Raiders go with defensive player for final pick

By Steve Corkran
Saturday, April 28th, 2012 at 3:26 pm in Oakland Raiders.

The Raiders tabbed a Penn State player in the 2012 NFL draft for the second time. This time, it’s linebacker Nathan Stupar, a 6-feet-2, 240-pounder.
Stupar wasn’t a full-time starter at Penn State. He is the kind of player who gets by more on his smarts and determination than he does with his ability, which still is somewhat impressive.
He is projected to be a dependable special teams player and solid backup, with an outside shot at developing into a starting-caliber player.
That’s fine with the Raiders. They have a need for an infusion of youth and smarts on their special teams and an opening for a backup linebacker.
Stupar played outside linebacker in college. However, he said the Raiders informed him that he will be moved inside, which means he will back up projected starter Rolando McClain from the outset.

Our back-up center could be Alex Parsons

    ****

Parsons is a good fit for ZBS. He was on practice squad last 2 years. I think he will be a strong competitor for roster spot. Also Brisiel can play center, but that would be an emergency last resort since he’s our starting RG

And I have yet to hear a black player referred to as “High motor” or “high effort” LOL…I hate how analysts use those terms almost automatically to describe white players.
    ??????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????
I’d say you don’t listen well enough.

#50, I don’t have to legitimize myself to you, but I will give you a much needed history lesson.

And this is just off the top of my head. There are many other instances that I can’t temember, but these are highlights.

When Greg Skerpenak came out of Michigan & Al took him in the second round THEN miscast him as a RT (instead of OG, where he found himself. With the CArolina Panthers) I was hoping the Raiders would take a just as seasoned Ol from UDub that played OT the same time Lincoln Kennedy was playing there; Suipele Malamala, who distinguished himself as a fine RT for the New York Jets. Far superior player.

When the Raiders took Stanford Rout from Houston I was lobbying for Michael Roos from Eastern Washington. Need I say anything more, especially since Rout could have been taken one round later?

When the Raiders drafted Michael Huff from Texas I lobbied for Haloti Ngata, the best interior Dlineman in the NFL. Wonder how the Raiders rush defense would be now?

When the Raiders took JFatboy i was hoping the Raiders would take Megatron or Joe Thomas, LOT from Wisconsin. Hopefully you rremember how that turned out.

When the Raiders took DMAC I was hoping they would go for Ryan Clady from Boise State, then was hoping they would take Matt Forte from Tulane. Ironically then the Raiders would have him paired with Michael Bush from day one.

So, #50, STFU. You know nothing from my knowledge base. You’re just hating with no tangible comeback. I’m entitled to my opinion just the same as anyone else blogging on this site, plus I’ve been a Raider (oten disgrunteled) fan since 1967. I know talent as well as ANTONE on this blog, fool. Take a hike.

Oh, btw; same applies to my talent assessment skills in baeball & hoops. Fool. . .

heard a lot of good things about Miller. Hard to count on one “1st year player” ie a guy who’s been on practice squad somewhere but not active for more than a couple games. But they’ll bring in more guys with similar credentials and the best man wins the roster spot

  • edward teach

I think you might be right about Parsons, Lefty. If I remember right, he twiterred something a few weeks back about playing center.

  • M Lonetree

CEO Amy Trask announces Raider generosity vis-a-vis fan purchases which is truly an unprecidented gesture and in here the wonderment is about a UDFA from Podunk U.

  • xraided

    100. more blue collar players that like playing football. they don’t have to be a 1st rounder to do it. people slept on Veldheer all day long. i think he’ll be a top 3 LT in the league next year.

Bergstrom is a very dedicated football player. you know he will be clean due to his religion(most are anyway) … if he can pull well, i easily see Carlisle being replaced right out of training camp by this kid. did hear he needs to clean up his pass protecting, but it shouldn’t be a huge problem when you’re in between Wiz and Veldheer on his island… right?

Probably get ufa and a second tier vet FA.

  • xraided

Ed, that would be amazing if Parsons becomes a solid Center, while Bergstrom works out at RT in 2012. Pollack should be loving life right now.

  • Kirk

Raiders picked Bergstrom because their number one priority is to make sure Wiz stays at center for the whole year.

at least scouting isn’t as racist as it used to be 30 years ago. Back then, I could tell the color of the player’s skin by reading the words used to describe his play. Actually, I read a couple scouting books this year and a lot of Black, Brown, Polynesian, etc non whites were described as “high motor” or “high effort”

Six more picks until both Fangupo and NJB are undrafted free agents. I wonder if Reggie takes a flyer on either of them (or Burfict, for that matter)…

    BoSJack,

    The Raiders 2012 draft class…

Thanks Kirk – Lets do a little analysis on this draft (note added Jason Campbell for a 4th in):

Carson Palmer QB – Played inconsistently coming off the street last year will have playbook, preseason and repore with WRs – expect CP to be a top 7 QB not bad for a mid round first. He also kept us in play for a playoff spot last year.

Joe Barksdale OL We gave up our 2nd this year. If he can beat out Barnes and play average RT the 2nd will be vindicated.

Taiwan Jones RB Other part of the 2nd round pick. He had injury issues last year. Really fast guy that can help on ST as well as BU. If he stays healthy and continues to improve him and Barksdale would prove to be a valuable 2nd round pick.

Terelle Pryor QB This is a raw developmental pick. Boom bust. Most had him going here mid 3rd round in this draft if he did not go supplemental.

Aaron Curry LB 4th overall pick given up for a 7th rounder – that’s an A+ for potential right now but will have to wait and see if he can fit with new defense.

Jason Campbell – JC was valuable for us over the last 2 years. I liked the move for this years 4th when it was done – injuries always complicate things and can happen to anyone.

Tony Bergstrom OL Best ZBS lineman in draft available at the end of the third – so far so good.

Miles Burris LB Sleeper good pick but will have to see how it plays out. He could steal or assume a starting position as the season wears on due to injury or perhaps felony or just poor performance of other LBrs.

Jack Crawford DE OK I am scratching my head but if he develops he could be the Steal of draft or just another reach by Raiders – thinking the latter but hoping the former. The foot injury slowing him down story if true could make him a sleeper just like the constant coaching changes devalued D. Moore last year.

Juron Criner WR Very effective in College not sure how it will translate but this late in draft – its worth a look. He was value at this point in Draft. His large target makes him unique and different than other recievers and can create mismatches.

Christo Bilukidi DT I am getting the Veldeer feeling with this one. A true sleeper that the Scouts are giddy about. This is a guy who might come out of no where around week 8.

Nate Stupar LB UDFA that Raiders did not want to try to recruit? He will be lucky to make team or practice squad.

RB Edwin “Rock” Baker is now off the board. So is UT Chattanooga QB BJ Coleman

    Agreed.

I don’t see Stormy as a RT any time soon. Barksdale has a chance there thus year.

  • JONTRAIN

We can all cherry pick the times we been right too.

Congrats on knowing that Routt and Jamarcus were bad picks LOL.

If u seriously want the title of draftnik expert of a Raiders blog comments section…go ahead and take it my friend LOL

My point is grading a draft after it happened..AS IF ur even remotely qualified.. is idiotic.. as is your angry retort.

I mean really dawg ur puffing chest on a blog defending ur “talent assessment skills” in 3 sports. LOL

  • YoungAmerican

I know the Bilukidi pick looks silly to some, but the Raiders felt like he was the kind of player they needed and didn’t want to risk anyone else scooping him up. If they feel that strongly about the kid, it’s hard to complain about the pick. Looking forward to seeing what he can do.

Now we can all get a life…after we sign as UDFAs:

RegMac showed in his first draft that he is his own voice, and is not going to worry about bloggers, wannabee GMs, and 17-year “insider” opinions. That’s a relief, but did it have to be this obscure? Got to remember who the scout team was on this one when the final results are in, a few years from now..

  • edward teach

    137. Glad you responded to that. I was going to but I couldn’t stop laughing.

  • JONTRAIN

    As far as Bilukidi…

Does anyone here know what other teams were interested in him and may have drafted him? NO!!!!

Therefore…stop with the “we coulda picked him up as an UDFA” nonsense

No guarantee he woulda wanted to come here anyway

Bottom line.. Reg said he’s looking for depth in the draft this year. I like his strategy. Eff upside. Now whether these picks pan out…. we shall see. But I like his strategy

  • YoungAmerican

    Sammy Brown
    Nicolas Jean-Baptiste
    Leonard Johnson
    James Brown
    Ryan Steed
    Adrien cole
    Alex Hoffman-Ellis
    Brett Roy

Those would be my picks. But I’m sure the Raiders won’t be the only team after those players.

Brett Roy could be a very, very good one.

  • Twocents

Not sure I’m keen on the Raiders giving money to schools run by the state, they have a dismal record.
I would prefer that they give the dollars to people that will try something new.
