Free agent center Satele arrested

By Jerry McDonald - NFL Writer
Sunday, March 18th, 2012 at 9:50 am in Oakland Raiders.

There has been little buzz about the possibility of the Raiders re-signing unrestricted free agent center Samson Satele, even though he’s started 42 games in three years since being acquired from the Miami Dolphins.

In light of an disorderly conduct arrest in his native Hawaii Saturday as reported in the Honolulu Advertiser, there might be even less now.

It seemed as if Satele might be out the door last year when he was an unrestricted free agent and the Raiders drafted Stefen Wisniewski, with Hue Jackson procliaming him the starting center.

Instead, Satele signed another one-year deal with the Raiders and Wisniewski instead started all season at left guard.

When Satele arrived in Oakland, the Raiders were strictly a zone blocking team under coach Tom Cable. He was slow to adapt to the system, but eventually became the starter and has been lauded for his toughness and ability to play through injury. In Satele’s first season with Oakland, Chris Morris, smaller, quicker and an experienced zone blocker, was the starter for the first four games.

The Raiders will return to a heavy emphasis on zone blocking this season under offensive coordinator Greg Knapp and line coach Frank Pollack, who were both with the Houston Texans last season. The Raiders have already imported one Houston player in Mike Brisiel, who will replace Cooper Carlisle at right guard.

It remains to be seen whether Wisniewski will remain at left guard or move to center.

Satele was arrested at 4 a.m. in an area popular having many late-night restaurants and bars, according to the Advertiser story.

Based on them constantly getting pushed back in pass protection.

How many runs up the gut between Satele and Carlisle do you recall?

I’m sure you read JFB post about Sateles lack of timing on screens.

Plenty of on the field issues to point to with those 2.

  5. YoungAmerican Says:

The entire right side of the line was a problem, as far as I’m concerned.

As much as the defense was far and away the biggest weakness for the Raiders, I wouldn’t complain if the Raiders made a couple more signings along the offensive line. Anthony Collins could be a great sleeper pickup for RT.

Nice work Jerry. Now maybe some more relevant news if you do not mind. BFD really!

  9. jesusraiderjim Says:

Just my opinion but aside from Mannings supposed unwillingness to want to play in the NFC because of his brother, the 49ers are looking like a “real” contender for a trip to the super bowl.

They just signed Manningham, have the entire D coming back, and he could be (barring injury) the missing piece that they need. If he goes to Dungver on the other hand, that would be fine with me. If you are scared as a fan to want to play him, that is weak!

  10. 8RaiderReign8 Says:

He’s going to be a lot cheaper now!

  11. Raider O Says:

I thought Satele and Savage played well especially in run blocking situations, and didn’t do as well in pass protection.
Barnes IMO was below avg at run blocking and pass protection.

  12. Raider O Says:

    Jim,

I don’t think the rumor that Manning doesn’t want to play for the NFC is true. Why would he workout for the Whiners, if he is not interested?

  13. Raider O Says:

I like A Collins, but he didn’t start a lot of games for Cinci. He is young (26), so I would give him a chance if the price is right. I think he can play G too.

  14. J Hill Says:

Agreed with YA that for one reason or the other, the entire right side of the Oline could use an upgrade.

Wiz = clear upgrade at C
    Brisiel = upgrade at RG

Just saying that I’m not so sure Barksdale or Campbell are actual upgrades to Barnes. They might be. If there is no other options, bring back Barnes to compete with those 2. If what you say is true, he will get beat out in camp and either end up as a backup or cut.

  15. jesusraiderjim Says:

    O

After the niners snuck into the race without the media even knowing I believe very lttle that the media has to offer.

All the speculation is simply that speculation. You semi-pros in here are as informed if not more so than most of the media clowns. Schefter does have his finger on the pulse but that is about it.

  17. Raider O Says:

No one is sure Barksdale & Campbell are upgrades since they didn’t play that many snaps, but I’m sure they can’t do much worse than Barnes. I don’t mind bringing Barnes to compete, but I rather add a new OT like A Collins, or even D Bell from the Bills.

I’m not yet. Wanna see more of who we pick up. Plus see at least initial signs of Knapp working with the plethora of offensive weapons. People say Knapp sucked because he didn’t have weapons. Now he does for sure have explosive pieces to the offense.

I mean even with only a very middle-class LB added and some bottom-feeder depth I still think the defense will improve. The question is, will the offense.

  24. Marks hair Says:

What suprise… Manning worksout with the NInnys …and the story was supposed to be a leak ?… It was a ploy to drive up Mannings asking price…. Went from 60 mill to 90+ in just a few hours …me?.. I don’t care where he goes…. If our Team is the team we need it to be its not supposed to matter ….I care about Raider business…fear No one..that’s the Raider team we want …if Manning goes to the Donkeys then we need to beat them twice a year…..that’s all it means… Fk’m all …

Not sure how Barks would look in ZBS. Will have to be a “try and see” type of thing.

Like trying to put the wrong CB in our Man-Coverage scheme in free agency has proven – good players don’t always look good in the wrong system.

  27. Raider O Says:

    Jim,

I don’t think he will go to Denver. I think it will be Tenn or SF. I understand that the AFC west is a weak division, but so is the NFC west and SF has a better team than Denver. Also, Tenn has a great OL that allowed less than 25 sacks last season, and I think that will be a huge factor too. Denver has nothing to offer other than a weak division and overachieving defense.

  28. Marks hair Says:

    25. Alot of players coaches and fans have been chanting “beat peyton” for yrs.. But its not as easy as not being scared.. Nobodys scared. Some players are just better than others.. Id rather beat him once in the playoffs than face him twice next yr..

  29. Raider O Says:

Why do you think Alex Parsons can play C?

  30. jesusraiderjim Says:

Remember when the AFC and NFC West were dominant conferences? Like to see that again

As far as wins go I think it is too early to guess yet. We will have our work cut out to win the division.

  31. Marks hair Says:

    26. Yeah, thats why I wanted winston.

  32. fingers Says:

18…depends on what Allen and Reggie do with our defense….a little early for this Raider fan to predict wins….. I do think our offense will be much improved … Potentials there ..

  33. jesusraiderjim Says:

I mentioned him a couple days ago. Great option for the #2 QB spot.

  36. Dirty Hippie Says:

    @ 30,

When has the NFC WEST EVER been a dominate division?

    Answer = NEVER

  37. fingers Says:

33…I got the 90 mill for Manning offer from Sirius NFL radio and Broncos bleacher reports running the story …. Never know what’s real until he actually signs…

  38. jesusraiderjim Says:

Ok Mark I will bite. I thought I read that Billy Boy had not started a game since 2005. That being said we definetly need a good back-up anf TP does need a mentor. I would rather have a Henne or possibly V Young but we have to wait and see I guess. Wondering where A Smith is gonig to end up?

  39. YoungAmerican Says:

Henne went to Jacksonville, Hill is staying in Detroit. VY is not backup QB material – too unstable. Volek is the Raiders’ best option, and will not break the bank.

  40. fingers Says:

    I know… Bleacher Reports usually fulla Schidt…

  41. fingers Says:

I remember when a lot of people were really high on Volek… Even as a potential started….I’d be ok with him as a back up…plus.. Could help TP ..

  42. joker94583 Says:

Disorderly conduct isn’t exactly running over and killing someone while drunk or high. I doubt any team will be overly concerned. He’s only 27, he’ll land somewhere. Raiders should offer him a deal now on the cheap.

  43. J Hill Says:

Seems to me like Pryor is the #2 guy.

The lack of urgency to fill that position say a lot, imo.

  44. J Hill Says:

    Isn’t Parsons a C?

  45. jesusraiderjim Says:

    J Hill

You bring up a good point about TP although we have not really done much of anything. Not complaining I like and trust what Reg is doing. I think TP is too raw as of yet for the #2 job. Would like someone with at least some games under their belt.

  46. fingers Says:

Jhill .. That’s interesting … About TP maybe being #2…..would mean they think he’s made progress and has potential sooner than we’d thought..

  47. J Hill Says:

Been on the practice squad a couple of season, right?

Would solve a lot of problems if Parsons and Barksdale can claim starting slots.

  48. jesusraiderjim Says:

I wonder if TP is working out with Palmer and some of the recievers?

  49. fingers Says:

I’d read somewhere that Pryor was following Palmer around like a puppy trying to pickup all he could… Hope that’s the case…

  50. J Hill Says:

    I don’t know fellas.

Just think if Pryor was the non QB prospect we’ve heard about, then there would have been a push to get a quality #2.

    Is Kitna still out there?

  51. jesusraiderjim Says:

The front office has played things so close to the vest we really have no way of knowing what they are thinking as far as TP goes.

  52. J Hill Says:

A guy like Lienart is someone who would be signed to compete for the #2 job. He’s not someone that is good enough to be penciled in as the #2, imo.

A signing like that would indicate Pryor certainly is in the conversation for the #2.

  53. jesusraiderjim Says:

If Palmer goes down would you be confident that someone like Leinart or TP could do the job? How about McNabb? Kitna would be ok.

  54. J Hill Says:

I wouldn’t expect a backup QB to come in a play like a #1 QB.

Then again, a guy like Orton, Campbell, or Henne are former starters who have had some success in the league. I’d put them a notch above guys like Volek and Leinart.

I’m hoping Pryor can throw the ball. If he can, we are set at QB for years.

The line had its best performances with Heyer at OG and Wisniewski at C. Not sure how Wisniewski specifically graded out in those situations, but the line as a whole flourished with him at C.
    =====================================

No they didn’t. Where some of you guys get this info is amazing to me. Look, if Wisnewski at C and Heyer at Guard were the answers, they would have been in there. Go put in the tape of the Minnesota game, the game where Satele goes out right out the end of the lst half, and you will see Wiz and Heyer get completely manhandled in the 2nd half like rag dolls. That’s why Satele was in there the rest of the season, even tho he was limping around pretty good.

  57. luvmarvhub Says:

I don’t think there’s any way a player who has not played one down at quarterback (and, if I recall, has played only one down of NFL football, period), is your #2 qb.

  58. raiderzmaverick Says:

I agree. I think we did better with Satelle in center then when Wiz had to go there and we had to put Heyer in at Guard where he looked horrible last year.

On back-up QB, I think that Kitna is now over-the-hill as far as being able to really back up. Probably is retired now.

  59. jesusraiderjim Says:

Well if TP does end up being our guy the sooner we saddle em up and ride em the better. If he is doing all the right things and soaking up knowledge The Reg & co will know it.

Terrell Pryor is not the number two Q for the 2012 season. Pryor has not shown ANYTHING that he can go out there and play at this level. Expect Leinert to show up here not that he has shown much of anything either. We will get a good look at Pryor in the preseason. Hopefully he has spent the last 7 months working on his mechanics.

  62. Seymour Bush Says:

The best possible thing for Terrell Pryor is to sit back for a couple of years, and work on his game and learn from Palmer. Palmer is very forthcoming with info and a very good role model.

  63. raiderzmaverick Says:

Knapp was known for his inch-by-inch consistent offense. Ours was most effective when it was an explosive-as-helll offense. Our weapons (when we were using our FB, WRs etc.) really stretched the field.

Maybe if we ended up having Palmer going down it might be good to have a 2-way threat in there like TP. Then it would be a run-first, run-second and have the option of running when he’s throwing (kind of like what he did with Vick the first couple years in Atlanta). It wasn’t explosive in passing, but it probably plays to the strengths of a new or mediocre QB.

  64. J Hill Says:

Don’t have the Minny game on the DVR.

I CLEARLY recall Wiz making a noticeable impact at C when Satele got injured. I think it was Barksdale in their at LG looking outta place.

Minnesota has one of the strongest defensive lines in the league. They’re going to lose a few battles here and there. But the offense stayed on schedule for the most part, and the line play was pivotal in closing out the game after the Vikings started to rally.

With Wisniewski at C and Heyer at LG, the Raiders dominated the LOS against another pretty good defense in the first Chargers game.

  72. J Hill Says:

Hate to break it to you, but if we lose our starting QB next year for any reason, chances are pretty slim of us making any noise with a backup QB.

Exception to that would be a guy like Pryor. IF he can actually throw the ball.

But guys like Lienart, Volek, or any other QB out there right now aren’t taking us anywhere.

  73. raiderzmaverick Says:

I think it was the LG (whoever it was) that wasn’t playing as well as Wiz was at LG. So they put back Satelle even though injured because that combination played better having the “best 5″ out there.

  75. backstageatapuppetshow Says:

How many wins…it all depends on a number of factors….

-Does McFadden play more or less than 8 games
-Does the Defense show some adaptability this year
-How does Coach Allen lead this team?
-Does Coach Knapp incorporate some new ideas inside the passing game?
-Do we finally move Reece to TE?

    & unfortunately

-Where does Manning land? In Denver perhaps?

Too many questions to know anything just yet….

For the record…how many wins is the WRONG question….

The question should ALWAYS be will we have an opportunity to compete for the Super Bowl?

Actually — It sounds like excuse-making to me. It’s the middle of the off-season…if he can’t work it now, when can he? I’m not saying he’s not all-that as a player, but why add more question marks than necessary with a young Player? “Maybe” 19 reps when healthy isn’t exactly tearing it up.

A guy could have great football instincts…but if he’s slow, weak, or injury-prone (worse yet, any combination thereof), he’s not anyone we need to spend a precious pick on. It’s not about the money risked in these cases…it’s about the roster spot taken.

UDRFA RG Alex Parsons – USC Signs With The Oakland Raiders
by Raymond St. Martin (Saint) on Apr 24, 2010 6:22 PM PDT

    13 COMMENTS EMAIL PRINT
The Oakland Raiders surprised many in the Raider Nation by not drafting a Guard in the draft. While they continued to take DBs they did not take a guard.

I just found out that Alex Parsons – RG – USC has signed with the Oakland Raiders.

Parsons can play any position on the Offensive Line and many in Oakland are hoping that he can push Cooper Carlisle right away.

He also has experience on Special Teams, which will work in his favor. At 6-4 309, he projects as a good fit for Tom Cable’s zone blocking scheme. He is probably also a favorite of Al’s as he runs a consistent 4.93 40. He was projected to go in the 7th round in this deep draft and I am happy that he is aboard.

    From CBS:

04/02/2010 – PRO DAY RESULTS: USC had no shortage of elite prospects at its pro day on Wednesday outdoors on FieldTurf. All 32 teams had representatives in attendance, including Panthers coach John Fox and mutliple offensive and defensive coordinators. G Alex Parsons (6-3 1/2, 305) had a 4.93-average 40, a 26 1/2-inch vertical, an 8-10 broad jump, a 4.55 short shuttle, a 7.67 three-cone drill and 25 bench press reps. – Gil Brandt, NFL.com

This UDRFA signing period has been amazing so far and it continues to get better.

You subscribe to the Great Men theory of history, which elevates flawed human beings into living deities. Most great leaders benefit to one degree or another from luck and timing, and Al certainly took advantage of both–embellished by his own brand of ruthlessness, which I don’t necessarily begrudge him given what he accomplished from 1963 to around 1985. To me, it was probably justified and put a modest industrial city on the map and, what’s more, created the merged NFL as we know it today.

But your view of history tends to obscure/paper over/forgive flaws, even the most egregious ones that many great leaders ultimately succumb to.

    —————————

Wrong again, Ohio Player — I don’t obscure or forgive Al’s flaws. I never considered Al a deity…just a super-bright mind, who put himself in position to have a major impact in all of our lives. Like it or not, as fans, he was something special in our lives, even if he was “just” a man.

I never simply agreed with Al’s choices; I have my own mind on personnel issues…and also on PR issues, many of which I would’ve handled differently.

But, it never mattered that much to me that Al’s way didn’t always work-out…because I knew he was always trying the best way he knew how. I rode all the Raiders’ glories, and survived all their downfalls along the way. And, I “blame” Al for all of it, ultimately.

Flawed he was, but I never once wavered in my belief that Al had the right to do what he did with HIS own Team…mainly because I believe I would’ve done much the same thing if I owned a Team (although, I’d have GM help — I like to party on yachts too much).

Al was flawed…and his enemies will tell you that. So will his friends. Somehow, I managed to stay a fan of his, and of the Raiders through it all.

Al’s Organization was never ruined, although it was in disarray at times. Most of his Players will be on the next winning Raiders team…that magic mixture is a hard one to find sometimes. Especially if you blow it with big $$ contracts too many times, as Al did late.

Nobody made any of us in here STAY a fan. Once we become adults, we can decide which Teams to follow/spend money on. Nobody makes someone else spend money on merchandise, just so they can complain more about their Team or Owner. I find it funny (sad) how some people will come on here just to point out Al’s faults…and never any good stuff. And the guy isn’t even around anymore.

A tough salary cap year, and then the Raiders’ books can compare to most any other team’s…the sky has not fallen, and will not fall, because of Al’s contracts. It never would have.

Maybe it wasn’t the transition we all would have liked to see…but thanks to Al, the Team is in solid hands with a GM who will (hopefully) have great success along the way, just like Al. He’ll also make some bad mistakes, just like Al. And I’ll be with him all the way, just like Al. Flaws and all.

    Just Loyalty, Baby.

    ++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
The Niners are about to have that warm, wet and uncomfortable feelings akin to dropping a load in one’s pants when Alex Smith signs with Miami and PM signs with Denver.

So close and yet so very far!

Careful where you sit Niners fan! I can just hear the “squishiness” now.

Hard to imagine Smith making decision with Mi prior to Mannings decision tomorrow. Smith loves playing for Harb and niners. Took less money to stay with niners in recent past.
If niners lose both qb’s, they’re back in the pack.
If niners keep smith, they are huge contenders.
If niners get manning? No team matches up to them.

Vernon Davis, Crabtree, Randy Moss, and now Monningham to throw to? All starters on the #1 defense returning? Top special team returning intact, and actually stronger? Gore in backfield?

Thats simply not true. If we saved 6 million this year (or whatever the figure is) and cut him after next year, we lose not only the salary due, but the entire 6 mill of cap space, minus one year (depending on how many years they extended it out).

Not sure how the $11M “signing” bonus affects the cap there in 2012, if it’s guaranteed.

2013: $5M of the $13M already paid, so another $2.5M guaranteed against the cap, which includes $900K (vet minimum + bonuses ($5.5m) not guaranteed from PFT article).

2014: $15M on the table as base salary ($900k vet minimum + bonuses ($14m) not guaranteed from PFT)

Porter may choose between the #Raiders and returning to the #Saints. He visited with the Bengals (as did Aaron Ross) but Cin. signed former Texans CB Jason Allen today instead. Porter is 25 but has had injuries to his knee (twice) and to his wrist and calf. He played for new Raiders coach Dennis Allen when Allen was his DB coach in NO

  204. guest123 Says:

One more thing on Porter: there were reports that Ross’ and Jason Allen’s visits with Bengals went well, but no such word on Porter’s. He recently told N.O. Times-Picayune that he is “100 percent healthy” … but then again what else is he going to say? The Raiders last week were not afraid of players with checkered injury histories

  205. GG Says:

We saved 9 million from this years cap by transferring it to future earnings. If we dump him after next season, the cap savings gets accelerated, thus if it was a four year extension, 6.75 million gets tacked on to next years cap.

He is staying a MINIMUM of two years, prolly three.

Al focked up. Yeah…so?? Just because I was a fan of The Man, it doesn’t mean I can’t recognize when he stumbled. If you weren’t a fan of something he did, you’d have left a long time ago. Just because he’s gone, it doesn’t mean I won’t be just as loyal to the Raiders, and their management, as I ever was.

It’s not just loyalty to Al, it’s loyalty to the Team…even when they/it/the GM/the Owner fock up. Not blind. Just loyal. The kind of guy you want on your side when SHTF.

Pittsburgh, Baltimore, Green Bay, Indianapolis, etc., all created new models for success that far eclipsed Al’s hubristic one man does it all style that has proven to be nearly catastrophic to the team’s fortunes. You can prop him up all you want, but in the end Al committed the most cowardly of sins: he didn’t know when to exit stage left.

So, “the most cowardly of sins” if not knowing when to quit?

How the hell is that being a “coward”?

You can say many things about Al; and you have, but “coward”?

Stubborn, made alot of poor decisions…ok, but not “coward”.

I can’t see a time when we can ever say we have an “easy” schedule.

Every schedule is tough in the NFL, although they seem to finangle it to where even the “easy” teams are a tuff match for Raiders.

I just picture the schedule makers conspiring- “Ok. We have Oakland having to play a 5-11 Denver team, and a poor Buffalo team but how can we make it as tuff as possible? I got it. Let’s have ‘em play AT Denver on opening night. Denver is always tuff at home and especially on MNF. Then…let’s make ‘em travel to the east coast to play Buffalo for an early game on a short week. Haha. We have to give ‘em some home games so let’s follow those up with the team that was in the AFC Championship game in the Jets and then give ‘em New England. That’ll take away that home field advantage, ha. Shoot, they’ll be 1-3 at best and out of it by week 5. Hahahahaha.”

“We haven’t had a guy like that, not since I’ve been here. He’s been like a monster in there.”

At least one AFC personnel director believes Brodrick Bunkley is the best 4-3 nose tackle available in free agency.
The 4-3 nose position is different from the 3-4 nose. 4-3 NTs are ordinarily lighter and expected to rush the passer more. “He’s got some talent,” the AFC exec said of Bunkley. “He can get up the field and be that penetrator.” Other potential 4-3 nose tackles on the market include Pat Sims (Bengals), Luis Castillo (Chargers), Trevor Laws (Eagles), and Cory Redding (Ravens). Less than two weeks ago, there was optimism in Minnesota that free agent linebacker Erin Henderson would get a deal done with the Vikings before the start of free agency. But now that we’re four days into free agency and no deal is close, Henderson is getting upset.
Henderson vented on Twitter about what he perceives as a lack of respect from the Vikings, as shown by the lack of an offer that he thinks is acceptable. And when a fan told Henderson he’s not worth a big-money deal, Henderson went off.
“I’ve watched every single 1 of my games from last [year] 10 [times] over. I know what I’m worth,” Henderson wrote, via 1500ESPN.com. “Not to mention they [have not] even give me an offer. I don’t come to [your] job and tell [you] what you [should and shouldn't] make. So how can [you] say what I’m worth?”
Henderson said he’s surprised the Vikings haven’t agreed to pay what he thinks he’s worth.
“Whats crazy is I’m not even asking for big money,” Henderson wrote. “All I want is respectable money for what I’m asked to do.”
And Henderson even suggested that he’d quit football entirely before he’d play for less than he thinks he’s worth.

New Orleans Saints free agent cornerback Tracy Porter is expected to visit the Oakland Raiders “in the next couple of days,” according to the San Francisco Chronicle’s Vittorio Tafur. Porter previously visited the Cincinnati Bengals.

The market has been slow for Porter so far, which is kind of surprising. Although his production dipped over the last two years and he has had a history of minor injuries, Porter is still just 25 years old. And he has played in some big-time games, including his heroics in the Super Bowl and NFC championship game two years ago. Porter has always been a confident cover man, and he rarely gets “burned” in coverage. His inconsistency has been more about missed tackles and a lack of interceptions.

Porter said before free agency started that the Saints had expressed interest in keeping him but hadn’t offered a contract. Perhaps he’ll wind up staying in New Orleans if he doesn’t find a bigger deal on the open market.

I hope we can get down to the bottom of why the Bengals had little or no interest in Tracy Porter. Like others are saying, we need to kick the tires and see if he’s still in good shape. All I know from what little I’ve seen of Porter is that he’s a playmaker, and even though he’s inconsistent, that could be improved with coaching. He’s just 25, ran a 4.37 40. He can play either corner or safety and lets us have some versatility with how we position Huff. I think in Oakland, Porter will thrive.

D’Qwell Jackson literally killed the LB market with his 5yr/$42M contract, which is insane (more than Patrick Willis who makes less than $8M/year). I like Q, but he’s no Patrick Willis. Lofton is running an ego trip thinking he should be paid as much as these guys or more. There’s good money to be had for Lofton, but he needs to realize that he’s more in the $6-$7M price range.

He has above-average quickness … He is not a natural knee bender and has to work to keep his pad level down to leverage blocks, but will keep his feet alive and active to sustain and finish blocks off. He plays with good strength and power but relies more on his upper-body strength than hip explosion and leg power.”

Love this signing. Calculated gamble. This guy can cover, play the ball (knock it down, not good catching INT) and hit hard enough to cause some fumbles…if he’s up to it after that neck injury.

I’d take Bush back if he offered a hometown discount. Otherwise he can go make a couple of extra bucks backing up Cedric Benson, Matt Forte, or Marshawn Lynch. Give him a nice 4 year/$12M deal to stay as DMC’s backup. That might not even be a discount the way the RB market is nowadays. It’s like collusion against all RB’s. They are a dime a dozen, drafted in the late rounds and recycled, rinse/repeat. It sucks to be RB if you aren’t elite.

Well, we can hope for better coaching (I certainly believe we will have better coaching on the defensive side of the ball) and that the new players will be more skilled in football knowledge and less apt to make stupid mistakes and be out of position.

We have not lost that much as of yet. Cooper and Satele, Chaz and Boss, Wimbley and Routt? Wimbley may be a loss, but we still have cap room to find a guy who can be a more consistant help on D.

He was signed by Cable when we ran a ZBS and he can do the job if he wants to.

He had 19 carries and four receptions in 2010, but spent 2011 bouncing between the Texans and Lions practice squads.

The Raiders are in need of running back help as they try to figure out the post-Michael Bush era. Darren McFadden will remain their starting running back, but given his injury history, depth is needed. The Raiders are hoping for big things from Taiwan Jones as a complement to McFadden, but he is only a second year back. At this point it would help to bring in some competition, even if Davis has not been the most dynamic of running backs.

The 49ers running back situation is focused on Frank Gore and Kendall Hunter, but they are on the lookout for competition for third string back Anthony Dixon. Although Dixon brings great energy to special teams, he has a bad habit of being a bit too much of a dancer for a big guy. This possibility was first floated by the Charlotte Observer, and Yasinskas is a trusted voice as a former Panthers beat reporter. Stewart is entering a contract year, and the Panthers probably won’t be able to retain both him and the overpaid Williams behind 2012. Signing Manning was the Broncos’ only foolproof way to crush Tebowmania, and there’s an almost zero percent chance he will be allowed to remain on the roster and serve as a distraction behind the biggest free agent signing in NFL history. The Jaguars and Dolphins figure to be Tebow’s most frequently rumored landing spots, though it’s quite possible he won’t be shipped anywhere as a starter. Coach John Fox and VP of Football Operations John Elway will soon be free of a player they could barely hide their contempt for.

Just to be clear – I was not rooting for an injury. Someone else posted that they wanted someone to break his neck. That is why I said I don’t want to hope for injury. I was saying we need a pass rush to put pressure on him and force some mistakes. Not to injure him. 513. 1960AutumnWind Says:

Manning makes lemonade out of lemons if he has time. He is extremely accurate and tries to find creases to throw into and is like a coach on the field. He makes average WRs look like all pros. Extremely good at timing routes. Look at the drop off in Indy when he left! Don’t under estimate him. However, he does make mistakes if you get him moving in the pocket. We need to beef up our pass rush for both him and Rivers.

  537. luvmarvhub Says:

The one think about Peyton going to Denver that bothers me the most is that yes, I DO think the refs and the NFL will want him to succeed. He’s the biggest story they have to push of the 2012 season. Subconsciously, that affects the refs. Denver will be given every close call, and even though I believed that the old think of refs throwing flags on the Raiders might abate now that we are under new management, we will not be seen as the “new and improved Raiders who aren’t dumb,” but as “the villains who are trying to keep Peyton from his rightful destiny of achieving a second Super Bowl victory.

And no, I don’t think I am being conspiratorial because I don’t think the refs operate that way. All this stuff operates on a subconscious level. We all know that Stanford Routt will not get the same number of flags thrown on him for face guarding as he did with the Raiders.

I think Manning’s neck is fine or else no doctor would have cleared him.

His biggest physical problem is his age and one year of inactivity. That doesn’t mean he won’t be a great quarterback, but it does mean that everything he does, even throw, will be just a split second slower than the year before.

Also, while he was never adept of foot, his awkwardness belied his ability at times to head for the sidelines when necessary. When you are his age, he will be slower on any number of plays. He also ran qb sneaks on short yardage. They may not want him sticking his head into the pile anymore on 3rd and 4th and short.

No, but I just read that he turned down an offer from SD that was 1mil/year more than what Carolina offered. He really wanted to rejoin Ron Rivera, play with Newton and get back to the east coast.

I think Reggie takes a RB in the late rounds or finds an undrafted RB.

  599. DMAC Says:

The Denver Post’s Mike Klis expects the Broncos to sign free agent Dallas Clark.
It’s unclear if Klis is just speculating or passing along sourced information, but the move would be a no-brainer after the Broncos landed Peyton Manning on Monday and allowed their 2011 starting tight end Daniel Fells to sign with the Patriots. Clark would have to be a part of a tandem, however, as injuries have limited him to just 17 of a possible 32 games the past two seasons.

  607. luvmarvhub Says:

Let’s stop whining about Peyton. In the glory years of the Raiders, we faced top-notch talent in the AFC West. It was often the strongest division in the NFL. If you have good management and a good coaching staff, it makes your team better to face the best. I truly believe that. Our defense will be facing a qb that calls plays at the line and that will act as a honing instrument for them, making them stronger when they face other teams. I am of the belief that when you don’t face the best, that’s when you get lazy.

In addition, the Raiders are trying to get a stadium deal worked out too. Facing Denver with Manning assures one more game of a sell-out and we need all the sell-outs and season ticket sales we can get.

The Raiders are a project under first year management. They have offensive tools that hopefully are used properly to hide first year defensive weaknesses, but I am counting on Reggie and Allen to show us that the defense is better than last year’s because that defense had two problems, stupidity and lack of heart.

Manning will not have a very strong team around him. The running game was really good one Tebow came in because of the option play. If you recall many of the long runs by RBs were of draws and QB options. The D was focused on outside containment, while the middle was wide open. We also got there D coordinator, so how good will the D be in 2012. Payton will not get the broncos the playoff in the first year and won’t get them to SB at all.

I don’t understand references to Denver’s defense as “poor.”

Their defense is what kept them in games all year, with the exception of a bad start. They grew stronger and stronger, and that is what John Fox is known for. Never underestimate what he can do with even mediocre talent, much less a superstar like Vonn Miller.

    **************************
Their defense was average statistically and inconsistent. In some games like the Miami game they played really well. The reason DA is so well thought of is they were historically bad the year before with some significant but not earth shattering changes in personal.

Irvin reportedly destroyed a sign at a Jimmy John’s restaurant in Morgantown. The former junior college transfer already had a troubled past by being ruled academically ineligible out of high school followed by a stint in juvenile jail. Irvin is a pass rush specialist with elite athleticism, but shies away from contact on the edge. This news may solidify Irvin as a third-day pick.

There were many years in Indy he didn’t have a strong team around him. The key is his line and his receivers…and timing, which means practice.

When the running game was lost, he still made playoffs. Furthermore, as far as Raiders and Raider fans are concerned, he doesn’t have to go to win the Super Bowl or even get there in order for him to be a success in our eyes. All he has to do is win the AFC West.

That being said, I am glad he signed with the Broncos. I believe it spurs our franchise to get better, and we’ve beaten him before. I agree with others that KC will be good and one never knows about the Chargers.

We actually now have suddenly a really strong AFC West again. Any team literally could win. SD has a good team, but we’re all sure they will somehow manage to choke.
