More undrafted free agents signed by Raiders — updated

By Steve Corkran
Saturday, April 28th, 2012 at 5:43 pm in Oakland Raiders.

Since we last spoke, the Raiders have added six more undrafted free agents. They are:
Missouri DL Dominique Hamilton, Southern California wide receiver Brandon Carswell, East Carolina wide receiver Lance Lewis, Utah cornerback Conroy Black, Penn State cornerback Chaz Powell and California (Pa.) wide receiver Thomas Mayo.
Note: As is expected during this uncertain time, there is plenty of misinformation floating around. Nothing is official until the Raiders confirm the signings.
Case in point, Pittsburgh defensive end Brandon Lindsey now is linked to signing with the Pittsburgh Steelers. Still sorting through that one. Stay tuned.

    Mista Brown,

So MLBs are the Captains of the Defense?

Jamista Clown is a moron. Now in the passing era, safeties call the defenses on a lot of teams. Jamista Clown is living in the distant past as he is in all aspects of his life.

  6. Seymour Bush Says:

Looks like Reggie is now trying to add a free agent pass rusher. Good move.

  7. YoungAmerican Says:

Looks like McKenzie wants competition at WR.

Alex Hoffman-Ellis and Sammy Brown would be a nice cap on this UDFA class.

I agree that top CBs are generally overpaid and I’d take an elite pass rusher over an elite CB.

I do worry though that we’ve got 4 corners who could be pretty good, or who all could also struggle. Really, I’m just as high on DVD and Chekway at this point and hoping they emerge as the starters.

I worry about the fact that we still don’t have any edge rushers to speak of. Allen and the D are going to have to dial up the pressure with creative blitzing this year. No doubt about it. Although, from what I hear, that is Allen’s specialty.

maybe Reggie McKenzie saw a little Clay Matthews, Jr in Miles Burris, he was making a lot of plays on the highlight tape. FYI; most of the plays he was unblocked or had a free line to the runner….appears to be a blitz type…very little tape of him defeating blockers, though – still looks good.

I like Aaron Henry. Nice selection. He was snubbed by the Big 10 writers but was a lst team All Conference selection by the coaches. Not invited to the combine. No one knows why. Decent size, can play either corner or safety, ran a 4.5 forty. Funny how a 4.4 guy goes in the lst 4 rounds and a 4.5 guy goes undrafted.

Brien they brought in a bunch of LB’s who can run defend, and they signed a bunch of corners in FA who can run defend. I have been telling you this for years. You blame the DT’s for the run defense, me the coaches and the people in the league blame the LB’s and the secondary for our poor run defense.

  57. Seymour Bush Says:

Pat Lee is a good player just could not crack the lineup with Cwood out there. Lee kept getting hurt. You got Underwood as well. Shawtae Spencer is more of a cover corner than run defender.

  58. xraided Says:

Method, i would have liked more DT’s signed.

with that being said, i think it was more of our shabby LB’er crew more than it was our DL. Seymour has a lot more help this year, especially from his DC(Allen through Tarver) calling better plays …

we will not have the bset D in the league, but it will automatically be better without CHUNKY B calling the worst Raider D in team history.

DVD is very fast, very long and very fluid. Perfect raw ability for a CB. Rod Woodson loved him. Far better prospect than anything we’ll grab off the UFA heap. And Al’s acumen at drafting corners was second to none.

    thanks, DJ Johnny
Looks like much of the draft is special teams/depth to push what starters we already have. My only complaint is passing on Dennard, with injury prone vets Shawntae Spencer and Bartell (neck?!) starting….Dennard wouldve been nice fall back (great in run support and decent in coverage). The thing with DVD is that he’s a finesse paper tiger…much lighter contact-shy version of Dominque Rodgers-Cromartie. Burris could at least help on specials and add occasional heat coming off the edge…did not see much of him in coverage, either.

  86. realtruraider Says:

    Lucas Nix, G

Biography: Three-year starter who’s been used at both tackle and guard for Pittsburgh.

Positives: Nice-sized lineman who shows a degree of athleticism and versatility in his game. Fires off the snap into blocks, stays square and anchors at the point. Quickly gets his hands into defenders and fights hard throughout the action. Moves relatively well on his feet. Keeps his head on a swivel and works well with linemates. Nasty and attacks assignments. Blocks with leverage, for the most part.

Negatives: Lacks a dominant base. Must do a better job sinking his butt and bending his knees at the line of scrimmage. Struggled with a knee injury in the middle part of the 2011 season, which slowed his development.

Analysis: Nix was very productive the past three seasons and is a line prospect who offers size and growth potential. He could develop into a starter in the NFL or at the very least could be an inexpensive utility blocker for several positions on the offensive line.

    Projection: 4th

You guys act like Mitchell has been a disaster because

    1) The talking heads panned the pick.
    2) He gave up a TD to Gates in the finale. Not the first guy Gates has scored a TD on in his career.

The kid plays with a lot of enthusiasm and has had some nice games. He can play.

Which is it? should they sit instead???

You mean the NFL.com that said JR was the next coming of John Elway? That NFL.com. Bergstrom was considered the best zbs lineman in the draft. Not sure if NFL.com graded him as a tackle or what. The definition of a sleeper pick is someone the mainstream pundits overlook. Many think Berris as well as the guy from Angola are sleeper picks. Therefore their scores are irrelvant.
