Raiders trade Campbell for veteran running back

By Steve Corkran
Friday, March 30th, 2012 at 12:41 pm in Oakland Raiders.

Former Carolina Panthers running back Mike Goodson just Tweeted that he has been traded to the Raiders. One report said the Raiders traded offensive lineman Bruce Campbell in exchange for Goodson.
The Panthers just confirmed the deal. A Raiders official said via text that the deal is official.
“We wanted to acquire another player to compete at the running back position,” Raiders general manager Reggie McKenzie said in a press release. “He can do a lot of things in our scheme on offense. He’s very versatile, he has natural running skills, he’s a great receiver out of the backfield, and he has kick-return ability. I’m anxious to see if he can put all that together here as a Raider.”
Goodson, 6-feet and 212 pounds, entered the NFL as a fourth-round draft pick of the Panthers out of Texas A&M. He rushed for 501 yards on 125 carries the past three seasons as a seldom-used backup. He also caught 43 passes for 329 yards and averaged 21.7 yards on kick returns.
He is in the final season of his original contract, which calls for him to earn $615,000 this season. If the deal occurred, as Goodson said, Goodson is expected to compete with Taiwan Jones, Lonyae Miller and Rashawn Jackson for the backup spot to starter Darren McFadden.
That spot came open when Michael Bush bolted in free agency for a contract with the Chicago Bears.
Goodson started only three of the 28 games he played in the past three seasons. He played in only four games last season and finished the year on injured-reserve.
Campbell was a fourth-round pick of the Raiders in the 2010 NFL draft. They had high hopes for him as a potential fixture on their offensive line.
However, Campbell failed to materialize into a dependable player and played only sparingly both seasons. He appeared in 14 of 32 games the past two seasons, with no starts.
In other news, Adam Caplan reported that East Carolina offensive tackle Stephen Baker is scheduled for a pre-draft visit with the Raiders in April.

Mamula 7th overall, more than 30 career sacks.
    Campbell 4th round…

    no comparison.

6 feet 212lbs? Sounds like a Rock Cartwright replacement without the cool name.
We still need a big bruiser for short and goal line situations imo.

Man, that voting site is slowing down….I think the NFL is trying to fk the Raiders again!

  • RaiderRetribution

good trade a back up rb that will see playing time, returns punts this will free up Moore to focus on his recieving skills (he was doing great until Hue had him retutrning punts, then was solid again at end of season)

Raiders will definately be drafting at least 2 OLs,

we only have six on the roster (that have gametime experience)

Philadelphia just lost their probowl LT- I thought we were going to trade them Barnes.

worse picks than Mamula in 1995, due to injury or bust status:

    #1 overall – Kijana Carter
    #4 – Michael Westbrook
    #10 – JJ Stokes

    lol @ 2007 Patriots all-hype comment.

Because going 18-0 is obviously all hype.
Very similar to, say, last year’s Eagles.

Toughest thing for Mamula to deal with, he was Reggie White’s replacement and the Eagles traded up to get him and the picks they gave up were used to pick Warren Sapp and Derrick Brooks.

you don’t remember people in here asking for more man-to-man D anytime a zone defense resulted in a catch for the opposing O?

Many here had no patience in developing it long-time.

Or wanting to play Pryor after JC’s injury? Or arguing that his college stats have no bearing on how good he’ll become, despite terrible accuracy? Too many kool-aid peeps.

I’ll tell you what, Mike Mamula will never shake the bust label, and I get it, based on his draft status, but 2 things:

    1. Its not his fault Philly overdrafted him. All he did was put on a superb workout, like he was supposed to.

    2. It wasnt like he couldnt play. Compare his production to say, Vernon Gholston, and youll see what I mean. Mamula wasnt all pro, but the production he put up in his few seasons woulda made him one of the best players on our defense the last few years. I know he at least got anywhere from 5 to 8 sacks each of his years.

What is the deal with this poll – do they take some time to verify the votes or something. Were leading 51-49 with 2 minutes to go then leading at 50-50 at about 3:04 when it shut off.

Update: I just caught up with Matt Williamson of Scouts Inc. He thinks Goodson has a chance to have a solid role in Oakland.

“He has a lot of ability,” Williamson said. “I have no idea why he got in the doghouse in Carolina, but I see him as an excellent change of pace for McFadden and insurance for Jones. I like it, but he has fumble issues.”

UPDATE II: McKenzie issued this statement on the trade: “We wanted to acquire another player to compete at the running back position. He can do a lot of things in our scheme on offense. He’s very versatile, he has natural running skills, he’s a great receiver out of the backfield and he has kick-return ability. I’m anxious to see if he can put all that together here as aRaider.”

“We appreciate the work Bruce has put in thus far with the Raiders, and we wish him the best”
