DL Tollefson says he’s ready to get to work
By Steve Corkran
Tuesday, April 10th, 2012 at 2:53 pm in Oakland Raiders.
Dave Tollefson, the newest Raider, arrived in Alameda today, got in his first workout and then took a few minutes to discuss things such as what he brings to the equation, what it’s like returning to the Raiders and the key to being sucessful.
Tollefson will wear No. 58, which suggests the Raiders envision him as an outside linebacker. Don’t be fooled by the number. Tollefson is versatile enough to help out at linebacker, defensive end, defensive tackle, as well as special teams.
As evidenced by this 10-minute question-and-answer session, Tollefson also has a firm grasp on the nuances of the NFL, the Raiders history and Jim Carrey’s movie career.
Here is the entire transcript:
Q: What have the Raiders told you about how you’re going to be used?
A: “It’s just a jack-of-all trades is what I’ve been able to kind of hang my hat on. They haven’t promised me anything, which is what I want. I don’t want to be promised anything. That’s not the style of player that I am. There’s an opportunity to play, whether that’s starting or a backup, a rush guy or a guy that can play the edge in the run. So, it’s going to be a little bit of everything, which is what I love to do.”
Q: What’s it like coming back home?
A: “Well, it’s awesome. To grow up here, I lived here for 22 years, to come back home where my mom, my step-dad are out here, my sister, my brother, a lot of my friends. My phone was blowing up as soon as this thing went public. It’s definitely exciting for me and my family.”
Q: How hard was it to leave the Raiders in 2007?
A: “It was definitely tough. The Raiders (allowed) me to continue my career in the NFL by sending me to Europe and putting me on the practice squad. There’s a debt there that I feel I like I never really got to repay after leaving. So, it’s kind of funny how life works. You get an opportunity to come back to someplace like this and kind of really show them that you appreciate the opportunity that they gave you.”
Q: How much did it help you learning under the likes of Strahan, Umenyiora and Tuck?
A: “It’s huge, man. To be the best, you got to be around the best, to be surrounded by people that are successful for yourself to be successful. They’re a great group of guys. That period of time was really special. I just got here today and got my first workout in today. There’s a group of guys here that can play ball up front, too, which is exciting to see. I’m not quite an old, wily vet yet, I got a few good years left in me, but I’ve seen quite a bit in this league. We got a group of guys here that can do some big things, also. I look back fondly on my time with those guys. It was special, for sure, but you can’t dwell on the past. You got to keep moving forward and make it the future.”
Q: What kind of lessons can you bring to this team?
A: “I don’t know much, but there’s a few things that I do know. One of them is, getting in the tournament. You have to have a chance. If you’re not in the tournament, which is playoffs, when I say that, you don’t have a chance. I always like to quote my favorite movie, ‘Dumb and Dumber,’ when she was asking, ‘What are the chances that a girl like me and a guy like you can be together? And she says, ‘One in a million.’ Jim Carrey says, ‘So, you’re saying there’s a chance?’ Just have the opportunity to play for a title, get in the playoffs, that’s all you need. Then you take it one game at a time and the next thing you know, you’re hoisting up the Lombardi trophy. There’s no secret to winning championships. It’s just a matter of doing the work and when it comes to playoffs time, taking advantage of the opportunities.”
Q: How do you think you fit with the Raiders’ defensive schemes?
Tollefson: I think it’s the multiplicity of different things I can do as a player. I’ve played a lot of snaps inside. Will I do that here? I’m not sure, we’ve got a great group of D-tackles that can do a really good job inside. So who knows? I think that’s what intrigued the Raiders about me was the ability to kind of do everything. And that’s something that you have to do as a guy who hasn’t necessarily started in this league, started a couple of games, but you kind of got to be good at everything because you really don’t know when the opportunity is going to come for you to contribute to the team winning a game. I think that’s what hopefully they’re going to use me for, kind of, whatever, what do you need me to do? I can even mow the grass if you want to.
Q: Establish any relationships here that still endure to this day?
Tollefson. It was great to see the equipment guys again. When you’re an old practice squad guy you get close to those guys like that. It was good to see them again. Some of the front office guys, I remember. When I left here, it was kind of like, it was a like a secret mission and left in the middle of the night. It was such a quick stop here. There is a mutual amount of respect throughout the league amongst players, so there is a bunch of guys that I do know that I played against that I do have a lot of respect for so that comes into play.
Q: What would you say was deciding factor for choosing Oakland?
Tollefson: Obviously I have that relationship with Reggie McKenzie being drafted by Green Bay, so the level of comfort to come in here knowing this organization is heading in the right direction with the guys they brought in to run it, coach Allen, I got to meet him on my visit here and the energy that he brings, it’s exciting, and obviously, I’m from here. I grew up a Raiders fan. My mom is a Raiders fan. Obviously she’s a fan of her son, but if you ask her who her favorite team is she’s going to say the Raiders. There’s something special about playing for the team that you grew up watching and where you grew up. It means a lot to me that they believe in me, that’s a big part of it. Again, I just go back to the excitement here. Guys are excited to play football, talk football and get ready.
Q: Difficulty here stopping the run for several years, what’s the key to a defense stopping the run?
Tollefson: You’ve got to be physical, and I think sometimes run defense can be overshadowed by the want to get sacks because they are such big game-changing plays. But you’ve got to earn the right to rush the passer and the way you do that is by stopping the run. That’s going to be a focus of mine no matter what, and I think it will be the guys up front. You’ve got to do it up front. Obviously, the linebackers are named linebackers because they back the line, and if the guys up front aren’t getting the job done, it doesn’t matter who you have behind you. It’s definitely going to be a focus of ours, to stop the run, because if you can’t stop the run, you can’t even start thinking about getting sacks because they’ll just run the ball all day on you.
Q: No more questions?
Tollefson: Go Ygnacio Valley Warriors.

Option B: Lamar Houston starts, you have an extra $5 million a year, you get a high 3rd round pick, and you develop your young, possibly EQUAL talent (Houston).

Low profile team player that can make a difference.
A good solid addition, based on merit.
Better than Jive Walker, D Hall, etc…

RaiderLen,
Zimmerman has stopped hiding and has contacted the prosecutor. He is taking responsibility for his actions (Seymour/Kelly looking in your direction).

Hopefully Sey and Kelly will do their part. Maybe a the new staff will get the production needed to stop the run, Jury is out, in my mind.
Hope real justice is served. Zimmerman doesn’t have large $$$, so I don’t believe he can buy His way out if in fact the case is stacked against Him. (If He’s Guilty.)
If he’s innocent, then I hope he walks on merit, and is not thrown to the political wolves for their Public gain.
Kell is a product of the Civil Rights Movement, I get where He’s coming from.

In the ’60s and ’70s Al brought in talent.
The game changed and different talent was needed to fit the scheme.
Al had the right players but for a different time and a different game.
When the game changed, Al failed to find the talent necessary to keep pace.
Wolf changed that for a period and continued doing so once he was released.
Gruden changed things too much and get sent out of town over night.
There is talent on this team, all it needs is modern organization with the insight to use it in a modern way.

I’m not a stat geek, but I think that the Denver D improved the 2nd half of the season.

RaiderLen, the Constitution was a good try, I suppose.
As soon as it was ratified, those that wanted to rule began to modify it. The “progressives” claim it is a “living document” that changes itself. Simpletons believe that crp.
The Declartion of Indepedence says it all.

Without some “structure” those of influence will impose their structure on others.

Anallpro,
The Declaration of Independence was a legal document put forth under principals of equity as a direct answer to King George, regarding charges of traitorous behavior against the Colonies.
The principal author of the Declaration of Independence was Thomas Jefferson, who, at the time, was the greatest lawyer, who solely operated in the court of equity in Virginia, a court of equity being the court of the King’s conscience.
Just a simple factoid all Americans should know.

A bookkeeper is a recorder of events.
An accountant is an evaluator of events and creates a strategy to best position the entity moving forward.
Hows that?

That’s why I said its part of accounting. You record transactions but most bookkeeper don’t know how to analyze those transactions, and most of them don’t know the regulations on how to report those transactions.
Bookkeeping is a small part of accounting. It’s very basic that most people hire HS kids to do it.

One of my favorite front office/player stories is when Ray Lewis DEMANDED that the Ravens go out and get a big, game changing, defensive tackle. Subsequently, the Ravens immediately go out and get Haloti Ngata, and he’s been a force in the NFL ever since!
So with that being said, Reggie Mckenzie, do whatever you need to do within reason, to move us high enough to get the 6′3 348lb Defensive force known as…

Man I really like Houston too. Gonna be great. Maybe it wasn’t you, but it just seems like I’ve read a bunch of people wanting to trade TK to just get some random draft picks, like a 4th rounder as someone suggested. He had the 2nd most sacks in the league from the DT position. Top 15 total tackles of DT/NT position. 2010 he was 2nd to Suh in both total tackles and sacks. I hope they keep him, but thats me.
Yeah, Al paid him too much. That really irks alot of folks.
I want to see him play in a multiple front D, like the one that we’ll have this year.
April 10th, 2012 at 8:19 pm
Raider O, why don’t you admit that all you want is to become part of a cartel that gets paid more than you are worth?
April 10th, 2012 at 8:22 pm
We need depth and that’s what we will draft. We need OL depth and definetly LB’s I doubt we go for any glamor or well recognized names. I suggest we familiarize ourselves with the LB’s that will be available in the 4th and 5th rounds. We need a backup MLB and OLB as well as a developmental guard who we expect to start next year (3rd rd). The LB’s will play special teams but not start except in 3-4 alignments. Next year, we need to acquire extra draft picks once we see we won’t make the playoffs b4 the trade deadline. Example, trade Seymour like week 4 when our record will be 1-3 and get a 3rd round pick for him to a team in the playoff hunt.
April 10th, 2012 at 8:22 pm
Trade so and so for a 4th round draft pick.

Really have no idea what the league thinks of Him.
If the new staff and Reggie feel we have surplus at the position, I’m down with a trade.

TK could be traded to a team in contention as well, might get a 3rd or 4th, Bears might bite.
We are missing a # 2 next yr (QB Palmer). We don’t have a lot of tradeable players. I would trade next years # 1 for a # 2 in 2013 and a #1 in 2014, although we need players now. That’s a draft phisophy for established playoff teams.

April 10th, 2012 at 8:33 pm
I like this guy. Will be a heckuva utility man for us. Like his disposition, too. Will fit right in.
What I’d like with the 95 pick will depend on what we’re doing philosophy wise. I’m going to say I’d like to get Chapman. That is predicated on the Raiders implenting more 3-4 than in prior years. The injury scares me for a guy his size, but could potentially be huge talent for that pick.
I was thinking Chase Minnifield when I was looking at what evaluators were saying about him—but then remembered him against Virginia Tech this past season. He had something like 60 penalty yards in the first half. Too similar to what I had to watch on Sundays.
So put me down for Chapman with 95.
April 10th, 2012 at 8:33 pm
Not knocking Kelly although he was somewhat overpaid, but paying guys that kind of money and we are not playoff participants is my reason for letting him go. I see the team needing a few drafts to be good. We have no depth, one major injury and we r done, (say McFadden)
April 10th, 2012 at 8:35 pm
How many snaps did each play? That would tell more than starts. I’m saying keep all 4…..Seymour, Kelly, Houston and Bryant. Equal out the number of snaps, keeping guys from wearing down in the 4th. A good rotation I think. Offensive lines will be the ones worn out.
April 10th, 2012 at 8:36 pm
#228 I trust Reggie to build but will he sign the key free agents once we get close or will he be like the Steelers, only sign their own guys and never get the splash player

———————————-
Reading through Reggie’s remarks from interviews, I get the sense that he’s working to create depth, get under the cap, and then create a “nest egg” to acquire the Name player when the opportunity presents itself.
All within the context of the Big Picture.

I could see drafting one for the future. Takes those guys in the middle a couple of years to mature. He’d be ready when Seymour is gone.

Reggie’s been adding some much needed depth… Especially when thinking about the mass of injurys the team suffered last year…. Tollefson is that kind of team player the Raiders need … Not a mega talent , but makes the team better ..

I think the list is overloaded with guys that are going to be gone, Alameda, Champan, Kendricks, etc.

About Skip Bayless:
We’re feeding the troll, we know. But if this isn’t the final reason you need to stop paying attention to someone who brags about not watching games, and blatantly lies to the people he’s paid to inform, then we can’t help you. If you want to contribute more to this buffoon’s sad success, you deserve the misleading information he’s going to toss your way.
————-
Sounds like Bayless would fit in well in this blog.
April 11th, 2012 at 6:15 am
Once you realize Skip is there for entertainment and not information, he is not so bad.
A little too much of the Priest syndrome though. Always wrong, and never fesses up over it, but the few times he is right, it is look at me, I am the greatest, bow down.

the Giants may be acquiring linebacker Keith Rivers from the Bengals.
question will be compensation. Last month, the Eagles secured Pro Bowl middle linebacker DeMeco Ryans from the Texans for a fourth-round pick and flip-flopping of third-rounder choices. Rivers has a better draft pedigree but less of a career than Ryans. The Bengals may not get much, if they indeed will be moving on by moving Rivers out.

April 11th, 2012 at 7:10 am
***
Interesting – so if we can’t stuff the run, it’s the D-Line’s fault (not the LB’s or DB’s)
Amazing that everybody was blaming Michael Huff & Kirk Morrison for a poor Run Defense a few years back!!

YOU basically echoed that statement all of last offseason and half of this one. So where does the problem lie?
Kirk didn’t have the same supporting cast as McJelly
I don’t think you can compare Kirk’s coworkers to Rolando’s. Did #55 ever play with guys like Sands, Warren, Joseph, Wakefield, Boschetti, Brayton, Burgess, Ellis, Hamilton & Sapp up front ??

You definitely confuse the hell out of me with your opinion of certain players. I guess the only way you can say Cam is overrated is by the W/L record but he improved his teams record by 5 wins over the previous season, and transformed the leagues WORST offense into the 7th ranked offense in the league. They averaged 12.2ppg in 2010 and 25.4 in 2011, that is a HUGE increase. I simply can not see how you can say that is overrated.

At the end of the 3rd round it should be best player available. We all know the Raiders need some depth at LB, but there should also be some good interior o-lineman on the board.
It’s a crapshoot. Probably not gonna happen, but just for grins put me down for that Burfict kid from ASU. First round grade who might be slipping due to attitude or whatever. Could be a steal. Don’t know if Reggie would be willing to gamble on his first ever draft pick, though. Who knows?

Fig Newton is basically the black version of Jeff George. He’ll put up some decent numbers. He might make a decent fantasy football option. However, the Panthers will finish 3rd or 4th in that division again. He may get invited to a few Pro Bowls like Vince Young did, due to popularity.
I didn’t like him at Auburn. I don’t like him at Carolina. just my opinion. Terrelle Pryor has more to offer than that guy imo. don’t bother responding

Speaking of Cam and the Panthers, I was on the way to the amusement park last Sat, passed through Charlotte and the stadium. Oaktown is coming there this season and I WILL be there.
It’s been awhile since I’ve seen my boys live and in person. Made the short trek to Indy few years back. Famous Amos had a long TD called back and Peyton put it on em pretty good.
So, any of you guys down here in the southeast that are planning on going, we’ll have to get together for a cold one beforehand.
Although, Oakland is also scheduled to visit Cincy as well. That might’ve been even more fun. Carson Palmer’s return. Would’ve been interesting. Oh well.
BTW,

@bcz
tough question. I’m a big fan of both players. I think Carson Palmer is going to do big things for us this season. I’m very happy to have Pryor waiting in the wings. I think this may turn out like a Favre/Rodgers scenario, where Pryor sits on the bench 3 full seasons, then comes in Year#4 and takes the league by storm.
2012 = Palmer (AFC West Champs)
2013 = Palmer (wins Super Bowl. retires)

Walter’s Latest Mock Draft…Raiders
95. Oakland Raiders: Sean Spence, OLB, Miami
If you click on Sean Spence’s name and read his scouting report, you’ll read a note from Charlie saying, “Oakland was showing a lot of interest in outside linebackers at the Senior Bowl.” As it turns out, Sean Spence is one of the top prospects on the board.
129. Oakland Raiders: Matt McCants, OT, UAB
It’s a good thing the Raiders were awarded several compensatory picks because they have a ton of holes – some of which happen to be on the offensive line.
148. Oakland Raiders: Jonathan Massaquoi, DE/OLB, Troy The Raiders lost two pass-rushers this offseason in Kamerion Wimbley and Trevor Scott. They’ll need replacements.
168. Oakland Raiders: Dan Herron, RB, Ohio State
The Raiders need a power complement for Darren McFadden in the wake of Michael Bush’s signing with Chicago
April 11th, 2012 at 9:28 am
Rivers has been very injury prone. Good player when healthy. I had him listed with Aaron Curry and Leroy Hill as players the Raiders should look to trade for last season. Obviously, he’s the most talented of the bunch. Don’t really see a clear role for him with Aaron Curry on the team. I would assume McKenzie is going to use the draft to address the OLB situation.
April 11th, 2012 at 9:28 am
How’s it going Raider O?
Kinda surprised the Bungles are dangling Rivers. Although, I don’t know that he’s ever been the same player since Hines ward broke his face. Never really lived up to his potential as a high first rd pick outta USC. Demeco Ryans, a much more productive NFL player went for a 4th, surprisingly.
But if he’s available for a mid rd pick, Reggie should jump all over it. Change of scenery might do him some good.
I’d like to see Oakland take that shot. Could be a steal.
April 11th, 2012 at 9:29 am
So Moss wasn’t one of the best WRs when we traded for him?
As it turns out, no he wasn’t.
D Ryans was traded for a 4th, so does that mean he is not one of the best MLBs?
Apparently not.

April 11th, 2012 at 9:40 am
A couple contracts would have to be restructured if Rivers was going to come on board. Maybe even Rivers himself. He has a first-round contract, pre-rookie wage scale.
Lack of interest in Rivers might signal that the Raiders don’t want to invest heavily in a player who doesn’t have much value in a “multiple” defense. But then, I don’t think Rivers would necessarily be out of place as an ILB. And he’d certainly be an upgrade at WLB over Curry.
Still, I think the Giants-Bengals deal is as good as done.

Productive players sometimes get traded for mid-round picks. That’s the nature of the league. Has little to do with their value as a player – more to do with their value to their team.
April 11th, 2012 at 9:42 am
You are right J. Look at his prev #s with the Vikings before we traded for him. He was considered the best WR in the game, and the Vikings traded him.

I guess it all depends on that you consider “the best”.
Let me ask you this question, why would a team try and get rid of “one of the best players at his position” in the NFL?
CLEARLY, that players current team doesn’t feel that he is one of the best at his position.
Maybe Minnesota felt that Moss was a product of playing with Chris Carter, Robert Smith, and Culpepper?
I still haven’t seen you throw out Moss’ Raider stats that would indicate we go one of the best WRs in the league? What happened to him once he had to play on grass and didn’t have Chris Carter next to him?

The 1987 NFL season was the 68th regular season of the National Football League. A 24-day players’ strike reduced the 16-game season to 15. The games that were scheduled for the third week of the season were canceled, but the games for weeks 4–6 were played with replacement players. 85% of the veteran players did not cross picket lines during the strike.
The replacement player teams were given mock names like “Chicago Spare Bears”, “San Francisco Phoney Niners”, “New Orleans Saint Elsewheres”, “Washington ScabSkins”, and “Seattle Sea-scabs”.[1] Final television revenues were down by about 20%, a smaller drop than the networks had expected.[2] The defending Super Bowl Champion New York Giants went 0–3 in replacement games, ultimately costing them a chance to make the playoffs and repeat their championship.

The Giants have had “some discussions” with free agent LB Chase Blackburn about a return.
The Giants would have re-signed Blackburn by now, obviously, if they were intent on retaining him. Blackburn closed out last season as the Giants’ starting middle linebacker. They want to get better at the position this year.

Seaturds still due a 5th rounder in 2013 for Aaron Curry, but it could be a 4th rounder depending on how much Curry plays. So it would behoove the Raiders to shop for a LB in the draft.

Kinda funny that Rivers was traded b/c of the play of that guy they signed last year Thomas Howard? Rivers injury gave Thomas Howard the oppurtunity and netted us a draft pick!

Irvin has to be used in the right role.
He’d be best at OLB and rotational RDE. Good enough lateral agility to cover in the flats, can attack the LOS. But as an every-down DE he’d be overmatched.

Haven’t followed Fuller. Know that injuries slowed him down a little bit as a senior, so his draft stock took a hit. Was projected to be a fringe 1st round pick going into the season. Other than that, don’t know much about him.

Whatever Carolina is doing with Scam Newton, than Knapp needs to do the same with Pryor when he is in there.
Newton and Pryor are the same type of player with the same skill set, the difference is that Scam throws a better ball consistently.

Good! If anything, McK needs to try and stockpile future picks.
Heck, I wonder if McK can get a 3rd Rounder for Kelly in this years draft or maybe even steal a teams 2nd Rounder in next years draft for Kelly?
Hmm…

2011 Packers draft from 3rd round on:
#96 overall – Alex Green, RB, Hawaii. Played special teams and had 3 carries for 11 yards & 1 catch for 6 yards before shredding his knee in Week 7
#131 overall – Davon House, CB, New Mexico State. Dressed for 2 games last year, inactive the rest. Recorded 1 tackle.
#141 overall – DJ Williams, TE, Arkansas. Dressed for 13 games last year. Recorded 2 catches for 13 yards backing up Jermichael Finley. Seemed to be mostly a blocker.
#179 overall – Caleb Schlauderaff, G, Utah. Traded him to the Jets before the final round of roster cuts.
#186 overall – DJ Smith, OLB, Appalachian State. Dressed for all 16 games, playing a reserve role. Recorded 43 tackles, 0 sacks, 1 INT, 1 pass defensed.
#197 overall – Ricky Elmore, DE, Arizona. Was waived as part of the final roster cutdown to 53. Not sure if he was signed to the practice squad or not
#218 overall – Ryan Taylor, TE, North Carolina. Dressed for 15 games last year, recording 1 catch for 4 yards, which also happened to be a touchdown. Again seemed to be mostly a blocker.
#233 overall – Lawrence Guy, DT, Arizona State. As far as I can tell he made the roster but was a healthy scratch all 16 games.

Houston and Bryant would be taking Kellys snaps inside and of course Seymour is in there as well. With ShoNasty will be the LDE or moved to RDE and Tollefson will play LDE possibly.
Draft Kelly’s replacement hopefully in Round 3 or Round 4 in this years draft.
McK may also try and sign bargain FA NT maybe….who knows.
If McK can get a 2nd Rounder in next years draft for Kelly, it would be hard to not pull the trigger I would think.
