Spencer reportedly added to roster

By Jerry McDonald - NFL Writer
Monday, March 19th, 2012 at 3:12 pm in Oakland Raiders.

Multiple media outlets are reporting the addition of cornerback Shawntae Spencer to the Raiders roster.

Spencer fell out of favor with the 49ers last season and played in nine games with no starts. He is a veteran of 77 starts and is familiar with defensive coordinator Jason Tarver, who was the 49ers staff throughout his career in San Francisco.

Oakland has also been lined with cornerback Tracy Porter, who played for Dennis Allen in New Orleans. Spencer ideally would provide experience as a nickel corner should Oakland bring aboard another corner to go along with second-year players DeMarcus Van Dyke and Chimdi Chekwa.

The Raiders confirmed Spencer visited the facility Friday but have not yet confirmed his signing.

One plan considered by the previous coaching staff has apparently been scuttled. Free safety Michael Huff said Monday afternoon he will remain a safety.

First person that came to mind when I heard pm going to Denver was shaughnessy or curry. If curry hits manning like he hit the lt from sd, peytons heard might roll off, sad but true.
    +++++++++++++++

Actually, not true at all….the doctors claim that after this surgery Manning’s neck is may even be stronger than before and he stands no more of a chance of suffering a devastating neck injury than any other player in the NFL.

When asked about a possible move to cornerback for Michael Huff, Reggie McKenzie reportedly mumbled something to the effect of….”What? Have you seen his stiff hips….can’t play corner….Hue Jacksons is crazy.”

  • alex7

It’s being reported as a one-year deal, so this should have no impact on whether the Raiders pursue Porter, or whether Porter is interested.

DVD & Chekwa were the only 2 CBs on the roster
Don’t you need at least 5?
Throw in that 2 of them got 1 yr prove it deals..it only makes sense

    =============================================

McCann’s also on the roster. Doesn’t change that in Year 2, when you’d expect both these cats to push for starting jobs, Reggie’s bringing in replacements instead.
    ==================================================
Who’s to say Dvd & CC wont compete for a starting position?
It just happens to be March…let things play out

As far as im concerned Dvd & CC are still on the team and will compete for a position.

Routt,Cj & Lito were cut not these 2

Soon as we sign Asomugha & Revis let me know, until then im not jumping offboard

More low priced solid potential players. Keep em coming Reggie.

    More LBs and O-Line please.

Dakota, independent doctors have said that regarding Manning’s neck? Or Manning’s doctors?

I know ligament transplants can result in a stronger ligament, but hadn’t heard the same about bone re-growth. Damaged nerve endings can also cause some weird numbness long-term.

“The kicking shoe worn by the Oakland Raiders’ Sebastian Janikowski on his record-tying 63-yard field goal is the most recent acquisition by the Pro Football Hall of Fame. Janikowski topped off Kickoff Weekend in 2011 with a booming 63-yard field goal in the Raiders’ win over the Denver Broncos on Monday Night Football.

The field goal came on the last play of the first half to put the Raiders in front 16-3. His 63-yarder was the third in NFL history. The record was originally set by Tom Dempsey of the New Orleans Saints in 1970 and tied in 1998 by the Broncos’ Jason Elam. Janikowski’s shoe will be placed on exhibit in the Pro Football Today Gallery not far from where Elam’s shoe and ball he kicked on his 63-yard field goal is located. Dempsey’s kicking shoe is on display in the Hall’s Exhibition Rotunda.

Interestingly, Janikowski nailed a 70-yarder with distance to spare in pre-game warm-ups that night.”

I was there and saw it live!!!!!!! Lechler set a franchise record punt in that game too…..but neither were as cool as watching the 2010 59-14 Massacre at Mile High live and in person!

Independent doctors said that about it getting stronger, and Manning’s doc and the Colt’s doc issues a joint statement some time ago.

    Dakota,

Did you see the reports of how Minnesota’s owner stepped in at the last minute and eff’d us out of Beasley?

Have you heard the reports on how Fisher wasn’t trying to go to the bench and was already disgruntled about his reduced playing time?

  • Dakota

My sources tell me that when the Broncos and 49ers worked Peyton Manning out, Eli Manning actually snuck into the locker room and put Peyton’s gear on and did the workout.

  • aig-raiders

Low priced vet with some legs left. I like it. Better than DVD and a bunch of non performing rookies for sure.

Sure, the T-wolves didn’t want to take on a bad contract, which the Lakers insisted on. If we wanted Beasely, they would have taken the trade exemption and the pick…..but Jim Buss didn’t want to take on the extra salary….because, you know, with $150 million just in tv revenues, it would eat into his fun money!

And the only story I heard about Fisher was speculative about how he would have handled the situation.

Either way, you can no longer hide your head and think things are great…..the Lakers are making tons more cash, but still getting cheaper and are not putting winning first.

If this was about championships, Beasely would be a Laker and the T-wolves would have a first round pick and the Lakers would have more payroll, but a bench that was ten times better…..

  • Dakota

And if you man Mike Brown doesn’t get his head out of his azz soon and start Sessions, that trade will be a total bust too.

    Get real!

Bottom line with the Minnesota trade was BOTH front offices had completely agreed upon the trade and were ready to submit it to the league. With SEVEN minutes left before the deadline, the owner stepped in and said no deal. 1st rd pick was already in the deal.

Porter may be seeking more coin elewhere…

Free agent CB Tracy Porter has scheduled visits with the Titans and Rams.
Porter visited the Bengals last week. It’s believed he was in Oakland visiting the Raiders on Monday. Still only 25, medical concerns may be lowering Porter’s market value to the point where he’d accept a one-year, “prove-it” deal. Related: Titans, RamsSource: Paul Kuharsky on Twitter

Now Mike Wallace in Denver might scare me….

So much for blowing up the roster on D.

    Looks like we’re going with:

DL: Houston, Seymour, Kelly, Shaughnessy and Bryant.
    LB: McClain, Curry and someone.
DB: Bartell, Spencer, Branch, Huff, DVD, Chekwa and Mitchell.

Same crew with the exception of Routt and Wimbley and I’m fine with it.

Can’t wait to watch these guys play for Allen and Tarver, I’m assuming those two will come up with sound game-planning and schemes.

I am shocked he picked Denver. I would have thought. Tenn or the Niners. Chiefs making moves, Broncos made a move, I like the Spencer signing and with Bartell, at least we have experienced depth and vets who could teach our young corners something other than man coverage. No long term solutions, but will really do his HW next year for the 2013 draft and have a first hand impression of the current roster.

  • J Hill

    Wrong!

The deal was for Fisher and the #1 pick.

And whatever it was for, Minnesota’s GM agreed to it!!!!

LOL @ forcing Fisher on someone. Did we “force” him on Houston?

Wrong? not according to the LA Times:
“In the nixed deal, the Lakers would have sent Portland the first-round pick they obtained from Dallas in the Lamar Odom trade. Portland would have sent Jamal Crawford to Minnesota, and Minnesota would have sent Anthony Tolliver to Portland. The Lakers and Portland would have also given an undisclosed amount of cash to Minnesota.”

And yes we did force Fisher on Houston….you want our 1st round pick for nothing in return, you have to take on Fisher’s salary….which they promptly dumped….I thought you were smarter than this Jhill. Catch up my friend.

Not if you’re good at picking out the players. How do you think the Patriots keep finding good players nobody’s heard of?

  • Deja vu

We really don’t have clear cut starters @ corner (although i like Chekwas game). I like what Reggie is doing by bringing in corners to compete.

This unit got torched more often than not last season, i’d bring in Porter as well. It doesn’t hurt, there’s no guarantees any of these CB signings will even be on the roster opening day.

McCann’s is on roster for no other reason than his return abilities which tells me Ford will be shopped/traded for draft picks.

    ===========================================

It would depend on whether Reggie and DA see DHB as a legit starting wideout or not. I doubt they’re bringing in anyone at that position.

  • Twocents

I think McKenzie wants to move up to at least a high third round pick. Trading Ford might get that done.

  • J Hill

The Lakers dealt the same #1 pick and Fisher that was in the original deal that Minnesota’s GM agreed to.

    It’s not that hard.

Lakers sending CASH to Minnesota on top of giving up Fisher and a #1 pick. So they were willing to PAY Minnesota to take on Fisher????

    LOL!

So they ended up saving MORE $ by not sending him to Minnesota?

    Good Job Buss Jr!
