Former Raider signs with Patriots
By Steve Corkran
Saturday, March 17th, 2012 at 4:11 pm in Oakland Raiders.
Raiders defensive end Trevor Scott is the latest to follow the well-worn trail from Oakland to New England, as he signed with the Patriots today.
In recent seasons, the Patriots have traded for or signed numerous former Raiders, including defensive end Derrick Burgess, running back LaMont Jordan, wide receiver Doug Gabriel, quarterback Andrew Walter and most recently cornerback Sterling Moore.
Scott spent his first four NFL seasons with the Raiders and shined in the early going. However, he wasn’t the same after he suffered a torn ACL against the Pittsburgh Steelers late in the 2010 season.
He posted only seven tackles last season as a seldom-used end. He is versatile enough to play outside linebacker, which no doubt enticed the Patriots into taking a flier on him today.

March 17th, 2012 at 4:22 pm
The Patriots always sign our utility scrub guys and turn them into “Superstars”. I really dislike the Patriots! I will be thrilled to the bone when Bellicheat and his Patriots “heyday elite” days “best team that ever exisited” in NFL history days are over for good! With that being said Congrats are in order for Trevor. lol
March 17th, 2012 at 4:23 pm
Scott was one of my favorites. Too bad he got hurt. His first two seasons, he was actually doing much better than Chris Long. Bummer…
March 17th, 2012 at 4:24 pm
Watch, Scott will have a great year.
March 17th, 2012 at 4:28 pm
Was Winston scheduled to meet with us too?
March 17th, 2012 at 4:29 pm
Well there goes Eric Winston, he signed with the Queefs…FML!!!!!, Well maybe we’ll get collins from cincinnati or Bell from Buffalo
March 17th, 2012 at 4:31 pm
Scott will be cut by week 4 of the pre season.
March 17th, 2012 at 4:43 pm
The end.

Late Winter Raiders wish-list:
#1: Bring in more proven — yet healthy — Cornerbacks.
#2: Make sure MBush29’s replacement is ready to go…but, not just an unproven talent like TaiJones (who could be great). Better yet, find a way to keep MB29.
#3: Find the LB’s that will best fit the new system.
#4: DT/NT help. Yesterday.
#5: Sign another versatile, journeyman O-Lineman or three.
#6: Bring in a YOUNG/quick veteran WR (with hands)like Manningham.
#7: QB. Find out if David Garrard is healthy enough to play. NO to Leinart (his arm, and his lack of leadership skills). The #2 QB is likely to see regular-season action…get a real one.
#8: A “designated” pass-rush specialist…they come in handy. He can even be a new…
#9: …DE who can hold the edge.
#10: A big, yet fast, DB who can jump from Safety to LB to CB, depending on scheme/need.
March 17th, 2012 at 4:55 pm
Burgess: Did nothing in NE.
Gabriel: Cut by NE and we got him back.
Jordan: Part of a RB-by-committee.
Walter: Cut in preseason.
Moore: Meh.

I used to be fond of Mike Bush until I realized how handicapped the OC is with plays when he’s in–he won’t, or can’t block. That means that when he’s in, the other team can be almost sure the ball is going to him, either a running play or he’s the guy on an outlet.

Jason Allen signs with the Bengals. I wonder if that means it’s down to the Saints and the Raiders for Tracy Porter?
I have a feeling that Porter is too expensive for us right now, but you never know.

DLF,
Reece is a RFA who received a 2nd round tender. Same as Bryant. I’m not sure what kind of tender did Brodine and McCann receive.

One of the best or most exciting facets about Reggie McKenzie as GM btw, is that in years past, when the draft was over, so many of the interesting or key positional undrafted players were being picked up by every other franchise but the Raiders. I can see Reggie excelling in this regard especially this year, with only about 3-4 draft picks he has.
March 17th, 2012 at 5:49 pm
Really wanted Winston. he is a quality RT regardless of the system & a locker room leader. Have to hope the Chefs don’t come together. So far they’re signing everyone they want.
How are the Raiders going to address the dearth of playmakers on “d?” Another season of “if the offense doesn’t score @ least 35 it’s lights out?” Hmmm. . .
March 17th, 2012 at 5:50 pm
Reece did get 2 RT. He’s awesome, I hope the new coaching staff utilizes his multiple skills.
March 17th, 2012 at 5:53 pm
The Raiders had no other option at RB last year other than Bush. Jones out. DMAC out. Period.
Bush is twinkle toes in short yardage. This Raider fan will not miss him.
March 17th, 2012 at 6:02 pm
Bush will never amount to anything. He had his chances with us, but he would not take advantage of them because his pride was wounded. Reggie knows this guy is not a football player, and I agree.

People will reach at anything to make it seem like Al couldn’t find Players.
Relatively speaking, few undrafted guys ever make any impact at all in the NFL…but, Al Davis’ record of finding late round / undrafted FA talent is pretty hard to criticize — he was one of the best talent-evaluators the League ever saw. It was his early-round strikeouts that killed us more than anything…but it wasn’t for a lack of trying.
March 17th, 2012 at 6:08 pm
PFW doesn’t know sh*t about anything.

March 17th, 2012 at 6:14 pm
So we should blame Al for all the early round busts, and credit someone else for finding Bush, Moore, Branch, Chaz, etc….
Al was a control freak. If he was involved in the early rounds, then you better believe he was involved in everything else including later rounds and URFAs.
March 17th, 2012 at 6:14 pm
Twocents can’t have it Twoways…either Al was in charge or he wasn’t.

March 17th, 2012 at 6:20 pm
Al was a genius once. But that was a looooonnnng time ago. Thank goodness RM is in charge now.
If Bush was highly regarded by the people that ACTUALLY get paid to hire talent, he’d be gone by now.

***********************
Hi TJ, good to see you are back.
My comment to yours is that we in here have probably seen more of MBush and his shortcomings. When DMac went down MBush had two good games. I think that’s because there wasn’t all that much tape on him. After those two games he tanked the next 5 games. From what I can see, he can’t or won’t block in pass protection. He’s a real liability for our QB’s well being. Additionally, he can’t get to the edge on runs. On swing pass he’s OK but when they stack the box with 8, he’s stuffed. He terrible at the LOS unless there’s a hole a truck could drive through. He’s not a banger and goes down far too easy at the LOS.
I was a big MBush fan early on but, in my book, he’s proved that he’s not a legitimate #1 RB. When he starts, he runs out of gas far too early and he seems to stay away from hitting unless it’s against a smaller DB. He simply does NOT run with authority.
I’d like us to give Mike Tolbert a try as Bush’s replacement. Short of that, Reggie has 2 other RB’s signed that I don’t know much about. They both have Bush size. Could be we are already set for #2 RB and the ans don’t know about it yet.
March 17th, 2012 at 6:27 pm
You don’t have to ’sell’ me on Al.
What I referred to was that we wouldn’t work out, especially in certain key positions that particular year, as many players as other teams would bring in.
With so few picks this year, Reggie will especially be more thorough with the undrafted player pool, and not neglecting any positions.

Then, others point out that Al would never concede ANY personnel decisions to somebody else (and why should he…he’s the GM!), and you melt-down.

The going rate for a guy like MBush29 (proven, durable, reliable) is around $3.5 – 4 Million per year on average. $10-12 Million-ish guaranteed, with $3.5+ per year on a 4-yr deal would do it. Not too many FA RB’s out there worth that, or much more than that.
Bring me Matt Forte (and trade DMC for a late 1st and a 3rd)…or bring back MBush29 as DMC’s stablemate!

When Tolbert gets it at the 1, he takes it in for the score. MBush is not very good in close quarters. He had one time that I recall where he had 3 attempts from the one but couldn’t get it in. That’s unacceptable. Zach Crockett he’s NOT.

Wimbley was 5th? Talk about overrated.
Probably dod so to substantiate where he eventually winds up. . .but what a reach. . .seven sacks in TWO games? Shut out in most games of importance! And the Sack against the Jets was against Wayne Hunter on a blown assignment. . .not to wish him any ill will. . .but he was known as a “hot & cold” player (mostly cold) with the Brownies. . .

Trevor Scott was without question the worst player on the defense last season.
New England did him a favor.
March 17th, 2012 at 6:59 pm
Wimbley cut was much needed.
Lamar Houston had 1 tackle for every 11.5 snaps on the field (only player better was Branch with 1 every 10/and he plays both sides of the field).
Houston didn’t have many sacks, but that’s only because Wimbley reduced down to defensive end in passing situations (with his only 2 pass rushing techniques) and Oakland took Houston off the field.
Look for Lamar to have a much improved year.
So far, the off-season moves have been spot on!

#26–All you have to do is watch the games. Go back and watch film. Bush seems not to know the slightest about blocking technique, or worse yet, he seems not to care about learning. To learn would mean teams might not view him as their featured back. In the past, not knowing how to block meant he could say, “You want me to be a fullback? But, fullbacks have to block, and that’s not my strength, you know?”
Seriously, any athlete who actually wants to learn how to block just moderately well can do so, but wanting to learn is the key.

Bush blocks just fine when he isn’t tired.
Last season he was the starter for the second half of the season and got lazy too often because he wasn’t in as good as shape as he needed to be.
For example, in the first San Diego game, he had a 20 yard run, the next play, the Raiders play action pass, and Bush missed his block, causing Palmer to throw a pick….

Even just recently, if only Al could have taken Rodgers in that trade, things could’ve been much better. Sure, no guarantee Rodgers would be the same Rodgers, but we’d not have wasted a pick on Russell, and thus more picks for Palmer, would’ve had Rodgers throwing to Calvin Johnson, probably wouldn’t have been such a coaching carousel, Kiffin maybe stayed longer, persevered more and been more patient with Al.

AD should have been sued by his minority partners and removed from his 100% managerial position, years ago. The minority partners own 40% of the Raider organization which, btw is a general partnership.
Grounds for removal in a lawsuit would have been oppression, negligence, and wanton and willful acts against the partnership.
Possibly AD could possibly have ruled incompetent mentally, since his actions suggest that. The bar is not so high to prove incompetence regarding a majority partner whose actions injure the partnership and minority partners.
AD had little idea of what he was doing, as evidenced by his actions; he seemed to be in a time warp somewhat, throwing back to the 60’s. As far as “going down fighting” I doubt AD even knew where he was, as opposed to forming and implementing a cogent plan to return to greatness.
Why do you think the Raiders have been a laughing stock for the past 10 seasons, and have had only 9 winning seasons out of the last 29??

TE is said to be important to Greg Knapp’s O so he may look for someone who fits his system cheap. Lotsa other needs
CP talking up Ausberry a lot and no doubt great athlete great potential. But I googled him and every spring practice at USC it was the same deal and he never won a starting job there. Showed flashes on special teams kick coverage and a few spectacular catches. Boom or bust?
Gordon rep. lazy in college but physically resembles former All pro guard Randall McDaniel. Can line up at blocking FB or TE. Shaky catching but a load to bring down
Myers journeyman / ST already on roster may fit fine for Knapp’s Offense don’t know ask Knapp
Marcel Reece can do things TEs do + super dynamic player, could still improve in “little things” such as working with QB esp as safety valve receiver when QB in trouble. Knapp must be cooking some things up for him. Could line up as TE some plays
Lots of possibilities already on roster, if they fit what Knapp wants to do. Seems like we have much greater needs than another TE

Spoken like only a blog-lawyer can speak it.
OK, Perry Mason…how would those partners prove that Al was bad for the corporation, when all he did was make it money?? From his $25,000 investment-on, the Raiders have increased in value…to now be worth somewhere between $500,000,000 and $800,000,000. And that’s without a new stadium, or superstar QB to draw from.
Any current partner unhappy enough with AL to sue him, was smart enough to think twice (or more) about it. Frivolous, and unwarranted lawsuits are expensive…and they would’ve cost those hypothetical litigants dearly. Al would’ve detroyed them, as easily as Hardline’s hard lines get destroyed in here.

I totally get what you’re saying about Hue, the drop from Miller to Boss was crazy. However, I’m talking about a former first round offensive weapon that Carson could work with to get these young guys(Ausberry) headed in the right direction. Knapp used Dreessen and Olsen to the tune of 82 catches last year. Clark has been able to produce with a loaded offense.

I saw JaMarcus’s first interview as a Raider by Greg Papa and, to say the least, was overcome with feelings of dread.
MaMarcus spoke in this weird ghetto eubonics proclaiming (very hard to understand) that he would take the Raiders all the way to the Superbowl. It was obviously there was little intelligence there.
Papa was praising him profusely and Russell took it in a self-congratulatory manner that was alarming to say the least.
The rest of the story we already know.
I am not sure how ranking staff members and AD could have been so incompetent not to know Russell was joke after talking to him one time.

I think every team has depth issues at certain spots, last year it was on defense,CB and LB, But very good depth on Dline and for the most part on Offense. according to the chart above of the top 100 FA, I believe there were 8 raiders on that list.
All those players were brought here by Al, either through the draft are free agency, he was really doing great in both those areas the last couple years, but you could say he still loved paying the players he believed in a little over market value. So to say he lost his eye for talent is just plain wrong.

Dave — It made sense to draft JaMarcus. Some team was going to do it, and it was going to happen in the 1st round. There weren’t too many concerns known about Russell, and loads of upside potential.
Al just swung mightily and missed on JaMarcus…who didn’t even have the football smarts to overcome his lack of academic smarts. Worse yet…JaMarcus didn’t have the character and pride that Al saw in him. Al blew it…JaMarcus was the biggest draft bust in NFL history — and not because he couldn’t play.
March 17th, 2012 at 8:44 pm
Hayes, first of all the Raiders aren’t a corporation, the Raiders are a general partnership. AD formed a corporation, his alter-ego, and held the position of majority partner within that corporation.
You make a point about AD raising the value of the Raiders. By the time he became oppressive to the minority through negligent and willful acts, AD’s value raising days were over, and the value of the Raiders was in a dramatic freefall culminating where it is today at 31st in the NFL, according to Forbes.
The easiest way for his partners to prove oppression would be do demonstrate years of destructive acts AD committed damaging the partnership and the minority. We all know what those acts were; they are beyond the scope of this post.
Also, FYI, a majority partner cannot bludgeon the minority with litigation just to keep them in line and maintain control: that in and of itself is oppression.

Hayes, 137,
Hayes,
I am very serious that your post regarding TE’s was excellent. You are the only poster here who has keen enough insight to realize the ramifications of Hue’s underuse of our TE’s and other positions as well.
Time and again Hue would force feed DHB the ball, or run Bush up the middle for no gain while a wealth of talent sat on the bench. It turned our offense into a one dimensional unit.
Why do you think I congratulated you on that post ???

As I understand it, this limits their options to signing with us or
refusing to sign the tender

R8,
Bro, go overseas and experience it. I did the Thailand and VN thing for a few yrs after my divorce. Thailand is frickin crazy. The best part about being single now is you can afford to do things you couldnt when you were in your early 20’s. I once was on the same flight as 4 Americans passing through SF on their way back to So America. They all said So America had nothing on Thailand. But you should check it out for yourself. My good buddy is doing the Cuba thing right now via Cancun. He said the women are the best in this hemisphere.

Hardline — I don’t know what “acts” you’re talking about. Every team in the NFL is worth more now than they were even 9-years ago (which seems to be the cut-off for you, hater)…and Al’s fingerprints have been all over every major League business decision until his death.
In fact…Al was widely credited with helping “save” the NFL as we know it on more than one occasion…and his Labor Relations skills were credited with helping solve a few management/labor crises (in your lifetime, even!).
Al wasn’t perfect. We get it. He’s dead. Move along already.

Hayes AD didn’t need to draft JaBonehead. He could have traded that pick, traded down in the draft, and gotten true value for that pick. Instead it cost the Raiders millions upon millions and at least 3 wasted years.
Lance didn’t want him. And if Lance didn’t want him that says a lot about Lance and AD.

Why all the hate for Marcel Reece? He’s not a consistently tough blocker at least not yet but he’s the only lead blocker we have fast enough to get out in front of impatient McFadden and helped spring him on quite a few big runs. Some of these so called blocking FBs can’t do nothin’ else and often I see these pot bellied top heavy “blue collar blocking machines” belly flopping and missing blocks on any target moving faster than a snail. Better entertainment than football… Marcel can do a lot of things and much more with a little refinement including
Marcel Reece can do things TEs do + super dynamic player, could still improve in “little things” such as working with QB esp as safety valve receiver when QB in trouble. Knapp must be cooking some things up for him. Could line up as TE some plays
That said, Knapp has liked fat top heavy belly flopping FBs in the past…but has he ever had a Marcel and 7 months to figure how to use him before?
And isn’t it his old team the Texans that end up cutting their “Pro Bowl” FB every year and/or letting them walk in free agency?
hmm…

Think about what YOU really want. Do you want to be single again, do you want to be single for the rest of your life, or is this just a phase? Think about the future, where you want to be in life, and decide and choose the best path to get there. Marriage is not easy, and you have to keep working at it. It’s not easy sharing a life with another person, but it gets better the more you work on it. Try counseling.

Rough estimates given age, performance last season, etc. More than anything, I don’t think the Raiders should spend more than that on any of these players. Without much salary cap room, the Raiders aren’t really in the position to gamble on many mid- or lower-tier FAs. If the Raiders can find any of the above players for around those prices, they should go for it. If not, they should simply wait for the draft and then see what their needs are.

I think the new regime will only get guys they think are good values. A lot of that is getting players who will fit scheme and so far the guys they’re going after seem to be players that the coaches are familiar with and if the coaches & Reggie Mac have good judgement they should know what they’re worth. So I figure if they don’t sign these guys up then the player must be asking too much $ or else we got a bigger problem with the decision makers that FA signings won’t solve. Of course nobody guesses right all the time and luck is important.
I like signings like Bartell calculated gambles coming off injury, reasonable contract, beast if healthy.
The salary cap issue can be manipulated enough to get some guys in who can compete. Reggie Mac cut the fat and he has until July/August/September to fill out the roster. There’s plenty of FAs, the draft, UDFA, June 1 cuts, etc between now and then
I’m sure they’re considering many of the players on your list, its actually reasonable my bad
some of the earlier suggestions in thread were pretty grandiose, seems like positions where there are several in house options we will have to do with what we’ve got (by in-house options, I don’t mean free agents who were with us last year though. I mean guys who are under contract with Raiders now). I did want to get the discussion thread back to what our priorities are and discuss that instead of off topic subjects and water under the bridge
We can’t have everything, what are our options and priorities?

He only has one active game in NFL, 2010, surprisingly a start, but with Cleveland Browns + 1 tackle in has brilliant career–so far. If the nfl.com stats can be believed. Aig,
Reece as a HOF’er; that’s a bold statement. He is good but it seems only for a few plays per game. Maybe that is because Hue didn’t use him correctly. It seemed to me watching him last season he was capable of several big play, but after that the opponent defense adjusted to shut him down.
March 17th, 2012 at 11:09 pm
The only way Reece make it as a hall of fame TE is if they coach him to run some choice routes. Curls, posts, outs, and crossing routes……not these BS timing based outdated concepts…..
Can we please move into the future?
March 17th, 2012 at 11:12 pm
Am I remembering correctly didn’t Marcel Reece get signed in 2008 by Raiders as rookie UDFA and tried at TE but then moved to FB (but also lined up at TE in some sets)…and wasn’t Greg Knapp the Raiders OC in 2007 and 2008? I do know Greg Knapp is OC again now, and Marcel Reece remains listed as a FB on the roster. But they only list guys at one position and it’s not always current. I also know the new coaches can’t have much contact with players till April (incl. playbook distribution) and mini camp not till May, preseason July or is it early August now? And it doesn’t count till September.

**********************************************
Glad we have gotten the discussion back on track
The immediate future is Knapp’s offense.
My understanding is that Knapp is fairly flexible but likes the QB to run a lot of bootlegs and moving pocket stuff and that a lot of the design is to get some underneath receiving options open as checkdowns if deeper routes covered.
This requires the TE, FB, (even more than the other receivers) to work well with the QB
Marcel Reece can do things TEs do + super dynamic player, could still improve in “little things” such as working with QB esp as safety valve receiver when QB in trouble. Knapp must be cooking some things up for him. Could line up as TE some plays
So IMO “little things” like working well with QB when “QB in trouble” have not been Reece strongpoints at least AS HE HAS BEEN USED LAST 2 YEARS
this imagined or real deficiency can easily be improved upon with coaching both coaching Reece and designing a good scheme
coach ‘em up, Knapp

Ummm…wrong.
Here’s where you Al haters just don’t get it. It was his team, and he took it where it went — high and low. And…he left this earth a far richer man than when he entered it…literally and figuratively. Along the way, he made his partners hundreds of millions of dollars…and he made a lot of young men rich beyond anyone’s wild expectations.
As a human being, Al did something most of us will never do — he left a major, legendary impact on his profession (not just his company), and on those around him…mostly a solid legacy, with many friends and loyal followers that can be counted in the hundreds if not thousands.
Al had a lucky, crazy life that we might be fortunate to have for ourselves. The fact some of you can’t let your hatred and disagreements with the guy go, long after his passing, is pretty sad. For you.

@ 208…
Play Action is fine and dandy…
Lets face facts…to win in this league you have to be able to score on Offense late in games to win games…and to do that means you have to Pass the Ball when the defense knows you’re going to pass the ball….
If Coach Knapp wants to be successful…he will move into the future and help Carson Palmer have success by implementing some new concepts through the air….
The ZBS with play action might get us to the playoffs…but that ain’t the goal…the goal is to win it all….to win it all you have to be able pass the ball when the game is OTL….PERIOD

looks like both of these players were signed before Reggie Mac came on board. I believe at least Lonyae Miller was on practice squad. I believe he has been one of those players that has nearly made a few teams final cut (incl. Dallas Cowboys I believe) and that coming out of Fresno State a few years ago he was big fast scored lotsa TDs and productive in limited touches playing behind Charger’s #1 draft pick Matthews.
It’s my understanding that Jackson is a tweener blocking FB / RB with some run skills
ie both should compete very well in training camp but are more longshot to make an impact in 2012 regular season than guys you could pencil into roster at this point–based on their resumes. I haven’t seen em play. Nothing matters till they start the hitting in training camp. A few guys with this kinda background make it every year, a lot don’t…gotta see their game
March 17th, 2012 at 11:41 pm
Moving into the future means concepts such as:
- Some back shoulder throws…something the Raiders NEVER did last season….and considering the amount of times the go deep and run the 9 route….it’s the perfect change-up…yet we never once even tried it…
- Choice Routes….routes designed to be run by the slot and/or TE designed to beat specific coverage…..to do this…Palmer and his receivers need to work the 7 on 7 in practice all day long….and not just focusing their attention on the coverage, but also the specific techniques and alignments they face inside of those coverages
- More Screens to WR’s to dictate to the corners to play tighter…thereby opening up the deeper routes….

In the NFL no RB could start if he couldn’t block, MBush played on 85-90% of the snaps after DMC went down. If he couldn’t block that would be impossible………period
************************************************
good point,he must have been able to block a little to get playing time
tell Taiwan Jones. Have you ever watched him try to block? Coach him up. (some may also say tape him up and /or line him up in the slot more). But wouldn’t it be great to get a guy who runs like Tony Dorsett on the field?
Why all the hate for Bush? A few weeks ago some people (not me) thought they should spend $7.7 to franchise him for backup RB position, now he’s worthless even when our starting back can’t stay healthy.
When I watched Bush last year he was off to subpar (for him) start as a short yardage and goalline runner and was averaging like 2.0 yards per carry then DMac got hurt and he was almost as productive as DMac for a lot more than 2 games (I think more like 4 or 5) including going all BEAST in a monster game where he broke Raider’s all time combined rushing-receiving yardage. Then he wore down, along with the rest of the team, and finished with 4.2 yds per carry since taking over for DMac and 3.8 for whole season. When I watched him his blocking including blitz pickup was inconsistent-some good, some bad did miss a few blitzes but also put a few pass rushers on their ass
Most people consider him the best RB available on market and as I hear it Bengals are considering signing him — to replace starter Cedric Benson

I saw alot of lonyae miller in college. He wasnt 232 back then, that # might not be right. But was a nice back. The dogs ran him or made him block, he was verry solid at both. Not quite as explosive with jukes and tackle breaking, but he was pretty strong, and fast enough to reach the edge. Worth a look.

One of the best or most exciting facets about Reggie McKenzie as GM btw, is that in years past, when the draft was over, so many of the interesting or key positional undrafted players were being picked up by every other franchise but the Raiders.
$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$
Tommy Kelly was undrafted
Reece was undrafted
D Bryant was undrafted
3 of our starters last year were undrafted.
========================
James Harrison
Wes Welker
Antonio Gates
London Fletcher
Marques Colston
Courtland Finnegan
that caliber of player….guys you mentioned were JUST good enough to get you to 8-8 (Reece’s story is yet to be finished, though)

- More Screens to WR’s to dictate to the corners to play tighter…thereby opening up the deeper routes…
================
On the back shoulder throws, it would help if CP3 had familiarity with his personnel. I do know he completed 3 red zone TDs 1 to DHB v. Miami, 1 to Jacoby Ford v. the Broncos and 1 to Chaz Schillens in the corner v. the Vikings
its not like they havent thrown a back shoulder fade….
yeah, the WR screen was absent, and so was the TE screen – Gruden did that a bit
They have to get familiar with the ZBS again…
March 18th, 2012 at 12:46 am
Miller can run goal line, probably even better if hes at 232. Its tough to say if he’s ready to back up a guy as injury prone as dmac, but rbs out of fresno under pat hill have been decent in the nfl. Might be one of those cheap but effective zone block backs.
March 18th, 2012 at 12:52 am
Can’t sleep.
Here’s my take on Reece. Antonio Gates/Shannon Shapre were undrafted or drafted late. They were freak tweeners at the TE position. Reece played WR in college. Al made him a FB in the pros. Dude can flat out run when he has the rock. He took it to the house a few times with the wheel route both in preseason (vs SF) and reg season (vs Den). I saw him made some really tough catches last season, like the one from Palmer over the LB’s helmet (vs Den?). As a FB, he is already doing the blocking.
So, he has the speed, weight, blocking, and hands. Not the greatest blocker but good enough. The only thing he doesnt have is ideal height. He is listed at 6-3 while TE’s usually go for 6-5. My hunch is that is why Al made him a FB instead of TE. Aaron Hernandez is listed as 6-2. I’m telling you Reece is a major weapon if we ever move him to the TE position. He is a matchup nitemare for LBs.
March 18th, 2012 at 12:54 am
speaking of fresno st. we should sign billy volek. He is a career backup, he has shown the ability to come mid game or to start. And his talents realy match our new system.. TP can learn alot from a guy with his 6th rd pick mentality.
March 18th, 2012 at 12:57 am
Does anyone know much about what kind of defense our new coaches like to run. Everybody knows that Allen says he’s flexible and wants to run both 3-4 and 4-3 sets, and D Coord Tarver has a 3-4 background (at least recently?)
But a lot of you all are talking about big run stuffing two gap tackle but did Allen do that in Denver last year? I know he ran a 4-3 base set and had penetrating DT Broderick Bunkley right? Wrong? What was the other DT like?
Posters keep ragging on our current DT roster so what up? What kind of players do you think we’re missing?
March 18th, 2012 at 1:00 am
I like reece as a back up rb, starting fb, or as a te.. we cant forget about him as much this yr. Ausberry looks like a nice te prospect too. Glad we didnt go after a big name wr.. more 2 te sets.
March 18th, 2012 at 1:02 am
231. We’re 4-3 untill we get a nt..
March 18th, 2012 at 1:11 am
Marcel Reece is listed as 6-3 but I think he is shorter. I just watched a tube on him scoring a long td and Murphy was running next to him. Murphy looked a lot taller. Murphy is listed at 6-2. Prob why Al didnt make him a TE.
March 18th, 2012 at 1:12 am
For what it’s worth, I think Reece’s listed height is exaggerated. He looks closer to 6′1″ and coming out of college the PFW prospects listing, which is usually reliable, said he’s a shade under 6′1″. But those are just numbers, an inch either way doesn’t make or break a player. Looking at the guy he looks like a true FB body type with a big butt … or a TE or HB body type…doesn’t look like a WR and lacks the foot quickness to beat CB man to man as NFL WR but has plenty there and more to be a matchup nightmare against LB and even many safeties…easy to see why he was not kept at WR though. Even though he is listed as a FB he has lined up at TE on many plays…including some big plays. He can also jump and use his body to shield the ball as a receiver, he can run variety of downfield routes and adjust to the ball and is the best downfield receiving FB in years in NFL. And he does all this at whatever his height is…
March 18th, 2012 at 1:16 am
Def not 6-3. DHB is 6-2 and he looked taller than him on youtube. Khalif Barnes at 6-5 dwarfs Reece. Al Davis was enamored with height, weight and speed. He used to make FB into TE (Todd Christensen) or LB (Mike Jones). I can see why Al made him a FB rather than a TE. I’d be stoked if we can ever make Reece a TE or involve him more in the passing game. Dude is a monster.

obviously but are we still going with two 3-T / penetrating DTs or does Allen want a two gap freight elevator. I guess the NT would double as all that so maybe it doesn’t matter…my point is, beyond the base set (3-4 or 4-3) what are we doin’? Also at LB. I know we ain’t gettin no Von Miller anytime soon.
March 18th, 2012 at 2:24 am
Hmmm….we still need a few more things:
LBs: Any guys under the radar you know of we should get?
RB: What about Tolbert from SD? The dude is a bowling ball, and would complement DMC perfectly…and he has had to fill in as a starter in SD and did pretty well when needed.
C: Any better ideas than Satelle coming back? I guess we could resign Carlisle for cheaper and then move WIZ to Center…because I don’t see any Center’s out there better than Satelle.
Back-up QB: Anyone thing T. Pryor is up to it?

Either way, it’s a smart move by him and his agent. Put a little pressure on the Niners to sh*t or get off the pot. If they end up losing out on Manning AND Smith they will be in a world of hurt and all those WRs they just signed will have been a huge waste of money.

Shame the Raiders couldn’t keep him, but that contract he got was absurd.
March 18th, 2012 at 7:40 am
I wish we could have gotten Myers as well. But his contract is a little rich for a 31 yo. Maybe Wiz II is going to be the center after all?
March 18th, 2012 at 7:41 am
If Satele isn’t re-signed, free agents Jason Brown and Dan Koppen would be the best options for center. Moving Wisniewski over is also an option.
March 18th, 2012 at 7:41 am
I don’t want Satele back in any case, not just because of his recent scrape with the law. He’s addition by subtraction.
March 18th, 2012 at 7:43 am
If the Raiders are going to be emphasizing the ZBS, Satele is far and away the best center available. Strong in space, especially in the run game. Does indeed struggle in pass protection and in short yardage, but truthfully there are no clear upgrades available with Myers and Wells off the market – and those guys got paid way more than the Raiders would have been able to.

March 18th, 2012 at 7:46 am
Satele just killed me on the screen plays sometimes.
I am sure there is some type of timing on screens plays, from when the ball was snapped, to when the lineman release and go downfield to block (probably some 1-thousand-1, 1-thousand-2…..thing).
Sometimes, he would literally snap it, and take off down the field, and by the time the ball was thrown he was cut-blocking some guy 15 yards down the field, for some of the easiest ineligible man downfield penalties you will ever see.
He had to have at least a half dozen of those over the last couple years.
March 18th, 2012 at 7:47 am
Satele is the one guy that you can focus in on when the QB backpeddles. He’s always overwhelmed one-on-one, and can’t hold his ground. He ends up sacking the QB with this back getting pushed backward. If that’s the best that’s left in the NFL, we’re in trouble. He sucks.

Broncos free agent DT Brodrick Bunkley is scheduled to visit the Saints on Sunday, according to Larry Holder of CBSSports.com who cites a source familiar with the situation.
Bunkley started 13 games in Denver last season, compiling 43 total tackles. The Saints have a hole at the starting DT slot next to Sedrick Ellis with Aubrayo Franklin and Shaun Rogers being unrestricted free agents.
March 18th, 2012 at 7:56 am
Brandon Lloyd is an interesting dude.
Heard him on ESPN radio last week, very, very intelligent, both his parents are professors or teachers, and he said he plans on making more money post-football than during his playing career, so he wants to win now.
So, not suprised he went to a Super Bowl team, for a below-market value contract.
March 18th, 2012 at 7:58 am
And it’s why crap teams always overpay to get someone like a Mario Williams. There is a competitive unbalance that exists that allows one team to be perrenially better than others.

——————–
It’s very possible he is.
Jason Brown was a big-time FA signing a few years back. Has struggled ever since. Maybe he could regain his form – he’s still 29.
Dan Koppen has been a solid if unspectacular NFL OG/C for his entire career. But he’ll be 33 soon, so he wouldn’t be a long-term option. Excels in the Patriots’ scheme, which involves quite a bit of zone blocking.
If the Raiders think they have more options at OG than at C (including Stephon Heyer, Zach Hurd, Alex Parsons, or any other UDFA or late-round picks they might acquire), Wisniewski could indeed shift over to C. Wouldn’t be the worst move in the world. In his limited action there last season, he performed very well.
March 18th, 2012 at 8:18 am
Pro Football Focus, “graded” out Wiz very highly as a G, and among the worst in the NFL as a Center.
Although, that is somewhat subjective, and they also had Wimbley as one of the best DE/OLB in the league, so I guess take it with a grain of salt.
March 18th, 2012 at 8:20 am
Pro Football Focus, “graded” out Wiz very highly as a G, and among the worst in the NFL as a Center.
————–
Their grading of Wisniewski is interesting to me, considering he played his two worst games of the season at OG.
The line had its best performances with Heyer at OG and Wisniewski at C. Not sure how Wisniewski specifically graded out in those situations, but the line as a whole flourished with him at C.
March 18th, 2012 at 8:25 am
I wouldn’t know the first thing about “grading” out an offensive lineman, just reporting what they put out there.
I think he can be an elite, multi-Pro Bowl guard, without a doubt. Not as sure that he can do that as a CEnter.
March 18th, 2012 at 8:25 am
For what it’s worth, Wimbley was pretty effective at bringing pressure last season. But he can’t cover, and wasn’t very strong against the run. Too often he took a bad angle and failed to seal off the edge.
Versatile player and was definitely valuable to the Raiders, but not “$10.5 million per year” valuable.

I think we are just scratching the surface of how good Wiz II is going to be. He’s gonnna be an All-Pro someday. At C or G.
March 18th, 2012 at 8:40 am
Remember, that Wiz has only played one season at Center, at that was in 2009 in college for 11 games.
He very well may turn into an elite Center in the NFL, I just think due to his lack of experience, there is a steeper curve to get there.
Like I said, he is ALREADY on his way as a Pro Bowl guard.
He still has a lot of learning to do as a Center.
March 18th, 2012 at 8:43 am
We still need depth at C, Satele or someone else. Satele might be ok as bench guy. Injuries are always part of the game. Might be good insurance, but I’d be just as happy if he’s not in the Raiders plans.
March 18th, 2012 at 8:45 am
Blocking is blocking.
If you’re good at it, G or C shouldn’t matter. Especially if there is no football IQ issue.
March 18th, 2012 at 8:46 am
Carlisle would be a great option to bring back on the cheap. I think he could still be an effective starter if forced back into action.
Would expect a guy like Hurd or Parsons to have a shot at cracking the roster, too. But OT and C need depth. Maybe Heyer can be retained as a swing tackle.
March 18th, 2012 at 8:46 am

What if we brought Carlisle back at a reduced number and went with Wiz-Brisiel-Carlisle as our interior line?

I wouldn’t mind having Barnes back at RT. He played pretty damn well. False starts were certainly an issue though.

Little suprised that M. Bush has gone almost a week into free agency and no rumblings of imminent signings, and the trail seems cold. Wasn’t he supposed to get a chance to be a starter somewhere?
I look at the trio of Bush, Tolbert, and Green-Ellis as a set of dominoes that will each have a cause/effect on the others.
March 18th, 2012 at 8:51 am
Wasn’t it Barnes that had 3 straight false starts on the same series in a game last year. Then he was bench the rest of the game?
March 18th, 2012 at 8:54 am
I think the 3 false starts on Barnes was a preseason game.
As far as guys that get some “run” at Center, since centers make more money and get more accolades, if someone played Center and was any good at it, they would stay there.
Give me a damn Center, not some dude that can play center.

March 18th, 2012 at 9:24 am
For you.
—————————————————-
You subscribe to the Great Men theory of history, which elevates flawed human beings into living deities. Most great leaders benefit to one degree or another from luck and timing, and Al certainly took advantage of both–embellished by his own brand of ruthlessness, which I don’t necessarily begrudge him given what he accomplished from 1963 to around 1985. To me, it was probably justified and put a modest industrial city on the map and, what’s more, created the merged NFL as we know it today.
But your view of history tends to obscure/paper over/forgive flaws, even the most egregious ones that many great leaders ultimately succumb to. In Al’s case it was his hubris, which prevented him from hiring professional staff over the past two decades in anticipation of his eventual succession. He thought he could do it to the very end, when all available evidence–most significantly the team’s record, and the sinking value of the franchise itself–indicated otherwise. He also committed one of the most vile sins of hubris: he instigated petty political battles with players he incorrectly viewed as disloyal, players who only had a differing perspective from him. And these battles hurt the team.
These sins of commission point to a talented man who in his final years lacked perspective, lacked wisdom, and most significantly lacked the courage to plan for his own replacement. He couldn’t do it, and for that sin we fans also paid a price.
March 18th, 2012 at 9:28 am

I rather sign an URFA to start at RT over Barnes.
Barnes was the weakest link on that OL unit.

What’s your beef with Barnes?
Veldheer had more penalties and penalty yardage.
March 18th, 2012 at 9:34 am
I’d say Satele and Carlisle were the weak links.
Literally!

Khalif Barnes,
You are the weakest link. Goodbye!

Have her in the locker room when we are doing roster cuts.
