Cowboys, Raiders preseason on MNF

By Jerry McDonald - NFL Writer
Wednesday, April 4th, 2012 at 1:25 pm in Oakland Raiders.

The Raiders will open the preseason at home against the Dallas Cowboys on Monday night, Aug. 13, at 5 p.m. the club announced Wednesday.

The Week 2 through 4 preseason games do not have specific dates affixed as yet. Oakland travels to Arizona in Week 2, hosts Detroit in Week 4 and finishes the preseason in Seattle.

The annual game against the 49ers is off for the foreseeable future because of violence that took place in last season’s game at Candlestick Park.

I don’t hunt….well I did once and I shot a duck….it was so pretty, and I did not enjoy it….but, hunting serves multiple purposes in our society. It brings together fathers and children (would say sons, but you leftist people would throw a fit), it keeps the population of certain predators down (in our area it is mountain lions), and it provides a source of food to families and revenue to many States.

Is hunting really that much worse than the slaughter of cattle, and pigs in a slaughterhouse which then people like Madden Raider (Sully) devour on a daily basis at Carl’s Jr.?

Former policemen in Katrina bridge shootings jailed

Five former New Orleans police officers who shot six unarmed African American civilians, two fatally, on a bridge in the wake of Hurricane Katrina have been jailed.

The prison terms range from six to 65 years for the shootings on the Danziger Bridge in September 2005.

Four of the officers were found guilty of firearms offences and the fifth was jailed for helping the cover-up.

The officers planted a gun and fabricated witnesses and false reports to make the shootings appear justified.

Robert Faulcon, 48, received the longest sentence of 65 years; Kenneth Bowen, 38, and Robert Gisevius, 39, received 40 years each; and Anthony Villavaso, 35, was sentenced to 38 years in prison.

Retired Sgt Arthur Kaufman, 55, the officer who was assigned to investigate the shootings, received a six-year prison sentence for helping to co-ordinate the cover-up.

    *****

The whole preseason is real football. Most years the real football doesn’t start until the second quarter when the scrubs start fighting for roster spots and the serious competition for unsettled starting spots picks up.

This year with the new Reggime and coaches and systems, its real football right from the first kickoff with the David Ausberrys, Mike Goodsons, and Pat Lees through the end of the game when we’ll get to see if the Travis Iveys to the Goethels, the Lonyae Millers to the Eddie McGees, the Alex Parsons to the Zach Hurds, the Carl Ihenachos to the Mason Brodines, the Brandon Underwoods to the Terrail Lamberts, and all the new players are part of the Raiders’ future.

You impressed me with your connection thesis earlier but then lost me here with the hunting. Hunters actually are often very connected to the whole ecology and the whole hunt thing is to regulate the population so there will not be a crash in game because of a bad winter or something. There is a sustainable balance that goes on with most of them. Most support limits and research to figure out what is sustainable. Much of this allowable hunt is to make up for losses in predators or other imbalances. Hunters for most part very connected with what is going on with the animals they hunt. Poachers excepted. They often are the most outspoken environmentalists (for good or bad). I say this as a non-hunter who used to work for a State Fish and Wildlife agency.

The whole dehumanization of and disconnection with other people is what allows other people to rationalize monstrous behavior against others.

    Hardline,

should you be kicked out of your well-being for being inept? or did your genius flee on it’s own?
    $$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$

    Lonetree,

I am not sure I understand your question. I believe AD’s genius fled due to old age, and once that happened that genius was unredeemable – could never return. At that point AD should have stepped down, and turned over operations to others.

The Chinese have a wise and interesting adage: “The father who lives too long has no obedient son.”

People accuse me of being a hater which is wrong; in the glory days from 1970 through 1990 AD was my hero. But after that enough was enough, the bright flower faded and once AD essentially canned Gruden, I became a disbeliever.

Now, however, is a new day, of competence and savvyness: genius might even emerge, again, and only time will tell.

It’s a great day to be a Raider, fan, and/or part of the Nation.

For the record, Hardline — It wasn’t me who brought it up…somebody asked you who you were, and you tried to skip the fact you had to change your name because of the racism. It wasn’t due to your hatred of Al…as you tried to tell everybody in here. So, when trying to impress the “new guy,” at least tell the complete story.
    $$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$

    Hayes,

This blog does not comprise my life. You say:

“somebody asked you who you were, and you tried to skip the fact you had to change your name because of the racism”

Presently I am watching the old TV series “Stargate Atlantis” on DVD, in between dueling with you on here. I don’t hang on every single post.

Kelly, have you ever seen unforgivable blackness: the rise and fall of jack Johnson? Netflix it.
    $$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$

Hardline: “Great documentary by Ken Burns, one of his best, with only the “The Civil War” being better.”

BTW, if I am soooooo racist why is “Unforgivable Blackness” one of my favorite films and Jack Johnson one of my favorite athletes and icons representing the fight against racism??

You understand little about subtleties. Try to compare Hue, the Pimpin Magnificient, and genius McClain to Jack Johnson…….lie to the fans, the nation, spit in our faces, and it’s fine with you. They aren’t on the same level with Jack Johnson and don’t deserve to be in the NFL. If you don’t like my words, then take a hike.

Put down the bottle and the pipe my friend…..

    Calm down.

  446. HayesDaze37 Says:

DMC’s more spectacular, for sure. Ray Rice is a churnin’ machine, though.

Rice wants O-U-T out of Baltimore…he doesn’t like that Franchise Tag at all, and he is rightfully insulted by the Ravens.

It says here Ray Rice is on the block…even if the Ravens deny it, leading up to the draft.

  447. HayesDaze37 Says:

What about the racist comments you made, Hardline? Stop conveniently leaving out your hate and bigotry, and I’ll stop digging-up your own racist words. Keep flailing away…you’ve revealed yourself once more.

  448. bigsnow81 Says:

Ray rice is solid, but IMO ride McFadden and if he fails. Move on

  449. Raider O Says:

McFadden is more talented than Rice, but he can’t stay healthy. Talent is not enough in the NFL. Durability is a huge factor too.

  450. bigsnow81 Says:

Gholston was a workout warrior and bust. Thought al would draft him. I wanted desean Jackson and he was on the board for a while.

  451. HayesDaze37 Says:

Hate to say it…but, hearing between the lines, I believe DMC’s foot is STILL injured. If so, “we” are a
    already screwed.

The Raiders MUST be prepared for their #2 RB to take a larger role…it’s why I think we bring in one more vet RB before the season starts.

  452. Raider O Says:

Look at Chaz. The guy is very talented, but he is not successful so far, and that is due to his durability issues. According to Cork & Jerry, he was out best WR, but he couldn’t stay healthy to earn more snaps and playing time. Coaches can’t depend on a guy that can’t stay healthy.

  471. HayesDaze37 Says:

First up in the morning (East Coast) – Good Mornin’ Nation! Let me start off the banter by saying that I hope DMac makes it back onto the field this season and can sustain it. I hear all the debate between him vs. Rice — my “take” is that the Raiders had to decide early whether #20 or Bush would be the guy they would hitch their wagons to. They made their decision; now, they just have to bring in quality backups, and roll with it.

  481. raidertbone Says:

    $5.65 million this year;
    $5.85 million next year (last year of his deal);
    Only Adrian Peterson and Chris Johnson make more money than DMac at the running back spot;
If he gets injured again, that could be a high price to swallow – again … I think both he and the Raiders organization are acutely aware of that, going into this season.

  493. guest123 Says:

That’s what they said about Mike Vick, Plaxico Burress, etc. The NFL will forgive and forget once Williams does his time. Goodell will eventually say that enough’s enough. GW will get a shot to be at the very least “involved” as a consultant one day.

  494. guest123 Says:

    #492,

yeah, I am fired up to see it myself.

  495. Just Fire Baby Says:

Williams is too old and NOT THAT GOOD, to be given a real second chance.

He is done, and that is ridiculous.

No wonder they got caught, there was probably some guys in that locker room, who were on another team before and heading into FA this offseason, and was like Fck this prick, trying to force us to hurt other players.

  496. Just Fire Baby Says:

There is a difference from wanting big, tough, physical, fast defensive play. Our new HC is going to be screaming for that.

It is a whole another thing, to try to get your players to go for the head in a pile, and talk about blowing out guys ACL’s and stuff.

  497. raidertbone Says:

Gregg Williams just got caught saying what lots of other coaches say in locker rooms all the time. Most of the players simply hear “Blah, blah, blah …” What I would like to know is who the scum was who taped a locker room pep talk and felt the need to make it public — THAT’s the guy who should be roasted, i/m/o!!

  498. guest123 Says:

Williams is too old and NOT THAT GOOD, to be given a real second chance.

    ***********

Now that may be the case right there. But if the NFL has showed time and time again, if you have talent, they don’t really care about past transgressions.

GW’s probably done because it’s going to be difficult to trust his judgment on anything. His moral code is warped, and all the “I’m sorry’s” in the world won’t change anything.

But if he is in fact a coaching commodity that can mentor a young DC with his many years of “X’s and O’s”, he could be of service to someone. I don’t think any moral compass will be used to keep him from a job. It would ultimately be his talent or lack of it.

  499. Mark Clemens Says:

How is that any different from MMA? Boxing? I’m sure it happens a lot in soccer too. The nature of the game and high stakes in terms of money leads people to succomb to their weaknesses and they lower the bar of sportsmanship to win at any costs.

And if you want to call out GW for it, I am sure that he is not an outlier by any means. The other coaches in the NFL that see what is going on are breathing a sigh of relief it wasn’t them that was caught, and Goodell has sent his message to them. I think it’s hypocrisy to judge GW/Saints as the only culprit.

Also, am glad to see it was the NFL’s feel good poster child franchise they took down, so there’s no way they can say that Goodell “had it in for them”

  519. Mark Clemens Says:

Leo is a great actor. Some people still think he is the teen heart throb from Titanic. Get over it. That was 15 years ago. Shutter Island, Inception, Departed, Revolutionary Road, are all very good movies.

Shutter Island was really good, IMO.

You watch it a second-time, and pick up all kinds of weird tidbits.

  521. Just Fire Baby Says:

I think it’s curious that Goodell decided on an “indefinite” suspension. Had he banned him for life, it may have opened up a lawsuit. But GW accepted his suspension without a fight, and I think maybe in the hope that Goodell lifts it after some period of time that only Goodell and GW actually know. I don’t think that GW would have accepted the penalty of “indefinite” without actually knowing what that meant.

  523. Mark Clemens Says:

JFB, I’m sure other coaches said the same things. But, the Saints were arrogant and continued their bounty system after the NFL opened an investigation. How stupid can you be. 525. Just Fire Baby Says:

Good points G123, but I think it is a tad different for players and coaches, in that Williams needs to have a job first before he can really start to appeal anything, and doesn’t have as deep as pockets to fight it as the players and the PA.

He probably will just go down to the college ranks, and go work for Les Miles before he starts taking on the league over a 150K a year consultant gig.

  526. guest123 Says:

What amazes me is that through it all, Drew Brees is still the “good guy”, the Nyquil pitchman, the hero to post-Katrina New Orleans who took led them to their first Super Bowl.

Last year, the networks were hanging off of Brees nuts, broadcasting his personally led OTA’s and his work in the community.

There is no way, absolutely no way that Drew Brees shared the same sideline and didn’t hear the defensive players yapping about winning money after a hit. He was complicit in it and the fact he didn’t say or do anything to me makes him just as culpable.

  527. Just Fire Baby Says:

And Drew is playing the stupid card, saying he knew nothing the whole time.

  544. raiderjhawk Says:

I’ll tell you who I want the Raiders to take witht he 95th pick… THE BEST PLAYER LEFT AT THE TOP OF THEIR BOARD!

I don’t know about you guys but I just feel a lot safer with the draft now. One of my buddies is a Bears fan and I remember the year we drafted DHB with our first pick, we also took Mitchell extremely high as well. My buddy called me after every Raiders pick and laughed at me, he said he couldn’t believe the guys we were drafting… I don’t think that’s going to happen anymore. I trust that Reggie will take the best football players available and not reach for prospects.

  545. RaidO Says:

If some people on here think Williams should brought up on charges then DA should get some sort of suspension.

  546. raidertbone Says:

I don’t think we’ll ever see a guy like DHB picked ever again, that high (at least, not by the Raiders)

    @ jhawk

give me the name of a player YOU would like to see the Raiders draft at #95 please

  548. guest123 Says:

I know there are some homers out there who all they can do is yap about the Raiders being great no mattter what and they show no sense of reality.

And there are some others who are all doom and gloom and say the Raiders are in rebuilding mode.

I think Reggie McKenzie is putting together a team that has a fighting chance to be good. It will take a lot of work, some luck, good health, a lot of things. I’m not a doom & gloomer, but it’s a tall order to be good in the first year of the new regime. But I sense we will be taking 2 steps forward and 1 step back, instead of 2 steps forward and 2 or 3 steps back like in previous Al Davis led regimes.

This ship is going in the right direction, and it may take some time to get where we are going, but the naysayers and doom and gloomers will eat their words or shut up and jump on the bandwagon later.

  549. raidertbone Says:

Chuck Bresnahan, as a defensive coach? Nah, he’s too offensive!

  550. RaiderRockstar Says:

Reggie would have drafted Heyward-Bey in Round 3 if he was still available … certainly not Top 10

but who is to say Al Davis was wrong? DHB gets better every year. He was a very raw player when we first got him. Year #4 should be pretty special for him

  551. raidertbone Says:

At the #95 pick, I am starting to hear the name of Nigel Bradham come up – he’s an outside linebacker, with starting potential.

  552. hwnrdr Says:

Dennis Allen was there, yes, but was he still there after the league told them to stop doing it? I think that is where Goodell is acting on…just asking…

  553. raidertbone Says:

DHB … with B.J. Raji and Brian Orakpo both on the board — I rest my case!

  554. guest123 Says:

If RoMac had DHB’s motor, he’d be special.

  555. hwnrdr Says:

    Orakpoed…another word for sack!

  556. raidertbone Says:

RoMac was actually the first guy that I had slated for the Raiders to pick in the first round and it actually happened — first time in about 10 years. Now, he hasn’t lived up to (yet) what I had hoped he would, but I am hoping he can come in fresh this year, free from distractions and benefit from a new system that will work better with his skill set. I am looking for big things out of both him and Curry.

  557. guest123 Says:

I’ll give DHB a lot of credit for busting his tail out there. If he fails to acheive his potential, it won’t be for lack of effort. If we had 52 others with his motor….

  558. raiderjhawk Says:

The knock on Bradham is that he is slow to read plays (sounds like another LB that we drafted last year). He is a hitter and a sure tackler, I just don’t know how his transition to the NFL will be. I imagine we could probably do worse then him in the 3rd though.

  559. RaidO Says:

Yeah it was all about the DHB Crabtree debate. I think DHB is or will be a better WR in the long run. He does get better every year.

  560. raiderjhawk Says:

I’m glad we didn’t draft Craptree, that guy is such a little girl it’s not even funny. What has he done in the NFL?

  561. hwnrdr Says:

I seen on yotube yesterday a video of Pat Willis beaning Tebow in the face with a pepto bismo balloon…lol

  562. RaidO Says:

Hoping DHB pulls a Victor Cruz and has a breakout year. Turns into a top flight WR. Another questionable Al pick that turns into gold.

There’s no way to prove that any one hit is different than 10 other legal hits. If anything, the intent is on the players who follow through with the act. Williams enabled the acts, but he didn’t swing the wrench. What would be the charge? Conspiracy? That would be a difficult case to try.

Not that I necessarily disagree, but what real proof is there that we have a talented roster? Are we just each of us nodding to each other in agreement of this as a fact? I have no doubt we have some stars on this team, but I don’t know about having a “talented roster”. I think that’s what Reggie McKenzie is trying to fix.

Defensive tackle Amobi Okoye has drawn a fair amount of interest in free agency and that means he’s unlikely to return to the Bears in 2012.

He’s only 24 and still has another 6-8 years.
Just in case we don’t get Chapman and Alameda!

  601. Raider O Says:

It was only about 5 minutes at best, and was an absolute waste of time.

(couldn’t agree more)I found it to be insulting to the Raider nation that they would put together such a non informitive piece if garbage. You would think they would call one of the Raider beat writers to put something together of at least minor intelligence.

That being said, I hope the Raiders surprise a lot of people this year. It’s about time for a little respect.

It all depends on injuries. If Cutler goes down again, or if you get one or two key injuries along the front line, or lose one of your playmakers, you’re out of the playoffs — happened to the Raiders in ‘11.
    ——————
Of course, I think we could say that about any of the top 15 contending teams. That being said, I think the bears are in a better position than some other teams if they do have injuries to Cutler/Forte like last year because they have good enough backups to carry the load. (much better than Hanie and Barber last year)

  710. antispy3 Says:

Just heard the audio of Gregg Williams the Saturday prior to the Sanits-49ers tilt.

Wow! Then when Hugh Douglas of BSPN wouldn’t clarify the refrences to targeting Crabtree’s ACL, Vernon Davis’ ankle, Alex Smith’s chin & Williams concussion specifically it seemed this former player turned analyst is pining to don the pads once again (not gonna happen).

After Darren Woodson diffferentiated between targeting body parts & coachspeak hyperbole (take out the head & the body will fall) it put things into perspective (although he backtracked a bit when he said you didn’t see any of the Saints target the respective player’s body parts).

One thing neither former play turned analyst failed to charaterize; ALL players are involved in their livelihood that for most will be the prime source of income for their lives. Many of these players will never realize the potential to make money of this nature & fend for their famalies for the remainder of their lives; their formative years.

Supposedly there’s a “fraternity” of players. I realize intimmidation, competition & gamesmanship come into play but players are to hit each other LEGALLY as hard as possible in order to “manipulate” or “coerce” their opponents into a performance more reminiscent of defeat than putting out the effort to win. That is what competition on the football field is all about; anything other than that is assault with intent to do bodily harm.

Which opens that can of worms of alleged criminal behavior & accompanying criminal charges, which seems the coaches behavior can be linked to (conspiratory behavior, like a mob boss). . .

Even if this was against the 40whiners. . .an example must be made. What did he say before the Cardinals & Vikings playoff games on their Superbowl run? Were direct references made about Kurt Warner & his concussion history or the general health of the older Bret Favre?

Bounty money is one thing; to put players out of the game, to strike fear in & intimmidate their opposition\by targeting body parts is another. Woodson’s contention that once players make the decision to go after another player’s body parts does not guarantee they will ever again be able to ply their craft & pursue their livelihood. Their careers could be over. For that Williams should be put out to pasture himself. . .perhaps he should replace R Lee Ermey as a drill sergeant. . .

David from Redlands wants to know if the Raiders could use the No. 95 pick on Utah State running back Robert Turbin.

Bill Williamson: I think No. 95 may be a little high for Turbin, and the Raiders have other more immediate needs. But he could be an intriguing prospect at the end of the fourth or fifth rounds for Oakland. The East Bay native is a sleeper who has good size, speed and college game film. He’d be a fine addition in Oakland at the right spot.

And who was saying draft Turbin in the 3rd?

  712. YoungAmerican Says:

Okoye benefited greatly from Peppers and Idonije, as well as the Bears’ LB corps. At best, he’s a rotational player. Nickel DT who can get some penetration. Struggles against the run, and isn’t even very consistent rushing the passer. Loses 1-on-1 matchups regularly, and will never command a double team.

My big board again, with a couple minor updates:

3rd – NT Josh Chapman, Alabama; OLB Ronnell Lewis, Oklahoma; OLB/ILB Sean Spence, Miami; CB Leonard Johnson, Iowa State; OLB/DE Bruce Irvin, West Virginia; ILB James Michael-Johnson, Nevada; DE Tyrone Crawford, Boise State

4th – OLB Sammy Brown, Houston; FS Janzen Jackson, McNeese State; OT Jeff Allen, Illinois; DE/OLB Jonathan Massaquoi, Troy; ILB/OLB Nigel Bradham, Florida State; OLB Keenan Robinson, Texas; DE/OLB Jake Bequette, Arkansas

5th – DL Akiem Hicks, Regina; DE/OLB Cordarro Law, Southern Miss; DB DeQuan Menzie, Alabama; DE/OLB Julian Miller, West Virginia; NT Damon Harrison, William Penn; CB Asa Jackson, Cal Poly-SLO

5th – DB Robert Blanton, Notre Dame; DE/OLB Frank Alexander, Oklahoma; RB Tauren Poole, Tennessee; OLB/ILB Miles Burris, San Diego State; OT Steven Baker, ECU; ILB/OLB Emmanuel Acho, Texas; RB Terrance Ganaway, Baylor

6th – OT Matt Reynolds, BYU; NT Nicolas Jean-Baptiste, Baylor; CB Coty Sensabaugh, Clemson; DE/OLB Brandon Lindsey, Pitt; CB Cliff Harris, Oregon; NT Hebron Fangupo, BYU; WR A.J. Jenkins, Illinois

    =================

Remember, this isn’t a projection of where I think these players WILL go. This is simply how I have these players rated.

For example, while Cliff Harris may very well go in the 4th or 5th round (Bengals, I’m looking at you), I wouldn’t think about drafting him until the 6th. And while Jake Bequette might not go until the 5th or 6th round, I have a 4th round grade on him – he’d be a good pick with the 4th round compensatory pick, but could be a GREAT value pick later in the draft.

Oakland Raiders – positions of need

    LB, CB, TE, OL

Needs Analysis: The Raiders’ new GM, Reggie McKenzie, cleaned house a bit after the team’s 8-8 season. He released TE Kevin Boss, LB Kamerion Wimbley and CB Stanford Routt, while also losing free agents Michael Bush and Samson Satele. Oakland is also without its first four picks in the 2012 draft due to trades and the supplemental draft, though the league awarded the Raiders a third-round compensatory pick (95th overall), giving them one pick in the first two days of the draft. Signing cornerbacks Shawntae Spencer and Ron Bartell helps, but McKenzie might still try to upgrade the talent there. Finding a linebacker to start across from seemingly revitalized Aaron Curry is a major need. McKenzie gave RT Khalif Barnes a one-year deal, but might look to find him competition if unsure of his ability to protect QB Carson Palmer. Losing Boss to the Chiefs creates an opportunity for a mid-round pick at tight end to make an impact as a rookie.

    Round 3, Pick 32 (95) (Compensatory selection)
    Round 4, Pick 34 (129) (Compensatory selection)
    Round 5, Pick 13 (148)

    Round 6, Pick 19 (189)

    ====================

I have an early 3rd-round grade on him – but frankly, for the Raiders at least, I don’t think the value is there until the 4th round. I think Ta’amu will be off the board in the mid/late 2nd round to the Steelers, Jets, or Panthers.

More of a two-down player, and isn’t nearly as strong against the run as his reputation suggests. More of a penetrator who makes stops in the backfield than a true two-gap plugger.

Personally, I have Chapman rated higher than Ta’amu because of his ability to play in the 4-3 or 3-4, and because I believe he’s more capable of being a true 0-tech than Ta’amu. His injury may be the only reason Ta’amu gets drafted first – and to be honest, it wouldn’t surprise me to see Chapman drafted before Ta’amu regardless of injury. Just my opinion, though.

If I were the Raiders, I would avoid Ta’amu at #95 because I don’t think he’s an instant-impact player, which is what they need out of their #95 pick. I think Chapman stands the chance of seeing more playing time earlier than Ta’amu. Again – just my opinion.

  732. Raider O Says:

I’m happy with our TEs. Ausberry is a guy with speed and good hands, Gordon can Block as a TE or FB, Myers is well rounded, and Reece should get some snaps.

  733. YoungAmerican Says:

I think Chapman stands a much better chance of being there at #95 because of his injury – and I think he has far more upside than Ta’amu. We’ll see how the draft shakes out, though. Several teams have a need at NT, and it’s a rare skill set. Will lead to at least a couple players getting overdrafted.

  734. Raider O Says:

We need to add a LB to compete for OLB and provide depth at that position.

  735. DMAC Says:

I don’t think we need another TE.
We have Myers who can block and catch a pass when need.
We Have Gordon who is an excellent blocker.
And we have Ausberry.(entire staff is excited about his kid)

    + CP3 doesn’t throw to his TE’s anyway.

It kills me that he showed his birth certificate. Every poll showed that there was no political consequence to him holding out on showing it. That would have been great if he’d never shown the thing throughout his entire two terms. Let those racists sit there and wonder for the rest of their lives if America elected and re-elected a Kenyan. lol. People who think that way deserve to live in confusion. Anytime someone in the press implies the president is to blame for something that was clearly a problem before he took office, he should dance around the question and play head games with them.
