Raiders get picks in 3rd, 4th, 5th rounds

By Jerry McDonald - NFL Writer
Monday, March 26th, 2012 at 1:25 pm in Oakland Raiders.

The Raiders significantly added to their draft Monday with the announcement at the NFL owner’s meetings they would receiver compensatory selections in the third, fourth and fifth rounds.

Oakland’s picks, as announced on its Twitter account, are No. 95, No 129 and No. 168 overall.

The Raiders had picks in only the fifth and sixth rounds before compensatory picks were announced.

Compensatory picks come at the end of the round around and cannot be traded, not that general manager Reggie McKenzie is going to be doing much dealing with such a limited draft.

Burfict = slow, questionable instincts, runs around blocks instead of shedding them, not very good in coverage, character concerns.

So basically, he’s the embodiment of all the weaknesses the Raiders LB corps had last season.

Q: Looking to add another quarterback behind Palmer, Pryor . .

McKenzie: Kind of the same as like running back for us, make sure you bring a legitimate guy in.

(For reference, here’s the answer to the RB question)

Q: Is running back a position you feel good about being able to find someone, either through draft, a released player, drafted free agent . . .

McKenzie: Absolutely. I’m OK with being able find a guy. Some guys get released that can step in and play. A lot of those situations happen.

  3. RaiderDuck Says:

If Al were still here, we’d be taking Burfict in the third.

Not so much with Reggie Mac.

    Outstanding!

    3rd, 4th and 5th picks???

We usually do pretty well in the middle rounds. Don’t expect that to change.

    So 3rd, 4th and 5th, huh?…who will fall to us at 95?

    ——————–

My money is on Sean Spence.

A few other possibilities are DE/OLB Jake Bequette, NT Josh Chapman, and CB Leonard Johnson.

  6. DKnight007 Says:

    Yep yep!

Told ya we should get a 4th and 5th for sure along with the given of getting a 3rd!

This was the best possible scenario of comp picks we could get IMO!!

I really hope Bobby Wagner from Utah State is there. Raiders have interviewed him a couple of times, I think; once at the Senior Bowl and again at the combine.

    Could be a good one!

Wagner would be great. I think he’ll be gone at the beginning of Round 2, but who knows.

    Burfict:

“His utter lack of discipline is a major concern for scouts; draws too many personal foul flags for late hits and constantly talks with officials and opponents. Has reportedly matured during over the past year, becoming a vocal leader on the field and in the locker room. Stamina could be improved.”

  12. RaidO Says:

Raiders have around $2 million in cap space. A 3rd Rd salary is around $550,000 $700,000 year. They have more than a few needs. It will be tight.

    interesting, YA

Looking at the Raiders roster I would guess we’ll draft

    2 LB’s
    1 DB
    1 OL
    1 DL

that could change at any moment if the Raiders sign or re-sign somebody in the next 3+ weeks

  30. RaidO Says:

Raiders Cap is around $2 million:

    Low range,

    3Rd pick salary= about 600,000 year
    4th = $550,000
    5th = $470,000
    6th =$450,000

    = $2,075,000

Reggie has a lot of work to do.
It may just be draft picks now and really low range FA’s

I agree. McKenzie has said he wants a “legitimate guy” to be the backup running back. I think that means he wants someone that’s played in the league for a little while, and that knows how to run routes and block.

Doesn’t sound to me like he’s looking for a rookie to fill that role.

  48. Just Fire Baby Says:

According to a NFL.com article, comp picks factor in salary of players that left the most..

Tough to say. I mean we cut Wimb, Routt and Boss. They were not unrestricted FA’s until we cut them, so I don’t know how the rule applies in that situation.

Burfict is going to work out for NFL teams again next week, but he’s been out of shape and thoroughly underwhelming throughout the pre-draft process. We would have to compensate Cincinnati somehow in order to trade our 1st round pick for 2013 for a 1st round pick this year, as they have a lien on our 1st round pick for 2013.

    ===========================================

They only get that pick if we reach the AFC Championship this season. Otherwise, they get our #2. I’m sure Reggie could get Mike Brown to agree to something in its place, should we get to within one game of the Super Bowl.

Then, in classic Kelly Family meltdown mode, Brian threatened to kill a bunch of bloggers for making fun of him.

I’m sure he’s been locked away in Krappy’s basement crying his way through Forrest Gump for the 7,000th time, but let me know if you’ve seen the poor girl

Burfict’s career will be shorter and more useless than Jamarcus Russell’s.

He wasn’t even that good in the first place. 3rd best LB on his own team according to most reports. Was picked on and gameplanned to be isolated.

Than he flopped at the combine with the interviews.

He will be lucky to be drafted.

was Reggie showing his inexperience as GM by stating we need a STARTING olb in his last interview, on the record?

I don’t think Reggis will take a CB with that 3rd round pick and I hope he doesn’t. We have enough corners on the roster already.

They can get a corner in the later rounds if need be.

This team needs some OLB’s/DE’s and a NT ahead of another CB….again! Ugh

Here we go again. We drafted two DB’s last year in Rounds 3 and 4 and have signed 3 CB’s/DB’s so far.

Why do the Raiders need to draft another CB in Round 3 again?

Lets get some OLB’s/DE’s and some NT/DT’s on this team!

  123. Just Fire Baby Says:

Spencer, Bartell, DVD and Chekwa are EASILY one of the worst set of DB’s in the NFL, at least for 2012, unless Bartell and Spencer waaaaay exceed their career’s so far, and DVD and Chekwa take massive leaps in year 2.

We will draft a DB, hell maybe 2.

Because you need at least 2 if not 3 good corner in today’s NFL. I am not sure we even have one good corner right now.

Yeah, hope we don’t draft those two CB’s until Rounds 5 and 6! haha

DVD and Chekwa are still young and to early to give up on already. Jesus, they were 3rd and 4th round picks and still need time.

Why draft and 3rd Round CB and to just add him to the rotation and hope he stands out among the rest?

We need some beast football player LB’s/DE’s and a solid NT/DT to evantually replace Kelly and or Seymour to to help stuff the run.

The draft is deep at OLB/DE and DLine this year. There will still be good football players at those positions when the Raiders draft in Rounds 3 and 4.

  129. Just Fire Baby Says:

I don’t think The Reggie will factor in what has happened here in the past, as far as previous drafts and what not.

You saw it with some of the waives and roster moves already. He is starting over.

Money has been spent in FA adding players to the CB/DB position. They may not be high end superstars, but it still has been money spent on that position, whether you like those players Reggie signed or not.

Reggie won’t throw away a draft pick on another CB at the end of Round 3.

    Count on it!

    Not giving up on them.

I do think Chekwa will be a starter.

I am OK if the DB’s are later, I just think we need to keep trying to get some quality DB’s, because in reality, we may not have any right now.

I don’t think we will draft anyone for the D-line, besides a nickle pass rusher like a Brooks Reed or something. A speed-rusher type. We got a lot of moving parts there, and Seymour and Kelly ARE CLEARLY going to be prominently involved again this year, since we did not release either.
