WR Criner transcript

Raiders fifth-round draft pick Juron Criner phoned in from Las Vegas to talk about his selection at No. 168. Here is the entire transcript from the conference call with the Bay Area media:

Congratulations.
A: “Thank you.”

Q: Surprised you lasted until the fifth round?
A: “I wouldn’t quite say I had expectations. Like you said, you never know how things are going to turn out. You just got to be patient and just wait until your name is called.”

Q: What are your strengths as a receiver?
A: “I would say, my size, my body control. I have a bit of basketball background history, so that definitely helps me with timing jump balls and as a red-zone threat.”

Q: Did you follow the Raiders?
A: “I never really had a favorite team growing up. I just watched players that I like. So, it will be great to come out there. Similar weather and things like that. Great players came out of there. Biletnikoff. So, it will be great to go up there and play for an organization like Oakland.”

Q: Any talk about converting to tight end?
A: “No, never heard of that one, never wanted to get that big.”

Q: How do you fit in with your 40-time?
A: “I would just say that there’s a difference between playing on the field and having field speed than straight-line speed. So, I don’t feel like I would really having a problem fitting into that category.”

Q: How much do you know about the Raiders offense and how you might fit in here?
A: “Not much. You just got to come in ready to learn and just stay open-minded about it and just pick up whatever you can from whoever you can.”

Q: Are you familiar with any of the players on the Raiders roster?
A: “Yeah, a couple of the receivers – Haywood, Denarius Moore – a couple of the young guys. They got a couple of young receivers.”

Q: Where were you today?
A: “I was just at the house with my family, just watching. Out in Vegas.”

Q: Did the Raiders contact you before they selected you?
A: “No. Not until just before the pick. So, I’m very excited to see the phone ring and get the call.”

Q: Did the Raiders show any interest in you at the scouting combine?
A: “Yeah, I talked with their scouts a few times but nothing out of the ordinary or nothing anything really extra.”

Q: Did you visit the facility in Alameda?
A: “No.”

Q: Are you from Las Vegas?
A: “Yes, born and raised.”

Q: What high school?
A: “Canyon Valley.”

    Preist,

before insulting the rest of us “NEOPHYTES”, make sure you know wtf you’re talking about.

Jerry Porter ran 4.34 in the 40 dash. You obviously had no clue what you’re talkging about. Al Davis drafted this project because he was a physical freak.

  • Raider Riff

    aig killing folks.

but ya gotta admit, porter was good. we wasted his talents.

  • irjonny

how is dennard still on the board. did he kill a prostitute yesterday or something?

Punched a cop in the face.

  • Al_is_theraiders

Better than Bey? Porter and brown slow? You guys are high….

  • Raider Riff

who hasnt wanted to punch a cop in the face?

  • JLofty

Okay, I like his size. Hope he has the WANT TO!

  • JLofty

@6: me. never punched a cop in the face. never been to jail neither….

  • Raider Riff

i would have rather taken TO than criner but its obvious that the board is thin at this stage of the draft for reggie. he’s probably got his eye on quite a few udfa’s.

    —————————

Yeah, I don’t know about that one. Porter could fly. Brown was a speedster early on. I guess by the time he was 35+ he had slowed down. But TB out of ND could definitely run.

I think the fanny-pack might have created an illusion that he wasn’t running quite as fast sometimes.

  • aig-raiders

    Raider Riff,

Sorry to come across so harsh but TJ has a bad habit of posting his opinion and insulting people at the same time. I had to call him on his BS.

Agreed on Porter. Dude wasted his talent.

  • irjonny

oh i forgot about that!! al would’ve taken him by now lol

  • Try Some Reality

We already have burners. I don’t mind the lack of speed here. Big guy, good in red zone.

  • VanHeathen

Like what Reggie is adding to the roster with these picks…you know he’s gong to have his guys burning up the phones at 12:01 eastern time working the UDFA’s…
    Get that coffee brewing Boss…

  • priesttj

Porter was a workour warrior I watched him throughout the combine and I remember in the 4.4′s not 4.3′s however I could be wrong he didn’t have a position he played WR in spots he was a SS at WV. I love kids from that school. Always have I had Bruce Irvin as the best edge rusher in this draft and where was he taken? IMO too high but they got guy who will get 10 sacks in his sleep.

Every single day I have this glorious thought and I dream of the opportunity and hope that one day I can do it.

arrested for allegedly hitting a cop…what many of us want to do, but don’t

  • YoungAmerican

Maybe RB Chris Polk will be the 6th round pick? Amazed he’s still on the board.

  • VanHeathen

Timmy was as fast as he needed to be after the knee injury his second year…still remember him getting the PR TD at home for number 99.
Seemed to be moving fast enough to get to the house…

  • Chris in NY

Someone also said on the last thread that we were complaining about the D-Moore pick last year. Not true. I said after the draft that D-Moore and Taiwan Jones were our best picks of the draft. Personally don’t recall anyone ripping that pick.

Iowa St. CB Leonard Johnson was highly rated till he ran a bad 40

Alfonzo Dennard was expected to go in 2nd or 3rd round until he allegedly hit a cop. Tony Serra could get him off if he comes to Raiders.

    ****

he’d be a good #6. But he was overrated by geeks. Runs upright, injury waiting to happen. Doesn’t block. Bad shoulders. Very productive runner and receiver, though. Weaves through traffic well. Good instincts. Not explosive. Good power for upright runner, but you can already see this guy on IR

  • priesttj

No one said Porter and Brown were slow…

Said Porter wasn’t a track star and he wasn’t. We had LB’s that ran 4.4′s.

  • beach

We have enough speedsters at WR. I don’t care if this kid Criner is not fast, as long as he can catch the football, and use his big body to shield the defender! I am with you, Reggie!

  • Chris in NY

Porter had no heart. Also, while he had great speed, size and vertical leaping ability, he didn’t have that change of direction quickness and scrappy mentaility.

  • Silverandblack666

Tim Brown was not fast? He ran a 4.38 while at Notre Dame, not a track star but dude was fast, was slowed a bit after his injury, but what made him great was his route running, great hands, great ability to get open
