UPDATE: Free agent linebacker Philip Wheeler said on his Twitter account Thursday morning he was visiting the Raiders.
“On my way to Oakland to see the Raiders. Which team would be a better fit for me this season. This is a tuff career choice.”
Unrestricted free agent linebacker Philip Wheeler, considered one of the better players on a horrific Indianapolis Colts defense in 2011, is visiting with the Raiders, according to the NFL Network’s Jason LaCanfora.
Wheeler, 6-foot-2, 240 pounds, had 84 tackles last season for the Colts, 47 unassisted. He visited with the Miami Dolphins but isn’t likely to return to the Colts where head coach Chuck Pagano plans on installing a 3-4 defense.
Although relatively undersized for the position, Wheeler played strong side linebacker for the Colts. General manager Reggie McKenzie called that position a priority, given that two-year starter Kamerion Wimbley was released.
Whoever replaces Wimbley isn’t likely to have the same role. Wimbley played as a defensive end with his hand on the ground in nickel situations. The new strong side starter will probably come off the field on those downs
