Raiders cut Carlisle, Henderson

By Jerry McDonald - NFL Writer
Wednesday, March 14th, 2012 at 11:10 am in Oakland Raiders.

Starting right guard Cooper Carlisle and defensive tackle John Henderson were cut by the Raiders Wednesday, with Henderson failing his physical.

Carlisle, a starter for the past four years, was due $3.3 million in salary and his release saves a reported $2.1 million against the salary cap. Henderson was due $4 million in salary.

The Raiders could move to bring back Carlisle at some point, given his experience with the zone blocking system which will be re-introduced this season under offensive coordinator Greg Knapp and line coach Frank Pollack.

The moves give the Raiders maneuverability should they attempt to sign free agents. Oakland’s room under the $120.6 million salary cap was an NFL low $636,000 at one point according to ESPN, although those figures remain fluid as contracts are jettisoned or restructured.

In other news, unrestricted free agent running back Michael Bush has reportedly lined up visits with the Cincinnati Bengals and Chicago Bears.

According to this link, cutting the two save us a combined $8.1 mil against the cap.

    wn,
Yesterday I was HOT. Today a little less. I hate to see Udoh leave more than Monta. I hate S Jackson returning I hope they have a trade worked out for him. Bogut will be nice next year. They threw in the towel on the playoffs this year only 3 games out that sucks! I think we will be better off next year though.

    Dakota,

If you could find a way to get Carmelo on the team, I’d be ok with you also letting Bynum go for Howard.

    +++++++++++++

Did you read that report that in just the past couple of weeks Howard has been called by Kobe and told he doesn’t want Howard on the Lakers?????

If that is true, it is time to kick Kobe to the curb. Can’t let the fkn selfish fool destroy our chances to reload instead of rebuild.

C’mon RR. You know you want to say it. Let me help you out: Salary Cap Hell is a myth. It’s the greatest excuse there is for cutting players and sitting on your hands during free agency. Everyone on this board should completely disregard it, kind of like NFL front offices do.

I made that call that Bush would sign with the Bengals about a month ago. He stays helthier than Benson, runs just as hard, and he can catch out the backfield. Dalton was in need of that last year. Also, he played at Louisville real close to Cincy so they know what the guy can do. Not surprised one bit, Bush will be in a great situation with the Bengal’s.

By the way Bengals were 40 mill under the salary cap so they have more money to burn on other players as well. They are in a good spot, dang!!

    ******************
Because he has no interest in signing any of these big money guys. I told you all in January we will not spend more than $5 mill on ANY FA player this year. He is in no hurry because the guys he has targeted are in no danger of being gone.

With a $14.035 million salary and a cap figure north of $19 million, Freeney simply earns too much money for a player on the wrong side of 30. Now that Cory Redding has signed to play end in Chuck Pagano’s defense, Freeney is a candidate for release. The seven-time Pro Bowler would be highly coveted on the open market, just at a 2012 figure significantly less than $14 million.

The loss of DMac for half the year and extended absences by Ford and Moore as well as Boss hurt massively! Palmer will be MUCH improved this year with a full offseason and camp to work with these guys. I think Ausberry will more than make up for Boss too.

On defense the loss of Sho-nasty was devastating. That loss unbalanced our entire defensive front! Without this dimension our pressure went down which left our secondary far more exposed. I feel if Goethel comes back healthy and is ready to go and the maturing of McClain under a defensive coach coupled with Curry now being tasked with hunting QB’s we might be OK. Any addition should be at corners though I think Huff and Chekwa might be better than average this year.

    thoughts?

  239. Nnamdi21 Says:

Okay, so we’ve been chucking around the term “Moneyball” pretty loosely in regard to new Raider GM Reggie McKenzie’s approach to the post Al Davis era.

The term itself refers of course to former Oakland A’s staffer Billie Beane (played by Brad Pitt in the movie) and the revolutionary system of data crunching and player evaluation based on a non-traditional approach to baseball talent scouting.

We won’t launch into a history lesson or the quantum math we think is involved but suffice it to say the system was built to help the A’s with a $41 million dollar budget, compete with the Yankees who had a $121 million dollar budget.

The “Sabermetrics” system (which stands for “Society for American Baseball Research”) isn’t directly applicable to football but anyone with a pulse should be able to see that when you replace “on base percentage” and “slugging percentage” with football terminology like “first downs per catch” and “turnovers forced” the system could, should, translate directly to other team sports.

Whether its done by teams with or without money is of zero consequence now. Its simply a system using unconventional thinking and asymetrical application to make a team, any team, better regardless of finacial status.

If teams like New York Mets, New York Yankees, San Diego Padres, St. Louis Cardinals, Boston Red Sox, Washington Nationals, Arizona Diamondbacks, Cleveland Indians, and the Toronto Blue Jays in Major League Baseball are now using the system why hasn’t the NFL adapted and adopted?

We’re not sure of the answer to that one but suffice it to say at least one team has.

    PATRIOT GAMES

As much as we in Oakland hate the Patriots (it was a FUMBLE!!!) they have to be commended for thinking outside that provebial box.

A good friend and co-founder of this site once said:

“The problem with genius is sometimes those that aren’t can’t see it.”

Maybe thats why other teams haven’t followed the Patriots lead in applying “Sabermetrics” or the football equivalent, to their squads.

    Until now…

    A NEW DAY

Many Raider fans have been perplexed by Oaklands lack of action so far in this years Free Agency period but thats all part and parcel of the plan.

    The Moneyball plan.

To paraphrase, vaunted sports authority Jerry McDonald of Inside Bay Area was on the right track when he mentioned “We have no idea who Reggie will pursue because now that Davis is gone, theres a whole new and unknown system of valuing talent.”

    Unknown till now.

Jerry, unlike us, is hobbled by obligation not to reveal all that he knows. Thats why we have the advantage over the bigs and we’re telling you and have been telling you since Reggie’s inagural presser on January 10th what direction he and Mark are headed.

    WHY MONEYBALL?

    Moneyball works.

Brian Burke, founder of Advanced NFL Stats Inc. says “The Patriots are the ‘Moneyball’ team of the NFL, no doubt about it, The Patriots are in the Super Bowl because they have this system and stick to it. The Giants are in the Super Bowl because they are lucky.”

So if “Moneyball” is so great why aren’t more teams in the NFL using it?

Have no illusions, statisticians are trying to bring mathematics and economics to decisions made to on field strategy and player drafting. It’s called analytics and in many, but not all, ways it runs counter to decades of football philosophy.

Just like in Big Government, doing things the wrong way because its tradition makes things difficult especially for those so entrenched in the old ways who would become essentially obsolete or at least less valued, were a new system installed.

One of the major reasons the late Mr. Davis disliked the press was their inability to understand the way he did things which in turn led to criticism (deserved or not) and many a great man has struggled to accomplish lofty goals while struggling to explain to the masses his intent.

    “RAIDERBALL”

So in closing, Oakland is now running a “Moneyball” scheme and after decades of “the Davis way” (in and of itself a sort of Moneyball scheme if you think about it) the Raiders are now launching full force into a new era of football with an eye toward the future and like Al Davis before them, a radically different approach toward evaluating talent and team.

Like we said, Davis did things his own way. Reggie reaching outside the box to install something different, mis-understood and seemingly a 180 on the Davis philosophy seems to be a pretty fitting tribute to the old man after all…

    Mark Brisiel mini-analysis from footballnation.com.

After receiver, the Texans may look to draft a guard. Their offensive line was tremendous this season, especially in the running game. Starting guards Wade Smith and Mark Brisiel played well at stages, but if they have a weakness it’s at right guard with Brisiel, who sometimes looked overwhelmed against bigger opponents. Backup Antoine Caldwell also struggled at times. Also the Texans may not be as lucky next season with injuries to this group. Four of the five starters started every game and only Brisiel missed starts (started 13 regular season games).

  302. Lowdown_in_Beijing Says:

    2) Boss – We have 3 guys including Asbury that will fill the gap.
    3) Henderson – He failed the physical and is not worth 4 mil. He’s done. We’ll have to get a cheap free agent.
    4) Carlisle – He is old and we are looking at the guy from the Texans or can use Heyer who was good in relief.
    5) Campbell…he was gone. Will have to find somebody .

Well, the dischargers and broncs would have some indication of his value, playing him twice a year, but yeah this could be the year of lavish spending. On the other hand, the chargers adjusted to him the second game last season and took him out of the game (not one punt forced on D) and tebow made him look useless in run support.

I don’t know if Jason Campell got 3.5 million from the bears, it harder to see Kam worth more to a team then J Camp.

    131. Disagree.

Thats the “I hate Al Davis and he is responsible for the plague” party line but it is incorrect.

To claim we suddenly are suffering under the weight of Davis’ “out of whack” contracts is only partially true.

Davis operated the same way for 40+ years and with the exception of Jamarcus Russell NEVER had a problem meeting cap or signing players and FAs.

To claim he f’ed us this last time is not correct.

To realize we’re struggling now because of it (like Wimbley’s deal) means understanding of the new GM and his new system.

    Have a good day Nation!~
    ++++++++++++

Disagree, and you have done nothing to assuage my point of view.
First of all where in my post does it say “I Hate Al Davis”?
Second of all, he got Free Agents Here because he overpaid them by millions of dollars..the result of which was them suddenly sucking at football because they could rest on their A$$es, not produce, and point to their absurd contracts as to why they should start..See: MeAngelo Hall, Randy Moss, J.R, and to a certain extent the oft M.I.A Richard Seymour….
Im not even interested one bit in how he got under the cap, none of that matters, nor did I even address it in my Original Post because that is not what I was talking about.
I am saying that it is really f’ing nice to see the scholarship program burned and buried, and the Raider A.T.M closed until you prove that you can play..That is all.

Brisiel? He’s been elected captain of the 20th All-Joe Team, USA TODAY’s annual squad celebrating first-rate players who receive second-rate recognition.

    MORE: 2010 All-Joe team
    MORE: 2009 All-Joe team
    MORE: 2008 All-Joe team
    Who? What?

Playing guard for the Houston Texans may as well be the NFL’s version of the Witness Protection Program, but that’s been the job for Brisiel, who (naturally) wasn’t drafted, for the last six seasons. And it’s probably why — despite the media saturation the NFL enjoys in the 21st century — he barely registered a blip despite playing two postseason games for the Texans not four weeks after breaking his right fibula, one of two weight-bearing bones in the lower leg.

Let us be more specific. Brisiel had a player roll up the back of his right leg — a nightmare scenario for any offensive lineman while they’re engaged in a block — during an Oct. 9 loss to the Oakland Raiders. Brisiel played the next nine weeks with what he called a “hot spot” in his leg until it finally cracked Dec. 11 at Cincinnati.

Again, let us be more specific. Brisiel broke the bone early on against the Bengals but finished the game, the one that clinched the first-ever playoff berth for the Texans. The next day, he needed six screws and a plate surgically implanted to stabilize the leg.

“The adrenaline was pumping big time because we had to win that game to clinch our division,” Brisiel recalls. “In the game it swelled up, but it didn’t bother me enough to keep me out. I look back on it, I probably should’ve been in more pain.”

Despite his courageous display of toughness, Brisiel says it was he who was grateful to the Texans.

“I’ve been here for six years. When they told me I wouldn’t be on IR (season-ending injured reserve), I was so incredibly thankful, and I got a chance to play in our first playoff game.”

With 26 days of rehabilitation and bone stimulation, Brisiel made the most of that chance, starting Jan. 7 when the Texans crushed the Bengals 31-10 in the wild-card round to the delight of Houstonians at rocking Reliant Stadium. He was back on the front lines the following week when the Texans’ breakthrough season was ended by the Baltimore Ravens in the divisional round of the playoffs.

By the way, he needed arthroscopic surgery on his ankle following that game.

Despite such a valiant effort, Brisiel (pronounced BREYE-zell) is so unassuming that he thought the Texans public relations staff was pulling a prank when informed of his All-Joe captaincy.

As for the pain? “Not that big of a deal,” Brisiel says. “Once the plates are in there, you’re safe. It’s just how much pain can you handle.”

Rather than tout his pain threshold, Brisiel credits Houston’s trainers for getting him ready to play. Rather than basking in his performance, Brisiel praises tailbacks Arian Foster and Ben Tate for making him look good.

Uh, Mike, they’re supposed to thank you.

“It’s a blessing to be part of a group of guys who want to work every day,” he says.

    And work hard they have.

The Houston O-line was a laughingstock when Brisiel arrived, the unit frequently blamed for the demise of former quarterback David Carr. But it’s quietly become one of the best groups in the league, fronting an offense ranked fourth or better in three of the past four years while paving the way to Foster’s rushing title in 2010. Tackles Duane Brown and Eric Winston and center Chris Myers are all worthy All-Joe candidates, though Myers is forever disqualified after getting added to the AFC’s Pro Bowl roster, the first Texans O-lineman ever so honored.

“I love it down here,” says Brisiel “There’s something growing here, and I want to be a part of it.”

Which is why he hopes Houston re-signs him even though his current deal is set to expire. Brisiel’s outlook on the potential riches of free agency? About what you’d expect.

“I’m treading in unfamiliar territory,” he says. “This is the first time I’ve not had a contract.

“Everyone wants to reach free agency, and you get there — and now I don’t know what to do.”

Enjoy it, Mike. You’ve definitely earned a reward.

    Let’s see we have lost:

    1) Routt – no way he was worth the cash. We’ll find somebody just as good for half price or use Huff, Chekwa or DVD to replace him.

    6) Bush is good as gone. Maybe in the draft late rounds or a FA.

I’m more talking about Carlisle and Stele. Maybe we’ll find replacements. But, they were part of a rock solid line overall. I know each of them individually doesn’t seem imposing, but however as part of the group they did damned well overall.

The ironic thing is that if you went back to say, early August 2011 and read this same blog, know what you’d see? All kinds of crying and moaning about how not a player on the Raiders roster (with the possible exception of newly drafted but unproven little Wiz) was an NFL caliber starting lineman.

Amazing how quickly perceptions change when you have the right mixture of scheme and coaching working with the talent available. Fact is that Knapp knows a thing or two about schemes and OL based on the results where ever he’s been. If his input is leading to the cuts based on the bang for the buck of payers like Satele and CC, then I’m putting my trust in his knowledge. I have plenty of faith that he has the skill to spot the types of talent that will work in his system. I also have confidence in what McKenzie has shown around fiscal responsibility to bring in guys at the right price.

When all is said and done, the Raiders will have as a good of an OL as they did last season at a lower cap hit and possibly even with a little more youth for long term cohesiveness over the next few seasons.

    Here’s an irresponsible prediction:

Wimbley decide to keep Kam and Raiders honor the contract as it stands.

Wimbley will be held to a lofty performance level (by staff)in OTA’s and beyond,to match the pay.
    =======================
I wouldn’t be shocked if we keep him either actually.

    ++++++++++++++

Really? I would be blown away if the chose to pay the guy nearly $30 million over the next 3 years. Completely shocked and, frankly, dissapointed in RM and crew.

I do get it. It’s just not really a “trap” when that moron posts the exact same thing over and over and over again, and sometimes people respond, and sometimes they don’t. But he just posts the same idiotic swill over and over and over regardless of who responds or if there are any response at all. The real “trap” is he is here sadly wasting his pathetic existence. RB- Mike Tolbert (Brandon Jacobs?)

    C- Re-sign Samson Satele
LB- Leroy Hill or Manny Lawson (both?)
CB- Tracy Porter (Forgot Rodgers signed oops)
    DT- Broderick Bunkley
