ESPN: Raiders to sign Leinart

Matt Leinart is coming to Oakland, likely as the backup quarterback, according to ESPN’s Adam Schefter.

The move makes sense, given the Raiders’ depth at the position and Leinart having been in the Houston Texans’ system last season with current Oakland offensive coordinator Greg Knapp having been quarterbacks coach there last year.

It also makes sense because it’s way too early to tell if Terrelle Pryor, last year’s acquisition with a third-round supplemental pick, is anywhere close to being an option to back up Carson Palmer.

At the Raiders’ first voluntary minicamp, general manager Reggie McKenzie said it was important for Pryor to get some work to see how far along he is in terms of development.

During an interview with 95.7 The Game Friday, coach Dennis Allen deflected the question about Pryor’s standing as a potential backup, saying it was only important that he get better every day.

Given Pryor’s suspension upon signing last season and his arrival on the final day of training camp in Napa, he is essentially a rookie this season.

It lessens the likelihood that McKenzie will be looking for another quarterback Saturday with the final four selections of the Oakland draft.

    Riff,

Al was OLD school. He loved his players, and considered them family and not an investment. He was too involved emotionally to make the best decisions at times, but I liked his passion so I can’t complain.

100%!!!! His players were like his kids. He knew everything about them. What owner heckles reporters who have hall of fame votes about xplayers besides AD!

    Draft Kheeston!!!

    O,

Cant pin the lack of SuperBowls on Rivers’ arm strength. Show me where arm strength was a major factor in any other SuperBowls.

Secondly, SB’s are team achievements. Rivers shouldnt be vilified for not having won one no less than Marino. Both guys are accurate, leaders, and tough. I love yelling insults at them but I gotta give them credit where it is due.

Rivers has all the tools to win one. He just needs a real head coach. I mean, c’mon, its Norm Turner. the guy freezes up come playoff time. Norv is the antithesis of clutch. He belongs upstairs, not on the sideline.

    TP will beat out lienart

  • Plunketthead

Brady was unreal in the pocket last years playoffs.
I never seen anyone move half steps and steps to avoid tackles like that staying in the pocket the entire team.

There’s been talk that Al would’ve made a move for Osi Umenyora if he were around for this draft.

I would have welcomed that as a GOOD thing.

    ********************
Both will be on roster but specific wildcat plays will be created for TP to come into games – thats my prediction if we do indeed sign Lienart. Our new OC has worked with mobile QBs that can run before. Vick and Garcia to name two.

    Riff,

You have a valid point about clutch, but I think Leadership AND work ethic (combined) can help in the clutch. Preparation and leadership reduce anxiety, and helps player adapt and make faster decisions, which helps them in the clutch. You are right, some players just have it, and some don’t regardless of their work ethic or leadership.

Looks like pick may come down to players like Jones, Winn, T Lewis, Johnson, T Manning, Chapman, maybe one of the CB’s.

Don’t want a CB in this round in draft though.
