea why he feels the need to be perfect.

Who gives a damn if you miss the last shot LeBron!

Just effin take the shot. Kobe misses 80% of the last second shots he takes, but does anyone give him crap about it?

    DAMNNNMMMNNN!!!!!!!

Just frustrating as a basketball fan to see that this is they guy that is supposed to carry the league.

  • RaiderRockstar

    Mark,

what is the average salary or cap figure of the Top 5 kickers, punters & long snappers?

that should tell you if these guys are truly “overpaid”.

Could it be that they’re actually earning all that money?

If they are the top paid at each position, by how much?

I can see Reggie scrapping all 3 to bring in three vet minimum guys. Thats a dollars & sense move. However – I think Mark, Reggie & Dennis want to win. These guys can help us accomplish that

    “High interest” in Peyton Manning

Posted by Mike Florio on February 27, 2012, 10:10 AM EST

As it should be. If Manning can throw even at 60 percent of his past arm strength, he’ll be in the top half of all NFL quarterbacks. And the closer he gets to 100 percent, the closer he gets to the top of the heap.

Taking a quick look through the list of conferences and divisions, the following teams should be very interested: Bills, Dolphins, Jets, Browns, Jaguars, Titans, Chiefs (the head coach has already said the team will be), Broncos, Raiders, Redskins, Vikings, 49ers, Cardinals, Seahawks.

???Raiders?….I thought we had a QB?

  • Marks hair

RR, imo long snapper isnt a real pos. Kickers are not first rounders. And although lech is the best, I dont like paying the top salary at any pos. specially special teamers..

  • bcz24

Seabass makes 3.8 mill this year, also in the final year of his deal. IMO he should make more than Lechler because Seabass actually scores points. I agree that both should be signed to new long term deals, but I think we can also agree that these guys will never see contracts like Al gave them again.

So what is the deal with all these NBA guys wearing Erkle glasses off the court? I am sure most of them don’t even need glasses.

  • Marks hair

    328. I dont get it.

  • bcz24

Condo makes 1.2 million. That is 300k more than vet minimum salary, and he is far and away the best at his position. His salary is fine.

    BCZ & Mark,

Seabass, Shane & Condo can and will be retained for less money. As stated previously – take an average of the Top 5 at that position and pay accordingly. I’m comfortable doing this for them. I don’t feel we need to make them “take it or leave it” contract offers as I suggested for Campbell, Bush & Branch because they are all under contract this season, not FA’s. If we can’t strike a new deal this year, let them test the market next offseason and they’ll be compensated fairly to remain in Oakland either way.

Imagine being Shane’s agent and Reggie McKenzie says he wants to keep your client in Oakland and add more years to the deal so he can retire a Raider. Say the Top 5 NFL punters and making an average of $2 million per season. Hard to justify demanding $4-5 million per year, isn’t it? I mean, he’s not gonna make that anywhere else. Is he gonna pack up his family and move to another city & state, just for the sake of doing so for the same amount of money ??? Doubtful.
