Raiders, Tollefson reach agreement on contract
By Steve Corkran
Friday, April 6th, 2012 at 6:02 pm in Oakland Raiders.
The Raiders agreed in principal to a contract with veteran defensive lineman Dave Tollefson on Friday afternoon, Bay Area News Group has learned.
Details of the contract are being finalized. A source close to the situation said Tollefson’s signing is imminent and a mere formality.
Tollefson, 29, spent the past five seasons with the New York Giants, where he played a part in their winning two Super Bowl titles.
He is expected to carve out a niche as part of Oakland’s defensive line rotation. He played defensive end, defensive tackle and linebacker for the Giants.
Tollefson started two games last season and posted a career-high five sacks. His signing will help offset the loss of veteran defensive linemen Jarvis Moss and Trevor Scott. Moss remains a free agent. Scott signed with the New England Patriots earlier in free agency.
The Raiders won’t comment on the matter until the contract is signed and the league approves the paperwork.
Tollefson was with the Raiders in training camp and on their practice squad for part of the 2007 season before the Giants signed him to their 53-man roster.
Originally, he was a seventh-round draft pick of the Green Bay Packers in 2006. Raiders general manager Reggie McKenzie was with the Packers when Tollefson was there for one season.

I agree. And it is what we have been doing for the last few years believe it or not.

I don’t think so either plunk as is the team needs more linebackers for 4-3 if we were to switch to 3-4 we would really be in dire straights because of lacking them

I don’t think any of us believe that the Raiders will have a
3-4 base, but to line up in some formations with a real
“Nose Tackle” in short yardage situations would only work to our advantage

It’s because Reggie and DA are confident that Brisiel will play at a high level for multiple years. The others, they’re not sure about.
It’s a win-win. Bartell and co. will play at a high level because they’re playing for their next big contract. If they do OK, we can re-sign them on the cheap if we want. If they do really well, we can re-sign them if it won’t break the bank. Otherwise, we let them walk and then reap the compensatory picks a year later.

After the Superbowl, Tollefson was a guy that got interviewed extensively on all the NY sports channels and network affiliates. They seemed to think he WAS a team leader and very integral to the defense’s success. So, whether he started doesn’t seem as vital as what he brings when he does get in. Jacoby Ford doesn’t start but he’s pretty important.
April 6th, 2012 at 8:07 pm

So Tollefson isn’t a locker room leader because he doesn’t start, but Cartright was because…he didn’t start?
_____________________________________
Nothing about this guys says leader. You are just making stuff up.
========================================
Two World Championship rings says “leader” to me. Basically we switched Tollefson as a situational pass rusher for Wimbley as a situational pass rusher. Both had similar pass rush stats the last year. But Tollefson comes with world championship hardware. And at 75% discount.
April 6th, 2012 at 9:08 pm
Tollefsen should be an upgrade over Scott and moss. Although I thought Scott was going to be a big part of our defense a couple years ago but. After that injury he was just never the same. As for Jarvis moss I don’t see why so many people want him back.. Semi average at best
April 6th, 2012 at 9:09 pm
This is something new. A FA coming to Oakland not as a last resort opportunity or as a gigantic cash cow opportunity. To top it off, Oakland was one of 4 teams in the running and he picked us over the World Champion Giants. Reggie must have a silver tongue. Things have really changed in Oakland. Getting the player we wanted and not paying a king’s ransom to get him. We probably weren’t even the highest $ bidder – amazing! Things are definitely looking up.

April 6th, 2012 at 9:48 pm
Wimbley had 7 sacks the whole season and the pundits think we’re toast cuzwe lost his production.
Tollefsen had 5.
2 more sacks and we replaced Wimbley.

5- CB: Coryell Judie, Aso Jackson, or Chris Greenwood.
5- DE/ OLB: Cordarro Law
6- FS: J Jackson

I also foresee Raiders DLine starting
Bryant LDE, Houston LDT, Seymour RDT, Shaughnessy RDE;
Tollefson, Brodine, and Kelly, as well as rookie NT for back ups.
Which means Kelly will need to renegotiate as Curry did or he’ll be cut and resigned as Carlisle was.

Too late. I already did.

My bad.

An avg of 2 sacks per season.
April 6th, 2012 at 10:11 pm
Ok, so 5 sacks last yr. is pretty good when u compare it to a ridiculously high paid starter like Wimbley.
The “experts” say that’s Wimbley’s thing…the sacks and rushing the passer.
I guess Wimbley rates high though in ALMOST sacking the QB or something? That he somehow affects things even if he doesn’t make the sack?

It’s a good move since we only have 1 DE on the roster with some experience. Bryant is a DT who played DE last year due to Shaughnessy’s injury, Houston is playing out of position IMHO, and Brodine and Davis are inexperienced and not a lock to make the 53 roster.

DJ,
We have a young (other than QB) good core IMO, but we need to add a few more players. It’s hard when you don’t have cap space and draft picks. I think we will be a SB contender soon, and I trust Reggie to make this team more talented than the Ravens, Steelers, and Packers. I don’t think the Giants and Pats are very talented, but I do think they are well coached. They also have elite QBs.
April 6th, 2012 at 11:11 pm
should be a useful player, good budget signing by new Reggime
still wonder if we don’t need a run stuffer DT/NT to stabilize defensive front and hopefully get more production out of our other defensive players
April 6th, 2012 at 11:16 pm
I think we still need to add an OLB, NT, DE, and depth.
April 6th, 2012 at 11:18 pm
And CB. I’m not sold on our CBs. Spencer was benched last season, and Bartell didn’t play due to serious neck injury. The other CBs are young and inexperienced.
April 6th, 2012 at 11:21 pm
Nice solid DEPTH signing. Grunden-ish. Coming from the 4-3 Giants, it looks like the Raiders will be 4-3 for at least one more year.
If they were switching to the 3-4 we would be picking up 3-4 players for depth.

Also In Baltimore Ravens
Christian Thompson has been scheduled for several visits and workouts with NFL teams. He met with the Oakland Raiders at the NFL scouting combine. Scout: How’s the draft process going? Thompson: “I’m taking it in stride and enjoying every moment of it. I’ve been getting good feedback from teams. Everything has been looking up. I don’t know what round I’ll go in, but whatever happens I’m going to work hard and be happy.”
Aaron Wilson
Also In Baltimore Ravens
As South Carolina State safety Christian Thompson continues to prepare for the NFL draft, he’s had an excellent role model to advise him: Baltimore Ravens Pro Bowl free safety Ed Reed. The former NFL Defensive Player of the Year has been offering guidance and tips to Thompson about what to expect as he makes the transition to the NFL. The 6-foot, 211-pounder is graded as the fifth-ranked free safety. Thompson has run the 40-yard dash in 4.50 seconds, bench pressing 225 pounds 18 times.

I can’t see Burfict going in the first 150 picks.
But I would take him in the 6th round if he is there.
He completely flopped this year, not just at the combine, but all season. Getting suspended, refusing to re-enter games, smiling and whopping it up for the ESPN camera’s when his team was losing by 30 points, and ultimately getting graded out as the 3rd best LB on his own lousy team.

April 7th, 2012 at 6:17 am
Burfict would be a good project. He’s obviously got playmaking ability, as evidenced by his junior year.
But we shouldn’t take him before the 6th. Dude needs some serious humbling, and coming in as a late-rounder might be just the ticket. I remember reading how humbled Bruce Campbell was when he slid to the 4th round. Too bad it didn’t help his play, but at least we got Goodson for him.

DE Dave Tollefson’s deal with the Raiders is for two years and $2.5 million.
It includes $1.5 million guaranteed. It’s reserve money for a player who will serve as the Raiders’ fifth or sixth defensive lineman. Despite his five-sack 2011, Tollefson won’t be worth monitoring in IDP leagues.

Good morning Raider O!
Hey, regarding you’re post about ChuckB’s (mis) use of Wimbley; this is one of the few times I can honestly say that it wasn’t his fault. Yes, he did call some really dumb defenses with Wimbley in the game, and Wimbley should have never been slotted as a 3-down OLB, but our linebacker depth last year was atrocious. Wimbley is a tweener that should be used as a situational pass rusher. It’s unfortunate that he played the wrong role in Oakland, but we really didn’t have an alternative.
April 7th, 2012 at 8:30 am
Drafting Burfict, even if you got him in the 6th round, you have to remember you’d be teaming him up alongside the other headcase, Rolando McClain. Having each other as teammates, bad influence on each other
April 7th, 2012 at 8:40 am
Good morning ET.
You are right. Goethel was injured again, and Groves is not an OLB in 4-3 scheme. I’m glad we traded for Curry. Bad roster management IMHO like releasing Sterling Moore.
April 7th, 2012 at 8:41 am

You guys here about the bicycler who hit the old man in San Francisco. What’s your take? It sounds like both were to blame. I see pedestrians walking before they have cross sign all the time. Herd mentality probably got this old man killed.
April 7th, 2012 at 8:53 am
My issue with Burfict is actually more on the field than off it.
He sucked last year. Was not good at all, and was gameplanned FOR, not against.
Teams routinely exploited him last year, whether it be in coverage, running running plays right at him, and baiting him into personal fouls.
Quite frankly, I don’t even think he is any good in the first place. Just very intense with good size.
April 7th, 2012 at 8:56 am
Burfict reminds me of Andy Katzenmoyer, if people remember that name.
Tons of acclaim coming into school, better as a sophmore than as a junior, and famous more for big hits and a crazy personality, more so than actually being a solid LB.
Katzenmoyer was taken in the first round, and was out of the league in about 3 years.

I do remember the media slobbering all over that guy. He hits the NFL, and…nothing.
April 7th, 2012 at 9:00 am
Don’t you guys think Burfict’s off-field attitude/problems is therefore affective his on-field play?
April 7th, 2012 at 9:03 am
I’m sure the off-field stuff didn’t help, but plenty of players came into the NFL with some off-field baggage and turned it around.
Only difference, is that most of those guys dominated in college. Contrary to popular belief and youtube clips, Burfict never even came close to doing so.
April 7th, 2012 at 9:03 am
Come to think of, JFB also just described Brian Bosworth, too.
April 7th, 2012 at 9:04 am
But if The Reggie thinks he is worth a look in the later rounds, I am on board with it.
I am sure he could be better than Aaron Curry.
April 7th, 2012 at 9:05 am
I see Burfict being drafted by Rex Ryan for sure anyway. 4th or 5th round. Just like he was keen to give Gholston and then Maybin a chance.
April 7th, 2012 at 9:10 am
The guy wasn’t even honorable mention Pac-12 team this year.
That is pretty alarming, with so much riding on the line this season for him draft and really life-wise.
April 7th, 2012 at 9:13 am
Then there was Burfict’s preseason fight in the locker room with a teammate:
He did accept blame, sort of, for punching a teammate in the locker room, an incident that carried over from the practice field, he said.
“It started in seven-on-seven and he ran a route and hit me, and we’re not supposed to hit each other in seven-on-seven,” he said. “We had an argument, and we brought it into the locker room. We started chattering about it, he started rough-housing me. He pushed me, and my first instinct was to swing, and everyone thinks I’m the bad guy because my first instinct was to swing on the guy.”
Burfict belted receiver Kevin Ozier. Burfict is 6-foot-3, 252 (though he admits he played at 260 pounds last season) and a superstar. Ozier is 6-foot, 200. He’s a former walk-on. And Burfict’s initial point of contention is getting bumped by a 200 pounder during a drill?

It’s hard to imagine how people in a good position to lift-off their lives with a multi-million dollar sports contract can blow it away before then. But I can see how some people are just wired differently where football is taken as ’seriously’ as many other things going on in their lives, they just don’t see it as the be-all, singular focus, like it is to say a peyton manning.

Sapp earns 115k a month and is going broke. People should discount anything this idiot says as hogwash simply because the evidence supporting his stupidity is so strong.
April 7th, 2012 at 11:46 am
I think Knapp could be exactly what Palmer needs. Knapp’s rush-based offense will help set up the deep pass, which Palmer loves – but I think it will also help him cut down on his picks. Accuracy isn’t his problem – it’s his penchant for taking unnecessary risks. More short and intermediate timing routes will help get the most out of the talent on the roster, and play into Palmer’s strengths while giving him fewer opportunities to make high-risk throws.
Of course, this is all theoretical. But I think there’s a good chance Palmer has a VERY good 2012 campaign. Now, that isn’t to say the Raiders are surely playoff bound. But I think under Greg Knapp, Palmer is absolutely capable of putting up Matt Schaub/Jay Cutler-like numbers. Could very well be a top ten QB this season.

I’m not sure why people are so enamored with getting higher draft picks, even if that means trading a handful of legit starters. Draft picks are the shiny new toys that have the potential to look as good on the field as the do in the shop window, but are otherwise unproven. In reality, very few ever live up to the full expectations put on them, even if they do turn out to be good or even very good. Compared to solid players that you know actually can play year after year in the NFL, it makes little sense to give up too much to chase a dream.
April 7th, 2012 at 12:21 pm
The great thing about the Tollefson signing is that you need at least 6 good DL to run a 4-3. Having 8 that can play a lot of downs at the NFL level is even better.
If there’s one thing that I thought the Raiders DL lacked in last season it was stamina. How many games started with the front 4 pressure from hell and then saw that tail off by the start of the second half. By the 4th quarter, the DL looked like they were on siesta.
Having multiple quality guys that you can rotate in is key to keeping them all fresher and more impactful. That’s why the loss of Hendu is bigger than people see, because he took a lot of snaps that let Kelly and Seymour rest. When those two tire, the entire DL play drops off noticeably, so having guys that can rotate in the DT mix is a key ingredient to 4th quarter success.
April 7th, 2012 at 12:21 pm

Yup, that’s why those 98 n 99 yard drives happened
April 7th, 2012 at 12:28 pm
Tollefson had five sacks playing part-time, to go along with good solid run defense and special teams play.
Wimbley had three sacks in fifteen games of starting full-time, to go along with lousy run defense and no special teams play.
And Tollefson’s about 1/10 the price.
What’s the downside again???

Dennis Allen joined 95.7 The Game in San Francisco with The Wheelhouse with John Lund to discuss his reaction to the leaked Gregg Williams audio from the 2012 playoffs, keeping in touch with Gregg Williams recently, what Gregg Williams is thinking right now with his suspension in the New Orleans Saints bounty scandal, his method of motivating players and the biggest challenge he’s encountered so far in being a head coach.
You worked under Gregg Williams for some time. What is your reaction to the leaked audio that has come out from the playoff game against the San Francisco 49ers?
“Well I really don’t have a reaction to it. I haven’t heard the audio. I heard there is some stuff out there, but I really have been working this morning trying to get through the off-season program and really focusing in on trying to get our team ready.”
Have you spoken to Gregg Williams in the last couple of months at all?
“I have not.”
What do you think Gregg Williams thoughts are right now with his suspension?
“I’d hate to try to speak for him because I don’t really exactly know what he is thinking. Obviously I know what I saw that came out in the media of him and expressing his remorse for the things that went on and I am sure he feels that way.”
How do you motivate players in light of this whole bounty scandal?
“I think you gotta find out what it is that does motivates them. A lot of guys are motivated by those pre-game speeches. Some guys are motivated by incentives and I am not talking about incentive programs, but I am talking about the money that is in their contract. You gotta find out what are the things that motivate them. Is it their families that motivate them? Find out the things that are important to them and try to motivate them that way.”
As a new head coach what is the biggest thing you have learned so far?
“Well the biggest thing I’ve learned so far is there are a lot of responsibilities that goes onto the head coach. There’s a lot of things that come up on a daily basis whether it be dealing with players, whether it be dealing with the administration, whether it be dealing with the media, whether it be dealing with any aspect like scheduling. There’s just a lot of things that go involved with it and it’s been a challenge. It’s been a lot of fun and I’ve really enjoyed coming to work every day and trying to put this thing together.”

==================
He’s been part of some bad teams and has often put up an ugly stat line. So that’s definitely part of the reason. Many people think Palmer is a question mark if only because you never know which Carson Palmer will show up.
That’s fair enough, but there’s no denying that he’s the kind of QB who has the talent to take over games – and has done so in the past.
To me, he’s very comparable to Jay Culter and Matt Schaub. Which is definitely not a bad thing. As much as I like Luck and Griffin as prospects (and I really do – both of them APPEAR to have all the tools necessary to be elite for a decade or more), there’s no 100% surefire indication that either of them can even match that level of production, much less surpass it and be a truly elite, top five QB in the NFL.
Hard to find a capable QB in the NFL, much less a top fifteen, top ten guy. Hue might have overpaid for CP3, but as I said before – can’t pay too much if the guy ends up putting your team within striking distance of a Superbowl. If that happens? I have no problem giving up two first-rounders. Let’s just hope that McKenzie and Allen can put the right pieces around him to make a run.

Well, hopefully the Raiders do make it into post-season.
1. First thing that needs to change is getting out coached in the 2nd half. The adjustments on both sides of the ball last season were pathetic at times. (especially on D)
2. Better discipline, accountability and players giving 110% Gio for example..not all pro but shows up to play.

All QBs(players) have terrible games now and then-they are human. What gets me is how so many people focus on those when judging guys.I’ve repeatedly read comments focusing on Palmer’s GB game yet rarely see any about his games against Det. or SD which seem to be the norm were the GB game was the exception.
April 7th, 2012 at 12:58 pm
I am no CP advocate and hardly think he is “elite”, but also feel he is heads and tails above JC who is a serial #2 bench warmer. There is nothing wrong with being a serial bench warmer at $3.5M per season. I do like CP’s long game and he admitted in his interview that he’ll be doing bootlegs per Knapp’s playbook. If CP gains some movement and elusiveness avoiding the rush then maybe he’ll be okay.

The problem is Lefty, many QBs can look good against the SD’s and Detroit’s in the NFL – the lower teams. Put those QB’s against great teams and ability can be judged. You can’t completely blame Palmer in the one-sided loss against GB.
There are many DMAC man-crush lovers here who talk about DMAC being the best RB in Raider’s history or the NFL. First, his record isn’t close to supporting that and second, he runs very average against good and/or great teams.

YA and toward the end of last year when their defense wore down the team looked bad although Ben was hurt.

I would put Romo in the same class as Palmer. Only thing about Romo is that he has these inexplicable brain farts that cost his team in key situations. Really don’t know what that’s about. He has a great skill set, and has proven himself capable of beating some tough teams. But when the season is on the line, he always finds a way to fall short. He’ll put together an amazing game for 50 minutes, and then blow it in the home stretch. Like clockwork. Never seen anything like it.

April 7th, 2012 at 1:39 pm
Raiders coaching staff wasn’t very good @ making adjustments last year. . .not having two formidable, effective running backs & lack of speed allowed defenses to play more aggressively against the Raiders “O.” The TE & Reese were taken out of the game because of lack of threat from the WR’s (often injured). The injuries & lack of speed they created cut down the fact early on all the skill players were to be reckoned with.
If DMC(what is his real nickname?) is healthy his speed creates space for the passing game. If Moore continues his development defenses have to think about bracketing him. If DHB improves his route running & becomes a more consistent hand catcher he will be open on the slants that are available in the WCO. If Ford stays healthy his RAC potential will threaten the opposition. If Ausberry is, in fact the “beast” CP has advertised the TE position will acquaint itself. This will allow Reese to find opeen spaces against slower LB’s & smaller safeties. Then the Raidere can take advantage of Cp’s deep arm & go downfield more prevalently than usual in the WCO.
All these are byproducts of the WCO. Just look @ the Texan offense & supplant the Raider players in their stead. All these factors were not in attendance for CP last year. And I’m not even factoring the development of Tim McGee, Taiwan Jones or Mike Goodson. . .or a special package for Terrell Pryor. . .
So I think the potential for a formidable
Raider “O” is there. Wouldn’t mind sacraficing a #1 pick in 2013 for CP. . .final four in 2013 playoffs or bust!
Now about that defense. . .

Young, you are correct. You combine Romo’s brain farts with coaches’ brain farts, and J.Jones meddling, Cowboys are going nowhere.
Romo is out of it mentally. I think that ugly, fat blonde he was hooked up with a few years back sucked him dry. He was never the same after her.

Lol , you talking bout simpson

YA,actually I heard last year where someone broke Romo’s stats down and he preformed better the more the game progressed-ie. he was better in the 2nd than the 1st qtr, better in the 3rd than the 2nd,and played his best in the 4th qtr of games.Hard to believe sometimes when you watch him but that is what the stats say.

Yeah, that’s it I think, Jessica Simpson, big around as a refrigerator now. She went on after the breakup with Romo to launch a cosmetics, fashion and accessory line and now is worth $500M.
Geez, I guess it’s better to be lucky than smart.

C’mon you guys…defense is 7 men in the box or 8…4-3 or 3-4 is ir-revelant. Against a running team you play 3-5, 4-4, or 3-5, a passing team you play nickel or dime.
You need versatile players up front that can play multiple positions, and a scheme that can stop the run!
The number of secondary players you play dictates your front.
