Kingdon on Sirius

By Jerry McDonald - NFL Writer
Monday, April 9th, 2012 at 12:58 pm in Oakland Raiders.

Longtime Raiders scout Jon Kingdon was a guest of Alex Marvez and Gil Brandt on Sirius XM NFL radio over the weekend, and although there was nothing earth-shattering in his revelations, it was a rare opportunity to hear someone from the scouting department going on the record.

On the vision on general manager Reggie McKenzie and coach Dennis Allen . . .

“We met with at the combine, we got together and all got on the same page. Things change a little bit, what kind of players they’re looking for, specifically position-wise. We’re moving to more of a zone blocking scheme, and our defense will change a little bit so we’ll be working very close with him to get the type of players they’re looking for. I think on the offensive line we’ll be looking for movement, the athletic type of linemen, that’s an example of something we’ll be focusing on.”

Looking to the future past simply this season when assessing talent in the McKenzie/Allen era . . .

“Yeah, pretty much, particularly, I think you have to anticipate losing players , guys that next year will be true free agents and restricted free agents and such. You want to get guys that can step in immediately and you want to get guys that will be able step in a year or two from now.”

Philospophy on workout warriors such as Bruce Campbell, dealt for Carolina running back Mike Goodson . . .

“I thought the fourth round was a great spot for him. You want a little more consistency in his play out of college. I think that’s what held him back, obviously. His workout numbers were off the charts. I think one of the problems was we put him in at guard and that really wasn’t a position for him. I think in retrospect give him one spot and kind of let him grow with that spot. I think this trade works out awfully well for both of us in the sense that we’ve lost Michael Bush. Goodson’s a player who we really liked coming out and he was sort of behind on the depth chart in Carolina, didn’t have an opportunity, and Bruce at this point wasn’t getting much of an opportunity either, so I think it could work out both ways.”

Kingdon was identified as the “director of college scouting” by Sirius, interesting in that the Raiders have never called their talent evaluators anything other than the non-specific desingation of “scout.”

McKenzie said in February he didn’t plan on making any changes in the scouting department until after the draft.

The scouting staff is being looked at closely right now, and their performance and how they see players will be crucial in whether or not they’re retained.

Not that they have to agree with McKenzie and Allen on every turn. Healthy debate and dissent is important when evaluating talent, leaving the final call to McKenzie.

A common misperception among some concerning Raiders scouts is that they simply fell in line with everything Al Davis saw in a player. In actuality, I’ve talked to a couple of scouts who often disagreed with Davis on players and told him so. They were usually overruled, but to assume there won’t be some productive give-and-take with McKenzie and that they’ll mindlessly be bringing in “bigger, stronger, faster” at the expense of production would be a mistake.

The Raiders won’t be on the clock until the third round of the draft, but the scouting department has been on the clock since McKenzie arrived.

KICKIN’ IT LIVE ON THE 405

Yo Blob Goobers, Dorks & Assorted Nerds

Got my hot new boy band, 2 Kewl 4 Skool, packed in the tour van, headed to rehearsal in Hermosa Beach.

Today, after we finish blow drying and styling our pubes, we’ll get to work on some sweet dance moves. Everyone’s been fitted with brand new knee pads and jock straps to keep our swag tight

Yo KNOW we got Olive Garden catering lunch, wizzle. Nothing says multi-platinum boy band like dropping humongous Italian-inspired turd pies

I also gotta start actually working on some 2K4S music soon. Got some lyrical ideas floating around I might drop on the blog a little later.

Yo, 2012 is the year of 2K4S, tell your kids to start saving allowance $ now, cause our record won’t be cheap

PLAYA HATIN’ AINT MY THING BUT LAKE SHOW HAS 16 RINGS

Yeah raiders have other needs like CB and RB. Not sold on the current DBs and if or when DMAC goes down Jones and Goodson?. Jones cant block and Goodson does not hold on to the ball. That is if Goodson even makes it past preseason. It could get ugly unless Reggie brings in another RB. I don’t see Jones carrying the full load like Bush.

    ============================================

Bush couldn’t carry the whole load, at not well. That’s why he’s now Forte’s backup in the windy city.

Yup. Guys who actually know how to play as opposed to physical freaks who may or may not know.

Yo, just slightly strained my sphincter on that last dance move. Took a few Advil and pouring a top shelf margarita for healing purposes only

Gives me a little time to bust our some lyrics while the rest of 2K4S rocks the rehearsal room. Yo, their moves suck but our pubes look way tight

I wonder how the scouting department will look after the draft? Who stays, who goes, who is brought in. Should be a very interesting point of topic after the draft.

  • hwnrdr

Best part of this story, and it is very good to know…is that the scouts did argue with Al about who to draft.

  • Rdrllldubk

We have to be pleased with the way things are going under Reggie and with all things considered. Cant wait to see how the draft goes for us, even tho it’ll be a long wait till 95…

    RaiderRockstar-
I’d take Coby Fleener if available, which I doubt. Ladarious Green would be my second choice. Or any 6-6, 240 + pound TE with hands.
Then again I didn’t know our scouts were able to speak before the XM interview either. This could be the most logical draft for us in a long freakin time. Like forever.

  • bigb92

I think Kelly stays at least another year.
He’s one of only 4 DT on the roster at the moment,
and there were 8 DL on the roster last year.

  • YoungAmerican

I do wonder what this team would look like if Al listened to his scouts and coaches.

  • No Lo

Re post 22. Just a quick follow up. It is so ironic. Al dies and so does his way of doing business. I have not read or heard anyone bemoaning the future without AD. It is as if everyone just breathed a big sigh of relief and moved on. It just goes to show us all how out of touch Al really was. Too bad he would not bow out gracefully. His death gave the Raiders their freedom.

  • hwnrdr

    LMAO, Reign8

  • RaiderRetribution

Players that could be traded, but would only get a mid to late round draft pick:

    Mitchell
    Murphy
    Ausberry or Gordon,
    Van Dyke
    Kelly

players that could garner a 2nd or 3rd:

    Shaughnessy
    Heyward-Bay
    McClain
    Houston

I’m not saying we should trade any of these men, simply being realistic.

  • 8RaiderReign8

I like RMD’s approach to this season. Win/Loss firgure out what you have so your better prepared for the future. Now we wont have to second guess decisions and over analyze. I wouldn’t trade anyone on the roster unless its an obvious win for us like the Goodson trade. You can’t honestly say how these players would play in a normal situation.

  • Master Beeecham

Word, that’s pretty sweet the draft is coming up.

Speaking of my new boy band 2 Kewl 4 Skool, I’ve been advised by my all-star producing team the Certified Platinum Posse that we need to start a fan club ASAP

Fan clubs are where the big money is, and makes it easier for us to unload our merchandise at inflated prices

So I’ve got a patent pending on -

The 2 Kewl 4 Skool Party Krew (2K4SPK)

I’ll be selecting a lucky blogger as the Krew Leader wholl be my right hand man, and another as Krew Loser, who’ll be sorting through fan mail and licking stamps for return envelopes.

I’m thinking Raider O or DJ Johnny for KLeader and obviously Krappy and/or Brian the Genital for KLoser.

Let me know your thoughts/suggestions so I can start making name tags
