The only player that I think we could trade to get a high third would be Ford.
    *************************

If the guy we get is not better than the guy we traded, then that is a bad deal. What is the likelihood that a third round pick is going to bring more to the table than Ford? The answer is highly unlikely so enough with this crazy talk of trading one of our starting WR’s. It’s not like Ford is a one trick pony or beyond the halfway point of his likely career duration. It makes no sense to trade good talent just to have something to do.

So we don’t have a bundle of draft picks this time around. So what? Get over it. We’ll be just fine. Don’t fix something that doesn’t need fixing.

  13. JB Says:

What are the odds that the Colts take RG III instead of the expected Luck? If they did, that would certainly give the Skins a curve-ball to hit in what, 10 minutes?

RG III & Luck appear to be the best two QB prospects in quite awhile.

    ==============================================

I’d say there’s zero chance the Colts take RGIII, simply because Luck’s too much of a sure thing.

The Redskins have been very careful to say they’d be happy with either one, so I doubt there’d be too much drama.

    &&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&

It just drives me nuts everytime I see last season’s pass plays where our CB’s didn’t even look for the ball, as it sailed 12 inches past their heads into the waiting hands of opponent receivers, who then ripped off big yardage.

Starting in elementary school, through junior high and high school, playing CB, I always watched the body language of the receiver, and when the indication was there I turned and looked for the ball, and always, (I mean ALWAYS) made a play on the ball, and was either successful or unsuccessful.

I can’t understand how the coaches would allow a CB to just let the ball pass by them without turning to look for it. If I were Rod Woodson I would be having hissy fits at our CB’s, screaming at them until I was blue in the face.

It was a total breakdown: 1) on the part of acquisitions gaining a CB who wouldn’t even bother to turn into the ball; 2) on the part of the coaches to allow it to happen.

Again if I was the CB coach, as the CB you either spot the ball and make a play on it, successful or unsuccessful, or you would face a figurative ass-kicking after the game. Benched, fined, and/or released very soon.

It still amazes me to have watched almost all opponent passes sail past our CB’s who didn’t even give an effort to spot the ball, then make a play on it.

    C2E,

Don’t worry; you’ll get used to it.

And btw, AD operated in the throes of dementia and was incompetent for his last 10 seasons, and should have been tossed out of any management position by the minority partners under the theories of negligence and oppression.

  27. RAIDERMAN99 Says:

Sometimes desperation can be the mother of innovation.

Tarver and Allen, faced with an anemic LB corp, might find salvation or strike gold by thinking out of the box and doing something very innovative.

I can easily envision a package where both Matt S and Houston abandon their down linemen position and play ’stand up’ with either, or both, at the LOS or at LB depth.

    Crazy ? Maybe.

But I can remember observing during the Texas-Bama national championship game that Houston had better lateral pursuit than Slowlando.

Seem to recall Matt S. taking an incredibly deep drop up the left sideline last pre-season and procuring an impressive interception.

Normally, I’m adverse to monkeying with linemen and asking them to play in a LB role. Lord knows we’ve seen some epic failures along these lines before (Grant Irons, Brayton, Scott). But that doesn’t mean that every experiment or innovation is doomed to failure, and unless the draft or an unexpected FA signing offers immediate help – the Raids are going to have to come up with something to compensate for the noticeable lack of depth at LB.

Won’t surprise me at all to see Tarver and Allen throw some incredible curveballs at opposing offensive coordinators.

    Expect the unexpected.

But he’s recovered enough that he played a lot on special teams last 2 years, apparently well, and got significant playing time as 4th CB behind C-Wood, T. Williams (I think that’s his name), and whovever the hell their nickel CB was. He apparently held up pretty well at CB during Super Bowl run after they had a lot of injuries. Hopefully he’ll compete for significant playing time. Chekwa was hurt last year – hamstring, shoulder surgery, and he’s a lot more competive looking and physical than DVD looked, though DVD is fluid & fast. Chekwa looked like a decent gunner on kick coverage too. Lets see what he can do healthy.

Hey JH. Good to chat with you again. Saw your comment a while back noting that we’re usually in accord on personnel isssues and evaluations, but that we differ on Slow. Meant to get back to you on that.

I don’t have any of the Raid games on tape from last season, otherwise I’d scour the film and think I could come up with some other examples of poor play by Slow.

Besides the two plays that I continually mention, I seem to remember Slow failing (or being out of place) on 4th down in Buffalo. Seem to recall him being toasted and trailing badly on a delayed screen pass across the field in Houston. Give him credit for some gutsy ‘play through the pain’ that day though.

Wondered what the heck he was doing on Tolbert’s run up the left sideline late against SD. When he finally got in position to knock Tolbert out of bounds, it looked like one of those ‘Do I actually have to hit this guy and get involved ?’ moments. Don’t put the primary blame for that run on him though.

Those are a few that come to mind without the benefit of a comprehensive tape review.

But since I respect your analysis, I’d like to put the ball in your court and ask for some plays or evidence that Slow can actually bring it, never mind being remotely worthy of the 8th pick overall.

Besides, isn’t the ‘jogging’, ‘whiffing’ and ‘gun play’ buffoonery enough for you to have serious doubts that Slow is redeemable ?

I can’t emphasive how incredibly bad the whiff on Stafford was enough.

Completely unobstructed view of the play developing right in front of him. Totally unblocked. Nothing between Slow, the bullseye on Staff’s chest and a Raider win.

I’ll harbor some hope that Slow can get his head on straight, stop playing with guns and being a gangsta when he’s supposed to be attending a funeral. I’ll even excuse the ‘jog’ as a momentary lapse and hope that lack of professionalism and hustle doesn’t surface again.

But I can’t put aside how incredibly pathetic that Stafford whiff was. That play, more than any other, doomed the Raider season.

it’s gonna be so much more exciting!

I’m not real familiar with Denver’s personnel, but it looks like last year Allen did a great job with mostly scrap pile players and a few great ones — draftee Von Miller, Elvis Dumervil off IR, aging Champ Bailey; a few solid players like OLB DJ Williams I think his name is but a bunch of guys who let us score 59 points in a game the year before. With Allen coaching, they improved immensely and guys like Broderick Bunkley had career years. Some of the players he got a lot out of included running down only ILB Joe Mays and 6-0 220 lbs LB Wesley Woodyard or whatever his name is, playing him at several spots. Pretty impressive. Our defense has some talent on DL lots of 3-T type DTs and Shaughnessy, Tyvon Branch, Ron Bartell (if healthy) and a lot of average guys based on past performance. But new Reggime will work to improve personnel, LB highest priority, bring in competition, coach up some of the disappointing former 1st round picks we have on defense, develop and utilize talent in hopefully effective schemes. The coaching staff is young but energetic & creative and hopefully can get results sooner as well as later. New coaches may use Mike Mitchell in some LB type roles too.

One thing I discovered is that Allen was disappointed in pass defense of OLB DJ Williams and felt limited by that…wonder what he’ll think of pass coverage of our LBs, but he won’t put them in impossible matchups like Bresnahan did. Wheeler rep not too good pass defense, may be used as blitzer a lot here. As he said in interview, with Robert Mathis & Dwight Freeney as down ends for Colts, he didn’t get much opportunity to blitz there but was good blitzing in college

Grant Irons was only made the regular season roster because his daddy was a knockout LB for early 1970s Raiders. Grant never had anything near his father’s toughness, and wasn’t athletically up to playing LB either…so don’t let that failed experiment bother you, it was doomed to failure.

    99,

Stafford whiff was disappointing. I think that is in line with some of the other arm tackles he pulls out from time to time.

How about him getting downfield in a cover 2 on that Calvin Johnson pass? For him to even be in the play so far downfield showed me some hustle or at least recognition on what Stafford was trying to do.

I was watching the last SD game the other day and McClain made the 1st 2 stops of the game, then Wimbley jumps offsides on 3rd down to give them a 1st down.

Not saying the kid is a pro bowler. And he certainly can get a lot better as can everyone else on that defense. I think the new HC and DC will have the entire unit playing better.

    Interesting post # 27.

    You made me think.

Houston and Shaughnessy are certainly versatile enough to move around the front 7 and they have in the past, the Raiders did use some zone-blitz the last few years but I’m sure Allen and Tarver we can come up with new ideas and more effective ways to attack.

    Speaking of Lamarr Houston.

Over at Baltimore they had a huge run-stuffing machine at OLB in Jarrett Johnson, unfortunately now a Charger, Johnson was a 6′3 285 DE coming out of College, he ran his 40 in over 5 seconds but he dropped to 260 and moved to OLB with the Ravens and excelled.

Now Houston came out as a 6′3 305 DT-DE but ran his 40 in 4.84 and out-performed Johnson in every combine drill while carrying 20 more pounds.

Now I don’t think he can be a full-time LB, but I’m sure he can stand up and play LB in certain situations with particular personnel groupings and either stuff the run or rush the passer efectively.

That’s the kind of stuff that would give the Defense the ability to disguise their calls and make QB’s think about what’s coming.

This is true. Pat Lee was a 2nd rounder out of Auburn. An Auburn team that beat #3 Florida in Florida. Of interest was Pat Lee’s backup that year was Walter McFadden who the Raiders drafted in 2010. Lee played very well at corner in the Super Bowl win against Pittsburgh, especially in the 2nd half. He also returned kickoffs in that Super Bowl win.

    Hey man.

I used to think that way about Denver’s D until I looked closer.

8 out of 11 starters were drafted in the first 3 rounds, including 5 first-rounders, 4 of them along the front 7.

1st Rounders were DE Ayers, DT Bunkley, LB’s DJ Williams and Von Miller and CB Champ Bailey, everyone was a top 20 pick and there’s 2 top 5 picks.

DT Marcus Thomas and LB Dummervil were 4th round picks, Dawkins and Will Moore both 2nd round Safeties (Moore goy injured at some point) Andre Goodman the other CB was a former 3rd rounder, starting MLB Joe Mays was a 6th rounder.

Not exactly an All-Pro team, but most of them were high to mid round draft picks, some of them weren’t playing well before Fox and Allen got there.

    Sounds familiar?.

    Yo Master B

Got a date question for you. I met a nasty party girl at a bar and when it closed we went to dennys for a grand slam. Well, after I went to the head and barfed, we took a cab back to my apartment. As the sun was comin up, she decided she wanted to get dirty and I was cool with that. But then I discovered a foul odor. She stunk and stunk bad. Real bad. It was so bad I still haven’t got the smell out of my apartment. Anyway I told her to leave. Did I do the right thing? Should I go back to the bar and give it another try?

    ———————

Thanks for your question, blogger. I get this one alot.

Obviously you did the right thing by barfing up Denny’s, next time dine at Olive Garden where you can take advantage of their Taste of Tuscany specialty menu.

As far as your apartment is concerned, break your lease tonight and move into the nearest penthouse.

If you can’t afford the rent, pimp out a few strippers until you’ve got the cash to purchase a Party Boat, fill it with margaritas and more strippers and buy as many boxes of Magnums as your Prius will hold.

This will enable you to party serious, pay your rent and have the free time to practice 69ing

    Next question, please

we had a discussion about NT on 3/31/12 Wheeler blog entry and Desmond Bryant was compared to Dallas’ Jay Ratliff by someone, maybe SeymourBush. It was a good discussion, not going to repeat it here.

We have a lot of talented players, poor execution and production, and maybe a situation comparable to the one Allen improved in Denver.

expect new coaching staff to start utilizing talented players.

    Multiple = Multiple

defensive football you can have anything from an 11 man front to a 0 man front and change it all up before the snap. Multi-talented players can be well utilized by creative coaches

Jay Ratliff 6′4 287 and Desmond Bryant 6′5 290 look a lot alike.

Now he still needs to learn how to play like him, but if Bryant and Houston develop we should be ok inside.

Ratliff is lean (for a NT) and strong, able to play the run and the pass, both Houston and Bryant have that kind of potential, but it’s time to take their game to the next level.

That’s why I want to move Bryant and Houston inside now.

Share a DT spot between Seymour and Kelly and the other one between Bryant and Houston, by 2013 these two should be the starting tandem and they need playing time inside now so we can find out if they’re up for it.

We need to get another DE to start on the left side for Houston, I’m not taking about an All-Pro either, a FA like William Hayes would be ok or maybe a rookie can come up and do the job, since the guy filling that LDE spot would not see as many snaps as the other guys and Houston/Bryant would spell him too.

Wheeler~ It’s a defensive head coach, he has a defensive mind, I wanted to come to a place that would take defense a little more serious.

It’s been a long time since the Raider defense was feared. Time to bring the nasty back!

The Raider “defense” was so bad it seemed that 1st and 2nd down were just practice; an opportunity to try something new or take some risks just for fun… knowing that they always had 3rd down to do a “real” play and move the chains easily if they needed it. Sometimes Raiders would luck out and make a stop by some miracle. The opposing offense would make a mistake, drop a pass etc.

My point is that ANYTIME the opposition really needed to move the ball…they DID.

I think it’s mistake for guys here to say that it was the coaching; that we have these great, talented guys that were just being badly coached.

True. No doubt we had sub par coaching (at best) on defense, but we shouldn’t exonerate guys like Seymour- who was supposed to be our leader and couldn’t even get his boys to man up and make a stop to save their lives.

I remember TK yelling at a sideline reporter as he was jogging into the tunnel after the KC game at Arrowhead and saying “big time players make big time plays” in reference to Seymours fg blocks that saved the game and I thought “where were his big time plays ANY OTHER time of the year?

Kudos to Seymour for saving that game but he was NOWHERE to be found when we needed him against Detroit or SD.

If we play a 3-4 we need a true NT and more LBs but it would look something like this
    DE- Seymour,Kelly,Houston,Bryant
    NT- (Unknown)
    OLB- Curry,Shaughnessy…
    Ilb McClain, Wheeler…

Shaughnessy could definitely switch to an OLB in a 3-4 since he played some in college.Wheeler could move inside since he lacks size to be a 3-4 OLB, he’s more of a 4-3 OLB.
    ==========================================

I said awhile ago you would put Desmond Bryant at the nose. He is not completely optimal, but he is probably better at the position that most of you would believe. Bob Marley posted an interesting article from PFF of something that I have been saying for quite some time: the new proto type nose guard or NT is more athletic and has pass rush abilities, not the giant blocking consuming behemoths of the past.
    [[[[[[[[[[[[[[[[[[[[[[[[[[[[[[[[[[[[[[[[[[[[[[[[[[

The NT has to be a behemoth so that he can take up all the blocks because if he doesn’t the LBs are going to get blocked, I rather have pass rushing LBs who are quicker getting to the QB than DL who are usually slower. I’m just saying if you want a pass rushing tackle then advocate for a 4-3 not a 3-4.

(Also Jay Ratliff moved to NT after Jason Ferguson became injured so it was more out of necessity and is the current lone exception to the rule. Look around the league most NTs are big stumps.)

  98. Marley Bob Says:

As far as the Draft goes, Clemson’s TE Dwayne Allen is one player I really like, but he won’t be available at 95th, at least he’s not supposed to.

So, I’ll name a couple of players that intrigue me, none of them project as 3rd round picks:

Texas LB Emmanuel Acho 6′2 238, probably can be had with our 4th but may rise, I think he’s at least worth considering at 95:

    - Really like this kid, athletic, good size, smarts, bloodlines and intangibles, I think he’s really underrated.

From cbs.com and the national football post:

“Isn’t a dynamic straight-line athlete, but plays faster because of instincts.

Is a good tackler, can shed blocks and plays stronger than his frame would indicate.

Has the versatility to play a number of spots in a 4-3 scheme or get some looks inside in a 34. Looks like a potential starter in the NFL either way.”

“Acho has the same strong character and production his brother [Sam, a 2011 fourth-round pick] did coming into last year’s draft process, but Sam fell a bit in the draft because scouts weren’t sure if his best NFL fit was as a 4-3 end or 3-4 linebacker.

There’s no question with Emmanuel, whose athleticism and versatility should make him a top 100 pick for 4-3 teams as a chase second-level defender.”

    —————————————————-

    - Tennessee’s DE Malik Jackson 6′4 284, may be worth a 4th or 5th, could drop to 6th:

This kid is more of a gamable, but has potential and versatility, keep in mind his evaluations come as an out of position 270 pound DT last season and he still made 2nd team All-SEC, anyway he projects as an End in the NFL, a LDE in a 4-3 I would say.

He comes from McKenzie’s school so I’m sure he can find out if the guy is worth a look.

Some bits from cns.com and nfp.com:

“Impression: A great looking athlete. Has some real work to do from a technique standpoint and is playing out of position at Tennessee. However, has a lot of upside as a DE both in a 43 and 34 front in the NFL and looks like a really intriguing developmental defensive lineman at this stage with a good bit up upside long term.”

“The 6-5 Jackson weighed in at 284 pounds in Indianapolis a few weeks ago but added six pounds since. Despite the added bulk, according to a source at the workout, Jackson showed good athleticism in defensive line drills run by a member of the New Orleans Saints.

The fact that he’s steadily improved while adding weight and appears to have the frame even more mass is sure to intrigue scouts. Some believe that because of his height and relatively long arms (33 3/4″) he’s a natural candidate as a developmental 3-4 defensive end.

Jackson is a highly-cut athlete with a versatile skill-set and saw time inside and outside in college, but looks more natural as an end. He played 95 percent of his snaps at tackle for the Volunteers, which limited his effectiveness and production playing out of position.

Jackson showed steady improvement over his career and his best football looks to be ahead of him – Tennessee coaches rave about his ability.”

Bryant, Ok i can live with that decision..even though id say that is still out of position

As for Kelly or Seymour “run defender” isnt the nickname I would give them for their performance in 2011 especially as a LDE in a 4-3

Rockstar, put me down for Emmanuel Acho at 95th.

At least until I find a guy I like better, I’m not finished looking.

But back to Acho, I’ve seen him projected anywhere from 2nd to 6th, but I see a guy that can come in right away and provide depth at every LB spot while pushing the starters for their jobs and eventually taking over one of them.

Not bad for the last pick of the third round.

But I can agree that there are other players with a higher ceiling but also more bust potentia and in this particular year without a full slate of picks, we have to make them count.

    @ alzadoX

who do you think we could/should get at #95 ??

    ******

I don’t have time to watch college games, so I can’t give a name of a player we should draft. Many years ago, I did a little college scouting for a guy who wrote draft guides, Joel Buchsbaum (with Pro Football Weekly and did his own independent guide before joining PFW). I do know what it takes to actually get an independent informed decision on college prospects and I don’t have time or sufficient interest anymore. I still like to read draft guides from a few years back and see who made it and who didn’t. A lot of guys rated highly don’t make it, but most Pro Bowlers are high picks. I watch the Raider games and a few NFL highlights that’s about it. I watch the preseason games (after the subs start playing) several times to get a good look at our young players.

With new coaching staff and schemes, we have less knowledge of what kind of players will fit, less informed ability to guess what exactly the new Reggime will be looking for. Reggie Mac has rep as excellent evaluator. No one hits on all their draft picks over time.

New Reggime has filled gaping holes so that they will not be unduly influenced into reaching in draft to fill a hole, but competition and depth needed almost everywhere on team. Realistically, on picks later than round 2, need usually will factored in rather than pure BPA drafting, but if you narrow it down to only one or a few positions, you are still likely to make mistakes. But few teams make late round selections at positions where they are loaded. Usually, for teams that have many needs, it is better to trade down in the draft rather than up, with more chances you usually get more hits, whereas that one guy you were so sure about often looks different in camp than he did in college.

Primary needs; some could be filled by developing talent already on roster, and bringing more players in to compete:

OLB/ LB(s) who can rush the passer; Also from what I can tell Allen likes LB who can cover pass

CB who projects as starting calibre; depth is okay (note: I think Ron Bartell excellent if healthy)

NT/DT who can stuff the run (Potential sleepers on roster: Travis Ivey per beat writers, I haven’t seen him play.) Good chance Lamarr Houston plays inside more in 2012, some have suggested Desmond Bryant. In Denver’s 4-3 hybrid D, Broderick Bunkley listed as DT but lined up on center’s nose (4-3 nose tackle), strong anchor guy but also played on move some, Houston may be closest we have to that, but probably not as strong vs. run as Bunkley)

ILB maybe a vet who can push Romac rather than draftee. If we use a 3-4, I think Curry may move to ILB

Edge rusher situational if not starting LB or heavy rotation LB; situational rush DE or LB

RB backup power runner for short yardage, goalline runner also play special teams (potential sleepers on roster: Lonyae Miller, Rashawn Jackson)

QB backup – probably a vet if new Reggime likes Terrelle Pryor, if new Reggime doesn’t like Pryor, then a QB to groom for future

Possession / Red zone WR (potential sleeper on roster: Eddie McGee. Ausberry may even play in red zone WR if he isn’t starting TE. )

TE who is red zone threat at minimum, preferably complete TE (potential sleeper on roster: Ausberry). Reece will probably be used more as receiver.

Those are primary needs; 3rd round pick will probably be BPA at any of these positions of need

    also may need:

Punt returner – Denarius Moore still learning how to return punts. Taiwan Jones mostly KOR in college. Jacoby Ford may be used more here.

FS depth/ special teams players (have a lot of players on roster who I haven’t seen yet)

OG & C depth maybe but this is one of easier and cheaper things to find (potential sleepers on roster: 2 year practice squadder Alex Parsons is well suited to ZBS and was being tried at center late last preseason, can play both guards should push hard for roster spot. T-G Zach Hurd if he fits ZBS).

OT depth if Barksdale doesn’t fit ZBS – I don’t understand why some say OL is one of our primary needs, I’d say one of our strengths. Khalif Barnes needs competition to be pushed to play to his potential and keep his head in the game, but I agree with his re-signing) (potential sleeper on roster: T-G Zach Hurd, if he fits ZBS)

Like what new Reggime is doing. Still have draft/trades, rookie UDFAs, June 1st cuts and late market/ bargain free agents. Expect a lot of value/ budget players to be brought in to compete at unsettled positions, especially on defense.

Said it before and I’ll say it again — Reggie is in the best possible position he could be in. Starting from scratch, basically, without the domineering presence of Al on Draft Day, there is no chance of misfiring on a first round pick (since the Raiders don’t have one). Already gotten rid of some people who didn’t belong, and brought in some talent for needed depth and performance — hope that all equates to elevated play and better fundamentals (i.e., fewer penalties). Let’s see what the scouting team determines as being the “best available” players when the Raiders’ selections roll around. Would like to see a potential move up the draft board, in middle rounds, but I am willing to place my trust in Reggie to make it all work out …

So Kentucky wins it all last night? Wow, that’s a surprise…

  121. RaiderRockstar Says:

LB Travis Goethel is ready to get back into off-season workouts after sitting out last year with a knee injury. “I feel good,” said Goethel. “I’m just ready to get after it. Last year it was a long year for me, just sitting there watching everything go down. I’m just excited to get back in the mix and start playing football again.”
Goethel feels comfortable with the new coaching staff after meeting them for the first time. “Today is the first day that I’ve actually met with them face to face and they all seem like cool dudes and they all want to get after it just like we do.”
The players have set goals for themselves as well as the team and are using these workouts and meetings as a first step in reaching those goals. “My goal right now is to get out and contribute as much as I can, whether it’s on defense or special teams, just get out there and help this team out as much as I can,” said Goethel.

  125. hwnrdr Says:

If McFadden can stay healthy the whole season and be the force he was for the first 6 games last year…he gets my MUP too!

  126. raidertbone Says:

Interesting that T.O. has been working out with CP3 – did anyone else notice that? There may just be a roster spot available for a veteran wide receiver, who would probably like nothing more than to stick it to the Bay Area critics on the other side of the “short pond”!

  127. hwnrdr Says:

That could be a possibility Tbone, but…not sure if we need someone like TO’s attitude…

  130. hwnrdr Says:

That is true…TO, like Moss has something to prove, like Moss…

  131. raidertbone Says:

If T.O. would be willing to sign just a one-year contract, it might be worth bringing him in. He’s always been a hard worker – that might rub off on the younger receivers. If he becomes a cancer or a distraction, or Reggie doesn’t think he’s productive enough, he’s GONE. However, at this stage of his career, i really think T.O. wants to go out on a positive note. I never would’ve said “Bring him in” before now — maybe changing my tune, a little!

    @Tbone

Owens has plenty of experience with both Greg Knapp & Carson Palmer. I think if both guys lobby hard to sign him, he’ll be a Raider

it’s hard to argue that we DON’T need a proven veteran receiver, especially if he’s one of the all-time greats at the position, he’s hungry, healthy and will accept the vet minimum as compensation.. seems like a no brainer to me [especially since Heyward-Bey, Ford, Murphy & Moore all battled injuries at some point last season]

The thing about Denver is – they didn’t even WANT Tebow really, until he started winning (and we all know that was ALL HIM – right?! :) Anyway, on their blog, they said they would superimpose scoreboard images of past games … go right ahead: Raiders have won 4 out of the last 6, including a certain 59-14 beatdown!! Gloat on, you horse-tooth patsies!

  180. raidertbone Says:

I see at least two linebackers getting drafted — I think the rest is totally based on “best available”. Tight end is very thin this year – I just don’t see it. Perhaps a veteran FA pickup would be best served at the TE position.

  181. R8drinOK Says:

Just say NO to TO. Guy is a loser and a cancer, we can get a FA WR later if needed. If we want a veteran presence let’s go with TE Dallas Clark!

  183. raidertbone Says:

I’d say Clark would be a good one to go after!

  184. J-Raider Says:

    @181,

ILB Mychal Kendricks, Cal: Of the six players listed in this report, if Kendricks scores as poorly on the Wonderlic as I’ve been told scouts expect based on his struggles on the white board during team interviews, his stock could drop significantly. Teams hold inside linebackers to a higher standard than many other positions when it comes to intelligence.

I will have to get back to you. Could be the 24th, 25th or 27th the way it is looking right now.

No to Jackson. Kicked off Tenn for failed drug tests.

    Robert Blanton ran a 4.7, I’ll pass.

    Menzie seems a little small.

    ===============

    No perfect prospects at #95.

Blanton may not have a blazing 40 time, but he has field speed. Good instincts, a little too stiff to stay at corner but at the very least can play press-man when needed. High character kid. Solid tackler. Nose for the ball.

Jackson was a 1st round prospect before getting kicked off the team. Do the Raiders think their locker room is strong enough to keep him grounded? As a 5th round pick, wouldn’t be hard to cut ties with him if off-field issues become a problem. Low-risk, high reward.

Menzie is a CB, but has enough size and range for FS. His frame would allow him to add a little weight if necessary, but I don’t think he’s so undersized that it would be a problem for him. Could contribute early in nickel packages.

  218. YoungAmerican Says:

I should say, no perfect prospects AFTER #95. Blanton, Jackson, and Menzie will be in play anywhere between the 4th and 6th rounds.

  219. Just Fire Baby Says:

So to the semi’s, and especially my scouting department, where do we think this Travis Benjamin kid from the U will go?

I know he doesn’t have size on his side, but when I watched the U play, he at times seemed like the best player on the field.

I am hoping he can be a 5th or 6th round option.

  220. raidertbone Says:

I still think there are a lot of talented players out there who are currently on other rosters, but only for now …

  221. SR Raider Says:

Rockstar – I don’t follow the lower rounds of the draft that closely. Tend to trust the scouting dept and coaches. So my pick is the best LB available at #95

  222. J Hill Says:

    Can’t do the 27th, JFB.

  223. 8RaiderReign8 Says:

With the #95 pick in the 2012 draft the Raiders pick…..

    Josh Chapman… Dt Alabama

The Raiders make this pick for two reasons
    1) A true nose tackle is something this team desperately needs… And Reggie has a history of picking a true nose tackle when you look at BJ Raji
    2) Getting a true nose tackle makes Kelly and Seymour much more expendable next year when we have to reanalyze their contracts
    3) Josh Chapman will fall to us because he is injured… And players that are injured usually fall to later rounds

  224. J Hill Says:

As a 5th round pick, wouldn’t be hard to cut ties with him if off-field issues become a problem. Low-risk, high reward.

    ———————————————————–

Agreed. But to much of a risk for a 3rd rd pick.

Of the list, I’d roll with Menzie in rd 3, but I’m thinking I might be able to find a better player HWS wise, with a high football IQ, but is not rated high because of who he played against.

    ==========

Yeah, that’s entirely possible. I don’t have a ton of players like that listed simply because I don’t get much of a chance, if any, to see small-school kids play. With those, it’s usually a situation where the organization’s scouts will want to work the kid out and check him out in person.

  248. RaiderRockstar Says:

are people going to change their votes if we sign Tollefson?

    ***

    @SR

it’s possible. you can change your vote up thru April 25th

  249. YoungAmerican Says:

I think Massaquoi will be on the board later than that.

Personally, I’m not entirely sold on him. Not convinced about his lateral agility. Seems like a tweener type. Not a real DE, nor is he a real OLB. He’s been very productive, though, so I wouldn’t be surprised if he could carve out a niche for himself in the NFL.

  250. raidertbone Says:

Chapman, Ta’amu and Kendricks are all off the board already, according to Walter’s mock (for what it’s worth); but, we don’t know who is gonna rise and who is gonna fall between now and the actual pick(s).

  251. Marks hair Says:

Remember all the guys predicting Yates to the raiders in rd 6-7…. you cant predict 94 picks.. Ill take the best player on the board, any position.. He most likely will only work sp teams this yr anyway.

  252. YoungAmerican Says:

He most likely will only work sp teams this yr anyway.

    —————

The GM seems to think you can find a productive starter at #95.

  253. YoungAmerican Says:

The reason why, even if Ta’amu is there at #95, I wouldn’t pick him…

… he’s a two-down player, and even at that not a very productive one. He’s not a pure run-stuffer. Actually plays a more penetrating style. Would have to develop as a 0-tech. At this point would only be a rotational guy.

With so few draft picks? Whoever the Raiders get at #95 should be able to contribute right off the bat. I don’t think Ta’amu is that guy, particularly if the Raiders will only be using 3 DL formations less than half of the time.

  254. hwnrdr Says:

What’s up Mike? Doing good this morning…

  255. SR Raider Says:

I agree with Marks Hair when it comes to the draft. Take the best player at #95; either DT or LB.

When it comes to fashion Marks Hair needs some help

  256. Marks hair Says:

    252. I agree with reg. You can find a starter in rd 4. But how many yr 1 starters get taken after rd 3? Probably not too many.. Al was great picking late, but he didnt get late rd starters all the time.

  257. YoungAmerican Says:

#95 absolutely needs to be BPA. No telling who that will be or at what position. But it needs to be a guy who can contribute right off the bat, a guy who will take minimal development and at least has the potential to be a game-changer.

  258. qodrn1 Says:

To see the new Seahawk uniforms, go here.

I think Raider fans should be VERY concerned.

Is it really necessary to have NIKE symbols all over the Uni?

  259. raidertbone Says:

Tyrone Crawford (DT, Boise State) would give us an added pass rusher at the #95 spot – if he’s still there. He might not start – but it would be someone good who Seymour could help groom.

  260. YoungAmerican Says:

    My big board again:

3rd – NT Josh Chapman, Alabama; OLB Ronnell Lewis, Oklahoma; OLB/ILB Sean Spence, Miami; CB Leonard Johnson, Iowa State; OLB/DE Bruce Irvin, West Virginia; ILB James Michael-Johnson, Nevada; DE Tyrone Crawford, Boise State

4th – OLB Sammy Brown, Houston; FS Janzen Jackson, McNeese State; OT Jeff Allen, Illinois; DE/OLB Jonathan Massaquoi, Troy; ILB/OLB Nigel Bradham, Florida State; OLB Keenan Robinson, Texas; DE/OLB Jake Bequette, Arkansas

5th – DL Akiem Hicks, Regina; DE/OLB Cordarro Law, Southern Miss; DB DeQuan Menzie, Alabama; DE/OLB Julian Miller, West Virginia; NT Damon Harrison, William Penn; CB Asa Jackson, Cal Poly-SLO

5th – DB Robert Blanton, Notre Dame; DE/OLB Frank Alexander, Oklahoma; RB Tauren Poole, Tennessee; OLB/ILB Miles Burris, San Diego State; OT Steven Baker, ECU; ILB/OLB Emmanuel Acho, Texas; RB Terrance Ganaway, Baylor

6th – OT Matt Reynolds, BYU; NT Nicolas Jean-Baptiste, Baylor; CB Coty Sensabaugh, Clemson; DE/OLB Brandon Lindsey, Pitt; CB Cliff Harris, Oregon; NT Hebron Fangupo, BYU; WR A.J. Jenkins, Illinois

    =====

Once again, this isn’t where I think each of these players will go. This is where I have each of these players rated. Meaning, I wouldn’t touch Cliff Harris before the 6th round, though he might get picked earlier. Or, a guy like Jake Bequette might very well still be available late in the 5th round, which would make him a great value pick for the Raiders at that point in the draft.

  261. YoungAmerican Says:

I think Raider fans should be VERY concerned.

    ============

Why? They didn’t change the Raiders uniforms. The changes to the uniforms for the other 31 teams were minimal at best.

    wassup brother

  297. Plunketthead Says:

Heres another april fools blogger. Everyone loves to sucker punch us. But this one is funny. I didnt realize it was joke untill I read the Javon walker stuff

    1. Josh Robinson.

Robinson ran a 4.33 forty-yard-dash at the NFL’s scouting combine (which was the fastest) and played cornerback at Central Florida during his collegiate playing days. Robinson is currently projected to be a third round pick so the Raiders may be able to grab him at 95th overall.

    2. Travis Benjamin.

Benjamin ran the second-fastest forty-time at the NFL’s scouting combine at 4.36 seconds and played wide receiver in Miami. The Raiders love fast receivers and have been looking for a game-changer at the position since Javon Walker left in 2009.

    3. Stephen Hill.

Benjamin wasn’t the only receiver that ran a 4.36 at the combine, as Georgia Tech’s Stephen Hill tied for the second-fastest forty-yard-dash time last February. A speedy wide receiver duo of Benjamin and Hill — two possible future Hall of Famers — could go down as the Raiders’ best receiving corps in franchise history. Look for Oakland to try and draft both players using 2013 and 2014 picks to trade back into the draft.

    4. Chris Owusu.

Benjamin and Hill weren’t the only two receivers that ran a 4.36 forty-yard-dash at the combine, Stanford’s Chris Owusu (gosh darn, that’s a name for ya) also ran a 4.36. With all three receivers turning in fantastic times, Oakland will look to target them in the draft. Can you say best trio of receivers in franchise history?

    5. A.J. Jenkins

Illinois wide receiver A.J. Jenkins ran the sixth-best forty-yard-dash at the combine, coming in at 4.39 seconds. All four of the receivers mentioned here (save Jenkins) are projected to be drafted late in the draft, so the Raiders will probably only have to trade their 3rd, 4th, 5th, 6th and 7th round 2013 selections to grab them. Coming away with the four fastest receivers in the draft — and the fastest player in the draft, Josh Robinson — the Raiders may have the best 2012 draft class among all thirty-two teams.

    =======================

The league is just using a new vendor. There is a new material for the collar, a material that stretches more for the jersey, and a new waterproof material for the pants.

No different than when then NFL switched to Reebok and the design stayed the same. The uniforms will look the same as they always have. The “Combat” and “Conquest” uniform designs were a hoax – concept drawings by an independent artist.
