Lease extension could be next

By Jerry McDonald - NFL Writer
Wednesday, March 7th, 2012 at 12:01 pm in Oakland Raiders.

It’s encouraging that the Oakland City Council has approved $3.5 million toward efforts to redevelop the Coliseum complex in an effort to keep the Raiders, A’s and Warriors at home, as reported in Wednesday’s Bay Area News Group publications.

That’s a long, long way from it actually happening, however. Keep in mind the Raiders lease is set to expire next year. If the Raiders are truly interested in seeing how the city’s plan plays out, they’ll get an extension on the current lease and announce it at some point in the near future.

Raiders owner Mark Davis is on the record as wanting a stadium deal “sooner rather than later” and CEO Amy Trask has made it clear the Raiders’ first choice is at its current site because of its superior access in terms of public transportation.

Although the Raiders are often thrown into the Santa Clara mix, the 49ers appear on the verge of getting that deal done themselves and the only way it would happen as if the franchises truly needed it each other for it to come to fruition.

I seriously doubt Oakland can get this complex done. As the council person said, “We have no money.”

San Jose is a great destination for the A’s. People who can now go to the Coliseum can still travel a bit further to see the team if they are that devoted as fans. I’d like to see the team survive in Northern CA and the only way that will happen is for them to move to SJ.
    =============================

    flawed logic

1.) oakland is seeking private money from investors and the like, so the fact that oakland is cash strapped is going to be a major hurdle.

2.)People want star power. The a’s have been lacking this since the bash brother days. A new state of the art facility will generate the cash to bring in star players for our team. After the novelty of the new site provides the initial surge, the star power will continue to put butts in the seats.

3.) You are only considering the stadium, and you have ignored the rest of the district that will come with it. Oakland will thrive as people from all over will see the new oakland just as they view china basin in sf. Sports if that your thing, but night life and shopping will also be there.

4.) san jose is a glorified cow town that simply cant compete with the centrally located easily accessible coliseum city. people can come to game and continue the party in oakland, or drive for 20 minutes and head across to sf. Dont want to drive no sweat, bart stops right there. San jose cant offer that, where are you going to go, and how will you get there? nobody wants to hang out in sj then drive to campbell?

5.)This deal makes too much sense fro it not to work beyond sports. Jobs are sorely needed, tourism revenue is sorely needed and a remake will do just the trick. For anybody that thinks it cant be done just visit the new uptown oakland. That place was a wasteland, now it is one of the best destinations in our city, and the shop owners and businesses are raking in the cash. Any investor with half a brain will realize the growth potential in an under served and over looked diamond in the rough.

6.) most important the people of our beloved yet beleaguered city are behind this as we want and need to create jobs, and business opportunities. Everybody knows this here so we will cough up some change if we know that it will help our embattled city rise to new heights.

Think of it, we have the best weather, the most beautiful people, and now we will have two solid entertainment districts, complete with brand new sports venues!! oH AND DID I MENTION THAT OAKLAND IS ONLY ABOUT 10-20 MINUTES FROM EVERY MAJOR CITY IN THE BAY SF, AND BERKELEY? THIS IS GOING TO BE SWEET!

Its not new, been going on for years but still a bit of a surprise to many folks.

When my Father and Uncle were around, I was selling cars, so I had to work on the weekends (more sales), so I never had a chance to go. I would like to watch them in Oakland. I will try to make this season. I should have done it last season.

I owned a house in Stockton in the late 80’s-early 90’s. Went to UOP. Was there briefly when Huge was the QB (i was a frosh).
In my experience Stockton was never nice. They have finally done something with the waterfront area downtown. That was a s-hole that needed some attention for a long time. Still a long way from “nice” though.
I am not a big fan of the central valley though. Sac is a pit too. Not like Fresno-pit but sucky nonetheless….

  16. RaiderRockstar Says:

    O,

there used to be so many devoted Raider fans in SoCal that games @ SD would be like another home game for us. ********************************************************

I dearly hope that the city is not underestimating Mark Davis. Politicians approving a plan doesn’t mean much unless there’s follow-through.

If I’m signing an extension it’s because I have it in writing that construction will commence on a certain day. If it hasn’t the extension becomes null and void and whatever happens after that, happens.

We all know the tremendous benefits to the team and the community that a new stadium would bring. I hope it can happen in Oakland, but I wouldn’t blame Mark if he had a drop-dead date in mind. He has a franchise to run.

    Atlanta Falcons = Georgia Dome
New Orleans Saints = Louisiana Superdome
Saint Louis Rams = Edward Jones Dome
Minnesota Vikings = Hubert H. Humphrey Metrodome
    Detroit Lions = Ford Field

And these Stadiums have retractable roofs :

    Houston Texans = Reliant Stadium
Arizona Cardinals = University of Phoenix Stadium
    Indianapolis = Lucas Oil Stadium

    Cowboys have Romo
    Texans have Schaub
    Lions have Stafford

Marshall Faulk says Peyton Manning will stay in the AFC. Saying the reason why Eli didn’t go to San Diego was not because it was San DIego. But, because he didn’t want to be in the AFC like his brother Peyton. Basically the Manning Family wants to see a Manning Bowl, not one manning knock off the other manning in the same division.

  56. RaiderRockstar Says:

    Matt Cassel

7/14/2009: Signed a six-year, $63 million contract. The deal contains $28 million guaranteed, including a $10 million roster bonus in the first year and a $7.5 million option bonus in the third. 2012: $5.25 million, 2013: $7.5 million, 2014: $9 million, 2015: Free Agent

Speaking at the Scouting Combine Saturday, coach Romeo Crennel said Matt Cassel is the Chiefs’ starter “until we get another quarterback on the team.”

Crennel gave the tepid endorsement during a press conference where he also said the Chiefs would be “crazy” not to pursue Peyton Manning, and that he “might not be coach” were it not for free agent Kyle Orton’s acquisition off waivers in November. The question is not whether Cassel will have competition in 2012, but how serious it will be.

  57. Method To My Madness Says:

Retribution….great idea…just get Palmer outta here…re-unite him with Carroll

  58. edward teach Says:

As much as I hate to say it, I think Manning’s best bet would be KC. They have a ton of weapons on offense and a young, talented defense that will only get better with Romeo Crennell around. It could be argued that they have the best defense in the AFC West, and they’re young.

Watching the PC this morning, it was pretty clear that he’s going to a team that can win now. KC had some devastating injuries to some very key players last year and is much better than their record indicates. Midwestern town, great fan base, not a lot of media, and it’s close to his home in Indy. With the Chargers on the decline, the Broncos trying to figure out what offense they’re going to run next year and no one knowing what kind of defense the Raiders will have, the Chiefs with Manning would probably be the favorites to win the AFC West.

I see all the other teams being mentioned, but this is going to be about what Manning wants to accomplish, not what the press thinks would be interesting.

I was @ the city council meeting last night, & though it took forever, it was a great night. Oakland is not in this alone; Alameda County is in this too. I learned last night each Raider Game creates 12,000 jobs; each Warriors & A’s game represents over 7,000 jobs in Oakland & Alameda County. If all 3 teams left it would be devastating to our economy. The plan is to build a transportation hub next to the Oakland Air Port, so AM tracks, interstate 880, BART & Oakland Airport all connect. Next Oakland is going to design a state of the Art Tech Business Park Next to the Air Port just as close to down town SF as SFO. Then Oakland wants to build a world class sport & entertainment venue (possibly named “Coliseum City”, some want to call it “Oakland Live”, I like “OAKLAND R.A.W.”)Next to the Business Park & airport. The city has paid the developers to come up with a game plan taking no longer than 15 months to figure out the best way to get this done that will include the Environmental Impact Report, foreign investor for the Tech Business Park and Sports & Entertainment facilities, as well as the architect designs. The County will also put a down payment on a loan. The Developers Oakland has hired to plan & negotiate this are the same developers responsible for the Cowboy & Colts stadiums, & are currently developing the Nets new stadium & sports village in Brooklyn. What Oakland really has to offer these teams & investors is the only location in the country that has an Airport, major subway system, major highway as well as Am track around the sport facilities and Business Park as well as all the parking you could ever ask for. Oakland can do this some much cheaper than other city in the State because the city already owns this land, & most of the infrastructure is already in place.

If Kam Wimbley can get any team to pay him 6 million for next year he is GONE. He will already get 6.5 gauranteed. Anywhere he makes more than that will be more in total than this years contract about 11 million.

If he hasn’t left, its probably about a long-term contract, or he hasn’t recieved ANY contract offers for more than 6 million.

    “Manning teams:
    Balt
    jets
    Kc
    Den
    Sf
    Wash”

Sure Washington will throw a ton of cash at him but its not a good place for him to win another ring and he knows that.

There is no way he goes to the Jets as he has said before that he doesn’t want to be in competition with his brother. I think Jason Campbell would be a great fit for the Jets.

KC has a QB that they have a ton of cash invested in and they do not spend money they are 60 million under the cap and will remain there.

Baltimore is in the process of signing Flaco to a long term deal but who knows maybe they will throw Flaco to the curb for Peyton, I would.

Denver is a possibility but I think in the end Miami has the most money to throw around and is willing to do it so if they outbid Denver in terms of money offered.

The other team in the Bay Area is another logical choice as they have money to spend and will spend it.

I say its a toss up between Miami and the butt pirates as to who will sign Peyton.

The wild card being the Texans so he could remain in his division.

  102. Raider O Says:

    B,

  104. Marks hair Says:

  108. raiderzmaverick Says:

Man, the question is what is boss to Manning. Will he go for the most money or take a “discount” for a chance to win it all again.
Miami isn’t a bad option, and I could see him going for it. Good weather. Retire passing Dan Marino’s records in the home where Marino set them.

If he’s fine in colder weather I could see Seattle.

I don’t see him going to Washington. Just don’t see it at all.

KC, god, I hope not. If they actually went after a QB they could be dangerous. But, I couldn’t even imagine seeing Manning in a Chiefs Jersey. I could see him in a Dolphins one for some reason. Seems like it would be made for him.

3.5 million or whatever the amount for the study is a drop in the bucket. Oakland would have to build some residence around there if they want an “Oakland Live”

Seattle may be a good option as they have a ton of cash and Paul Allen is not afraid to spend money they have a pretty good defense.

Miami is where my money is. This gives Manning a chance to beat Brady twice a year.

There will still be a faction of Tebow die-hards out there in Broncoland, but they’ll be basically silenced by the arrival of Manning.

-Bring in a HOF QB who can tutor Tebow (if that’s what they want to do).

    Denver will bringing the $$$$$$

Unfortunately Fox and Elway really didn’t have a choice. The second Orton would come on the field, he would be greeted with boos and chants of “Teblow, teblow…”. No one is going to succeed in that situation. So, they figured they would give the fans what they wanted to shut them up and the rest is history. The only issue with this whole thing, is there is NO WAY, we should not have won the division last year. That’s the bite!

Also weird hearing Simms and Gumble talk about the Raiders and how good they are…what s strong defense they have, and then they flash to a shot of Bresnahan on the sidelines and talking about him in glowing terms. Lol.

    1. Miami (warm weather, descent team to build around, play in the home of Marino to beat his records, still in the AFC).
    2. Seattle between them and Washington I see the biggest $$$ offers. But Seattle has more hope than Washington I think of landing him.
    3. SFO Would go against their style, but Harbaugh might just want to do it appreciating what a good QB can do. Have a great defense, and with a good QB would definitely be a superbowl contender. Plus, they have an opening at QB.

Places like Tampa Bay, Arizona etc. never really land the top name guys. Don’t see it.

He really isn’t that much better than Palmer. He just had a much better team around him.
    =================
No, that’s BS. Manning didn’t always have a good team around him. In fact much of the time he carried the whole darned team. Look at what the players and team looked like after he got hurt.

But, I don’t think we even would look at signing him. With the money we have available (none) and having a good top 10 QB already, just won’t happen.

Look again. For their lst 5 years in the league Palmer was probably a BETTER player than Manning. The difference is Irsay knew what he had and got guys around Manning. Mike Brown never gave a sh**. Which is why Manning won a Super Bowl and players leave Cinncinatti like hot babes leave baichi’s rap parties.

Does he think he will get more on the outside than 28 million? Do the Colts think QBs that can play in the NFL grow on trees? Yes, the Colts stunk last year, but three or four good players can go along way into remedying that along with a NFL QB. Of course, its about money!

KC has the cap room, but nothing else, IMO.

Just went back to #48 on the last thread and watched most of the city council meeting. A few points:

-First off, MAJOR, MAJOR Props are in order for our man B, representating at the meeting. You have executives, and consultants going up there and giving prepared speeches, and our boy goes up and knocks it out the park, in what looks like a Raider jersey, and strengthens the Semi-Pro foundation like never before.

-This 3.5 million is basically just to hire a consultant for the RFP process. Not a commitment of any sorts. These “consultants” could be some hand-picked firm that come in and a month later say “nah, can’t be done.”

-Nice little speech from Rick Tittle, and LOL at the lady calling him “TIT-ol”

-Looking at some funding through a redevelopment agency, which are usually revenued through various tax increases (airport and hotel fee’s, rental cars, parking, etc.) that don’t have to be voter approved. The only way to do it these days.

#11–Won’t happen. And try to tell the area around Oakland, the area from which the A’s have to draw, that Oakland is hospitable and has “beautiful people.” The crime stats scream otherwise.

    http://www.insidebayarea.com/mark-purdy/ci_20122325/purdy-owner-lew-wolff-turns-up-heat-giants

If, as the article states, the MLB minutes of decades ago reveal, as the owner of the A’s maintains, that the Strauss family’s precondition for the SF Giants claiming Santa Clara County as their domain was the Giants building a stadium in Santa Clara, then all bets are off:

“the minutes to that meeting, the A’s statement said, ‘clearly indicate that the Giants were granted’ the territorial rights ’subject to relocating to the city of Santa Clara.’” That’s where the Giants planned to build their own South Bay ballpark until county voters rejected the plan, which called for tax increases.

If true, seems the Giants have been playing unfair ball and my guess is that Selig told Wolff, “If you keep quiet about this, we’ll work things out, slowly.” However, it appears recent leaks by someone which suggest the A’s are not going to be allowed to move, have Wolff concerned to the point he is going public with the real agreement.

  257. luvmarvhub Says:

Hate to say it, but if Elway’s ego will accept Manning, it might happen. Manning is the one QB Elway and Fox can get that will shut up the half of Denver fans who won’t stop yelling, “Tebow.”

I am hoping Elway opts for warmer climes and the NFC, although the only NFC team rumored to be going after him is the Redskins, and WA is hardly in a warm climate.

  258. Corporate_Raider Says:

    Mistic1 Tha Supavillain:

You forget one thing about San Jose and the South Bay … Silicon Valley. If Oakland is going to get private investors where is the money? Silicon Valley.

Stanford, Atherton, Woodside, Palo Alto, Los Altos Hills, Saratoga, Los Gatos, Cupertino, Sunnyvale, Santa Clara, San Jose, Almaden … all affluent, safe, clean areas.

Plus great weather in the most populous city in the bay area.

Good points Sir but your logic is also very flawed.
