Spencer wasn’t a system fit for SF’s new defense and Bartell had a broken neck (which has since healed and checks out medically). Too many other needs to sign those two AND Porter when we’re up against the cap.

The org beleives that spencer is better value than porter…
March 20th, 2012 at 12:21 pm
Jets GM Mike Tannenbaum indicated that Chaz Schilens’ role is yet to be determined.
“He could catch a 100 balls … or he could be a special teamer,” said Tannenbaum, who referred to Schilens as a “really impressive kid.” Braylon Edwards is still on the market, and coach Rex Ryan hinted early in the offseason that a reunion could be in the works. Schilens’ role likely won’t be decided until training camp.

—————–
Chaz would be destroyed on Special Teams full-time. He limps off the field at least once every 2-3 plays he’s in on. He’s a fine receiver who looks great sometimes…and is fragile all the time.
I hope Chaz gets 70-receptions this year, as the NYJ lose to the Raiders in the AFC Championship in Oakland next January. (Hey, anything’s possible.)

The Raiders are signing some guys with BIG question marks. We, and ReggieMcK, will be fortunate if half of them work-out as well as we hope they will. If 2/3 of Reggie’s personnel decisions work well — especially the big, franchise-shaping moves, like #1 QB and the like — we’ll be in good hands. A little injury-luck would help an awful lot.

15. Or he could ride the pine with a boo boo.
Fact is, Schilens size 6,4, 220 and speed sub 4.4 make him a threat. His ability was never in question far as I’m concerned and after 2 injuries back to back his cardio was off last year.
This season will be make or break 4 him but if can stay healthy he’s solid
Have a great day Raiders!

March 20th, 2012 at 1:31 pm
I hate the broncos, but watching this presser…elway is a funny dude.
March 20th, 2012 at 1:34 pm
Manning insists he’s been open with teams about his entire medical history. Although he’s happy with his progress, Manning repeated several times that there’s “no question” he still has work to do, and is “not where I want to be.” Manning did say, however, that he could play this Sunday if needed — just not at the level he’s accustomed to playing. Manning realizes he doesn’t have “14 years left,” but plans on playing for a “long time.”
March 20th, 2012 at 1:38 pm
Elway was also frustrated with all the dirt balls and air balls and screwballs Tebow scattered to the wind. He was frustrated that Tebow would play like Joan Rivers for three quarters and like Philip Rivers in the fourth. He was puzzled by Tebow’s stats. The kid didn’t even complete 48 percent of his throws. Peyton Manning completes 65 percent of his.
Now that’s funny…the Joan to Phillip Rivers comparison!

Right here. Maybe we DO get Porter after all. Nothing wrong with a stronger DB corps as long as we can still afford our other needs.
March 20th, 2012 at 2:12 pm
Tracy Porter is the top cornerback left on the 2012 free agent market. He has drawn interest from the Raiders, Bengals, Rams, Broncos, and Titans, among others.
Porter was expected to visit Raiders headquarters early this week, but that meeting was postponed after Oakland signed Shawntae Spencer to go along with Ronald Bartell
-PFT
***
Attn: Raider O
why was Porter’s visit “postponed” if Bartell, Spencer, Chekwa & DVD aren’t our Top 4 CB’s and Reggie has money to spend?

Reggie has a lot of work to do if he wants to get this right. He has to pay somebody you cannot biuld on a shoestring budget like some on here think. He has to pay someone.
My biggest concern is the new coach and his phylosophies. I know we will run a 3/4 because that is what the DC ran at Stanford. Chester was the assist Line coach. The are a few players on that Stanford defense I like Chase Thomas for one, Terrence Stephens the Dlineman the other.
Unlike most I think we need Bush back for a variety of reasons. He played hurt(ankle) last year and gutted it out but no one appreciates that. Anyway I hate to go into next year with one reliable back. Bush was the most reliable performer on offense yet some want him gone. BIG MISTAKE IMO!
March 20th, 2012 at 2:25 pm
Reggie needs to get Tracy Porter (CB) and a minimum of two new OLB’ers. A new NT in addition to Ivey would be nice also. Let the 3-4 defense begin.

I think Reggie is on the right track but it will take a while.
Its almost like if you ran up a lot of credit card debt and you had to tighten your belt and live cheap for a year while you paid it off.
We have been mortgaging our future for today for so long (bloated contracts trading draft picks etc) and now its time to pay the piper which is not exciting for us fans.
March 20th, 2012 at 2:27 pm
Peyton went from wearing one of the best looking Uni’s in the league to wearing one of the ugliest , probably the ugliest in the league , yuck
March 20th, 2012 at 2:28 pm
MR, troll — Anybody who just assumes ReggieMcK will get everything right is a fool.
Even if Reggie makes 100%-correct personnel choices, he’s not going to enjoy perfect fortune with them…this is real life. The Raiders are close to being a good Team…but they’re not too far away from being a below-average Team again, either.
I have supreme confidence in ReggieMcK to succeed, but I know it takes a lot more than smarts and money to have a good run as a GM.
I’m skeptical of Reggie?? Pffft. Chase your own tail, troll.

What do you know about these 2 new B’s that were signed:
• Rashawn Jackson RB, 6′1″ 240#

Both of these guys has Bush type size. I suspect that one of both may make the 53 squad.

March 20th, 2012 at 2:40 pm
Correct Me if I am wrong but wasn’t Tracy porter the cb who picked off manning for the winning td in the sb, lol. Reggie needs to sign him for that reason alone , Payton would get mind fuggged twice a year when he faced us and sees tp.2 on the other side of the line. Let’s get him Reggie he has bounty mentality too.

If, you have a 8-8 team, you might as well have a 8-8 payroll.
March 20th, 2012 at 2:44 pm
Let’s talk defense. Can Kelly play the NT position. They signed a guy named Travis Ivey – 6′4″ 325 as a NT. Don’t know a lot about him but theoretically, he could be our new NT in a 3-4 D. Assuming the NT rotation is Ivey, Kelly & Houston, we have an available DE rotation of Seymour/Shaughnessy, Bryant/Houston. I’d put Curry & Romac as ILB with Goethal as BU-ILB. We need 3 new OLB (2 starting & 1 BU). I’d like to see Bartell & Porter at CB with Huff & Branch at safety. Thoughts?
March 20th, 2012 at 2:45 pm

Can you give us some specifics as to what players should have been kept, and how they would have been kept considering how far we are over the salary cap, and what big name free agents we should have signed by now, and where that money was to come from?
Having a high payroll does not equal success. If that were the case the Raiders would have won their division ever year for the past 9 years because our payroll was top three nearly that entire time.
Reggie cutting players with major holes in their games, like Wimbley and Routt, is what had to happen for this team to move forward and get some space to sign legit players in the years to come. The Raiders are not pinching pennies, they are simply trying to extricate themselves from the mess Al left in place.
And besides that, there were many teams who excel on the field and still manage the cap well….49ers and Broncos both won their divisions last year and both have boatloads of cap room to improve their teams this year.
I do not anticipate the Raiders suddenly becoming cheap like the Bungholes….just smarter in how the money is spent.
If you think the old ways were better, I would suggest looking at the Raiders record since free agency began….
Additionally, you have to have good players who WANT to come to Oakland. For the past 9 years, only players with injuries, bad work ethics or other major flaws wanted to come here….they bilked an old man out of a fortune. That stops now. But once good players sees what kind of solid organization is finally being put in place by Reggie and company, they will start to put the Raiders back on top of their destination wish list. But that will take time. Reggie can fix this mess overnight.

The most important thing Reggie can do for himself, and the Raiders, is to make sure we always have a top-10 QB on the roster. Top-10 QB = Competitive game-in/out

Really? Says who? We don’t have a 3-4 NT and we have zero depth at LB. It would be a disaster. All indications are actually that we stay with a 4-3. Allen was just playing lip service to the 3-4 as far as I could tell. Allen’s defense in Denver was a 4-3. Of course sometimes they will move into a 3-4 to keep the other team guessing, but you can’t play a 3-4 predominantly without committing to it, and we have neither the personnel, nor the cap space to make that transition.

I don’t disagree with you there, Dakota — But, we (Reggie) can’t be afraid to risk the big money on the occasional contract…it’s the only way to hit one. Big money brings big stars. Hopefully.
The most important thing Reggie can do for himself, and the Raiders, is to make sure we always have a top-10 QB on the roster. Top-10 QB = Competitive game-in/out
+++++++++++++++++++
Time will tell…first Reggie has to unwind some of the bad contracts and then we will see what he will be like in free agency. I agree about the QB idea, but that is easier said than done. I think Palmer will be a top 10 QB next season, with a full training camp, and if the WRs can stay healthy.

Travis Ivey – NT, 6′4″ 325# currently under Raider contract. We should also try to find another NT from FA. Our BIG problem is LB. We need 3 OLB’ers (2 starters & 1 BU). After that 3-4 is a reality.
March 20th, 2012 at 3:14 pm
Really?

I am totally with you regarding the personnel, we dont have a NT nor do we have the LB’s to run a 3-4, 2 positions I have been screaming we need since the end of the season. I personally would like to see us stay 4-3 we will see what DA has cooking.
March 20th, 2012 at 3:15 pm
Linebacker Manny Lawson — The 22nd pick in the 2006 draft, Lawson has disappointed as an NFL pass rusher with 16 sacks through six seasons. Lawson is a freak athlete at 6-foot-5, 240 with low-4.4 speed and a 40-inch vertical, however, and he’s wicked smart (43 Wonderlic score). Lawson can set the edge against the run and has always been effective in coverage. With experience in both 3-4 and 4-3 schemes, Lawson should be generating more interest than he has so far.
-PFT
Worth a look?
March 20th, 2012 at 3:15 pm
Ok YoungGM, thanks for the update.
So where do you put him in a 3-4?
——————–
ILB, probably on the strong side. He can shed blocks in the middle and make tackles. Not sold on him in coverage, but he’s not much of a pass-rusher, either.
I think the Raiders will emphasize 4-3 this season, though. They’ll need to make some higher profile moves if they intend on emphasizing a 3-4. An NT and two LBs would be needed, as well as LB depth.
March 20th, 2012 at 3:15 pm
No use in spending big money on a FA, unless that guy is gonna push you over the hump.
We’ll see what we have this year, and build on that, next year.

What’s up with Bush is he staying or going , updating my Madden franchise rosta.
March 20th, 2012 at 3:15 pm
So what’s the surprise draft-day trade gonna be? My guess is Louis Murphy, Bruce Campbell, and our top 2 Raiderettes for some depth at outside linebacker
March 20th, 2012 at 3:16 pm
The Reggie will definitely go down swinging at some point in time.
A big FA “splash” will happen next season and beyond.
This is the year of the purge, but I still think we can win the division.
10 well placed wins will do it, and I think the Hue Jackson-Dennis Allen tradeoff is worth 2 games in itself.
March 20th, 2012 at 3:17 pm
Manny Lawson would be worth a look at either SLB or WLB. Similar player to Aaron Curry, but has put together a couple solid season in a row. Unspectacular player, but good fundamentals. Versatile enough to play 3-4 OLB on the strong side, too.

JFB – just the man I’m looking for. Good game Saturday. Hopefully, you understood by the end of the game that Pitino is actually a great coach, and if anything; we just have one too many spurts where our shooters can’t knock anything down. But that complex morphing man-to-man press that falls back to the matchup zone had New Mexico vexed. I can honestly say they didn’t get more than 5 good looks all game. Again though, good game. Drew Gordon gave us fits and didn’t let the Ville run away with it, but Siva finally woke up late in the 2nd half. Russ Smith had a HUGE game.

The few spurts with the shooters won the game. Tough loss for the Lobo’s, Gordon played his azz off, but nobody else could really hit an outside shot.

Agreed, but don’t forget when the press isn’t turning you over; it’s draining those legs to make the jumpers that much harder. The few good looks they had, they missed, with the exception of that one late in the corner to cut it to two. Gordon did play his tail off though. Man, I knew he would give us problems and said as much, but he exceeded my expectations and did nothing but impress. He made himself a lot of money with that game. Clearly someone who doesn’t watch the sport. It’s actually basketball at it’s finest. The problem is the finishing, so more often than not, the end result of the play washes a possession out, but you hardly ever see NBA teams playing the right way, with players constantly cutting, flashing, screening, and moving properly. And the lack of superb finishing is made up by emotional crowds and a majority of the kids playing for the genuine love of the game. And the only teams where the NBA draft affects the kid’s energy and effort are teams like Texas and every team in the Pac-12 that no one who really loves the sport cares about…
Iso ball at it’s finest would be Kobe Bryant continuing to ignore Pau Gasol on a night he’s shooting 9-14, or one of the million other NBA teams that don’t play ball the right way except the Bulls (and I’m a Knicks fan, so I know all too well horrible basketball)……that my friend is crap advertised as gold….

++++++++++++++++++++++++++
Cowboy people know Ratliff isn’t the answer at NT…due to his size:
“How will a Nose Tackle benefit the Cowboys?
Jay Ratliff has given the Cowboys a lot of production from the 1- and 0-technique since becoming a full-time player in 2006.That said, his production has come while knifing through the A- and B-gaps and disrupting plays in the backfield. While impressive to watch, this style of play causes problems for the Cowboys schematically. Well-respected 3-4 Coordinator Dick LeBeau explains, in this 2009 interview with ESPN’s Greg Garber, that
“[the Nose Tackle's] job…is to disrupt the flow of the play. If two guys have to block one, that means somebody should be free someplace.”
When Ratliff penetrates, his intention is to escape from the two linemen trying to block him. If successful, Ratliff enters the backfield, but two offensive linemen are now free to attack the second level of the defense. Ratliff is not, in fact, freeing up anyone, but rather attempting to free himself. This difference in strategy causes the Inside Linebackers to stay closer to the line of scrimmage, as they must provide run support in the event the Nose Tackle penetrates the wrong hole (any Gap the Running Back isn’t headed to). As you may have guessed, this penetrating style is commonly employed by 4-3 teams, as the second Defensive Tackle allows for more thorough Gap Coverage–both penetrating the line. The 3-4 Nose Tackle should instead attack the body of the Center, and be prepared to shed him in order to tackle the Running Back in either A-Gap. This style of play frees the Inside Linebackers to drop into coverage without fear of being gashed in the running game.
This confidence gained by the Inside Linebackers spreads to the rest of the defense. Safeties can play deeper, knowing the ILBs won’t be beaten on quick routes. Corners can play more aggressive press coverage, with confidence that the Safeties will be providing help over the top. The Outside Linebackers and Defensive Ends will be facing manageable opposition (on one side, a Tackle and Guard–the other, a Tackle alone), all but guaranteeing quick pressure on the Quarterback.
If there’s one thing that the Cowboys’ Defense could have used, it’s confidence that their teammates will execute their responsibilities. A prototypical Nose Tackle may be the Missing Piece that sets the dominoes in motion, leading the Cowboys back to the Super Bowl.”

Harvard coach Tim Murphy thought that Bryant could be a four-year starter and potentially a professional player and compared Bryant to a Southeastern Conference player.[3] At Harvard, Bryant majored in economics and played 32 games in four seasons. In his senior season, Bryant was named second team All-Ivy League after leading Harvard with eight quarterback hurries and 4.5 tackles leading to losses.[4]

Yeah, Manny isn’t the type of player you break bank on. 3 years, $9 million would be max. Not that hard to find “workmanlike” LBs who aren’t impact playmakers. Getting bogged down in a long-term deal would be a mistake.

DeMeco Ryans (2-time Pro Bowler) to the Eagles for a fourth-rounder and a swap of third rounders in 2012.
He tore his Achilles in 2010, but played well in 2011. Word is he wasn’t a good fit for the Texans’ 3-4 defense.

Trayvon Martin Shooting Shows Perils of Lax U.S. Gun Laws
The Justice Department opened an investigation this week into the killing of Trayvon Martin, a 17-year-old high school student who was shot dead on Feb. 26 in Sanford, Florida.
Martin was returning to the home of his father’s girlfriend from a 7-Eleven, armed with a package of Skittles and an iced tea, when he was killed. George Zimmerman — a self-appointed neighborhood watch captain, according to news reports — had called 911 and proceeded to follow Martin, even after the dispatcher advised him not to. Soon after, Zimmerman told police, he shot Martin.
Crime is a problem in the U.S. So are guns. According to the local police chief, Zimmerman, 28, had a permit for a concealed weapon, which is easily obtained in Florida. He also had a penchant for calling the police, having made 46 such calls in the past 13 months to report suspicious behavior. Based on news reports, it appears that Zimmerman believed he had much to fear from crime. As things turned out, Martin had much more to fear from Zimmerman’s gun.
Martin didn’t have a lot of protection from the law, either. Florida’s “Stand your Ground” law allows people to use deadly force — even before an unarmed person — provided they “reasonably believe” it’s necessary to defend themselves. It’s a shockingly low standard, but it’s not inconsistent with the highest law of the land.

Scalia’s Opinion
Writing for a bitterly divided Supreme Court in 2008, Justice Antonin Scalia brushed past the ambiguous language of the Second Amendment and the convoluted history of gun rights in the U.S. to establish or affirm (depending on your point of view) a right of individuals to own guns. Yet in his 5-4 opinion in District of Columbia v. Heller, even Scalia maintained that the right is not unlimited. “We do not read the Second Amendment to protect the right of citizens to carry arms for any sort of confrontation,” Scalia wrote.
The question, then, is what public policies are constitutionally justified to prevent the wrong “sort of confrontation”?

At present, it seems, not many. Since the Heller decision, which overturned Washington’s strict gun law, controls have been crumbling across the nation. In Oklahoma, lawmakers appear poised to enact an “open carry” law, allowing residents to display firearms in public. The National Rifle Association and other lobbyists for gun manufacturers are pushing for loaded guns to be allowed in college classrooms and dormitories. Legislation proposed in Congress would force states to allow holders of concealed weapons permits from other jurisdictions to carry guns where it’s otherwise illegal.

Compensation for Slowlando ?
Not going to happen.
He’ll have his last non-productive year in Oakland (if off field developments allow for EVEN that) then will be released and fade into obscurity.
We’ll get as much compensation for Slowlando as we got for JaMoron.
The true compensation will be ridding the franchise of his atrocious play and attitude.

Wimbley is a tweener. Not effective at all as an OLB, and too small to play as a 4-down DE.
Tennessee will use him as a situational pass rusher, at far less than he would have made here. RM and his agent tried to make it work, but he was going to way too expensive to keep relative to what he would have contributed here.
Once RM realized that he wasn’t going to be able to get proportionate value, he was let go. Simple.

Davis was many things to many people. Love him or hate him, he was good for pro football.
And he left us with some great quotes and slogans. Here are the best of them:
WE DON’T TAKE WHAT THE DEFENSE GIVES US
WE TAKE WHAT WE WANT
WE DON’T SAY NEVER
WE DON’T SAY ALWAYS
FOR US IT IS BETTER TO BE RIGHT AT THE MOMENT THAN TO BE CONSISTENT
SOMEWHERE WITHIN THE FIRST THREE PLAYS THE QUARTERBACK MUST GO DOWN
AND HE MUST GO DOWN HARD
COMMITMENT TO EXCELLENCE
PRIDE AND POISE
I’D RATHER BE FEARED THAN LOVED AND RESPECTED
I THINK THE GREATNESS OF THE RAIDERS IS IN IT’S FUTURE
I THINK THAT (ADD RAIDER HERE) IS THE GREATEST (WHATEVER) TO PLAY THE GAME
JUST WIN BABY
AND ANYTHING SAID BY ANY NARRATOR OF A RAIDER HIGHLIGHT FILM WHILE DAVIS WAS ALIVE
Goodbye Al Davis.

Of course Al would have brought in a new DC. And hamstrung him with his insistence on the same outdated “bump-and-run man coverage with a single deep safety” defense that the rest of the NFL figured out during Reagan’s second term.
March 20th, 2012 at 5:57 pm
One of the many cool things about Al Davis was he had a strong hand in making the NFL what it is today. As a pioneer of the NFL, his vision shaped and influenced so many aspects of the game that we see today. But the cool thing I liked about him was he wasn’t afraid to take the bastards to court if he felt like they were dissin him. Just sue baby!
There should be a Al Davis award each year for a player or coach or even a team who had to overcome the most difficult of odds to attain success. Plunkett would have been a great recipient. For example, a person who has overcome great poverty or tragedy and had great success in the NFL, a person for example like Amy Trask, a woman amongst greedy rich men who own NFL teams, but she keeps her poise, or for example, Bo Jackson, just because he is Bo Jackson.
The Al Davis award would only be for those who have taken achievement to the next level.

Nobody knows exactly how it happened. Wikipedia lists four possible theories:
Ancient and modern sources identify four possible occasions for the partial or complete destruction of the Library of Alexandria: Julius Caesar’s fire in the Alexandrian War, in 48 BC; the attack of Aurelian in 270 – 275 AD; the decree of Coptic Pope Theophilus in AD 391; and the Muslim conquest in 642 AD or thereafter.

Yeah, it’s effin hilarious how the cheerleaders on here don’t mind if millions get tossed out the window just to alleviate their anxiety. WTF, it’s not their money, and of course who cares that Davis nearly destroyed this franchise utilizing this philosophy over the past decade–with pathetic results. Same old same old. Same old bs posts on here about mindless personnel moves, when the bigger issue remains how McKenzie has to completely revamp the business model that Davis “implemented.”

Mark went underground since hiring McKenzie, and that’s the way it’s supposed to be. I can see the change.
