ESPN: Raiders to sign Leinart

Matt Leinart is coming to Oakland, likely as the backup quarterback, according to ESPN’s Adam Schefter.

The move makes sense, given the Raiders’ depth at the position and Leinart having been in the Houston Texans’ system last season with current Oakland offensive coordinator Greg Knapp having been quarterbacks coach there last year.

It also makes sense because it’s way too early to tell if Terrelle Pryor, last year’s acquisition with a third-round supplemental pick, is anywhere close to being an option to back up Carson Palmer.

At the Raiders’ first voluntary minicamp, general manager Reggie McKenzie said it was important for Pryor to get some work to see how far along he is in terms of development.

During an interview with 95.7 The Game Friday, coach Dennis Allen deflected the question about Pryor’s standing as a potential backup, saying it was only important that he get better every day.

Given Pryor’s suspension upon signing last season and his arrival on the final day of training camp in Napa, he is essentially a rookie this season.

It lessens the likelihood that McKenzie will be looking for another quarterback Saturday with the final four selections of the Oakland draft.

With the middle of the 5th round pick I predict a trade down to get another pick in the 6th or maybe next year picks. It will be RM’s first opportunity to trade down.

  • Good night Riff.

  • Marks hair

Im very happy. But these arent 1st rd picks, so its harder for reg to mess up.

  • beach

We need depth on the D line. That must be addressed at 148.

Burris is a perfect flex player for a hybrid system.

  • I excited again!!!! No lefty, it has nothing to do with having him on my list. I just think he is a good fit. A LB who can rush the passer.

  • hellsbells

No this guy can stack and shed. Destroys Rbs who try to pick him up.

  • Thec

A 4th round compensatory pick is basically a 5th round pick.

Disagree…The pick i had in mind was our rd 5 (33)168, not quite the same as a 4th rounder…

  • Raider Riff

Youre right O, you did say “one of the reasons”. I mis-read you. My bad.

Dont forget, Manning has a cannon and the wind messed him up in NE also. The wind makes noodle arms of the best of them.

Miles Burris: 6’2 246 lbs, 4.68 40, 31 reps bench press – projected to go right where Reggie took him, 4th or 5th round

  • aig-raiders

I see a lb that sheds blockers and flies at ball carriers. Hesure aint flat footed waiting for the tackle like burfict.

  • beach

High character is the key to a great football team. Look at the Patriots. Reggie knows how to pick football players, thank goodness!

Is that kaddu lb from Oregon still on board?

  • joker94583
