Raiders re-sign Barnes

By Steve Corkran
Wednesday, March 21st, 2012 at 10:53 am in Oakland Raiders.

Khalif Barnes has joined Cooper Carlisle as incumbent offensive linemen welcomed back into the fold under new coach Dennis Allen, Barnes told Bay Area News Group on Wednesday.
Barnes re-signed with the Raiders on Wednesday, giving the Raiders the luxury of going with four of the five starters from last year’s team — Jared Veldheer, Stefen Wisniewski, Carlisle and Barnes. Center Samson Satele is the only one who won’t be back.
Barnes, who turns 30 next month, started all 16 games at right offensive tackle last season and played well enough for Allen to want him back for another season.
Barnes has the inside track to keeping the job, though it’s likely that the Raiders will take a long look at youngsters Bruce Campbell and Joseph Barksdale, too.
Barnes is a seven-year pro who has the versatility to play either tackle spot, as well as guard. He spent his first four NFL seasons at left tackle with the Jacksonville Jaguars.

    Is Shaun Rodgers available?

    ————-

Brought that up myself the other day. Word is he’s got real lazy….I say we give him a flyer and see if our strength and conditioning coaches are up to the task. If he can lose like 10 lbs (it’d be great for him and would show us our conditioning team is top notch), he could be useful for a down or 2 a series, and he’d come cheap… If nothing good, cut him…

I could see signing Branch long term because of his age. Seymour doesn’t make tons of sense to me, Unless Big Reg is going to be doing some wheeling and dealing around the draft. If I’m a betting man I’m saying there won’t be any big moves this year.

    *******

Do you see anyone taking him off our hands, especially since we paid him all that up-front bonus money for this year? I don’t see any wheeling and dealing that will move Seymour’s deal. We’re stuck with him imo.
    ============

I think some would probably give up a 2nd or 3rd rounder for him. Would you pull the trigger?

  • JB

Now that Satele is gone, we will need someopne to be able to fil in at Center, just in case. Veldher could do it but I don’t want my starting OLT as the BU-C. Maybe one of the other O-Linemen under contract can take on the task.

LOL, I’m sure the refs will find a way to get 2 penalties accepted at the same time!

    ————————-

I meant back to back penalties in that instance, but if anyone can get two at the same time if they ever made that rule change, Barnes could!

    That is what I mean…

  • YoungAmerican

Dave Tollefson would be a great pickup for the Raiders.

Not so pleased about the Barnes signing, especially with a good young tackle like Anthony Collins on the market. But I guess starting experience and familiarity with the system take priority over potential for where the Raiders are at this point. Barnes might be the second or third best tackle on the market right now – very weak FA group.

when I said wheeling and dealing I was not refering to Sey, No one in there right mind would take him. I was just saying that maybe keeping Seymour would make more sense if Big reg was going to add more significent pieces to the team this year. Then I could understand keeping Seymour because Big Reg truly intended on making this more than a rebuiding year. As I said, I highly doubt that will happen.

The Saints are letting free agent DL Shaun Rogers and Aubrayo Franklin hit the open market.Making $4 million, Rogers was bust in his first season in New Orleans, tallying just 22 tackles and zero sacks. Franklin was even less productive, making 17 tackles in a part-time role. If Rogers is back, it will be at a cheaper price.

In a heartbeat. But the question is since the contracts been restructuted, how much have the Raiders already paid him front loaded this year? Will they be willing to eat that sunk cost or pass it on to the trade partner? I don’t see anyone willing to take on the lion’s share of that $15M, do you?

Rather not get into a bidding war for him.

Preseason 2011, 1st game, 1st quarter, Barnes committed like 3 false starts in 4 plays.

Khalif Barnes 2011 Raiders RT sacks allowed 3.5 for 15.5 yards; penalties 11 false start 6 holds 3 16 games started. Not bad stats
Last year our OL had low sacks & good run blocking but high penalties. Not bad. I think a key was bringing a lot of decent players in to compete best start worst cut.
Khalif less holds than most of our OLs in 2011 sad to say

We say the same thing about Barnes every offseason. And he comes back and sucks every season hes been here. And during every season, we always say how we cant wait until Barnes is gone. Sorry, Ive seen enough of Barnes. Seen him kill enough drives with false starts and holds. He is not going to all of the sudden get better this season. Id rather take my chances on another lineman. We know EXACTLY what we have in Barnes.

    I second that opinion.
The least confortable cut (IMO)on that list would be CJ. I think the groin injuries that were apparent in the Buffalo game and kept him out were not fully healed when he bagan playing again. Add the sister murder and you have a defeated person…
I think CJ was a solid backup, not a dependable starter.

Ok, so I guess the GM agreed with the 3 or 4 of us who said Barnes needs to be brought back if the truly the only other option was Barksdale.
Are people holding Veldheer to the same penalty standards? You do realize he had just as many penalties as Barnes AND they were the holding types instead of simple 5 yard false starts.
