Report: Jets exec could join scouting staff

By Jerry McDonald - NFL Writer
Tuesday, April 24th, 2012 at 2:58 pm in Oakland Raiders.

General manager Reggie McKenzie could be reunited with former high school and college teammate Joey Clinkscales, according to an ESPNNewYork.com report.

Clinkscales, the New York Jets director of college scouting since 2008, will part with the organization, according to league sources, with Oakland the likely destination.

McKenzie, the first general manager other than Al Davis to run the Raiders draft room since 1963, said following the hiring of coach Dennis Allen he didn’t expect to make any changes in the scouting department until after the draft.

Clinkscales was the quarterback at Austin-East High School in Knoxville, Tenn., while McKenzie and his brother Raleigh were two-way players. Clinkscales also went to Tennessee along with the McKenzies.

During the offseason, Clinkscales interviewed for the general manager position for the St. Louis Rams.

Don’t worry, blog bros – they can’t keep The Beeech Diggity or 2 Kewl 4 Skool down

    Here’s the bottom line:

    1) Krappy is a cowardly rat/tattletale. He runs to the mod of a football blog because I mention some names of realtors in his stupid office in a hilarious context? The same office who’s web site he’s posted on this blog dozens of times? And believe me when I say – I’ve never called nor ever will call the old goat at his place of pretend work, his 1 bd apt. or his glorious chateau in Switzerland

    2) Corkran/Becker are spineless wimps. Let me get this straight – they get an email from a mentally challenged, unemployed, 60+ year old racist blogger ordering them to ban another blogger and THEY ACTUALLY LISTEN TO HIM?

That’s like 2 kids get in a fight, the one who lost runs to tell the teacher, and she automatically kicks the other one out of school no questions asked.

Don’t care if they ban me, but at least be men about it. Cowering down to Krappy is about as low as you can sink. Losers.

Yo, this is a sweet rap I wrote while chillin’ behind blog bars

It’s all about Krappy and Becker making passionate love to one another over and over again without protection

It’s called “A Tale of 2 Blog Idiots”. This pile of crap isn’t going on any of my albums

The truest gay love under any sun
Two male heartbeats beating as one
First Becker removes Krappy’s pants, then sheds a tear
He holds Krappy tight and whispers “I love you, my dear”
Their passion burns throughout the night
As they surrender to one another’s male delights
In the morning they awake to a pain in their sacks
Alas, their love was consummated while going bareback

The problem with a new stadium as the 49ers are finding out is that it will be so overpriced to get tickets that most of us will not be able to attend the games.

They are talking about it costing 30K for seat licenses and another 25K for season tickets over a 5 year period.

How can your average Joe afford to pay 50,000 to watch football?

So lets say they do build a new stadium here in Oakland most of us will not be able to afford the seat licenses.

Which could cause a problem in filling the new stadium up if it is built.

    ================================================

The Gholston boner aside (and EVERY GM has had a lousy draft or two — heck, Ryan Leaf singled-handedly kept Bobby Beathard out of the Hall of Fame), Clinkscales is well-regarded.

As for Cronyism, I remember reading some interview with Reggie where he basically acknowledged that this is his “make-it-or-break-it” job. If he succeeds here, he can write his own ticket. If he fails, he’ll go back to being a personnel guy, and that will be it.

NFL Network’s Jason LaCanfora believes “things could get interesting” if the Giants are offered a third-round pick for DE Osi Umenyiora this week.
LaCanfora appears to be taking the pulse of his league connections as opposed to reporting news. The Giants were seeking a first-round pick last offseason, when Umenyiora still had two years left on a team-friendly contract and Jason Pierre-Paul had yet to emerge as perhaps the league’s most dangerous defensive end.

Jets Scouting VP coming to Oakland?

    04-24-12 1:35 pm pac

    http://www.raidernationstation.com/raider_war_room

    Sal Paolantonio wrote earlier today:

“The New York Jets and their top college-talent evaluator will likely part ways in the coming weeks, sources stated on Tuesday, creating a cloud of uncertainty in the organization as it prepares for a critical draft later this week.

Joey Clinkscales, the Jets’ vice president of college scouting since 2008, has drawn interest from the Oakland Raiders, sources said. A final decision hasn’t been made, but some believe there will be a mutual parting, with Clinkscales leaving for what would appear to be a lateral move to work under new Raiders general manager Reggie McKenzie.

Clinkscales interviewed for St. Louis Rams’ GM vacancy earlier in the offseason. In 2008, he interviewed for the same position with the Dolphins.

McKenzie and Clinkscales were College team mates at Tennessee in 1980 and have remained good friends.”

There have been some serious clunkers under Clinkscales command including adonis mega bust Vernon Gholston who walked with zero production and $20 mill guaranteed.

In fact, Paolantonio also points out:

“Over the last three years, the Jets were active in the trade market and drafted only 13 players, including four current starters. No draft pick since Revis (drafted in 2007) has made a Pro Bowl.”

Thats not exacly a stellar record to be coming off of but IF this does come to pass and Joey Clinkscales comes aboard, lets hope Reggie’s gut is the one making the final decisions and that Clinker is merely there to gather, sort data and facilitate trades.”

I doubt Corky would pay any attention to KK at all. Plus I have never seen any post from you on this blog that Corky would forbid regarding race-baiting, disrespect of AD and the Raiders, or over the line vipertuous statements of a scathing and hateful nature against anyone.

    ———————
Obviously this past season he only played in so many games but I liked what I saw the year before and I don’t know if you can pin the Raiders inability to stop the run on him. I wouldn’t mind Osi coming to Oak town but just not at the expense of a young talent that will flourish under the new system (feel free to save this) I will be happy to revisit this conversation half way thru the season.

    Dan,

Oh really ??? Corky said, Beech had crossed the line, in the chat today ?? I wonder what line Beech crossed. I doubt if was race baiting, disrespect, scurrilous statements regarding the Raiders….

So Beeech supposedly “crossed the line” in response to KK attacks on him ?

And btw, KK claimed to me that he ratted me out to Corky while I was posting under AL D. Davis.

    $$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$

    Beeech,

I doubt Corky would pay any attention to KK at all. Plus I have never seen any post from you on this blog that Corky would forbid regarding race-baiting, disrespect of AD and the Raiders, or over the line vipertuous statements of a scathing and hateful nature against anyone.

Solicitation of hookers telephone numbers on the blog probably qualifies for banishment; if KK did squeal he probably squealed using that request, and emailing to Corky.

    ——————————

I’d at least have an inkling of respect for Becker if he locked down the Beeech Diggity for posting the names of realtors in Krappy’s office (that he hasn’t been to in 10 years)

But if it was over my request for working lady’s phone #s, that’s the weakest mod move ever

    Mayock’s position-by-position rankings

With the 2012 NFL Draft nearly here, Mike Mayock has unveiled his top 100 prospect rankings

    ***

    @ G123

so if the draft falls this way (and it wont), which player would you select ??

    95. Trevor Guyton, DE, California
    96. Donald Stephenson, OT, Oklahoma
    97. Ryan Broyles, WR, Oklahoma
    98. Bobby Wagner, OLB, Utah State
    99. Robert Turbin, RB, Utah State
    100. Zach Brown, OLB, North Carolina

    ^^^^^^^^
In that situation the pick would have to come down to Wagner, Turbin or Brown

If it McK goes by best overall player available?

Then it would be hard to pass on Turbin. I think Turbin can be a dynamic player in the NFL. Reminds me a little of MJD, just a bit bigger.

  89. GG Says:

    Time for a usual GG left-field prediction…

Reggie will trade a high-profile or high-profilish offensive player to get into the 1st or 2nd round.

    Why?

With Greg Knapp as OC, that means the offense will be generally not-flashy, performing well with bits and pieces type players. Basically, it’s very system-orientated under Knapp, zone-blocking, WCO, roll-outs and quick hits. Like Shanahan getting 1,000 yard rushers with mid-late round talent.

The clear direction of this team, with a defensive minded HC now, is going to be defense. The team will try to play SOUNDLY on offense with a very system-orientated mindset, and focus more on being a powerhouse defense, which will require more talent and draft focus on defense.

    Who?

Impossible to predict. Palmer would be a good choice to get a 1st out of a team in need of a QB, but it would seem very unlikely. McFadden could be possible. Maybe a combination like Murphy-Kelly for a mid 2nd. Or Shaughnessy for a 2nd. etc.

I do believe the Raiders are going to be more 3-4 than 4-3 even if they go hybrid. They are expressly thin at ILB, need a few more 3-4 OLBs, and need a NT. They have plenty of 3-tech 4-3 UTs that will convert to 5-tech type 3-4 DE’s.

Either McKenzie or Allen did mention in a previous article weeks ago that their main focus on defense is going to be “all about the linebacker position” from a system sense.

The only offensive moves I can see Reggie making are… a power HB (if he trades McFadden), but definitely a WR (late round sleeper) and a very capable ready-to-start Center with zone blocking experience (brewster imo).

  90. GG Says:

Reece would be an asset in a WCO offense. But I can also see the Raiders potentially trading Reece (in a package?) to acquire a more brutal blocking FB in the late rounds a la Texans offense.

An alternative line of thinking could be trading McFadden, going with Goodson as #1, Reece as the power back, Taiwan as the #3. Or if Lonyae Miller steps up he could be the power back and Reece traded.

    Some possible combinations? Reece+Murphy for a high 2nd? McFadden for a 1st. Palmer for a 1st.

Report: Jets exec could join scouting staff

By Jerry McDonald – NFL Writer

Louis Rams.

  128. Five Gallon Oil Can Says:

    Al Davis

    July 4, 1929 – October 8, 2011

An unyielding total commitment to excellence has marked the three-time World Champion Raiders monumental rise during the last 52 years to the very top of the professional sports world.

In these memorable 52 years, the Raiders have had 28 winning seasons, including 16 in a row from 1965 through the 1980 World Championship season. In 34 of those seasons, the Raiders earned a record of .500 or better.

Al Davis’ six-decade professional football story, from assistant coach of the Chargers, to head coach and general manager of the Raiders, to Commissioner of the American Football League and finally to principal owner and president of the general partner of The Oakland Raiders — is a standard that no one in the history of professional football can match for winning and excellence.

In April 1966, the then 36-year-old Davis, head coach and general manager of the Raiders, became Commissioner of the American Football League. This was a post he accepted reluctantly, for first and foremost, Al Davis was a football coach and knew that assuming the Commissionership would in all probability mean an end to his coaching career.

But AFL owners, in their battle with the rival National Football League, prevailed on Davis to accept the position. He was described by AFL President and Buffalo Bills Owner Ralph Wilson as “a coaching genius and astute administrator.”

Just eight weeks later, when pro football’s two major leagues put an end to their six-year war, Davis was acclaimed nationally as the driving force who brought the leagues to merge. In 1969, he was once again a prime force in the dramatic realignment of professional football when two, 13-team conferences — the AFC and NFC — were formed for 1970.

As a member of the NFL Management Council’s Executive Committee, Davis has been a major factor in achieving collective bargaining agreements with the players.

Al Davis first came to the Raiders in January 1963, dedicated to rescuing the faltering Oakland franchise and building the finest organization in professional sports. Just 33, Davis was the youngest man in pro football to hold the demanding dual positions of head coach and general manager.

But Davis already possessed 14 years coaching experience. He had been tabbed a “young coaching genius” by Sports Illustrated and “the most inventive mind in the country” by Scholastic Coach Magazine.

The Raiders — “picked to finish dead last” — thundered to a 10-4 record and just missed the Division Championship. In 1963, Davis was named Pro Football Coach of the Year.

Perhaps his most singular honor is having made a record nine presentations of inductees to the Pro Football Hall of Fame in Canton, Ohio . The nine great enshrinees to have selected Al Davis to make the presentation speeches on their behalf are Lance Alworth, Jim Otto, George Blanda, Willie Brown, Gene Upshaw, Fred Biletnikoff, Art Shell, Ted Hendricks and John Madden.

Davis himself became enshrined on Aug. 1, 1992 when he was presented for induction into the Pro Football Hall of Fame by Madden. In May of 1991, Al Davis became the very first recipient of the NFL Players Association’s Retired Players Award of Excellence “for his contributions to the men who played the game.” Born July 4, 1929, Al Davis was raised in Brockton, Mass. and moved at an early age to Brooklyn, N .Y. He attended Wittenberg College and Syracuse University, earning a degree in English while participating in football, basketball and baseball. Al Davis received a Letterman of Distinction Award from Syracuse University. In March of 1998, Davis was inducted into the NFL Alumni’s “Order of the Leather Helmet,” presented annually to “Individuals who have made significant contributions to the game of professional football.”

On Dec. 29, 1999, the Oakland Tribune and the Alameda Newspaper Group named Al Davis as the Bay Area’s most significant sports figure of the 20th Century on a list that included such greats as Joe Montana, Willie Mays, Joe DiMaggio and Bill Russell. The Orange Bowl inducted Davis into its Hall of Fame in 2001.

In 1950, Davis was named line coach at Adelphi College in New York. He then went into the Army, being assigned as head football coach at Ft . Belvoir, Va. There he molded a national power service team and capped one season by defeating the University of Maryland, National Collegiate Champions, in a squad game.

Davis next served on the staff of the NFL’s Baltimore Colts in 1954, at age 24, concentrating on player personnel work . During 1955-56, he was line coach and chief recruiter at The Citadel. He then spent three years at the University of Southern California as line coach.

In 1960, Head Coach Sid Gillman hired Davis as offensive end coach of the newly formed Los Angeles Chargers. After two Division Championships in just three years there, it was on to meet the challenges with the Raiders of Oakland in 1963.

Based on personal achievement, team achievement and contributions to the game, no one has had a more profound and lasting impact on professional football. In recognition of his status in pro football annals, NFL Films produced a film entitled, “AL DAVIS, NO. 1 FOR ALL TIME .”

Mark Davis Says he wants the Raiders in Oakland:
A future that Davis insists he’d like to preserve in Oakland, where the team has operated, with mixed results, since 1995. His personal second choice also is in the Bay Area, the Camp Parks site in Dublin.

“Oakland is my preference, though,” he said. “I see us as an urban team, being in a city. I want it to work here. I’d like to stay here.Davis said he was “impressed” by a recent meeting with civic officials representing Oakland in its attempt to retain the Raiders — as well as the A’s and the Warriors — with a proposed project on the Coliseum Complex footprint that would contain three facilities, providing separate space for baseball and football. hat Oakland might be getting its act together. Previous sessions were genial, Davis said, but always felt unproductive.

“They brought in the right people this time,” he said, “and those people said the right things. There’s a vision. It’s a positive step. We’ll meet again soon to see if we can actually get something done.”

Davis said he is not courting Los Angeles. He emphatically denied a recent report that he joined Southern California developer Ed Roski, who is chasing a franchise for L.A., at a Clippers basketball game.

“I have Clippers season tickets, just like I have Warriors season tickets, but Ed Roski was not sitting with me,” he said. “Why would I do that? I wouldn’t. That’s not how I plan to do things.”

Coach did not leave the franchise in shambles. They are on the doorstep and once again poised for greatness. Coach rebuilt the foundation. Besides, when the entire league is out to get you, through officiating, its a uphill battle. But Coach was a fighter.

I dont hate Al Davis because of the lean times. I suffered with him as would any Raider fan. We are not fair weather fans. We take the good with the bad.

What’s happened to the franchise since those guys left?

    ……………………………………………….

I don’t know. What’s happened to you since you stopped taking your Metamucil?

  159. arkraider Says:

Al made many mistakes towards the end. We all know this but no matter how poorly he did in the last couple of decades, that can never take away his singular vision and success earlier. It’s not like he was the only overbearing owner who made bad moves from time to time.

Regardless, the Al Davis era is over so now all you Al haters are gonna have to blame somebody else now.

Give it a rest. Spend that energy rooting for the Raiders to have success now.

  160. Bad News Dude Says:

KK, surely even you can appreciate a man that spit in the face of racism.

  161. KoolKell Says:

When you people can’t deal with me, you instantly go to personal attacks.

  162. Bad News Dude Says:

Give it a rest. Spend that energy rooting for the Raiders to have success now.

    ……………………………………………

Until KK starts throwing back the Metamucil once again, he’s going to be spending his energy elsewhere. Catch my drift?

  163. The Beeech Dawg Says:

KrappyRat, when’s your next sad attempt to get me banned? So sorry that whole thing blew up your face.

    Bummer, yes?

So, to be clear – whenever you try unsuccessfully to get someone banned, do you always make up the “they called my office” lie?

Seems to be your go-to move. Meaning a huge brick.

    Sad, sad old fool.

  164. KoolKell Says:

I love Al Davis on that account. I never hated the man, but 6 playoff appreances in 25 years, was enough.

  165. KoolKell Says:

Bad news Dude, whatever, whoever, if you had any skills, you wouldn’t have to to the lame Metamucil card.

  167. No Mas Diamante Says:

Ok. Here’s the bottom line on Al: Young Al was a maverick and a forward thinker. He acheived success and was a proven winner.
Old Al held on stubronly to aging football philosophies, to to the detrement of his team at times. He could be mean and vindictive, but also very kind and generous. He did things his way, even if it may not have been the right way. Let’s just let the man rest in peace and move on. Look forward to a new era. It’s a perfect opportunity for those with long held grudges to start fresh with a clean slate.
Let’s just all look forward to the new era, the dawn of a new silver and black millenium.

  168. Kirk Says:

    Go Reggie.

Our first pick is Friday, right?

  169. arkraider Says:

Wanted to stay out of all the drama but I would like to bring up a couple of points to hopefully help obtain some peace in here. I’m not taking sides because both parties annoy me equally albeit in very different ways, so here’s what I have to say–

1st- snitches are not cool! and I think kk could have least confronted mb when the problem started.

#2- calling someone’s workplace for fun is not cool! This could threaten someone’s employement and ability to support their family. Fun is fun but F’in with someone’s livelihood is really not cool!

Now with the seemingly large #s on here that play games w/ aliases and troll activity, the culprit who made the phone calls could’ve been almost anyone. ( doesn’t help that apparently, kk, you published this info. Hard lesson to learn but I’m sure you’ll never do that again) Regardless whoever made the calls it was f-d up and shouldn’t happen. I can understand kk freaking out, he just should’ve handled it better because it may have been someone other than mb.

Bottom line: having fun and talkin’ stuff is fine but it needs to be kept in fun and it definitely should not jeopordize someone’s livlihood.

Like I say I’m not takin’ sides, both equally annoying!

Bad news Dude, whatever, whoever, if you had any skills, you wouldn’t have to to the lame Metamucil card.

    ……………………………………………

KK, if you had any skills you wouldn’t have had to resort to that embarrassing display in here a few nights ago. Tell me, did you disinfect your fingers after typing that smut?

  171. arkraider Says:

Oh yeah I was forgetting about the stuff you wrote a few nights ago. You should apologize for those. Doesn’t deserve calls to the workplace but really, really not cool!

  172. Bad News Dude Says:

Arkraider – those comments were directed at me and I’m not the one behind any calls to the workplace. Remove one from the other. They’re not connected. Not my style.

KK went to that filth after I owned him in here. He couldn’t take it so he aired his mom’s laundry. So sad.

  173. JLofty Says:

The worst part of this whole mess KrappyRat created is that he’s actually getting what he really wants out of it – attention.

That’s why the old fool trolls the blog night and day, just hoping to find people talking about him

Why else would he announce to the world that he got me banned? Doesn’t matter what kind of attention KrappyRat gets, as long as he gets something

Speaking of my red hot boy band 2 Kewl 4 Skool, getting ready to bust some more lyrics, got a hot jam that’s melting the gel on our pubes

So yeah, you know it’s tight

  177. JLofty Says:

He’s mostly just getting attention from you Dawg, and Dude, and of course his nemesis MB…

Me, I’d prefer to talk about what a shutdown corner looks like: Trumaine Johnson (Montana)
Well maybe in a few years. I guess I am alone on the island thinking Raiders go CB with #95 and opt for a BIG fast one. Sssok, I can stand on the island. Been there b4…

  178. arkraider Says:

Bad news, wasn’t suggesting that you were behind the calls just reiterating that calling someones workplace is not cool ( he posted info so it could’ve been anyone)

You’re right, but it’s so hard not to bust on that trolling old fool

Like how do you NOT eat 7lbs of Funyuns after smoking a massive doobie while you’re 69ing with a below average asian stripper?

  181. JLofty Says:

    How indeed!
I meant Mista not the Master.
My question is how can you eat Funyuns AND a the below avg after smoking the dubinski without drinking a tall cool glass of water? My mouth would be so pasty and parched it stick shut….

  182. The Beeech Dawg Says:

JLiggity, chowing down on a tasty stripper from the Orient is like enjoying a cool bottle of Green Tea Snapple

The only thing I gotta worry about afterward is – do I eat the Funyuns straight or dip them in a little Sriracha?

Yo, which reminds me I got these funky fresh lyrics ready to drop, 2K4S style.

Not to add fodder to whole thing, but as long as it’s still a “topic” here, I find it interesting that a guy who’s job depends ultimately on “sales”…in this case properties would be such a bummer to other people.

While trust is important in sales, equally vital if not more so is they have to LIKE you…which suggests strongly you should have a pleasent personality and be…”likeable”.

It is not a job for people who claim to “not care what anybody thinks about him”.

If u want to be a grouchy cynic then you should find another profession cuz one cannot be successful in sales with an “I don’t care what u think” attitude.

As much as this guy wants to use the bailout excuse that he’s black as the reason people aren’t liking him it has nothing to do with it.

  193. Hardline Says:

Just checking in before I crash; I see the drama continues. There are two basic truths all are missing here. But let me say that KK is receiving too much credit.

I said this before and I’ll say it again.

First truth: I doubt that Corky and the mods care about KK and the Dawg’s dispute. It’s lightweight stuff. What will really get a poster banned here comes from race baiting, completely disrespectful statements regarding the Raiders, spewing of hateful and scurrilous statements about our team, and finally unlawful acts.

Second Truth: Dawg did none of the above, except solicit phone numbers for prostitutes, which is unlawful. Therefore it follows that if Bay Area News Group did nothing to stem such solicitation, News Group would be ratifying illegal acts, be in collusion with Dawg, and also would be risking criminal accomplice liability.

When Dawg solicitated same numbers, I shook my head and said aloud, “Uh-oh!”

Now the big weird dude KK jumped right on that and squealed to Corky and his crew, and so Dawg had to be banished.

When I posted under AL D. Davis my postings were horrendously scurrilous and led, in part, to Corky’s original clamp-down. What Dawg has posted in the past couldn’t compare to the posts of AL D. Davis whatsoever. Much of the terrible stuff Al D. Davis spewed was unforgiveable.

In my defense, I didn’t say anything most posters were thinking and wanted to say, but couldn’t bring themselves to post it. One example is that I made numerous outrageous parodies about JC, who was receiving elite status accolades by many posters; I knew he was a schlub and only backup material. I was hammered and hammered hard for my parodies concerning JC in here, but in the end he left for free agency and signed as back-up QB, after a single day.

Dawg never got into anything that vicious mainly because he has a kind heart, unlike me.

As for KK, just concerning the garbage he elicted in his vile lyrics – he should be permanently banned.

  212. guest123 Says:

It looks like Chapman will be there when the Raiders pick at 95. Twitters are saying that Chapman’s ACL is an issue that will be a problem going into his rookie year. Scouts are always concerned with big guys and bum knees. Some teams have Chapman as a scratch for the first 3 rounds or even off the board.

I was up late last night watching some Chapman youtubes and other videos. He looks like a monster in those games against might LSU, eating up the running lanes. I’ll trust Reggie to his decision as he has scouts on the ground with the real info.

Reggie already said he wouldn’t take a high risk/reward player. Chapman is looking like he could be one. Still, for what is essentially a top-of-the-4th round pick, I can’t see anyone with more upside career-wise than Chapman. But, if the knee is really an issue, we better think about letting him slide. I’d still be willing to take a chance though.

  213. Bob Marley Says:

I’ve always hated drafting injured or injury-prone players, not in rounds 1-5, maybe in the the 6th or 7th since guys drafted there a longshot anyways.

That’s why I’m can’t get excited about Chapman, an otherwise fine player.

  214. bcz24 Says:

Post 209, that chick has a busted face, but that is probably one of the hottest stomachs I have ever seen on a woman.

  215. Bob Marley Says:

“we have to make’em count” Reggie said about our picks, too much risk grabbing a player coming off an ACL when he’s going to be your 1st pick and expected to contribute early, maybe if we had a couple of earlier picks.

  216. guest123 Says:

    @ 213 & 215

I understand your trepidation with injured players, and making the most of your picks, getting value, etc.

But even if Chapman is a potential PUP list candidate, or limited this year, he provides as much upside at a clear position of need going forward.

Realistically, this 2012 team isn’t primed for a Super Bowl run anyway. It’s a long process and we have to pay some dues and Reggie is going to build this team and foritify the weaknesses. It’ll take time to switch to a 3-4 anyway. Why not draft Chapman and slowly develop him when he’s healthy?

  217. guest123 Says:

For those who voted for Chapman on RRS’s @95 draft list: (I counted close to 50 votes)

Would you still want him @95 considering that other teams are taking him off their boards because of his knee issue?

If I already have your vote for the 95th pick in the 2012 NFL Draft and you would like to change it, you have until 3pm PST today (5pm Podunk time)

Anything after that will not be recognized or taken into consideration.

    Thank you,

A couple of guys who have fallen from around the middle of the top 100 (mid 2nd rounders) to out of the top 100 overnight are the top Center Peter Konz (WIS), and DE Cam Johnson (VA). They join Josh Chapman expected to fall do to injury.

  226. edward teach Says:

    216. If I may; there’s no sense drafting a guy with your first pick if he isn’t going to help you when you could take a player with that pick that could. If you don’t plan to have a guy for that position until next year, just wait until then to draft him. Chapman’s a nice player, but there will likely be someone just as capable in next year’s draft (and that guy may not have a knee problem) . McClain is a real good example of why you have to be so very careful with injury histories ; he was hampered by his for most of last season, and that kind of chronic stuff will almost certainly shorten a player’s career.

I’m still very much sold on Demario Davis, and NFL.Com so far is in agreement with me. But I don’t care about being right. I just hope we get a solid starter and don’t waste our pick at 95.

  230. guest123 Says:

    @ Ed Teach 226,

I agree with all that you said there, but most concerning to me is knee injuries on big guys. How many big guys ever recover and still manage to carry the weight later? Is there a track record of NFL NT’s that completely recover.

Remember how effective, but limited, John Henderson was late in his career.

  231. Raiderboi18 Says:

Asante Samuel might be on his way to Atlanta.,

  232. Raiderboi18 Says:

@ ED Teach are u from Oklahoma?

  233. RaiderRockstar Says:

Chapman’s ACL is an issue that will be a problem going into his rookie year. Scouts are always concerned with big guys and bum knees. Some teams have Chapman as a scratch for the first 3 rounds or even off the board.

For those who voted for Chapman on RRS’s @95 draft list: (I counted close to 50 votes)

Would you still want him @95 considering that other teams are taking him off their boards because of his knee issue?

    ***

    @G123

Reggie said he’s going into this draft looking for depth. Mentioned we needed a linebacker, but then signed Wheeler a week later. Said he’s going to take the best player available. What if Chapman is the best player, but he’s got some injury concerns? Seymour & Kelly are our DT’s this year, unless one gets cut or traded. Bryant will also be in the mix. Ivey is going to get an opportunity there. I don’t expect Seymour to be wearing a Raider uniform next season unless he has an absolute terror of a season. Bryant will be a free agent. what if Ivey is another Terdell Sands?? Chapman gives us the opportunity to go 3-4 next year or you could play him next to one of the many UT’s on the roster in a 4-3 line next year. I’m not concerned about it.

I think the secondary needs to be addressed, but I want a veteran or two added back there. Not another youngster who will need 1-3 years to develop. We already have 3 starting LB’s. If you’re looking for backup special teamers you might as well re-sign guys like Groves, Brown, Williams, Davis II or Ekejiuba and save the draft picks

For a late round pick no less. We never had a chance though, Reggie Mac “loves his picks” and we can’t bankroll Samuel

  235. edward teach Says:

    Guest,

I would say that unless you area absolutely certain that he will have a complete and long term recovery, you go on a different direction. This isn’t a luxury pick for the Raiders like Michael Bush was. Reggie has to nail this one. Just my two cents

  236. Bob Marley Says:

Players I like to get, no particular order:

    Rounds 3-5:

TE Orson Charles: Based on BPA theory.
LB Emmanuel Acho: Can play any spot, versatile, solid.
LB Sean Spence: Miami kids know how to play.
DE Malik Jackson: Versatile, room to grow and develop.
DT Jaye Howard: Athletic, nice tools, needs to focus.
DL Trevor Guyton: Solid, versatile, good depth.
CB Ron Brooks: Fast, good in the slot, great in ST’s.
CB Chase Minnifield: Experienced, could play Nickel right away.

    Rounds 6-7:

DT Marcus Forstson: Injuries slowed him, very talented.
DL Chigbo Anunoboy: Small school beast, size.
DE Tony Jerod-Eddie: Looks the part, needs work.
NT Charles Deas: Small school beast.
RB Tauren Poole: One cut back, good at blitz-pickup.
TE Derek Carrier: Pass-catching developmental prospect.

Just some guys that got my attention, a ton of players available, can’t possibly get into each one, but I liked what I found about these kids.

  237. Bob Marley Says:

By the way, the Raiders rarely, if ever, selected the players I liked, maybe it’ll change with Reggie and we pick up one or two.

  243. Bob Marley Says:

What I would like the most is to pick up a starting LDE so we can keep Houton and Bryant inside in a 4 man rotation with Seymour and Kelly.

It doesn’t matter who starts, they should all play about the same, I don’t see how opposing G/C’s can handle those 4 rotating in and out all game long.

Our guys will have fresh legs in the 4th quater and plenty of gas left for the stretch run.

  244. guest123 Says:

    @RRS,

I like your reasoning that we don’t need him till next year anyway. But I also hear the other concerns that Chapman may be a short career, oft-injured guy who’s best days may be behind him. It’s a chance a team is going to take, but how high do you reach for him and what margin of error do most teams have? My guess is the Raiders margin of error is much slimmer than other teams (in general).

I don’t believe in drafting any of the likely CB’s or safeties on the board past 95, because they are not going to be an upgrade from DVD and Chekwa. We can do just as good on the free agent market. The draft is deep with LB’s. I say load up on LB’s and have them compete. We need 2 or 3 more good LB’s heading into TC anyway.

  245. Just Fire Baby Says:

SI reported last week that Chapman’s injury WILL be an issue heading into training camp.

Not could be an issue, might be an issue; WILL be an issue.

He will have to have a LOT of upside in The Reggie’s eyes, to use our first draft pick on a guy who may start camp on the PUP list.

Well said, those 2 are huge wildcards for us, if they stay healthy and step up, our secondary should be solid and potentially a strength if Bartell and Spencer are also ready.

I still like Ron Brooks, love his potential in the slot and as a ST’s demon, but it has to be at the right spot.

Bengal’s have two # 1’s????? What the????? From who Hue Jackson from the Raiders? What Hue was fired from the Raiders and is now working for the Bengal’s? So Hue got paid out and took a number one form the Raiders and gave it to his new team “the Bengals”? New Job, two #1 picks for his new team? Got rid of an old QB and problem in Palmer for a #1 and they drafted a QB last year who is up and coming? No wonder Hue found a job back with the Bengals family. What a G move! Man!!!

  251. Just Fire Baby Says:

I like the Kheeston Randall kid from Texas as maybe a 4th or 5th round pick.

A guy who didn’t quite meet expectations in school, but is a top-flight character guy, who can be versatile in a 4-3/3-4 hybrid look, and can rush the passer.

I think I am going to update my big board Mock before Thursday. Not thinking Casey Hayward will be there at #95.

  252. guest123 Says:

    @248,

    lol,

DVD is a project, but lets see what the new coaching staff brings to the table, reports are he’s bulked up a bit as well. I’m inclined to agree that he’s more bust than boom, but he deserves at least this years TC before we send him away like we did Walter.

  253. Bob Marley Says:

DVD … The kid can’t play, and might face the Walter McFadden treatment this season.

    ————————————————–

    What makes you say that?.

He was able to stick to his man most of the time, maybe he needs to work on his ball-skills, but a CB’s primary job is to cover his man and not allow the completion, picks are a bonus.

DVD can blanket his man, that’s what matter the most.

  254. raiderjhawk Says:

I don’t like the idea of taking Chapman, the injury scares me and I just don’t think Reggie will take a guy like that.

I also agree that we don’t need anymore young late pick cb’s this year… we need to see what we got in the guys we have and go from there.

so it’s DB at #95 or not at all and grab a few LB’s ??

I can see that happening and I wouldn’t be a bit upset about it. If that does happen though, I’m hoping Reggie signs Aubrayo Franklin and/or Shaun Rogers in free agency!

maybe we get NJB from Baylor in the 4th or Fangupo in the 6th?

  256. guest123 Says:

I trust Reggie has his scouts all over Chapman’s true injury outlook. If there is a chance he could start the year on the PUP, I don’t think Reggie will take Chapman unless he falls to the 5th round.

Reggie is primed to ace this draft.

  258. Just Fire Baby Says:

I am of the belief that I would rather a guy who makes plays when presented the opportunity, but struggles to be in the position at all times. You can teach better technique, and study film to improve that.

As opposed to a guy like DVD, who can run with anyone and stay on their hip, YET NEVER MAKES ANY PLAYS. This goes back to him at college as well.

Can’t teach ball-instincts, not especially in your mid 20’s.

  259. Just Fire Baby Says:

I am not sure I ever seen anyone look so lost with the ball in the air as DVD did last season.

If our secondary was a strength I would be surprised. I think Checkwa has upside watched him play at OSU. Fast closer and he can hit, not just a speed guy. I am a little skeptical about DVD coming out of college. He never even started for Miami but had hips and speed according to Woodson. He seemed to be in position to make a play in the games he played but never really made that big play.

I still think these guys are to young still and need work. They were hurt most of their rookie season and not got a lot of quality reps.

Spencer and Brooks are coming off injuries so it always hard to tell what they got. We still need two more DBs going into camp. Not one solid DB on the team in my mind. With all the split sets we will see we need more experience.

The lost DVD part we are on the same page. I said, he looks like he could close but he just could never make the play. He is not ready yet, not sure if he ever will be. Man, I hope I am wrong.

  262. Just Fire Baby Says:

Also look for us to draft a backup LT in the later rounds.

We don’t really have one, unless you count the loser of the Barksdale/Barnes RT battle an option (I don’t really).

Maybe the kid from Boise State, Nate Potter, could be an option. A ZBS type guy, with a lot of starts at LT in college.

  263. guest123 Says:

Bartell isn’t much of a playmaker either, but he does well in shadowing the primary receiver and defends decent enough. Not going to shutdown elite WR’s, but his ball skills are adequate.

If DVD can improve his ballskills to Bartell’s, he’d be decent with that speed. But I’m in agreement that he lacks the instincts to succeed at corner. He’s a liability until he proves himself otherwise.

The funniest DVD moment was against the Texans, when Schaubb threw a floater that was headed right at DVD.

Put into that perspective, I didn’t like it then and I don’t like it now. I’d gladly give up Barskdale/Taiwan for pick #48 this year. That was the worst deal made last year. Barnes/Barks are both stopgaps I don’t think are on the team next season.

  270. Just Fire Baby Says:

I was happy with DVD’s work on special teams, Taiwan as well, as they both showed some potential there, as well as some passion, and DVD even some smarts.

I remember him covering a punch punt, and didn’t want to down the ball, because he might have went out of bounds. Pretty heady, because you see guys make that mistake quite often on pooch punts, and it is ridiculous when you have 4 guys around the ball, and the gunner touches it first for a penalty.

Maybe during pre-season, but he started 4 games and played well, not a liability by any means, too bad his hamstring flared up because I don’t think he would have lost the job.

DVD is a controversial topic, some of us like him better than most but I guess we’ll have to see how he does this year, starting with training camp and preseason before passing judgement, one way or the other.

It’s like a guy who can dribble and take it to the rack with the best of them, but can never finish around the rim.

I am not sure I ever seen anyone look so lost with the ball in the air as DVD did last season.

Hopefully he improves on it, but my money is on us drafting a DB, and DVD getting cut with Chekwa staying.
    ++++++++++++++

I have hope for DVD. In the preseason I remember him giving up some catches, but it seemed like his coverage was very good, he was right with his man, but the ball managed to get through, so he just has to take that next step. He has the hard part down, staying stride for stride with your opponent, now he just has to work on the awareness aspect.

He can’t be worse than Routt and his 75 penalties and 83 TDs allowed last year!

  280. Dakota Says:

Of course, DVD is a stick and will always be a liability on run D on sweeps and pitches in his direction.

  281. guest123 Says:

There is a fallacy that is floating around on these boards, that the defense can get no worse. It can only improve. Wrong. It’s not a given. It takes a lot of work and buy-in. It takes a lot of luck too.

We were desperate for a DB so we just took him.

    *********

So desperate we took him in the 3rd round, but later in the 4th took Chekwa? How come that never made any sense to me? Even while it was happening?

    —————————————
I wanted them to take Checkwa first and we passed on him for DVD, I was thinking oh well. But when we turned around and got Chekwa I was pumped up. There were other teams that were willing to gamble on DVD because there were not a lot of good DBs in last years draft. DVD had the measurables and better hips. Plus, Checkwa was coming off injuries his senior year at OSU (hip injury, broken wrist). Dude has been injury prone. But will see what we have real soon.

    lol,

DVD is a project, but lets see what the new coaching staff brings to the table, reports are he’s bulked up a bit as well. I’m inclined to agree that he’s more bust than boom, but he deserves at least this years TC before we send him away like we did Walter.

    ——–

    U ever see DVD tackle?

    Me EITHER!

Reggie watches film on DVD from last year and cuts him. If Reggies gut tells him who can play football or not DVD is history.

Watched that guy literally run up to a ball carrier and sprawl on the ground in fron to him to avoid contact. Worse tackler than some kickers.

Man, I hated our defense period last year. lack of push up front bone head plays, soft up the middle. We should continue to bring in talent and blow it up! We get credit in the league all the time about our D front and I just don’t see it. Seymour to , Kelly they all look sot to me. Sho Nasty was missed. Houston needs to start making more plays as well.

Chekwa lookewd 10 times better than DVD in his li9mted time on the field and remember, Chekwa was injured on the very first drill on the very first day. He missed almost all of our shortened pre season last year.

Hes going to surprise alot of people

  289. guest123 Says:

I’m not worried about DVD. Reggie will give him a fair chance to work out with the new staff and learn how to time his break, turn his neck, and make a play. If not, he’s a prime candidate to be cut in TC. We need more CB’s, but unless one falls that is right at 95, we need to pick them post draft free agency.

  290. RaiderRockstar Says:

Agree with others. the Defense in 2011 was one huge heaping pile of horse crap …

DVD has already beefed up, which was his major issue.

Best young DB on the squad!
    **********************
Wait, you ARE aware that with the addition of Rod Woodson last year that we doubled our int’s from the previous year. So the guy didn’t turn a bunch of rookies (who were always in the training room instead of on the field) and a 31 year old into Revis… So what he sucks now? Terrible coach? Come on man. Our secondary was a joke because the only guys that played in more than 2 consecutive games (Routt and Sheppard) are a penalty machine (who made some nice plays but not enough to cover for his penalties) and a guy on the wrong side of 30 who was brought in because everyone else was hurt.

    @bcz

I’ll answer this. I don’t think that Tommy Kelly sucks, first of all. I just think he’s more of a penetrator, get after the QB type of guy … a UT if you will. Never saw him as a nose tackle, as Tom Cable once called him. He’s not completely to blame for the poorous run defense, it takes 11 guys.

Here’s why I think he should go. Saves us $3 million. He’s 31 years old and probably past his prime. He’s way overpaid, despite Jerry & Steve saying he’s a borderline Pro Bowl guy and Seymour & Sapp giving him major praise. He does take plays off, but so do a bunch of other guys on defense, thats a lack of discipline on the entire team. You yourself have said that our biggest issue in run defense is consistency (we agree on something!). I think he could be shopped on draft day because it saves us money and we have a young DT in Desmond Bryant primed and ready to take his spot. Lamarr Houston can also play DT, his natural position

    Team needs: Oakland Raiders

APThe Raiders have undergone an almost complete front-office overhaul after the passing of owner Al Davis. Reggie McKenzie was hired away from Green Bay to serve as General Manager, and he tabbed former Broncos defensive coordinator Dennis Allen as head coach. Unfortunately, the Raiders don’t have much of a draft left after Davis and old coach Hue Jackson’s freewheeling, trade-happy ways. Oakland’s first draft pick comes at the end of the third round.

Offensive line: Primarily a power-running team under Jackson, the Raiders are transitioning to zone-blocking methods up front under new offensive playcaller Greg Knapp. Knapp is one of the most run-minded coordinators of the modern era, so improving the front-five play is a must. The Raiders should feel comfortable with left tackle Jared Veldheer, center Stefen Wisniewski, and new right guard Mike Brisiel, but the other two line spots are up for grabs.

Tight end: In Green Bay, McKenzie had Jermichael Finley. Before his Denver stint, Allen saw Jimmy Graham’s potential as an assistant in New Orleans. Knapp had Owen Daniels. A tight end capable of creating mismatches in the passing game essentially runs in the Raiders’ new blood, and the only tight ends on the current roster are blocker Brandon Myers, H-back/fullback type Richard Gordon, 2011 seventh-round pick David Ausberry, and basketball project Andre Hardy.

Quarterback: Inherited from the old regime and approaching age 33, Carson Palmer doesn’t appear to be a strong fit for Knapp’s offensive system, which features mobile quarterbacks capable of making throws on the run. Palmer’s mobility has been shot since he tore multiple knee ligaments in January of 2006. And he’s not getting any younger.

Linebacker: The Raiders might be able to get by with Rolando McClain, Aaron Curry, and Philip Wheeler as starting linebackers, but they have precious little depth. Travis Goethel and converted defensive end Carl Ihenacho are the only other linebackers under contract in Oakland.

For the last time, if Knapp tries to have Palmer running bootlegs frequently, he should be taken outside and shot.

Not going to happen PFT. Maybe a few here and there, but it is not going to be a primary part of the offense.

Any team that is willing to dump the first legit starter they have had in almost a decade in order to find a QB that fits Greg Knapp’s offense would be a team run by morons.

Mark Davis is taking the team to LA.

    Get over it.

    =======================================

Wouldn’t surprise me, particularly if Oakland doesn’t get its act together.
    +++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

    Me either.

There’s a lot of sports money floating around in S.C. and Mark has been seen in S.C. talking to some of it. And it was a deep conversation.

According to Forbes the Raiders were worth something like $762 million in Oakland in 2011 while the jackarse Dodgers were just in a forced sale for $1 billion.
That tells you something about the value of sports teams in S.C.

The Raiders are no closer to getting a new stadium in Oakland now than they were when they returned from L.A.
The mayor of Oakland is playing the same kind of games with the Raiders that the mayor of Sacramento is playing with the Kings.

The bottom line here is that there is no money in Oakland.
It’s too bad because the location of the Oakland Coliseum is perfect.

The two possibilities for the Raiders remaining are sharing with the whiners or continuing to stay in Oakland.
The Raiders could just hang on, hope for the best, keep their fingers crossed, but that makes it really hard to take a pizz.
Moving to S.C. must seem awful tempting to Mar Davis.

Somehow I’d like to see the Raiders come up with the cash to buy the Oakland site itself and build their own stadium, which I think is still owned not just by Oakland but by the county of Alameda.

If they could do that the Raiders would be the powerhouse in football.
And if I could win the lottery, I’d be be living in Hawaii.

Ivey is going to get an opportunity there. I don’t expect Seymour to be wearing a Raider uniform next season unless he has an absolute terror of a season. Bryant will be a free agent. what if Ivey is another Terdell Sands?? If the Raiders, going into the final two weeks of the season, were:

Chris Berman and the crew will be all talked out at the end of hour 3, the post production crew will hurry up the broadcast to get everyone to finally shutup with the usual nonsense, and then they flash the Raiders #95 pick. Won’t bother to show any highlights or talk about him at all. No analysis. Just end credits and on to NBA pregame show or some other garbage ESPN show. 573. RaiderRockstar Says:

Offensive line: Primarily a power-running team under Jackson, the Raiders are transitioning to zone-blocking methods up front under new offensive playcaller Greg Knapp. Knapp is one of the most run-minded coordinators of the modern era, so improving the front-five play is a must. The Raiders should feel comfortable with left tackle Jared Veldheer, center Stefen Wisniewski, and new right guard Mike Brisiel, but the other two line spots are up for grabs.

  583. DMAC Says:

ESPN’s Adam Schefter and NFL Network’s Albert Breer both report the Falcons are closing in on a trade for CB Asante Samuel.
It’s likely for a sixth-round pick. Atlanta’s interest in Samuel wasn’t just a smokescreen to get Brent Grimes to sign his franchise tender. As NFL.com’s Gregg Rosenthal points out, even with Samuel restructuring his contract, the trio of Samuel, Grimes, and Dunta Robinson would be the most expensive in NFL history. Robinson’s $5 million salary is fully guaranteed, which means he or Grimes will likely see plenty of time in the slot. The Eagles, meanwhile, will have close to $20 million in cap space after the trade.

  584. RaiderRockstar Says:

Tight end: In Green Bay, McKenzie had Jermichael Finley. Before his Denver stint, Allen saw Jimmy Graham’s potential as an assistant in New Orleans. Knapp had Owen Daniels. A tight end capable of creating mismatches in the passing game essentially runs in the Raiders’ new blood, and the only tight ends on the current roster are blocker Brandon Myers, H-back/fullback type Richard Gordon, 2011 seventh-round pick David Ausberry, and basketball project Andre Hardy.

Palmer’s mobility has been shot since he tore multiple knee ligaments in January of 2006. And he’s not getting any younger.

    593. Palmer didn’t throw to his TEs much in Hue Jackson’s offense. Most versions of the WCO utilize the TE as a passcatcher. McKenzie just signed the Hardy kid and is reportedly looking at two small school guys that appear to be pass catching types.

With so many needs on defense I’m not sure that we have the luxury of taking one early, but I think we’ll see the TE used a log more in the passing game than we did last year. Keep in mind also that Ausberry was a wideout at SC; doesn’t really fit the blocking TE description.
