With the 15th pick of the 3rd round, pick #78 overall, The Oakland Raiders selected Terrelle Pryor, QB, Ohio State University.
March 27th, 2012 at 7:36 am
I expect 4 hall of famers out of those five picks….the 5th one should be a solid perennial pro bowler….but as a WR, will not make the HOF.
Get it done Reggie!

“McKenzie said his first year as a general manager has been a challenge, but he has enjoyed molding an organization.
“It’s been different,” McKenzie said. “Believe it or not, it’s different than Green Bay. What’s the quote, ‘I ain’t in Kansas anymore.’ Seriously, it’s been really good. When I interviewed with (owner) Mark Davis and the decision was made, he’s going to let me do it my way. He wants me to do it my way. So I’m taking that to the fullest.”
I’ll do it myyyyyy waaayyyyyyyyyy!

That’s a good point about no big defensive signings. What does that say about Reggie’s confidence in Tarver? I think he’s under a microscope. A one year trial period to see if he can turn the defense around with just coaching
***
@G123
I don’t think it has anything to do with Tarver. I think if Reggie had the funds and guys like Routt & Wimbley weren’t just given MASSIVE deals by Al Davis the previous offseason, everybody would be given another shot under this defensive system/scheme and the coaches would have a chance to see if these players can fit in with what we’re trying to accomplish on D
Stan & Kam were basically cap casualties imo

Reggie, you should just go ahead and bring Clay Matthews to The Raiders when his contract is up after the 2013 season.

I don’t even think Lou Murphy could net us a 6th or 7th rounder.
He will probably get the same treatment that lame Kirk Morrison did, package him to move up maybe 15-20 spots in a later round.

I thought we got a 5th?

+++++++++++++++++++++
I don’t know…..I think the one year trial period BS ended last October. I think coaches will now get a fair shake with the Raiders, which in turn, will make more and more coaches take the Raiders as a serious possibility instead of a last resort.

One team I could see giving up a late pick for Murphy would be NYJ. With Lal and Chaz over there, and them needing depth at WR.

The Bengals have signed Jason Allen and brought back Pacman Jones, but it doesn’t seem they are done at cornerback yet.
Speaking at the owners meetings, Bengals coach Marvin Lewis said that the team is working toward signing Terence Newman.

I think we are pretty much set at CB. Or we will be once this Pat Lee kid is officially brought on board.
I do think we are thin at S though. Wouldn’t surprise me at all if S is one of our first 2 picks in the draft.
TOTALLY agree with RRS take on Branch. Let’s see what he can do in year 2 as a legit S. Was BY FAR the worst player in our secondary prior to last year.

Said it before, Trufant used to be one of my favorite players, but his back is done. There was a time that Trufant was better than every FA CB thats been available this offseason. Theres a reason that hes still not signed yet, and its his back. Really sucks to see him go out this way, cause he was a big time player.

Q: Talk about personnel that you’re inheriting and how much talent is there, if guys can fit in and can you take advantage of their skills?
Allen: I think we’ve got some key players in place. Obviously, up front, we’ve got a pretty good group of guys up front where we can get after the passer and are still pretty stout against the run up front
————————————————————-
Getting back to this ….
Who are the guys he’s talking about who can get after the passer? The DTs????
Who’s stout against the run? The DEs????

Don’t forget about Brandon Underwood and we also tendered RFA McCann. I think we’ll get a few undrafted fa’s to compete with this group. I don’t think we’ll use any of our draft picks here

We havent gone a draft without adding a DB of some sort, either a CB or S, since 99.
This may be the first time in a long time that happens in a long time, this draft. We’ve somehow become pretty deep at DB, with just some minor tweaks. I think the secondary has potential this year if DA and Tarver get them on the same page.
March 27th, 2012 at 7:57 am
Never said you were all badf.
1 super duper ridiculous football take doesn’t make a bad guy at all.
My bad, 2. Forgot about you and Tebow.
March 27th, 2012 at 8:01 am
Yeah, Hwn …
We cut Henderson and everyone tells me TK sucks against the run. ShoNasty only played 3 games, so who he must be talking about Bryant and Houston as DEs.
Or maybe he was talking about his Dline in terms of a 3-4? Someone said we had a big 325lb NT on the roster.
Bryant and Seymour would be able to get after the passer from the DE positions.
I’m reaching here folks, someone help me out, lol!

I guess as of now, we’d have to wait and see…sort of trust our coaching staff…if they say that they are pretty stout against the run…well, ok, still not buying it til I see it!!!
March 27th, 2012 at 8:04 am
Vegas,
Do you really think we are going to draft 2 DBs? I think Bartell will start, and DVD and Chekwa will have a chance to compete with Spencer for the other spot. McCann got tendered, so he is not going anywhere. How many CBs do we need?
March 27th, 2012 at 8:06 am
This is the 3rd coaching staff to mistakenly think that this front 7 can stop the run.. I was really hoping for some changes..
March 27th, 2012 at 8:06 am

A’s/Yankees Saturday, May 26th? Tailgate at 9, 10???
March 27th, 2012 at 8:06 am
We need linebackers more than anything.
We have the worst linebackers in the league.
March 27th, 2012 at 8:09 am
LDE: Bryant/ Brodine as a nickel pass rusher
DT: Seymour/ Houston
DT: TK/ Houston
RDE: Shaughnessy, Hall Davis
SLB: Curry
MLB: McClain
WLB: we need a starting WLB (Goethel is an option, if he can stay healthy)
CB: Bartell, McCann
CB: Spencer/ Chekwa/ DVD
SS: Branch, MM
FS: Huff

O,
I do think we need to draft some DB’s, especially with Peyton now in the division.
How can we expect Bartell to start and be healthy? DVD? Pass. McCann is a kick returner ONLY.
Having bodies at the spot is one thing, having PLAYERS is a whole another.
I think we are seriously lacking some players at DB.

Yeah, that NT is Travis Ivey, from Maryland. Hes huge. I look forward to watching him in preseason. Will be keeping an eye on him. I think Bryant and Houston start coming into their own this season, with some more experience, and a competent coaching staff.
March 27th, 2012 at 8:12 am
Hawaiin bud,..I have tix for the sunday game,..its supposedly Mannys first game back, game 51, but if rainouts prior to that one Im not sure, but I think Brien will be there with me that sunday.
March 27th, 2012 at 8:12 am
@Jhill
I think ShoNasty, Seymour, Kelly, Houston & Bryant can all pressure the QB and collapse the pocket
Run Defense has always been my concern, but DA doesn’t sound a bit worried about the D-Line in that area
if the DL is “stout vs the run” who isn’t?
March 27th, 2012 at 8:14 am
With a healthy Sho-nasty, a (hopefully) improved scheme, and more reps for Desmond Bryant, I think that alone will shave off some yards per game allowed on the ground.
March 27th, 2012 at 8:15 am
I think we are seriously lacking some players at DB.
———————————————————–
But we would be ok if we signed Porter?
We have 5 corners who have legitimate shots at winning the starting job.
We don’t have ONE person to compete for WLB.
We have ZERO DE depth. Especially for nickle pass rushing situations.
Bigger fish to fry than adding a 6th corner to compete.
March 27th, 2012 at 8:16 am
McKenzie mentions the need for an OLB, but he also keeps hinting around his ability to get those guys late in the draft (maybe something to do with him being a former LB).
I believe our draft picks will be along both lines, some DB’s (more than one, maybe 1 CB and 1 S) and probably one skill position player. Hell maybe Kellen Moore or some other flyer as a QB with our last pick.
March 27th, 2012 at 8:17 am

Idk man. I hope all is well with them tho. Go Reggie!
March 27th, 2012 at 8:17 am
It’s ok RR. We can always find a good RB in the draft or after. Not worried about RB as much as I’m about Nickel pass rusher & NT. I also think we should add another vet CB.
March 27th, 2012 at 8:17 am
Ive never seen a run defense as bad as ours the last couple yrs.. I hope the coaches can work a miricle on that side of the ball..
March 27th, 2012 at 8:19 am
We have 5 corners who have legitimate shots at winning the starting job.
**********************************
Only because all 5 collectively aren’t very good.
I have hope for Chekwa, but again, what did he say, maybe 100 snaps last year. Than we are going to toss him out there on the island against Peyton week 1?
We need players at the position, not 5 guys with a chance to start.
If you got 5 guys with a chance to start, you got a serious problem at the position, IMO.
March 27th, 2012 at 8:20 am

They are no longer on the team, so no need to worry about it.

*****************
So you think in 2010 that Branch was outplayed by Mike Mitchell, Jeremy Ware, Walter McFadden, Hiram Eugene?
There seems to be some memory issues in here.
March 27th, 2012 at 8:22 am
Our Dline IS stout versus the run. They have led the NFL (or been in the top 5) for the last few years in tackles for a loss… however they also lead the league in runs of more than 20 yards. The problem is getting it done EVERY play. Consistancy. If DA and Tarver can bring THAT to our defense we will be a very dangerous team
March 27th, 2012 at 8:23 am

@JFB
McKenzie is drafting the BPA so discussing draft positions of NEED is a waste of time unless the BPA also fills a need.
Reggie could draft a RB, TE or OL (maybe even all 3) ahead of SSLB depending on who is on the board when we’re on the clock
March 27th, 2012 at 8:24 am
Good, we now have 5 picks when normally a team gets 7 so it’s not that bad.
Obviously no picks in rounds 1-2 but we’ll get 3 players in the top 150.
And at this point, almost every position has a starter in place.
QB Palmer
RB DMAC
FB Reece
WR DHB-Moore-Ford
OT Veldheer-Barnes
OG Carslile-Brisiel
C Wis
DE Shaugnessy-Houston
DT Seymour-Kelly-Bryant
OLB Curry
MLB McClain
CB Bartell-Spencer, Pat Lee and the kids.
FS Huff
SS Branch
We need to find a complete TE, but even there we have a solid blocker in Myers and a pass-catching kid to develop in Ausberry in case we can’t find anyone.
And we need a starting OLB but that’s it.
We can obviously get better at some spots but the point is, the starters seem pretty much set for next year, outside of TE and 1 OLB.
