Raiders not through looking at CBs

By Steve Corkran
Saturday, March 17th, 2012 at 11:39 am in Oakland Raiders.

On the day the Raiders signed veteran cornerback Ron Bartell, they spent some time taking a look-see at another veteran cornerback, Shawntae Spencer.
CSNBayArea’s Matt Maiocco says the Raiders met with Spencer on Friday. If you’re searching for a connection, look no further than Raiders defensive coordinator Jason Tarver, who was with Spencer for seven seasons with the 49ers.
Spencer started 72 of the 98 games he played in for the 49ers, including every game in 2009 and ‘10. However, the 49ers went with Carlos Rogers, Tarell Brown and Chris Culliver ahead of Spencer last season. Spencer appeared in only nine games.
The 49ers released Spencer in a salary-cap move. It’s likely the Raiders could get Spencer for somewhere near the veteran minimum, given his lack of leverage.

Typical McKenzie which is good. Signing very talented but under the radar players. Not flash but substance. I like his way of operating.

  7. RaiderDuck Says:

IF we signed him, our secondary would be set. Bartell and Spencer at CB, backed up by DVD and Chekwa. Huff and Branch at S, backed up by Underwood and Mitchell. Then Reggie can concentrate on two more LBs (minimum), a NT, a LG and backup RB and QB.

  8. exlaraiderseasonticketholder Says:

I like the fact the Raiders are taking their time and not signing and overpaying Javon Walker types.

That’s why he leads in TDs allowed. When it counts, he’s garbage.

  12. J Hill Says:

40 yd run by Tolbert mid way through the 4th qtr was a back breaker.

Defensive formation we had out there, the run was not surprising at all. 3 man line with Wimbley as one of the 3 and Houston standing up as an OLB over gate.

Needless to say Rivers audibled and right right over Wimbley’s side.

Later on, Lito and Gio get abused by Floyd for 6.

I wonder if that one series of plays got all 3 of them cut?

  13. Try Some Reality Says:

The funny thing about some of the cats clamoring for more moves is that they complain about losing the past 10 years, then they turn right around and, in the same breath, ask for more of the same type of moves that made us so bad during those 10 years. lol

Exhibit A: Carl Nicks signed with Tampa Bay for $8 mil/year. Reggie waits two days and gets Brisiel (who’s just as good) for literally HALF the price.

  24. ArtilleryShell Says:

You guys are overrating these guys Bartell and Spencer are not shut down corners or as good as what we lost. Why sign this guy OG Mike Briesel to a $4 mil salary but cut Cooper Carlisle who was slated to earn three. These are stop gap guys designed to carry us thru until we can have control of our own draft picks. Why cut Boss, he wasn’t that bad, didn’t get a lot of opportunities and made some good catches on badly thrown balls. I would be more impressed if he gets these guys on the cheap and I like Reggie McKenzie, but I also liked Hue Jackson tho he had his shortcomings ( overpaying for Palmer, whom I also like) and not. Owing down harder on McClain

  25. ArtilleryShell Says:

Raider duck you really think this Briesel guy is as good as Nicks? I hope ur right

  26. luvmarvhub Says:

    #13- great point

Personally, I think Reggie is doing just what he said he’d do and I appreciate he isn’t a person who plays games. He said when he was introduced as GM that he’d re-evaluated EVERYTHING. He told the press he had to dump out of whack contracts, which he has and is doing. He’s said that he wants to be evaluated himself on the basis of the moves HE makes and he knows he will be held accountable for those moves.

So far, can’t ask for more than what he has done and continues to do.

  27. ArtilleryShell Says:

Was that the run that ended with Tolbert getting pushed out of bounds up the left sideline ?

What was Slowlando doing that play ? Seem to remember him lollygagging after Tolbert and doing a comical, almost hesitant – do I really have to get involved – leap at Tolbert when he didn’t initially go down or step out.

If we’re talking about the same play.

    Slowlando is a joke.

Hey Reggie, do yourself a favor and have JHill send you the tape of Slowlando jogging after FJax in Buff.

Then I want you to watch the 4th down whiff on Stafford with Slowlando. Completely unobstructed view of the play developing right in front of him. Completely unblocked. Nothing but air between Slowlando and the bullseye on Stafford’s chest. And Slomac doesn’t even lay a glove on Stafford. Ask Slowlando WTF he was doing that play and if he realizes that whiff cost the Raids that game and a berth in the playoffs.

ILB in a 3-4 my butt. Cat can’t play. Period.

And if watching his play doesn’t convince you Slowlando is a worthless turd, have a sit down with him and get his version of how he’s taking an ENTIRE WEEK off to supposedly attend a funeral and winds up getting busted for being a wannabe thug jackazz.

You’ll know what to do Reggie.

Addition by subtraction. Cut out the cancer.

    DUMP SLOWLANDO.

I am going to give this guy training camp, and presea and the first 2 games of the year to prove to the NATION he belongs in the NATION. His only saving grace is that he may be an ilb attempting to play mike in a 4-3.

DA, and RM need a back up plan, I would say pick up Joe Mays, or Jemeel McLain. Both or eith could fill mmclains role as both have the insticts heart, and drive to play ilb, or mlb.

  37. J Hill Says:

Should we show film of McClain getting downfield to cover WRs? How does a guy who does not hustle do that?

McClain is not running anyone down from behind. Let’s not kid ourselves here.

Should have definitely made that tackle on Stafford though.

Should have also had about 4 picks that he just flat out dropped. 1 that would have sealed the Buffalo game for sure.

  38. YoungAmerican Says:

Barrett Ruud would be a very inexpensive veteran fallback option of McClain doesn’t progress or somehow manages to regress.

  39. No Lo Says:

    RE 24

I was surprised by the Boss move. I would have thought he’d be the type to restructure and have a better opportunity to make plays under the new staff. Next.

McClain should have been suspended or deactivated for his conduct last year. Does anyone believe Gruden or a Parcells type would have tolerated his lack of judgment? I think not. I recall Gruden cutting David Dunn for his bonehead fumble. He also sent Keyshawn packing for his me first attitude. Hopefully, the new regime will continue releasing the malcontents.

Sideline to sideline speed, and attacking the ball every play.

I dont see that in mcclain, nor do i beleive he is a Leader of men. Just my opinion…

  44. YoungAmerican Says:

I can’t fault McClain for not being able to shed offensive linemen. The defensive line’s job is to prevent them from getting to the second level.

What I DO fault McClain for is standing there flat-footed and waiting for blockers to get to him (for one example, see AP’s TD run from the Vikings game). It’s like he’s still trying to diagnose the play instead of just pulling the trigger.

I agree with you guys. He has only had two years. Hopefully the bulb goes off for him this year. But in the Detroit game you referenced, the very lst play from scrimmage Stafford threw a swing pass to the left flat. Since the Will vacated it was McClains assignment to cover him. He didn’t. Easy pitch and catch that Routt supports about 14 yards down the field and their RB then carries Routt another 8 yards for a gain of 22. On a very simple play. One guy is gone, another to go…

I’m more lenient. I’m going to give you an Incomplete.

You get the benefit of the doubt because you’ve been operating under some cap constraints (just a myth, right Jerry ?) and had to deal with some out of whack contracts.

But I gotta tell you, losing your best pass rusher and number one corner on an already stink to high heaven defense isn’t exactly an auspicious debut.

Got some major work to do Reggie. Just dumping Brez’s sorry azz coordinating isn’t going to get the job done.

Got a paper thin secondary with untested sophomores being counted on, and now the pass rush took a major hit.

    Not good.

We’re also on the verge of losing MBush with no replacement in sight. Lost a good man in Rock Cart.

And worst of all, you’ve got a sorry, slow as molasses, uncommitted punk masquerading as the captain of the LB crew.

The good news is it’s hard to imagine the defense being any worse than it was last year. But somehow I suspect it might be.

God bless you Reggie, you’ve got your work cut out for you.

    ================================================
    Yeah, those really stung.

At the end of the season Hue made an interesting observation. Spoke about how the defensive collapse in Buffalo was a harbinger of things to come. Something that wasn’t really close to being solved. He was 100% right.

Thinking about it, we got a preview of the 2011 defense being completely unable to stop anything in a crucial contest in Jacksonville last year. Another game that probably vaults the Raids into the playoffs if the D can come up with a single stop.

Toughest Raider loss of all time ? Man, there have been so many it’s hard to choose. But for me (I’m a dinosaur), the one that still bothers me the most and sticks in my craw to this day was the Ice Bowl in the AFC championship game in Pittsburgh that ended with the Raids on the short end of a 16-10 final.

Had a good feature on that game yesterday on the NFL Network.

Couldn’t help but think that although the athletes back then weren’t as big or as fast as the cats today – the game was MUCH better. Better brand of football with some vicious hitting going down.

Watching Atkinson absolutely LAY OUT Lynn Swann with a legal head hunting shot to the noggin during that game was something to see. Part of the game back then. Different era, and a better one as far as I’m concerned. And not just bcz the Raids were a dominant team.

  74. RaiderDuck Says:

  76. RAIDERMAN99 Says:

One additional comment about the unbelievable Raider defensive COLLAPSES of 2011…

We’re lucky there weren’t TWO more.

If Orton doesn’t drop the ball that Houston pounced on…

And if there isn’t a miraculous drop by the Texans and somehow surviving 10 men on the field on Schaub’s game ending pick…

We could EASILY be talking about 5 defensive collapses of unbelievable proportions.

Heck, even a Viking offense with a rookie QB and minus AP made things hairy.

How about Cleveland almost coming back from the dead after Hue’s brain fart ? Cribbs was a step away from tying that game.

Come to think of it…almost gave away the Bear game too.

Not even going to mention the second Mule game.

NO LEAD IS SAFE. NOT WITH THIS DEFENSE.

It would be nice to be able to use the restroom during the 4th quarter and the Raiders in the lead and have a reasonable expectation when I come back to my seat I don’t have to look at 3 guys with Raider uniforms on staring at each other with their arms up in the air asking what the hell just happened?

Is that asking for too much?

  79. CTConstruction Says:

RaiderMann……I feel you. I’m hoping Big Mike Bush comes back. I know he wants to be a starter but I don’t see any teams (besides Bengals) that will offer that. At this point it probably depends on money and I hope we’ve given a competitive offer.

The biggest question is how are all of these “restructures” going to effect the 2013 salary cap? Did we just push those balloon figures from 2012 into 2013. Hopefully the restructuring created cap savings for next off-season. (Per NFL Network, the new TV contract kicks in next year so the salary cap is expected to increase significantly as well)

In the immediate future, we need to pick up more corners and D-Lineman. People forget we did have a very nice stretch when our D-line was ferocious. If things are going to change on defense it will start up front. In an ideal world we’d also sign:
    CB’s – Tracy Porter & Domonique Foxworth
DL – Aubrayo Franklin -OR- Shaun Rogers

I like the way Reggie is taking care of business. We really needed to get rid of all these defensive players who showed no desire to win and cost us some wins. However, I am still stunned that Reggie has allowed TK to remain giving us a 9 mil cap hit on him. Wonder if there is some plan regarding TK. It was not a good combo with TK and Seymour both trying to stop the run.

  85. horrordude0215 Says:

I broke my phone after the Buffalo game. Threw it at the wall after we let them walk all over us after that halftime lead. That was the most heartbreaking loss since I’ve been alive (only born in ‘93 and didn’t follow the Raiders until ‘04ish), with the Jacksonville 2010 loss a close second. With Detroit it was a lot of the “oh, this again? Cool story bro.” I was even anticipating KC making that field goal at the end of regulation before it was blocked again. I was actually IN Oakland for the San Diego game, and the only thing that made me happy was because I don’t get to go to many games considering I live in Oregon, so I didn’t care too much. These defenses cost us a lot of games, and we have some major work to do coming up.

I love the Raiders more than any other team… hell, I love them more than some of my friends and family. Going through the ups and downs are apart of the game. You’ll have the heartbreaking losses like Buffalo, Denver #2, Detroit, San Diego, etc. But you also have the great moments and wins… Jano’s 63 yard field goal that lead us past the Donkeys in primetime, Seymour blocking the two field goals in Kansas City, seeing Moore have monster games in Buffalo and San Diego, the tear inducing (in my case) interception at the end of the Houston game, etc. That’s what keeps me coming back. Don’t dwell on the negatives… think about the positives. The Raiders will shine again, and we WILL overcome this.

    Just Win Baby.

I thought Blackstock looked ok in preseason. Not so much in the real games.

I heard from someone that Goethel might be a possibility for MLB and they move McClain to ILB.

btw-Thanks for msg. Garry. You should post sometimes. I promise i’ll read ‘em even if no one else does. Glad u could pick up the feed.

Reggie signing Tulloch mlb/ilb, would be a major kudos

  88. JB Says:

Blackstock is not an NFL caliber player. Not even UFL caliber. He came in with Bresnahan from UFL & will go back out with him.

If they end up going 4-3, you could see Goethal at MLB with Curry & Romac as OLB. Curry is bad in coverage but better against the run. I think we should go 3-4 with Curry & Romac as ILB Goethal as a BU-ILB and get two new OLB. Anyway you look at it we need a minimum of 3 new LB’ers (starting & depth).

  89. DJ Johnny Says:

Burfict is showing less personal and professional initiative than Jamarcus.

Someone needs to talk to that guy before it’s too late.

He’s already peed away the combine and his pro day and his stock is falling faster than Michael Bush on a 3rd and one.

  100. Hardline Says:

Bartell and Spencer are excellent hardworking CB’s who have been in the NFL for 7 and 8 seasons repectively, although Spencer only played 2 games in 2008 due to injujry. Bartell missed most of last season with broken vertebra in the neck. Spencer developed exclusively in the 49′er defensive system which is always a plus.

Suprising both CB’s have played to the level of Nnamdi, and have similiar stats as Nnamdi in all categories, and come without the adoration and undeserved label of “shut down corner”, which Nnamdi will never be. (If you think Nnamdi is a shut down corner compare his stats to Lester Hayes and Rod Woodsen; they were actual shut down corners for which Nnamdi cannot, and never will, compare.)

It is almost certain that Bartell and Spencer will restore our secondary to respectability so that top flight QB’s don’t torch us on every pass play.

Thank Reggie and Allen for clearing out the crappola known as our secondary: Routt, CJ, and the rest of the worthless dogs.

    $$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$

I am amazed at all the talk that we bring Gallery back. He was another of AD’s worthless #1 draft picks, costing millions and millions, while never performing to expectations. Gallery was injury prone during his last 3 years with the Raiders, and was injured a substantial portion last year with Seattle.

I am not sure why anyone would want to bring him back; he’s completely done…..stick a fork in him.

  102. Master Beeecham Says:

After a D.O.A.L, (duece of a lifetime) I usually have which every stripper is the most wasted clean out my crack with lufa soaked in Cactus Cooler

  103. CTConstruction Says:

Definitely like the Bartell signing but Shawntae Spencer is a career under-achiever. He never lived up to his potential in San Fran. And the fact Harbaugh didn’t trust him is VERY concerning.

Be careful with stats…those same statistics had everyone in this chat room saying Standford Routt was just as good as Nnamdi last year. “He led the league in complete percentage” or some garbage like that.

Letting Routt out of the door isn’t a loss at all.

  104. RaiderDuck Says:

The biggest problem I’d have with Gallery returning is, as several others have mentioned, his injury history.

Signing Gallery means you also need to sign a starting-quality LG to go in his place when he inevitably misses multiple games.

So why not just cut out the middleman and sign the other guy to start?

  105. Hardline Says:

Gallery is a physical wreck and never played beyond mediocre in his younger days while in good health.

Now he is over-the-hill, and should retire. My question: why would we want to bring him back? It doesn’t make much sense.

  106. CTConstruction Says:

Yeah i feel you about Gallery. Just saying if he comes on the super cheap, pick him up

  107. Hardline Says:

    CTConstruction, 103

All I remember about Routt, is him getting torched, pass, after pass, after pass, or gaining interference penalties which put the opponent within a few yards of the goal line. A smart QB just needed to throw a long pass on Routt, to gain a completion of whopping interence penalty…..every time.

  108. RaiderDuck Says:

What about Daniel Loper? Looks like the Cowboys let him go, and he did alright in the ZBS. Maybe worth a look?

I guess I am starting to sound like a broken record. Why would you displace one of the better left guards in the league to play center (when he does not play center that well) to replace him with someone washed up? It does not make any sense. Bring in a center instead.

What do you mean “doesn’t play center that well?” He had what, one game at C last year? Maybe two? Give him a full training camp at Center, and he’ll be fine.

If you’ve got an 8-8 team, might as well have a 8-8 payroll,

  125. Corporate_Raider Says:

Reggie is doing the best he can with the hand dealt him. He’s having to cut people not because they aren’t good players or because he doesn’t want to keep them. He’s cutting them because their pay scale is out of whack and to cut them is the prudent move. Its about doing what you have to in the short term to get to the point where you can start making moves for the long term. Some guys just have to go, other you have to let them go, understand? He is also signing the best guys he can given the circumstance. I don’t know if any of you guys posting ever played any sports but sometimes all guys need is a chance to actually play and they blossom. Some guys play better in the game than they do in practice. I think Reggie is doing the best he can given the options at hand and hoping for the best. Some moves will work, others will fail miserably. We have to wait and see.
