Raiders confirm Spencer, Carlisle returns

By Jerry McDonald - NFL Writer
Monday, March 19th, 2012 at 4:39 pm in Oakland Raiders.

The Raiders confirmed the addition of cornerback Shawntae Spencer and also announced they had re-signed guard Cooper Carlsile.

Carlisle has been one of Oakland’s most durable players over the last five seasons and last year did not miss a single snap. He was cut last week when the Raiders were dealing with salary cap issues, but told his agent, Frank Murtha, they wanted to bring him back.

In the meantime, the Raiders signed Mike Brisiel of the Houston Texans _ also a right guard.

Carlisle has been exclusively a right guard in his NFL career. If Carlisle or Brisiel are being considered for a switch to left guard, it’s conceivable Stefen Wisniewski could move to center. If not, Oakland has depth at a position that previously had none, other than third-year lineman Bruce Campbell.

Good to see Carlisle back. One of those nameless, faceless guys who just does his job. I’m half surprised he didn’t sign with Raiders East. I.E. New England.

    ***BREAKING NEWS***

    >>>Raiders waived FB James McCluskey.
McCluskey spent all of the 2011 season on injured reserve after being signed as an undrafted rookie out of Boston College. His NFL prospects are bleak.

    Who?

  11. The Oracle Says:

Elway just paid a ton of money to have Manning mentor Tebow. It’s that simple. He knows Manning would need oxygen and a uniform made out of vaetrex to play in that high altitude cold weather. Elways not stupid. Manning will be Tebows mentor. Its that simple.
    ==================================

Actually it is not that simple. Manning has never been a mentor to anyone. And if you think I am kidding, just ask Jim Sorgi, John Navarre, Cory Sauter or Curtis Painter.

I know I know, just being sarcastic about what I think is a stupid move by all parties. He basically said, I’ll come to Denver on my terms and Elway said, OK. High altitude and cold weather with a questionable injury? Stupid move.

    +++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

The NFL is far from copying the “the college systems Offensively….”

The NFL is utilizing players that, for the most part, do not fit the mold of what an NFL player should be. Witness the “Wildcat” that is fairly non-existent anymore. It was merely a fad and those type of players are finding their way into the NFL less and less.

Learn football before making such ridiculous comments.

  30. raider till i die Says:

Tebow as a punt returner? How ’bout TE? Amy could dig the ticket sales. If Tebow became a Raidah, say as a punt returner, TE, half or full back, or even a #2 or 3 backup, how would we feel about it if he were in silver and black?

Take your time and seriously ponder the idea. It could happen. Reggie aint no dummy, like Elway is.

The NFL has been consistently copying the Offensive concepts inside of college football for the last 10 years….the Wildcat is a version of the single wing…a concept which originated in too many places to possibly trace….

The Wildcat is a concept that hasn’t gone anywhere….in fact…just because the Dolphins don’t use it anymore doesn’t mean teams don’t have it in the playbook…

    It is a play concept…like many…

  54. Seymour Bush Says:

What is being lost in all of this is what excellent signings Spencer and Carlisle are. The lst thing that McKenzie and DA wanted to do was improve the secondary. Huff, Branch, Spencer and Bartells kills Huff, Branch, routt and Chris Johnson. Kills it.

I did watch the end of the Detroit game. After Johnson makes the 50 yard play with McClain on him, Routt gives up ANOTHER PI which was like his 5th of the game, and then the winning score. Routt sucked ass.

Students held rallies on the campus of Florida A&M University in Tallahassee and outside the Seminole County Criminal Justice Center, where prosecutors are reviewing the case to determine if charges should be filed. The students demanded the arrest of 28-year-old George Zimmerman, who authorities say shot 17-year-old Trayvon Martin last month during a confrontation in a gated community in Sanford.

Zimmerman spotted Martin as he was patrolling his neighborhood on a rainy evening last month and called 911 to report a suspicious person. Against the advice of the 911 dispatcher, Zimmerman then followed Martin, who was walking home from a convenience store with a bag of Skittles in his pocket.

Zimmerman’s father has said his son is Hispanic and is not racist. Zimmerman has claimed self-defense.

“I don’t think a man who exited his vehicle after the 911 dispatcher told him to stay inside the car can claim self-defense,” Carl McPhail, a 28-year-old Barry University law school student, said at the Sanford rally.

The 70 protesters at the Sanford rally chanted “What if it was your son?” and held posters saying, “This is not a race issue.” Many carried Skittles.

Martin’s parents and other advocates have said the shooter would have been arrested had he been black.

Jacksonville, Miami and New England are among the teams interested in Tebow. He will likely be brought in as a backup anywhere he goes. Denver could get a mid-round pick in return, but don’t think the Broncos will sweat the compensation much. I think they just want to move on.

The terms mulatto, quadroon, and octoroon originated with the racial policies of European colonizers in the Americas, especially the Spanish. Because civil rights and responsibilities were based directly on the degree of European blood that a person had, such classifications were highly elaborated, and minor distinctions in ancestry were carefully recorded. While these terms have highly precise definitions, in actual practice they were often used based on impressions of skin color rather than definite knowledge of ancestry.

  159. KoolKell Says:

In May of 1918, Hampton Smith, a 31 year old White plantation owner in Brooks
County, Georgia, was shot and killed by one of his Black workers named Sydney Johnson. Hampton Smith was known for abusing and beating his workers to the point few people in the area would work for him. To solve this labor shortage, Smith turned to the debt peonage system of the day and found a ready labor pool. He used that system by bailing people out of jail, people typically arrested for petty offenses, who would then work off their debt to him on his plantation. Nineteen year old Sydney Johnson, arrested for “rolling dice” and fined thirty dollars, was one such person.

After a few days of work on Smith’s plantation, and shortly after being beaten by Smith for not working while he was sick, Sidney Johnson shot and killed Hampton Smith. What ensued after the shooting was a mob driven manhunt for Johnson and others thought to be involved in his decision to kill Hampton Smith. That manhunt lasted for more than a week and resulted in the deaths of at least 13 people, with some historical accounts suggesting a higher number of persons killed. One of the people killed was a woman named Mary Turner.

Twenty year-old Mary Turner, 8 months pregnant at the time and whose husband had been killed in this “lynching rampage” on Sunday, May 19th, made the mistake of publicly objecting to her husband’s murder. She also had the audacity to threaten to swear out warrants for those responsible. Those “unwise remarks,” as the area papers put it, enraged locals. Consequently, Mary Turner fled for her life only to be caught and taken to a place called Folsom’s Bridge on the Brooks and Lowndes Counties’ shared border. To punish her, at Folsom’s Bridge the mob tied Mary Turner by her ankles, hung her upside down from a tree, poured gasoline on her and burned off her clothes. One member of the mob then cut her stomach open and her unborn child dropped to the ground where it was reportedly stomped on and crushed. Her body was then riddled with gunfire from the mob. Later that night she and her baby were buried ten feet away from where they were murdered. The makeshift grave was marked with only a “whiskey bottle” with a “cigar” stuffed in its neck.

Three days after the murder of Mary Turner and her baby, three more bodies were found in the area and Sydney Johnson was killed in a shoot out with police on South Troup Street in Valdosta, Georgia. Once killed, the crowd of more than 700 people cut off his genitals and threw them into the street. A rope was then tied to his neck and he was drug to Campground Church in Morven, Georgia, 16 miles away. There, what remained of his body was burned. During and shortly after this chain of events, it is reported that more than 500 people fled Lowndes and Brooks Counties in fear for their lives.

Some may ask, why bring up “the past” and these atrocities now? “It happened so long ago.” We think we should bring them up and face them for many reasons. We should bring them up to acknowledge the lives lost, along with the reality that no justice has ever occurred for the victims, families and many others affected by these events. We should bring them up because few in the region speak publicly about these events yet wonder why race relations in the area are often so strained. We should bring them up because to date these events remain one of the most gruesome cases of racism and racial terrorism in this nation’s history, yet they are omitted from the history we teach our children. We should bring them up because Mary Turner’s murder remains one of the most horrific crimes committed against a human being in this nation’s history. We should bring them up because so far not one historical marker or grave stone is in place to acknowledge these events and the lives lost during that week of terror in May of 1918. And last but not least, we should bring these events up so we can face our collective past in order to see how it might affect our collective present and future. Please help us do that

    —-

Well, I do sorta know one thing. 3rd hand information, but my brother (big Raider fan) was talking to a guy at his restaurant who had sat next to Jon Gruden on a plane shortly after they grabbed Pryor. Gruden spent some time with the team while visiting Ohio (his home state and a school he still roots for). His assessment of Pryor: “Dumb as f–k!”

I don’t care how athletic you are. You cannot succeed in the NFL at QB if you don’t have a very quick mind to read the defenses, know all the routes and options, and be able to rifle through them in split second decisions. In college, a running QB only has to lock onto his best WR, watch him for a few seconds to see if he gets open, and if not start running. When you see highlights of them making the throws that make you think that they can do more than run, it’s deceiving because they are very simple plays where they only need to make a good throw and not a good read first.

  186. Sullivan44 Says:

Yeah, I’m sure Gruden told a stranger that an active NFL QB is stupid, when that stranger could have been recording him all along. Gossip fail.

If the Patriots want Tebow, look out. Going to a top tier organization spells trouble for other teams of less caliber. Denver is a bottom of the barrell team right now as of today. Peyton is not the greatest thing since sliced bread. Peyton was great, but the neck surgeries are risky business. Dude could be paralized in a heart beat.

Why do some of the Tebow haters hate him so bad? Just curious.

And, wait a minute, you said Watts riots in the ’90s? The Watts riots were in the ’60s, AutumnWind. You must be referring to the Rodney King riots. What white person was shot by blacks during the Rodney King riots? Remember, Reginald Denny wasn’t shot, and he lived.

    ************************
I miss spoke yes they were in S. Central LA. More people were hurt than R. Denny. in those riots. I believe 43 were killed and another 10 shot dead by the National Guard. I believe the majority killed were Hispanic. I think R. Denny has the most coverage because we have video of it. You realize that Asian owned stores were targeted in those riots – right?

If you really think there is no hatred in the hearts of certain people that happen to have black skin towards people with white skin you are simply willfully ignorant. You can not be convinced. I am not going to sit here and waist my time talking to a brick wall. I have experienced that hatred in first person. I know better.

My speculations are based on the following:
    1. Pryor is similar in style and played at the same time as Tebow
    2. Tebow is a better player as evidenced by heisman trophies and national championships
    3. Tebow sucks
    4. Early reports of Pryor are not all that encouraging

NEWBERRY, S.C., June 5 (UPI) — A white man has been charged with killing a black man and then dragging his body nearly 10 miles behind a truck in Newberry County, S.C., authorities said.

Gregory Collins, was arrested and charged with murder in the death of Anthony Hill, 30, who worked with Collins at the Louis Rich turkey processing plant in Newberry, county Sheriff Lee Foster said.

Hill’s nearly nude body was found Wednesday with a single gunshot to the head and a rope around his neck and upper torso. Authorities followed a trail of blood and human tissue from the body to a trailer park where Collins lived nearly 10 miles away, Foster said Friday.

Officers surrounded Collins’s trailer for four hours and then used tear gas before he surrendered, The (South Carolina) State reported.

Hill and Collins reportedly were seen drinking together Tuesday, said Foster, noting Hill’s death and dragging are being investigated as a possible hate crime.

“We have no motive whatsoever as to why these two gentlemen would have been together, then one shoots the other in the head and drags him down the road,” Foster said. “It’s a horrific act of violence.”

Black Man Fatally Dragged In a Possible Racial Killing

    By CAROL MARIE CROPPER

A black man was dragged to his death on Sunday from the back of a pickup truck in a rural section of Texas known for racist and Klan activity, and today three white men were charged with the murder.

The broken body of James Byrd Jr., 49, was discovered on Sunday morning by residents of an area just outside the East Texas town of Jasper, population 8,000. As he walked home from his parents’ house on Saturday night, Mr. Byrd was apparently picked up by the men sometime after midnight and taken to woods, where he was beaten, then chained to the truck and dragged for two miles.

Guy James Gray, the Jasper County District Attorney, called the killing ”probably the most brutal I’ve ever seen” in 20 years as a prosecutor. Mr. Byrd’s torso was found at the edge of a paved road, his head and an arm in a ditch about a mile away, according to an affidavit.

The police charged Shawn A. Berry, 23, Lawrence R. Brewer, 31, and John W. King, 23, with murder. The District Attorney said Mr. Brewer and Mr. King had racist tattoos and were Ku Klux Klan supporters, leading investigators to believe the killing was racially motivated.

The three were apparently roommates in a Jasper apartment.

    R. C. Horn, Mayor of Jasper, said the victim came from a ”beautiful family.” Mr. Byrd’s sisters said he had been on disability and did not have a car but often accepted rides from acquaintances or walked around Jasper, where the number of blacks almost equals that of whites.

Mayor Horn said there had been no unusual racial problems in the town, built on the timber industry. ”Jasper is a city that has a strong bind together, both black and white,” said Mr. Horn, who is black.

But Gary Bledsoe, president of the state chapter of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People, said the eastern part of Texas, which includes Jasper, has been considered a problem area and a hotbed of Klan activity for years. He pointed to problems in 1993 integrating a housing project in nearby Vidor, for decades an all-white town, where an avowed white supremacist threatened the first black residents, and teen-agers dressed in sheets confronted black newcomers.

Mr. Bledsoe called for adding kidnapping charges, making the killing a capital crime. He said that he planned to go to Jasper to help the authorities with the investigation and that the N.A.A.C.P. wanted to help organize a community response, like a march or rally.

Mayor Horn said local church leaders were planning a prayer meeting at the courthouse square for Monday night.

According to the police affidavit, items left in the woods and along the dirt logging road where Mr. Byrd was first dragged led officials to the three men charged. One item was a cigarette lighter inscribed with a Klan symbol that the police said they believed belonged to one of the men.

Mr. Berry told the police he had been riding around with the other two men when he saw Mr. Byrd walking and offered him a ride, according to the affidavit. Mr. Byrd and Mr. Berry might have known each other because they had the same parole officer, The Associated Press reported. Mr. Byrd served six years in prison for theft and violating parole. All three suspects have criminal records for offenses including burglary and drug possession and served jail time together.

After Mr. Byrd was picked up, Mr. King became upset and began cursing, Mr. Berry is quoted as saying in the affidavit. The men stopped at a convenience store and then Mr. King drove to the dirt road, saying he was about to scare Mr. Byrd. The other two began to beat the victim, Mr. Berry told the police.

The Federal Bureau of Investigation may charge the three with violating the victim’s civil rights, said Al Tribble, an F.B.I. special agent in Houston. The national N.A.A.C.P. is also watching the case, said Jean Hitchcock, acting chief operating officer for the organization, adding, ”We call upon all Americans to stand up and be counted and to condemn this for the heinous crime that it is.”

He probably would make a great punt returner and I’m sick of seeing Denarius Moore back there because Moore is way to valuble as a WR. DT: Seymour/ Houston
DT: TK/ Houston (and I think we should add Bunkley, and make it a 4 man rotation)
    RDE: Matt S, Brodine
    SLB: Curry
    MLB: McClain
    WLB: Hill or McIntoch
    CB: Bartell/ Spencer

  361. DKnight007 Says:

Fans at the Arena tonight showed no class booing the owner like that during Mullies night.

The trade getting rid of Ellis was bad, but fans shouldn’t have been classless when Lacob was speaking.

Then again, perhaps Lacob shouldn’t have took the mic in the first place and put himself in that position. Nellie or Papa should have just took the mic.

  362. DJ Johnny Says:

If we follow the GB model, then expect that along with all the no names and UDFA’S who can play, we will still have to have a few big contract impact players.

GB had perennial star in Favre, and then of course Reggie White when they won the SB in 96.

GB will happily pay for big names like Clay Mathews and Woodson on defense and Rodgers and Jennings on offense.

The rest? Just real good players who don’t make alot of money.

GB looks at their RB’s as dime a dozen with guys like James Starks coming out of nowhere and playing better than guys making triple what he does.

If Reggie had alot to do with bringing in guys like Jermichael Finley, Jordy Nelson, Greg Jennings and James Jones…then we are in for some happy times.

  369. HayesDaze37 Says:

    Peyton Manning??

Welcome to the AFC West. It’s one tough mother focker for QB’s…even Hall Of Fame QB’s. Ask Dan Fouts. How many rings did Fouts get while in the AFC West? That’s right.

I’ve seen, with me own two eyes, most of who could be considered top-15 QB’s in this here NFL in my day, and some other legends like Joe Willy himself. The Raiders never just rolled-over for any of them, and they sure won’t for the great Peyton Manning. Glad he’s in the division…it’s going to be a great welcome party in Oakland when he gets here!

  370. HayesDaze37 Says:

Ark — You’re not exited…you’re still here. You might be excited, though.

  371. arkraider Says:

If you wanna be the best, you gotta beat the best!!!!!!

‘Taint scared o no Peyton, bring it on!!!!

  372. HayesDaze37 Says:

Manning made the entire division better, not just Denver. If he stays healthy, the Team (or Teams) that make it out of the AFCW will be tougher because of it.

  373. Sullivan44 Says:

Yeah, Hayes, Manning can check in with Dan Fouts to see how tough the AFC West was 40 years ago, or he can just watch 2011 game film.

  374. Sullivan44 Says:

AFC West is hell for QBs, right, Hayes? You really want to say that one year after the marginally talented Tim Tebow lit the division up?

  375. arkraider Says:

Thanks Hayes! Seems to be a lot of bored English teachers in here! One typo or grammatical error and you guys jump all over it!! Ha, ha.
Go Raiders and I really am excited!!!! Happy w/ Reggie!!!

  376. Sullivan44 Says:

Those of you who want Tebow, haven’t you been listening to Jerry? Reggie’s not looking for big name FAs, and isn’t looking to spend serious money or trade away high picks.

  377. DKnight007 Says:

Warriors management knew they wanted to tank to keep that 1st round pick. They knew they would be undermanned by trading their best player/scorer in Ellis and best interior defender in Udoh for a banged up and out of action Bogut?

Management wanted to tank the season so they can try and keep their 1st Round pick. That pick is important.

That was the reason for that ridiculous trade.

  378. arkraider Says:

Have a feeling that we will have a big signing in the morning! Like maybe Porter for another CB!!!
Gotta call it a night morning comes early for me, 6am or so and I’m up way past my mighty night time!
Carry on and have a good night, yall!!!!

    Raider On!!!!
Code Black with the sirens an lights!!!

  379. DKnight007 Says:

Get your money Wimbley and pretend like you give a crap about playing good hard football every week.

He just got bought out for 6.5 million from Raiders and is making another 6-7 million a year for 5 years from Titans??

    hahaha…sucker Titans!

Same thing with Niners and overpaying for one year mediocre wonders in Brooks, Rogers and soon Smith maybe.

  380. HayesDaze37 Says:

Wasn’t correcting your spelling, Ark. The way you said you were “exited” made the meaning funny. That’s all. Don’t take it too personally, goodnight.

  381. arkraider Says:

    Hey Dknight-
Part 2 of the Warriors trade- stack jack to San Antonio netted a “protected” 1st round pick, did it not?
I love Monta and Ekpe, but the trade was good!!! You’ll see!!

    ^^^^^^^^^
Don’t know…but the one that is not protected is their own pick, not the Spurs pick right?

W’s need to fall within the top 7 worst records to keep their own pick.

  383. arkraider Says:

No worries Hayes!! An no offense taken. G-.nite to ya and Raider On!

  385. Sullivan44 Says:

  387. HayesDaze37 Says:

MR, troll — You bore me. Why do insist on swinging away in futility to get me in a “debate” with you? You’re not worth wasting many of my pleasantly Don Ramon-soaked brain cells on.

Tebow was a once-in-a-lifetime fluke, time and circumstance…and it was all for naught. All for nothing, in terms of getting Denver nearer a Super Bowl. Actually, I’m wrong there…because of Tebow, they’re getting Manning now — and he can do what Tebow never will.

This year will prove that, no matter where he lands, Tebow was a flash-in-the-pan in 2011. Any other superstar QB in the AFC West do anything of note lately?? That golden boy down in San Diego? Yeah, he tore it up last year.

Take your contrarian point of view (of everything), MR, and stick it. You may not have a decent point, but at least don’t waste our time with nonsensical talk like Tebow’s a real QB. He’s nothing more than a footnote in AFCW history…one that will fade rapidly as soon as he’s out of the League.

  388. arkraider Says:

Dknight. Not sure, don’t know much about NBA bizness but as I understand we got their 1st and we’ll keep it no matter what.

But the thing I don’t understand is that if the W’s end up tanking it does that mean we will have 2 1st round picks??????

Either way as long as Bogut can remain healthy I think ultimately Warriors fans are gonna be very happy about the trade. As much as I love Monta and Ekpe, this was the right move!
(Bogut’s health, crossing fingers, salt shaker over shoulder, etc.)

    G-nite all and Raider On!!!!!
    Gotta go to sleep.

Anyone who says the AFC West is a tough division for quarterbacks after a season where Tim Tebow lights the division up has a lot of nerve calling anyone dense. Face it, Hayes. That was one dumb, homerish comment. Your Don Ramon (probably Boones) must have been kicking in and like anyone who can’t handle their alcohol, you got carried away and said something that any sane group of adults would have laughed you out of the room for.

CNN was reporting on the immediate success of Apple’s just released IPad (not IPad III or IPad the next generation. Simply “IPad”). . .

They reported more than one million have been sold already & Apple’s new management team was rewarding their investors with a stock dividend.

They went on to say the relative low cost of the devises made this possible. then they went on to say this was possbible because they are manufactured in China.

This wasn’t possible just because of the low wages of the Chinese workers but because of stringent, almost slave-like labor methods; Chinese labor napping just mere feet from their work areas, penalized for leaving the manufacturing structure, etc.

The Apple spokesperson said the reason these devises were made overseas was because of trade treaties like NAFTA engineered by the government in the 90’s.

Talk about dinengenious crap! We’ve been hearing about corporate downsizing since the 80’s. . .Wasn’t it the corporate lobby that designed the trade treaties in the first place?

So, let me summarize; the corporate media (Yes, Sully 44, one of the only times I have agreed with you when you laid out the ownership structure of media corporations, first in your post #127 & when you clarified in post #150. Remember, 80% of all corporatre media are owned by five corporations. Thus the so-called “liberal media” is a myth created by corporate media. The only entity of “liberal media” I can think of is Democracynow. There are others but none of them are televised like Democracynow. And they exist through the benevolence of private donors & contributions by their ardent listeners/viewers)reported that a major corporation took advantage of trade agreements engineered by corporate lobbyists reporting directly to corporations who pr’ed that the government (forked tongue speak for corporations) out of their benevolence arranged for said treaties to allow corporations to ship manufacturing jobs from the US to, say, China to take advantage of pennies on the dollar labor & the lack of civil labor practices to sell their product to, say, the US. And, BTW, Apple went on to say this had been done so they could sell their product in markets like, say, China. Where the citizenship makes far less than their American counterparts. So does this mean Apple products sell for a far less profit margin in china than the US? Wow. Gonna take ALOT of Kool-Aid to wash that one down.

So, the government controlls the media? And the government engineers trade agreements? Surely this opens the door for oceanside property in Minnesota to be sold on the open market. . .LOL

I’ll let YA come in and discuss the finer points of this with you, lol.

Wimbley played mostly as a DE after week 3 when ShoNasty went down. And when he did play LB after Curry was acquired he was all over the place. Sometimes in man press coverage with the TE, other times rushing the passer.

YA says that Curry is our SLB and can’t play WLB because he has no pass rushing ability.

Getting Peyton Manning was the only way to get rid of Tebow without the lynch mob of Denver fans asking for his head. Every day that Tebow was the starting QB was a waking nightmare for Elway. This was like one of those messy, costly divorces that you gladly pay for.

  551. HairyBush Says:

Titans signed DE Kamerion Wimbley to a five-year, $35 million contract.
The deal includes $13.5 million guaranteed. Wimbley was already guaranteed $6.5 million following his release from the Raiders. He’s an excellent consolation prize for a team that missed out on Mario Williams as it got bogged down in the Peyton Manning sweepstakes, and should greatly improve a pass rush that notched just 28 sacks in 2011. That was good for 31st in the NFL. Wimbley has essentially been a 3-4 outside linebacker for most of his career, but he will play right end in Tennessee’s 4-3 defense. He’s notched at least 6.5 sacks each of the past three seasons. The Titans have a lot of pass-rush potential, with Derrick Morgan a full year removed from ACL surgery on the left end and the explosive, high-motor Wimbley rushing off the weak side
    ————————————

Then he says Manning can ask Dan Fouts how tough the division is. Uh, yeah, Fouts played, what, 40 years ago? He did admit he was drinking tequila. Nothing says blog comedy like a homer drinking and commenting.

It had very little to do with man coverage. Man coverage is great, if you have players that can do it. The Raiders didn’t, and outside of Asomugha, haven’t for a while now. —————-

Agreed that nobody played it as much as the Raiders did. Mostly I think it was a problem when you have 260lb linebackers covering WRs. Again – you have to adapt to the strengths of the players on the roster. Al never got that.

When you’re playing elite QBs, however, you have to be able to cover in man. Maybe not for the entire game, but a good QB will tear apart zones pretty quickly. Gotta press his receivers and disrupt the timing of the plays.

  589. Marks hair Says:

    582. Na a paid him too much.. But the titans will like him at the price they got.

  590. Macho Man Randy Savage Says:

Gotta agree with the man2man analysis…gotta press the WRs, and have fresh and very talented D-lineman hurrying up the QB…if you rush three and drop a 320lb DT into coverage most QBs will find an open guy.

  591. Sullivan44 Says:

A good QB, ANY QB, will tear man apart quicker than he will zone. That’s the point. Your red herring in this argument is that zone coverages fails Of course it does. But not as much as man coverage does, that’s the point. That’s why since the ’80s NOBODY uses primarily man coverage, except for one team with an out of touch GM.

  592. guest123 Says:

    ———————

Not really. For one example, KC beat GB last season mainly because they were able to keep their corners in man-to-man and put pressure on Rodgers.

Against zone coverage, a QB can throw to a spot. Against man coverage, the QB needs to go through his reads and find his best option. Press-man allows the defender to disrupt the QB’s timing by jamming his receivers at the line.

The truth is, defenses need to mix up their coverages. They need to use both. Using 100% man or 100% zone won’t get any defense very far.

Teams that use primarily man coverage? Saints and Jets do it pretty well. Bengals and Seahawks, too.

    ————————-

No team uses 100% man or zone, so the argument doesn’t hold water.

Again, it depends on the players you have on the roster, and what you’re able to do with your front seven.

Saying man coverage is bad because Al Davis used it is akin to bashing oxygen because Al Davis breathed it.

All teams use man coverage. To what extent they use it is dictated by the strengths of the rest of their defense, and the ability of their players to hold up in man coverage. For instance, if you have a few good press-man corners but your front seven can’t put pressure on the QB? Chances are you’re going to use more zone. It’s about adapting, and understanding your team. Not about sticking to one philosophy no matter what. That’s why Al’s defenses over the last 25 years have been poor.

Someone in here said yesterday that the Broncos are going to keep Tebow for “special situations”. lmfao. Yeah, I can see Peyton being cool with that. Basically, he’s the QB between the 20 yard lines. Then when they get down to clutch plays, he’s benched for Tebow…

See all those Manning highlights ESPN’s been showing? Notice the ones against the Raiders, the defender is always running behind the receiver. Torched in man. It’s embarrassing. So behind the times.

    —————————-

More BS. Man, this guy is so easy to prove wrong.

The Raiders’ stats vs Peyton Manning are about as good as any team’s could be expected to be…and WAY BETTER than his averages against the rest of the League.

For his career, Manning has a 3-2 record against the Raiders, winning the last three, and has completed 113 of 184 passes (61.4 percent) for 1,261 yards, 12 touchdowns and eight interceptions for a passer rating of 85.4. — JMcD

Manning vs all opponents, career stats:
Comp Pct: 64.9 (about 5% higher than vs the Raiders)
Passer Rating: 94.9 (about 10% higher!)

MR — You’re embarrassing. So behind the times.

Ridiculous. In all reality, we couldn’t have weathered too many more years of such ridiculousness.
    ——————————————
You got that right. And, in fact the franchise hasn’t weathered it all that well. And folks think this team is a contender? I say McKenzie is on a 3-year plan.

  665. YoungAmerican Says:

Personally, I like Garay. A little younger and a little more versatile than Franklin. Can play 0-tech unlike Bunkley.

I’d like to see him in 4-3 and 3-4 looks. He can be disruptive in the 4-3 unlike Franklin, but can be a true NT if the Raiders need him to be.

  666. Sullivan44 Says:

Clever of the Warriors to have their puppets in the local media accuse the fans of “ruining Mullin’s night”. The owner ruined Mullin’s night, by daring to go near a microphone knowing the fans were upset about that trade. Just a poor PR decision.

Most fans I know thought thats exactly the kind of deal he would get. Its not big money, considering the new market value set by Mario, Wimbleys getting what, less than half the money per season and 1/4 of guarnteed money? compared to marios deal

  682. DMAC Says:

    Hill or
    Rocky Mac

  683. DMAC Says:

  684. Sullivan44 Says:

It’s hardly a surprise Tebow would welcome a return to his home state, but the Jaguars and Dolphins may have both taken themselves out of the running for his services after signing veteran free agents. The Bucs are presumably not an option. The reality, of course, is that Tebow has no control over where he’ll go unless he’s granted his release. That does not appear likely at the moment.

since Tommy Kelly, Seabass & Shane have not been restructured … does Reggie view their contracts “in whack” ???

and are we going to let Tyvon Branch play all season on the franchise tag?
    =================================================

No and No. Kelly’s contract is high but not crazy high. Janikowsky is also high but again, not Rick James high. Routt’s contract was Rick James high. Wimbley is a pass rush specialist who did not deserve Mario Williams or Calias Campbell money. Lechler is being paid 4 times what the next Pro Bowl punter is being paid. Now Lechler is the emergency Q, and he is pretty well on his way to the HOF, but FOUR TIMES the next guy? That is out of whack.

With Branch it would make more sense to everyone to restructure that tender, spread it out over a few more years and get Tyvon more money overall, reduce his risk and help the team.

  812. PhillyRaider Says:

    —-

That sounds like exactly like what is going on, but it’s important to clarify that “save money” is not a one year goal. They are doing damage control to a long term cap situation that was unsustainable. The cuts were not just about getting under the cap this year, but about taking the hit now to get rid of bad contracts that would impact the next several years. Ideally, part of that means bringing in new players with better long term deals for even more future cap health.

Yeah, it’s going to make it hard to field a strong team this season, but I look at this way. The Raiders have rookies in several instrumental spots: GM, HC, DC. Just like players, they are going to make rookie mistakes that will ultimately cost the team some games. They will improve with experience and make the team more competitive with more seasoning.

Put those together, and if you’re going to have a year where you are doing on the job training for your executive staff that will make it very difficult to create a championship level team, that might as well come at a time when you’re fixing the cap and taking the one year hit on the roster as well.

I think he missed like 20% of his PAT’s one year.

If Tebow leaves the Donks, we should sign him right away. You know he’ll be supermotivated (especially twice per year), the guy just gets ugly wins, and he’s a good, young, tough backup for CP.

    —-

The guy gets ugly wins WHEN the defense is holding the opposition to under 14 points. He has one or two scoring drives in him per game (that’s all the quota that God has granted him :-) . If the D is giving up 21+ per game, do you really want to count on Tebow to consistently give you more than 3 scoring drives per game? I definitely do not!

    =======================================

It was classless. But then again, modern sports fans don’t know what the fook is going on anymore. In other words, if at halftime of the lst preseason game this next year, Reggie McKenzie walks out to midfield at halftime and announces that Carson Palmer has been traded for Tim Tebow, Raider fans would probably start cheering and dancing…

  826. HayesDaze37 Says:

Tebow?? Not no, but fock no.

Why would we want to add a guy who will require an entire change of gameplan for, every single practice? Blocking schemes, routes, timing…everything changes when you go from a pocket-passing QB to a running QB.

If a Team doesn’t plan on playing Tebow all the time, he’d be a terrible waste of roster space, and coaches’ time…for a guy who may have to change positions to even have a chance to be on an NFL roster in 2-years.

Tebow’s a “luxury” we need to stay away from. He’s a GM’s albatross…just ask Elway.

Tebow will be a Raider, he fits both Al & Reggie’s plan; he’s a winner and he’s a football player.
    ==========================================

The Bronco’s should cut Teblow right now. They cannot keep him on the roster even with Manning. What a team should really do with Teblow is turn him into an option FB. In other words, if you bring him here, you would have Carson as the Q, Dmac at HB and Teblow at FB, with the option to pass. That would be a very tough offense to game plan, and something the league has never seen before.
