Former St. Louis Rams cornerback Ron Bartell is scheduled to visit the Raiders today, according to an ESPN.com report.
Bartell, 30, spent his first seven NFL seasons with the Rams, where he started 65 games. However, he played in only one game last season because of an injury.
The Raiders are in need of help at cornerback in light of the release of No. 1 cornerback Stanford Routt last month. As of now, second-year players DeMarcus Van Dyke and Chimdi Chekwa are the projected starters, unless defensive coordinator Jason Tarver decides to follow through with the plan to convert Michael Huff from free safety to cornerback.
The Raiders have yet to meet with any players since free agency started Tuesday. They supposedly intend to meet with Houston Texans guard Mike Brisiel, as well, though that hasn’t been confirmed.
In other news, the 49ers are set to sign former Raiders special team standout Rock Cartwright, as long as he passes his physical.
Cartwright made it clear that he wanted to return to the Raiders for a third season. It appears as if the Raiders had little, if any, interest in continuing the marriage.
