Raiders trade Campbell for veteran running back

Former Carolina Panthers running back Mike Goodson just Tweeted that he has been traded to the Raiders. One report said the Raiders traded offensive lineman Bruce Campbell in exchange for Goodson.
The Panthers just confirmed the deal. A Raiders official said via text that the deal is official.
“We wanted to acquire another player to compete at the running back position,” Raiders general manager Reggie McKenzie said in a press release. “He can do a lot of things in our scheme on offense. He’s very versatile, he has natural running skills, he’s a great receiver out of the backfield, and he has kick-return ability. I’m anxious to see if he can put all that together here as a Raider.”
Goodson, 6-feet and 212 pounds, entered the NFL as a fourth-round draft pick of the Panthers out of Texas A&M. He rushed for 501 yards on 125 carries the past three seasons as a seldom-used backup. He also caught 43 passes for 329 yards and averaged 21.7 yards on kick returns.
He is in the final season of his original contract, which calls for him to earn $615,000 this season. If the deal occurred, as Goodson said, Goodson is expected to compete with Taiwan Jones, Lonyae Miller and Rashawn Jackson for the backup spot to starter Darren McFadden.
That spot came open when Michael Bush bolted in free agency for a contract with the Chicago Bears.
Goodson started only three of the 28 games he played in the past three seasons. He played in only four games last season and finished the year on injured-reserve.
Campbell was a fourth-round pick of the Raiders in the 2010 NFL draft. They had high hopes for him as a potential fixture on their offensive line.
However, Campbell failed to materialize into a dependable player and played only sparingly both seasons. He appeared in 14 of 32 games the past two seasons, with no starts.
In other news, Adam Caplan reported that East Carolina offensive tackle Stephen Baker is scheduled for a pre-draft visit with the Raiders in April.

did tscott have a horrible year because he wasn’t fully back from injury or is he done? TScott or JMoss?

  • DT42

Good trade, fills a need. Wish we knew what we were giving away but Campbell never developed (or was developed) and would have spent this year sitting on the bench.

  • kokomo

This trade cant be worse i.e. Campbell was a piece of junk who didn’t see the field last year. I guess with our five picks it’ll be all Def and maybe if we can get a stud center.

  • Hardline

I like the fact that Goodson has catching abiities; he caught 40 balls in 2010. Plus he is quicker and more agile than Bush.

The critical issue is that DMAC is going down (out for the season), probably by mid-season this year. We need backup to keep our running game on track.

Bruce Campbell was an AD project, and ultimately not an exciting prospect, so he had to go.

    Terelle Owens and Raiders working?!?!?

    xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx
Oakland Raiders receiver Darrius Heyward-Bey tweeted a picture Tuesday of three teammates (including quarterback Carson Palmer) and a fifth man, in what appeared to be in a workout setting.

    The man?

    Terrell Owens.

Yep, the 38-year-old receiver who has fallen off the radar of NFL teams. Does the group photo mean Owens is on the way to signing with the Raiders?

Let’s not get too far ahead of ourselves here. Owens and Palmer played together in the past and are friends. It might have been just a matter of Owens being in Los Angeles and getting together with the group.

Plus, players don’t make personnel decisions in the world of Raiders general manager Reggie McKenzie. He has other things to worry about other than signing Owens. And the Raiders have a crowded receiving group. If Owens signs with the Raiders, I would think it would be down the road.

My guess is that Heyward-Bey is sitting back and smiling, knowing his tweet caused a slight ruckus.

Just when I had cut Reggie some slack based on Steve’s chat the other day where he unequivocally stated that canning Hue was Mark’s idea and not Reggie’s, Reggie goes and trades the Beast for a guy who isn’t even as good as Lonyae Miller, our current No. 3 back.

Gotta say, I’m really disappointed by this. Bruce Campbell never had much of a shot but I liked what I saw in his brief preseason work and we all know he had tremendous potential. Why not give him another camp and preseason to see where he’s at? Goodson is a JAG. A JAG who fumbles something ridiculous like 1 in every 20 touches.

This move makes no sense to me.

Bruce Campbell for a 2008 Heisman candidate/hopeful? I would say that we got the better of the two.

Campbell was drafted in hopes that he would stick , but more along the lines of getting a better/closer look at upside. Well, he has been here quite a while with no PT.

We get a former Heisman hopeful with low miles and that will see the field for sure. Not a replacement for Bush, more like insurance for DMC, IMO.

    Starts my weekend off right.

Plus, we see that Reggie is working underground and can fire a shot at any moment. Noone saw this coming.

    All Raiders in attention!

  • RaiderRetribution

Reggie: Steve, you’ve coached him for a year and your an all-pro offensive lineman. what do you think of this combine beast, Bruce?

Steve: He would make a great body builder.

    Steve: So did I.

Bruce has had 100s of NFL practices by now. Coaches know what he is. Not much upside left after all that time. Linemen that make it generally don’t sneak up on anyone in the NFL. They’re usually impressive from the get-go.

Mike Goodson on the other hand doesn’t have a lot of mileage on him, was not getting playing time behind DeAngelo Williams and Jonathan Stewart, yet started three games in 2010 and had 100 yards in each. Plus he can catch the rock. Trade a guy we need for a workout guy no one needs? Uh, yeah!

  • horrordude0215

Good move. There was a reason why everyone and their mother gave up on him, and we have more McFadden insurance.

Now we’ll be focusing on OLB and NT in the draft. I wouldn’t mind Burfict personally… huge potential there.

Nice move. Solves several problems. Gets more depth in the backfield from a non-rook that has some NFL games under his belt, does good things for the cap, and B Campbell is easily replaced — now all that we need Pryor to do is put on another 65 lbs on his 6’5″ frame and fill the role of freakish athlete on the OL.

  • Chris in NY

    Duck,
Campbell has only been here two seasons. His rookie season he wasn’t chosen as a starter. Few 4th round o-linemen start as rooks. Last year he was hurt in camp and thus never had a real chance to compete. With the lack of physical practices once the season starts I don’t see how an olineman can win a job. At that point it’s only about the starter losing the job or getting hurt.
Bottom line: It’s not like Campbell was here 6 or 7 years. He was here 2 seasons and never had a real legit shot to earn time in either one.

I consider this Campbell for Goodsen trade something like the Eagles pulled off when they got all that value for McNabb when he was out of gas. There is about as much chance of winning the lottery as Campbell beating out Barksdale at this point let alone Barnes or Veldeer.

    Breaking News:

Peyton Manning’s head came off today when he pulled his helmet off. Sources close to the situation say that Manning indicated, via blinking, that he hopes to be back by mid season.

More on this story at ten.

  • YoungAmerican

Bruce Campbell didn’t play a single snap that made anyone, from any of the three coaching staffs he’s worked with, think he’s a legitimate NFL player. Moreover, the game tape on this kid was AWFUL coming out of college. Waist-bender who leaves his feet and reaches for blocks. Relies on his strength and constantly fails to get leverage. No technique whatsoever.

If you watched this guy and thought “this guy has potential!” I don’t know what you were watching. Classic workout warrior with zero football IQ. Personally, I’m just glad the pre-draft rumors were wrong about Al wanting this guy in the first round.

At least Goodson has contributed on the field. Fumbling is a problem that can be solved. Moreover, he’s insurance for the oft-injured duo of DMac and Jones – which means the Raiders don’t have to cut out large chunks of their playbook because all of a sudden they don’t have a guy who can do off-tackle or perimeter runs.

Bottom line we traded a sliver of potential for real production. Goodson WILL be productive for us, but rushing and receiving AND as a KR AND on special teams.

I realize everyone wants to be optimistic and thinks Reggie is King Midas right now, which is fine. I know that if Reg Mac traded McFadden for a Bubby Brister rookie card 50% + of the board would be in favor. So pardon me if I take the Mike Goodson love with a grain of salt.

Chris what I think most NFL people will say is Al OVER PAID for Bruce Campbell in the draft. Some thought he didn’t warrant being drafted at all based on his college production. Could he be developed? Obviously no one on our staff thought so. Goodson on the other hand played well when he did play, and had no hope of seeing playing time. Makes sense to me.
