Raiders add yet another cornerback

By Steve Corkran
Wednesday, March 21st, 2012 at 12:25 pm in Oakland Raiders.

The Raiders signed three-year veteran cornerback Pat Lee to a one-year contract, according to NFL Network.
Lee, 28, spent the past four seasons with the Green Bay Packers, so he is someone that new Raiders general manager Reggie McKenzie is very familiar with.
Lee appeared in 32 games in 2008, 2010 and ‘11. He sat out the 2009 season with a knee injury he suffered the previous season.
Lee has started only one game in the NFL. He spent most of his time with the Packers as a core special-teams player. He figures to get a shot at cornerback with the Raiders, who are seeking to replace jettisoned starters Stanford Routt and Chris Johnson.

I could see signing Branch long term because of his age. Seymour doesn’t make tons of sense to me, Unless Big Reg is going to be doing some wheeling and dealing around the draft. If I’m a betting man I’m saying there won’t be any big moves this year.

    *******

Do you see anyone taking him off our hands, especially since we paid him all that up-front bonus money for this year? I don’t see any wheeling and dealing that will move Seymour’s deal. We’re stuck with him imo.

    ——————-
when I said wheeling and dealing I was not refering to Sey, No one in there right mind would take him. I was just saying that maybe keeping Seymour would make more sense if Big reg was going to add more significent pieces to the team this year. Then I could understand keeping Seymour because Big Reg truly intended on making this more than a rebuiding year. As I said, I highly doubt that will happen.

I think the proofs in the pudding, so to speak. We are all optimistic of the new regime and new structure, but if Reggie Mac’s going to tighten up the pursestrings…..there is no way…..

    no way…

that anyone can interpret the Raiders 2012 offseason moves as anything but cap-clearing, rebuilding, look to 2013 moves.

Reggie Mac’s shooting blanks and forgot to load the gun.

Too funny…these guys have zero clue how the Raiders could have kept guys like Routt and Wimbley and went on to fill out the roster, but they expect Reggie to somehow do so.

All of the crybabies who are whining because we have not made some big free agent signing, or are claiming we are rebuilding because we lost such greats as Wimbley and Routt, and those who claim we should have dumped Seymour, even though that was not possible….those people.

  16. YoungAmerican Says:

Here are some possible scenarios I’d like to see play out:

    Restructure:
DT Tommy Kelly, WR Darrius Heyward-Bey

    FA targets:
    OLB Manny Lawson
ILB/OLB JoLonn Dunbar (or ILB Jonathan Vilma?)
    DE Dave Tollefson
    DT/NT Antonio Garay
    QB Billy Volek
    OG/C Dan Koppen

    3-4 draft:

    3rd (compensatory) – DE/OLB Jake Bequette, Arkansas
    4th (compensatory) – DE/OLB Bruce Irvin, WVU
5th – NT Damon Harrison, William Penn
5th (compensatory) – DB Robert Blanton, Notre Dame
6th – RB Terrance Ganaway, Baylor

    4-3 draft:

3rd (compensatory) – LB Sean Spence, Miami
4th (compensatory) – FS Janzen Jackson, McNeese State
5th – NT Damon Harrison, William Penn
5th (compensatory) – OL Matt Reynolds, BYU
6th – RB Terrance Ganaway, Baylor

    ***********

I never thought Routt or Wimbley were great, good but way overpaid, and the market showed that as they went on to sign for roughly half what AD paid them.

When you say we couldn’t have dumped Seymour, yes we could have dumped and taken a $7.5M hit to be rid of him.

And if it’s whining or crying that your favorite team is sitting on the sidelines while 2nd tier and 3rd tier FA’s are signing reasonable contracts with division rivals, then go ahead and call it what you want.

Schefter doesn’t have finite details, but the deal has not been approved by the NFL. Per Schefter, the Rams “could wind up getting back into play” if the trade is nixed. The Jaguars and Packers also had interest in Tebow. Stay tuned.

    Well, it kind of is.

I have players who I’d like to see in Silver and Black, too. But I’m not about to complain if the Raiders don’t sign them. I don’t know that these players fit into what McKenzie and Allen’s vision for the team. And considering 2nd and 3rd tier free agents are far from being clear difference-makers, I’ll trust their judgement if they think they can find contributors cheaper in the draft, or after the draft in FA.

  37. DKnight007 Says:

Well, I will take Barnes back for cheap and for depth and competition purposes at RT.

    *************

    Hey,

I knew the situation was dire. Everyone did. But Jerry was talking about the myth of “cap hell” and ways to work the system. I prepared for some reality check and belt-tightening. But I was hoping the austerity measures would open up some space for a key vet signing or two. I was hoping for quality over quantity. So far only Breisiel is the only mild splash in free agency. The cap room created with the restructures should have led to at least two more Briesiel type deals. As the FA’s fly off the board, it gets harder to believe that Reggie Mac’s plan is to compete this year.

Reggie has to figure out a way to field a 53 man roster, and you people want him to spend our limited cap space on a couple of free agents that will make you happy….well, sorry, but Reggie has work to do trying to muck up the mess Al left and getting this franchise afloat once again. He does not intend on overpaying mediocre players….which is what got us into this predicament in the first place. Reggie has to mine for cheap talent this year, in order to position the team going forward. You all should be polishing his shoes.

    ———————
I respect the fact Big Reg has a lot of clean up to do But… It remains to be seen if there will be any shoe polishing going on. I am hoping things work out. I do not profess to be a GM, That still does not mean I have to agree with all of his moves.

The Denver Post reports that the holdup in Wednesday’s Tim Tebow trade to the Jets is a provision requiring New York to pay a “kick back” worth north of $5 million in order to acquire him.
The exact amount is $5,063,750, and per Tebow’s language-heavy rookie contract, the Jets must pay the money to the Broncos for the trade to be finalized. We suspect there are ways for Denver to work around this, but for now it’s a holdup. Per the Denver Post’s Mike Klis, the Jets are understandably “balking” at paying the kick back, and “there is a decent chance this (trade) may die.”

There is so much more than a players contract that goes into the compensatory pick allocation. First, if your team signs free agents that are qualified, then you don’t get a pick for that player. I think we get a 3rd rounder for nnamdi and maybe a 6th rounder for gallery.

Gradkowski was the Raiders’ Tebow. A “never gonna last” QB who supplied a much needed shot in the arm.

  315. HayesDaze37 Says:

The best thing to happen to Tebow today was the NYJets deal falling apart. Probably gave him another year in the NFL past this coming season.

If he fails in NY (which is not where an “unpolished” QB needs to go) this year, Tebow will be out of the League in 2014. Tebow wants no part of NY…it’s why his brother’s so happy to throw Jax back into the mix publicly.

Oracle, I believe there is an initial count. In other words, if you team loses 4 players that qualify, but you sign 1, the you can only get 3 picks, hence boss canceling out one pick. Those other considerations u mentioned come into play when a team signs the same number of players they lost.

From a 2010 article that I found looking for the Al Davis quote, I think this sums it up well:

“As Detroit Lions head coach Jim Schwartz explained Wednesday morning, you can’t have too many serviceable defensive backs.

“You’re going to play more defensive backs than you are at other positions,” said Schwartz, known as one of the NFL’s brightest defensive minds. “You’re not just going to play four. You’re going to play five for half the game and you may even have a quarter of the game when you’re playing six defensive backs.

“The other thing to look at is defensive backs get hurt at a higher rate than just about every other position on the field. Other positions have gotten bigger and bigger and bigger. Defensive backs have stayed the same, particularly corners. So with everybody else getting bigger and corners staying the same, it’s not a matter of if somebody gets hurt and has to miss a game, it’s a matter of when.”

That was two years ago, when we started seeing the emergence of several teams going pass happy. Now, we can expect maybe 8-10 teams targeting 5000 yards passing based on the playoff results in the 2011-12 year. 6 good DBs (meaning you probably need depth on your roster of 8) is going to be essential to defend against the passing offenses we’ll see.

I think Bush is more valuable than many are giving him credit for…..so what he isn’t a big play back….how many +20 yard runs are there in a season anyways…

Should he be a starter? No, not unless he is sharing time.

Can he pass pro, yes….just not as well as one would expect considering his size….

Can he catch? Yes….but he shouldn’t be in on 3rd downs in passing situations anyways..cause he can’t make a LB miss….

He runs hard, he maintains ball security…

Remember last season wasn’t necessarily the Offenses fault….we win either that Buffalo, (2nd) Denver game, or Detroit game and we are in the playoffs….

Bush would have been a huge part of that….had it materialized….

Bush is a quality team mate…he does his job…doesn’t cause locker room drama….

Nice hustle and special teams recovery against the Jets.

Gotta agree here. HOW MANY TIMES did we see the Raiders leading after half and it was run Bush up the middle over and over to start the 2nd half? Later in the game, Again, run Bush over and over for no gain. Very late in the game 3rd and long, run Bush. Punt. Oh no, the other team is coming back. How could that happen?

  407. Zymurge Says:

Regardless of his size, Bush is a patient runner and not a slammer. He doesn’t blindly hit the hole, but waits for it to materialize or he tries to adjust. The problem is, in a power blocking scheme when the hole isn’t there, an adjustment is usually a radical reverse or some nifty dancing to make some dudes in the backfield miss before you get passed the bodies in the trenches.

However, in the ZBS, it’s ALL about reading the gaps. Those gaps depend on how the defense defends on that play and how the OL zones matchup. The gaps can show up in multiple different places for the same play. A good ZBS runner (think Thomas Jones with the Jets) has the patience and then the ability to quickly recognize the gap and then burst into it.

Remember, Bush pretty much learned how to run in the NFL during the Raiders transition into Cable’s ZBS, first as the line coach and on up to head coach. It’s what he knows. With a return to the ZBS, it could be a great match for him where he could actually be more effective than he was last season if given that many starts. He still won’t bust 40 yarders, but more of the losses of 2 or no gainers will turn into small positive gains and he’ll have a net better average.

    ===========================================

True, but I think McClain should have funneled Grant back toward the pursuit, instead of letting him get outside since the contain was wiped out. At least that’s the way I remember it. I have trouble watching that play. It angers me.

    ——————-

Part of that particular play was a gap discipline issue on the line, though. Both of those holes were WIDE open. No-win situation, really. Either way it’s a big gain. If McClain takes the right gap, it’s likely just a 20-yarder instead of a TD.

    @@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@

We’ll see. I though Barksdale did pretty well at RT (looked lost at guard, tried at 4 positions) and was progressing well but once the regular season starts I watch the game not the players. In preseason, he looked like he needs to learn to use those big long strong arms better and keep defenders off his body. He has a good natural pass set and feel for pocket, but seemed to have some trouble when things don’t go as planned. We’re changing to ZBS this year. Among other things discussed in numerous good posts IMO above, ZBS system stretches range for blocks, need blockers who can adjust and get position on defender, react to defender, keep balance when not engaged, etc moreso than power blocking. I am not saying Barksdale will or will not work out in ZBS, though reactions as a ROOKIE IN PRESEASON did not appear to be his strongpoint. I have supported bringing back Barnes since we didn’t give Winston a holla.

RT bookend is important, competition in preseason will determine winner, and I think there are 3 good young prospects on roster (this based on I have heard they like Zach Hurd too, I never saw him play, practice squad last year)

I understand what you’re saying, J Hill. To me, makes sense from a football perspective if they use him (Tebow) as they should. I think that if Sanchez stinks it up the fans in NY are going to be calling for his head anyway.

The Jets extended Sanchez as a show of faith in him that he’s their guy. It’s up to him to prove it, and if he’s a true leader and a warrior he will step up and perform and not worry about a guy that most people know isn’t a viable, long-term NFL quarterback. If he isn’t able to handle THAT, then the Jets have the wrong guy. I see this as a completely different situation than the Orton one in Denver because Orton was clearly not someone the Broncos were viewing as the long-term answer for them.

  511. RAIDER WEAPON X http://www.raidernationstation.com/raider_nation_station Says:

WHY ARE BUSH AND OTHER BACKS GOING BUST?

IBA’s Steve Corkran’s article “Could Bush return to the Raiders?” mentions a soft market not only for the talented 6-1, 245 lb Free Agent but Running Backs in general.

    Why?

In 2010, 7 teams threw for over 4,000 yds. In 2011 12 teams threw for 3,900 yds or more including 2 teams (New Orleans and New England) who threw for over 5,000.

With the League making it a Federal crime to breathe near a reciever and touching a QB a mortal sin, offenses are making the most of the artificial advantage. An advantage created by the League and designed to make the game more exciting.

With defenses gearing toward stopping the aerial onslaught, by adding high end pass rushers and DBs, the Raiders should feel all the more reason to re-up and load the Oakland offensive cannon with bowling ball Michael Bush.

Those high flying offenses are grounded when sitting on the sideline and a time of possession dominating, ground churning running game is the answer.

Bush of course wanted to test Free Agency to seek not only a starting spot but starter money.

Its looking more and more like a lucrative, long term contract may not happen. Thats too bad for Bush who proved last year he can be a lead back. After fellow RB Darren McFadden went down he shouldered the load and rushed for a career high 977 yds.

Most Raider faithful know how Bush, a potential first rounder before the draft, broke his leg and slipped into the 4th round where Al Davis selected him.

He sat for a year, healing, rehabbing, learning and becoming one of the most well rounded and capable backs in the game. Unfortunately just as hes hitting his prime, the value of ground pounding Running Backs seems to be at an all time low.

That means someone will likely get a bargain for the former Lousiville rusher.

Bush has said he likes it in Oakland, Greg Knapp’s return likely means an emphasis on the run and if history is an indicator, the versatile Bush should see many reps spelling Darren McFadden.

Given DMC’s injury history and that of 2nd yr Running Back Taiwan Jones, Bush would or at least should, be a welcome insurance policy for an offense looking to tote the rock.

That is, if the price is right.

With the new regime pinching pennies, Bush will need to take much less than the $8 million a Franchise tag would’ve given him for 2012.

It will be intersting to see how Knapp uses DHB. I’ve maintained for a long time that he could be a real weapon if used correctly. He catches the shorter passes better than he does the longer ones and is a physical mismatch for both corners and linebackers. Too big and physical for the corners, too fast for linebackers.

I would like to see us get him the ball BEFORE running 25 or 30 yards down the field and let him use his size and speed to get the yards AFTER he catches it.

    DHB????

    ********************************************************

It will be intersting to see how Knapp uses DHB. I’ve maintained for a long time that he could be a real weapon if used correctly. He catches the shorter passes better than he does the longer ones and is a physical mismatch for both corners and linebackers. Too big and physical for the corners, too fast for linebackers.

I would like to see us get him the ball BEFORE running 25 or 30 yards down the field and let him use his size and speed to get the yards AFTER he catches it.

I agree DHB is a threat catching balls and running with it but HAVE YOU EVER WATCHED DHB (TRY) TO TRACK AND CATCH BALLS THROWN OVER HIS HEAD?

Those teams were better than we were to begin with. It would have been nice to have been able to rely on our defense a little more when McFadden and everybody else went down on offense, and when we were making the transition from Campbell to Palmer at QB, but as we know our defense couldn’t be relied on to do anything but look pathetic when it counted.

Um, yeah. I think if you read my post again you’ll find the part where I say that he catches the short ball better than he does the long one.

If he can be used that way more often it will change the way he’s covered at the LOS. Less cushion equals more opportunity to run by the defender, which equals better separation, which equals less fighting for the ball down the field which leads to a better chance of him catching the deep ball.

    Make sense?

Yes that’s why I agreed with your post read first part of my comment. DHB is best when catching balls thrown in front of him and/or in the clear when facing QB and then running with the ball. However, he’s GETTING BETTER on his weaker points too. Players can improve, DHB could improve a lot. It’s not DHB’s fault that AD selected him 7th in the whole draft.

The Wildcat stuff definitely works, especially down in the red zone. But you can get just about anyone to run it. Adding Tebow is a curious decision when you consider all the questions about Sanchez. It undermines him big time. “Competition” is good for every position EXCEPT QB.

I respect your opinion, J Hill. If Sanchez doesn’t do his job and Ryan knee-jerks then the Jets will have an issue, no doubt.

Tebow has proven that he can be very effective in short-yardage and in the red zone, and has also proven that he can win games when he replaces the starter for whatever reason. I think that makes the Jets better, and I think that’s why they traded for him.

In my opinion it’s up to Sanchez to play like a starter, and for Rex to not panic if/when he struggles. I don’t think that those are unreasonable expectations for any coach or starting quarterback, no matter who they play or coach for. If everybody does their job and the Jets win fooball games it won’t be an issue. If Sanchez is terrible or injured, at least they have someone to turn to that has demonstrated that he can win. Before they traded for Tebow they didn’t have that.

I was watching the Denver game and those two rarely got open. I actually think letting go of Braylon Edwards hurt Sanchez.

EEeeee, still a problem since he has cement hands and traps the ball with his stomach, even leaving the ground on relatively short passes in order to catch it with/in his stomach,

If he misses these kinds of balls, it’s likely an interception whereas the long balls are usually just incompletions.

Agreed. If McK doesn’t sign a NT in FA, it’s almost a guarantee they will draft a NT and maybe a DE and OLB and a RB with their picks.

The DLine position is very deep in this years draft.

I see right through The Game on this one. They just did this contest to gain more publicity. I went to the tryout at The Englander in San Leandro, just to check it out and meet my man Tittle.

I read the the contract and disclosure form from one of the contestants. It says they will only pay the winner between 1k-10k…ANNUALLY and they can dump you at any time.

honestly, I don’t have enough of a chance to watch other NFL teams to know who to sign. But I watch the Raiders and I know what we need

    LB at least 2

another CB only if can add a projected starter at right price

RB backups power back, goalline,& short yardage + double as special teams

    NT/DT run stuffer

edge rushers, either as starting LB, situational DE or LB, etc

whatever fits into coaches defensive plan, which we really don’t know yet beyond basic set of “whatever fits our personnel maybe hybrid 4-3/3-4″.. Know what Knapp will want to do on offense more than what we’ll try to do on defense…unless you can tell us

    backup QB

    Possession / red zone WR

    also could use

TE who is proven red zone threat

    backup FS and special teams

    PR

can’t really give you names of players not on roster who I’m not familiar with, can’t rate them unless I see them. Plenty of rating services who have possibly meaningful opinion, but a GOOD FIT with what coaches want is most important — ratings barely matter beyond top elite guys, anything below that system is more important, need GOOD FITS

Here are some possible scenarios I’d like to see play out:

    Restructure:
DT Tommy Kelly, WR Darrius Heyward-Bey

    FA targets:
    OLB Manny Lawson
ILB/OLB JoLonn Dunbar (or ILB Jonathan Vilma?)
    DE Dave Tollefson
    DT/NT Antonio Garay
    QB Billy Volek
    OG/C Dan Koppen

    3-4 draft:

    3rd (compensatory) – DE/OLB Jake Bequette, Arkansas
    4th (compensatory) – DE/OLB Bruce Irvin, WVU
5th – NT Damon Harrison, William Penn
5th (compensatory) – DB Robert Blanton, Notre Dame
6th – RB Terrance Ganaway, Baylor

    4-3 draft:

3rd (compensatory) – LB Sean Spence, Miami
4th (compensatory) – FS Janzen Jackson, McNeese State
5th – NT Damon Harrison, William Penn
5th (compensatory) – OL Matt Reynolds, BYU
6th – RB Terrance Ganaway, Baylor

There were 2 holes for Grant to choose from. He started in one hole, McClain took one step to that hole, and Grant broke into the other hole. He guessed wrong.
    ===========================================

    =================================================

When you X and O every single time it breaks down to one on one matchups. It is just the way it is. You can say that the interior offensive linemen beat their men, and they may have, but then McClain Has GOT to come in there and make the play. He didn’t. So, it’s going to go. For yardage. When Huff misses, now it’s big yardage. Ooops, sorry, my mistake, SIX!

This is New York where the media and fans are loud and aggressive. One bad game by Sanchez and the city will be all-Tebow, all-the-time. You think the calls for him to start in Denver were strong? If Porter is facing a suspension, that has to weigh on anyone signing him. I’d still like to have him with the suspension, but not if the price is too high.

You give Tim Tebow a package of plays and put him on the field on third-and-2, you don’t think he can be a valuable weapon? Agreed, which is why I think that it was Reggie McKenzie that postponed Porter’s visit to Oakland and not Porter. Reggie is demonstrating that he’s a very deliberate and thorough guy, and I think he wants to see what’s going to happen with Porter before he goes any further. Porter has made other visits, but I don’t think it’s quite as critical with the Raiders that he get in here right away because DA knows him well and Porter knows the Raiders are interested.

How is bringing in Tebow the right thing? Their entire locker room is a loose ship and Rex Ryan is the one that let it get that way. Tebow isn’t going to change the dysfunctional culture in that locker room. That flock won’t follow him, and especially if he’s a part-time gimmick player. In Denver, he had the status and respect that goes with being a starting QB. In New York, he’s a novelty, a sideshow freak. If he tries to change that circus, they’ll laugh him off to the sideline with mock Tebowing gestures. Tebow has no idea how bad it will be.

Dude, he’s a role player. He wasn’t brought in to save the franchise, or even to start. He’s not a “novelty”, or a “sideshow freak”, he’s a football player that has demonstrated the ability to help his team get first downs and touchdowns, and win games when called upon.

If a backup quarterback that can run a few short-yardage and goal-line plays per game is a threat to your team chemistry, then Tim Tebow is not the problem. By ALL accounts, he’s a great and unselfish teammate that works very hard, and contributes when he’s asked to. I thought Tannenbaum was excellent in his PC yesterday; the media made some effort to create an issue and he was very matter-of-fact about Tebow’s role, where he was in the heirarchy, and what to expect.

Maybe you think it’s better to coddle the (in my estimation) very few guys on that team that have a problem with it. Me? I’d rather have the team player and let the management and the coaching staff run the team.

I don’t know for a fact that Sanchez is upset by this. I’ve only heard speculation that he might be, but he to my knowledge hasn’t said anything.

The Jets extended his contract, gave him a boatload more money, and announced to the entire world that he was their starting quarterback. They also told the entire world what Tebow’s role would be. I don’t see how there could be any semblance of confusion there at all, or anything for Sanchez to worry about, if he’s even worried.

As for Cromartie, he should just STFU and play defense and let the people that employ him make the decisions.

-Tafur thinks the Raiders are going to go with Bartell and Spencer as their provisional starting CBs and let Chekwa, Lee and DVD fight it out for their placements on the depth chart. Again, I’m fine with Bartell and Spencer being penciled in, but I hope there’s competition.

Of course management is going to come out and have Sanchez’s back. What is going to happen when Tebow does really well in Tony Sparano’s wildcat? Then the # of plays that are successful as opposed to when Mark is in the game become lopsised? You don’t think that will stir some controversy? Tracy Porter is key man. We really need help with our DBs. We are really weak in the deep thirds of the field.

Mike Bush seems to be one of the best available RBs. If not him than Cedric Benson. Ced is a hard north south runner.

Any LB off the list seems like an upgrade right now.

Not sure if we need a Vet WR and the best ones are off the board. If we could predict the future and Ford was hurt often as last year maybe Ted Ginn but he drops to many balls. We have had enough of the drops and we have DHb to stretch the field. Ted can return punts and kicks though.

There was another recent case of abuse of the “Stand your Ground” law when a Florida man shot and killed a skateboarder who was loitering and using abusive language in the nearby basketball courts. Instead of calling the cops, he took matters into his own hands, then used the “Stand your Ground” law as his defense.
    +++++++++++++

You try and make it sound as if the defense worked….but the truth is that case has not been decided, so you have no idea if that law protected the guy….and you have no idea if that law will protect the Hispanic fellow who shot the young kid either do you?

I suggest letting it all play out in court before condemning the law.

Did you see Sessions tell Kobe to get the hell outta the way as he was coming free from at the left elbow?

Waved him outta there and got the ball to GaSTUD at the elbow who promptly swished it to put the Lakers back up 11. Kept feeding GaSTUD and we extended the lead.

Fisher and Blaker used to do nothing but keep giving the ball to Kobe. How long have I complained about that?

We’re on the right track bruh, and there is NO WAY Sessions isn’t a Laker for long time.

You might be right….about this year. I can live with Buss pinching pennies next year if we can win one this year. Actually, I think the only way Buss brings back Sessions and Barnes next season is if we win a ring and he is forced to try and defent it….otherwise one, or both of them are gone.

Luxuary tax + revenue sharing = Lakers cutting back on talent in the coming years.

It is true… and precisely why charges have not been filed against the shooter yet…both parties were inv in an altercation as evidenced by injuries (broken nose) of the shooter / documented in the police report.

Still the shooter was following the young man when the altercation occurred. Note: shooter is half black and half hispanic with a Jewish last name…would make it less of a white on black type crime than it is being hyped to be in the media.

Shooting is still ridiculous and should have never happened, but likely charges will not be filed per FL’s law and voter ammendments.

  769. Raider O Says:

Did you guys hear the 911 call?

  770. Dakota Says:

Lol, from what I read Barnes’ deal is worth UP TO $2 million….meaning he probably has some incentives in there that gets the contract to $2 million, so there certainly is room there for him to be moved to the bench.

And besides that point, you guys are talking like $2 million is big money or something! lol, come on now. 2 years ago the AVERAGE salary of offensive linemen was $1.267 million….that’s not starters average, but the average of all o-linemen two years ago! Nothing about Barnes’ UP TO $2 million dollar salary means he is going to start.

It will be up to the young guys to take his job away, but they are not at some disadvantage due to Barnes’ paltry $2 million dollar salary.

  771. Raider O Says:

    Dakota,

Why pay an OL $2 million when you lack cap space, if you don’t intend to start him? What you said makes sense in normal situations, but when you spend 20% of your available cap space on one player while you still have other needs is a good indication that he will start. IMO

  772. Dakota Says:

Man, I need to proof read my posts…”defent it”…..say what?

I suck at typing….35 words per minute back in the day…..

  773. Raider O Says:

We could have added another OL for the vets min to compete with the youngsters, and still have enough cap space to sign another player.
We could have signed an OLB who will start for $2 million.

By retaining Barnes, you might eliminate another backup position, because the man can play all the positions on the line except center. If you let Barnes go, you still have to sign other guys to fill in the roster, and unless you go with rookies (we have no picks to speak of) then you are looking at somewhere between $500k and $1 million for veteran minimum players….if you can find any….

Also, who knows how Barnes’ contract is structured? It may have been done in a way that if one of the young guys beats him out, Barnes could be released and a part of the salary might be saved….who knows….Bill Williamson reported that the contract was worth UP TO $2 million, so there might be savings left in there in case the Raiders decide Campbell or Barks won the job.
