Raiders get picks in 3rd, 4th, 5th rounds
By Jerry McDonald - NFL Writer
Monday, March 26th, 2012 at 1:25 pm in Oakland Raiders.
The Raiders significantly added to their draft Monday with the announcement at the NFL owner’s meetings they would receiver compensatory selections in the third, fourth and fifth rounds.
Oakland’s picks, as announced on its Twitter account, are No. 95, No 129 and No. 168 overall.
The Raiders had picks in only the fifth and sixth rounds before compensatory picks were announced.
Compensatory picks come at the end of the round around and cannot be traded, not that general manager Reggie McKenzie is going to be doing much dealing with such a limited draft.

Burfict = slow, questionable instincts, runs around blocks instead of shedding them, not very good in coverage, character concerns.
So basically, he’s the embodiment of all the weaknesses the Raiders LB corps had last season.

Q: Looking to add another quarterback behind Palmer, Pryor . .
McKenzie: Kind of the same as like running back for us, make sure you bring a legitimate guy in.
(For reference, here’s the answer to the RB question)
Q: Is running back a position you feel good about being able to find someone, either through draft, a released player, drafted free agent . . .
McKenzie: Absolutely. I’m OK with being able find a guy. Some guys get released that can step in and play. A lot of those situations happen.

If Al were still here, we’d be taking Burfict in the third.
Not so much with Reggie Mac.

Outstanding!
3rd, 4th and 5th picks???

My money is on Sean Spence.
A few other possibilities are DE/OLB Jake Bequette, NT Josh Chapman, and CB Leonard Johnson.
March 26th, 2012 at 1:30 pm
Yep yep!
Told ya we should get a 4th and 5th for sure along with the given of getting a 3rd!

I really hope Bobby Wagner from Utah State is there. Raiders have interviewed him a couple of times, I think; once at the Senior Bowl and again at the combine.
Could be a good one!

Wagner would be great. I think he’ll be gone at the beginning of Round 2, but who knows.

Burfict:
“His utter lack of discipline is a major concern for scouts; draws too many personal foul flags for late hits and constantly talks with officials and opponents. Has reportedly matured during over the past year, becoming a vocal leader on the field and in the locker room. Stamina could be improved.”
March 26th, 2012 at 1:36 pm
Raiders have around $2 million in cap space. A 3rd Rd salary is around $550,000 $700,000 year. They have more than a few needs. It will be tight.

4th Rd pick- NT/DT or OLB/DE

interesting, YA
Looking at the Raiders roster I would guess we’ll draft
2 LB’s
1 DB
1 OL
1 DL
that could change at any moment if the Raiders sign or re-sign somebody in the next 3+ weeks
March 26th, 2012 at 1:51 pm
Raiders Cap is around $2 million:
Low range,
3Rd pick salary= about 600,000 year
4th = $550,000
5th = $470,000
6th =$450,000
= $2,075,000
Reggie has a lot of work to do.
It may just be draft picks now and really low range FA’s

I agree. McKenzie has said he wants a “legitimate guy” to be the backup running back. I think that means he wants someone that’s played in the league for a little while, and that knows how to run routes and block.
Doesn’t sound to me like he’s looking for a rookie to fill that role.
March 26th, 2012 at 2:01 pm
According to a NFL.com article, comp picks factor in salary of players that left the most..

Tough to say. I mean we cut Wimb, Routt and Boss. They were not unrestricted FA’s until we cut them, so I don’t know how the rule applies in that situation.

Burfict is a Reggie pick NOT an Al Davis pick. The guy is a good football player but certainly not an adonis or a speedster.

“This guy had a second-round grade at one point,” noted NFL Net’s Charley Casserly. Burfict is going to work out for NFL teams again next week, but he’s been out of shape and thoroughly underwhelming throughout the pre-draft process. We wouldn’t expect Burfict to be drafted before the sixth round. Mar. 23 – 7:07 pm et

Then, in classic Kelly Family meltdown mode, Brian threatened to kill a bunch of bloggers for making fun of him.
I’m sure he’s been locked away in Krappy’s basement crying his way through Forrest Gump for the 7,000th time, but let me know if you’ve seen the poor girl

Burfict’s career will be shorter and more useless than Jamarcus Russell’s.
He wasn’t even that good in the first place. 3rd best LB on his own team according to most reports. Was picked on and gameplanned to be isolated.
Than he flopped at the combine with the interviews.
He will be lucky to be drafted.
March 26th, 2012 at 2:36 pm
Burfict is similar to Kimbo Slice.
All youtube clips, but in reality, he is not anywhere close to ready to compete with the pro’s.

on 3rd downs…the smaller the better…
Look at the success of all the tiny RB’s in the NFL:
Jones Drew
Ray Rice
Darren Sproles
Does this kid have the skills?
$$$$$$$$$$$$
He has skills, but we need a bigger back IMO. We have T Jones.
Go Aztecs!!

This is great news. I was hoping we would get three picks. Nice..

Can’t trade next year’s No.1 pick. It is in limbo as a condition of the Palmer trade. Can’t trade conditinal picks. Reggie’s going to just have to make do…

Speaking of Kimbo Slice, anyone see that dive Brian Green took against him Friday night?
March 26th, 2012 at 2:39 pm
I would guess a CB at pick 95…it is etched in stone…almost.
Look at Flemming from OU. Big frame with speed to match top round picks, comparable vertical, good reach plus some huge 9 1/2 inch hands…
March 26th, 2012 at 2:49 pm
was Reggie showing his inexperience as GM by stating we need a STARTING olb in his last interview, on the record?
and saying we have no money …
if there are many good LB’s left in picks 84-94, expect teams to trade up to grab one because they know Reggie wants one at #95 and he ain’t gonna let a good one slip by him

Another player:

March 26th, 2012 at 2:54 pm
I like Casey Hayward from Vandy.
Super smart, great ball skills, played against elite talent in the SEC, and competes. Did well at the Senior Bowl.
March 26th, 2012 at 2:55 pm
Rhett Ellison, TE/FB, USC
Height: 6-5 Weight: 251
^^^^
This guy would be a good late round pick. Play some blocking fullback and can block as a TE and can catch the football.

I don’t think Reggis will take a CB with that 3rd round pick and I hope he doesn’t. We have enough corners on the roster already.
They can get a corner in the later rounds if need be.
This team needs some OLB’s/DE’s and a NT ahead of another CB….again! Ugh
March 26th, 2012 at 2:57 pm
Went against Alshon Jeffery, potential 1st rounder, and bagged two INT’s.
Also two picks in his bowl game.
Great instincts and smarts, not elite speed.
Perfect player for the new era.
March 26th, 2012 at 2:58 pm
How do we not need a young DB?
We got two cheap, vet FA’s, and two incredibly green youngsters.
Can’t imagine that we are set there with that, after the misery that was our pass defense last year.
March 26th, 2012 at 3:02 pm
Raiders recieved the only 3rd round compensatory pick;
the 2nd of the 4th round compensatory pick;
and the first of the fifth round compensatory draft pick,
excellent!
March 26th, 2012 at 3:04 pm
SMU OL Beachum would be great selection with our 3rd or 4th round, but I do not think he will last that long.
March 26th, 2012 at 3:06 pm
Of course I think they will be looking at Ganaway also in Round 5 or 6 possibly.
Terrance Ganaway, RB/FB Baylor
Height: 6-1 Weight: 238
March 26th, 2012 at 3:06 pm
I think we are set at the CB position. What good are CB’s and secondary, if you don’t have a pass rush?
Let’s draft a LB or DE w/ our 3rd rounder.
March 26th, 2012 at 3:07 pm
I’m sure Reggie will find an udrafted RB in this years draft.

Here we go again. We drafted two DB’s last year in Rounds 3 and 4 and have signed 3 CB’s/DB’s so far.
Why do the Raiders need to draft another CB in Round 3 again?
Lets get some OLB’s/DE’s and some NT/DT’s on this team!
March 26th, 2012 at 3:09 pm
Spencer, Bartell, DVD and Chekwa are EASILY one of the worst set of DB’s in the NFL, at least for 2012, unless Bartell and Spencer waaaaay exceed their career’s so far, and DVD and Chekwa take massive leaps in year 2.
We will draft a DB, hell maybe 2.

Because you need at least 2 if not 3 good corner in today’s NFL. I am not sure we even have one good corner right now.
You don’t think ALL AFC West teams are going to load up on DB’s now that Peyton is in the division?

Yeah, hope we don’t draft those two CB’s until Rounds 5 and 6! haha
DVD and Chekwa are still young and to early to give up on already. Jesus, they were 3rd and 4th round picks and still need time.
Why draft and 3rd Round CB and to just add him to the rotation and hope he stands out among the rest?
We need some beast football player LB’s/DE’s and a solid NT/DT to evantually replace Kelly and or Seymour to to help stuff the run.
The draft is deep at OLB/DE and DLine this year. There will still be good football players at those positions when the Raiders draft in Rounds 3 and 4.
March 26th, 2012 at 3:17 pm
I don’t think The Reggie will factor in what has happened here in the past, as far as previous drafts and what not.
You saw it with some of the waives and roster moves already. He is starting over.
He will draft whatever player he wants, and not worry about whether we drafted DVD or Pryor or McClain or whoever previously.
March 26th, 2012 at 3:18 pm

Money has been spent in FA adding players to the CB/DB position. They may not be high end superstars, but it still has been money spent on that position, whether you like those players Reggie signed or not.
Reggie won’t throw away a draft pick on another CB at the end of Round 3.
Count on it!
March 26th, 2012 at 3:20 pm
There will be much better football players available at a number of different positions, than at freakin CB with that end of Round 3 pick!

Not giving up on them.
I do think Chekwa will be a starter.
I am OK if the DB’s are later, I just think we need to keep trying to get some quality DB’s, because in reality, we may not have any right now.
I don’t think we will draft anyone for the D-line, besides a nickle pass rusher like a Brooks Reed or something. A speed-rusher type. We got a lot of moving parts there, and Seymour and Kelly ARE CLEARLY going to be prominently involved again this year, since we did not release either.
March 26th, 2012 at 3:23 pm

CAn’t really count on Bartell with his injuries, and Spencer is not a great option as a starter at this stage in his career.

That Round 3 pick should be going towards at OLB/DE versatile 4-3, 3-4 player or a beast two gapper NT/DT.
Maybe even a DT/DE type 5 technique.

we already have a lot of players who can do that. Lamarr Houston, Desmond Bryant, plus Seymour and Kelly in a 3-4
