WR Calhoun added to roster
By Jerry McDonald - NFL Writer
Friday, April 20th, 2012 at 9:55 am in Oakland Raiders.
The Raiders announced the signing of wide receiver Duke Calhoun, who last played with the New York Giants and was a participant in the club’s voluntary minicamp this week.
Calhoun, 6-foot-2, 195 pounds, was undrafted out of Memphis in 2010 but made the Giants, playing in nine games and catching one pass for four yards. He was waived injured from the roster last September before reaching an injury settlement.
A highly productive receiver in college, Calhoun caught 212 passes for 2,981 yards and 19 touchdowns in 41 games.

I would take A. Samuel for a 6th rounder, doubt we could afford him though. Maybe C. Bailey will fall into our lap when Denver gets Asante.
April 20th, 2012 at 10:11 am
By the looks of the pics.
It seems like Saunders has been more involved w/ the team coaching, than Knapp.

It’s kind of funny last year at this time, most were saying we don’t need an old vet….that we should let the young core of receivers grow into a solid unit.

@ G123
I wanted Terrell Owens last offseason (ask bcz!)
turns out he wasn’t fully healthy until midseason, as predicted by 99% of the semi pros and nobody gave him a look
After the preseason I was sold on Derek Hagan, but we all know how that turned out. Hue Jackson = p.o.s.

I’d take Owens over Simpson or Burress. Owens hasn’t been in trouble with the law, and won’t be a candidate for suspension and won’t be a locker room cancer. He’s humble and hungry now
***
@ G123
I would STILL take Owens, especially since he’s been working out with Palmer and the other Raider WR’s this offseason. That tells me Palmer is cool with him and would welcome him, if signed. They didn’t clash in Cincy. Owens signed for next to nothing and outplayed OchoCinco. T.O. also has a history with Knapp (OC in SF)
Seems like Allen has handed the keys to the offense over to Knapp. I imagine if Knapp & Palmer were both in Reggie’s ear about signing Owens for 1-year @ the vet minimum he’d be a Raider already. I think Knapp remembers the behavior Terrell displayed in SF and wouldn’t touch him with a 10-ft pole. As you state, he’s hungry & humble now. The guy just wants to play football (signed with the IFL!). He’s a proven. We can’t say that about any of our WR’s right now, even though some of them have tremendous potential
April 20th, 2012 at 10:21 am
@ RRS,
I wasn’t down with Owens last year because of his lack of health. He wasn’t even running until week 9 or so if I remember correctly. But now things have changed and he’s healthy and still has some left in the tank. I’ll take him over J Simpson and his outstanding court date/NFL suspension or Burress and his attitude.
I give big time props to him working out with our young wideouts this offseason. TO is a pro.
I too liked Hagan and was mad to see him cut. That was one of the first moves (that and throwing soup under the bus) that lost me on Hue.

April 20th, 2012 at 10:26 am
Sorry, got busy for a bit…
I read Police Story (good Jackie Chan movies) and I forgot about Bruce LeRoy…lol!
I think Hero and Fearless will be on the list as well!!!
April 20th, 2012 at 10:26 am
If Branch doesn’t sign his extension before the draft, I could see us taking a safety to solidify the rotation. Ideally, we want Branch long term, but Reggie Mck is going to play hardball to get his point across.
Still, I predict they will get a deal done prior to the first pick announcement. Just a hunch.
April 20th, 2012 at 10:28 am
After the preseason I was sold on Derek Hagan, but we all know how that turned out. Hue Jackson = p.o.s.

Man I hate that guy.
It is a testament to our players that they were able to win 8 games despite Hue’s theatrics.

you think Tyvon takes the offer thats on the table within the next week?
April 20th, 2012 at 10:31 am
What we should do, is sign TO to a vet min contract with incentives.
But a taaaaaaad different, put the incentives for other WR’s. I am sure it is illegal, but I would rather give TO a million dollar bonus for working hard with D-Moore throughout the week and helping him turn into a 1,300 yard receiver, than pay TO a million dollar bonus for him to selfishly want the ball all season for his own 1,000 yard season.
April 20th, 2012 at 10:33 am
On TO, I think the dude can help, but the problem might come if we lose a couple in a row. A team with good heart can come back from that and keep fighting. But with TO, the media circus will start and then they’ll be BEGGING him to say something stupid. He may or may not say something. But either way the focus on the team could be lost at that point.
April 20th, 2012 at 10:33 am
The pond would probably be good for you…
April 20th, 2012 at 10:36 am
you think Tyvon takes the offer thats on the table within the next week?
********
I do. It’s in both his and the Raiders interest to not draft a safety, but if it comes to that point, TB will have lost a lot of his bargaining power. I’m sure the deal on the table is fairly rich.

Wait, how can TO execute on these incentives? He can’t catch Moore’s balls for him. He can’t decide if Palmer is going to throw Moore the ball or not. He can only run his routes and if he’s getting open and outplaying Moore, so be it. Moore needs to be the #1, but it would do him wonders to have a TO opposite of him commanding respect and drawing the coverage away from him.
April 20th, 2012 at 10:41 am
Regarding fear of the “media circus”, I’m not afraid of it anyway. The media hates us no matter what we do. There is no pleasing them. The best revenge on the media is putting up 10 to 11 wins and winning the AFC West. Then the media will be all over our nuts. But who cares a whit what they think?

I’m saying TO is known as an all-world workout guy, that is the best thing he could provide to the team, is lead the youngsters on Wednesday afternoons.
That could help guys like D-Moore emerge as big-time WR’s.
It was somewhat tongue-in-cheek, but the point was to give incentives to TO to make his fellow WR’s better, not for him to want the ball.

Anyone know when Slow gets his day in court ?
Wonder if he’ll plead not guilty and go to trial.
Guess that would mean some time away from camp and the team.
I believe he could expedite matters by pleading guilty and probably wouldn’t face any serious punishment from the legal system – but that would open the door for Roger to take some sort of action, like a suspension.
Whatchya gonna do Slow ?
Freaking idiot.

#36,
I agree about TO leading by example. He keeps his body ripped and tip top condition, works out better than most NFL WR’s who are still addicted to their X-boxes. D. Moore and co. can learn a lot from having TO around on Wednesday practices. I see no downside in a vet minimum incentive laden deal.

No, I don’t think the team will be sidetracked. TO is on the outside looking in at the NFL now. Working out for free with our young wideouts hungry for a chance to play again. As far as young players are concerned, I’m sure that it helps to have Carson Palmer at the helm running things in the huddle and keeping everyone focused.

Personally, I want TO to “want the ball”. I want every one of our wideouts to want the ball. They all need to have a “my-ball” mentality. The beta-males need not apply.

I dunno man, younger folks are a HELLA of lot more media sensitive then 20 years ago. Some of the playas even read this blog with all its insanity. Everyone is plugged in now, and these dudes are like in their 20s, hard for them NOT to be exposed to the TO game.
Carson could lead them, but it is another variable for sure.
I agree with the idea that TO makes the team better short term, (see the eagles before and after him) but then again, why would all the teams dump him Buff. SF, Dallas, Phily, Cinci.–its really wierd.
It just seems that Reggie is putting together a hungry team with the will to win and getting rid of the opportunists.
Maybe TOs last stand? If he is hungry and drama free, but thats like hoping Chaz Schilens will be injury free

@ Raidertalk,
Our core group of wideouts are young, but I don’t think they buy all the media hype that is preprogrammed around Owens. They worked out with him personally and they know better about what he’s about. He works really hard and is dedicated to his craft. He’s not a felon/convict, but internally does everything with a focus on being a true pro. That’s the kind of guy you want out of a developing corp. The guys that wilt under the pressure of Owens shadow would have hit their potential anyway. Owens would be doing us a favor in exposing them. The ones that step up are the guys we count on into the future.

It was somewhat tongue-in-cheek, but the point was to give incentives to TO to make his fellow WR’s better, not for him to want the ball——————————————————————
I get what your saying. Make the incentives based on production of other recievers. If they gain 750yds each he gets $$$ something on that level. Might work. I think and have thought we should get his as soon as I saw him workin out with C.P.3

Cliff would be great in the 5th or 6th round.

And damn it, if I have to go another season with this ridiculously awful punt return game!!!!!
April 20th, 2012 at 12:23 pm

I think it’s a lock they will get Claiborne at 5, with Cleveland selecting T. Richardson. All this is predicated on Minnesota taking Kahlil @3.
April 20th, 2012 at 12:31 pm
Disagree. Unless Minnesota takes him, Claiborne is their man. Gilmore might even be an option there.
April 20th, 2012 at 12:32 pm
I think it’s a lock they will get Claiborne at 5, with Cleveland selecting T. Richardson. All this is predicated on Minnesota taking Kahlil @3.
================
Minnesota really is the wild card there. If they take Blackmon at #3 that team deserves to suck.
April 20th, 2012 at 12:33 pm
I don’t see a trade with Minnesota at #3, because the previous Rams/Redskins trade ruined the market. For a team in the top 6 or 7 to trade up to #3, they would have to give up a high second rounder. I don’t think anyone is willing to do that.
April 20th, 2012 at 12:35 pm
Justin Blackmon = David Boston
Will be OK for a minute, but ultimately too large a frame to play WR for 8-10 years in the NFL.
April 20th, 2012 at 12:35 pm
I think the real wildcard is if someone is in a position to trade with Cleveland to try for Tannehill. But that would be a bizzare move, and a bad one to boot.
April 20th, 2012 at 12:35 pm
It wouldn’t surprise me if the Vikings took Michael Floyd at #3, to be honest.
That team has a ton of holes, but it seems like LT is most glaring. How much value do they place on that position, though?
April 20th, 2012 at 12:37 pm
Some team always does something screwy in the first 10 picks.
Draft a guy they like, who most thought was a late 1st rounder.
A good candidate this year might be the Hightower kid from ‘Bama. Probably should be picked in the 20’s, but some team might love him and take him 7th or something like that.
April 20th, 2012 at 12:37 pm
Eaglses only want a 5th or a 6th for Samuels? (NFL.com)

==================
Yeah, Blackmon really isn’t anything special. The media wants him to be this year’s A.J. Green, but he’s not nearly that talented. Not fast, doesn’t separate, not really explosive after the catch. A big red zone guy… but that can be found later in the draft.
Michael Floyd is the most polished, complete WR in the draft. But even then, if I’m an NFL team and I have more holes to fill than WR, I’m waiting on that position. I’d be happy to take Marvin Jones in the 2nd or 3rd.
April 20th, 2012 at 12:38 pm
IF your going to commit to Ponder, you have to get the LT to go with him.
Ponder is certainly not made of granite.
April 20th, 2012 at 12:38 pm
Vikings would be retarded if they chose anyone but kahlil @3. Really a no brainer at a pos of need.
April 20th, 2012 at 12:40 pm
Samuel is also overrated.
Gets burned A LOT. Big-time gambler.
He has pretty good instincts on his gambles though, and if he could catch, he would have a dozen picks a year.
I remember the Sports Guy broke down one year with Samuels and legitimately made the point he could have had 20 INT’s one year, but he drops picks every week.
April 20th, 2012 at 12:40 pm
I see Blackmon going at #8 to Miami.
I see Tannehill going at #11 to the Chiefs, unless a team trades up.
April 20th, 2012 at 12:41 pm
I don’t think a Marvin Jones could slip, maybe. I’ve seen him down in the low 90’s in some mocks. I’d gladly take him at 95. Now that’s Reggie Mac value.
Or maybe Mike Adams OSU, if he slips because of the failed drug test.
April 20th, 2012 at 12:42 pm
I would have no problem with Marvin Jones being the pick at #95. That would be an incredible value.
April 20th, 2012 at 12:43 pm
I think the mold of CB’s we need to follow is in guys like Bartell. Big 6′1″ plus 210 guys who are still athletic to stick to their man. Lay off the speed demon smurf CB’s please.
April 20th, 2012 at 12:43 pm
Some team is going to move up in the top 10 to get Tannehill, than massively regret it 4 years from now.
April 20th, 2012 at 12:44 pm
Claiborne might be relatively short, but that dude has longer arms than Kirkpatrick and Gilmore. He’s going to be a good player.
April 20th, 2012 at 12:46 pm
Tannehill has what 20 college games under his belt? The hype machine is going overdrive on this guy, some comparing him to RG3. Really?
drafting him is going to be like going all-in with the second best hand at the table.
April 20th, 2012 at 12:47 pm
I think Claiborne’s a lock at #5 to the Bucs. Ronde Barber is already working at safety in minicamp in anticipation. Bucs have already tipped their cap.
April 20th, 2012 at 12:51 pm
drafting him is going to be like going all-in with the second best hand at the table.

I think it is a greater gamble than that.
I’ve done fairly decent in my time going all in with the pocket Jacks, lol.
April 20th, 2012 at 12:51 pm
I like DeQuan Menzie a lot as a DB prospect. Could play either CB or FS. Aggressive corner. Good on the blitz. Physical. Can press or play zone. Definitely a nice sleeper prospect – though it wouldn’t surprise me to see him drafted earlier than most think. General consensus is that he’s a 4th or 5th round prospect, but he could conceivably go in the 3rd.

The Oakland Raiders completed their three-day voluntary veteran mini-camp on Thursday. The players and coaches had a chance to work together on the field, install plays, focus on fundamentals, and understand coaching and learning styles.
“Mini-camp was great,” said offensive tackle Jared Veldheer. “All the team was able to get together with all the new pieces. I think we’re definitely building; you can see guys getting better at certain techniques and everybody working toward the goal we want to accomplish, which is to win a championship. So it’s a great first step and looking forward to starting back again when we start up OTAs.”
WR Louis Murphy enjoyed the first mini-camp of the 2012 season. “It was good,” said Murphy. “It was good to be back with the entire team, see some new faces, and good to get out with the coaches and get these new plays put in. It was a real good experience.”
The mini-camp was beneficial for many reasons, one of which was getting to know the coaches in a practice setting. “It was good, a lot of fun,” said LB Carl Ihenacho. “Actually had an opportunity to get together with the coaches, the d-coordinator. [It was] lots of fun; saw a lot of guys running around.”
The coaching staff emphasized fundamentals throughout the three-day mini-camp. “Fundamentals are the important thing because the first thing that goes in a game with fatigue is fundamentals,” explained Veldheer. “So if you build those fundamentals up, the more tired you get in the 4th quarter, those fundamentals are still going to be there. So the emphasis on that, I think it makes us a stronger team down the stretch.”
Murphy also understood the importance of focusing on fundamentals. “It’s going to help us out a lot,” said Murphy. “In the 4th quarter, when it’s gets tough, it goes down to your fundamentals. It was just good to learn the new staff and to get out there with the fellas.”
The Raiders off-season program continues next week as the players head back into the weight room to work with the strength and conditioning staff.

WR Calhoun added to roster
By Jerry McDonald – NFL Writer

Everyone mentions how he is learning to catch with his hands, which is great. But his biggest problem is still learning things “natural” receivers do instinctively.. like turning into a defender when the ball is thrown poorly, or do anything AT ALL with a poorly thrown ball (or even one not in an expected spot) besides acting hopeless.
A top level coaching staff should be able to correct this.
He’s learned everything else thus far.

Reminiscent of JaMoron.
As was the case with JaMoron, I question just how ‘talented’ Slow is.
JaMoron had a cannon for an arm. That, and his size, were his only talents.
I submit that even if JaMoron stayed in top physical shape and showed some desire, he’d still have been an NFL failure and complete bust.
Why ? Because he’s a moron. Incomprehensible blathering idiots don’t stand a chance of being successful NFL QBs.
Slowlando ? The only ‘talent’ I’ve seen so far is his extraordinary length which allows him to be decent in coverage.
Had the reputation of being a heady, film junky and diagnostician at Bama. Haven’t seen much evidence of this in the NFL yet.
Guess we’ll find out exactly how talented Slow is.
That’s if he can manage to keep his head on straight and stay out of trouble.
Even that is a big IF.
