Allen on `Bountygate,’ Raider defense

By Jerry McDonald - NFL Writer
Monday, March 26th, 2012 at 8:44 pm in Oakland Raiders.

An excerpt from Raiders coach Dennis Allen at the NFL meetings on Sirius XM NFL radio discussing his former employer, the Saints, and their penalties for bounties, and the potential of his Oakland defense:

Q: With your former team in the news, and former boss (Sean Payton) and defensive coordinator (Gregg Williams), what light if any can you shed on this and what have been people talking about in terms of bounties and what’s going on with the Saints and the severe penalties they face?

Allen: I think first and foremost, I think we gotta undersand that our job as employees of the NFL is to protect the integrity of the game. I think commissioner Goodell made that clearly obvious when he addressed the whole group this morning. I think that’s been something that’s been critical. Player safety, obviously, is at the forefront of the NFL. In general, I feel badly for everybody that’s been involved with the whole situation. It’s kind of an unfortunate situation, but the commissioner has made it clear that those type of practices are not acceptable and I support his decisions and what he decided to do from a punishment standpoint.

Q: Physical play prevalent in all game plans, who do you address that with your team without crossing the line?

Allen: I think you have to always be forthright with your team and be kind of one step ahead of everything. I think you can play this game in a physical manner without the intent to injure and I think that’s really at the end of the day what the NFL is trying to accomplish.

Q: Talk about personnel that you’re inheriting and how much talent is there, if guys can fit in and can you take advantage of their skills?

Allen: I think we’ve got some key players in place. Obviously, up front, we’ve got a pretty good group of guys up front where we can get after the passer and are still pretty stout against the run up front, from a linebacker standpoint. Rolando McClain was a first round draft choice and I’m looking forward to the opportunity of getting to work with him and he’s been real receptive to what we’re planning on doing. Obviously, Aaron Curry, it was good to get him back, we’ve got to find a way to replace Kamerion Wimbley. I think from a secondary standpoint, with Michael Huff and Tyvon Branch, I feel real good about that position. Corner was a position we had to make sure we had to upgrade. I think we did a nice job of that, Shawntae Spencer and obviously Ron Bartell. We’re excited about who we have back there and we’re looking forward to continuing throughout the free agency process and throughout the draft and seeing if we can acaquire some more players.

DIRT LOT and Fingers for induction to honorary Raider Blog HOF? what say you all?

    I say yes.

My greatest Raider ‘live’ moment was watching Jim Plunkett defeat the Houston Oilers in Dec 79 at the Oakland Alameda Coliseum on their way to SBIV. Beat them down 27-7 that day.

    I am humbled.

Here’s a name that could be had in the 4th to 6th round that you guys are gonna get sick of hearing me repeat for the next month: Danny Trevathan, OLB from Kentucky.

John Booty said, and I agree, that he was the best OLB in the SEC last year and that covers some big time schools and big time players. He’s flying under the radar. Some team, and I hope it’s the Raiders, are going to get a steal.

Always a wise strategy. Drafting for need is okay in the 1st round, where you’re hoping to get that immediate impact player. Other than that? BPA, BPA, BPA.

I still think Reggie could be doing more to bring in quality vets to keep this team competitive. If it’s true of the ‘salary cap myth’, he should be restructuring and signing Branch long term. It’s a two year window to get out of cap hell.

Reggie Mac can do more if he wanted to. I hope he succeeds, but I am critical of him being too conservative. We still have to field a competitive team and we have some holes that aren’t solvable through only the draft.

Yep. Put up or shut up time. They pretty clearly see potential there enough to give him another go, but I really think he only gets this season to prove he should be a Raider from 2013 and beyond.

I remember Lester Hayes had a great day….guess it was ’80. Didn’t Lester have a pick 6 that day? I thought it was Dan Pastorini who was the enemy. The defense shut down Earl Campbell. I was like 14 yo back then. Houston fans sitting in front of me cheering on the team in white. My uncle took me to the game, said “good guys wear black”.

uhhh, I don’t see where Dennis Allen says ROMAC is talented. nothing about being stout versus the run or fierce in coverage. no lofty expectations. nothing about skill or work ethic. nothing about leadership or the ability to shed blocks.

Can some of you semi pro’s read between the lines here and make me feel better about our MLB play next season?

If our D-Line is “pretty stout against the run” as Allen describes it, why were we TERRIBLE at defending it?

are we still blaming Michael Huff? LOL!!!

I agree. Peyton relies on timing of his skill position and communications during the snap count. He’s working with young unproven guys who never had to work to be so precise as Peyton is going to demand.

And what do we know of Peyton’s live arm strength anymore? He’s going to be so overhyped and anything less than Peyton vinatage ’95/96 will be a huge failure.

Honestly RRS, when I read between the lines of what DA is saying, this is what I see:

“These players have been laboring under an outdated scheme and sch!t coaching for years. I can fix that.”
