Could Bush return to the Raiders?

By Steve Corkran
Tuesday, March 20th, 2012 at 8:00 pm in Oakland Raiders.

For as much as Michael Bush loved playing for the Raiders the past five seasons, he spoke often about the prospect of being the lead back. If not for the Raiders, so be it. He wants a chance to show what he can do as the lead back.
He got that chance last season as a result of an injury to lead back Darren McFadden. Bush started the final nine games and rushed for a career-high 977 yards.
Yet, Bush knows that regardless how well he played, he was just keeping the job warm for when McFadden returned from his foot injury.
Now that McFadden is healed and ready to go, Bush once again would be relegated to a complementary role in the Raiders offense.
Hence, Bush hit the free-agent market Mar. 13 in an effort to see if he could find the opportunity he has yearned for since he entered the league with the Raiders in 2007 — he sat out his rookie season while recovering from a broken leg he suffered in his final season at the University of Louisville.
For whatever reason, the market for veteran running backs such as Bush — regarded as one of the best on the open market — has been lukewarm, at best.
Bush has visited the Chicago Bears and Cincinnati Bengals. Both times, he left without a contract in hand. The Seattle Seahawks and New York Jets reportedly also are interested in Bush’s services. Interestingly, he has no chance of being the lead back in either Seattle or Chicago next season.
Therefore, it brings about the prospect of Bush returning to the Raiders in 2012 if he isn’t able to land a starting gig elsewhere.
That’s something few thought possible as recently as two weeks ago. Yet, now it seems more and more plausible.
Bush has said numerous times how much he enjoys playing for the Raiders. So, if all things are equal, it would seem to mean the Raiders have a strong chance of getting back Bush if things don’t change soon.
Don’t rule it out.

    M,

I know you have a personal agenda, which is you don’t like !slam. That’s your right, but I’m sure an educated man like yourself understands that people are different. There are Extreme musl!ms, radicals, conservatives, liberals, etc… I’m sure the KKK are not a fair representation of Christianity.
To answer your question, I thought/ know The Romans destroyed the library, and I felt terrible for the destruction of the Buddhas of Bamiyan. Many other musl!m countries have more respect towards others and their faith.

It’s a RB by committe era.

Bush’s best opportunity is here as DMAC is a question mark.

Do we want him back? Dude can’t block.

We need some LB’s and a NT. we could replace his yds with a cheap RB off the street.

Now that we play Manning and Rivers 4x a year, we need some serious pass rushers.

Very effective for as long as we’ve recorded History.

Old time Religion doesn’t hold the sway it once did in the Western world.

Still a straw that stirs the International drink however.

    That’s well said.

Bush would have helped his case had he shown he’s a guy who can get in the endzone from the 1 yd. line with 3 tries to get there on multiple occasions, or that he can block well, or that he can average more than 3.8 yds. a carry.

Teams see this stuff when they’re considering shelling out a lot of money and they realize they can get almost anybody to do that.

Alot of the Bush proponents here want to ignore the hard stats on him.

That being said, I would like him back as a guy who can help with the load.

He’s not bad…he’s just not good enough to demand a big contract.

Bright minds were snuffed out because of the threat posed to the established “Religious” Cabal(s).

Regular “faithful” people are brought closer through faith and community and a shared common purpose. It’s the A holes at the top of “religion” that F it up for the majority.

I think that most young people are introduced to “their” religion by those responsible for their upbringing. NO emotion involved other than the cries to not want to go to church on Sunday because it’s boring. lol

Faith in anything, is a belief in things not seen.

Faith applies to any aspect of life, not just Religion.

ITs really old but here goes “Wimbley received a five-year, $35 million contract with $13.5 million guaranteed.” per ESPN
ITs looks about seven million a year total and less than 3 million/year guaranteed. Well he gets his 6.5 million parting gift from the Raiders makes about 7 million this year on top of that(depending on how its distributed just guessing its per year and not backloaded) and then gets cut. Dude lands a fortune for 3 sacks outside of San Diego.
Probably more money than I’ll make in my lifetime.

Its still not the money we were gonna pay if he stayed! He would have made that amount in about one year here…

    Agree 100%

Texts written long ago with good intent have been twisted and abused by those that want to control, and pit one against another to their benefit.

Many Kids get stuck even as adults and are not strong enough to get out of the box.

Actually I think it has a decent chance of working okay. He is a good waist bender who can sink his ass and get some leverage but he seems to have trouble with tougher matchups. His strongest area is pass rushing but I wonder if a combo of up & down, mostly rush from both, would have been his best bet

I’d sign up his agent if I needed one, I know that.

  74. JB Says:

Take Bush back only if he learns how to block & learns how to deliver a blow at the LOS. Those are 2 out of 3 of his outstanding shortcomings. The 3rd being his inability to get to the edge on a run. He’s just too slow. Reggies already got 2 first year RB’s under contract that will no doubt give Bush a run for his money. Bush getting a spot on the 2012 53 man squad is not a sure thing even if he wants to come back.

While he did well on his first two full games last year, let’s not forget that he tanked the next 5 games. I believe his average for those games was 1.8YPC – certainly nothing to write home about. That’s probably what killed his marketability in FA. Nobody’s going to get excited about a 3.8YPC RB who can’t/won’t block in pass protection.

  75. Raider O Says:

I thought Tenn and SF were better options. Tenn allowed less than 25 sacks last year, they have CJ, Good WRs, Good OL, and an above avg defense. SF are loaded with talent, and all they need is a QB. They have a good OL, weapons on offense, and a great defense.
Manning chose Denver because they are willing to give him total control of the offense.

I have FAITH in my Raiders.

Its hard for me to dislike manning. The man is a class act. I don’t want him to get hurt. i want my team to beat him straight up.

If Bush comes back, this is his immediate competition in addition to Tiawan Jones.

  83. alzadoX Says:

While he did well on his first two full games last year, let’s not forget that he tanked the next 5 games. I believe his average for those games was 1.8YPC – certainly nothing to write home about. That’s probably what killed his marketability in FA. Nobody’s going to get excited about a 3.8YPC RB who can’t/won’t block in pass protection.

    *******************

he started last 9 games and ended up with ~977 yards. Before DMac went down he was averaging only 2.0 ypc but also blew some short yardage & goalline runs as he did again as starter. But he averaged 4.2 ypc for last 9 games, 3.8 ypc overall. He had a few bad games but not 5 in a row. He averaged nearly 100 yards rushing per game as starter, and had one ~235 yard game combined rushing & receiving, which was one of the first couple or so games he started

If this doesn’t motivate Allen, Palmer, McFadden, Seymour, Houston, Branch & the rest of the team then they just need to f’n quit football and start wearing women’s clothes.

Huh?? The dude is only 36. You act like he’s 46 or something. How old was Gannon when he came here? As far as his neck is concerned, he was checked out by three different teams’ medical staffs and they all wanted him. Signed a $96 million deal. I think McK will find a RB who fits the system and has some power and tackle breaking ability, who can block and catch in the middle rounds.

That is where McK makes his money come draft time. In the middle rounds. Plenty of RB’s in this years draft also, just like there are plenty of DLinemen.

Had a crazy family friend of my moms who had a place in La Jolla and she was nuts for the Raiders and would always have big parties when they were in the playoffs. I grew away from football and was big into Jerry and the Dead and ended up following them to the bay area and the year he died was the same year the Raiders moved back home and then that Oakland- Denver game u speak of and I was hooked! Went from Dead Head to Raider Head in the blink of a Nap. Kaufman run, he had a few that day if memory serves. Love me some Raiders, but still love the Dead as well.

Farve wasn’t half the cerebral QB that Manning was but almost played in a SB at age 40… simply because of his arm and experience.

usually RFAs aren’t signed to offer sheet. Bryant has fine potential good young versatile

but we are overloaded with players with similar talent on DL lotsa penetrating 3-T type DT who could also play base 4-3 LDE or 3-4 DE. But we have no NT or space eating 2 gap DT. Reggie Mac likes draft picks so…

kinda suprised they kept beaten up Seymour at $15
    million

hard to get value in trades this time of year since unrestricted Free Agents can be had for $$ only

someone like Kelly could be worth a lot more in a trade if a top contending team needs a DT or 3-4 DE as season nears

    +++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

    I second the motion.

First, Bush really wears down the DL on any team and second, when McFadden and Bush alternate there is a great change of pace which catches the DL off guard.

If Bush does resign, we need him to show up in better shape than he has in the past.
Sometimes there is a question as to his stamina.
Sign him Reggie-but not at the salary he wants.

    Mornin’ Nation!

Since it’s slow here at work right now, I compiled a quick list of remaining FA targets the Raiders might want to look at. Some of these have been thrown out there already, but I decided to be thorough:

Dan Koppen, C – The very definition of a line general, Koppen would be a great 1 or 2 year option if it’s decided to make Carlisle backup to Brisiel and keep Wiz at left guard.

Demetrius Bell, T – Talented, but injury prone, which may keep him from being a starter somewhere. He can play either left or right tackle and would be a perfect backup.

Matt Leinart, QB – Has familiarity with Knapp and is probably the best backup option left on the market at this point.

LaDanian Tomlinson, RB – I include this because I’d find him finishing his career with the Raiders extremely amusing. He’s still got enough to be able to split time with Jones and be effective if/when DMac goes down. Would prefer to re-sign Bush though.

Aubrayo Franklin, NT – Franklin didn’t shine in the Saints’s 4-3 last year, although he’d be just a rotational run plugger when the Raiders are in that alignment, which should be fine. And when the Raiders play a 3-4 look, he’s a perfect nose tackle.

Mark Anderson, DE – Would be a great nickel rusher and not too hurtful as a starter should Shaughnessy go down again.

Andre Carter, DE – Same as above

Manny Lawson, OLB – Would make a fine backup strongside linebacker or even a starter if it’s decided to keep Curry on the weakside. Excels in run support, which as we all know is a department the Raiders need as much help in as possible.

Chase Blackburn, MLB – Ideal backup, good enough to play and not hurt the team if the starter goes down. Great special teamer.

Leroy Hill, OLB – Not flashy or brilliant, but no real holes in his game. Great weakside option. Can be injury prone, though, so depth would be needed if he’d start. Has history of off-the-field troubles, but seems to have wised up and kept his nose clean lately.

O.J. Atogwe, FS – Atogwe fills a common theme you’ve probably noticed by now: not quite good enough to be an NFL starter for 16 games, but good enough to fill in adequately in the event of injury.

    Thoughts?

  196. SilverNBlackPA Says:

    Forgot one:

Marcus Trufant, CB – At his peak one of the premier CBs in the NFL. I still think he has enough left in the tank for a year or two IF he checks out medically. However, the lack of interest he’s received on the market to date makes me skeptical that his back hasn’t totally given out on him. When healthy, he’s not only good in coverage, but is unafraid to come up and make a tackle in run support.

    @SnB

    I agree with u/

The defense was terrific and the O-line were road graders. Arian Foster is a good RB, but really overrated. If Ben Tate can have the kind of rushing performances that Foster did, it’s got a lot to do with that OL. I wish we could have signed Eric Winston to go with Mike Briesiel. That right side of the line was always a problem spot.

I personally feel (I know I am in the minority) that DMC is way better all around runner than A. Foster. If only he had the Houston OL.

That combination of dominant OL and stingy defense is what Super Bowl champs are made of. And Houston is throwing that all away. Or at least the momentum they once had.

80% of the time when you see a “league source” mentioned, it’s the player’s agent.

Of those free agents I listed in that big post above, Franklin, Carter and Lawson have direct connections to the Bay Area as ex-49ers. Leinart and Tomlinson spent much of their lives in SoCal and Trufant and Hill are close to the West Coast by being ex-Seahawks.

Maybe Reggie could work out an incentive-laden deal for Bush on a one-year contract; if DMC gets injured again and Bush reverts back to the starter role, they could factor in bonuses for games started and yards produced. If DMC goes down again, cut ties and go with Bush – renegotiate the deal and make it longer term. I hate to view it this way but I believe this is McFadden’s make-or-break year!

    ++++++++++++++++++

Haha, RIGHT. That would mean Reggie would have to have interest in Tebow, which I’ll bet he doesn’t. Nor do the Raiders have draft picks to trade. And Elway will keep Tebow before trading him within the division; it’d be a PR nightmare to have to see him twice a year, particularly if Manning busts as a signing. (Unlikely, but still)

BSPN’s reporting and analysis boils down to throwing a ton of schit at a wall and hoping something sticks.

Plus we have Pryor who has all Tebow’s running skills and might develop into a real QB someday. Maybe I’m the only one, but I believe in Pryor. If he ever becomes anything, Cork will never hear the end of it from me.

Exactly. Any of these players could fall. Id say Pead and Turbin MIGHT be gone before the Raiders pick, but Gray is NICE, and he may still be around, as well as Ganaway. Cyrus Gray would be a real nice replacement for Bush, IMO. Is good between tackles, has good hands, as he also used to play WR. Even seen him return kicks. Yeah, would definitely like to see Gray get drafted as a backup RB.

Eagles acquired MLB DeMeco Ryans from the Texans in exchange for a 2012 fourth-round pick.
The teams will also exchange third-round picks, with the Eagles moving back 12 spots. A Pro Bowl middle linebacker early in his career, Ryans wasn’t was as suited to the weak-side interior in Wade Phillips 3-4 scheme. After a slow start in returning from Achilles surgery, Ryans came on stronger late in the season. He fills a major need in Philadelphia, where Andy Reid’s squad has long been in need of a three-down tackling machine in the middle. Jamar Chaney (neck surgery) will move back outside. Considering Ryans $5.9 million salary, the Texans’ haul was as much as could reasonably be expected.

    Reggie!!!!!!!!!!!????????

Why didn’t you pull the trigger on this deal?
    A 4th rounder?
Ryans would be an instant upgrade to Romac.
I guess DA thinks he can turn Romac into a player.
