Raiders line up visit with potential replacement for Carlisle

By Steve Corkran
Wednesday, March 14th, 2012 at 3:32 pm in Oakland Raiders.

On the heels of releasing veteran right guard Cooper Carlisle on Wednesday, the Raiders lined up a visit with free agent Mike Brisiel.
Brisiel’s position? You guessed it, right guard. His former team? The Houston Texans, the team that employed current Raiders offensive coordinator Greg Knapp the past two seasons and current Raiders offensive line coach Frank Pollack the past five seasons.
Brisiel, who turned 29 today, has spent all six of his NFL seasons with the Texans. He started 47 games the past five seasons, including 13 last season.
It’s possible that the Raiders will bring back Carlisle at some point, just at a cheaper salary than the $3 million he was slated to earn in 2012. In the interim, the Raiders are checking out other options.
Brisiel missed the final three games of last season with a broken leg. He also missed time in 2010 with a calf injury. Carlisle missed only one snap last season and one game the past seven seasons.

By Cooper! Hope you re-sign as a backup with us though!

Not worried about O-line. If your system and RB are solid, you can plug in no-names and succeed (see Texans, Ravens, Titans, Broncos last 7 years).

We’ll find some 5th rounders and FAs to plug in next to All-Pro talents Veldheer and Wiz.

Plenty of big tough kids in college that can come in and fit a solid system.

Couldn’t disagree more….those teams you named have studs. They might not be the names everyone remembers from mock drafts, but they’re solid because they play solid. Not just the system. We’ve had decent systems here, but regardless, the right side of the line has been trash for like a decade. Hell, the whole line was trash for awhile. There might be plenty of kids, but we sure haven’t found ‘em. Young Wiz was a gift we found simply because of his blood-line. Need more like him.

Hey Bruce Campbell, will you please step up and earn a starting spot!?!

Every contract is only long enough til they become a free agent. Farewell tour cannot last more than a year.

    Is that hard to process?

Denver doesn’t have “studs.” In fact, Carlisle was one of those “studs” there just a few years ago.

They have solid, average, tough NFL linemen, but not studs. Same for the Texans, Ravens, etc.

Yet combine those solid players with a stud RB or stud system, and those solid linemen become hot free agents.

But they can be equitably replaced by bringing in other solid, average NFL linemen.

  43. Raider O Says:

    Realistic FA Wish List:
    CB: T Porter
OLB: L Hill, Woodyard, or McIntoch

RB: P Hillis (if he doesn’t become a CIA agent)

  44. Dakota Says:

There are conflicting accounts of what Dwight Howard said during a players’ meeting in San Antonio Wednesday, but a person with knowledge of the conversation told CBSSports.com that the All-Star center told a Magic official outside of that meeting he will not opt out of his contract for next season.

Some players in the meeting, which Howard called after a hotel walk-through to prepare for Wednesday night’s game against the Spurs, came out of the room believing Howard indicated he was “all in” for the rest of the season, multiple sources said. Other players have told associates they interpreted Howard’s stance to mean he was opting in for next season.

“It’s like a game of telephone,” one person briefed on the players’ meeting said.

But Howard has in his possession a waiver of his early-termination option for next season, which he indicated to a high-level management figure Wednesday that he would sign. The Magic, fearful of Howard’s indecision over his future, also want to require Howard’s agent, Dan Fegan, to sign the document.

The requirement to get a commitment from Howard in writing that he won’t become a free agent if the Magic keep him beyond Thursday’s 3 p.m. ET deadline essentially would be unprecedented. As a matter of business, agents are not required to sign any documents related to player contracts, player options or early-termination options. The only document they sign is an affidavit associated with their representation agreement that stipulates there will be no side deals.

Chris Paul was traded to the Clippers in December with the understanding that he would not exercise his player option for 2012-13 as part of the trade. The player option was exercised as part of the three-team deal that sent him from New Orleans to the Clippers.

Whether Howard will take the additional step of signing the ETO waiver — and, more to the point, wheher Fegan will agree to such a departure from protocol — will provide the next dramatic turn of events in the Howard saga.

On Tuesday night, after leading the Magic to a 104-98 victory over the Heat in his final home game before the trade deadline, Howard infuriated some Magic officials when he put all the onus on them heading into Thursday. Howard told reporters that he’s “going to stay” with the team for the rest of the season and that the Magic needed to “roll the dice” on whether he’d return beyond that.

Magic officials were so concerned about how many times Howard has changed his story about wanting to stay or leave Orlando as a free agent this summer that they went to San Antonio armed with the ETO waiver for Howard to sign. It’s not a league requirement or league protocol, but rather what the Magic feel they need to protect their interests if they decide not to trade Howard by Thursday.

On the one hand, you can’t blame them. This is big business, and Howard is a prized asset that the franchise can’t afford to lose for nothing the way the Magic lost Shaquille O’Neal to the Lakers as a free agent in 1996. On the other, if the Magic need Howard’s signature on a legal document as proof that he won’t abandon them or go back on his word, that says everything you need to know about where the two sides stand.

raiderzmaverick Says: “You forget quickly how bad our O-Line was under the “plug and play” system up until 2 years ago.”

And suddenly, Hue Jackson brought in the right run-system for DMac, DMac stayed healthy all of last season, and voila!, a solid o-line.

System, system, and RB talent = solid line.

Or you can think that the Ravens, Texans, and Broncos simply keep getting extremely lucky with every linemen they bring in over a 7-year period.

    ++++++++++

No, if he does not sign anything, and does not exercise his option he will still be in Orlando next year. The Magic WANT him to “make things official” by signing a document that will remove that player option from his contract.

I actually went to Cave City when I was like 10 or 11 to visit Mammoth Cave National Park. Not sure if it still is, but back then it was the biggest underground cave system in the country. When I went to school at WKU, I knew a few chicks in surrounding cities and hit them up (Glasgow, Franklin, Hoptown), but pretty much was either in Bowling Green or back home in Louisville during those 4 and a half years.

Are you from Clarksville? Got a close homie that lives and does construction in Clarksville. We would always hit up Portland, TN right across the border to get beer on Sundays if we were in Bowling Green for the weekend ’cause of Warren County’s dry Sunday rule.

We lost our GM in the middle of season, lost the leading rusher in the NFL and our best player 1st half of season, a starting corner, our best receivers injured off and on and missing games, our starting QB replaced by an aging veteran (I love Carson don’t get me wrong) who was busy hedging the shrubs in his backyard and fixing door knobs before getting a call to QB an NFL team and pressured to learn a new NFL playbook in short time, with the worst defense since the 1952 Texans, and WE STILL FINISH 8-8.

Moss won’t be a starter, he’ll be in there to spread the field, run some vertical routes, open up the underneath for Vernon Davis and the running game, catch a couple of easy 7 yard curls when the DB is 10 yards off, and be a 1-on-1 deep option for a few big plays.

49ers know that, Moss knows that.

  95. alex7 Says:

agreed, DJohnny, post 68 is a solid reminder of how much we actually over-achieved last season. Was a fun one.

  96. Chris in NY Says:

    Alex,
Can’t explain it exactly, just doesn’t pass the eye test for me. Short guy with short steps. Not very fast or quick. Cost SD a game vs us in 2010 fumbling on the goal line. I think he’s just a guy and I’d rather get somebody who I think has more upside who can also contribute on STs.

  97. RaiderRetribution Says:

Raiders just might be committed to Taiwan as our back up, especially if he gains about ten ponds and maintains or increases his speed.

    I would like us to sign Tolbert, Bush, Green-Ellis, or draft another RB with our 5th or 6th round pick but if not;

Raiders always have Reece as our back up RB as well.

Raider backfield as it stands now:

McFadden, Jones, Reece, Cartwright, Tonga, Gordon, Miller, and who knows maybe Rashawn Jackson is the next A.Foster.

Raiders have been gaining ground on our division opponents so far this free agency period:

    San Diego lost Vincent- really huge plus for the Raiders (Gates is not what he once was);

Kansas City just lost Brandon and got the other Peyton; Raiders always play well good run defense against the power backs, it’s the game-breakers we have porblems with.

Yeah, I get what you’re saying as far as Tolbert’s upside being limited, but with DMac and Taiwan’s injury concerns, it’d be nice to have a guy you know what you’re getting out of, instead of a hit and miss as the main backup.

  113. J Hill Says:

    Interesting situation with Wimbley.

Too bad for Reggie that a similar player has yet to sign.

Wimbley won’t be released until more of the FA dollars are wiped out. A lot of 5 yr/$50M contracts going out left and right. Even if there aren’t many comparables, it should drive down the price for Wimbley after several teams shoot their load on wideouts.

I dont’ think Mac is going to finagle with the cap like Al did. Raiders should be in pretty good shape next year.
This year the Raiders need the cap space just to be able to sign the few draft picks and potential UDFA’s

  121. alex7 Says:

    I assume Reggie thinks:

“Wimbley…bunch of sacks against a backup LT…not good on run D…he can take a paycut or leave.”

Or he gets cut, goes to the Steelers, and is a monster 3-4 rush LB.

    LeRon McClain

Chargers signed FB Le’Ron McClain, formerly of the Chiefs, to a three-year deal.
Free agent Mike Tolbert is likely moving on, which would certainly be good news for the fantasy prospects of Ryan Mathews. McClain thinks he’s a tailback, but he’s really a true lead-blocker and pass-protector with limited rushing ability. In his career, McClain has averaged just 3.8 yards-per-carry on 329 totes.

Source: ProFootballTalk on Twitter Mar 14 – 7:09 PM

Peyton Hillis – RB – Chiefs
Chiefs signed RB Peyton Hillis, formerly of the Browns, to a one-year, $3 million deal.
It’s likely Hillis turned down more money from the Browns more than once last season. The signing reunites Hillis with OC Brian Daboll, who oversaw his breakout 2010 campaign. It also provides the Chiefs with an excellent insurance policy on rehabbing feature back Jamaal Charles (torn ACL), and a massive upgrade on short-yardage runners Thomas Jones and Jackie Battle. Although Hillis’ presence makes it unlikely Charles will be in for a repeat of his 1,467-yard 2010 campaign, it restores the “thunder and lightning” dynamic Kansas City expertly exploited between Charles and Jones in 2010. That is, provided Hillis stays healthy after being limited to 10 games by a variety of ailments last season.

Not sure if Kam want’s to do the Raiders any favors, maybe there’s some monetary hit the Raiders can take beyond the $6.5M to help subsidize Kam’s salary so that a trade for draft pick can be done. His agent knows that and knows he’ll get an average of another $8 mil or so per year in FA. No incentive for Kam to take a payout. In fact, he may have incentive to get cut.

As much as Reg Mac doesn’t want to overpay, I really don’t see a plan B in free agency. He may end up biting the bullet and rolling with Kam under the current deal.

Everyone loves Shaughnessy, but you need as many guys to get after the QB as possible. Kam is our only edge speed option.

    ********************************************************

No doubt, Chris. All I was saying is that Shaughnessy coming back is adding another guy that can rush the passer, and we don’t spend an extra dime doing it.

Reggis and DA were looking hard at d-line and linebackers at the combine, and I expect that they have that in mind.

Let’s get Bruce Campbell and Barksdale in the lineup this year. I’m telling you we’re missing out by not playing Campbell.

Barring a major signing, line should be
    Veldheer-Wiz2-Satele-Barksdale-Campbell
    *******************

Don’t think Satele will be a starter this year. We need to resign FA Heyer for OLG. Move Wiz to center. Sign Beisel for ORG and put Barksdale at ORT. Put BCampbell that he either develops to a starting performance level this year by game 8 or he’s gone. Satele would be an OK signing for BU-C. We’ve also got some OL new names on the practice squad that may have merit. Guess we’ll find out at training camp.

  250. r8eray Says:

The Rams’ salary purge continues. Bartell was on the books for $6.2 million next season, a prohibitive number after a broken neck limited him to one game in 2011. He is still rehabbing, and isn’t guaranteed to be 100 percent for training camp. Bartell does plan to play in 2012, however, and has been informed he’s at no extra risk of injury going forward. A second-round pick in 2005, Bartell was the Rams’ longest-tenured defensive player. Old pal Steve Spagnuolo, now New Orleans’ defensive coordinator, might show interest if Bartell can pass physicals!

Ron bartel is not the answer for us in the secondary.. reggie knows it, so its not gonna happen. i expect to see some no namers for bargain prices in that secondary next season, and dvd better show hes making strides cause reggie will cut him the moment he shows zero progress..

    ********************************************************

Makes sense. Two underpublicized guys that have been solid starters in the league.

Pollack likes Brisiel, or he wouldn’t be on the radar. Bartell was actually given a big deal to resign with the Rams in 2009, but broke a bone in his lower neck last year and finished the year on injured reserve. If he checks out he could be a bargain.

Not a lot of money to spend, so you gotta look for value. So far so good.

  255. raidertbone Says:

Gallery on a team without Al and without Cable … just might work!

  256. J-Raider Says:

bartel would probably ask for around 4 mil a year, possibly incentive laiden but still no bargain..

  257. JB Says:

So when does Reggie drop the hammer on Wimbley? That drama is getting old.

  258. J-Raider Says:

Oakland linebacker Kamerion Wimbley has yet to hear from the Raiders. More than $17 million in salary and bonuses will kick in by the weekend if the Raiders don’t cut or restructure the deal. Odds are Wimbley will be cut, because there has been no communication. Wimbley is open to doing a new deal, but is not taking a pay cut.

Maybe the Raiders are resigned to keeping the strong pass-rusher, since they won’t get better by cutting him. Again, the odds are Wimbley will be cut, but Oakland’s silence makes one wonder what its plans are.

The agent for former Oakland guard Robert Gallery said the Seahawks will cut him. San Diego could be a possible destination if the Chargers want a veteran left guard and he conceivably could go back to Oakland if the Raiders want to move Stefen Wisniewski to center. Both teams could do a lot worse.

Reggie once kicked a horse in the chin. Its decendants are known today as Giraffes.

  292. Chris in NY Says:

No need to clean house and doesn’t look like we’re going that way. Every team has turnover. Shedding some older or injured guys like Henderson, Carlisle, Eugene is not clearing house. So far the move on Routt is the only eyebrow raiser.

If anything Reggie is largely holding pat with the team Al and Hue set up. Palmer, Seymour, Branch, Huff, Curry, DMac, TK, all stiaying. Reece and Bryant tendered. As hard as I was on Reggie for firing Hue, I’m fine with his handling of the roster to this point.

Talent is here– on both sides of the ball.

  293. J Hill Says:

    25 pts 18 boards, Dakota!

  294. edward teach Says:

    Chris in NY,

I don’t think cutting Routt was an eyebrow raiser. The guy committed over 10 per cent of the teams’ total penalties in 2011 all by himself, and gave up way too many touchdowns and big catches than a #1 corner could possibly be expected to, especially when you consider who was playing the other corner. If he was truly a #1 teams would have targeted the other guy more often; as it was, they knew they could attack him directly and their odds of getting a PI or the actual catch was pretty good.

Easy decision, in my view, and a smart one.

  295. Chris in NY Says:

I know I’ll get slammed for this, but I think we should sign Shockey to a 1 year, $1 million deal. The reason is this: we don’t have many emotional leaders on this team. I think Shockey could be that guy who stirs the drink. Gets other guys to play with a swagger and passion that’s sometimes missing from this team. Plus the guy can still block, run and catch. Plus it would just feel like an old, classic Al Davis style reclamation move. Think Alzado, Romo, etc. And that would make me feel better about the Raiders and this whole transition.

Desmond Bryant receives a 2nd round tender….means he’s pretty good and got some good upside.

Houston is 2nd round pick who is a real DT who has played well and has good upside.

So why are we paying TK $8MM to steal reps from the above and still have a rotten to the core run defense.

As for Wimbley….can’t be an every down DE cause he’s too light, can’t cover….and doesn’t get many sacks. Is he worth $6MM let alone $11M…..definitely not worth the $18M if he’s around beyond the weekend.

Can his production be replaced? What about taking some of the $4M saved from cutting Wimbley and signing some serviceable replacement.

Seymour has such a gigantic contract that cutting him was impossible….but does he ever dominate.

I love watching Raider football like the next guy…..but I don’t like watching the losing and the sheer amount of excuses for a loser group on defense.

The only area of the team that has been “gutted” is the the secondary.

Boyd, Gio, Routt, CJ37 = no longer on the team.

Other than that, we’ve gotten rid of older vets like Eugene, Henderson, and Carlisle.

The much hated Tommy Kelly isn’t going anywhere. He’s been doing exactly what’s been asked of him the past few years. Davis’ defense called for penetrating DTs not the occupying type, right?

Only way I see Kelly traded is if we go 3-4.

  303. Hardline Says:

Reggie is playing it smart being cautious about bringing in high priced FA’s for which the law of diminishing proportions applies: that law demonstrates that as soon a football player gains a huge money contract his performance declines proportionately to the amount of the contract. Time and again this happens with the high number of players falling victim to this rule. To identify same players would be an endless task and is beyond the scope of this post.

However, one example is AL’s demented buffoonery at awarding huge and bloated contracts to players whose performance suddenly and rapidly declined, i.e. Routt.

Another example is last season’s Eagles who paid huge for FA’s and were almost entirely non-competitive. This includes big money for the so-called “shut down” corner Nnamdi, who only had 3 INT’s, which most good linebackers gain in a single season.

All in all, IMO Reggie should go slow and wait until the big rush is over, and mine the forgotten and overlooked gems. That’s where real value is.

  307. SnB offense defense specialteams Says:

So its all the coaching staff?

The penalties, personal fouls, gap discipline, missed tackles……

These guys should have their time run out. 8 years of the some of the worst defense in NFL history…and the players are not that much of a problem?

and stop with the Texans examples….they got very good YOUNG players flying around all over that defense….YOUNG guys that actually bring some production to the field and not just a bunch of potential and “time in the tub”

  308. Raider O Says:

I agree with you S&B. TK is a good player, had more sacks than Wimbley last year, but we don’t need another pass rushing DT since we have Seymour, Houston, and Bryant. Spending that money on TK can be used to upgrade and improve our secondary, and we can use it to add a DE. The only pass rushing DE on the roster is Matt S.

Go young. $6M for a UT that may only do marginally better than the young guys is not smart.

Take that money and the $4M from Wimbley and find a linebacker and a serviceable NT. Corner as well.

I like to trade TK to the Eagles for CB Dominque R Cromartie. They have Nnamdi & Samuel too. They can afford to trade a CB, and improve their DL. You need to have good pass rushers in the AFC west. Eli, Romo, Vick, RG3.

I was never a fan of this defense from start. After watching those seemingly impossible collapses in repeated games…I am done with them.

I don’t want to see new coaching get them right. Just move them along…get a trade if you can and just whiteboard that defense.

I know MANY on here don’t agree with me on this..but I am done hoping these guys stop the mistakes.

Even with Marshall they weren’t that good and got burnt when it mattered.

Some say to just do some remodeling….I say gut the building to the frame and rebuild.

As for what type of players….its garbage time for replacements this year….but for $10MM? I think they can do some damage for $10M…That would be the freed up money for THIS year….can also do the bonus game etc…..and guraranteed money if they can find a really good player.

Its all upside from my perspective. Next year will be the year to find an impact player or two….this year is just about getting by

Raiders have about 10m cap right now. That is counting Wimbley’s 11m against the cap. If Kam was released any day before saturday the Raiders would pay 6.5m to him and receive 4.5m in cap room

    14.5m cap they would have

That was the worst defense in the league last year….not one m’fer could make a play, a sack, a pressure….nothing.

Get’em out of here and build a culture of discipline and accoutibility from scratch

  337. Raider O Says:

Exactly S&B. That’s what I was thinking. Add a young NT in the draft. I dont think Travis Ivey will make the final roster.

  338. R8derdiehard Says:

Anyone hear anything about shaughnessy. Is he 100% healthy? I think we realy missed out on him last year.

  339. J Hill Says:

I agree we have some solid depth at DT, but I think we need to see what type of base defense we are going to run before we talk about getting rid of certain guys.

Kelly is better than Houston as a so called 3 tech.

I’m on record for switching to the 3-4 with Bryant and Seymour as DEs. Then I’d have no problem trading Kelly. But if we stay with the 4-3, we need to keep him.

  340. Raider O Says:

    J,

I think we will draft a DE, but you are right about the DL. It will not be that effective against the run. As S&B suggested, a good option with that DL is to move Bryant inside in passing situations, and have another player at LDE position. I hope Brodine can be that guy. He was tendered for a reason. I think the reason is lack of depth at that position, but it’s not enough to tender a player. Brodine must have potential.

Romac is an ILB for a 3-4 defense. Why are people so upset that he’s not very good as a “Mike” MLB. It’s a totally different position with a different set of required skills. If for no other reason, we need to go 3-4 with Curry & Romac as the ILB’s and get two new OLB’s.

This just in: Romac will NEVER be a Mike MLB. It’s not in his genes.

  376. Thec Says:

SnB, you know I agree with you 100%. I would run anything that has to do with, including the D side of the practice field.

We are going to be hamstrung with UDFA’s this season becuase we spent several picks on QB’s and the like. No worries though, i beleive RM will incover some gems, that we can be proud of.

That game has to resonate with RM on how bad the Whole D really was. thst includes ALL the coaches, and ball boys.

That game probably bordered on making Reggie almost embarrassed to take this gig.

Everybody on his staff at GB saw it too.

That first half was an embarrassment to all professionals who have played the game; past and present.

I think the GB fans were even insulted.

Gio, Boyd, and Sheppard were not $ players.

Don’t worry, those guys will be upgraded next year.

  387. JB Says:

Here’s a new concept that Oakland may start using:

Using players in their proper positions of play.

Granted many players are flexible enough to play multiple positions. But undoubtedly, they will excel at a given position. An example is Romac ILB 3-4 defense; Seymour RDE 3-4 defense; Wiz 2.0 Center, Houston DT 4-3 defense; Bryant DE 4-3 defense; etc. The point being is that we will get more from our players if we play them in their best possible position.

Bresnahan is gone so at least we don’t have that albatross hanging over our head. He alone was responsible for much of our poor defensive play last year. TK did what he was told to do so don’t step on his sack because he was following orders.

  388. SnB offense defense specialteams Says:

    Jhill,

The secondary got beat, but those QBs didn’t look flustered either…still couldn’t stop the run despite all the focus and then the dumb@@@ penalties.

In my uninformed opinion, this year is about DMAC staying out of the tub and Carson Palmer playing like an elite and not just good QB.

    That’s beginning, middle and end.

The defense? Junk…no clutch, no sense of urgency, no discipline, no fundamentals…and just a bunch of excuses.

5 guys making money and no one could go beyond average.

But he’s not living up to his billing and until/unless he does, I’m going to criticize him. Don’t see the problem with that.

    ————————————————————

Well this morning, you’ve teamed up with the president of the why did replace Morrison for that bum McClain club.

I agree with Thec to a degree.

It’s as simple as Rolando McClain is a 3-4 ILB not a 4-3 Mike. 2 completely different positions. Comparing him to Ray Lewis or Patrick Willis is unrealistic, imo.

    ++++++++++++++++++++++++++

Heh, I was never on board with keeping Morrison instead of McClain, I think RRS sails that ship alone ;)

I do agree with what you say: McClain hasn’t been being used to best advantage. And I’ve never compared him with Ray Lewis or Patrick Willis….let’s play him as a 3-4 ILB (which is what Lewis & Willis play) before making comparisons.

I still maintain that even though he’s not best suited to a 4-3 MLB, he still needs to be more of an impact player.

Jerome Boyd, Lito Sheppard and Matt Giordano are still on the roster.

Boyd isn’t on the roster. The Raiders declined to make him an offer.

It makes sense why some are antsy over seeing the Raiders do nothing but cut guys during the free agency frenzy.

Think of why you liked sports in the first place. As a little kid did u care whether a team was doing the wise, practical thing by NOT going after big stars? No.

The Raiders start off 2-7 and there’s gonna be a heck of a lot of guys saying “Well at least with Al, it was fun. He went after the big (although sometimes past their prime) FA’s and at least we had some hope going into the season”.

“Maybe you’ll like winning better” is the response to those that say they “miss” Al’s wheeling and dealing.

Well if that “winning” doesn’t start right quick, it’ll be hard to convince any of those that Reggie’s “do nothing” approach is the right way.

Carr is good. But what is the likelihood of him living up to that contract and Dallas not asking him to restructure after the next couple or be cut? Like I said, Carr is good. And maybe he did get paid according to what the “current” market dictates, but man, I still feel they overpaid and that his production will not match that contract. Carr would have been nice to have, but I dont think he would have made or broken our season. Im glad to see Reggie Not throwing dollars out. Im more interested in seeing his talent evaluation. Like I said, Im glad Reggies taking a waiting approach. If someone would have done the same for the Browns, they would have easily found someone to replace Patterson, for WAY less. Patterson used to get burned a lot, and now they may convert him to Safety. So 6 mil guaranteed to a CB who you know cant cover well, so you want to switch him to Safety, where he MIGHT pan out?

Take your time Reggie. The only GOLD out there is Mario Williams and Manning, and neither are coming here. A lot of GOOD players being paid like GREAT players, and these teams dishing out these contracts will be scrambling to restructure or cut a lot of these same players in the next year or two. There are plenty of talented hidden gems in the NFL, that play for every team, every season. A good evaluator can find them. Hopefully thats what Reggie will do.

Operating as the replacement for Pro Bowl tight end Zach Miller last year, Boss signed a four-year, $16 million contract last year.

    @Bcz

thats what i’m thinking! Knapp is going to take an already-good offense and make it dominant.

the defensive players will get a second chance and be given proper system & schemes. plus legit coaching. Wimbley is gone as a product of his contract (thanks Al!) and the other guys we lost were addition by subtraction imo. We enter the draft looking for depth and BigMac has 5 picks plus a plethora of undrafted kids. I think we’re sticking with a 4-3 defense this year so that all we’ll need to find is a starter quality OLB (wimbley’s replacement) and 2 corners. If we go 3-4 add NT and ILB to that list

Get out your guns and aim them at me. I think we should go cheap on defense and just re-sign Groves for the starting OLB job and persue our DB’s in the draft to compete with DVD & Chekwa. Like you said, we’re going to outscore a bunch of teams. Plus I think mad scientist Jason Tarver is going to cook up some wild things and confuse a bunch of OC’s & QB’s

Old pal Steve Spagnuolo, now New Orleans’ defensive coordinator, might show interest if Bartell can pass physicals. Mar 12 – 5:11 PMSource: Brad Biggs on Twitter

Of course Bartell hasn’t had an interception since the 2008 season, so a lot of the stat obsessed semi-pros would hate it.
    ———————————————–
Bartell did get the Nnamdi treatment with the Rams sometimes. Teams wouldnt go to his side. Before the neck injury, Bartell would be by far the best CB available.

    ++++++++++++++++

Yep, but it was that reason that caused a lot of people to dump on Nnamdi as overrated despite massive evidence to the contrary. But let’s not get THAT debate started again.

    My realistic FA wish list:
    1- CB Tracy Porter
2- OLB Leroy Hill or Wesley Woodyard
    3- RT E Winston
4- C resign Satele (no more than $2 million per year)
5- DT Bunkley or Franklin (no more than $2 million per year)

It can be done, and it will not cost us a lot.

I like Porter, he’s just injury prone

    ***

    @DMAC

what makes a guy “injury prone” ?

he’s missed 10 games in the last 3 years

    played in 38/48

    he’s only 25 years old
    =============

In my book, if can’t finish off the season w/ out missing like 4+ games a year. Than your injury prone.

In 14 games in 2011, Porter made 52 tackles and intercepted one pass. The 14 games marks the injury-prone Porter’s most as a pro in his fourth season. Yet, he managed fewer tackles than either of the previous two seasons, in which he played in only 12 games apiece. Towards the end of the year, Porter was being pushed for playing time by Patrick Robinson.

Like I said, I like Porter, but he’s injury prone. (I would still roll the dice w/ him, but break the bank.)

  819. Raider O Says:

I also think we should call the Eagles, and ask if they are interested in trading CB Dominique RC for DT Tommy Kelly. We need a CB, and they need athletic DL that can create a lot of pressure. NFC east QBs: Eli (2 SBs), Romo (good QB who can run), Vick (Freakish Athlete), and RG.
They also have Nnamdi & Samuel. It can happen.

    ==================================

He’s a big cover corner. Was the stabilizing force in their secondary the last few years. In other words good player. Not much of an interception threat, but certainly a good veteran cover guy. Who then broke his neck. Let’s see if he can pass a physical.

On Bartell: “He is known for his cover skills, but he is not a real interception threat. He has eight interceptions in his career.”

Kinda sounds like a description that fit a guy named Nnamdi. If I recall, he was actually pretty good ….

Looking at his stats that last few years I see two other Nnamdi-esque things as well. He averages only about one pass defended per game and he has a ton of tackles, most of them solo. That means that either he’s a real tight cover corner that QBs don’t like to throw at and he’s an very good tackling CB in run support, OR it could mean that he lets the WRs catch everything in front of him and then makes the sure tackle.

This article is a little old, but note that at the end of the 08-09 season, in a detailed breakdown this author had Bartell rated as the #7 overall CB in the league: http://www.operationsports.com/forums/pro-football/289299-top-50-cbs-nfl.html
