Bush signs with Bears
By Jerry McDonald - NFL Writer
Thursday, March 22nd, 2012 at 9:01 am in Oakland Raiders.
Running back Michael Bush will back up Matt Forte instead of Darren McFadden _ and get a lot more money in the process.
Bush signed a four-year contract worth $14 million, with nearly $7.8 million guaranteed, according to the Chicago Tribune. That represents the figure Bush would have been paid by the Raiders had they decided to franchise him instead of safety Tyvon Branch.
Forte has been franchised by the Bears but wants a long-term deal.
Bush’s departure leaves Taiwan Jones as the backup for McFadden. Both players had injury issues last season.

Hey now, come on, if it was any one of us, and we had been playing on a contract for a 4th round pick, and now suddenly had the chance to secure nearly $8 million dollars, we all would have jumped on that deal. If he had already made a ton of money, then we could give him schyyyt about it, but the dude needed some security, and he knew he would have to settle for a backup position, so he had to take the best deal.
There should be zero animosity towards Michael Bush for taking that deal. There is no way in hell the Raiders could have come close to that.

March 22nd, 2012 at 9:30 am
Free agent RB Jackie Battle visited the Chargers on Tuesday.
GM A.J. Smith indicated on Monday that the team was interested in four running backs to replace Mike Tolbert. With plenty of speed for a big back, yet no semblance of lateral agility, Battle wouldn’t be a threat to Ryan Mathews’ fantasy value if signed. He carries more value as a special teamer.

The versatile Smith should come cheaply enough considering his checkered injury history. The Lions reportedly have visions of a Saints-like backfield with Smith joining Jahvid Best (concussions) and Mikel Leshoure (Achilles).

Got some trust in Reggie, he is taking a logical approach to the roster & cap. Haven’t seen that here in, well, like forever. Don’t know if he’s getting enough for the situation he walked into, but he’s cashing the checks so he better perform – like everyone in S&B. No more scholarships for players, coaches or front office. Those days are gone!
March 22nd, 2012 at 9:42 am
Tomlinson wouldn’t be a bad pickup, but he is somewhat of a McFadden clone…..I would like our backup to be a bruiser who can get the 3rd and 2 yards. Frankly, I think over the past couple of years McFadden should have been that guy, but the staff chose to let Bush try it due to his size….both short yardage and goal line situations, and McFadden was clearly a stronger, more powerful runner than Bush.
I miss Zack Crockett.

1- sign a 40 yo MLB
2- replace a 22 yo who we just drafted in the top 10 two years ago with a 40 yo
3- trade our 22 yo MLB (that we picked in the top 10 to draft another 22 yo rookie.
4- give up on our 22 yo MLB after 2 years.
I’m sorry, but I can’t see the logic behind these moves. Makes no sense to me at all.

The Colts reportedly have “ongoing interest” in free agent OLB Manny Lawson.
The Indy Star’s Phil Richards reports the Raiders, Packers, and Browns are “also involved.” The Cleveland Plain Dealer reported Wednesday that the Browns had no interest, so it sounds like Lawson’s agent is planting seeds in the non-Cleveland media. Lawson would fit nicely in Indianapolis’ hybrid 3-4 defense, playing the Jarret Johnson role as an edge setter versus the run.

Gosh damn; that wasn’t a lot of bread at all. Oh well, he’s only a 5 hour drive away from the crib and his fam in the Ville though, and he’s a big hometown head so good for him.
Appreciate the contributions big Mike! Farewell my dude. Some clowns in here only remember the few bad plays and missed assignments, and neglect to acknowledge how big a piece you were.

Thank God our GM is not any of a number of guys on this blog who wanted to pay Bush $5 million per.
Jay Cutler just left home to help assist Forte with his rehab and recovery. I’m sure he wants no part of Bush out there in pass protection.
March 22nd, 2012 at 10:25 am
I didn’t think Chi overpaid. They are contenders, but they need to upgrade their backup situation at QB and RB. We all watched hat happened when Cutler and Forte got injured.

I can’t believe we didn’t pony up 3.5 mill to the only back that was actually on the field for the majority of the time the past few years. McFadden must’ve ordered two new feet and replaced his toes. If that’s what happened; I’m perfectly fine with letting Bush walk, but damn Big Mack…. I’m with you, but 3.5 mill a year? Chicago or Redskins perfect systems for what Bush does. Reggie is just trying take credit for rebiulding this team he’s making a lot of unnecessary moves. The offense was fine fix the defense. Great GM’s know the best FA are your own. I hope it works out, but Bush will be huge in Chicago.

I miss Zack Crockett too. Maybe Son of Huggy has stayed in shape and wants to slam into 300# men again.
I am not that concerned about Reggie Mack finding a suitable replacement. RB is about as deep a position in young talent as exists on earth. Rookies are capable of coming in and being productive. Just make sure they can pass block/pick up the blitz.

Bush was a very good runner relieving the top guy, and he could catch the ball, but doggone it, when a guy making that much money doesn’t want to block (yes, I believe he doesn’t WANT TO LEARN to block), he limits play calling at inopportune times.
March 22nd, 2012 at 10:44 am
A bruising RB for short yardage is quite easy to find. As a matter of fact, you can find specialist talent very easy. It’s finding a guy that can do it all that is hard. That is why I have no problem letting Bush go and find an ACTUAL short yardage specialist.
March 22nd, 2012 at 10:44 am
There’s probably, what, 100 running backs in the NFL across the 32 teams? I can’t even think of 10 that are truly dynamic, special, game changing forces. I can come up with Arian Foster, DMac, Adrian Peterson, MJD, LeSean McCoy, Ray Rice and Frank Gore. Running backs are easily replaceable. They can be found anywhere. Of that list, only DMac and AP are 1st round picks. MJD, McCoy and Rice are all 2nd rounders, Gore was a 3rd and Foster a friggin’ UDFA.
Look at what happened to Chris Johnson and DeAngelo Williams when they got paid…fell right off a fcking cliff.
Look at where Reggie Mac came from, Green Bay. When was the last time they had a truly elite back? The Horning/Taylor combo of the 60’s? Hell, even back to those 90’s Favre teams…Dorsey Levens was their #1! Dorsey Levens!
Relax about Bush leaving. Success or failure over the next few years comes down almost entirely to Carson Palmer, the protection he receives and the quality of the guys he’s throwing to.
March 22nd, 2012 at 10:45 am
Bush gone? BFD. Can’t block and thinks he’s Napoleon Kaufman. We can get anyone to give us just under 4 ypc.

Watch your back Jay.
You have a RB back there who is not good at protecting his QB and doesn’t like to block.
March 22nd, 2012 at 10:47 am
Of course, the system rewarded him for not learning to block, didn’t it? He obviously had two plans: the first, land a role as a lead back; two, if that fails, land a role as the #2 back, but one that makes more money than as the #2 back with the Raiders.
As long as his deficiencies didn’t stop another team from paying him, he got one of those two choices–so, at least for now in his career, no need to learn to block, no need to occasionally play fullback either.

I like the concept of signing Thomas Jones for a low cap hit, incentive laden deal. I don’t see him getting a better offer in FA right now, with the large list of RBs combined with his 34 years of age. Let’s see what he has left in camp, and then make the call on whether to keep him or not.
The reason he would do well for the Raiders is that he is the prototypical ZBS back. He really flourished with the Jets in that scheme, and then dropped off playing in KCs system. He’s well rounded, can catch and block, and has a good work ethic. Could at the minimum be a great mentor for DMac and T Jones Jr. in the nuances of the ZBS. At least up until DMac’s inevitable pinky toe sprain, he can carry say 5-7 times a game and keep DMac fresh — maybe even postpone that toe injury by a game or two as a result.
March 22nd, 2012 at 10:50 am
That was surprising about Chi this offseason. Their best FA signings so far have been JC & Bush (backup QB & RB). I also like the trade for B Marshall, but they should do something about that OL. Should have signed a G and T IMHO.

The most interesting thing about the Bush signing with the many year deal and the not small price tag, is when you look at it in conjunction with Forte’s situation. Forte wanted that long term deal and instead got hit with the one year franchise tag. I wonder just how much Bush is for the Bears as leverage to get Forte to sign a more friendly long term deal.
In theory, having Bush on board even gives the Bears the option to revoke the tag and let Forte walk in order to save a large chunk of cap. Or maybe convert the tag to Transition hoping that someone signs him at that lower price. That would then give the Bears some good 2013 draft picks and in effect make it a decent trade for them.
It makes me wonder if that was part of the conversation with Bush, where they said he’s the likely starter next year and possibly even this year depending on negotiations with Forte.

the Bears learned the lesson of how important roster depth is…
they started last season 7-3 with their only losses to the offensive juggernauts (Saints, Packers & Lions) with a healthy Cutler & Forte.
then had 5 straight losses without them. barely squeaked out a WK17 win over Minny (without Adrian Peterson) because Charles Tillman had a pick-six on Joe Webb!
Jason Campbell & Michael Bush were overpaid as a result of this. oh well
Depth is just as important to the Oakland Raiders imo
Can you imagine what the offense would look like without Carson Palmer & Darren McFadden this year?
yikes !!

I think people let Bush’s size confuse them into thinking he is a “power” back. Hes not. Never was. He is a finesse back. DMAC is more of a “power” back than Bush has ever been. DMAC hits the hole and defenders the way Bush should. But Bush only put on the extra weight after breaking his leg. He was always a dancing, wait for the hole type of RB, even at Louisville. Go back and watch. Now, hes big enough that if he is taking on someone smaller than him, he will be able to run them over, but every Raider fan here knows Bush has never been a bruiser. Ever. We can find another RB in the draft, that wont cost close to what Bush got.

—
That’s drinking a bit too much silver and black koolaid. Neither have MASSIVE potential, which is why neither went high in the first round, let alone in the second. Hell, every team in NFL passed twice on Pryor, and some thrice, even at the reduced rate of a next season’s draft pick (worth roughly one round lower than current year value) in the supplementary draft. Jones was a 4th rounder as well.
Pryor is an athletic project that will never amount to squat as an NFL QB, but might have an outside chance at learning a position that utilizes his rare size/speed combination. Jones is best suited as a change of pace/3rd down back type, that as best is a great complement to a stud every down back.
Put another way, what is their relative value in trade? If Tebow, who at least has some NFL proof that he miraculously pulls wins out of his butt, only fetched a 4th rounder when there were multiple bidders, what is Pryor worth? Maybe a 6th? For Jones, when you look at the long list of more proven talent on the FA market, and similar types of runners (Moore, Ward) I don’t see him fetching more than 4th, if not lower.
None of this is to say that I don’t want them to succeed, but we have to be a bit realistic here.
March 22nd, 2012 at 11:17 am
Maybe we should go after Ronnie Brown. I dont know how he did last year because I avoided watching eagle games last year! But I remember he was a baller in Miami. He is a Free-agent now. The Raiders have 4 more holes to fill. We need a starting OLB, a pass rushing DE/OLB, a backup QB, & backup RB/ Short yardage specialist. It would be good to get one more CB that can compete for a starting spot.

Go back and watch. Now, hes big enough that if he is taking on someone smaller than him, he will be able to run them over, but every Raider fan here knows Bush has never been a bruiser. Ever. We can find another RB in the draft, that wont cost close to what Bush got.
*******
Good Stuff….agree…..this is all we need to know about Bush

@PA
thats true – the zbs is VERY rb friendly!!
+++++++++++++++++++++++
Exactly. Look how many mediocre RBs Shanarat made into 1000 yard rushers!
=======
Well, sort of. The ZBS doesn’t automatically make an average RB a stud. What it does do is allow RBs that aren’t necessarily great fits in other systems to use different skills. When those skills are a good fit for the ZBS, success! Arian Foster may be the world’s greatest example of this. Undrafted based on his lack of traditional skills, but in a ZBS with excellent OL execution, the guy is a world beater.
The main skills needed for the ZBS are patience, ability to quickly read the emerging holes, and then the burst to get through them quickly. Bush has the first two but lacks the burst that can turn a 3 yard gain into 40. DMac is learning the patience part, but over time, could be one of the greats with his burst, breakaway speed and his desire to stick his hat into the first defender.
For me, the biggest asset is Reggie’s ability to detect and value this special skill set, given that GB has run the ZBS for years. If he can find those Foster type RBs off of the discard pile, then we could might be somewhat surprised by who emerges as the backup to DMac in camp. It could very well be some low round pick or even a undrafted FA signing.
March 22nd, 2012 at 11:32 am

Taiwan and Pryor do have all-pro potential.
Taiwan has acceleration, speed, moves, and quickness.
Pryor was the best college prospect in the nation, he dominated the big ten, if not for off the field minor issues (only with ncaa, NFL non issue) he would have been a First round draft choice this year.

JC handed off to Bush for most the second half and he grinded out 4-5 yards a carry and just hammered the Chargers defense. I remember sitting there thinking just keep feeding the Bush…. It was his best game as a pro…. No question….

Living here in Spokane and being a student at EWU, I can say that Taiwan is a gifted runner. He has Chris Johnson type cuts and is just as fast if not faster. He does put the ball on the ground, but that can be corrected hopefully. I will say he is a hard worker. I had a African history class with him and he really applied himself to get past his learning disorder. He is no chump.

March 22nd, 2012 at 11:52 am
I hope Reggie has Plan B ready with the RB’s since DMAC will go out soon with another foot injury and Taiwan Jones is almost completely untested, then when he was tested looking too skinny, not good, then injured quickly.
March 22nd, 2012 at 11:53 am
Yeah, I looked at Taylor’s numbers. Nevermind.
March 22nd, 2012 at 11:54 am
TaiJones does have All-Pro potential. He’s as athletic as any guy on the Team…he’s just not very big. And, the point’s been made more than once…he hasn’t seen the field enough for us to know squat about him. The scary part of that isn’t his lack of experience…it’s how he’s missed time already. He seems to be a nick & ding factory. We already have that in our #1 RB.
March 22nd, 2012 at 11:54 am

The biggest problem I saw with McF his first two years was the combination of indecisiveness, and a too upright of running style, which led to too many ankle tackles.
March 22nd, 2012 at 11:56 am
DMAC looks great against lower tier, non-championship calibre teams with losing records, while his performance against higher tier, championship calibre teams with winning records has been mediocre, at best.
Then there is the problem of serial foot injuries which severely limited his playing time.
March 22nd, 2012 at 11:58 am
Yep , DMac is running over tacklers now…. That wasn’t the case the first couple yrs …
March 22nd, 2012 at 11:59 am
Every player on every NFL roster has All-Pro potential. Some, more than others. But to count on any of those players, particularly those not drafted as sure thing first round picks, to actually become All-Pro is definitely a case of putting all of your eggs in one basket.
Jones, based on statistics alone, has a slim chance of even becoming NFL starter caliber. This is based on the valuation of all 32 teams that determined he wasn’t worth even a 3rd round pick. Doesn’t make him any less quick. It just means that the assets he showed don’t project to All-Pro by those standards.
The point here is that Jones is not the safe answer as the backup RB unless he’s done some amazing things in last season’s camp that the new crew is privy to. I’d be shocked if Reggie doesn’t go out and get a more clear cut 2nd string RB to replace Bush and then let Jones try to beat him out in camp for that role.

Trade DMC straight-up for Forte, then pay the man (Chicago doesn’t want to pay him, and we’re going to face the same kind of contract dilemma with DMC in a year).

Agreed on your agreement
Look at college tape on DMac. He was running through holes the size of elephants. Didn’t take much of a read of tough decisionn; just run through the hole as fast as you can and then outrun the slower college DBs. The NFL was probably quite a surprise for him to find that the holes were tiny and that even the LBs had closing speed if you give them half a chance.
Under Hue, he learned how to run after contact. This was the one thing I thought he’d never do, and it’s the one reason why he moved to elite back status. At the same time, this new hard nosed style might not be a great fit for his body type, and contributes to his injuries. I think he needs to learn to be a little more selective around when to run through a defender and when to juke around them.
The reading holes is something that experience helps with. He’s making clear strides each season here. He’s clearly a pretty smart guy if you hear him interviewed, so he’s got the mental faculties to continue to improve in this area.

The Associated Press reports the Jets are now trying to trade QB Drew Stanton after acquiring Tim Tebow from the Broncos.
Stanton just a signed a reasonable one-year, $1.25 million deal. The Jets have to hope that a team in need of a quality backup, such as the Rams, Raiders or Packers prefers Stanton to the mediocre veteran options still available. The best they can hope for is a late-round pick.

DMAC trained with a group out of Scottsdale or somehwere in the Valley of the Scumbag, AZ that offseason and himself gave those guys a ton of credit for changing both his style and taking his conditioning to another level. Small point but since we are here debating whether to spend $8mil guaranteed on a BU RB or just find one cheaper somewhere else the minutia seemed acceptable….

If McFadden would play 16 games+ for the Raiders he would be the most beloved Raider since TimmyB. He’s crazy good, hits like a truck, races to endzone like a Ferrari. But dude is kinda frail, no?

DMAC,
Yes I remember the Jets game very well last year where DMAC had his best game ever @ 171 yds from scrimmage. However, as it turned out, the Jets tanked last season, had a horrendous defense, and were essentially in the cellar in the AFC east. At the end of last season the Jets were in complete disarray.
My point is DMAC performed fantastically against the Jets, who, last season were a lower tier team, non-playoff bound.
The following week after the Jets, DMAC gained 75 yds on the ground against the Patriots and the following week 51 yds against the Texans, which was average.
Again I like DMAC, I just need to see him play an entire season, with good and bad teams alike.

Lonyea Miller RB, 5′11″ 220
(now under Raider contract)
Fresno State: A special back who is coming off his best season … an explosive player who had two runs of 80 yards or more and another of 69 yards last season … an every down back with both power and speed …ranks 13th among active NCAA players for highest yards per carry average (5.58) in a career … has played in 32 games and scored 16 touchdowns in his career. (2008) Slowed by nagging injuries and missed the La Tech game but still managed to rush for more than 800 yards and averaged 6.8 yards per carry and 68th in the NCAA in rushing averaging… ranked fourth in the WAC … his 6.8 per carry average ranked third-best in the WAC … scored five touchdowns … had back-to-back games rushed for 161 yards and two touchdowns against Hawaii, including a 90-yard run, the second-longest run in the NCAA … he followed that with 181 yards and an 80-yard touchdown against Idaho … had just six carries but had 60 yards and a touchdown vs. Nevada … had 13 carries for 113 yards and two touchdowns, including a 69-yard run vs. Colorado State in the New Mexico Bowl … was clocked by Bulldog coaches at a 3.97 flying 40-yard dash in a game. (2007) Started eight games and played in 10 … was third on the team with 609 yards and averaged 4.6 yards per carry … ran for seven touchdowns, second most on the team … had a 72-yard touchdown run, longest rush by a Bulldog during the season … had two receptions for 23 yards. (2006) Played in 10 games, primarily as the No. 2 option behind Dwayne Wright … averaged 5.3 yards per carry and was the second leading rusher on the team with 287 yards … scored two touchdowns … led the team against Hawaii with 16 carries for 113 yards and a touchdown … had nine carries for 56 yards and a touchdown in a win over Idaho.
This may be our MBush replacement.

LT2, Franco, and Terrell are on the list as well, but I can’t put them on there as a Raider, “can’t do it.”

In fact Forte goes in the Chuck Foreman category.

You don’t seem to have a clue. MBush was not all that tough. He can’t/won’t block, has no hitting power at the LOS & can’t get to the edge on a run (too slow). Quite frankly, he’s not going to be all that hard to replace. He’s a twinkle toes at the LOS when he should be a banger. I used to be a big MBush fan but after his last 5 games he’s been exposed as a very ordinary RB – at best!

Suspicious ending? Lisfranc injury….Ford said it was WAY worse than his own, which cost Ford a bunch of games….potential career ending injury if not properly taken care of….franchise that chose to sit on the true extent of the injury in order to keep ticket sales up, leaving the player to get heat week in and week out, instead of just admitting the severity of the injury….as the Texans did with Schaub.

Running backs dont matter in this league. Who were the RB’s in the SB?
the law firm
Brandon Jacobs
I mean,we are not in the position to have paid Bush that type of jack anyways. We still need a mean ass LB, a NT, another Tackle.
Our offense will be Better because of Carson and his time with the offense. Even if Dmac goes down, as long as our O line is sold, it’s a running back by committee league anyways.
Carson will be better, the defense will be better. That is ALL that matters!

He’s not what I would call frail. The injuries he’s had are pretty typical for every down backs. But what he is not is a fast healer. If anything, he’s a very slow healer. What most guys come back from after missing a game, it seems to take DMac either several games or a whole offseason to fully recover.
I don’t know if that’s genes, low tolerance to pain, lack of mental toughness, or just advice from his agent to not take risks this early in his career. It’s probably some combo.

Offensive coordinators are ONLY as good as their players. Ar we really going to judge Knapp based on his time in Oakland??
This will be the best offense and QB has ever worked with.
Carson, the O-Line, and the WR’s are the strength of this team, period.

Bear in mind that the offense last season was designed for check-down Campbell. It was built for a strong running game (somewhat tailored to DMac’s strenghts) and a game manager under center. When Palmer came in DMac went down in the mid-season, it was way too late to do anything more than tweak it around a QB with a superior passing ability and more of a move the chains running attack than a constant homerun threat.
Who’s to say that Knapp doesn’t build something similar to Houston’s offense that was a top 5 or 6 passing attack when Schaub and Johnson were healthy? If he builds something around Palmer’s ability and the speedy young WRs, I think we’ll see more of a mid-range based passing attack, that mixes in long balls and a whole lot of running the ball to keep the defenses guessing.
March 22nd, 2012 at 2:03 pm

…The Bears and Forte have been publicly negotiating a potential long-term deal for more than a year. It’s now hard to see Forte getting the deal he wants. Forte hinted earlier this year that he might skip offseason activities if the Bears were to place the franchise tag on him, which they recently did. With Bush now in town, the Bears can afford to be patient.
Forte, unsurprisingly, isn’t happy.
This is going to get worse before it gets better. Forte and the Bears figure to be the ugliest player-team battle of this offseason, which is a shame because Forte has always been a team-first player.
Chicago’s handling of Forte may not be fair, but it’s good business. The Bears are essentially telling Forte that they are happy to pay him on a year-to-year basis. Forte can hold out all he wants this offseason, but he eventually has to show up to get paid.
The Bears could retain Forte again with a more expensive franchise tag next season. Entering the 2014 season, Forte will be 28 years old and have a lot of mileage on his legs.
This is the state of running backs in the NFL. Teams don’t want to pay them big money, and they can get away with avoiding it.
Forte has to decide whether he’s willing to operate on a year-to-year basis or take a long-term deal that he would likely believe to be below market value. By signing Bush, the Bears have limited Forte’s options.

Vegas always gets A+ for conviction, but in this case, a C- for information.
We ran a mix in 2010 as well. And in 2011, when more power was being used, McFadden had the best start of his career.
You’ll also recall in 2010 he was completely shut down in a few games, including Miami and Pittsburgh.
In summation, we shouldn’t dump one style for the other.
I’ve seen McFadden explode in both (check out his 2nd career game in KC and the 2010 Denver game).
Point is, McFadden’s a good runner. Wouldn’t get too hung up on system. His injuries are his biggest obstacle.
Plus, the Raider that was best suited for pure ZBS actually just signed with the Bears.

Again with this Moneyball thing.
We have the highest paid DT, K, P, Safety in the league, and one of the highest paid RB, QB, LG (new guy) and MLB in the league.
There is nothing Moneyball about this team. We have overpaid guys, not underpaid ones.
=========
Where the FK are they getting this moneyball BS from?
Reggie had to get fix some of those dumb ass contacts.
March 22nd, 2012 at 2:19 pm
LA,
All I am saying is that you get people who think McFadden ONLY excelled when we ran power-blocking and ONLY failed when we were in ZBS.
Completely not true.
March 22nd, 2012 at 2:20 pm
They’ll tailor the offense around their playmakers. Staff knows there’s a commitment to Palmer for at least this year and next and they have up-and-coming speedsters in Ford and Moore and a potential possession receiver in DHB to move chains and make tough catches within windows inside zones.
In terms of RBs and running style, they have one of the best in the business and the style they will employ makes it such that they can plug in another guy that doesn’t have to be a superstar if DMC gets injured or needs a breather.
March 22nd, 2012 at 2:22 pm
Robert Turbin (Utah) in the 5th round or Darell Scott (SFU)…
There’s your answer to “three yards and a cloud of dust”.
Moreover, if we are going WCO, running backs may see a dramitc increase in the passing game and a drop in rushing attempts.
just saying…

If McFadden would play 16 games+ for the Raiders he would be the most beloved Raider since TimmyB. He’s crazy good, hits like a truck, races to endzone like a Ferrari. But dude is kinda frail, no?
===
*************************
The one important thing you missed is that all of his injuries have not been repeat injuries to the same part of his body. That’s a good thing in that he doesn’t have a weak link to his frame. Most of his injuries have been associated with 110% effort on his part while anding out some pain to the opponents. I’d feel worse about his injuries if it was always the same thing (i.e. a toe, a foot, a shoulder, etc.). I don’t think he’s as frail as some others on here think. Hopefully he’s been learning how to deal out some punishment without hurting himself. He should be 100% healthy for this new season. A healthy DMac is a dangerous DMac and now he’ll be even more dangerous because the O-line should be substantially better than last year.

————–
Oh, absolutely. DMC failed when unhealthy. Bottom line. I know Hue called some plays for him he liked to run and it was pretty succesful. Don’t see any reason Knapp wouldn’t do the same.
People shouldn’t sweat the O, IMO. DMC will be fine if healthy, regardless of system.
Rather than trying to get all the guys on O to fit inside a little box, I think they’ll build the box around those guys, if that makes sense.
March 22nd, 2012 at 2:26 pm
McFadden needs to be utilized in goal line situations, and his pass catching ability MUST be taken advantage of with more screens and RB wheel routs.
I know he is a good blocker, but we have to find a way to use him in the passing game instead of wasting his talents on blocking.
March 22nd, 2012 at 2:28 pm
Lowdown,
I think we will pass less actually.
Hue got way pass happy after DMC went down and Palmer came in.
The template for success should be the SD TNF game, IMO. Palmer makes smart plays and passes no more than 25-30 times per game, depending on circumstances maybe more, maybe less.
And for those of you saying we’re not going to miss Bush? We will. We’ll move on and maybe plug in a guy who can pick up the slack, but we will miss Bush.
March 22nd, 2012 at 2:28 pm
Not too many LBers or safeties in the NFL can match up on McFadden on a wheel rout….just sayin’….

Dakota, why McFadden hasn’t been used more at receiver, out of backfield and on the LOS, I have no Idea.
Vegas had Hue pegged early.
Definitely got our O over the hump. Respectable certainly and at times dangerous — downright deadly.
But huge lapses. Chucking it 40+ times with Carson? Going whole games without anything to Reece? Ignoring our TEs?
I don’t want the most explosive O in the league, I want the smartest.

I totally agree. Hue’s offense was a times explosive, and at other times left you scratching your head. I hope Knapp can do a better job and sustaining a consistently good offense. We shall see. I am not judging Knapp on his previous term here as he didn’t really get much of a chance to call plays….and he didn’t call plays in Houston….so you have to look at his Falcons days, and that is even an unknown because he had Vick at QB, which changes the way any OC would call a game.
Just not an exciting hire by any stretch of the imagination….hope he can handle it.
March 22nd, 2012 at 2:37 pm
LA,
I’d prefer your run attack formula any day. Have no clue what Hue was doing in those games.
We will miss Bush. No doubt, dude was a smooth rumbling beast.
Before Bush, the less than dominant LaMont Jordan and Dominic Rhodes were stinkin up the joint.
It’d be a longshot to simply say we can “plug & play” the next player and expect him to perform at the same level.
Make no mistake though, we will plug and play the next man up.

Vittorio Tafur @VittorioTafur
Re Wisniewski, McKenzie said he’s moving to center (w/ Carlisle @ LG, Brisiel @ RG) but that could change if they find C they can’t pass up
Also, McKenzie said getting a backup QB now, just like adding a backup RB now, is “low priority”. He’s not worried about it
If they need more money, Reggie said they could always restructure/redo deals, mentioned Tyvon Branch
Ideally, it wouldn’t come to that and McKenzie would get a OLB in late free agency or in draft
McKenzie confident enough in his scouting abilities that he thinks he could find a potential starting LB in undrafted rookie after draft …
McKenzie: “I need to find a starting outside linebacker. Other than that, we could field a team and compete right now”
McKenzie also knew no shot at re-signing Mike Bush; he is very confident they can find another RB in late free agency or draft
McKenzie: “If we kept Wimbley we wouldn’t have been able to sign all the guys we did”
26m Vittorio Tafur Vittorio Tafur @VittorioTafur
McKenzie said he really liked LB Kam Wimbley but knew right off the Raiders couldn’t afford to keep him …
28m Vittorio Tafur Vittorio Tafur @VittorioTafur
McKenzie: “We solidified our offensive line and cornerback situation.” When 49ers waived CB Spencer, Raiders knew they wanted him
GM Reggie McKenzie said #Raiders have “less” than $4 mil in cap space, and pleased with how offseason has gone thus far
March 22nd, 2012 at 3:00 pm
I seem to be the only Raider fan to think that Bush got a bum deal, and if that is what it was going to take to re sign him the Raiders should have pulled the trigger. Yeah he is 29, but 3.5 mill a year for a player who is capable of running for 1,200+ yards, 10 + Tds a season is a bargain. I think we F$%^KD up letting him walk. Hell a lot of us were thinking the Franchise was the way to go with him this of season.

Look at the way the Packers have been built:
Donald Drive, their best receiver for the past 10 years: 7th rounder
Scott Wells: starting Center: 7th rounder
Aaron Rodgers: After thought. They didn’t want him, didn’t need him, but he was too good to pass up at that point.
Tramon Williams: starting corner, undrafted.
In fact AJ Hawk, one of their lst rounders has been one of the guys that has been the biggest disappointment.
Bottom line: Reggie McKenzie has done a very very good job of recognizing talent, especially in later rounds or not drafted at all. After the Randy Moss, Jivin’ Walker, Lamont Jordan, Kerry Collins, signings, GOOD, GO CHEAP!!

I don’t know about seymore anymore, seemed like he gave up at times, or maybe let his emotions get the best of him. When he twisted that RBs facemask after he was already down…
I don’t mind having him on the team, I just don’t think he is worth 7.5 million guaranteed next year. Also I hope that the defense plays him sparingly until the final stretch, seemed like he broke-down toward the end of the season

DHB is going right down the toilet. It’s true he made receptions amounting to almost 1000 yds. However, he only scored 3 TD’s. He was an AD scholarship project and force fed the ball per AD’s explicit orders. Then when AD passed Ford and Moore went down, Hue cut Hagan, resulting in more force feeding of DHB. DHB dropped many balls in critical situations and afterwards sat smiling on the sidelines.
DHB can only catch the ball by trapping in his chest with his forearms. He lacks ability to position his body and leverage out opponent CB’s and also lacks body knowledge in order to consistently catch the long ball.
DHB will be overshadowed by Ford and Moore and most likely be released when his contract expires.
Also if you are wondering what real greatness is look at Jerry Rice who gained 1061 yds and 23 TD’s in his 3rd season. Compare those stats to DHB.

Macho Man,
DHB’s production will hinge on two things:
1) Does he win a starting spot with the new regime.
2) Does Knapp have the wherewithal and flexibility to dial up plays that accentuate DHB’s strengths as Hue did in 2011, or will he force the kid to fit the plays he wants to call.
March 22nd, 2012 at 4:12 pm
Yeah right, a first and a fifth for McFadden? If only.
March 22nd, 2012 at 4:12 pm
You would think if DHB was being forcefed…
defenses smarter than you would see it to and shut him down.
Yet he continued to produce.
U r not bright.

We have such even and above-average talent at the WR position, we might have none of our WRs break 1,000 yards, yet Moore, DHB, and Ford might all have 700+, despite DMAC also racking up receiving yards by the boatloads.
It’s a talented offense.

Also, McKenzie said getting a backup QB now, just like adding a backup RB now, is “low priority”. He’s not worried about it

Seymour was a monster before he got hurt. He had I believe 5 sacks and was averaging 4.5 tackles per game through the first 5 games. Surreal numbers for a DT. Then, as you may remember, he basically couldn’t practice for awhile because he was too banged up.Production fell way off. Came back some the last couple of weeks.
If the guy stays healthy he’s still capable of great things.

Of course DHB was force fed. He is a mediocre talent; why else would he get so many passes and only score 3 TD’s?
Common sense and logic can be used to intrepret the situation.

Ugh, sorry for that way outdated link above. Mah bad!
March 22nd, 2012 at 4:21 pm
Nobody is arguing that he’s a super talent.
Force-fed is what the Raiders did to Jacoby Ford in the first Denver game, and the results were disasters.
Defenses roll coverages if you’re force-fed, and limit you unless you’re a superstar. If the Raiders were force-feeding DHB, and he STILL was open enough on down-the-field routes, he obviously is doing something well.
Star? No. Above-average? Yeah.

Exactly. I would think this is where Saunders expertise and experience will be needed with him sitting upstairs in the coaches booth seeing where defenses can be attacked by certain plays, like he did last year.
March 22nd, 2012 at 4:23 pm
Hey. DHB has improved every year. is he in Megatron and Andre Johnson´s league? hell no. but 1000 yds in this day and age?… last year 19 guys caught 1000 plus, DHB ranked 20th

Raiders GM Reggie McKenzie confirmed that Stefen Wisniewski is slated for a move to center this season.
Veteran Cooper Carlisle is expected to move to left guard with newcomer Mike Brisiel slotting in at right guard. Wisniewski was rated by most analysts as the top center in last year’s draft; the transition should be smooth.

So it looks like we’re done with the O-line…now let’s concentrate on our D!
Starting with our LB group and D-line!

We still need a pass rusher and some LB’s.

We need a strong pyscial RDE who has the speed to get to the passer and hold the edge and at least 1 vet OLB and another potential diamond in the rough OLB in the 3rd or 4th round of the draft.
We also need a a legit NT.

Guys, I hear ya but still don’t feel ya…..
As much as DHB has been tutored he still lacks the skills to catch the ball with his hands. DHB can never be great until he can catch with his hands. I have never seen any receiver whose signature trait was trapping the ball on his chest, which is a taboo in the receiving world.
Unlike Cruz and Manningham in the last Superbowl, who made great catches of balls that were in essence thrown out of bounds, by great hand work, DHB will never do so by trapping the ball in his chest. Physically it’s impossible.
DHB does catch a lot of balls, but where are the TD’s?
Anyway, let’s just see how it shakes out this upcoming season. Reggie and Allen will distinguish the have’s from the have not’s, talent and performance wise, thanks to the absence of AD.
I will go with their judgment.

If this guy Miller is under contract with the Raiders, then where has he been ?
*********************
He was signed on January 3, 2012
******************
he was on the practice squad late last year, then re-signed to “future” contract 1/3/12.
Same as other guys from practice squad they want to retain, as well as other free agent 1st year players (players with 0 games active roster in NFL, but not rookies coming out of college)
Marks’ Hair (see top) indicated in posts a few days ago that he’d actually watched Miller play quite a bit at Fresno State, so his opinion holds weight IMO. He did say that Miller, now 230, is heavier now than in college
the Marks’ Hair’s info and the “scouting report” in previous posts seemed consistent with each other and descriptive of a RB who should fit well with ZBS + gd TD total in college, maybe good goalline/short yardage runner . To bank on a reserve/future player to fill a spot at this time is premature, but allegedly the Raiders expect him to be very competive for a roster spot. I’m sure they’ll bring in more competition. Its only March. See new article posted, interview with Reggie Mac

Sounds good to me. Just have to coach em up and let him know NOW to prepare to play the RDE spot and do some stand up rushing work from OLB in 3-4 alignments.
Lets hope Shauny isn’t a steady smoker either.
