Palmer joins Seymour, Huff as restructures

Add quarterback Carson Palmer to the list of Raiders players who have restructured their contracts to help get the team below the NFL salary cap.

The club announced on its Twitter account Thursday that Palmer, along with defensive tackle Richard Seymour and safety Michael Huff, had restructured their contracts.

The salary cap is expected to be in the $120 million range when announced early next week. The Raiders, according to various reports, have been anywhere from $10 million to $20 million over the cap.

The Huff and Seymour restructures reportedly saved the Raiders more than $11 million against the cap. Palmer was due a $12.5 million salary, a figure that was likely slashed with money in the form of a roster bonus added with a possible extension. For bookkeeping purposes, that drops the cap number because bonus money is prorated over the life of the contract.

Still to be determined is the status of outside linebacker and nickel rusher Kamerion Wimbley, who is due $6.5 million in guaranteed money this season and $11 million in all.

If the Raiders desire to actually cut Wimbley’s payout, it’s possible the man who has 16 sacks over the past two seasons could end up being released and on the open market when the free agency period begins next Tuesday.

Another potential restructure could be linebacker Aaron Curry, who almost certainly won’t play for his existing $5.75 million salary in 2012 but has expressed a desire to remain a Raider.

Okay some of you dudes are off your rockers…

We gave up on Jafatball to soon?
Trade draft picks and players for Teblow?

This is insanity at it’s finest considering we already have 3 draft picks this year tied up in QB’s, one of which won’t be playing for us and another who supposedly has no chance of ever starting?

  • LA to TheBay

And he played pretty well against the Ravens in relief of Frye to end the season.

Before fumbling the game away? Or did an INT end it? I forget which came first.

Why even bring up the guy who has been gone for a couple of years now?

    Wimbley = Businessman.

When the hell did JR give up? Still haven’t figured out what JR did that’s so unforgivable. If Kerry Collins can get 10 more chances, JR surely deserves one.

Yes, I understand the hatred towards JR because he set the Raiders back a few years… but in the end we got a QB that hopefully can win us a ring. Thats all that really counts. This is a GAME folks.

I truly hope he turns his life around like Ryan Leaf did.

He is actually a very inspirational figure now, if you hear him speak.

He was an improvement over Hall but he didn’t deserve that ridiculous contract he got that’s for sure.

I don’t hate the guy, I wish him well but I also wouldn’t be surprised if we sign him back when no one else shows interest.

We signed CJ after he was cut by Green Bay.No surprise Reggie cut him. What is surprising is it took so long.Eugene is probably coming up too.Over 2 mil for a BU safety, although he was a good ST player but after his injury can that still be counted on.

Damn good question! I suspect the bogus Vicks 44 allegeations leveled at him cost him him shot with the Bengals and Jets in 2010. Toward the end of the year, he got a look from the Redskins, who didn’t end up signing anyone. With no offseason in 2011 during the lockout, there was a glut of free agents that signed late and he probably got lost in the shuffle. Lots of bad luck for this dude. Too bad he doesn’t have an Ernie Acorsi, who was great friends with Joe Paterno, hand him a job like he did for Collins in NY. We’ll see what happens in 2012. If he really wants to make a comeback, and I don’t blame him if he doesn’t, he’ll get another shot.

Releasing CJ & Eugene should get us under the cap. Clayton reported that we were $5 million over the cap before we released both players.

Tracy Porter and Richard Marshall are two logical mid-tier targets. Relatively young players with some talent who have gotten it done for their teams in the past. Low-risk signings who would likely be instant starters.
